Entertainment | after tom cruise once denied ‘abandoning’ suri, she seems to get the last word, cruise’s absence from his daughter’s high school graduation last weekend has again sparked questions and criticism about his alleged choice to not have a role in her life.

In a September 2013 deposition for the case, the Hollywood mega-star explained his objections to reports by In Touch that said he had cut ties with a then-7-year-old Suri after Holmes divorced him in 2012. He took issue with the publication claiming that he, a top celebrity member of Scientology, had chosen the church over his daughter “for good.”

“‘Abandoned by Daddy,'” Cruise said angrily in the deposition, referring to the headline of the story. “I mean, come on, that is absolutely disgusting. That is absolutely disgusting.”

But as Queen Elizabeth II once famously said about “recollections,” definitions of “abandonment” also may vary in this situation. In a report this week, The Sun quoted insiders who said that Cruise has not seen his daughter in 11 years.

Allegations of “abandonment” returned last weekend as Cruise let himself be photographed at one of Taylor Swift’s sold-out “Eras Tour” performances at Wembley Stadium in London. The “Top Gun” actor was seen exchanging friendship bracelets, hanging out with NFL star Travis Kelce and dancing to Swift’s music in the VIP seats.

But the night before, Cruise very publicly missed a major milestone in Suri’s life: her graduation from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City.

Cruise’s absence from Suri’s graduation made headlines. And then came more headlines about the 18-year-old dropping her father’s surname for the ceremony. She instead used the name “Siri Noelle.”

Sources told Page Six that the new name was a tribute to her mother. Noelle is Katie Holmes’ middle name, and Holmes has essentially raised Suri as a single parent in New York City since her divorce from Cruise.

It’s not clear whether Suri has gone to court to make the name change official, Page Six said. A source told the publication that Suri dropped her father’s surname because she wants her “own identity” and to “start fresh at college.”

But Suri’s new name choice also could be seen as a rebuke of her famous father — a sign that she has, in her way, abandoned him.

Tony Ortega, a journalist who covers Scientology, called Cruise out this week for “abandonment,” following reports about the actor going to Swift’s concert but not his daughter’s graduation. In an email newsletter for his Underground Bunker newsletter, Ortega said that choices Cruise has made over the past 12 years show that his “abandonment” of his daughter is “even worse than most people realize.”

Cruise and Holmes began dating in 2005, became parents to Suri in the spring of 2006 and married later that year in a ceremony at an Italian castle that was  attended by a number of high-profile Scientologists, including church leader David Miscavige.

Early in the marriage, Holmes was very involved in the church, which is said to exert a cult-like control over its members, Ortega said. But her interest in building her life around Scientology teachings cooled over the next six years, Ortega said. As Holmes was raising Suri, she also was getting to know Cruise’s older children, Isabella and Connor, whose mother is Nicole Kidman. Like Holmes, Kidman was initially very involved in the organization, but the Oscar winner’s interest similarly waned before her split from Cruise in 2001.

Isabella and Connor ended up living with Cruise following the divorce, where they were home-schooled and taught that Kidman was a “suppressive person,” or an SP, someone who is viewed as hostile to Scientology, according to a 2012 investigative story by Vanity Fair.

Holmes would have become aware that Scientology’s indoctrination for Suri would begin after her sixth birthday, Ortega reported. It’s no coincidence that Holmes decided to leave Cruise in 2012, around the time Suri turned six, The Sun also reported.

Cruise admitted he “didn’t expect” Holmes to file for divorce; the divorce proceeded quickly with the ex-spouses reaching a settlement within 11 days. The Sun reported that Cruise was granted sole custody of Suri. Under the terms of the settlement, Cruise also was required to pay $400,000 a year to help with her upbringing. There’s been no reporting that Cruise didn’t fulfill this obligation.

Holmes’ decision to leave the marriage, seek primary custody of Suri and enroll their daughter in private school caused “a massive public relations disaster” for Cruise and for Scientology, according to Ortega and Vanity Fair.

Holmes’ actions “would be automatic grounds for disconnection” from the church and Scientology members “if she were married to any other Scientologist,” Vanity Fair reported. But Cruise was given the option to maintain ties with his daughter, because of his celebrity status within the church, according to Ortega and Variety Fair.

To what extent Cruise maintained a relationship with his daughter became the chief source of contention in the actor’s lawsuit against In Touch and its owner, Bauer Publishing, according to The Hollywood Reporter . In his deposition, Cruise said he never “cut Suri out of my life — whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise.

Cruise acknowledged that he didn’t get to see often since the divorce. He said it was difficult to arrange visits around his film shoots and Holmes’ schedule.

“Certainly what doesn’t change is the love that I have for my daughter, and that I didn’t abandon her emotionally, physically or otherwise,” Cruise said. “And in terms of how I feel about her in terms of the responsibility that I feel towards my child is not—(has) not waned in any way.”

Several weeks after Cruise’s deposition became public, the actor settled his lawsuit with Bauer Publishing in December 2013, the Hollywood Reporter said. Terms of the settlement were not released, but Bauer Publishing released a joint statement with Cruise’s attorneys. The statement said that the publisher “never intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned his daughter, Suri, and regret if anyone drew that inference from anything they published.”

Since then, there have been multiple reports over the years, saying that Cruise doesn’t see his daughter. The Sun’s report suggested that their visits ended around around 2013.

In his newsletter, Ortega took issue with Cruise’s alleged choice to Suri out of his life, even as he apparently enjoyed an exception in Scientology. Ortega said he could ignore rules that apply to most members, who are told to disconnect from family and friends who are non-believers,  Ortega said.

“Even if Scientology had formally declared Katie to be an enemy, Tom Cruise is not a regular Scientology member,” Ortega said. “He’s a celebrity. And in fact, the most important Scientology celebrity of all time. And as a celebrity, Tom would have the ability to ignore those rules and continue to see both Katie and Suri if he wanted to.”

“But that’s not what happened,” Ortega said. “As the years passed after that 2012 split, it became more and more obvious that Tom had completely cut Katie and Suri out of his life.”

Ortega believes that Cruise in fact chose Scientology over his own daughter, even after the actor denied doing so in 2012. Cruise did so because he’s convinced that the late Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard “is the greatest human being who ever lived” and that Hubbard’s “technology” is the only thing that will “save” this planet, Ortega said.

Cruise would therefore want to maintain his relationship with Scientology, even if it meant not having one with his daughter, Ortega said. But the journalist offered another reason that Cruise cut ties with Suri when he didn’t have to.

In Ortega’s view, Cruise is not an admirable person, not as he’s often portrayed in positive press accounts. Ortega actually used more blunt terms to describe Cruise and insisted that the media is “always too afraid” to call him out.

Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri is going by a new last name.

At her graduation Friday from LaGuardia High School in New York City, the 18-year-old opted to give her name as “Suri Noelle” instead of Suri Cruise; she also used that name earlier this year when she appeared in a high school production of the jukebox musical “Head Over Heels.” Noelle is the middle name of her mother, Katie Holmes.

The “Risky Business” actor appears to have skipped Suri’s graduation weekend to hang out instead Saturday with all the celebs at Taylor Swift’s Eras tour in London , where he is filming another “Mission: Impossible” installment.

Holmes and Suri didn’t seem bothered by his absence on graduation day. The mother-daughter duo, perhaps eager to “shake it off,” were seen giggling and taking photos together outside of the graduation venue in celebration of Suri’s achievement.

Suri was born in 2006, just before her parents tied the knot. TomKat stayed together until 2012, when Holmes filed for divorce , but Cruise was plagued by rumors that he had abandoned Suri in the process. In a 2013 defamation lawsuit filed by Cruise against Life & Style and In Touch publisher Bauer Publishing, the “Mission: Impossible” actor said, “The assertion that I ‘abandoned’ Suri after my divorce is patently false. I have in no way cut Suri out of my life — whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise.”

