Accessibility Information and Safety Policy

Lost River Cave Boat Tour Safety and Accessibility Policy

Due to the natural, unalterable features of the cave, individuals who rely on wheelchairs or scooters for transport cannot be accommodated on the tour.  Guests with walkers and canes must be able to navigate the stairs, ramp, and boarding process.  Park staff will not transport or aid visitors using assistive equipment.

  Be Aware:

  • The cave tour is 45 minutes which includes a 20-minute guided walk to the cave entrance and a 25-minute ride on the boat through the cave.
  • The path to the cave’s entrance is on a 30-degree slope descending towards the cave. One must ascend the same 30-degree slope upon completion of the tour.
  • The tour will negotiate 15 steps, with as many as 12 in a single staircase along the guided walk.
  • When the tour arrives at the cave entrance, guests navigate 6 steps to the pre-boarding area for instructions and a flotation device. One additional step follows.
  • Guests then descend a 40-degree ramp leading them to the steel-grated boat dock.
  • Boarding the boat requires that visitors step down into the well of the boat; it will rock and sway as the balance is upset by the movement of passengers and the river current.
  • The water depth is 4 and 5 feet along the tour route.
  • On the boat tour, there is an area where the ceiling of the cave is very low. At this point, individuals in the boat bend forward (neck to knee) as the boat passes into AND out of the cave.
  • In the extremely rare event that a person finds their self out of the boat, it will be necessary to maneuver through the water to the exit.
  • Upon request, vehicles will be allowed to drive to the cave’s entrance at certain times of the day.
  • For individuals with or without disabilities who would prefer to experience the cave tour above ground, there is a free video of the tour available at the Visitors Center.

There’s so much more going on at Lost River Cave. Check out the full calendar of upcoming events.

underground cave boat tour

The Gorge Underground Kayak and SUP tours are fine for beginners. There is no wind, waves, or current in the mine, so it is a gentle, easy paddle. It is very dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides will have a spotlight to highlight different features of the mine. There will be a quick intro to paddling given for each craft before departure.

It’s 50 degrees underground, so dress in light athletic quick drying layers (you may get a bit damp depending on your paddling skill), extra pair of socks (no shoes allowed in clear kayaks), gloves (great idea) and comfortable shoes. Kids tends to get colder, so dress them warmly. We rent neoprene socks and mitts on the deluxe tours for $2.00 if needed.

We try our best to keep you dry, but there are times when you may get a little wet. There may be a little bit of water in the bottom of your kayak, and sometimes the seats are a bit wet. Some people also get wet from the water dripping off their paddles, but if you hold your paddle low this should not be a problem. There are also a few places in the mine where the water drips from the ceiling, but your guides will direct you around these places.

The mine stays a constant temperature of about 52 degrees year round, and the water temperature stays about 40 degrees.

No, it really doesn’t. The entire tour is underground in the mine, so our tours go out rain or shine! (In fact, some people prefer to go on a rainy day so they can do other activities when it’s sunny.)

Yes, we do have some tandem kayaks. If you would prefer to use a tandem with someone in your group, simply let the guides know when you get there, and they will pull out a tandem for you to use. Pricing is still by person.

We provide all necessary equipment.

Kayak Tours : Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Clear Bottom Kayak Tours:  Kayak, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

SUP Tours : NRS Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board or Hylife Sit & Stand Hybrid Board, Paddle, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp.

Boat Tour : Boat, PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

Ride Along Child Ticket: PFD, Helmet & Headlamp

The cave boat tour is probably the best choice if you have small children. All children need to be at least about 40 lbs. and able to wear a PFD and helmet and sit still for the full hour-long tour.

The Gorge Underground is dark, but everyone will have a helmet with a headlamp, and the guides also have spotlights to point out various features in the mine.

We’re sorry, but we cannot accommodate children under 3 years of age.

We have had a few, but it doesn’t happen very often at all. The kayaks are relatively stable and are safe even for beginners. The Stand Up Paddle boards are also very wide and stable. A guide with rescue training goes on every tour, just in case.

30 minutes prior to your tour time

Yes! We highly recommend booking tours in advance. In the busy season many of our tours will fill up, and during the slow season, we need to know what tours are going out so that we have guides available.

