What Star Trek Titles Are Streaming on Netflix?

Alex Hirlam What's on Netflix Avatar

Star Trek is a name that almost everyone recognizes, it has been around for decades and has inspired millions around the world. It’s had extensive coverage in all manner of media formats but one of the biggest has been its TV and movie presence. Since its inception, there have been 726 individual Star Trek episodes spread out across decades. We’ve also seen 13 feature-length movies too.

We are also lucky enough to welcome a new Netflix Original  Star Trek: Discovery. The first new Star Trek TV show in 16 years will be coming to UK Netflix on the 25th of September (with new episodes releasing every Monday). But for our viewers from the United States, the show will debut on September 2nd on CBS  and made available on their streaming service, CBS All Access.

The new show stars  The Walking Dead ‘s Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham, first officer of  The Discovery . The series is set 10 years before the original ventures of Kirk and Spock of the Enterprise.

The premise for the majority of the shows stays relatively similar. It takes place throughout the Universe onboard an intergalactic ship, For example, the Enterprise or the Voyager. Over the years we have been introduced to many crews, comprised of different actors and actresses. There is much debate on which adaptation of Star Trek is the best, but one thing is for sure. It has developed a cult following and even has a university degree dedicated to learning the language in the show.

As the Star Trek universe has expanded, it has become increasingly more difficult to keep track of all the content streaming on Netflix. But don’t worry, we’re here to cover every Star Trek title currently available, due to release in the future, and has sadly left our Netflix screens.

Star Trek Movies and Shows

Launched on September 8, 1966 — nearly 54 years ago — the NBC-TV series Star Trek was the beginning of a new age of science fiction on television and, eventually, the big screen. The first show to echo the sophistication and vision of sci-fi literature , Star Trek was only a cult hit at the time of its initial run but refused to die even after its cancellation, with the original 79 episodes running for years in syndication.

More than five decades later, Star Trek encompasses eight TV series (a total of 764 episodes and counting) and 13 films, plus countless books, comics, games and more. It’s had its ups and downs, its high points and its misfires, but it remains one of the most beloved and durable franchises in all of pop culture.

Now, thanks to streaming, all those episodes and movies are available to watch any time (we know you diehard Trekkers have the Blu-rays and DVDs, but you don’t have to break those out anymore). Below is a handy guide to where you can stream every iteration of Trek , from The Original Series to the movies to the new Star Trek: Picard . Grab your remote and boldly go…

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969)

The one that started it all, the original Star Trek came along at a time when most screen sci-fi (movies and TV) was still just monster movies or kiddie fare ( Lost in Space , anyone?). Gene Roddenberry ’s vision of an intelligent, allegorical sci-fi series, which used actual genre writers for much of its first two seasons, was groundbreaking in ways that reverberate to this day. And its cast, led by William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock and DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, became iconic.

Star Trek: The Animated Series

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974)

Using the voices of many of the original cast members and even employing writers from the original series, TAS had a genuine chance to extend the original show with the visual freedom animation offered. But the format turned out to be its enemy, as clunky, cheap animation and frequent reuse of shots gave the show a shoddy, amateurish reputation. Some of the stories are quite good, however.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

Set nearly a century after the original series, with Gene Roddenberry mandating that conflict between the crew members be diminished by that point, ST: TNG proved to be enormously popular even with a brand new, unfamiliar crew. It took most of three seasons for the show to find its footing, but Captain Picard (a magnificent Patrick Stewart ) and company went on many captivating and genuinely outstanding adventures of their own.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999)

Many fans consider DS9 the best Trek series ever , and they certainly can make a good argument for it: the first Trek show not set on a starship, but instead on a remote space station, DS9 addressed cultural divides, character conflict, religion and war in a bolder fashion that any Trek entry before it — while also utilizing the kind of serialized storytelling that is now the standard across the medium.