Cruise said he and Suri, who was then 6, “spoke on the phone nearly every day” and that he “regularly asked for and received updates concerning her friends and school life.”

Cruise is also the father of Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, whom he adopted with Nicole Kidman when they were married. Last year, he was photographed in public with Bella and Connor, reportedly for the first time in 15 years.

Inside Tom Cruise's Relationship With His Daughter Suri Now

If you're a fan of going to the movies, odds are you've seen at least one Tom Cruise project. The "Mission: Impossible" star is absurdly famous around the world. As a result, many parts of his life have played out in very public ways on very public stages. 

Cruise is also a dad to three children. He shares his oldest, Isabella and Connor, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman , and his youngest, Suri , with ex-wife Katie Holmes. While it's clear that Cruise has a great relationship with Isabella and Connor, and both children are active members of his Scientology faith (per The U.S. Sun ), it's less clear what kind of relationship — if any — that he has with Suri. In fact, when Holmes and Cruise divorced, he affirmed that Holmes' desire to keep Suri out of the Scientology faith was a factor in their split (per HuffPost ).

The last public photos of Cruise and Suri date all the way back to 2012, when the two were snapped visiting Disneyland (per Yahoo! ). Here's a look into Tom Cruise's relationship with Suri and where it stands today.

Tom Cruise was so excited about Katie's pregnancy that he bought a sonogram machine

Like a lot of expectant parents, Tom Cruise was ecstatic about the impending arrival of his third child, Suri Cruise. In fact, he was so excited about Suri that he reportedly bought his own ultrasound machine so that he could see her every day. Cruise told Barbara Walters about the purchase, which can cost up to $200,000 (per  BBC News ). He seemed to understand that the purchase was on the lavish end, as he reassured people that the machine would be donated to a hospital after Katie Holmes gave birth.

However, not everyone thought the act was a great idea. In fact, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine issued a statement condemning the act, noting that the buy bordered on abusing the equipment. President Lennard Greenbaum, MD, said, in part, that "Tom Cruise's recent purchase of an ultrasound machine for personal use at home is both inappropriate and in violation of FDA rules addressing the sale of medical equipment."

Tom Cruise described his daughter Suri's birth as 'spiritual'

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006 . From all accounts, and especially from Cruise's, Suri's arrival into the world was fairly extraordinary. In fact, only a few days after her birth, Cruise described the experience to "20/20" and still seemed in awe of everything he witnessed (via ABC News ). He said, "It was everything that we wanted it to be. ... It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable."

Plenty of outlets shared news of Suri's birth, as public interest in the newborn was quite high. CBS News  noted that Suri weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and clocked in at 20 inches long. A representative for Cruise and Holmes also shared information about her name, noting that Suri has Hebrew origins and can mean "princess," as well as Persian roots, which could give her name the meaning "red rose." 

Notably, Cruise and Holmes were also able to leave their home to head to the hospital in private, which was quite a feat considering the vast amount of attention they were receiving at the time.

Tom Cruise and Suri Cruise appeared to have a good relationship until 2012

In 2004, a then-engaged Katie Holmes admitted to Seventeen that she had once fantasized about marrying Tom Cruise (per HuffPost ). Fast-forward a few years, and Holmes found herself walking away from the very marriage she once said she wanted.

From all appearances, Tom Cruise and daughter Suri had a solid parent-child relationship up until 2012. That was the year that Katie Holmes filed for divorce in a move that apparently surprised Cruise. While speaking to German TV network ProSieben (via CBS News ), he admitted that he didn't see the divorce coming at all, saying, "I didn't expect it." He added, "Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor."

It seems that after he recovered from the shock of his wife of six years wanting a divorce, he bounced back pretty quickly. InStyle noted that the two were able to work through their divorce pretty quickly, with a settlement being reached after only 11 days. 

He admitted that Katie Holmes left him to 'protect' Suri from Scientology

While Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have been pretty quiet when it comes for the exact hows and whys of their divorce, when pushed, Cruise definitely let something slip: One of big reasons Holmes said she wanted a divorce was reportedly to "protect" their daughter, Suri, from Cruise's religion, Scientology . The admission came out during his deposition during a libel lawsuit he filed against a tabloid. When asked if Holmes felt she had to protect Suri by leaving the relationship, as reported by  HuffPost , he first replied that the question was "offensive" and that "there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion," before saying, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."

On top of that, Cruise also admitted that Suri was no longer a practicing member of the religion (per TMZ ). While HuffPost asserts this means Suri has now been deemed a "suppressive person" in the eyes of the Church of Scientology, there have been no public statements made to that effect. Notably, "suppressive" people are often, if not always, "cut off" from those that are still active members of Scientology.

Tom Cruise was not awarded custody of Suri

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes hammered out the details of their divorce settlement in 11 days (per InStyle ), which is pretty remarkable. Surprisingly to many, Cruise was not awarded custody of the pair's daughter, Suri Cruise, at all, and instead walked away from the discussions with visitation rights only. In fact, Tom Cruise was told he can visit with Suri up to 10 days a month, according to Us Weekly .

Cruise also committed to a fairly hefty sum for child support, and TMZ reported that he pays over $33,000 a month for Suri's care. While that's noting to sniff at, it's a far cry from the sum a judge could have probably ordered him to pay if the divorce had gone to court, especially as his overall net worth is believed to be approximately $600 million (per Celebrity Net Worth ). Cruise is also in charge of covering any necessary expenses Suri might rack up, including medical and dental insurance, schooling, and college, and he also funds extracurricular activities (per TMZ).

It sounds like Tom Cruise doesn't always see Suri in person

Even though the custody agreement struck between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes makes it clear that he can see their daughter, Suri Cruise, for 10 days a month, it seems like he hasn't been able to make that happen. On top of that, a source apparently close to the situation told Us Weekly that this seems to be a deliberate choice that Cruise is making. The source told the publication, "Every person is allowed to see their child if they wanted to. He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist."

Outspoken critic of Scientology Tony Ortega spoke to Us Weekly about what might be going on behind closed doors, explaining that it's possible Holmes signed a document agreeing not to speak badly of the religion in order to get full custody. Ortega added that Holmes only had one objective: to take care of Suri. He said, "She wanted to get away and she wanted to get Suri."

In 2013, Tom Cruise admitted he hadn't seen Suri Cruise for 100 days

Things only got messier for Tom Cruise in the year after his divorce was finalized. In 2013, he admitted that he hadn't seen his youngest child for at least 100 days, explaining that his prolonged absence was due to his filming schedule. 

According to  People , Cruise said in a deposition hearing for her lawsuit again Bauer Publishing that it was "impossible" for him to see Suri during that time, and on top of that, he claimed that the then 7-year-old seemed just fine without him. After sharing that he's "very good" at talking to his daughter on the phone, Cruise added, "I also find that, you know, Suri is a very happy child, and confident, and has a good sense of herself."

He further explained that, though he missed Suri's first day of school, that was because his daughter didn't ask him to be there herself.

How long has it been since he's seen his daughter in person?

While Tom Cruise might have been able to explain why he didn't see Suri Cruise for 100 days, he then reportedly missed out on seeing his daughter in person for over 1,000 days. In 2016, In Touch Weekly reported that Cruise had not seen or exchanged words with Suri in over two and a half years. A source allegedly close to the situation told the publication that the pair had been using video chat and text messaging to stay in touch but that it had slowed down, before adding that Suri no longer really bought her father's explanations for why he was missing. The source said, "He uses his film commitments as an excuse, but the truth is that doesn't hold much weight with Suri anymore."

As in the past, some believe that Cruise's religion is the reason why he keeps missing out on his daughter's life. The same source told In Touch as much, noting, "He's disconnected from Katie, and then de facto from Suri, because of her connection to Katie. He hasn't seen her since she was 7."

