Traveling to the Maldives – A Month-by-Month Guide to the Best Times to Go

The Maldives is hot and sunny all year, with average temperatures of between 23ºC / 74ºF and 31ºC / 88 ºF, making it an ideal year-round destination for some fun in the sun. There are, however, better times of the year to travel to the Maldives, as some months see higher rainfall and winds than others. The island nation enjoys the best weather between November and April with full days of sunshine, warm air and sea temperatures, and very little rainfall. The monsoon season runs between May and October, peaking around June, with the northern atolls seeing the highest rainfall between May and November, and the southern atolls between November and March.

Dry Season and Wet Season

The dry season in the Maldives typically runs from around mid-December through early May, but these tend to change each year. The Northeast Monsoon season, which is most prevalent in the northern atolls, actually occurs between November and March, but due to being the dry season, it rarely amounts to anything more than a quick downpour or shower,  a couple times a week. The rainy season in the Maldives runs from early May through mid-December, with the Southwest Monsoon season (in the southern atolls) officially being in July and August.

Cloudbursts and Sunshine

Typical of the tropics, when it rains in the Maldives, it pours down heavily for a short time and then clears up just as quickly. Even during the dry season, it is not unusual to have a brief, torrential downpour in the afternoon, followed by a beautifully clear and balmy evening. During the rainy season, it tends to rain more at night, so days are sunny and bright with just a few interspersed clouds and some light rainfall. It’s rare to have more than a few cloudy days per week with sunny days in between.

It is relatively humid all year round in the Maldives with a typically muggy tropical feel, which takes a few days to become acclimatized to. The temperature, however, rarely peaks much above the averages, so even the high humidity is never unbearable like it can be in Mediterranean Europe during the hottest summer months.

Being an archipelagic island nation strung through a vast portion of the Indian Ocean, steady winds cross through the Maldives throughout the year, bringing cool breezes to the islands. During the Southern Hemisphere winter, which lasts from March until October, the North-East and South-West monsoons bring off-shore winds that create beautiful, peaking surfing waves for those who are there to surf.

March in the Maldives sees temperatures rising to an average of 30°C / 88°F which are great for long, lazy days on the beach, sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming. There might be a few possible short bursts of rain, which offer relief from the steaming temperatures, and visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba-diving . March is also the beginning of the surfing season in the Maldives, which brings beautiful waves and last until October. During this ‘surfing season,’ the biggest waves are most likely to occur between June and August, caused by storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago.

  • The Maldives in April

This is another gorgeously hot month in the Maldives with temperatures reaching into the mid-30s / 80s. • The Maldives in May

Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still enjoyable. Be aware that if there are thunderstorms in the area, it’s not a good idea to be in the water, so head down to the beach for some water-based activities. May also sees the start of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives), bringing some restrictions to local islands.

The Maldives in May: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

High: 31°C/87°F

Rain: 216 mm/8.5″

  • The Maldives in June

While June has a high chance of rainfall and reduced visibility due to the plankton in the water, this is a fantastic time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the vast amounts of plankton in the water. This month sees many of the resorts offering special deals where visitors can enjoy the plethora of non-beach and water-based amenities that they have to offer. The holy month of Ramadan (Ramazan) continues into June.

The Maldives in June: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Rain: 173 mm/6.8″

  • The Maldives in July

The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is a particularly good time of the year for surfers with the largest waves stemming from the storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago. Swell is amazingly consistent during this time of the year, with the average wave measuring two to eight-foot in height. It is also still a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the enormous amounts of plankton in the water. The 26th July is the Maldivian Independence Day and sees parades and public celebrations on most of the resort islands.

The Maldives in July: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Rain: 147 mm/5.8″

The Maldives in September: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Rain: 244 mm/9.6″

October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and full days of rain. This is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season, with the South-West monsoons, which occur between May and October, providing outstanding surfing the Northern and Central Atolls. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still, a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks.

When is the best time to go to the Maldives?

First things first: there's not really any such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . Whether your holiday to the Indian Ocean’s pièce de résistance is a romantic escape, a getaway with friends or a solo adventure, you're in for an incredible experience.

That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. Our seasonal guide to the Maldives will ensure you don't pick the wrong month for a relaxing honeymoon or miss out on the underwater experience of your dreams.

All that’s left for you to decide is  which island is right for you . Just a word of warning – with 1192 to choose from, this is easier said than done…

January to March is the best time for fantastic weather

If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.

Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

April to August is a great time to bag a bargain

Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.

Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.

A surfer rides a waves.

June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives

June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.

July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations

The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.

Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.

A person diving alongside a manta ray in the Maldives

October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting

Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.

If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.

December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun

Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. At the Hard Rock Maldives and the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort , for example, Santa typically makes regular visits on his jet-ski, and almost every resort will drape its palm trees with fairy lights.

One way to offset the higher prices is by opting for a resort that can be reached by speedboat (the cost of which is normally included in the room rate), rather than a more expensive seaplane journey. Weather-wise, expect around seven hours of sunshine a day and daytime temperatures of around 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures are slightly cooler, but still hover around a perfectly pleasant 20°C (68°F) – the ideal temperature for a post-Christmas-dinner dip in the ocean, we reckon.

Weather in the Maldives

Best time to visit for scuba diving, best time to visit to save on flights and accommodations.

  • Month-by-Month Breakdown
  • Frequently Asked Questions

The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.

The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.

  • The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
  • The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.

What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.

The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

Find out more in our detailed guide to the weather and climate in the Maldives .

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.

Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.

If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.

Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.

Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.

May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.

The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.

The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.

January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.

Events to check out:

  • Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.

February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.

  • Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.

The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. Some resorts offer special deals, as peak season winds down later in the month.

The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. This produces a lot more rain, consisting of afternoon showers that increase in frequency from mid-month. The number of rainy days per month averages about six in the north and 12 in the south. Keep an eye out for additional special deals, as long as you avoid traveling around Easter.

  • Ramadan: The Maldives is an Islamic country and the holy month of Ramadan begins early April in 2022 (the exact date varies each year according to the Islamic calendar). Resort islands aren't affected but restaurants will be closed on local islands, as Muslims fast all day.

Resorts drop their prices in early May. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives during the second half of the month. It reaches the southern part of the country first and proceeds north. The second half of May can be particularly wet, with high possibility of storms and whole days of rain. Diving visibility is reduced. Ramadan concludes on Eid in early May 2022, with families gathering to feast.

The southwest monsoon covers the whole country by early June. Expect quite a lot of clouds, morning and evening drizzle, and some torrential downpours. Resorts continue to offer discounted rates to entice guests. If you're planning to visit the Maldives in June, the southern atolls are preferable. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.

The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.

  • Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.

August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.

The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.

  • National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.

The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.

The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.

Events to check out :

  • Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
  • Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.

December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. However, it lessens in the north as the month goes on. Many tourists visit the Maldives for the Christmas-New Year period. The resorts hold special buffets and gala dinners for these occasions. In addition to super high prices, it's common for resorts to have minimum stay length requirements.

  • Fishermen’s Day (Dec. 10) honors the country's fishermen, who contribute greatly to the economy. Educational and fun events about traditional fishing are organized. You'll be able to devour delicious seafood too!

