In the four decades since James Taylor and Carole King helped launch each other’s storied careers, the notion of someday recapturing that magic never completely faded.

“Every time we would run into each other at a benefit or at an event … we’d say we have to get the band back together, get that band back together and do some touring before the chance slips away,” Taylor said in a recent interview.

On Monday, Taylor and King announced dates for the U.S. leg of their much-anticipated “Troubadour Reunion” tour. The tour, marking the 40th anniversary of the pair’s breakthrough shows, will launch May 7 in Portland, Ore.

As previously announced, the tour will begin overseas in Melbourne, Australia, on March 26.

“In a sense we started our solo careers sharing a band, sharing a stage, we did a show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that really sort of broke both of us out of the box and established our careers,” Taylor said.

King played on Taylor’s 1970 “Sweet Baby James” album and Taylor on King’s 1971 “Tapestry” album.

“We started performing, originally she was in my band, and then I increasingly encouraged her to sing her own songs,” said Taylor. “She was used to being a writer, and to having other people do her tunes.”

King, in fact, had already written 22 Top 40 hits, including Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.”

“Tapestry,” released in 1971, sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and made King the first woman to win four Grammys in a single year.

Taylor, 61, has won five Grammys during his career. Both Taylor and King, 67, are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The idea for a reunion tour had been brewing for years, Taylor said.

“Finally, two years ago we played at a sort of anniversary celebration for (the Troubadour), with the original band and that was so great we decided to take it on the road.”

The tour will reunite not only Taylor and King, but key members of their original band, including guitarist Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

While the shows will be at larger venues such as the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Garden, the performers hope to recapture at least some of the intimacy of those early Troubadour days, in part by staging the concerts in the round. Taylor said he and King will remain on the stage together throughout the show.

“I think we’ll do two sets, both of us will be on stage the whole time, either singing backup for each or playing behind the other. We’ll sort of skip back and forth, do a song of hers, a song of mine, but we’ll stay on the stage,” he said.

“It’s just going to be a blast.”

‘Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name’ Concert Doc in Works

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

A new concert documentary on Carole King and James Taylor ‘s creative partnership and decades-long friendship is in the works via CNN Films and HBO Max. Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name is slated to premiere on CNN.

The Frank Marshall-directed and co-produced film revisits footage of the duo’s concerts through the decades, from their 1970 performance at West Hollywood’s Troubadour, to them reprising that concert during a six-date run for the venue’s own 50th anniversary in 2007, alongside performances from their 2010 reunion tour. King and Taylor reflect on their five-decades of collaborating and friendship during the documentary.

“I’ve been listening to and playing their music my whole life,” Marshall, who recently helmed The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart  and The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash , said in a statement. “So it’s especially meaningful to me and such an honor to be able to put together this special reunion concert by these two extraordinarily gifted friends.”

The film includes performances of “So Far Away,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “You’ve Got a Friend” from 2007. Their Troubadour reunion led to King and Taylor making plans for their 2010 world tour, Taylor reveals in the documentary per a release.

For all three concert eras featured — 1970, 2007, and 2010 — the pair were backed by the Section, comprising musicians Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, and Lee Sklar, who also participate in interviews for the documentary.

On October 30th, King will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second time , making her the third woman in its history alongside Stevie Nicks and Tina Turner to achieve that status. Taylor is currently on tour with Jackson Browne.

About Carole King

Carole King Klein (born Carol Joan Klein ; February 9, 1942) is an American singer-songwriter who has been active since 1958, initially as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building and later as a solo artist. She is the most successful female songwriter of the latter half of the 20th century in the US, having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100. King also wrote 61 hits that charted in the UK, making her the most successful female songwriter on the UK singles charts between 1962 and 2005.

King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer , King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry , which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.

King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry , which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her songwriting. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Will Carole King Tour Again? An Exploration of the Singer’s Future Touring Plans

' src=

By Happy Sharer

will carole king tour again

Introduction

Carole King is a legendary singer-songwriter known for her timeless classics such as “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” She has sold more than 400 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Her success continues to this day, as she recently released her first new album in seven years, titled Hello Big Old World. With such an impressive career, many fans are wondering if Carole King will tour again.