The tours last one hour, but you will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour time for check in and to put on gear.  Deluxe Tours  last 90 minutes for extra time to explore.

The Gorge Underground does not allow any pets on tour.

The Gorge Underground is open year round! We have more tours during the summer and fall, but we have tours available during every season! (The mine stays about 52 degrees year round, so the water in the mine never freezes!)

If you are coming with more than 12 people, we highly recommend our cave boat tour which can accommodate up to 20 people.

We limit our kayak tours to 12 people and our SUP tours to 10 because it becomes very difficult to hear the guides when you are spread out in a bigger group. For larger family groups or church/scout groups, we occasionally make exceptions to this rule at the manager’s discretion.

Yes! You can get a 10% group discount if you have at least 12 people and one person is paying for the whole group. For church/scout group discounts, please call the office at 844-254-6244.

(Group discounts and church/scout discounts are not available on Saturdays or holiday weekends.)

We understand that sometimes plans change. Please read our policy fully.

Due to the specialty nature of our events and our limited availability we  DO NOT OFFER REFUNDS.  Tickets can be rescheduled  NO LESS  than 7 days before event! A change fee of $10 will be applied per reservation. If you need to reschedule the week of the event you will be charged 50% of your booking as a rescheduling fee. Changes made less than 48 hours prior to tour are not allowed. Ensure you arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to your tour time.

No shows are not eligible for rescheduling, gift card, or refund.

We reserve the right to decline any person as a tour participant if the person’s behavior, health, or mental condition impedes the operation of the tour.

Lost River Cave, the underground cave boat tour in Kentucky

by Trey Copeland | Last updated Apr 11, 2024

underground cave boat tour

Lost River Cave is a 72 acre park right in the middle of Bowling Green that features a natural cave, hiking trails, river, beautiful rock formations and more. There is a 20 acre prairie that is currently being restored to its natural state including native grasses and flowers to promote natural habitat for our local wildlife.

Living in Kentucky, we’ve seen our fair share of caves, rivers and sink holes. We live on one of the largest karst systems and close to the nearby Mammoth Cave , the worlds longest cave system with 426 miles of known passageways.

lost river cave

If you have a scheduled boat tour, then I suggest you get to Lost River Cave at least 20 minutes early to check in and walk down to the cave. The tour is typically on time and they will begin the tour without you. We were a couple minutes behind and they had already began the tour telling the history of the cave.

Speaking of cave history, this cave is about 700,000 years old and has been used for many different purposes over the years. Jesse James even hid out in the cave while on the run from his Russellville Kentucky bank robbery .

The cave was used by Native Americans in the 1700s for shelter and water. It was also used as a popular night club in the 1900s. A mill was built on site to generate electricity for lights in the club at the cave entrance.

underground cave boat tour

The underground boat tour is a 45 minute tour where you follow along with a guide that provides a history lesson of the cave before entering. They are very knowledgeable about the cave and provide a lot of interesting facts.

The first 20 minutes is the walk along the rivers edge telling about Kentucky’s limestone formations and cave history. The massive entrance to the cave is where you will board the large flat bottom boat underground and take the rest of the 25 minutes to float in the 4-5 foot deep water exploring the natural formations of the cave.

If you have infants and children, you must wear the provided life jackets while on the boat.

trey and holten in lost river

Once your loaded on the boat, the tour begins.

The first formation you come to is a large limestone rock right above your head. You actually have to duck your head really far down, otherwise your head will hit it. It’s actually very dangerous and people hit their head often. You don’t want to come out with a bruise on your forehead!

Once you’ve passed the large overhead rock, you can sit up and the tour guide shines a flashlight at all the different stalactites and formations. They have named many of them. Some look like a hot dog and some look like a dinosaur t-rex.

inside lost river cave boat tour

At the back of the cave, the park has dammed it so that the tours can happen. If they did not dam the cave, then the water level would be too low for tours to happen.

This is where the boat parks for a few minutes to let you see the back of the cave and then it turns around and heads back out. It’s a pretty quick but you get to learn so much.

lost river cave inside the back

The Lost River Cave park has many other things to do besides the boat including a butterfly habitat where you can see all different species such as the Monarch, Painted Lady and the Red Admiral.