If you want good weather, visit during the dry season from December to April. However, prices are at their highest during these months.

The Maldives are expensive year-round, but September is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels. However, it's also the peak of the rainy season and the weather can be unpredictable.

The monsoon season begins mid-May and lasts until November. During these months, rainstorms are frequent and can last a couple of minutes or a couple of days, but the weather during these months is sporadic.

Maldives Weather in October: What You Need to Know Before Traveling

Maldives has within it, one of the most unique geographical makeups on the planet. An archipelago that stretches 820 km long & 130 km wide, which is somewhat large for an island nation. Each island has a white, powder-like sandy beach that is well protected by a bed of coral that sports a multitude of colours & multiple species of fauna that calls the corals their home. And when you look further out, you see a blue-green, aquamarine ocean that holds an unparalleled beauty above & below the surface of the water. It’s no wonder that Maldives is a world-renowned vacation spot that has people from every corner of the globe flocking towards this pristine destination.

Maldives lies on the equator, which is the reason why it is home to only 2 seasons throughout the year: a dry season & a wet season. The dry season  ranges from November to April & the wet season ranges from May to October. October is mostly known as a transitional month, where the weather changes from wet to dry. Due to this, the weather in Maldives in October can be a bit unpredictable as it has the tendency to swing from sunny to rainy every so often.

With that in mind, let’s put the month of October into the spotlight and continue with the inquiry & title of this article: Maldives Weather In October: What You Need to Know Before Travelling, a must-read if you’re travelling to Maldives in October!

Maldives Weather In October & Activities You Can Partake In

Maldives Weather in October

When we’re talking about Maldives weather , October has a bit more nuance to it. While the sun is out, expect temperatures to go up to 31℃ / 87℉ (perfect for sunbathing & swimming)  & a cooling 26℃ / 79℉ during nighttime. As for the temperature in the sea, it is seen to hold at 28℃ / 83℉ all throughout, a reasonably comfortable amount.

Expect about 15 days of rain, with precipitation getting to 207mm / 8.15in throughout the month. When taking a look from a weekly perspective, rain will fall an average of 3.6 days a week more or less.

When it comes to wind, it is quite mild and almost unnoticeable at times, with the average wind scale reading being at 3 for the month of October.

All in all, it looks decent for the pluviophiles but even those who don’t like rain can find solace in these weather conditions & enjoy their vacation.

We all know that rain does have the tendency to ruin travel plans & sadly, that is the case in Maldives in October weather, but only on a few days though. Don’t expect your diving, snorkelling or any other water sport or boat-related activity to go through, as the ocean can get quite rough when it rains, due to the wind picking up out at sea.

Instead, when it does rain, you should opt for a land-based activity (such as going to the spa for a massage, taking a bike ride at the risk of getting wet, a trip to the sauna, sign up for a cooking class or any other activity on land) as it is advisable to stay out of the water while rainfall occurs.

However, when the rain does subside, there are a few things that you can do in the water that will still crank up the fun aspect of your trip to its max, such as surfing. Maldives is known for some pretty decent wave potential and surfers from around the world can’t help but surf whenever they come to Maldives. Another thing you can do is take a ride on a banana boat, something that can prove to be quite fun with your significant other or with friends & family. The more the merrier when it comes to this wild ride across the surface of the ocean.

When the rain stops in October, you can expect the skies to be splattered with a light blue accompanied by low humidity that tops off your vacation. Because October is a seasonal transition month, it tends to not be as hot as the dry season, along with a cloudless atmosphere where you can bake yourself without too much worry of sunburn.

What To Pack For Maldives In October

What To Pack For Maldives In October

If you’re going to go to any sort of tropical setting, it is advisable to take with you any sort of clothing that is breathable & light , especially for the weather in Maldives October. We’re talking clothes like tank tops, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, sundresses, any sort of clothing that has breathability. As for the type of fabric you should think about wearing, fabrics such as cotton, nylon, polyester & silk are amazing contenders to take with you so that you don’t sweat too much while in the sun.

Let’s not forget, the best choice you can make when it comes to walking around is going to be a pair of flip-flops or any sort of open footwear. Of course, this is just for when you travel around outside of the resort like if you decide to go to the capital of Maldives known as Male’, but other than that, walking around barefoot at the resort tends to be the norm but perhaps not EVERYWHERE at the resort.

You would also obviously need to protect yourself from the sun when you do come here so the ideal friend for any sort of sunbather is going to be sunscreen! Anything that has an SPF from 30 to 50 will serve you well in Maldives. Just remember to keep applying it whenever you go out into the sun to get the nice & tanned look instead of the red & sore look.

Another thing you need to bring with you, and this is exclusive to mostly nighttime in Maldives, is mosquito repellant. Due to the fact that it still tends to rain a bit in October, you will be greeted by mosquitos once the sun goes down & the temperature gets a bit cooler. If red blotches on your skin aren’t your style, then take care to bring some decent mosquito repellant with you to stave off these buzzy & uninvited guests.

The Best Time to Visit the Maldives

These are the best times to visit the Maldives for great weather, fun activities, and more.

visit maldives in october

A tropical paradise in the northern Indian Ocean, the Maldives offers soft, white sands, bright blue waters, and a perfect place to unplug and truly relax in a luxurious setting. The archipelago gets more popular every year, so if you want to snag one of its famous overwater bungalows for yourself, you'll want to have an idea of the best and worst times to go. As a general rule of thumb, remember that the islands' high season runs from November to April, while low season lasts from May to October.

Whether you're looking for ideal weather, fewer crowds, or the perfect diving conditions, here are the very best times to visit the Maldives.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Smaller Crowds

Since the Maldives consists of nearly 1,200 islands spread across 35,000 square miles, you can usually expect desert-island solitude here no matter when you visit. Popular resorts and dive sites can fill up in the high season, but outside the bustling capital city of Malé, truly large crowds are fairly rare.

That said, if you want the best chance of having an island (almost) to yourself, you might want to visit between May and October. This touristic low period coincides with the island's rainy season — so, while a trip at this time might mean less-than-perfect weather, it also means maximum seclusion. This is especially true in May and June, which typically see fewer visitors than any other months.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Good Weather

The Maldives offers tropical warmth throughout the year, so it may seem hard to call any one season better than the others. To understand the climate here, though, remember that the usual four seasons — spring, summer, fall, and winter — aren't as important as the archipelago's big two: dry season and wet season.

The dry season, between November and April, offers Maldivian weather at its best. Temperatures are almost always in the 80s, perfect for days spent relaxing on a beach, and rainfall is scant, particularly from January through March. Humidity can be expected in this season (and throughout the year), but otherwise, conditions should be ideal for a sunny seaside trip. Just remember that this pleasant weather does make dry season the most popular — and, therefore, expensive — time of year.

The wet season, meanwhile, runs from May to October, and its name is no joke — some islands can experience up to nine inches of rain per month at this time of year. While short afternoon storms are very common during wet season, back-to-back days of pure sunshine aren't unheard of. Because of this variability, rainy-season visitors should simply be flexible and ready to adjust plans on the fly in the event of inclement weather.

Most Affordable Times to Visit the Maldives

Yes, even a visit to the Maldives can be affordable if you know how to plan. Since most travelers visit during the dry season, the rainy season from May to October is the best time to save. At this time of year, airfare is less expensive, package deals are more common, and even those beloved bungalows (while still pricey) see significant markdowns in price. Booking in advance can also help reduce costs.

