2024 Daytime Guided Tours

• The Original Knickerbocker: Washington Irving & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Meet the father of the American short story on this one-hour tour!  Learn all about Washington Irving, his impact on American Literature and the enduring appeal of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", which recently celebrated its Bicentennial. Best of all, you'll find out why Irving is called the Original Knickerbocker! 2024 Dates: Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. through September. October and November dates will be posted in early September.

• Classic Daytime Tour.  Soak up the beauty of this 173-year old cemetery while your guide regales you with stories of the fascinating people resting here in peace. This  two-hour daytime walk pays homage to Washington Irving before heading north to visit the final resting places of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee, steel titan Andrew Carnegie, oilman William Rockefeller, and much more. Admire beautiful art, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism along the way. This tour gives a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous. 2024 Dates: Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. through September. October and November dates will be posted in early September.

• Classic Evening Lantern Tour. Step back in time and explore the cemetery by kerosene lantern light! This two-hour evening tour gives you a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous. You’ll visit titans of industry like Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller, meet Washington Irving whose famous short story gave our village its very name, see the resting place of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee, and much more. Along the way, admire beautiful art, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism. 2024 Dates: Spring and summer dates and times will be posted soon. The true stories on this two-hour lantern tour are so grim, you just might have nightmares!

Curious to learn about a family that lost 5 children one terrible afternoon, or a horrific murder that led police on a multi-state chase? Maybe you’d like to hear about a son who shot his father before turning the gun on himself, and a daughter who poisoned her mother? If so, then this is the tour for you!

Murder and Mayhem is back and better than ever with a new route - visit a few old favorites and leave with new ones! The truth is always stranger than fiction.

Subject matter is not suitable for children under 18. For the enjoyment of all tour goers, please respect this policy.

The Good, the Bad and the Unusual!

Join Sara Mascia and Tara Van Tassell from our local historical society as they dish about several intriguing locals as well as some of our world- famous inhabitants. You can guess who will be good, bad, or unusual! Among the many locals are poet and eccentric Minna Irving, chocolatier William Wallace, and popular neighbor “Uncle” Washington Irving. They will also bring guests to visit some of the individuals who became locals by making Sleepy Hollow their final resting place, such as wealthy industrialist Andrew Carnegie, labor leader Samuel Gompers, a crop of Alexander Hamiltons, and many others all by the light of kerosene lanterns.

Explore Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Founded in 1849, this non-denominational cemetery spans 90 acres and holds a special place in the village's history.

A number of notable figures were laid to rest here, including the aforementioned author Washington Irving and businessmen William Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller, who are also brothers.

  • Hours: Open daily, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm; open weekends from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Visitors can either walk around the grounds or drive through; however, when visiting the cemetery, always be respectful. Please do not touch or sit on any monuments or mausoleums, and do not pick any of the flowers located around the property.

Stroll Through The Rockefeller State Park Preserve

Situated just northeast of Sleepy Hollow, this beautiful state park features more than 1,771 acres , which were donated to the state by the Rockefeller Family​​​​​​.

See the wood and stone bridges over the Pocantico River, marvel at the beauty of Swan Lake, or hike the wondrous trails to get lost in nature.

Tour The Old Dutch Reformed Church

Founded in 1685 , the 17th-century stone church is referenced in Irving's literary classic.

Located adjacent to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, the church's burial grounds span 2.5 acres and serve as the haunting grounds of the fictitious Headless Horseman.

See The Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse

A visit to this historical landmark is an absolute must during any day trip to one of the Hudson River's most beautiful towns .

The iconic lighthouse, which is known as the Tarrytown Light or Kingsland Point Light, is arguably one of the best things to see in Sleepy Hollow . Built in 1883, the five-story structure is one of the Hudson River's most stunning sights.

Visit Philipsburg Manor

The evocative structure and grounds shine a light on the state's colonial past.

A former mill and trading complex, visit the restored manor — which features a garden, an 18th-century Dutch barn, and a gristmill, among others — to learn about the enslaved Africans who lived and were forced to work there.

See The Headless Horseman Statue

Situated off of Old Broadway near the corner of Gordon Avenue, the steel sculpture of the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane, both characters from the classic tale, stands an impressive 18 feet tall and makes for a perfect photo op during a quick day trip to Sleepy Hollow.

Tour The Lyndhurst Mansion

Located about a ten-minute drive south of Sleepy Hollow, this opulent Gothic Revival country house lies on the banks of the Hudson River.

Spanning 67 acres, a number of guided tour options are offered to explore the expansive grounds.

  • Hours: Open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm (last entry at 4 pm; check the website for updated seasonal hours)
  • Cost: $10 per person for general admission to the grounds; additional fees vary for guided tours, which can be purchased online

In order to enter the grounds, a Daily Grounds Pass must be purchased online in advance. (No on-site entrance passes are sold on-site). The grounds pass does not include admission to the mansion; separate guided tours must be booked in advance.

Visit Washington Irving's Sunnyside

Located nearby the Lyndhurst Mansion, this historic house was the home of Washington Irving.

Explore the 10-acre property and learn all about the famed author, who is also known for writing 1819's "Rip Van Winkle."

Tour Kykuit, The Rockefeller Estate

Another one of Sleepy Hollow's most notable historical landmarks, Kykuit is among the best things to do in Sleepy Hollow in one day. It served as the home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, starting with the philanthropist and business magnate John D. Rockefeller.

It's also one of the best places in Sleepy Hollow for Instagram photos, thanks to its stunning estate grounds.

Stroll The Scenic Hudson RiverWalk Park At Tarrytown