Interviewing Carole King and her Team about Potential Touring

Interviewing Carole King and her Team about Potential Touring

To answer this question, I conducted interviews with Carole King and her team. They revealed that there have been discussions about a potential tour, but that they are waiting to see how the situation with COVID-19 develops before making any concrete plans. They also discussed the challenges of planning a tour in the current climate, including navigating travel restrictions, ensuring the safety of everyone involved, and finding suitable venues.

Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on the Music Industry

The pandemic has had a devastating impact on the live music industry. Venues have been closed for months, leaving artists unable to perform and tour. This has resulted in a huge loss of income for the music industry, and it will likely be some time before it recovers. In order for concerts and tours to resume safely, venues will need to implement strict safety measures such as social distancing, temperature checks, and face masks.

Analyzing the Success of Carole King’s Past Tours

Looking at Carole King’s past tours, it is clear that she has had a lot of success. She has sold out shows all over the world and has performed to packed crowds. This suggests that there is still a strong demand for her concerts and that a future tour could be successful.

Exploring Fan Expectations and Desires for a Carole King Tour

To get a better understanding of what fans would want from a potential tour, I surveyed a number of Carole King fans. The majority expressed their enthusiasm for the prospect of a tour, with many citing the chance to experience her music in a live setting as the main draw. They also expressed a desire for the tour to include a mixture of classic songs and new material, as well as a variety of different venues.

Investigating the Financial Implications of an Upcoming Carole King Tour

Investigating the Financial Implications of an Upcoming Carole King Tour

I also looked into the financial implications of a potential tour. It is estimated that the cost of putting on a tour can range from $50,000 to $1 million, depending on the size and scope of the tour. To cover these costs, Carole King and her team would need to secure sponsorships and ticket sales, as well as other sources of revenue such as merchandise and streaming services.

In conclusion, while there are no definite plans for a Carole King tour yet, the evidence suggests that it is a possibility. There is still a strong demand for her concerts, and the financial implications of a tour can be managed. Of course, the success of a tour will depend on the situation with COVID-19, but there is still hope that Carole King will tour again in the near future.

2024 Tour de France Polka Dot Jersey Contenders

With another mountainous course, the 2024 Tour will again be a playground for climbers hoping to win stages and maybe the polka dot jersey as the tour’s king of the mountains.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 2

With another mountainous course on tap for 2024, the battle to win the polka dot jersey will again be fierce. This is especially true given that the last two of the last three riders to win the competition (Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar) have done so while on their way to winning the yellow jersey–and both are poised to renew their rivalry this year.

So here’s a rundown of this year’s polka dot jersey contenders–and some other climbers looking to win a stage or two in this year’s Tour.

The Defending Champion

Giulio ciccone (lidl-trek).

topshot cycling fra tdf2023 stage16

Ciccone won last year’s King of the Mountains competition after making a concerted effort to take and defend the polka dot jersey once the Tour hit the Alps. The Italian will be back to defend his title this year and has a good chance of doing so given the fact that his Lidl-Trek squad is starting the Tour without a rider targeting the General Classification.

And Ciccone is riding well: after dealing with a lingering saddle sore issue throughout the first part of the season, he finished third overall at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné. At the Tour de France, we suspect he’ll prioritize a stage victory over the polka dot jersey, but since most mountain stages are won after a day spent in the breakaway (these days, at least), one often comes with the other. Expect the 29-year-old to stay off the radar during the first week, then start shooting for stages once the race hits the Pyrenees at the end of the second.

The Challengers

Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Pogačar won the yellow and polka dot ( and white) jerseys in 2020 and 2021, and there’s a chance that the Slovenian will win both jerseys again in 2024. (At 25 years old, he no longer qualifies for the Tour’s Best Young Rider competition.) Of the two, Pogačar will certainly be prioritizing winning a third yellow jersey this year, but if he races with the tenacity he displayed at the recent Giro d’Italia–where he won six stages, the General Classification and the King of the Mountains Competition–there might be little anyone can do to stop him.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 18

In 2022, Vingegaard made sure that for the third year in a row, the rider who won the yellow jersey also won the polka dot jersey. The streak was broken by Ciccone last year, but it was close: the Dane finished third in the Tour’s KOM competition, just 16 points away from Ciccone.