Even outside of the low season, though, some general tips can help you snag a Maldives vacation on a budget . When it comes to flights, try getting more creative than booking your local airline's most straightforward route. Low-cost carriers in Asia and even Europe offer bargain prices on flights to the Maldives, so flying to an international hub first and then hopping on a budget flight to Malé can net big savings. To save money on accommodations, try staying at an Airbnb or a locally run guesthouse instead of a traditional high-end resort. You might miss out on some luxury touches, but you'll still get to enjoy the islands' gorgeous beaches and stunning sea life for a fraction of the cost.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Diving and Water Sports

In addition to wet and dry seasons, there are also seasons in the Maldives when different water sports are most popular. There's no shortage of activities to enjoy here in or on the water, from surfing to boating to scuba diving, but the best time of year for one won't necessarily be the best time for all.

If you're interested in an action- and adventure-packed surfing trip, you'll want to plan your visit for a time with choppier waters and bigger waves. The May-to-October wet season is best for this, but February through April can also see good swells if you'd rather travel without the risk of rain. For snorkeling and kayaking, the opposite rules apply. The best time for these slower activities is December and January, when waters are calm.

Diving, though, is the true king of Maldivian water sports. The archipelago is famous for its hundreds of dive sites, from colorful coral reefs to offshore shipwrecks. Whether you want to try a beginner-friendly spot like the UNESCO-recognized Baa Atoll or a more advanced environment like the shark-filled Fuvahmulah Atoll, you'll want to schedule your trip for a time with good underwater visibility to make the most of the country's world-renowned diving . For the best conditions, try visiting between January and April.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Bioluminescence

You can also see bioluminescent plankton while in the Maldives. These naturally glowing organisms make nighttime on the islands particularly magical when they light up the archipelago's beautiful beaches . Bioluminescence is typically most common during the rainy season, since that's when the most plankton are around — but this phenomenon is more tied to environmental factors like water temperature and salinity than to a particular time of year. (In 2022, for instance, holiday visitors got a special treat when the islands lit up with plankton around Christmas and New Year's.) For the best views of bioluminescence, aim not for a time but for a place: Vaadhoo Island, home to the world-famous "glowing beach."

Worst Times to Visit the Maldives

Some visitors attest that August is the worst time to visit since it's smack-dab in the middle of the wet season. However, October is generally the rainiest month, so avoiding either of these times might be best for your trip. While those little bungalows can be luxurious, it would probably put a damper on your island vacation if you never got to leave the room.

If you're on a budget, though, the popular dry season may be the worst time for you to visit. While a trip to the Maldives is almost always pricey, costs are highest in the peak months of November to April — making the rest of the year a better bet if you're in search of good deals.

Weather in the Maldives in October

The Maldives has a tropical climate year-round, with October being no exception.

The average temperature during this time of the year is 27°C (80°F), and temperatures rarely go below 21°C (70°F). October also marks the beginning of the dry season in the Maldives, which lasts until April.

During this period, there is very little rainfall compared to other months of the year.

This makes it an ideal time to visit as visitors can enjoy sunny days and clear skies without much rain or humidity.

October is also characterized by strong winds coming from South West direction across most of its atolls; these winds are known locally as ‘squalls’ and can cause rough seas around some parts of the archipelago.

Although squalls occur throughout most parts of October, they become less frequent towards its end as wind speeds start to decrease significantly.

The waters surrounding the islands remain warm throughout October; sea temperatures range from 28–30 °C (82–86 °F).

For those looking for an underwater experience, snorkeling and diving activities are available due to good visibility often found in this month – around 20m (60ft) on average – allowing for excellent views into coral reefs and marine life that inhabit them.

Don’t Forget These Essentials When You Head to the Maldives This Fall

When it comes to packing for a trip, preparation is key.

Before heading off to the Maldives this fall, be sure to make a list of all the essentials that you will need and begin collecting them in advance.

In addition to clothing, you will also want to bring some essential items for the beach.

A sun hat and sunglasses are a must-have to protect your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun.

You should also consider bringing along a lightweight jacket just in case there are any unexpected cooler days during your trip.

Don’t forget about footwear either!

Flip flops or sandals are perfect for walking around near water but if you plan on doing more active activities such as snorkeling or swimming, be sure to pack appropriate shoes with good grip and support so you don’t slip when out at sea.

Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen since spending time outdoors under direct sunlight can leave skin exposed to harmful UV rays which may result in painful burns.

Choose a product that has an SPF rating of at least 30 and remember to reapply it regularly throughout your stay!

When packing for a trip, technology is an essential item to bring.

A mobile phone with reliable service in the area you’re visiting can be used to contact family and friends, check maps, or book activities.

Make sure that your phone has enough battery life and that you have packed all necessary chargers for when it’s time to refuel.

A camera is another valuable piece of tech equipment that will come in handy during your travels as it allows you to capture moments that could otherwise easily be forgotten.

Additionally, if you plan on taking photos underwater while snorkeling or swimming, consider investing in a waterproof case so that no moisture gets inside the device.

In conclusion, the Maldives offer something special for both those looking for a relaxing getaway and thrill-seekers alike.

With its crystal clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life – snorkelers and divers can explore an underwater world like no other.

For more exciting experiences above the surface, many boats provide services that allow you to witness stunning sunsets or take part in various water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding.

Accommodation is available in a variety of places ranging from luxury resorts with all-inclusive packages tailored towards relaxation to budget-friendly options as well!

When it comes to getting around during October, there are several transportation options depending on your needs – including taxis, car hire services, and public ferries between islands.

Exploring local markets offers insight into everyday island lifestyle while attending cultural events allows visitors to immerse themselves in authentic traditions still practiced today!

Don’t forget to check out some of the tourist attractions too – whether it’s parasailing or exploring ancient sites – this archipelago has plenty of activities that will leave lasting memories long after your trip ends!

Money Saving Tips To Visit Maldives

Here are five super simple and effective strategies to trim your expenses on a holiday in Maldives in October:

1. To get to the best diving spots, you have to take a boat out. That is why it doesn’t matter that much which resort you crash at. Pick a stay that offers complimentary WiFi and water activities like canoeing, snorkeling, or stand-up paddling. 3. Traveling by a seaplane or a 20-minute speed boat ride will easily set you back by INR 28,000. Opt for public ferries instead that take you across atolls for as cheap as INR 70. 4. Buy a round trip ticket from budget flights like TigerAir. 5. Eat like a local at cafes and tea houses instead of opting for expensive exotic meals.

How To Get Around Maldives In October

Check with the guesthouse or the travel agency you’ve booked if they can make any arrangements.

Underwater visibility also begins to improve in December, and it’s a great time to enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving.

Weather in December: Plenty of sun with occasional showers. Temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

Top activities: Special festive celebrations, water sports, and exploring the vibrant underwater world.

A caveat to the best time to visit the Maldives

When you’re weighing up the best time to visit the Maldives, it’s important to remember that all weather data is based on past conditions, and it’s impossible to predict the future. So while the wet season months of May to November typically see more unsettled weather with higher rainfall, you could have back-to-back days of sunshine. Equally, you could experience grey skies and showers in the dry season – there’s no way to know for sure what will happen.