There’s a two mile nature trail that offers a gorgeous hike along the park. You can see Civil War history houses, blue holes and a natural spring. There are plenty of photo taking opportunities on the walk. During the Fall season, they host a Scarecrow Walk where different sponsors and local companies decorate scarecrows.

The Gem Mining is always a favorite with the kids. You can also visit the gift shop before you leave and pick up a wide variety of Lost River apparel that helps support the mission of the organization.

This Lesser-known U.S. Destination Is Hiding the 'Shortest, Deepest River in the World' — and an Underground Cave That Leads to a 'Blue Hole'

Kentucky's disappearing Lost River reappears in this underground cave, which hides the blue hole.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Several waterways flow through and around the community of Bowling Green, Kentucky , a small city that’s an hour north of Nashville. But one river, the aptly named Lost River, ends suddenly before reappearing magically in the mouth of the cave in the heart of Bowling Green. The natural phenomenon is the result of two geologic limestone formations that cover the river for a stretch, making it disappear before it reappears in the Lost River Cave .

This cave, and the river that runs through it, can be explored by boat, allowing visitors to venture into the Earth via the only natural underground boat tour in Kentucky. The most interesting part of the 25-minute boat tour is the blue hole, which gets its vibrant blue color from the abundance of limestone in the cave.

The blue hole is estimated to be 437 feet deep, while the river is only 400 feet long — a ratio that makes it the "shortest, deepest river in the world," according to Ripley’s Believe It or Not .

Long before the cave became a tourist attraction, it played an important role in the nation’s history. It was an ancient native hunting ground before serving as a Civil War campground. It was a hideout for the infamous outlaw Jesse James before being transformed into an underground nightclub in the 1930s.

The Lost River Cave sits below a wooded, urban 72-acre park in the center of Bowling Green. In addition to explorations below ground, there is plenty to do above ground. Hiking trails pass through woodlands and prairie and the Charlie Miller Butterfly Habitat houses native Kentucky butterfly species that can be viewed via a screened-in garden. There’s also a playground featuring all-natural elements and a gem mining activity that offers budding miners the chance to collect gems like rose quartz, amethyst, and amber, along with horn coral fossils.

The Lost River Cave boat tour runs daily and includes a 20-minute guided walk along the river’s edge followed by a 25-minute boat ride through the cave. The tour is appropriate for all ages, but because of the cave’s natural features, the experience is not accessible to people who rely on a wheelchair or scooter.

A boat tour is $23.95 for people over the age of 12, $16.95 for kids ages 4 to 12, and $5.95 for kids who are 3 and under.

Take a day trip adventure to Kentucky’s only underground boat cave tour.

Lost River Cave is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

"So our claim to fame is the shortest, deepest river in the world; the only river that is deeper than it is long," Becky Madison, tour guide at Lost River Cave, said.

Boat tours began in 1988 and they continue today. Tours last around 45 minutes.

A portion of the tour is a walk along the valley toward the valley cave under a low-hanging rock.

“This is locally known as the wishing rock because once you hit your head, you're going to wish you didn't," Madison said.

The tour brings folklore and facts together to provide "unforgettable stories" of Lost River Cave.

Explore an Underground Lake in a Glass-Bottom Boat in This Tennessee Town

Sweetwater, Tennessee is home to The Lost Sea, America’s largest underground lake.

underground cave boat tour

You've probably heard of the Dead Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. They may even be on your travel bucket list, but have you ever heard of The Lost Sea? The Lost Sea, located in the eastern Tennessee town of Sweetwater, is America's largest underground lake, and it's open to visitors year-round.

The Lost Sea is part of Craighead Caverns, a massive network of caves that runs from Sweetwater all the way to the neighboring town of Madisonville. The huge cavern system has quite the history and has been used by animals and humans for thousands of years.

The cave's first-known human residents were the Cherokees who entered the cave from a tiny natural opening on the side of the mountain. In a large room about one mile from the cave's entrance, artifacts including pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry were found, proving that Native Americans once used the caves.