A friend reportedly said Tom Cruise never meant to 'be estranged' from Suri

Despite Tom Cruise's reportedly prolonged period of estrangement from Suri, an alleged friend of his has stated that the actor never meant to be so far removed from his daughter. While speaking to Hollywood Life in 2019, the friend explained that, even though Cruise isn't with Suri on important days like her birthday, he's always planning for them. The friend said, "Tom does plan to send Suri a gift and call her on her birthday."

The friend added that Cruise has a lot of love for Suri, and that being this distant from his daughter wasn't something he anticipated when he and Katie Holmes welcomed Suri to the world. The friend explained, "Tom never intended to be estranged from his daughter when he decided to have a family with Katie and looks forward to repairing the relationship one day."

While it's unclear when Cruise will ever reconnect with his daughter, assuming the reports about their estrangement are true, one thing that is certainly true is that the path getting to this point has been long, winding, and, truth be told, quite confusing. Perhaps the two will grow closer when Suri is an adult.

Tom Cruise doesn't live in the same state as Suri

One factor that likely complicates the relationship between Tom Cruise and daughter Suri is that they don't live in the same state — or even the same country. While Suri lives in New York City with her mom, Katie Holmes, Cruise has reportedly been living in London, England, since April 2021 (per In Touch Weekly ).

A source told the publication that the city is a natural fit for Cruise, explaining that he especially enjoys the rainy weather and being able to walk around his new home. He is also reportedly fond of the city because of the anonymity it lends him. The source said, "If he wears a hat and mask, he can slip into bookstores or antique shops and no one knows it's him. He's got family living there, too, which gives him a sense of belonging."

As for Suri, she and her mom moved to New York following the divorce. Holmes admitted to InStyle in 2020 that the city isn't quite as private as she'd like, but she said that the city is just right for her and Suri. She shared, "What I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe."

She also has a beautiful singing voice and lent her vocals to two of her mom's movies, the 2022 romantic drama Alone Together  and Rare Objects.

Speaking of why she loves working with her daughter, Katie told ET :  "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her."

The Dawson's Creek alum also called her only child "very, very talented," and confident too, telling InStyle in 2022: "I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 per cent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it." 

Suri is expected to attend college in the fall but has not publicly revealed where or what she will study.

"She's very, very talented," Holmes gushed of the daughter she shares with ex Tom Cruise . "She said she would do it and she recorded it." 

"I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct, in general," the "First Daughter" star added in the interview . 

Suri is the only daughter of Holmes and Cruise. The couple first met in 2005 and welcomed their baby girl in spring 2006. Later that same year, they tied the knot in Italy. 

However, after five-and-a-half years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in late June 2012 . The "Top Gun: Maverick" star was reportedly caught off guard by the split, but after only 11 days, the couple reached a settlement which gave Holmes primary custody of Suri.

Suri and Holmes now live together in New York City.

The romantic COVID-set film Alone Together marks the second directorial work of Katie Holmes ever since the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival film All We Had . Co-starring Across the Universe ’s Jim Sturgess , Alone Together is when two strangers end up staying in the same Airbnb and have to stay with each other during the COVID-19 lockdown. She was inspired to direct and write Alone Together after a piece she wrote in Vogue about how quarantining during the pandemic was a time to strengthen the bond she had with her own daughter. So, it’s no wonder that she felt her next project wouldn’t be complete without Suri having some type of role in it. 

As for Suri’s father, Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun : Maverick has been soaring high at the box office passing the $1 billion mark . This box office hit has been breaking records for the Mission Impossible star’s career like being a number one box office hit for Cruise for five consecutive years as well as his highest-grossing domestic movie . The action-packed star will also star in another set of sequels from the Mission: Impossible franchise- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Parts One and Two which will hit theaters in the summer of 2023 and 2024. It looks like Tom Cruise’s success can only get better from here.

The talented daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has managed to stay out of the public eye for the majority of her childhood. While Suri has no plans yet to launch a singing career, she does plan on singing yet again in her mother’s next project Rare Objects which is based on the 2016 historical fiction bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro. Other than that, Holmes said that Suri is just your average 16-year-old high school student.

Holmes, 43, directed and stars in the newly released movie Alone Together , and her daughter Suri Cruise, 16, joined her on the big screen.

“I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes said in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment . “So, I asked her [Suri].

“She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it, and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That’s the way I direct in general. It’s like, ‘This is what I think we all want – go do your thing.’”

In the movie, Suri sings a cover of Blue Moon , which plays during the opening credits of the film. Holmes told the outlet this will not be her daughter’s only on-screen singing gig, Fox News reports.

“She actually did sing in Rare Objects , which is the film we did last [autumn],” Holmes said. “Other than that, she’s a 16-year-old kid doing high school.”

Cruise and Holmes were married from 2006 to 2012. Suri is their only child together, and her uber-famous parents opted to keep her out of the public eye for the majority of her childhood.

Holmes directed, wrote and stars in Alone Together – a romantic comedy set during the Covid pandemic. Also appearing opposite her in the film is English actor Jim Sturgess.

The film follows a man and woman fleeing New York City during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020.

They end up booking the same Airbnb and ultimately decide to stay at the upstate property together.

Sturgess praised Holmes’ directing style and shared that she gives actors wide latitude when they are in front of the camera.

Suri Cruise , 15, took another stroll with mom Katie Holmes , 43, in New York City on Sunday, March 20. The mother-daughter duo were seen walking side-by-side in the SoHo neighborhood with big smiles on their faces. Suri, whose dad is  Tom Cruise , looked particularly happy to be out and about with her famous mother. The teenager was visibly laughing as she pulled down her orange face mask to enjoy a sip of her coffee. Katie could similarly be seen grinning underneath her black face mask.

Both Katie and Suri had on simple but stylish outfits for their afternoon outing. The  Batman Begins   actress rocked a cozy purple coat, denim jeans, and a pair of white sneakers. Katie held her black purse on her right shoulder on the walk with her daughter. Suri, meanwhile, looked super cute in a blue jacket, brown and white pants, and a pair of blue sneakers. The teen also sported a small green-and-white patterned purse.

Suri’s frequently seen walking around her home city with her mother. On February 9, they were seen wandering NYC in matching cream cardigans . Suri and Katie are such  New York City fashion staples  with their chic outfits. Suri also tends to be photographed taking her adorable dog for walks.

Katie and Suri have been Big Apple residents ever since the actress got divorced from Tom, 59, in 2012. “That time was intense,” Katie told InStyle in 2020 about her and Suri’s big move. “It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about the city.”

Suri Cruise Makes Her Big-Screen Debut 25 Years After Her Mom Katie Holmes Did

Holmes is one proud mom as her 16-year-old sings "Blue Moon” in Alone Together.

Her long brown hair and gorgeous smile aren’t the only things Katie Holmes and ex Tom Cruise passed down to their lookalike daughter Suri Cruise. The 16-year-old also got a big dose of talent from her famous parents. Recently, Suri officially made her big-screen debut in an appearance in Alone Together , a romantic comedy that Holmes wrote, directed, and starred in. Suri sings “Blue Moon” in the film, which was released 25 years after Holmes made her own feature film debut in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm. It’s a cool full-circle moment and Holmes couldn’t be prouder of her daughter.

“I always want the highest level of talent," Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment on July 26 about her daughter guest starring in Alone Together. “So I asked her! She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'"

Holmes was only a few years older than Suri is now when she appeared in her breakout role as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek , which ran for 6 seasons from 1998-2003. She’s since transitioned to a film career, starring in Batman Begins, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and Miss Meadows among others.

Holmes reflected on her first film in 1997. "That shoot was so exciting for me — it was my first job," she told Yahoo. "When I was there, I didn't really understand what was happening, but in looking at the film many times after, Ang's ability to capture worlds is so incredible. I think that he's such a poet in the way that he shoots a scene, and the dialogue he uses and how that tells the story in a very simple way. It's all about finding the simplest way to get your story across."