Bear in mind that the Maldives is a long, thin chain of islands spanning more than 500 miles from north to south. Just as you’d expect different cities to have different weather, the same is true from one atoll to another and even neighbouring islands!

Finally, don’t forget that weather averages usually take account of the whole country and that regional variations, for example, higher rainfall in the southern atolls, may slightly skew the overall picture. Use the weather data as a guide, but don’t rely on it in absolute terms.

Maldives in October – Everything You Need to Know

Social share:.

Visit Maldives in October

The postcard-worthy islands that make up this archipelagic state are popular year-round, and each season brings its unique charm. Considering an October visit? We’ve highlighted all you need to know about travelling to these paradise islands during this time of year, from what to expect from the weather to popular places to stay and the best things to see and do.

So, let’s dive right in…

Is October a good time to go to the Maldives?

Visit Maldives in October

October is definitely a good time to visit the Maldives, particularly if you’re planning a tropical island escape on a budget. Since it marks the last month of the monsoon season, it isn’t a hugely popular time to visit the region, however, the resorts are typically less crowded and prices for flights and accommodation can be more affordable compared to peak dry season. Meaning you can spend those extra pennies on exciting activities and experiences while you’re here.

Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts can expect slightly reduced water visibility, but the abundance of marine life is a major draw – this month provides the best opportunity for sighting manta rays and whale sharks.

What to expect from the weather in the Maldives in October 2024

Weather in Maldives in October

When it comes to Maldives weather October serves up light rainfall, usually in the form of short, intense showers, followed by beautiful sunshine – roughly 12 hours of it per day, in fact! Visitors can expect high temperatures averaging between 27°C and 30°C, warm sea temperatures of 28°C, and light winds. As always, weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to check the forecast closer to your travel dates.

What to wear for the weather in the Maldives in October 2024

Maldives in late October experiences a warm tropical climate made up of hot days and balmy evenings, so your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable fabrics. Aside from your swimsuit (of course), daywear could include items such as shorts, t-shirts and floaty dresses made from cool fabrics such as cotton or linen.

The Maldives temperature in October doesn’t drop much in the evenings and casual attire will be acceptable for most dining venues – particularly if you’re indulging in a bite on the sand! Please note that some upscale restaurants may require more formal wear.

It’s important to protect yourself from the sun and so packing a sunhat, UV-protected sunglasses and high SPF sunscreen is recommended. If you’re planning day trips to local non-resort islands, remember to respect local customs by wearing modest clothing.

Visitor arrivals: is the Maldives crowded during October?

Visitor arrivals in Maldives in October

Falling during the off-peak season, tourists can take advantage of fewer crowds when visiting the Maldives in October compared to visiting in the high season of November to April. This only makes it easier to indulge in the peace and serenity of this paradise island, not to mention an unparalleled level of service and plenty of personalised attention that’s often hard to come by during the busier months.

If you’re looking to treat yourself to a luxury holiday to the Maldives this October, Soneva Fushi and Sun Siyam Iru Veli are outstanding resorts to check into, each with superb service, ultimate pampering, and five-star facilities suitable for all types of guests.

Average cost of a trip to the Maldives in October 2024

The cost of a trip to the Maldives can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, including types of accommodation, your length of stay, whether it’s a family holiday or a romantic couples retreat and if you opt for an all-inclusive package or not.

In October, it is more likely to find slightly cheaper rates, however prices are subject to change and it’s best to check directly with travel agencies, flight operators, and resorts for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Also, be sure to factor in additional budget for activities such as diving, snorkelling, day trips and experiences once you’ve arrived.

Things to do in the Maldives in October

What to do in the Maldives in October

The perks of travelling to the Maldives in October is that you’re likely to have the extra spending money you saved on flights and accommodation to put towards exciting activities and excursions. We’ve highlighted a few of the top things to do in the Maldives in October, so you can start planning your itinerary, today:

Watersports

You’ll be hard pressed to find an aquatic sport you won’t want to try your hand at in the Maldives, whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a novice in the water world. Surfing is a popular pastime, especially since the conditions are optimal in the Northern and Central Atolls from May to October. As the tropical storms become less frequent this month, it’s the perfect time to don your wetsuit and get out on the waves.

Want to delve a little deeper? Scuba diving is one of the most popular things to do in the Maldives to catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring, rainbow-coloured marine life that lives under the surface, and lagoon waters in particular this time of year are crystal-clear, with visibility ranging from 20 to 40 metres. Keep your eyes peeled for Eagle Rays, Barracuda, Manta Rays, and even the super rare Whale Shark!

For a slightly tamer experience, stick to snorkelling on the surface of the water (which doesn’t require a certified PADI License) and lap up views of the tropical fish swimming below.

Sunset Cruise

Ok, technically we’re still on the water but you’re not required to get wet this time! A holiday to the Maldives isn’t complete without witnessing its spectacular golden sunsets that melt elegantly into the twinkling Indian Ocean, and what better place to admire it than from the water itself? Most sunset cruises can be booked via your resort and will set sail between 6pm – 6:30pm around the unspoiled lagoons. Don’t forget your camera, you’ll want to revisit that view forever.

Island Hopping

If you’re staying on a private island in the Maldives (the likelihood is yes) then be sure to book an excursion to visit the nearby local inhabited islands and communities to get a taste of the culture. The local islands won’t be anything like the resorts, granted, but the Maldivian people are equally as warm and welcoming and the level of service at local restaurants and guest houses is exceptional.

A few popular islands to visit include Thoddoo, as one of the biggest islands it is dedicated to the agricultural industry, and also plays host to some of the best watermelons in the Maldives! V Thinadhoo is renowned for having one of the best and cleanest beaches in the Maldives perfect for sun-soaking and snorkelling, plus some of the top hotels and guest houses among local islands. And K Gulhi is another popular haunt among tourists and locals alike, just 30 minutes from Velana International Airport. With ample hotels and homestays plus a local mini market where women sell souvenirs, it’s a lovely spot to wander.

Since the Maldives is a Muslim country, men and women have to cover up their shoulders and above the knees as a sign of respect, therefore your daytrip attire should be taken into consideration. Long skirts or floaty trousers are preferable, allowing you to stay cool in the heat, just be sure not to wear spaghetti straps.

Whether you’re into fishing or not, you’ll want to try it while you’re here. There are a host of fishing exhibitions to experience, which can be booked via your accommodation, that head out onto the Indian Ocean with a handy local guide. Tropical fish are in abundance in the Maldives and you’re sure to get a good birdseye view of them as you venture out further. Tuna is often the most popular catch, yet Giant Trevally is one particular fish anglers hope to catch sight of here and the Maldives is one of the few places in the world where you can catch them year-round! Fingers crossed…

The Maldives’ capital is a far cry from the tranquil atolls that surround it. In fact, with an island population of more than 227,000, it is one of the most densely populated cities on earth. Swap sun, sea, and serenity for the hectic bustling energy of this city and allow yourself to get wrapped up in its pulsating beat. Explore the Malé Fish Market and spot the fresh catch of the day, admire the ornate Old Friday Mosque (which dates back as far as 1656) or visit the National Museum to learn more about the history of the place.