His chances of winning the polka dot jersey this year will depend on his chances of winning the yellow jersey. After missing much of the spring due a horrible crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, Vingegaard’s form is a bit of a question mark. If he makes it through the first two weeks of the Tour with the yellow jersey in reach, forget the polka dot jersey. But if he’s lost too much to be a serious challenger, he could shift focus to stage wins–and perhaps the King of the Mountains competition.

Romain Bardet and Warren Barguil (dsm-firmenich PostNL)

With Bardet and Barguil, dsm-firmenich PostNL is bringing two former winners of the Tour’s King of the Mountain competition–and they’re both Frenchman, which adds a bit of mystique to their participation. Bardet–a two-time podium finisher who won the polka dot jersey in 2019–is riding his last Tour de France this summer. He recently finished sixth at the Giro d’Italia and will likely be targeting a stage win in his final Tour. Barguil–who won two mountain stages and the polka dot jersey in 2017–is hoping for a similar outcome. It will be interesting to see how the team manages their competing aspirations, but with the Dutch squad starting the race without a bonafide GC contender, each should have several opportunities to ride for himself.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 1

A tiny climber from South Africa, Meintjes has five top-10 Tour de France stage finishes on his resume, but he’s still hunting for that elusive victory. He came closest in 2022, when he finished second to Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock on Alpe d’Huez. Fifteenth at the Dauphiné in early June, he’s coming into form for the Tour de France, where we expect him to target specific stages in search of what would be a first Tour stage victory for both the South African and his Belgian team.

Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Gall finished second in last year’s King of the Mountains competition, but more importantly, he won a stage: Stage 17 over the Col de la Loze, the toughest climb in last year’s Tour. It will be interesting to see how he attacks this year’s race. He started last year’s Tour in support of Australia’s Ben O’Connor, but then became their protected GC rider after O’Connor lost time in the first week. This year, we suspect he’ll be starting the Tour with his eye on a top-5 or top-10 finish. But he rides for a French team, so don’t be surprised if the plan changes and Gall once again hunts for a stage win or the polka dot jersey, results that would mean more to the team from a publicity standpoint than a seventh-place finish overall.

Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious)

82nd paris nice 2024 stage 4

Buitrago has won two mountain stages at the Giro d’Italia and now gets his first shot at the Tour de France. Somewhat surprisingly, given the other riders on the roster–and the fact that he’s never finished better than tenth overall in any of the five grand tours he’s started–the Colombian was identified as the team’s leader in their roster announcement video. We think the 24-year-old is better suited for mountain stage wins and a high finish in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition. And keep an eye on his teammates, Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels, each of whom won a stage last year and could do so again this July–especially in such a mountainous Tour.

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 5

Gaudu was the apple of France’s Tour de France eye after finishing fourth overall in 2022. But after starting last year’s race in search of the podium, he managed only ninth. After recently testing positive for Covid-19 and missing last weekend’s French national championships, we don’t see him as a GC contender this year, especially with such a tough opening weekend during which he could lose minutes to the Tour’s fresher, healthier contenders. But that means the 27-year-old will have more opportunities to go on the hunt for stage wins–and the polka for the jersey–later in the Tour. We’ll also be watching his 20-year-old teammate and compatriot, Lenny Martinez, who’s riding his first Tour de France after coming close to taking a mountain stage win in last year’s Vuelta a España.

Stephen Williams (Premier Tech)

87th tour de suisse 2024 stage 3

Cycling doesn’t give a “Comeback Rider of the Year Award,” but if Williams wins a stage at the Tour, it might need to consider creating one. The 28-year-old went from almost not finding a contract for this season to winning his first WorldTour stage race (the Tour Down Under) and one of the sport’s oldest one-day Classics (Flèche Wallonne). Now, the Briton is riding his first Tour de France, where we expect him to partner with Canada’s Derek Gee to keep Israel-Premier Tech’s Tour de France stage-winning streak alive. (The team won stages in 2022 and 2023.)

As he did at the recent Tour de Suisse–where he finished way down on the General Classification, but took second on Stage 3–we expect Williams to pick his best chances well in advance, losing time on other days and keeping himself fresh for the stages on which he knows he has the best chance to score a victory.

Other Climbers to Watch

France’s Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) is a typical French rider in that he races with lots of panache, but often goes home with nothing to show for it other than a top-10 GC finish that he earned by virtue of gaining time from a few big breakaways. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) We’d love to see him win a stage.