Now, Holmes is telling her own stories, and she loves having her daughter work with her. Later this year, Suri’s voice will appear in another one of Holmes’ movies.

"She actually did sing in Rare Objects , which is the film we did last fall," says Holmes of her third feature, a period drama based on the 2016 bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro that will be released on December 31, 2022.

"Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school," Holmes added.

The song is not only Suri’s film debut, but the story behind it has a special meaning. Alone Together was in part inspired the 1987 comedy Baby Boom, which starred Diane Keaton. “Diane met my daughter when she was a year old," Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment of Keaton, who sang “Blue Moon” in the 2014 Rob Reiner film And So It Goes.

Holmes’ creative nature likely influenced Suri’s spark for singing and acting. In December 2021, Holmes told Romper , “I like spending time with people way more than worrying about gifts and things,” about her holiday traditions. “The arts and crafts and the good food… that's what I love doing during the holidays and just making it very creative.”

Introduced to the world on the cover of  Vanity Fair  in 2006, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter Suri has become one of the most well-known celebrity children. 

Following Katie and Tom’s divorce in 2012, the 18-year-old has been largely kept out of the spotlight – making a rare few public appearances alongside her mother in the years that followed. 

Speaking on her commitment to keeping Suri’s life out of the public eye, Katie told  Glamour ,  “What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her.”

“ I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her, but both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry… it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly,” Katie told  Glamour,  adding, “It was very meaningful to me to have her there because she’s my heart.” 

Throughout her teenage years, Suri has reportedly spent most of her time in New York City, with the teenager being more frequently spotted out and about with friends on the way to and from school. 

After attending her high school prom in June 2024, Suri revealed that she would be relocating to Pennsylvania for university, with a school friend posting a video to TikTok showing the 18-year-old wearing a Carnegie Mellon University sweatshirt alongside her classmates.

While she did not share any further information on her course, sources speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of her graduation claimed that Suri plans on studying fashion during her time in college.

While Suri does not have any public social media accounts, her mum Katie has kept fans updated on her daughter’s life through a series of sweet birthday tributes – offering a rare glimpse into their family life. 

“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s such an incredible person,” Katie told  Glamour  ahead of Suri’s 17th birthday. 

Prior to her most recent interview, Katie last commented on parenthood in 2018, telling  Modern Luxury, “I think the most important thing in my life is giving my child the childhood I want her to have. That comes first.”

“When I’m not on set, I’m being a mum. I’m doing mum stuff. When I go to an event, I leave at 10 pm because it’s really important to me to be a mum that is dependable.”

Suri Cruise, the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes , has hinted at her college plans in a TikTok video.

The 18-year-old high school senior revealed that she’ll be heading to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the fall. A TikTok video posted by a fellow high school student, which has since been made private, showed Suri and her classmates at New York City’s LaGuardia High School showing off their college sweaters.

The clip was set to the Hannah Montana song, “I’ll Always Remember You,” as each graduating senior used their hands to reveal their new alma mater. After Suri showed off her red Carnegie Mellon sweatshirt, she then did a little dance for the camera.

“LaG commitment day,” the student captioned the TikTok.

The Mission: Impossible star, 61, and the Dawson’s Creek alum, 45, welcomed their daughter Suri in April 2006. The actors met one year prior and were engaged two months later. Holmes and Cruise tied the knot during an Italian ceremony in November 2006, and Holmes later filed for divorce in June 2012 after five years of marriage.

According to Page Six , their daughter celebrated her 18th birthday in New York City last month while her father was in London.

Holmes has previously opened up about working hard to “protect” Suri because of her childhood in the spotlight. “What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her,” the Batman Begins star told Glamour in April last year. “I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person.”

The mother of one even enlisted her daughter to join her on a recent project. Suri sang “Blue Moon” during the opening credits of Holmes’ 2022 film, Alone Together , and also sang vocals on her 2023 movie, Rare Objects.

“I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her,” Holmes said. “But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people. And it’s this safe, beautiful, creative space.”

She continued: “So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly. That’s how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she’s my heart.”

While much of Suri’s early life was captured by paparazzi, Holmes shared in an essay for Vogue Australia how the mother-daughter duo were able to embrace their newfound private lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Hobbies such as sewing, painting and writing became new hallmarks of satisfaction and having had time at home to just be. To listen. To live for a moment in time without the pressure of results and instead appreciate the natural rhythms of mother and daughter was the most precious gift,” she wrote in 2020.

Holmes also revealed that she and Suri watched Dawson’s Creek together during the height of the pandemic. The actor was just 19 years old when she starred as Joey Potter on the WB series, which ran from 1998 to 2003.

“She has seen Dawson’s Creek , and I think it’s probably weird since she’s a teenager,” Holmes told Variety in March 2023. “I’m not like, ‘You need to watch mommy’s work.’ But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it. Katie Holmes ' daughter is leaving the nest!

The 45-year-old actress opens up about how she's feeling about her 18-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise , whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise , going off to college in an interview with Town & Country published on Tuesday.

"I'm proud of my daughter," Holmes tells the outlet. "Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I'm really proud of her and I'm happy."

Back in the day, Holmes attended Columbia University. She reflects on her own college years when imagining her daughter's future.

"I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that," the Dawson's Creek alum adds.

In May, Suri gave an unintentional hint at where she's attending college when she was spotted wearing a Carnegie Mellon University sweatshirt in a now-unavailable "decision day" TikTok posted by a classmate.

Holmes has kept her family life relatively private over the years and is seemingly continuing to keep Suri's life out of the spotlight, as the outlet noted that's all Holmes will say on the subject. 

"What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her," Holmes explained to Glamour magazine in April 2023. "I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

But when Holmes has made rare comments about Suri, they've been sweet.

"She's the greatest; my heart is her. ... She's definitely my favorite thing about life," Holmes gushed of her daughter in April 2023 to Haute Living New York .

In her new interview, Holmes would not confirm the speculation that Suri is interested in music, fashion and acting. But Suri did sing and do background vocals on Holmes' recent projects, 2022's Alone Together and 2023's Rare Objects .

Tom, 62, who also shares daughter Isabella, 31, and son Connor, 29, with ex Nicole Kidman , has not publicly commented on Suri's college plans. At her high school graduation in June, Suri reportedly ditched her surname, opting to go by "Suri Noelle" instead of "Suri Cruise," with Noelle being the middle name of her mother. Tom was not at the graduation. Instead, he was spotted at Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour  stop in London, England.

TOM Cruise's daughter Suri Cruise has been spotted on the streets of Manhattan looking like a full-blown adult.

The 17-year-old was seen in New York's Soho while walking with some friends.

Suri is the daughter of actors Tom Cruise , 60, and Katie Holmes , 44.

She was wearing a black tank top and a knee-length denim skirt which gave early 2000s vibes.

She paired it with several silver bracelets and a black string choker necklace that had a large silver flower on it.

On her feet were black sneakers and tall white socks that were scrunched down at her ankles.

On April 18, 2006, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise welcomed daughter Suri Cruise into the world. The arrival of the A-list pairing's baby sparked a media frenzy, and that frenzy only went into overdrive when the two decided to wait a few months before releasing any pictures of their child. Suri's parents married later that same year and split in 2012. The dissolution of TomKat's marriage, and the drama that followed, also sparked a media frenzy.

In the wake of Holmes and Tom's divorce, there's been a lot of speculation about the state of Suri's dynamic with her father. Kate Holmes hopes to 'nurture' Suri Cruise's individuality

Katie Holmes has made it clear that there are values she aims to instill in her daughter. Opening up about her parenting style in an interview with InStyle , Holmes said, "My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it. She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, 'OK, I'm going to try the next thing.' She's very focused and a hard worker." 

