Our Sustainability Journey

In 2005, we began a corporate-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) initiative. This comprehensive, planned approach to improving our environmental performance resulted, in 2006, in certification of all of our Operating Lines and ships in accordance with the ISO14001 standard. Each Line’s EMS outlines our commitment to compliance with applicable environmental legislation and regulations, and lays the groundwork for addressing the immediate and long-term environmental impacts of our cruises on the ocean, the air, and the natural habitat of our destinations. To further support our environmental strategy in 2018, our Environmental Management System was certified at the corporate level vs. at the individual brand level for the first time, confirming our commitment to consistent, best-practice environment management practices across our brands.

In 2008, we expanded our commitment to transparency by deciding to publicly disclose the environmental, social and governance performance of each of our lines, using the internationally recognized Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework, to augment the annual Environmental Management reporting effort that we began in 2005. Since 2009 we are publishing our annual Sustainability Report publically. The publication of our Sustainability Reports enables us to benchmark our collective performance and to identify opportunities for improvement moving forward.

Our sustainability vision includes several important priorities – among them are addressing climate change, improving the quality of our air emissions, protecting the oceans and seas upon which we sail, supporting the communities we visit and providing all employees with a positive work environment and opportunities to build a rewarding career.

In 2015, we announced our 2020 sustainability goals focused on reducing our environmental impacts while enhancing the health, safety and security of our guests and crewmembers and ensuring sustainable business practices across our brands and business partners.

As we continue to define our sustainability strategy and goals for 2030, we are using the United Nations’ 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) as our framework. We know that developing the right sustainability strategy for our organization is essential to our business success and reputation.

CCL

The reporting process helps us to build upon the multi-year momentum of our sustainability activities and to focus energy on our sustainability direction for each Operating Line as well as for the Corporation, as it allows us to:

  • Share best practices and lessons learned among ships and operating companies;
  • Identify and address opportunities for improvement;
  • Develop mechanisms for closing gaps in accountability and data availability; and
  • Set the record straight on how we manage the environmental and other sustainability impacts of our operations.

These reports also help us to focus energy on our sustainability direction for each Operating Line as well as for the Corporation, so that we can continue to build upon the multi-year momentum of our sustainability activities.

News Release

Carnival corporation announces initial 2030 sustainability goals.

MIAMI , June 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --  Carnival Corporation  & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced its initial set of 2030 sustainability goals, as part of the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability and compliance throughout its global operations.

Following the achievement of its 2020 sustainability goals, Carnival Corporation has established new sustainability goals for 2030 and aspirations for 2050, incorporating six key focus areas that specifically align with some of the United Nations'   Sustainable Development Goals . These areas include: climate action; circular economy (waste reduction); sustainable tourism; health and well-being; diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI); and biodiversity and conservation.

Detailed below, Carnival Corporation is announcing several new goals, targets and aspirations for 2030 and beyond for two of its six focus areas that will guide its actions to further strengthen its environmental, social and governance performance. Carnival Corporation's sustainability commitments under the climate action and circular economy focus areas include:

Climate Action:

  • Achieve a 40% reduction in carbon rate per available lower berth day by 2030, relative to a 2008 baseline.
  • Confirmation that the company peaked its absolute carbon emissions in 2011, despite an approximately 20% capacity increase between 2011 and today with an additional 19% capacity increase on order, and a commitment to continue to reduce emissions over time, and identify a pathway to decarbonization.
  • Expand its alternative fuels strategy across its liquefied natural gas (LNG) program and battery, fuel cell and biofuel capabilities.
  • Deliver a 50% reduction in absolute air emissions of particulate matter by 2030 relative to a 2015 baseline, despite an over 10% capacity increase since 2015 and the additional 19% capacity increase on order.
  • Increase fleetwide shore power connection capability to at least 60% of the fleet by 2030.
  • Achieve net carbon neutral operations by 2050.

Circular Economy:

  • Achieve 50% reduction in single-use plastic items by the end of 2021, relative to a 2018 baseline.
  • Achieve 30% per capita food waste reduction by 2022 and 50% by 2030, relative to a 2019 baseline.
  • Increase fleetwide coverage of Advanced Waste Water Treatment Systems to at least 75% by 2030.
  • Aspire to build zero emissions ships by 2050.