Maldives islands to visit in October 2024

Visit Maldives islands

Wondering where to head first? Each of this archipelago’s islands are as idyllic as the next, and since there are approximately 1,200 of them grouped in a double chain of 27 atolls, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

As we’ve mentioned, Malé is home to several landmarks and attractions, making it a great destination to visit if you want a taste of the local culture. Maafushi and the Ari Atoll are known for their abundant marine life and diving opportunities, with sightings of Whale Sharks and Manta Ray very likely during October. Equally, the Baa Atoll is crowned a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to the Hanifaru Bay, where large numbers of these underwater beauty’s gather.

If you’re pushing the boat out (well, it is the Maldives), there’s a handful of paradise islands to explore housing sensational resorts including the likes of Soneva Jani and The Nautilus Maldives – fit for five-star experiences.

What to eat in the Maldives in October 2024

eat in the Maldives in October 2023

Maldivian cuisine offers a fusion of flavours inspired by neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka and India, so even guests with the most discerning palates can expect to sample something lip-smackingly delicious. You won’t be surprised to learn, since the Maldives is surrounded by water, that the staple cuisine is fresh fish, while coconut is another major ingredient used in many traditional recipes.

Authentic Maldivian cuisine is known as Dhivehi Cuisine and the dishes have a mild spiciness and delicate sweetness – many of which have been carefully crafted and passed down through the generations. A few staple bites you’ll likely see on the menu and should try whilst you’re here include Garudhiya (fish soup), Mas Huni (shredded smoked tuna), Boshi Mashuni (banana flower salad), Gulha (dumplings), and for the sweet tooths, Aluvi Boakibaa (cassava coconut cake) and Saagu Bondibai (sago pudding).

Maldives in October travel tips to remember

Maldives in October travel tips to remember

We’ve rounded up a few things to remember if you’re travelling to the Maldives in October:

Weather conditions: We’ve mentioned that October is the end of the monsoon season, so you can expect some rainfall. However, these showers are typically brief and are often followed by sunshine!

Pack appropriately: Bring light, breathable clothing due to the tropical climate. Don’t forget your raincoat or anorak for when the rain hits, and if you plan on exploring outside of your resort be sure to research the appropriate clothing since this is a Muslim country.

Snorkelling and Diving: October is a fantastic month for underwater activities like snorkelling and diving, as the colourful marine life is abundant. Visibility may be ever so slightly reduced, so do check the weather conditions.

Resort Selection: Choose a resort with ample activities sure to entertain guests of all ages in case of rain. Perhaps consider an iconic Maldives water villa for an unforgettable experience? Let’s face it, you won’t mind a drizzle so much from your private infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean…

Transfers: It’s important to note that seaplanes may not operate in bad weather, so ensure you have flexible travel plans for reaching and departing your resort.

Off-peak benefits: October is a shoulder season in the Maldives, meaning potentially lower prices and less crowded resorts.

The Maldives in October FAQs

Yes, the Maldives typically experiences a warm tropical climate throughout the year, including October. This is towards the end of the wet season, so high humidity and some rain showers can be expected, alongside longer days of sunshine and high temperatures that range from 27°C to 29°C.

This time of year can be somewhat windy due to the transition between the wet season and the dry season, so visitors can expect light to moderate winds and seas throughout this month. However, this doesn’t significantly affect outdoor activities.

If you are an avid surfer or someone who wants to learn surfing, you must try it in the Maldives. There are excellent trainers to help you when you begin and a few certification courses for all the surfers as well.

Surfing in the Maldives

If you are someone who knows swimming and want to dive deep into the waters, then Scuba diving is your pick. Even non-swimmers can do scuba diving but you wouldn’t get the complete experience of diving as you will be restricted to dive after a certain limit.

Snorkelling is most people’s favourite activity. You get to jump into the waters and explore not only the corals but the entire marine ecosystem. Non-swimmers can very well do snorkelling as it is generally swimming very close to the surface. There are several snorkelling resorts in the Maldives.

2. Sunset cruise

Sunsets are always beautiful and the sunset cruise is beautiful beyond comparison in the Maldives. When you visit the Maldives in October, due to the weather, your evenings will be warm and soothing. Even if you are not taking a cruise, just sit by the sea and witness the sun setting down as October is a very favourable time for visting beach in Maldives. It is one of the romantic things to do on a Maldives honeymoon .

Events in the Maldives in October

National day.

Qaumee Dhuvas, the national day of Maldives, is one of the special events in October and a public holiday in the country. It celebrates the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam who is fondly called the national hero of the Maldives. If you are someone who just gets stunned by parades and marches, then this event on the local islands is where you should head to.

Qaumee Dhuvas 2024 – 4th September.

5 Money saving tips if you are visiting the Maldives

  • Since October is not a peak season, you save a pretty good amount on the flight and hotel bookings.
  • When you visit the Male city, eat at local places than expensive restaurants, exploring the culture of Maldives, getting along with the Maldivians and tasting the delicious street food of Maldives.
  • Take an all-inclusive plan. Though a full board plan in Maldives sounds less expensive, you will save a lot of money on water and beverages if you choose all-inclusive. After a tiring day at water sports, trust me, you will need it the most.
  • If your idea is to make the most out of Maldives rather than having a relaxed trip, research many Maldives resorts and choose a resort that has a good number of inclusions in regards to water sports and other activities.
  • Choose to stay a night at a public island for a local experience. Though it is not allowed at the moment, there are chances it might be allowed in October.

Restaurants and cafes to visit while at Maldives

  • Ithaa Undersea Restaurant (Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Resort) seafood and international cuisine.
  • Sea.Fire.Salt.Sky (Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas) seafood, grilled dishes, and international cuisine.
  • Baazaar Market (W Maldives) international cuisine with a variety of food stalls.
  • M6m (Minus Six Meters) (OZEN Reserve Bolifushi) seafood and international cuisine.
  • The Lighthouse Restaurant (Baros Maldives) gourmet cuisine inspired by Mediterranean flavors.
  • Café del Mar Maldives (Crossroads Maldives) tapas, cocktails, and international cuisine.
  • Manta Ray Treehouse Dining (Hurawalhi Island Resort) – specially curated menu with a focus on seafood.
  • Fuego Grill (W Maldives): Grilled dishes, seafood, and beverages.

The Maldives is a destination that has a starring role in many vacationers’ dreams. White sand, crystal clear water, and a remote location make it an exotic playground that many of us have at the top of our bucket lists.

When planning a trip to the Maldives, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, including what resort you’ll stay at, how you’ll get there, how much money you plan on spending, and of course, what time of year you want to visit.

While the Maldives is a year-round destination, there are 2 distinct seasons that offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this guide, we’ll explore the best times to visit the Maldives, both by season and by interest. So, if you’re wondering about the best time to visit the Maldives for snorkeling or the best time to visit the Maldives to save money, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s get to it and start exploring the best (and worst) times to visit the Maldives.

The Maldives is an archipelago made up of over 1,000 islands located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Since it’s situated just north of the equator, the temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year with high temperatures in the mid-80s and low temperatures in the mid- to high 70s.

Maldives location on a map

Of all the islands in the Maldives, only about 200 are inhabited. These islands are separated into 26 atolls — ring-shaped islands or chains of islands — spread out over 500 miles north to south and 80 miles east to west.