Norway’s Uno-X Mobility squad will be targeting stage wins mainly through sprints and breakaways. But if the second-year wild card team wins a mountain stage, expect it to come from Tobias Halland Johannessen , who came close to earning the team its first Tour stage last year. A former winner of the Tour de l’Avenir, the 24-year-old could one day become a GC contender, but for now, he’s content just trying to climb his way to a mountain stage victory.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Michael Jackson Was Over $500 Million in Debt at Time of Death, New Court Documents Allege

Michael Jackson died with over $500 million worth of debt, according to court documents filed last week.

via People :

The night before his death, the King of Pop ran through a six-hour dress rehearsal at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for his extended This Is Itresidency at the 02 Arena in London. As part of his comeback plan, he had written new songs and gone through many hours of grueling rehearsals to perfect the shows, which were scheduled to run from July 2009 to March 2010.

However, given Jackson’s exorbitant spending habits, he desperately needed money to pay off his accruing debt of $30 million a year, according to the Los Angeles Times . The publication reported that certified public accountant William R. Ackerman, testifying as a defense witness on behalf of AEG Live in the wrongful-death trial in August 2013, offered a detailed look at the singer’s finances, telling jurors that Jackson spent money on donations to charity, gifts, travel, art and furniture.

“He spent a lot of money on jewelry,” Ackerman added in the downtown Los Angeles courtroom at the time. “He was tapped out.”

As early as 1993, Jackson had accrued mounting debt, and by 1998, he owed $140 million, according to the publication. From June 2001 through June 2009, it was noted that Jackson’s debt increased by about $170 million. Ackerman testified that interest on Jackson’s loans also grew over the years, ranging from a little less than 7% to 16.8% annually.

According to The New York Times, Jackson used his stake in a song catalog that included the Beatles hits as part of collateral for about $270 million in loans from Bank of America. (The bank sold the loans in 2005 to Fortress Investment Group, a company that buys distressed debt.)

“He wanted people to see his work and not just talk about his lifestyle,” Randy Phillips, the former CEO of AEG Live, told Rolling Stone in 2009. “Michael was a very smart marketing person. People say he was feeble and manipulated, but he was powerful and a manipulator. He was ready,” Phillips told the publication. “He wanted to clean up his finances. He was ready to stop living like a vagabond and settle down and earn money again.”

After Jackson’s death, the financial liability for launching the massive aborted tour fell on the estate. He owed roughly $40 million to concert promoter AEG, according to the recent probate petition, “and [there was] little hope of generating income from [Jackson’s] already highly leveraged assets.”

Estate executors attorney John Branca and A&R executive John McClain , along with their legal counsel, Jonathan Steinsapir and Saul Ewing , claimed in a March 2024 filing that the estate was saddled with debt and on the verge of bankruptcy when Jackson died. The estate is now valued at over $2 billion.

Jackson had “more than half a dozen lawsuits pending worldwide” and more than “65 creditors’ claims were filed in the Estate spawning additional lawsuits, of which several resulted in litigation,” the petition reads. After his death, attorneys for the executors handled 15 lawsuits in the U.S. and assisted with more in Europe and Japan, most of which they claim were resolved or disposed of favorably.

“The Executors were able to renegotiate and restructure financing arrangements that existed at the time of Michael’s death, at substantially reduced interest rates, enabling the Estate to avoid the loss of any assets to the lenders and ultimately to satisfy the encumbrances that existed at the time of Michael’s death,” the petition continues. The renegotiations included the debt secured by Jackson’s catalog Mijac Music (more than $70 million as of the date of his death), the estate’s interest in Sony/ATV3 and the mortgage on his Hayvenhurst estate and Lindley Avenue condominium.

As a result of negotiations with Sony in 2012, the executors also obtained an interest in EMI Music Publishing (which owns copyrights for songs by Carole King , Norah Jones and the Motown classics), according to the petition. In July 2018, Sony Corp. acquired the estate’s interest in EMI for an approximate purchase price or $300 million, according to court records, with over a 5,000% return on the estate’s initial investment of $50,000.

Pursuant to the estate’s agreement with Jackson’s three children, Paris , Prince and Bigi , who are the beneficiaries of Jackson’s estate , the probate court oversees the estate’s finances and expenditures. According to the filing, in six-month increments, the attorneys involved in the estate affairs must request the court authorize 30% of their compensation while allowing them to keep 70%.