Available in the UK on Netflix UK , Amazon UK* (*purchase only)

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001)

Voyager found members of a Federation starship and the rebel Maquis stranded together 70,000 years from Earth in the Delta Quadrant, facing a 75-year journey home. Headed by Trek ’s first female captain , Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Voyager encountered all kinds of interesting new races as well as old enemies the Borg during the long and often compelling journey home.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005)

The first series to act as a prequel, set a decade before the creation of what would become the United Federation of Planets, Enterprise followed the crew of the first ship to bear that name. Uneven in quality and struggling to find resonant stories, Enterprise was canceled after four seasons and ended an 18-year run for Trek on TV.

Available in the US on Amazon , Netflix , Hulu , CBS All Access

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery (2017- )

Set 10 years prior to TOS , Discovery ’s troubled birth (it went through numerous delays and several showrunners) led to the most polarizing show in the franchise to date. Focusing for once on a central character other than the captain — mutinous anthropologist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who turns out to be the adopted sister of one Mr. Spock — it has often ignored or played fast and loose with Trek continuity while painting Starfleet in a more conspiratorial light. Season 3 will debut in 2020.

Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard (2020- )

Like Discovery before it, Picard has divided Star Trek fans with its depiction of a Federation in decline, marked by bigotry, deception and treachery. But there is no questioning the powerful presence of Patrick Stewart, playing an older, flawed Picard for the first time in 18 years, and the thrill of seeing old friends like Seven of Nine, Will Riker and Deanna Troi. The show has certainly had its moments ; we’ll see if more are to come in the already-announced season 2 .

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

After an aborted attempt at a second TV series ( Star Trek: Phase II ), Paramount Pictures brought Trek to the big screen in a lavish, $40 million epic (the most expensive movie of its time) that reunited the original crew in a 2001 -like encounter with a massive, mysterious space probe. Slow-moving, alternately impressive and shaky visually, ST: TMP nevertheless proved that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise could hold their own on the big screen — and strangely, the film has actually aged better than most.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Still considered the finest Trek movie of all , and rightfully so, The Wrath of Khan focused — like the original show — on character and story instead of visual effects and esoteric concepts. Bringing back a deadly enemy from the first season, the generic superman Khan (Ricardo Montalban), the movie was thrilling, dramatic and, with the death of Spock at the finale, incredibly moving.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Even though the end of Star Trek II strongly hinted at Spock’s return, it wasn’t a given. But Leonard Nimoy did come back for Star Trek III — as director (and yes, as Spock too in the film’s closing minutes) of this somber and often underrated entry . Captain Kirk loses almost everything — his beloved ship, his commission and his newly reconciled son — to save his friend’s life in a poignant story about friendship and loyalty. And there’s a bad-ass villain too, a Klingon captain played to the hilt by Christopher Lloyd.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * YouTube , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Leonard Nimoy’s second outing as director is both a comedy and an environmentally themed adventure — and it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the franchise. This light-hearted romp sent Kirk and the gang back to 20 th century San Francisco to rescue a pair of humpback whales, and the fish-out-of-water (pun intended) antics of the crew provide plenty of laughs and a ton of heart.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Shatner got behind the camera for this turgid, unfunny mess , which regularly rates near the bottom of any Trekker’s list. The old “alien pretending to be God” trope, a long-lost brother we never knew Spock had and the other cast members acting by and large like buffoons make this perhaps the most embarrassing of the Enterprise ’s big screen voyages. There are a few nice moments — there always are — but this nowhere near first on our revisit list.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , *YouTube , * Sky Store (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

The classic Trek cast bounced back from Star Trek V with a final adventure that was also one of their best . A suspenseful, urgent meditation on aging, grievance and the end of the Cold War, Star Trek IV was a remarkable example of how Trek could show us at our finest even while facing down our lingering demons. Plus it ends with both a great space battle and one of the greatest cast send-offs ever (which was emulated by none other than Avengers Endgame ).

Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

What could have been a magnificent passing of the torch from the classic Trek cast to the TNG crew ends up looking and feeling more like a tepid extended TNG episode with weak cameos from Kirk, Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig). Patrick Stewart and his team are all solid, as is villain Malcolm McDowell, and the crashing of the Enterprise is a genuinely gripping setpiece. But the story and motivations are undercooked — as is most of the movie.

Available in the UK on NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

Easily the best of the TNG quartet, First Contact travels back in time to the very start of Earth’s push into space, where the Borg intends to cripple humanity once and for all. The crew of the Enterprise follow them to make sure history isn’t changed, even as Picard confronts his fear and hatred of the Borg . Jonathan Frakes does a nice first-time directing job, balancing the action and character work ably, while Alice Krige steals the show as the sensual Borg Queen.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

Like Generations , the third TNG theatrical outing feels like a mediocre TV segment stretched to feature length; even Frakes’ direction seems uninspired. One difference: with Picard fighting a secret plan (engineered by F. Murray Abraham, above) to uproot the natives of a “fountain of youth” planet, the seeds were planted for later Trek entries that portrayed an increasingly corrupt Federation. Otherwise, this is a forgettable, often cheesy film.

Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

The final big-screen outing for the TNG cast is better than its reputation suggests , as Picard squares off against a renegade Romulan who happens to be his clone. Tom Hardy chews the scenery fabulously as the latter, and the climactic battle between his massive ship and the Enterprise is well handled by director Stuart Baird. There’s also a surprising emotional payoff for Data (Brent Spiner) that ends up being the hook for Star Trek: Picard 18 years later.

Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams does what many thought couldn’t be done — he reboots Star Trek with a fresh, young cast inhabiting the original roles made iconic by Shatner, Nimoy and their crew. The new cast, led by Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, is the best thing about the film, which also uses a clever plot device to position this timeline just slightly to the side of the original one. The reliance on action over ideas is a bit of a letdown, and unfortunately would carry over to the next two movies.

Available in the UK on Netflix , NOW TV , * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

One of the worst Trek films ever , right down there with The Final Frontier . STID insults both fans and casual viewers with a brain-dead script, frantic action and massive contrivances (such as the sudden ability for someone to beam across the galaxy or the screenwriters’ well-worn “magic blood” gimmick). But its most egregious offense is turning into a half-assed remake of The Wrath of Khan that’s as dumb as it is pointless. This is what happens when people tackle Trek with no understanding of it.

Available in the UK on * Amazon UK , * Sky Store , * YouTube (*purchase/rent only)

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Still too reliant on action over depth, and featuring the third revenge-driven storyline in a row, Star Trek Beyond is nevertheless better than its predecessor . It mostly works as a standalone adventure, and once again the Pine/Quinto cast delivers with heart. But even though Beyond does occasionally capture the vibe of classic Trek , there’s a vague sense of desperation at work — like the franchise knows it’s run out of gas (and crashing the Enterprise for the third time in 13 films doesn’t help).

  • There are now 12 shows and 13 movies in the "Star Trek" franchise.
  • The iconic sci-fi series focuses on the lives of Starfleet members as they explore the universe.
  • Most "Star Trek" titles are available to stream on Paramount Plus ($5/month).

Insider Today

The "Star Trek" franchise continues to boldly go where no man has gone before. From "The Original Series" in 1966 to the spin-offs, sequels, and prequels of today, "Star Trek" has been a pop culture mainstay for more than 50 years.

The franchise focuses on the adventures of various Starfleet crew members as they travel throughout the universe. And beneath the series' fun escapism, "Star Trek" movies and shows have used science fiction to comment on issues like racism, sexism, human rights, and politics. By exploring new worlds in "The Original Series," creator Gene Roddenberry was able to tell allegorical stories with thoughtful themes that relate to our own experiences.

In many ways, "Star Trek" has always highlighted diverse storytelling. In fact, one of the first interracial kisses ever aired on TV was in an episode of "The Original Series." This mix of sci-fi entertainment and social commentary is still present in the latest "Star Trek" installments, most of which air as Paramount Plus originals. "Star Trek: Discovery" introduced multiple queer leads, including the first transgender and non-binary characters in the "Star Trek" universe.