Though the caves have been used for years, the Lost Sea wasn't discovered until 1905, when a 13-year-old boy named Ben Sands was exploring the caves and found himself in a room half-filled with water.

Today, visitors can see what young Ben first discovered more than 100 years ago on a tour of the caves through The Lost Sea Adventure . The company operates tours every day of the year, minus Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, from 9 a.m. to anywhere between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Note: Tours are temporarily closed through March 2023 for construction and maintenance.

WATCH: Why Travelers Are Flocking to Ginnie Springs, One of Florida's Most Beautiful Natural Wonders

The guided tour starts with a three-quarter-mile walk on sloping pathways through the caves. While walking, you'll learn all about about the history and science behind the caves. When you've descended 140 feet into the cave, you'll reach The Lost Sea. From there, you'll continue the tour via a boat outfitted with a glass insert on the bottom, so you can peer into the depths that lie beneath. The visible portion of the lake is 800 feet long and 220 feet wide, spanning more than four acres. However, divers have mapped more than 13 acres of water, and there's still more to be discovered.

While on the boat, look out for rainbow trout swimming below and magnificent crystal formations called anthodites overhead. Also known as cave flowers, these naturally occurring formations are composed of long needle-like crystals that radiate from a common base and are only found in a few caves around the world.

Who knew we had such an amazing natural wonder right in our own backyard? At just $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children, this is one adventure you can't miss.

The Lost River Cave is a seven-mile cave system located in Bowling Green, Kentucky in the USA. The river originates outside of the cave and flows into it. Four blue holes are situated in the surrounding area of the Lost River Cave . The river was named ”Lost River” because the source and mouth of the river had not been discovered yet. As stated by Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the river is the shortest and deepest river in the world , as the river is only 400 feet deep while the blue hole is 437 feet deep.

Lost river cave entrance

The Lost River Cave’s history started back in 8,500 B.C. Native Americans buried their dead at the cave’s entrance and used it as a shelter . In the late 1700s, several of Warren County’s oldest businesses were situated near the entrance to the cave. There was a distillery, a sawmill, a wool carding and a grist mill among them.

The entrance to lost river cave showcases a historic water wheel that once powered the site's operations.

The Lost River Cave played a significant role during the Civil War . The cave served as a makeshift refuge for Confederate and Union troops in 1869. According to local tradition, the cave was allegedly used as a hideout by Jesse James and his band of outlaws.

For almost 30 years, it was also home to the Underground Nite Club served as a meeting spot for local socialites . This ballroom-style hangout, which was established in the 1930s had a bar and a dancefloor. The club ultimately shut down in the early 1960s as a result of laws prohibiting the selling of alcohol below street level.

Beyond the boat tour and cave exploration, Lost River Cave offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy . Guests can check in at the visitor center to access the 72-acre park, which features a riverwalk, walking tours, the valley’s blue hole trails, and 2.5 miles of nature trails great for hiking. Visitors can take in the fresh air by exploring the nature center, discovering natural springs and limestone cliffs , and investigating the remains of old mining structures .

There is also an enclosed garden of Kentucky native butterflies , a seasonal butterfly habitat, and an attraction for tourists that is open from late May through mid-September. There is also a bird sanctuary where more than 130 species of birds can be seen .

There is also an outdoor classroom for kids to explore nature in new ways . Ziplining is another adventure! The Flying Squirrel and the Lightning Bug are two distinct zip lines. Three zip lines start at the top of 80-foot treetops on the Flying Squirrel Zipline, which is intended for older children and adults.

Gilman’s at the Cave is a comprehensive jewelry and lapidary supply store located within the cave itself . They offer a wide range of stones, crystals, findings, and equipment to cater to collectors, stone-cutters, and jewelry makers alike.

There is also a cavern nightclub, which features the original bandstand and bar from the 1930s Night Club and a glimmering crystal chandelier . People can do corporate events from birthday parties to grand wedding celebrations.