Carnival Corporation will detail additional 2030 sustainability goals and 2050 aspirations covering all six of its focus areas in its 2020 Sustainability Report to be issued later this summer.

Arnold Donald , CEO of Carnival Corporation . "The 2030 goals and our aspirations for 2050 are an important next step in our sustainability journey and support our efforts to establish a path to zero emission cruising over time."

Bill Burke , chief maritime officer for Carnival Corporation : "Our new 2030 sustainability goals demonstrate our ongoing commitment to ingraining sustainability in all aspects of our operations across our nine brands, while providing us clear, measurable targets and metrics to improve our performance and overall efficiency across our shoreside and shipboard operations."

The new set of 2030 sustainability targets and 2050 aspirations build on the momentum of the company's performance relative to its 2020 sustainability goals, which were achieved and in some cases surpassed in 2019, a full year ahead of schedule. As the company continues to work toward the broad restart of guest cruise operations, it is maintaining its focus on its environmental, social and governance performance, including continued progress on its sustainability efforts through the pause in guest cruise operations.

As part of its strategic plan for carbon footprint reduction, the company leads the cruise industry's use of LNG to power cruise ships with a total of 11 next-generation cruise ships that will have joined the fleet through 2025, which will represent nearly 20% of its total capacity, including four ships already in operation. The company also pioneered the use of Advanced Air Quality Systems on board its ships and is promoting the use of shore power, enabling ships to use shoreside electric power where available while in port.

In addition, the company has implemented broad initiatives to optimize onboard energy use, and innovative hull designs and coatings to reduce fuel consumption by minimizing frictional drag, along with trialing innovative technologies for generating power on cruise ships, including battery power and fuel cells.

These efforts, along with a series of others underway, support and strengthen Carnival Corporation's long-term commitment to sustainability, responsible operations and protecting the environment, as outlined in its 2030 sustainability goals and 2050 aspirations. Additional information on Carnival Corporation's sustainability efforts is available at www.carnivalsustainability.com .

Carnival on track to achieve 2030 sustainability goals

The 12th annual sustainability report, Sustainable from Ship to Shore , was released 13 July 2022

Carnival on track to achieve 2030 sustainability goals

Carnival Corporation

By Alice Chambers | 14 July 2022

Carnival Corporation has released its 12th annual sustainability report, Sustainable from Ship to Shore , that details the key initiatives and progress made in 2021 towards the cruise line’s 2030 sustainability goals and 2050 aspirations.

The report was developed with Global Reporting Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, and focuses on the six focus areas that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The focus areas include climate action; circular economy; sustainable tourism; good health and well-being; diversity, equity and inclusion; and biodiversity and conservation.

Carnival has committed to reduce its carbon emission intensity by 2030 and aims to achieve net carbon-neutral ship operations by 2050.

Carbon intensity reduction goals now require a 20 per cent improvement from 2019, rather than the previous baseline year of 2008. This new baseline year will help the company to better communicate recent sustainability progress and modernise its disclosures in alignment with developing best practice and reporting standards.

Key findings from the report show that Carnival is adapting to the use of alternative fuels and advanced air quality systems, alongside reducing its production of food waste and single-use plastics. Employee outreach programmes, disaster relief, community relationships and opportunities for further diversity were also prioritised in 2021.

“Thanks to the dedication, support and proactive efforts of our entire global team, ship and shore, we continue to make strong progress in advancing our sustainability programme across our six focus areas,” said Arnold Donald, CEO and chief climate officer for Carnival Corporation. “This effort includes our deep commitment to climate action and sustaining positive momentum toward achieving our carbon reduction goals for 2030, while working to be part of the solution to establish a path to net carbon-neutral cruising over time.”

Plugging in: carnival corporation celebrates shore power launch at portmiami after exceeding industry-leading milestone.

Carnival Cruise Line to lead the charge as first PortMiami shore power connection

World's largest cruise company continues to outpace its fleetwide 2030 shore power target

MIAMI , June 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Shore power has arrived for ships docked at PortMiami, and today, Carnival Conquest represented Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, at a celebratory event announcing it will be the first cruise ship to plug into landside electrical power at the cruise capital of the world.