If you're a new fan looking to explore the world of "Star Trek" for the first time, or you're a devoted Trekkie who just wants to watch it all over again, we've compiled a list of every "Star Trek" movie and TV show, along with details on where you can stream them all right now.

Where to watch 'Star Trek' shows

There are 12 "Star Trek" shows in total, including nine live-action series and three animated shows. All of the shows are available on Paramount Plus, and many are also available to buy or rent from video-on-demand (VOD) services. One series, "Deep Space Nine," is also streaming on Netflix.

Where to watch 'Star Trek' movies

The "Star Trek" franchise includes 13 movies from 1979 to 2016. A new movie is also set to begin production in spring 2022. You can currently watch every "Star Trek" film on Paramount Plus. The movies are also available to buy or rent without a subscription through different VOD services, and you can stream a couple for free with ads.

'Star Trek' timeline and eras explained

"Star Trek" movies and TV shows all take place in different time periods that focus on different crews and starships. These time periods are generally categorized by fans and creators into four distinct eras: Pre-TOS, TOS, TNG, and Kelvin

Pre-TOS era

Movies and TV shows set during the Pre-The Original Series (Pre-TOS) era take place at some point before James T. Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise.

A few notable series set during this early time period include "Star Trek: Enterprise," "Star Trek: Discovery," and " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ."

The Original Series (TOS) era of movies and TV shows follows the crew members on the starship USS Enterprise after Kirk (William Shatner) becomes captain. Other notable characters featured during this period include Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Hikaru Sulu (George Takei).

The Original Series era includes the first "Star Trek" TV show from the 1960s, as well as several spin-off movies that feature Captain Kirk and his crew.

The Next Generation (TNG) era is set 100 years after Kirk's adventures during "The Original Series," and includes movies and TV shows about the new crew of the USS Enterprise with Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard.

"Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" are set during this time period as well, but focus on other crews and starships. Captain Picard's story also continues after "The Next Generation" in the Paramount Plus original series "Star Trek: Picard."

Kelvin Timeline

The Kelvin Timeline was introduced in 2009 with the release of director J.J. Abrams' first "Star Trek" movie starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock. This film features the crew from "The Original Series" but takes place in an alternate universe that's separate from the main "Star Trek" timeline.

In this version of events, Kirk still becomes Captain of the USS Enterprise but his path to get there is brand new, which gives the writers freedom to explore different storylines with familiar characters.

The Kelvin Timeline includes "Star Trek" (2009), "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013), and "Star Trek Beyond" (2016). An upcoming fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline is set to begin production in spring 2022.

Ten years after the cancellation of the original Star Trek TV series, the popularity of reruns led to a planned TV revival. Those plans shifted into what became the first-ever Star Trek movie, reuniting the original TV series cast, including William Shatner as Admiral James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy. The starship Enterprise gets a fancy upgrade, and the crew sets out on a new mission to confront a mysterious, all-powerful alien intelligence. Star Trek: The Motion Picture proved the franchise's enduring popularity, now on both the big and small screens.

Still considered by many to be the greatest Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan brings back one of the original TV series' most memorable villains, genetically engineered megalomaniac Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), returned from exile to seek revenge. Khan proves to be a worthy foe for the Enterprise crew, especially Kirk, with whom he shares an intense rivalry. The Wrath of Khan features many of Trek's most iconic lines and moments, and has been held up as the template for Trek movies going forward.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is available for digital purchase ($9.99+) and rental ($2.99+) from Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Following the tragic death of Spock at the end of The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek's creators, including debut director Leonard Nimoy, spent the next movie bringing him back to life. Admiral Kirk and the Enterprise crew go on a quest to reunite Spock's soul---what the Vulcans call "katra"---with his body. Spock's katra has been merged with Dr. McCoy's mind, while his body is located on the planet terraformed by Khan at the end of the previous movie. Spock's crewmates race to revive their friend while also facing off against a crew of hostile Klingons.