In the same interview, the mother of one also shared a sweet story about how she always looked for ways to push Cruise to be independent. One year, for example, Holmes had Cruise make her own birthday party supplies instead of, you know, bringing in a high-end party planner who would have all of the themed gear ready to go and could decorate the event to the hilt and then some. "I wanted her to create things instead of having stuff done for her. That way she was always in charge," she said. Holmes also encourages Cruise to pursue her interests and hobbies. As outlets like People  noted at the time, Cruise enrolled in gymnastics when she was a youngster.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's highly publicized split left their daughter, Suri Cruise, in the middle of their custody battle . In the end, Holmes won primary custody of Suri and the two moved to New York together, leaving Tom behind in California. Regarding the custody matters, an unnamed source claimed to  Us Weekly , "Katie was really smart about how she did this. Tom will be allowed to see Suri but there are guidelines for the visits."

When the mother-daughter duo decided to relocate in 2012, there was a lot going on for their family behind the scenes and all over the tabloids. But she quickly established a support system in the Big Apple, presumably making the transition a little less overwhelming. "I love the community in New York," she told People in 2014. "I love talking to my neighbors in the elevator. I like feeling a part of something big."

Naturally, this move garnered quite a bit of attention — even though, as Holmes and Tom said at the time, they weren't in a rush to jump back into the spotlight. "She was born as 'M.I.3 [Mission: Impossible III]' was coming out, and once Tom was finished promoting the film, all we wanted to do was spend time with Suri and our family and friends. We were always going to release a photo ... I really just wanted to enjoy this precious time with my daughter. I knew I'd never get that time back," Holmes recalled in Vanity Fair .

Most teens probably wouldn't be thrilled to sport the same outfit as their mom or dad, but Suri Cruise doesn't seem to mind twinning with Katie Holmes. The mother-daughter duo has been spotted in similar ensembles many times over the years. In 2012, Cruise and Holmes were photographed in matching white skirts and black and white patterned tops. A then-6-year-old Cruise smiled as she held her mother's hand during the outing, so it appears she enjoyed being Holmes' doppelganger for the day.

The pair were photographed in similar outfits during Cruise's teen years as well. Per L'Officiel , Holmes celebrated her 42nd birthday in a floral dress that coordinated with Cruise's attire for the night. In 2021, the Daily Mail shared snaps of the duo donning matching cardigans while out and about in New York. And as Hola! pointed out, Holmes and Cruise were seen running around the city in matching cream-colored sweaters in 2022. No, these outfits are not exactly the same, but they're close enough to suggest the mother and daughter have very similar styles.

The mother-daughter duo bond through volunteer work

Humanitarian work is one of the many bonding activities Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise enjoy together. Holmes opened up about Cruise's interest in giving back in an interview with The Daily Telegraph . "My daughter and I do a lot of volunteer work together. I enjoy volunteering with my daughter and hearing her point of view and listening to her suggestions on how we can help," the "Batman Begins" actor said. "It's important to go and see for myself, and to be part of helping people in any way that I can."

Per Marie Claire , Holmes and Cruise embarked on a trip to a Syrian refugee camp with social change organization Artolution in 2019. The camp, which was located on the Greek island of Lesbos, housed thousands of refugees. The pair assisted women and children at the camp while documenting the process along the way. Holmes took to Instagram to share a photo of her charity work and wrote in the caption, "I love these women who became our friends as we collaborated on many different projects this week. I am so very grateful for this experience. The resilience of these women is so profound and truly inspiring to witness. and I pray for refugees everywhere."

This was also one of the rare occasions where Holmes posted a photo of Cruise on social media . The Instagram photo shared by the movie star mom shows her then-12-year-old daughter interacting with one of the children staying at the camp.

Suri Cruise is interested in the arts like her mom

Like her mother, Suri Cruise seems to have taken an interest in acting and the arts. She's a huge fan of Broadway and often accompanies her mother, Katie Holmes, to shows. It appears that these outings were once full-on family affairs: Per Broadway.com , Tom Cruise was photographed at the Broadway musical "Come Fly Away" with Holmes and Suri by his side.

These days the mom and daughter attend shows by themselves. Per Playbill , they saw "Finding Neverland" in 2016 and even posed for a photo with the cast. And as Marie Claire noted, the duo also saw "Dear Evan Hansen" together in 2017 and took a photo with the play's star, Ben Platt. Does Suri's interest in Broadway mean she could follow in her mother's footsteps and eventually pursue acting? We'll just have to wait and see. For now, she seems to be enjoying her time in the audience and away from the spotlight.

The mother-daughter duo 'saved each other'

Although Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have gone their separate ways, the movie stars were once in love. In 2010, just two years before the couple filed for divorce, Holmes complimented her then-husband on his involvement as a father in an interview with Marie Claire . "Tom's as big at home as he is on the movie screen," she said. "He's so passionate about everything, whatever he's doing. When he's being a dad, he's right there; he's giving it his all. It's inspiring and it's fun. It's an amazing life, but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are." Discussing game night over Scrabble, she continued, "But Tom's really good at it. It's all strategy. I think when I'm back in Toronto, I'm going to bring my dictionary and study."

While Tom and Holmes' relationship was not meant to last, Holmes' bond with daughter Suri Cruise remains unbreakable. A source said in  Us Weekly , "It's no exaggeration to say that Suri and Katie have saved each other. They really are wonderful together." Another tipster told the publication that Holmes has made a point of raising Suri to be someone who not only isn't out of touch, but seems to take the Golden Rule to heart. "She doesn't come across as spoiled or like a celebrity kid at all. She's kind and she always shows gratitude," the source said. 

Is Suri Cruise estranged from Tom Cruise?

Much has been made of Tom Cruise's involvement with Scientology , including but not limited to how it's impacted his relationship with Suri Cruise . Following the divorce, Katie Holmes and Suri left Scientology . And then, as ABC News reported at the time, Tom got into a legal battle with a magazine company over stories that alleged he'd "abandoned" Suri.  The actor said, "'He chose Scientology over Suri for good.' 'Has he chosen Scientology over Suri for good?' 'Abandoned by Daddy.' I mean come on, that is absolutely disgusting. I tolerate a tremendous amount and I'm very privileged to be able to have the life that I have, and I believe that. But there is a line that I draw for myself and — and that's it. And I asked for an apology. I asked for a retraction. They denied it."

When asked if Holmes ended the relationship to get Suri away from the organization, Tom told lawyers, "That was one of the assertions, yes." When a follower of the religion cuts ties with the church, former members have said that they were deemed a "Suppressive Person" and are "disconnected" from those who still belong to the organization, per HuffPost . In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter , a rep for the church denied such a policy is in place. 

In 2016, a source claimed to In Touch that Tom and Suri apparently went 1,000 days without communicating. Getting into the supposed extent of Tom and Suri's limited contact, they claimed, "They used to Skype and text, but that trailed off drastically. He uses his film commitments as an excuse, but the truth is that doesn't hold much weight with Suri anymore." In 2019, a source claimed to In Touch that Tom wanted to repair the relationship.

As for what all of this means for Suri and Tom? We can't say for certain, but by all accounts, their relationship seems estranged at best. Thankfully, she and Katie Holmes have each other.

Born to Hollywood A-listers Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Suri has been in the spotlight since day one. Considering that her mother  is known for setting trends , it's not surprising that Suri has also had a knack for fashion from an early age.

Holmes, who has always been fiercely protective of her daughter, opened up about her experience raising Suri in the public eye. "I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100% herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it," the "Dawson's Creek" actor told InStyle  in 2022. "She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, 'Okay, I'm going to try the next thing.' She's very focused and a hard worker."