Ocean Insights: Hear From Our Experts

Dr. Rabiah ryklief

By Dr. Rabiah Ryklief

The Lost River Cave is a fascinating example of karst topography. This landscape is characterized by soluble bedrock, primarily limestone in this case, which has been sculpted by the slow but persistent action of water. Over millennia, rainwater, slightly acidic due to dissolved carbon dioxide, seeped through cracks and fissures in the rock, gradually dissolving the limestone and creating a network of underground passages and caverns. The Lost River itself is a unique feature within this karst system. It emerges from underground springs, flows briefly above ground, and then disappears again into the cave's entrance, known as the Blue Hole. This disappearance and reappearance of the river is a classic example of a sinking stream, a hallmark of karst regions. The geology of the Lost River Cave is not only visually stunning but also scientifically significant. It provides a window into the Earth's history, revealing the processes that have shaped this region over millions of years. By studying the cave's formations, scientists can glean insights into past climates, geological events, and even the evolution of life in this unique subterranean ecosystem.

How much does it cost to go on an underground boat cave trip?

For adults (13+ years), the price of the boat trip is around $23; for youth (4-12 years), the price is $17; and for children (3 and under), the price is $6.

Is the Lost River Cave open year-round?

Lost River Cave is a year-round destination. But the best time to visit the Lost River Cave is late May through mid-September when visitors can witness native Kentucky butterflies.

Can we kayak in the Lost River Cave?

Visitors can kayak in the Lost River Cave, but they need a prior reservation.

What Is the folklore about the Lost River Cave? Is it true?

There is folklore associated with each blue hole at the Lost River Cave. According to these tales, young girls would gaze into the river in the hopes of seeing the reflection of the man they should marry. The folklore has no evidence that can be found saying it is true.

How deep is the blue hole at the Lost River Cave?

The blue hole at Lost River Cave is 16 feet deep at the visible surface, but it connects to a deeper underground river system that has been measured at over 437 feet deep. This unique geological feature has earned the Lost River the title of “shortest, deepest river in the world” by Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Here Are The Best Times And Places To View Tennessee’s Fall Foliage In 2024

When the summer heat starts to fade and the crisp air starts to roll in, there is always one question on everyone’s mind: when do leaves change color in Tennessee? We know it is inevitable, and soon the fiery array of fall colors will be seen all across our state, but navigating it can be tricky. Our good friends at the Smoky Mountains have set up a super helpful fall foliage map to pinpoint the perfect peak foliage in Tennessee to see your favorite overlooks or scenic drives.

Tennessee is a very interesting state when it comes to fall colors. We tend to experience fall later on in the season than most of our northern neighbors, and the change happens more gradually.

alt

That being said, higher elevations will see the colors change first. Some spots near the Smokies might start seeing patchy foliage as early as mid-September. Near the early part of October is where eastern Tennessee should be seeing lots more change. One of the first places you should visit is up to Roan Mountain . Hike the balds for fantastic fall foliage views of what seems like an endless mountain range.

For 2024, the first three weeks of October are looking to be the perfect time to visit the Smokies.

alt

This national park is always beautiful, but in the fall, the park transforms into the perfect picture of fall foliage. If you arrive early in October, then The Foothills Parkway is where you will want to take a scenic drive. The Parkway overlooks the mountains which should be producing some incredible scenery at that time of the month.

If you happen to be in the Smokies closer to the second or third week in October, Cades Cove would be your best bet to see fall colors.

Being in a valley, you will find that the leaves change a little later, but when that time finally comes, it's a ravishing spectacle to behold. This is also a great place to watch for wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for bears, deer, and the myriad creatures that call this park home.

If you're in middle Tennessee, expect a peak in fall colors sometime near the end of October.

During this time, make your way to your favorite spot anywhere on the Cumberland Plateau for phenomenal views of the autumn leaves. Places like South Cumberland State Park or Savage Gulf State Park will offer sweeping views of the mountains with a fiery array of colors. Or hike through the woods and find a lovely waterfall to spend the day chasing. Finally, another great option is to take a day driving The Natchez Trace for a slower way to savor the season's splendor.

There are so many scenic places to enjoy the fall colors in Tennessee that it would be impossible to name them all.

alt

West Tennessee will experience "peak" fall foliage last.