Combining Star Trek's sci-fi grandeur with the 1980s trend of fish-out-of-water comedy, The Voyage Home is the most lighthearted Trek movie. Leonard Nimoy returns as director for the story of the Enterprise crew traveling back in time to 1986 San Francisco, to retrieve a humpback whale. The whale, extinct in the Enterprise's time, is needed to respond to a dangerous alien probe. Despite the plot urgency, the movie mostly focuses on the crew's misadventures in 1986, where they are confused by the technology and customs of the past.

Star William Shatner takes over as director and co-writer for an ambitious film that's often considered the low point of Star Trek movies. Shatner's vision has the Enterprise crew tracking an unhinged Vulcan named Sybok, who's revealed to be Spock's never-mentioned half-brother. Sybok commandeers a diplomatic mission so he can reach a mythical planet that he believes is the literal home of God. Pursued by a Klingon warship, the hijacked Enterprise travels to the home of the supposed deity, in a showdown that's more silly than profound.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After the disappointing response to The Final Frontier, The Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer returned to Star Trek for the final movie featuring the full cast of the original TV series. Christopher Plummer plays a Shakespeare-quoting Klingon who attempts to derail peace talks between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets, with the crew of the Enterprise caught in the middle. With an elegiac tone and references to the ongoing Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series, The Undiscovered Country is a wistful send-off for the pioneering Trek cast.

Following the finale of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series, the cast led by Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard made the leap to feature films with this transitional story. Original cast members William Shatner, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan return to pass the torch, and the movie's centerpiece is a time-displaced meeting between Picard and Kirk. They're both trapped in a pocket dimension by Malcolm McDowell's Soran, a villain obsessed with evading death. The movie cements Star Trek's legacy from one generation to the next, launching a new film series.

Star Trek: Generations is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The second movie to feature the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, and the first to give them the sole spotlight, First Contact is often regarded as the best Next Generation movie. It brings back one of the TV series' most popular antagonists, the cybernetic aliens known as the Borg, and also features a time-travel story sending the Enterprise crew back to the era when humans first made contact with alien races. Patrick Stewart gives one of his most commanding performances as Capt. Picard, while Alfre Woodard and James Cromwell add gravitas to the supporting cast.

Star Trek: First Contact is streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The Enterprise crew is drawn into a conflict between two alien factions, the Son'a and the Ba'ku, in the second Star Trek movie directed by Next Generation cast member Jonathan Frakes. Insurrection co-stars F. Murray Abraham as its devious alien villain, who manipulates the Federation into serving his ends. Less action-oriented than First Contact, Insurrection features a romantic subplot for Capt. Picard as well as emotional arcs for various supporting characters. It emphasizes Trek's philosophical side while also delivering major plot twists.

Star Trek: Insurrection is streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The final movie starring the Next Generation cast provides closure for several major characters, including Capt. Picard. He discovers a secret clone of his named Shinzon (Tom Hardy), who leads a dangerous rebellion against the Romulan Empire that also threatens the Federation. Nemesis returns to the action focus of First Contact, giving its primary spotlight to Picard and the android Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner). Nemesis was a box-office failure that put an end to the series of Next Generation movies, although some of its plot elements were later picked up by the TV series Star Trek: Picard.

The new Khan is a terrorist mastermind determined to bring down Starfleet, with only the Enterprise crew standing in his way. J.J. Abrams returns as director and producer, delivering more large-scale action set pieces while also delving into more classic Trek lore, including the first appearance of this timeline's version of the Klingons. Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious movies, takes over as director for the third movie in the reboot series. It's a standalone adventure that finds the Enterprise crew stranded after crash-landing on a hostile planet. They've been forced there by the pirate Krall (Idris Elba), a former Starfleet officer who's been twisted by alien technology and plans to unleash a dangerous biological weapon on the Federation. The fast-paced story features plenty of action, along with character development for the young Enterprise crew members who are still finding their way in Starfleet.