With each public appearance, Suri continues to grab attention. Her journey from childhood to adulthood in the spotlight couldn't have been an easy one, but Suri was always graceful and true to herself. 2006-2008: Baby Suri is the spitting image of her stylish mom Katie

As the daughter of at-the-time Hollywood power couple Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, Suri Cruise was no ordinary toddler. In 2006, baby Suri already became the spitting image of her stylish mom, effortlessly rocking designer looks curated by her fashionable parents — and believe it or not, her own inherent fashion sense. "She picks out all of her own clothes and has since she was one and a half," Holmes told  New York Magazine in 2010. "Tom and I went to the Met ball a couple of years ago, and I had this beautiful red gown and these royal-blue shoes that I wasn't planning on wearing, but Suri made me put them on, and so I was like, 'Okay, I trust you,'" Holmes added.

Demonstrating her own passion for fashion, Holmes also admitted that she has been designing clothes for Suri since her birth, saying, "I started making clothes for Suri when she was born, designing dresses, and then having seamstresses sew them because I don't sew very well. As a child, I was always drawing clothes, and I've always loved fabrics, and when Suri was born, I wanted to have certain things be from me and created just by me for her." There's no denying that being exposed to exquisite clothing from such a young age helped Suri explore fashion and find out what she likes earlier than most children do.

2009-2010: Young Suri is all about pops of color

Young Suri Cruise slowly began showcasing her vibrant personality through her love for pops of color in her wardrobe. While she had always been known for her sophisticated and chic outfits, during this time, we began to see her wear more child-like fashion, incorporating playful and colorful outfits into her style. With each outing, Suri effortlessly transitioned from outdated preppy pieces to more vibrant and whimsical looks. 

Her wardrobe, which was estimated to be worth $3 million when she was only three years old, was reportedly hand-picked by Suri herself. "When Suri wants to go shopping, Katie jumps to it and follows her around, buying whatever Suri wants. She helps Suri get changed half a dozen times every day and follows her daughter around like a glorified bag carrier," a source told the Daily Mail in 2009. It's clear that while many parents tend to force their fashion choices on their children, Holmes focused on creating space for Suri's own preferences, allowing the young one to have plenty of power over her style. "I've always wanted Suri to feel empowered [in that way] too. I remember asking her what kind of party she wanted for her fourth or fifth birthday, and she said a fairy party," Holmes told InStyle. "So we went to the fabric store and picked out everything we needed for fairies. I wanted her to create things instead of having stuff done for her. That way, she was always in charge."

2011-2012: Hair accessories are a big part of Suri's looks

At the beginning of the 2010s, Suri Cruise's outfits were often complemented by adorable accessories, ranging from hats to headbands to funky bags. These accessories became an integral part of her signature looks, adding a playful and quirky touch to her ensembles and allowing her to express her playful and age-appropriate style. 

However, this period also marked a significant shift in Suri's life. In June 2012, her mother Katie Holmes filed for divorce from her father Tom Cruise. With Holmes gaining custody over Suri, there was a noticeable change in Suri's wardrobe and overall upbringing. "All that inappropriate dress-up and makeup was down to Tom," a source told Vogue that year. "Katie's keyword now when it comes to Suri is 'normal.' Tom loved to spoil Suri and indulge her, but Katie has other ideas." Holmes was determined to provide Suri with a more grounded and down-to-earth upbringing, which included simplifying her wardrobe and limiting extravagant gifts. "Katie has been returning unsolicited gifts and loans from designers for Suri since she arrived in New York, which is her home base now," the source added. "She's issued instructions to remove Suri from all freebie lists. She's also put the word out in LA to stop any mini-me diva products being sent her way." Despite the changes in her personal life, Suri continued to dazzle with her style choices, giving children's fashion a whole new life. In fact, if anything, this just proved that style isn't about the newest and most expensive designer pieces.

2013-2014: Sophistication is Suri Cruise's middle name

As she turned seven in 2013, it became clear that Suri Cruise had developed a love for sophisticated and fun pieces, often mirroring her mother's chic style. Living in New York City with Katie Holmes, Suri appeared to be a happy child, effortlessly blending joy with style whenever she was photographed out and about. "New York has been very good to both of us," Holmes expressed about their life in NYC (via E! News ). "I love the theater, the galleries in my neighborhood," she added, highlighting their contentment in the bustling city.

Suri Cruise made headlines with her sense of style at a very young age, and one unforgettable look from this particular era was her black and purple striped dress, which she paired with a fun oversized faux fur jacket. While the ensemble itself is timeless and could work for any age, seeing young Suri rock it made the entire look seem even more playful. By now, it was clear that Suri had already become a fashion icon, even though she wasn't even a teen yet.

2015-2016: Suri goes for bright and bold looks

In the mid-2010s, Suri Cruise embraced bright and fun looks even more. She was often spotted rocking bursts of color like hot pink Uggs or a neon bow in her hair. While Suri always had the freedom to wear what she wanted, the older she got, the more fun she had with fashion, and her choices became braver. Even though she was only nine in 2015, it was clear that she already had a signature style at the time — one that revolved heavily around hair accessories. In fact, between 2012 and 2018, one of the most famous children in Hollywood was rarely spotted without a bow, headband, or hat.

Around this time, Katie Holmes remarked on how motherhood changed her, stating, "It changes you completely in such amazing ways, and I think that you become who you were meant to be. Being a parent also is a source of inspiration to just work really hard. You want to set an example — and, you know, [your kids] are what drives you," (via  UPI ).

2017-2018: The tween is channeling New York fashion

Towards the end of the 2010s, Suri Cruise began to channel the stylish New York City teen aesthetic reminiscent of the "Gossip Girl" costume department. As she matured, her interest in fashion seemed to deepen, and she developed a sense of style that was both chic and preppy with a hint of something unexpected. Of course, we can't deny that her style was also very much Katie Holmes-esque; after all, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. In 2017, Holmes spoke openly about the bittersweet experience of watching Suri grow up. "Every day, kids get a little further away from you," the actor told Town & Country . "That's a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking." 

In an interview with Today from 2018, Holmes stressed just how important it was for her for Suri to become a down-to-earth and humble person, even if she does have a Blair Waldorf wardrobe. "We help out the homeless. We do small acts of kindness," she said. "I don't over-gift. I don't inundate my child with a lot of things. We're trying to raise good humans, and some days, we're better at it than others." Holmes has been there for her daughter to help her explore her passions, and fashion surely seems to be one of them. "We just focus on what she's passionate about and how you feel when you achieve your goals. Be true to your sense of opinions," Holmes shared. "I listen to her. It's a daily thing. I try to reward her for her hard work, and not necessarily the results of the hard work."

2019: Suri enters her teens with style

In 2019, Suri Cruise celebrated her 13th birthday, officially entering her teens. Whenever she was spotted out and about with her mother, Suri rocked fun and colorful ensembles that perfectly suited her age. While Suri's style as a toddler was undeniably posh and some might even say a bit too grown-up, she has since developed a preference for more suitable clothes as she has grown older. Pastel colors and funky patterns became a must — and even though she occasionally wore a bit of makeup, her look was always age-appropriate at this time.

Katie Holmes, who was 27 when she had Suri, opened up to Elle about becoming a young mother. "I was happy to become a [mom] in my 20s," she admitted. "It's been nice that our ages fit ... how do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together." As Suri transitioned into her teenage years, her style continued to evolve, perfectly reflecting her personality — and now also her growing independence.

2020-2021: The teen's pandemic style is simple and comfortable

During the pandemic, like many teenagers, Suri Cruise also embraced simple and comfortable fashion. As most people were homebound, Katie Holmes and Suri also wore more relaxed and laid-back styles, and often  rocked stylish joggers . "I think we all want our sweats," Holmes told Glamour in 2023. "I'm an actor, so people say, 'Oh, do you think about what you wear before you go to the grocery store?' No, because it's not my job. You know what I mean?" 