Through an industry partnership between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company and several cruise lines including Carnival Corporation, PortMiami is now the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard offering shore power connections at five cruise berths.

"This is an important milestone for our hometown and we're proud to support Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and all county and port officials for their amazing partnership in bringing shore power to PortMiami," said Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line. "We continue to implement important initiatives that have kept us ahead of our ambitious goals to reduce emissions, and this new shore power capability will allow our ships to rely on the electrical grid to power our ships while in port."

Carnival Conquest's selection for the inaugural connection at PortMiami comes on the heels of Carnival Corporation surpassing its 2030 shore power goal in 2023, seven years ahead of schedule. The company now leads the industry with 67% of its fleet shore power-capable, meaning it has twice as many ships able to "plug in" than there are ports equipped to provide shore power.

"Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and minimize our environmental footprint," said Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "It's been over 20 years since our company first pioneered shore power for the cruise industry, yet adoption remains limited to just 2% of cruise ports worldwide. We applaud PortMiami for having the vision to recognize shore power as vital to the future of our industry and the planet, and for being at the forefront of their peer group in delivering this capability to cruise ships."

Energy Efficiency and Reduced Fuel Use Shore power is an efficient way for cruise operators to switch off ship engines while in port and "plug in" to use energy from the local electric grid to power onboard systems and equipment. Using shore power can reduce total emissions by up to 98%, depending on the mix of energy sources. Carnival Corporation is committed to connecting to shoreside electricity in port when it is available and operationally feasible, and the company is working closely with ports around the world to prioritize investment in this important capability.

Carnival Corporation's current shore power achievements include:

Two-thirds of the company's global fleet – 64 ships – are equipped with shore power capabilities and are ready to "plug in" where port connections to electric power are available.

Nearly half of its global portfolio of world-class cruise lines boast fleets that are 100%, fully shore power-capable.

An additional three ships will be outfitted with shore power capabilities this year, and a recent agreement with Switzerland -based technology company ABB Group will help install an additional 30 shore power connections onboard Carnival Corporation ships over the next few years.

Shore power is one of the many emission reduction technologies Carnival Corporation utilizes to reduce fuel use as part of its overall decarbonization strategy and pursuit of net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Thanks to the aggressive and ongoing actions taken to date throughout the fleet, Carnival Corporation is producing 10+% less total GHG emissions today than in 2011, despite increasing capacity by roughly 30% in that time.

PortMiami has introduced shore power for docked ships, marking a significant milestone for the cruise industry. Carnival Conquest, representing Carnival Corporation, was the first cruise ship to connect to landside electrical power at the world’s leading cruise port.

Industry Partnership and Implementation

The introduction of shore power at PortMiami is a result of a collaborative effort between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company , and several cruise lines, including Carnival Corporation. PortMiami is now the first major cruise port on the U.S. eastern seaboard to offer shore power connections at five cruise berths.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, expressed pride in supporting Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and county officials in bringing shore power to PortMiami. She emphasized that this new capability aligns with Carnival’s ongoing initiatives to reduce emissions, allowing ships to rely on the electrical grid while docked.

Advancing Shore Power Capabilities

Carnival Conquest’s inaugural shore power connection at PortMiami follows Carnival Corporation’s achievement of surpassing its 2030 shore power goal in 2023, seven years ahead of schedule. The company now leads the industry with 67% of its fleet shore power-capable, double the number of ports equipped to provide this service.

Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc, highlighted the importance of using shoreside electricity to power ships in port as part of the company’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact. Despite pioneering shore power over 20 years ago, only 2% of cruise ports worldwide have adopted this technology.

Benefits of Shore Power

Shore power allows cruise operators to switch off ship engines while docked and use energy from the local electric grid to power onboard systems and equipment. Depending on the energy mix, this can reduce total emissions by up to 98%. Carnival Corporation is committed to using shore power where available and operationally feasible and is working with ports globally to enhance this capability.

Carnival Corporation’s shore power achievements include:

  • Two-thirds of its global fleet, 64 ships, are equipped with shore power capabilities.
  • Nearly half of its cruise lines have 100% shore power-capable fleets.
  • Three additional ships will be equipped with shore power capabilities this year.

A recent agreement with ABB Group will add 30 shore power connections onboard Carnival Corporation ships in the coming years.