This is forecasted to happen between the first and second weeks of November. A great spot to see the leaves change in this region would be at Reelfoot Lake State Park . The leaves changing on the cypress trees are a sight like no other.

Now you know the answer to your burning question: When do leaves change color in Tennessee?

Planning a trip to take full advantage of the fall foliage? I highly suggest you do! It’s time to get outside and start seeing this amazing natural cycle happen right before your very eyes. So no matter where you call home in our wonderful state, make sure to check out the Smoky Mountains fall foliage predictions and plan for an epic autumn adventure.

We Found This Magnificent Natural Wonder In Tennessee That’s Located Only .2 Miles From The Parking Lot

One beautiful summer day we did the Sewanee Natural Bridge hike and it was easy to see why many people have said this is a must-see natural wonder. The town itself was a charming little community and this hidden gem in Tennessee located in the forest was just the cherry on top. When you are looking for short and easy hikes in Tennessee this is a tough one to beat with very little work and a huge payoff.

We first started our journey by driving around town. Cruising up and down the streets of a small town can be a good indicator of the culture of the community. Sewanee residents are a proud group of folks who display their love for the college just about everywhere you look.

alt

Sewanee’s University of the South was high on my list of places to see. The campus is filled with castle-like buildings and is honestly one of the prettiest colleges I have ever visited. I felt like I was stepping into a fantasy novel or walking the halls of Hogwarts. It was truly a magical place.

Just down the road from the beautiful spires of the college campus was the Sewanee Natural Bridge. We knew this hidden gem was waiting for us so we continued down the street. From the trailhead, you will walk down a set of stairs to this incredible arch.

alt

My favorite part was that the trail leads directly to the top of the bridge! We were able to hike right over the thin section that spans 50 feet long and 25 feet above the ground.

alt

I am pretty surefooted when it comes to large drop-offs and dare to approach ledges at death-defying heights... so I know I don’t speak for everyone when I say the narrow passageway over the arch was not scary. However, my wife -- who is much less comfortable with heights -- was cautiously optimistic and said it didn’t bother her either.

Once we were down below there were caves to explore carved out of the limestone and we had plenty of rocks to climb on. I just stood in awe of this massive structure while my kids jumped around the rocks.

alt

It was a quick stop and we had plenty of other adventures planned that day but we took our time to fully soak in this glorious spot. Making time to slow down during an adventure day is a life-giving experience as we just listen to the birds chirping and the light blow of the breeze through the canopy above. This is the pace at which you notice little things like the sun peeking over the surface of the bridge or a brilliantly colored mushroom popping up throufh the rock crevices.

alt

We were blessed to be able to stop at this location and is a very short hike I would highly recommend. This trail is technically located in the South Cumberland State Park and is the only natural bridge in South Cumberland State Park.

alt

The Sewanee Natural Bridge hike was a blast for my family and me. With a short walk down the stairs, you can barely call this a "hike" -- and the pay-off is huge! Walking over the bridge was a big highlight for me and certainly is a memorable experience here in the Volunteer State. To see more about the trail to the Sewanee Natural Bridge make sure to download AllTrails for helpful and up-to-date user input. Bunker No. 42

This underground bunker next to Taganskaya metro station was built in the 1950s at the height of the Cold War. Its entrance is camouflaged by an ordinary 19th-century house with its walls hiding a six-meter thick cement cap. The bunker itself is located at a depth of 65 meters (or the equivalent of 17 floors below ground) at the same level as the circle metro line.

This underground complex occupies more than 7,000 square meters and is divided into four blocks of tunnels. The reserve headquarters of the General Staff of the Air Force were located here, so that work could go on even if Moscow was under nuclear attack. The temperature inside the bunker is 16° Celsius.

In 2006 the Museum of the Cold War opened in the bunker. It is an interactive museum: visitors can try on Soviet-era military uniforms, handle the weapons, explore formerly secret tunnels wearing helmets and protection suits, try out the responsibilities of a radiotelegraphist and even “launch” nuclear warheads by pressing the infamous red button.

Stalin’s Bunker

Stalin’s Bunker is located near the Izmailovskaya metro station. Its construction dates back to the 1930s and was planned as the reserve headquarters of the Supreme Commander of the Soviet Union. It was connected to the Kremlin by a 17-kilometer underground tunnel.