In the early 2020s,  '90s fashion began its major resurgence , and it was delightful to see the teen sporting bolero cardigans and bell-bottom jeans — styles reminiscent of those her mother wore back in the '90s. "... we've gotten through the sort of girlie stage," Holmes shared with InStyle in 2022, and a subtle change in Suri's style was noticeable around this time, as she embraced a more minimalist look. In an interview with Variety  in 2023, Holmes admitted that the pandemic was a particularly special bonding moment for the two, as Suri watched "Daswson's Creek" for the first time. "She has seen 'Dawson's Creek,' and I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager," Holmes admitted. "I'm not like, '"You need to watch mommy's work.'" But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it. It's wild to have a daughter who's almost the same age as I was when I began all this."

2022: Suri Cruise explores classic Gen-Z teen fashion

In 2022, 16-year-old Suri Cruise was frequently spotted in New York City, often seen out and about with her friends during the day. With each passing year, Suri bore a stronger resemblance to Katie Holmes, both in looks and style. Her fashion choices drew inspiration from the latest Gen-Z trends while still maintaining her unique flair. One of the most notable aspects of Suri's style evolution was her ability to effortlessly combine classic pieces with modern twists. She often sported slip-silk midi skirts paired with Converse sneakers, creating a perfect blend of sophistication and casual charm. This mix of delicate and casual fashion echoed her mother's style choices, too, showcasing that a keen eye for style is something she inherited. When Glamour asked Holmes if she noticed that Suri was wearing fashion she used to rock, the actor responded, "I think the '90s style is exactly back. Makes me feel old. We lived through that already! My mom says she should have saved things. I should have saved things."

Alongside her mother Katie Holmes, Suri remained a fixture in New York City, where the two were often spotted thanks to their effortless fashion choices and inherent coolness. On Holmes' 45th birthday, Suri was spotted donning a tailored coat and scarf combo while walking with her mother. 

During this time, Suri's talents extended beyond the realm of fashion, as she showcased her musical abilities in her mother's movie "Alone Together." Holmes directed and starred in the film while Suri recorded a cover of "Blue Moon" for it. "I always want the highest level of talent," the "Batman Begins" actor explained to Yahoo Entertainment  in 2022. "So I asked her! She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing." And as Suri grew and explored her interests, her fashion choices continued to effortlessly blend classic elegance with modern trends.

2024-Present: Suri Cruise is 18, and her style is impeccable

As Suri Cruise celebrated her 18th birthday, she settled into her style even more. "[Katie] really does want her to stay in New York so they can be close to each other," a source revealed to the Daily Mail in 2023. The bond between mother and daughter has been evident since day one, and Holmes uses every opportunity to acknowledge just how proud she is of her daughter. As we eagerly anticipate what the future holds for this once most famous celebrity baby, one thing is for sure: Suri Cruise is a name that won't be forgotten. Celebrity daughters are dropping their famous, and sometime problematic, fathers’ last names. Here’s why it matters

W hether it’s a paper we wrote for grade school or a username we still use on Instagram, we identify ourselves by our last names on the daily. That is, unless we make the pivotal decision to change them.

In recent months, many children of celebrities have stopped using their notable names. On August 19, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter, Shiloh, was granted legal permission to drop her father’s surname , changing her name from “Shiloh Jolie-Pitt” to “Shiloh Jolie.” The legal action came amid the A-listers’ divorce, with Jolie issuing allegations of abuse against her ex in 2022, claiming their breakup occurred after he physically hurt her and two of their six children. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor later denied the claims, calling them “completely untrue.” However, this has led fans to speculate if Shiloh - who’s often photographed publicly with her mother - dropped her last name because of her feelings about her father.

In other circumstances, a celebrity child’s decision to change their name is not related to how close they are to their parents. There’s the apparent move of starting a career without a famous name, such as when Barack and Michelle Obama’s eldest daughter Malia premiered her short film, The Heart , with the stage name Malia Ann .

Speaking to The Independent , Michele Ramsey – a women and gender studies professor at Pennsylvania State University – explained that the now-common tradition of taking our father’s last name dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically to the legal doctrine of coverture. In his 1765 Commentaries , English jurist Sir William Blackstone defined the doctrine as: “By marriage, the husband and wife are one person in law: that is, the very being or legal existence of the woman is suspended during the marriage.”

By this accord, it’s expected that girls are given their father’s last name when they’re born, before deciding if they want to take another man’s name when getting married. However, Ramsey acknowledged certain conditions of coverture no longer exist in America, partly due to the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) – an amendment proposed to the US Constitution in 1923 that grants equal rights for all people, regardless of their sex. Although the ERA isn’t a part of the US Constitution, 38 states have ratified the amendment.

“At birth, women’s identities were subsumed under their fathers, and then once they were married, their identities got subsumed under their husbands,” Ramsey said. “The husband could claim the wages of his wife and her work, and he could claim the wages of his children. This female coverture has slowly eroded through time, as it was only in the 1960s that women could be on juries. Without the Equal Rights Amendment, which levels that playing field automatically, you have to have this sort of slow social culture, and cultural and legal erosion.”

In February, Michelle and Barack Obama’s daughter became the subject of scrutiny online when she chose to go by her first and middle name – Malia Ann – in the debut of her short film at Sundance Film Festival. At the time, critics claimed the switch was an attempt at trying to shield herself from any “nepo baby” criticism , prompting The View host Whoopi Goldberg to hit back at these claims. “She knows she’s an Obama, why do you care? Why do you care what she calls herself?” she said.

Matrimonial and family lawyer Stephanie Lehman , a principal at Offit Kurman’s Family Law and Patrice Group in New York, defended Malia’s decision to go by a stage name. Really, Malia isn’t trying to avoid her famous lineage but instead trying to make a name for herself as a filmmaker, beyond the title of the former US president’s daughter. “I think she wants to stand on her own two feet, and she’s a smart girl becoming a filmmaker,” Lehman said. “She has her own identity and wants to figure it out for herself. I don’t think she just wants to be associated with her last name, so this is a smart move for her.”

The decision to change a last name may have more to do with one’s personal life rather than their professional one. When Shiloh Jolie first petitioned to drop “Pitt,” a source claimed to People that her father was “aware and upset,” alleging that the decision was a reminder to the actor that “he’s lost his children.” Shiloh isn’t the first of Pitt and Jolie’s children to publicly drop the name, with the former couple’s youngest daughter recently going by “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for Broadway’s The Outsiders , in which she served as producer’s assistant. The pair’s eldest daughter, Zahara, also notably introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie” when joining her sorority at Spelman College last year.

Just a few months ago, another celebrity daughter dropped her famous last name at the age of 18: Suri Cruise. After the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes received her diploma at her high school graduation in May – with her mother by her side – Page Six revealed that the teen went by “Suri Noelle” in the school’s program. The moniker is likely a tribute to the Dawson’s Creek star, whose middle name is Noelle.

It appears that Suri also has an estranged relationship with her father, with sources claiming to Page Six last year that he had “no part” in her life. Cruise was notably absent from his daughter’s graduation too. Instead, he was spotted in London that weekend at Wembley Stadium, among the group of star-studded guests attending Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert .

While Pitt is reportedly upset about his daughter’s name change, the decision could say more about the close relationship Shiloh has with her mother. The same could also be the case for Suri, considering the name she used on the graduation program has a special link to Holmes.

“I think that a name is very personal and I can understand how Shiloh’s name change feels like an insult to her father,” the divorce lawyer said. “I’m assuming that for Shiloh, she has a strong relationship with her mom and she identifies more with that name. And maybe it holds some more personal significance for her.”

To change your name at 18 is almost like a coming-of-age moment, signaling the legal right to make such a bold move. The next time we’re given the option to change our name – without requesting to do so ourselves – is when we get married and decide to take our partner’s surname. However, some newlyweds decide to skip the tradition.