Every Star Trek Movie Ranked (From Worst To Best)

Every star trek tng movie ranked (including picard season 3), 6 star trek lost era questions section 31 movie can answer.

  • Paramount+ is the official streaming home for Star Trek, but not all movies are available due to streaming rights issues.
  • The Star Trek movie timeline spans 13 films, with different casts starring in the movies released between 1978 and 2016.
  • Consider owning the Star Trek movies on physical media to guarantee access amid changing streaming availability and licensing agreements.

Due to the wealth of services on offer, and the vagaries of streaming rights, it can sometimes be hard to know where to watch and stream all the Star Trek movies. Paramount+ is ostensibly the official streaming home for the entire Star Trek timeline , but the collection is incomplete. For example, Star Trek: Prodigy was sold to Netflix, which is where fans will be able to stream seasons 1 and 2 later in 2024 . Because of the differences between who owns the movie and the TV rights to the Star Trek franchise, 10 of the movies aren't currently available to stream on Paramount+.

There have been 13 Star Trek movies in total, released in theaters between 1978 and 2016 . The Star Trek: The Original Series cast starred in six movies between 1978 and 1991. The Star Trek: The Next Generation cast picked up the baton in 1994, starring in four movies that largely failed to recapture the TOS movies' success. By contrast, J.J. Abrams' three movies were the Star Trek movies with the best box office . It's now eight years since a Star Trek movie was released in a movie theater, which means that streaming is the new home of the various big-screen adventures of the starships Enterprise.

There have been thirteen Star Trek movies over the last 40 years, but which is the boldest big-screen adventure to go where no man has gone before?

Star Trek: The Original Series Movies Are Streaming On Max

All six Star Trek: The Original Series movies are currently streaming on Max, transferring from Paramount+ in January 2024 . HBO are also airing the Star Trek movies on their channel, if viewers want to chance upon one of the movie adventures for Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the Enterprise crew. Max's collection of the TOS movies also includes the recent 4K Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , so fans can see the Enterprise's confrontation with original movie villain V'Ger as director Robert Wise intended.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the exploits of the crew of the USS Enterprise. On a five-year mission to explore uncharted space, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) must trust his crew - Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Forest DeKelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) - with his life. Facing previously undiscovered life forms and civilizations and representing humanity among the stars on behalf of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Enterprise regularly comes up against impossible odds and diplomatic dilemmas.

It's unclear how long this arrangement between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery is in place, but a similar temporary licensing deal was struck back in November 2022. The lack of the six original Star Trek movies will be disappointing to Paramount+ subscribers who were sold the service on the promise of it being the home of the franchise. However, it's a sign of the times, as now the streaming bubble has burst, many services have reverted to the licensing agreements that were in place in the early days of streaming.

For UK-based fans, all 13 Star Trek movies, plus the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind are available to stream on Paramount+.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Movies Are Streaming On Max

Completing the collection of the first ten Star Trek movies on Max are the four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies. The TNG movies are part of the same licensing deal between Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery , meaning that HBO viewers and Max subscribers can watch everything from 1994's Star Trek Generations to 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis . While the TNG movies certainly have their flaws, Star Trek: First Contact is a thrilling sci-fi action movie that can be enjoyed all year round.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

As Star Trek: First Contact and Alice Krige's version of the Borg Queen plays a key role in the plot of Star Trek: Picard season 3, it may be frustrating for fans to switch services halfway through a TNG -era marathon. The decision to place the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies on Max felt counterintuitive in light of Picard continuing the TNG -era's story over on Paramount+. However, the first 10 Star Trek movies do come as a set, which is why the TNG and TOS movies were a package deal for Max.