The Maldives is the lowest lying country in the world , with not a single island sitting higher than 6 feet above sea level. The capital, Malé, is only 3.2 square miles and is home to over 250,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

Hot Tip: Learn about the best ways to fly and stay in the Maldives with points and miles in our detailed guide!

The Maldives is a bit unique because it doesn’t experience 4 seasons like many places around the world. Instead, it has 2 — a dry season and a wet season.

Let’s take a look at the difference between these 2 seasons, as well as the weather in the Maldives each month. Keep in mind that the islands and atolls are spread out over about 500 miles north to south, so the weather can vary throughout the country.

Wet Season in The Maldives

Maldives in rainy season

The wet ( southwest monsoon) season in the Maldives is from May to October . Each island can see up to 9.5 inches of rain in a single month, making it a less popular time to visit for many tourists. However, just because it’s the wet season doesn’t mean there aren’t any sunny days. The weather during this time period is unpredictable and can include a combination of massive rainstorms with multiple sunny days.

The southern atolls see more yearly rainfall overall than the northern atolls, but storms are less frequent there and it’s less windy and sunnier overall.

Dry Season in The Maldives

Palm tree in the Maldives

The dry (northeast monsoon) season in the Maldives is from November to April . This is generally thought of as the best time to visit. While this is considered the dry season, it can still rain during this time period. November and December can actually see quite a bit of rain, mostly in the form of brief afternoon or evening thunderstorms, so keep that in mind when planning your trip to the Maldives. For the best chance of dry weather, plan your vacation for February or March.

Overwater bungalows in the Maldives

The Maldives in January

January is a peak time to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range between 77 and 84 degrees. The days are mostly sunny with an average rainfall of about 2.95 inches. Prices can be high, especially at the beginning of the month around New Year’s Day.

The Maldives in February

February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives. With less than 2 inches of rain, it’s also the driest month of the year . The temperature ranges from 79 to 84 degrees and the warm waters are crystal clear. February is prime time for romantic getaways, so expect high prices, especially around Valentine’s Day.

The Maldives in March

March is also a popular month to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range from 81 to 86 degrees and rainfall is at a minimum. It’s a great time for snorkeling and scuba diving since the waters are still calm and clear during this time. Prices can still be pretty high during March, especially when Easter falls during the month.

Hot Tip: The Maldives lies just north of the equator, so the sun can be intense. If you plan to spend lots of time outside, be sure to protect your skin with a rash guard and lots of sunscreen.

The Maldives in April

April is a transition month in the Maldives. This time between the dry and wet seasons can see unpredictable weather, including frequent afternoon storms, although there are still plenty of sunny days to be had. Water temperatures are at the highest of the year, averaging 86 degrees, so it’s a great time for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Air temperatures are also at the highest of the year , ranging from 81 to 88 degrees.

The Maldives in May

May marks the beginning of the wet season in the Maldives. This means there will be fewer crowds and lower prices, but also a higher chance of a lot of rain. Water visibility reduces and sea conditions can become a bit rougher. While that’s not great for scuba diving and snorkeling, it’s perfect for surfing. The temperatures in May drop from their April peak but are still warm with averages between 79 and 86 degrees. May can be quite a wet month, averaging over 8 inches of rain.

The Maldives in June

June can be very rainy in the Maldives which often receives almost 7 inches of rain, leading resorts to offer lower prices . This is great if you’re trying to save money, but set your expectations to include the possibility of some massive storms. While it can be wet anywhere in the country in June, the southern islands and atolls tend to be a little drier than the northern ones. Temperatures range from 79 to 84 degrees.

Paddle board in Maldives

The Maldives in July

While July is a rainy month in the Maldives, prices can increase slightly due to summer vacations. Temperatures remain steady between 79 and 84 degrees. July is a great time for surfing in the Maldives .

The Maldives in August

While still part of the wet season, August is a popular time to visit the Maldives due to school vacations. Temperatures are similar to June and July, ranging from 79 to 84 degrees. Rainfall can be a little less in the north than in the south, with the country seeing about 7.5 inches of rain in August.

The Maldives in September

September is the wettest month in the Maldives and the peak of the low season. Rainfall averages about 9.5 inches and downpours can be heavy. While this can be a good time to visit for surfers or those looking for low rates, it’s not ideal if you want to soak up the sun or float in calm waters outside of your overwater bungalow. Temperatures are still warm though, ranging from 77 to 84 degrees.

The Maldives in October

October is another transition month in the Maldives, with the wet season coming to an end and the dry season emerging toward the end of the month. Rainfall averages between 8.5 inches and 9 inches in October. There’s still great surfing during this month and temperatures remain steady between 77 and 84 degrees. Prices should still be relatively low since the weather can be unpredictable .

The Maldives in November

November is the coolest month in the Maldives , although it’s far from cold with temperatures ranging from 75 to 84 degrees. It’s the end of the surf season and the beginning of the peak season in the Maldives. Average rainfall drops below 8 inches but heavy downpours can still be common. Resort prices start to creep back up this month.

The Maldives in December

December is the beginning of peak travel times in the Maldives, although it’s actually one of the wettest months! December can see over 9 inches of rain, but it tends to happen at the beginning of the month. Temperatures remain balmy, fluctuating between 77 and 84 degrees. The Christmas and New Year holidays at the end of the month are popular times to visit the Maldives and therefore prices can be sky high. Some resorts may even have minimum stay requirements if you’re visiting during the holidays.

Bottom Line: The temperature is fairly consistent year-round in the Maldives, so you’ll want to pay attention to the wet and dry seasons when choosing when to plan your trip. The most popular time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April. If you’re trying to save some money, aim to visit during the wet season from May to October, but be prepared for some potentially wet days.

The Best Times To Visit the Maldives for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

Manta Rays in Maldives

The Maldives is a great location for scuba diving and snorkeling. While these are year-round activities, the water tends to be calmer, making the visibility better, from January through April . However, some wildlife, like manta rays and whale sharks, make more frequent appearances during the wet season.

Water temperatures are nice and warm throughout the year, ranging from about 80 to 86 degrees. The warmest water temperatures in the Maldives occur between March and June.

Hot Tip: Even in warm water like you’ll find in the Maldives, it’s always a good idea to wear a wetsuit if you plan to scuba dive. Make sure to check out our guide to the best snorkels, masks, fins, and snorkel sets if you prefer to travel with your own gear.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives To See Bioluminescence

Did you know that bioluminescent plankton can make the nighttime sea glow in the Maldives? This phenomenon occurs when these microorganisms emit a blue light underwater. This beautiful display is actually thought to be a defense mechanism. Whatever it is, count yourself lucky if you get to witness it.

While it’s hard to predict when bioluminescence will be visible in the Maldives, your best chances of seeing it are between June and November when the skies are darkest and there is the largest amount of plankton in the sea. The hotspot to see bioluminescence in the Maldives is the “Sea of Stars” on Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives for Surfing

Surfing in Maldives

The best time for surfing in the Maldives is from February through November . While many tourists want to avoid the wet season from May to October in the Maldives, it’s actually a popular time to visit among surfers since the waves and swells can be bigger during this time.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives for a Honeymoon

If you’re lucky enough to be planning your honeymoon in the Maldives, you’ll want to put some thought into when you’ll be visiting. For the best weather, shoot for a trip between January and April. February and March are the months that tend to be the driest. However, if you are trying to save some money, consider visiting during the wet season from May to October. While you may have some rainy days, resort prices will be cheaper. And relaxing in an overwater bungalow with your new spouse during a tropical rainstorm can be a romantic way to spend the afternoon!