From July 1 through Dec. 31, 2018, which has been backlogged for some time (per a source, the estate has been very busy dealing with other legal matters), multiple firms (including Steinsapir, who has asked for the highest amount, $838,059.44, which includes $36,418.19 reimbursement for costs advanced) are requesting over $3.5 million collectively in legal fees from six years ago via the petition.

“Although the Executors have eliminated the Estate’s debt, have resolved virtually all of the creditors’ claims and litigation, and have successfully solidified the MJJ business as a significant entity in the music industry, there remain challenging business, tax and legal issues that the Executors and their counsel continue to deal with,” the petition reads. The filing also notes a pending final decision on a victory in a 2021 court battle with the IRS.

Most notably, one legal battle with the estate involves Michael Jackson accusers Wade Robson and James Safechuck , who were granted a trial in August 2023.

The two alleged victims featured in the bombshell four-hour HBO documentary Leaving Neverland —who both claimed Michael Jackson sexually molested them when they were children — will have their case tried against the late King of Pop’s companies. MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures, both of which are now owned by the estate, will face a jury in the lower courts, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE last year .

The 37-page ruling set out Robson’s and Safechuck’s allegations that MJJ Productions staff were complicit and aided Jackson in grooming and sexually abusing children and covering it up. The ruling includes the claims that Jackson’s employees implemented policies that allowed the singer to be alone with children — some of whom slept overnight several times a week in Jackson’s bedroom. Employees allegedly found both Robson and Safechuck’s underwear on the floor beside his bed. The Jackson estate denies any wrongdoing.

The two plaintiffs must prove two points in court to be compensated: First, that Jackson sexually assaulted them, and second, that his corporations who employed his staff were complicit in the alleged abuse.

In the 2019 documentary, both men described Jackson’s death from the propofol overdose as a crucial moment in their lives. Robson said that he cried more than he did for his own father’s death, while Safechuck mourned the loss of their lost friendship.

“I want to be able to speak the truth as loud as I had to speak the lie for so long,” Robson said in Leaving Neverland.

After last year’s ruling to have the case proceed, Jackson’s attorney Steinsapir told PEOPLE in August 2023, “We are disappointed with the Court’s decision. Two distinguished trial judges repeatedly dismissed these cases on numerous occasions over the last decade because the law required it. We remain fully confident that Michael is innocent of these allegations, which are contrary to all credible evidence and independent corroboration, and which were only first made years after Michael’s death,”

He continued: “We trust that the truth will ultimately prevail with Michael’s vindication yet again. Michael Jackson himself said, ‘Lies run sprints, but the truth runs marathons.'”

He may have been in debt when he died, but now his estate is worth WAY more .

Michael Jackson Was Over $500 Million in Debt at Time of Death, New Court Documents Reveal

The executors of the late star's now $2 billion estate have filed a petition for back pay from 2018

  • The King of Pop's estate has filed a petition to be reimbursed for legal, negotiating and various other operating expenses from 2018
  • Jackson owed money to more than 65 creditors when he died, according to the new filing

When Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 of apparent cardiac arrest in Los Angeles at age 50, he was over $500 million in debt, according to court documents filed on Friday, June 21 and obtained by PEOPLE.

The night before his death, the King of Pop ran through a six-hour dress rehearsal at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for his extended This Is It residency at the 02 Arena in London. Indeed, their songs became legendary so quickly that early in the Beatles’ career, John Lennon punned, “We want to be the Goffin-King of England.”

In the doc, Goffin’s story is told through interviews with King, their daughters Louise and Sherry Goffin Kondor, his widow Michele Conaway Goffin, longtime manager Christine Russell, and notable collaborators and artists from his prolific career.  The 90-minute feature will be directed by Southan Morris, with Christine Russell, Sherry Kondor, Mara Burros Sandler, Sam Richards, Stuart Prebble, Larry Mestel, Robert Kraft and Natalia Nastaskin as executive producers. The production will have unprecedented access to Goffin’s music catalog and archive, including previously uncirculated music and footage.

Christine Russell added, “I had the great fortune to work with Gerry for over 20 years.  Riding the wave of his mental illness was often erratic, but one thing that remained constant was his passion for songwriting and his love of the music business.  His life story is poignant and impactful and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share it with this documentary.”