The movies starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation are notorious for their wildly varying quality, with plenty of highs and lows.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Movies Are Streaming On Paramount Plus

Due to the involvement of Star Trek 's current creative director Alex Kurtzman, it's no surprise that all three of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies are available to stream on Paramount+ . Without them, Star Trek 's Kelvin Timeline would be non-existent on Paramount+, which would be a huge oversight. The cast of Star Trek 2009 perfectly embody each member of the legendary crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, making the three J.J. Abrams-produced movies well worth revisiting.

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek rebooted the iconic sci-fi franchise in a totally new timeline. When a Romulan ship travels back in time and alters the past, the lives of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the future crew of the USS Enterprise are drastically changed. In this new timeline, the Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) sets out for revenge on Spock, setting off a chain of events that reshape the entire universe.

The three Star Trek movies are also notable for bringing the story of the Prime Universe's Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to a close. This means that fans could watch Spock's appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episodes 7 and 8, "Unification" and then find out how his Romulan mission progressed by picking up the story in Star Trek (2009). While the J.J. Abrams movies take place in an alternate timeline, there's no denying that their story has its roots in the prime Star Trek timeline, as proved by their prominence on Paramount+.

Where To Watch Future Star Trek Movies

It's hoped that Star Trek 4 will join its predecessors on Paramount+ after a theatrical release. However, the fourth Kelvin Timeline movie is once again undergoing rewrites, with The Flight Attendant 's Steve Yockey on script duty. Meanwhile, a Star Trek origin movie, written by Seth Grahame-Smith and directed by Andor 's Toby Haynes is slated for release in late 2025. Not much more information has been released about the cast or story, but fans are understandably skeptical in light of the many delays to Star Trek 4 . However, the mysterious origin story isn't the only upcoming Star Trek movie in production.

...if it's successful, Section 31 could lead to more streaming exclusive Star Trek movies on Paramount+.

Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 movie wrapped production in March 2024, and will be released exclusively on Paramount+ at a later date. Set in the decades between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: The Next Generation , Section 31 will see Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) rejoin Starfleet's covert intelligence agency for a top secret mission. Very little has been revealed about the movie, beyond the involvement of a younger Captain Rachel Garrett from TNG . However, if it's successful, Section 31 could lead to more streaming exclusive Star Trek movies on Paramount+ .

Michelle Yeoh's upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 could provide answers to several lingering questions about Star Trek's lost era.

Why You Should Own Star Trek Movies On Physical Media

When Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled, the only way to watch the show was to buy the DVDs or Blurays. The only problem with this was that Prodigy wouldn't be released on physical media for another four months after the cancelation announcement. It was a harsh reminder that a streaming subscription isn't ownership, it's access to whatever movies and TV shows are available on services like Paramount+ or Max . Streamers are essentially rental services, subject to corporate whims and licensing agreements between studios and streamers. If content doesn't live up to corporate projections, then the streamer may deign not to renew the license, or delete it altogether.

While the cost of a 4K boxed set of 13 Star Trek movies may be more expensive than a $9.99 monthly payment, it's an investment in the long run.

The only way to guarantee that Paramount+ won't take Star Trek: Insurrection away from you is to buy it and the other, better, 11 movies on physical media. All 13 Star Trek movies are available on DVD, Bluray, and 4K, making them accessible at various price points. While the cost of a 4K boxed set of 13 Star Trek movies may be more expensive than a $9.99 monthly payment, it's an investment in the long run. Chasing the Star Trek movies around the various streaming services from Paramount+ to Max will surely rack up a much larger expense than a one-off purchase of a big boxed set that guarantees you access all year round.

You can buy all 13 Star Trek movies in a variety of formats from Amazon.

How To Watch Every ‘Star Trek’ Movie and TV Show

Where to stream:, ‘star trek iii’ at 40: the story of how (and why) leonard nimoy brought spock back after being killed off in ‘the wrath of khan’, ‘star trek: strange new worlds’ renewed for season 4 at paramount+, bill maher applauds william shatner for controversial ‘star trek’ interracial kiss, patrick stewart was asked to wear a wig at his ‘star trek’ audition — a wig that flew by itself from heathrow to lax.