The Cheapest Time To Go to The Maldives

Let’s be clear — it’s never really “cheap” to go to the Maldives. However, you can save a little money by visiting during the wet season from May to October.

According to Google Travel, hotels are the most expensive in December and January, so avoid those months if you’re trying to save money. April through October will have the lowest hotel prices of the year .

Another great way to save money on your trip to the Maldives is to use points and miles for your hotel and flights .

The Maldives is a tropical destination at the center of many travelers’ vacation dreams. It’s exotic, remote, and picture-perfect. However, there are things to consider when planning a trip to the Maldives, like the different seasons and the high prices.

The best time to visit the Maldives depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is. For the best weather, visit during the dry season from November to April. If you want to save some money, aim for the wet season from May to October.

Best Time to Visit the Maldives: Month by Month Breakdown

The Maldives is renowned for its spectacular diving, serene white sand beaches, and paradisiacal island idylls, but knowing the best time to visit Maldives can really affect the experience you’ll have in this unique island nation.

Broadly speaking, the Maldives has two distinct seasons – a wet season and a dry season. The Maldives also has two distinct tourist seasons; peak season coincides with the dry season and low season with the wet season.

Throughout the year, there are other considerations to take into account, such as the manta ray season, the best time for diving, or when you can get the cheapest deals for your honeymoon!

In this article, we take a look at the best time to visit Maldives.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Maldives (Travel Guide)

Table of Contents

Dry Season in the Maldives

Resort island in the Maldives.

The Maldives has an incredibly tropical climate, which means that while there’s a wet and dry season, temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year.

Even in ‘winter,’ temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius.

The dry season is from November to April, and the peak of tourist season will often run from December through to March. Prices are higher in the dry season, and availability is lower, but the weather will be perfect.

If you’re scuba diving, the water is perfectly clear through the dry season.

November in the Maldives

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a luxury liveaboard cruise in the Maldives.

November is the start of dry season, but it can be the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for bargains. The peak tourist season has yet to begin, but there’s little chance of rain, and plenty of deals to draw in the travelers!

You might be able to catch the last whale sharks around the Maldives before they start heading elsewhere in search of food. The manta rays are still in town, too.

Diving coral reefs still isn’t great, because the water has yet to clear up, but it’s definitely much better than previous months.

Resorts we love in the Maldives:

  • Milaidhoo Island Maldives
  • AYADA Maldives
  • Baros Maldives

December in the Maldives

Maldives beach island with umbrellas on it only accessible by a liveabord.

In December, you can expect the tourist season to begin in earnest as the countdown to Christmas holidays begins.

While the Maldives is a Muslim nation, a majority of their visitors are often from Western countries, and they make use of their Christmas holidays to visit.

The weather is lovely in December. The rains are over, and there are bright skies and sunshine almost every day of the week. Take some time off, book into a luxury resort, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Prices are definitely on the high side through December, and you’ll need to book your flights and hotels in advance, as the best resorts can often sell out over the holiday period.

These are our recommended cruise options in for a Maldives trip:

  • Maldives Dhoni Explorer 7 days, Male to Male
  • Maldives Island Hopping 8 days, Hulhumale to Hulhumale

January in the Maldives

Luxury resort in the Maldives.

Prices remain exceptionally high as we enter the New Year; this is not the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for a bargain!

Tourist numbers are high, but the Maldives is never a destination that’s packed. Hotels, islands, and resorts all focus on sustainability, so even in peak season, you’ll never feel too overwhelmed.

This can be a great place to spend the New Year if you’re not on a budget and you’re looking for solitude or a romantic getaway with your partner.

February can often be the driest month of the year, but you won’t have as high a price to pay for your hotels and flights as you would over December and January!

It’s a wonderful time to be here, with warm weather, clear skies, and zero chance of rain. You can enjoy super-clear diving and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean’s calm waters, and there is plenty of marine life around to keep you enthralled!

April in the Maldives

David Stock Jr of the Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog scuba diving in the Maldives.

April is the last month of dry season, and it’s a great time to visit the Maldives. The weather is warm, and the skies are still clear, although you might have the odd rain shower towards the end of April.

Enjoy some excellent diving before the water starts to get murkier when the rains arrive, and explore the best white sand beaches in the Maldives and glorious island living that the islands are so loved for.

Wet Season in the Maldives

Island beach in the Maldives.

The wet season runs from May through to October. This is the low season when it comes to tourist numbers. The Maldives gets hit by monsoon-like weather throughout the wet season, but actual conditions can vary.

You can risk the rain and get a really fantastic deal on luxury accommodations and cheap flights. It’s worth the risk for the savings, in our opinion, as there’s always plenty of time to relax in your luxury hotel!

While Scuba diving isn’t necessarily good for visibility, the vast amounts of plankton and algae in the water attract some pretty incredible creatures.

The wet season is the best time to visit the Maldives if you’re looking to swim with whale sharks or giant manta rays, as they are here to feed!

The best overwater bungalows in the Maldives are found either at the  Park Hyatt Maldives , or the  Four Seasons Maldives .

May in the Maldives

Beach with umbrellas in the Maldives.

May is the start of the rainy season, but the reality is that you’d be pretty unlucky to get caught in a monsoon deluge straight away!

May is more of a transition month; you can still expect to see lots of sunshine and dry weather, mixed in with the odd thunderstorm and rain shower.

The water definitely starts to get choppier, but experienced divers will still have a great time enjoying the dive sites, as the water is still exceptionally clear.

You can start to pick up a few good deals in May, so it’s an excellent time for anyone looking for a cheaper holiday.

Thinadhoo Island is another top island in the Maldives. Top places to stay on Thinadhoo Island:

  • Plumeria Maldives
  • Casa Barabaru
  • Hudhu Raakani Lodge

June in the Maldives

Remote island beach in the Maldives.

In June, the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, but it’s not all rain and monsoons.

The weather is wonderfully warm, but still not too humid; you will have a few days of sunshine and clear skies if you booked a getaway in June.

It’s a good time for a deal as hotels and resorts try to draw in tourists. Even if it does rain, you can simply enjoy the luxury facilities at your resort.

Relax with a massage, enjoy a few cocktails, or make the most of the wind and choppy seas for some action-packed water sports.

The best adults only resorts in the Maldives:

  • Komandoo Maldives Island Resort
  • Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives

July  in the Maldives

Scuba diving with sharks in the Maldives - A Divergent Travelers must do adventure!

In July, the weather gets worse. This isn’t the best time to visit Maldives if it’s clear skies and sparkling sunshine that you’re looking for.

Expect heavy thunderstorms and lots of rain. Scuba diving is challenging because of the rough seas and lack of visibility, but you will be able to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they start to appear to feed on the ever-growing mass of plankton in the waters.