Stalin worked here in late November and early December 1941 at the beginning of World War II. It was in this bunker that the decision was made not to abandon Moscow and to defend it at all costs.

In 1996 the bunker was turned into a museum and opened to visitors. The bunker itself is relatively small with only the most essential spaces: a conference room, an office, a room for rest, the generals’ office, supply rooms and a refectory.

The  underground  river

underground cave boat tour

  Source: mosextreme.ru

The Neglinnaya River is a left tributary of the Moscow River that proceeds for 7.5 kilometers. It is as ancient as the capital itself with the first references to this river in old chronicles coinciding with the first mentions of Moscow.

The river’s origin is in the area near Marina Roshcha. From there it passes under the city center and Aleksandrovsky Garden before flowing into the Moscow River through a big stone opening in the embankment that can be seen from the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge. The Neglinnaya River flows through a pipe for most of its length. A private company organizes an excursion along one part of the stone tunnel. However, even a planned excursion can be abruptly cancelled because of rain as the water in the river frequently floods.

The Neglinnaya River is considered one of the most mystical places in Moscow: frequent visitors often see ghosts in the tunnel. To enter the stone tunnel you have to go through a sewer located in the area of the Stretensky Boulevard metro station. http://mosextreme.ru/dungeon

Syani  stone  mines

underground cave boat tour

Source: mosextreme.ru

These stone mines provided the limestone needed to build the fortresses and churches of the white-stone buildings of Moscow. They began to be exploited in the 17 th  century. During the Soviet period stone was excavated here to reinforce airplane runways and during World War II a military hospital and later on a seismic station were located here.

In 1974 the entrance to the Syani mines was filled in. By that time its system of underground tunnels exceeded 90 kilometers. On June 3, 1988 underground enthusiasts unsealed one of the entrances and in 2007 it was substantially restored by local inhabitants and regular visitors to the mines.

Regular visitors call themselves “sistemshchiki,” which is slang related to the Soviet hippie movement. A particular subculture has developed around these caves with its traditions, rules, myths and rituals.

The height of the tunnels of the Syani mines network ranges between 0.4 and 3.5 meters and their depth reaches up to 30 meters. The temperature inside the caves is usually in the range of 7-10 °Celsius. To reach the entrance to the caves, take bus number 439 from Domodedovskaya metro station and get off at the stop “Pochta.” The journey takes about 35 minutes.

Need a cool down? Check out these caves and caverns near Delaware

Portrait of Molly McVety

This summer has brought sweltering temperatures that have left people nostalgic for the months of days under 70 degrees. Luckily, if you’re looking for a cooler summer getaway, there are some natural wonders that remain in the mid-50s all year-round.

When you’re planning your next day trip, check out some natural getaways in these caves and caverns in and around Delaware.

A warning: The caves and caverns listed below are not considered wheelchair-accessible due to their steep slopes and narrow passageways.

Here are some (literally) underground tourist attractions to check out for your next road trip.

Beaver Valley Rock Shelter Site

810 Beaver Valley Road, Brandywine Hundred

If you’re looking for a spelunking adventure, you don't have to drive across state lines.

Located at Delaware’s border off Beaver Dam Road, in true Delaware fashion, this cave is relatively small – just 56 feet long. In the non-winter months, the surrounding greenery can make it hard to spot. But there is a small trail at Beaver Dam Road and Beaver Valley Road where visitors can walk up, turn right after the house and navigate through the woodsy terrain to the cave’s opening.

Beaver Valley Cave, other than being the inspiration for the cave featured in the “Dead Poets Society” movie, is Delaware’s only known cave that the public can explore. It is believed that Native American inhabitants in the state used Beaver Valley Cave as shelter and storage places.

Lost River Caverns

726 Durham St., Hellertown, Pennsylvania, www.lostcave.com

Located an easy 1½-hour drive from Wilmington, Lost River Caverns is not only a neat geological wonder, but also a perfect trip for the whole family to enjoy.