Shore power is part of Carnival Corporation’s broader decarbonization strategy , aiming for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company has already reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by over 10% since 2011, despite a 30% increase in capacity.

Carnival Corporation’s commitment to shore power at PortMiami underscores its dedication to sustainability and emission reduction in the cruise industry. For more information on Carnival Corporation’s sustainability initiatives and progress, visit CarnivalSustainability.com.

Carnival (CCL) Expected to Beat Earnings Estimates: Should You Buy?

June 18, 2024 — 10:00 am EDT

Written by Zacks Equity Research for Zacks  ->

Wall Street expects a year-over-year increase in earnings on higher revenues when Carnival (CCL) reports results for the quarter ended May 2024. While this widely-known consensus outlook is important in gauging the company's earnings picture, a powerful factor that could impact its near-term stock price is how the actual results compare to these estimates.

The stock might move higher if these key numbers top expectations in the upcoming earnings report, which is expected to be released on June 25. On the other hand, if they miss, the stock may move lower.

While management's discussion of business conditions on the earnings call will mostly determine the sustainability of the immediate price change and future earnings expectations, it's worth having a handicapping insight into the odds of a positive EPS surprise.

Zacks Consensus Estimate

This cruise operator is expected to post quarterly loss of $0.01 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of +96.8%.

Revenues are expected to be $5.65 billion, up 15.1% from the year-ago quarter.

Estimate Revisions Trend

The consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has remained unchanged over the last 30 days. This is essentially a reflection of how the covering analysts have collectively reassessed their initial estimates over this period.

Investors should keep in mind that an aggregate change may not always reflect the direction of estimate revisions by each of the covering analysts.

Earnings Whisper

Estimate revisions ahead of a company's earnings release offer clues to the business conditions for the period whose results are coming out. Our proprietary surprise prediction model -- the Zacks Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) -- has this insight at its core.

The Zacks Earnings ESP compares the Most Accurate Estimate to the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter; the Most Accurate Estimate is a more recent version of the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate. The idea here is that analysts revising their estimates right before an earnings release have the latest information, which could potentially be more accurate than what they and others contributing to the consensus had predicted earlier.

Thus, a positive or negative Earnings ESP reading theoretically indicates the likely deviation of the actual earnings from the consensus estimate. However, the model's predictive power is significant for positive ESP readings only.

A positive Earnings ESP is a strong predictor of an earnings beat, particularly when combined with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold). Our research shows that stocks with this combination produce a positive surprise nearly 70% of the time , and a solid Zacks Rank actually increases the predictive power of Earnings ESP.

Please note that a negative Earnings ESP reading is not indicative of an earnings miss. Our research shows that it is difficult to predict an earnings beat with any degree of confidence for stocks with negative Earnings ESP readings and/or Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell) or 5 (Strong Sell).

How Have the Numbers Shaped Up for Carnival?

For Carnival, the Most Accurate Estimate is higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate, suggesting that analysts have recently become bullish on the company's earnings prospects. This has resulted in an Earnings ESP of +70.37%.

On the other hand, the stock currently carries a Zacks Rank of #3.

So, this combination indicates that Carnival will most likely beat the consensus EPS estimate.

Does Earnings Surprise History Hold Any Clue?

Analysts often consider to what extent a company has been able to match consensus estimates in the past while calculating their estimates for its future earnings. So, it's worth taking a look at the surprise history for gauging its influence on the upcoming number.

For the last reported quarter, it was expected that Carnival would post a loss of $0.18 per share when it actually produced a loss of $0.14, delivering a surprise of +22.22%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has beaten consensus EPS estimates four times.

Bottom Line

An earnings beat or miss may not be the sole basis for a stock moving higher or lower. Many stocks end up losing ground despite an earnings beat due to other factors that disappoint investors. Similarly, unforeseen catalysts help a number of stocks gain despite an earnings miss.

That said, betting on stocks that are expected to beat earnings expectations does increase the odds of success. This is why it's worth checking a company's Earnings ESP and Zacks Rank ahead of its quarterly release. Make sure to utilize our Earnings ESP Filter to uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they've reported.

Carnival appears a compelling earnings-beat candidate. However, investors should pay attention to other factors too for betting on this stock or staying away from it ahead of its earnings release.