Prices are reasonable in July, and 26th July is Independence Day; you can participate in nation-wide festivities and cultural events!

The best family-friendly resorts in the Maldives:

  • Constance Moofushi Maldives
  • Amari Havodda Maldives
  • Lily Beach Resort and Spa

August in the Maldives

Heart in the sand around a umbrella on a remote beach in the Maldives.

August sees a bit of a respite from the rain and the monsoon, although the weather can still be quite rough.

As it’s the school holidays in many parts of the world, tourist numbers start to pick up in August, so prices can begin to climb, despite this being the rainy season.

Unless you can only travel in August, though, there’s no real benefit to visiting the Maldives right now. You’re better off waiting for the drier weather or scoring a few bargains in earlier months of the wet season.

September  in the Maldives

Remote island beach in the Maldives from a liveabord cruise.

September can be the rainiest month of the year, so it’s not the best time to visit Maldives if you prefer to stay dry!

It can be wet, windy, and monsoony all through the month. Resorts stay open, though, and you can get some great deals. It’s a really good time for surfing in the Maldives, because the waves can be enormous!

If you are just here to relax and unwind, there’s no reason not to visit in September.

Enjoy the facilities at your resort, try some exceptional island-style dining, and enjoy the hot temperatures!

October in the Maldives

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a luxury liveaboard cruise in the Maldives.

The weather continues to get worse; October can be rainier than September. Don’t expect too many dry days, especially at the start of the month.

If you can, aim to arrive towards the end of the month, when the weather starts to dry up quickly as the dry season approaches.

This might be your last chance to see whale sharks and manta rays, as they tend to disappear at the end of October (at least in large numbers). You can also take advantage of the big waves to enjoy the fledgling surf scene in the Maldives.

For many people, October can be a great time to visit to save money, as prices are often at their lowest.

We spent 7 days sailing, scuba diving, and enjoying some of the best beaches in the Maldives on a liveaboard cruise on the Maldives Dhoni Explore.

From sunset cruises to local island visits and desert-island picnics, there are lots of activities that you can arrange once you’ve arrived at your chosen island.

Diving in the Maldives

These idyllic coral islands rank amongst the best dive destinations in the world. When conditions are good, the underwater visibility is at the highest level – sometimes exceeding 50 metres – and the warm water temperatures year-round make diving in the Maldives a pleasure. The North Malé Atoll is home to the Lion’s Head and Wattaru Kandu dive sites, both of which are frequented by reef sharks. Wattaru Kandu is also home to stingrays and garden eels whilst Lankanfinokhu, or Manta Point as it’s known locally, is a great place to see manta rays being cleaned by local colonies of cleaner fish.

In the South Malé Atoll, Hukrueli is another place to see rays and cleaner fish, and Maaya Thila, a protected marine area, is home to white-tip sharks, turtles, zebra morays and the elusive guitar shark. Hanifaru lagoon in the Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays – June to September being the best time as this is during the monsoon season and equinox when the lagoon is filled with plankton.

The Scuba Diver course provides pre-entry level certification in three days and on completion you can then upgrade to an Open Water Diver qualification by taking the additional five day course. Our Ten Dives and Six Consecutive Days diving allow qualified divers to make the most of their time in these beautiful islands. Courses are available at Kurumba Maldives, Dhigali Maldives, Velidhu and Meeru.

Best time to visit Maldives

Temperatures in the Maldives stay at a wonderfully warm 25-30°Cyear-round and only drop a few degrees at night. There’s an average of 8 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature barely falls below 25°C. There are distinct wet (south-west monsoon) and dry (north-east monsoon) seasons; peak season for the Maldives is between December and April when the climate is drier, it’s less windy and the weather is hotter. Most travellers see this as the best time to go, but there are other factors to consider when choosing the time of year to travel here – like when to see specific marine life and when you’ll find the best value offers. Each island in the archipelago has its own microclimate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year.

Maldives Weather

Maldives weather by month.

The Maldives in January The Maldives’ weather in January is hot, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly. It’s a great month to visit the Maldives and booking in advance is advised. There’s also great visibility for diving and snorkelling.

The Maldives in February February is an excellent time to travel to the Maldives. It’s the Maldives’ driest month, with less than 70mm of monthly rainfall, average maximum temperatures of 30°C and around 10 hours of sunshine each day. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent.

The Maldives in March In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Possible short bursts of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent and March also sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives.

The Maldives in April April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season and there are often showers mid-month. It’s also a little more humid. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

The Maldives in May May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of storms and possible whole days of rain. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

The Maldives in June June is another month in the Maldives with a high chance of rainfall. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

The Maldives in July The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is another time to check for great value offers and is particularly good for surfers. Water visibility for diving is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but the big draw underwater is the presence of manta rays and whale sharks. 26July is Independence Day and you may see small parades and public celebrations on resort islands.

The Maldives in August August in the Maldives is hot and humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.

The Maldives in September September is one of the Maldives’ wettest months. It sees average maximum temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but there are great opportunities to spot whale sharks and manta rays feeding on the plankton.

The Maldives in October October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and with possible whole days of rain. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. October is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season and the last month of the year for good sightings of whale sharks and manta rays.

The Maldives in November In November, temperatures in the Maldives are an average maximum of 30°C. The official wet season is finishing and although there are showers, the rain passes quickly.

The Maldives in December The climate for the Maldives in December is largely hot and dry, though mid-month showers are likely. It’s an excellent choice for some winter sun. Christmas and New Year are particularly popular and may include minimum stays.

A note on Ramadam The exact date of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

'Maldives issue with India helping us': Sri Lanka tourism minister on boost in Indian travellers amidst Maldives boycott calls

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Tourism highlighted that shift in travel patterns is evident, with India, once the largest source market for the Maldives in 2023, now ranking sixth behind countries such as China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.

Business Today Desk

  • Updated May 16, 2024, 2:42 PM IST

Sri Lanka surpassed Maldives in tourist arrivals in February. (Reuters)

Sri Lanka's Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, has pointed out the positive impact of calls for Indian travellers to boycott the Maldives on Sri Lanka's travel industry. Fernando expressed that the ongoing situation in the Maldives has inadvertently benefited Sri Lanka's tourism sector, speaking to CNBC on Thursday.

Referencing a social media dispute in January that led to a significant decline in Indian visitors to the Maldives this year, Fernando stated, "The Maldives issue is... helping us."

Highlighting the strong ties between Sri Lanka and India, both in business and tourism, Fernando emphasised the value proposition Sri Lanka offers Indian travellers. He pointed out the diverse attractions in Sri Lanka, including its beaches, casinos, shopping opportunities, and the Ramayana Trail, a series of sites linked to the ancient Hindu epic, Ramayana.

Fernando also acknowledged India's growing influence in Sri Lankan travel sector, predicting that Indian travellers are poised to become the world's fourth-largest spenders by 2030. This trend is seen as a significant boost for Sri Lanka's tourism industry, with Fernando noting the positive impact of India's economic growth on the island nation.

Looking ahead, Fernando expressed optimism about attracting more global investments to Sri Lanka, drawing parallels to the Maldives' renowned water bungalow concept. Plans are underway to introduce adventure activities to cater to younger travellers and initiatives to position Sri Lanka as an entertainment hub by hosting musical events to attract tourists.