In fact, Blake Lively’s late father, Ernie, broke tradition when he took his wife’s name when they were married. While we know the Gossip Girl star as “Lively,” the moniker was actually passed down from her mother, Elaine Lively. Ernie’s last name is “Brown,” which served as the inspiration for Blake’s haircare brand, Blake Brown. When launching her company in New York City on July 31, Blake reflected on her father’s decision to take her mother’s last name.

“My mom had three kids [before marrying Ernie] and he was like: ‘I’m not going to take their name from them, I’m not going to make them take my name. I’ll just take their name.’ That was before I was born,” the actor said, per People .

According to Ramsey, Ernie’s decision to take his wife’s last name shows how fluid our identities are. When we see more people breaking the pattern of women taking a man’s last name, it’s a reminder that we don’t have to stick with the name we grew up with. And while it’s still more common for children to be born with their father’s last name, this shouldn’t necessarily be the common case.

“Ethical language should mirror reality to the best extent possible,” she said. “When a woman gives birth to a child and that child doesn’t have that woman’s name. That child’s last name is from the father’s name. At the minimum, both names should be there. ​​I don’t want to castigate anybody who makes that choice, but it’s just to make a point of just how common it is. But relatively recently, we’ve started chipping away at some of this stuff.”

Ultimately, how we perceive ourselves and what we do with our names is entirely up to us. There’s even the opportunity to change our names multiple times if we please. However, our identities exist beyond that. It’s really our personalities, relationships, and careers that shape us more as individuals than our names.

As for celebrity names, traditions have changed too. Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz took each other’s surnames when they were married in 2022, making both of them “Peltz Beckham.” Their combined last names not only show their future children that their parents are equal partners, but it could also set a trend for how we view names going forward.

“Nicola and Brooklyn’s kids are going to grow up not knowing anything else besides the two last names, so it’s going to be normal to them. And they won’t know it’s not normal until somebody tells them otherwise,” Ramsey added.

And it seems Suri Cruise  already has big plans for her college years with a TikTok from a classmate revealing where she is headed in the fall.

In a video shared on  TikTok May 20  with the caption "LaG commitment day," Suri and her friends celebrated which schools they would headed to in the fall, showing off their college sweaters in the video set to the  Hannah Montana  song "I'll Always Remember You." And the 18-year-old could be seen sporting a red Carnegie Mellon University sweater while making silly faces for the camera and doing a cute dance with her friends.

And while Katie—who split with Tom in 2012—has expressed her desire to keep Suri out of the spotlight she has reflected on their life together. And for the Batman Begins actress, letting Suri have a private life was important because she was "so visible at a young age."

"I really like to protect her," the 45-year-old  told  Glamour  last year . "I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

And it also meant a lot to the  Dawson's Creek  alum to have Suri sing and do background vocals on her recent projects, 2022's  Alone Together  and 2023's  Rare Objects .

"I hope she always does something on my films," Katie said. "I always ask her. But both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people." 

She added, "It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart."

Jennifer Gates , the eldest daughter of Bill Gates and ex-wife Melinda French Gates , graduated from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Following her special day, the Microsoft founder shared a touching message to celebrate her achievement. 

"From pre-K to MD," Bill wrote in a May 15 Instagram post . "I'm so proud to officially call you Dr. Gates."

Une étrange malédiction semble toucher Tom Cruise : les trois femmes à qui il a passé la bague au doigt ont divorcé à exactement 33 ans...

Une coïncidence comme il en existe peu à Hollywood. Tom Cruise a fait tourner de nombreuses têtes depuis le début de sa carrière dans le cinéma et bien des célébrités sont tombées sous son charme. On peut citer Melissa Gilbert , qui incarnait Laura Ingalls dans la série culte La petite maison dans la prairie , Heather Locklear de Dynastie et Melrose Place, ainsi que la chanteuse américaine Cher, qu'il a fréquentée au début des années 80. Très apprécié de ces dames, Tom Cruise a passé la bague au doigt à trois des femmes qu'il a aimées : Nicole Kidman, Mimi Roger et Katie Holmes. Une étrange "malédiction" a toutefois touché ses trois mariages, qui se sont tous terminés en divorce à un moment bien précis : l'année où chacune d'entre elles a fêté ses 33 ans...

🔎 Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise et la "malédiction" des 33 ans

Tom Cruise dit oui à Mimi Rogers le 9 mai 1987. C'est elle qui l'a fait entrer dans l'église de la scientologie : son père, Philip C. Spickler en était en effet l'un des deux fondateurs, aux côtés de Ron Hubbard. Mais leur amour commun pour ce mouvement considéré en France comme une secte, n'a pas suffi à faire tenir leur couple. Ils divorcent en février 1990. Mimi Rogers avait alors 33 ans.

Le beau gosse hollywoodien venait alors tout juste de faire une rencontre d'une importance capitale dans sa vie. Lors du tournage de Jours de tonnerre , un an auparavant, il avait eu le coup de foudre pour celle qui deviendra sa deuxième femme, Nicole Kidman .

🔎 Focus sur Nicole Kidman, sa deuxième femme

A l'époque, la jeune actrice de 22 ans débarquait tout juste de son pays natal, l'Australie, et venait de faire forte impression dans le monde du cinéma grâce à son début remarqué dans le thriller Calme blanc. Le béguin a tout de suite été réciproque : " J’ai vu Tom Cuise au volant d’une Porsche – je crois -, il est sorti de la voiture, il est passé devant moi, et je me suis dit : ‘Ouah !’ J’en suis restée bouche bée", avait expliqué Nicole Kidman au magazine People. Tout a ensuite été très vite. Un mariage d'hiver le 24 décembre 1990, deux enfants (Isabella adoptée en 92 puis Connor en 95)... et un divorce en 2001. La comédienne avait elle aussi 33 ans.

🔎 Katie Holmes a aussi fait les frais de la "malédiction des 33 ans"

Katie Holmes, alias Joey Potter dans la série culte Dawson's Creek , a croisé la route de Tom Cruise en 2005. Entre eux, c'est l'évidence. Comme beaucoup de jeunes femmes de l'époque, la vedette de série télé était éprise du roi de l'action depuis le début de son adolescente.

Elle s'est donc empressée d'accepter quand celui-ci lui a demandé sa main seulement deux mois plus tard. Elle l'épouse le 18 novembre 2006, au château d'Odescalchi, en Italie, selon le rite scientologue. Et si la nouvelle madame Cruise semblait au départ accepter les croyances de son époux (elle aurait d'ailleurs, selon des informations de Vanity Fair , été recrutée par le mouvement pour incarner la parfaite épouse de Tom Cruise), leur relation a vite tourné au vinaigre après la naissance de leur fille Suri. 5 jours avant les 50 ans de l'acteur, le divorce était acté. Katie Holmes avait tout juste 33 ans.

🤔 Malédiction... ou simple coïncidence ?

Depuis l'annonce du divorce de Tom et Katie en 2012, de nombreuses théories ont fleuri sur les réseaux sociaux comme ailleurs. Certains avançaient à l'époque que la première Église de scientologie avait été construite sur le 33e parallèle nord, en Arizona. Pour d'autres, le nombre 33 représentait le chiffre maître de l'archange Michel. Il s'agit plus vraisemblablement d'une drôle de coïncidence .

La "malédiction des 33 ans" n'est en tous les cas pas sans rappeler le cas Leonardo DiCaprio : la star de Titanic ne sortirait, lui, qu'avec des jeunes femmes de moins de 26 ans. Une fois les bougies des 25 ans soufflées , Leo et ses conquêtes se séparent mystérieusement, et personne n'est à l'abri ! Les mannequins Gisele Bündchen , Bar Refaeli, Toni Garrn et Nina Agdal, ou encore les actrices comme Blake Lively , et Camila Morrone en ont toutes fait les frais.