The cavern itself is relatively small, but also includes a nature trail and picnic area on the site’s grounds. Lost River Caverns got its name from the river that runs through the cavern, coming from an unknown origin and disappearing beneath the cavern’s surface.

Guided walking tours of the limestone cavern are around 45 minutes long and teach visitors about the geology and history of the area.

There are five chambers of the cavern to check out with rock and crystal formations that have forged themselves over millions of years. For the recreational geologists, there is also a gift shop where you can make your own mineral or crystal souvenir to take home.

Reservations are required for visiting Lost River Caverns. Adults can book a reservation for $16; children ages 3-12 can enter for $11.

The cavern tours run daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. until Labor Day. Hours change slightly in the winter months, operating from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on weekends.

Crystal Cave

963 Crystal Cave Road, Kutztown, Pennsylvania, www.cryystalcavepa.com

Located about an hour and 45 minutes from Wilmington, guides at Crystal Caves take guests down a 125-foot descent underground to a historic crystal cave. The tour takes about an hour and showcases all of the rock formations and natural sculptures the cave has created over time. The cave is 54 degrees Fahrenheit year-round (you might want to take a sweater).

After the tour ends, the exploring is far from over. Guests can try their luck at gemstone panning with a purchased bag of dirt from the cave – the perfect activity for amateur or recreational geologists. Guests also can walk along the scenic hiking trail in the nearby woods, with over 300,000 evergreen trees that have been planted over the years.

An ice cream parlor and mini golf course are open seasonally to occupy visitors.

People over the age of 12 can tour Crystal Cave for $20, while ages 4 to 11 can enter for $15. Mini golf and gemstone panning cost an additional $6 and $8, respectively.

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the cave is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays, and closes at 7 p.m. on weekends. After Labor Day through September, the caves are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on weekends. Between October and April, hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and the landmark is closed December through February.

Crystal Grottoes Caverns

19821 Shepherdstown Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, www.crystalgrottoescaverns.com

Crystal Grottoes Caverns is Maryland’s only cave open to the public, sitting just under a two-hour drive from Wilmington.

The caverns were discovered accidentally in 1920 when the State Roads Commission was quarrying for limestone to build Maryland’s Route 34. The cavern was opened to the public two years later and has been in business ever since.

The cavern has remained in the same natural form since its discovery and claims to have the most formations per square foot than any other cave in the world. Experts will guide visitors through the perpetually 54-degree caverns and showcase the geology and history behind the site.

Tours are given every half-hour between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Standard admission for adults runs at $23, and kids between the ages of 5 and 12 get in for $13.

Echo Dell, Indian Echo Caverns

368 Middletown Road, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, www.indianechocaverns.com

Indian Echo Caverns is a limestone cave estimated to be over 440 million years old. Tours of the caverns last around 45 minutes, and a qualified guide will teach guests the history and geology of the caverns and areas.

Echo Dell, a two-hour drive from Wilmington, also just happens to be minutes away from one of the region’s most beloved amusement parks, Hershey Park.

Indian Echo Caverns also hosts a gem mill junction where guests can search for gemstones like amethyst, jasper, calcite and even fossils from the caves. These minerals and crystals can be formed into customizable jewelry on the site. Families also can enjoy the picnic areas, playground and petting zoo on Echo Dell’s grounds.

Strollers are not allowed inside the caverns, and closed-toed shoes are recommended. The caverns are 52 degrees year-round, so it also is recommended to take a light cover to stay warm.

Admission for anyone 12 and older is $24.50, and those 65 and older can be admitted for $22. Echo Dell is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. until Labor Day, and between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. between Labor Day and Memorial Day.

Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park

222 Penn’s Cave Road, Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, www.pennscave.com

If you’re willing to make a slightly longer drive for a true national landmark, then Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park is the destination to hit.

Located around a 3½-hour drive from Wilmington, Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park is America’s only all-water cavern. The surrounding area is a farm-nature-wildlife park that stretches 1,600 acres.

Tours of the cavern are just under an hour and are given entirely by boat. After climbing 48 steps to the dock entrance, the boat will guide guests through the caves and its naturally formed sculptures, some of which resemble figures like the Statue of Liberty. The cavern is naturally cooled at 52 degrees year-round.