Since 1966, Star Trek has boldy gone where no man had gone before, and to this day, that mission continues.

What started as one three-season TV series 57 years ago has morphed into over 10 shows and 13 movies, which explore, in addition to the original series’ timeline, an alternate one that serves as a soft reboot on the franchise as a whole.

The legacy of Star Trek begins with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy , who left their mark on pop culture with their portrayals of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, and even today, we’re still seeing iconic actors leave their mark on the franchise — Patrick Stewart returned as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Paramount+ original series Star Trek: Picard after 18 years away from the role. The third and final season of Picard began airing on February 16.

Below, we’ve broken down where you can watch every Star Trek movie and TV show, both on streaming services and paid video on-demand platforms, along with details on how the various timelines and which shows and movies fall into them.

Where To Watch Star Trek TV Shows

Unlike the films, all Star Trek TV series including all three animated series exist within the same timeline, even though they weren’t released in timeline order. The Original Series falls just about in the middle of the timeline.

A few of the series, including Enterprise , Discovery , and Strange New Worlds are technically prequels to The Original Series, so they take place before it in the timeline, while The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager all take place in the years following the end of TOS.

Where to watch Star Trek Movies

The final three movies in the Star Trek franchise (the ones starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock) are the only ones that don’t take place in the same timeline as the TV shows and their corresponding movies — the first six movies star The Original Series cast, while the next four take place during Next Gen.

Pine and Quinto’s movies take place in an alternate original series timeline, known as the Kelvin timeline because the inciting incident that changes the timeline is a critical failure aboard the USS Kelvin. While everything else in the Star Trek timeline is co-dependent to a degree, these three movies stand alone as an isolated trilogy.

Star Trek Beyond – Official Trailer

Star Trek Beyond – What to Expect from the Movie?

Helmed by director Justin Lin and overseen by producer J.J. Abrams, Star Trek Beyond stands as the thirteenth installment within the beloved Star Trek franchise. Centering on the charismatic Captain James T. Kirk, brilliantly portrayed by Chris Pine, the film delves into his introspective journey while undertaking Starfleet’s lengthy five-year mission.

However, when the Enterprise falls under the merciless assault of Krall, masterfully depicted by Idris Elba, the crew finds themselves scattered and ensnared. Their arduous quest encompasses reuniting, vanquishing Krall, and safeguarding their cherished home base from impending catastrophe.

Captain Kirk Reflects on His Role

In the film Star Trek Beyond, we witness Captain James T. Kirk deep in contemplation regarding his purpose within Starfleet. He finds himself questioning the motivations that led him to enlist and experiences a sense of monotony in the routine nature of their ongoing five-year exploratory mission. As the anniversary of his father’s passing approaches, his introspection intensifies.

The Enterprise Sets Course to Nebula

At the present location of the USS Enterprise, Yorktown, an escape pod arrives carrying an extraterrestrial woman who claims her vessel is stranded in an uncharted nebula nearby. The Enterprise embarks on a rescue mission, unknowingly walking into a carefully laid trap.

Krall attacks the Enterprise

Upon reaching the nebula, the Enterprise falls victim to a ruthless attack from a vast swarm of small ships controlled by the merciless Krall. The swarm systematically tears the Enterprise apart, causing the ship to crash on the neighboring planet, Altamid. Krall’s ultimate goal is to acquire an ancient artifact present on the Enterprise, which he plans to weaponize as a bioweapon.

The Crew Scattered and Captured

The surviving crew members find themselves scattered across the planet’s surface, with many falling into Krall’s clutches. Meanwhile, Kirk, Chekov, and Kalara discover the saucer section of the Enterprise, only to unravel Kalara’s treachery before her demise. Concurrently, Scotty encounters Jaylah, a resourceful scavenger residing within the crashed USS Franklin, a long-lost vessel missing for centuries.

Kirk and Team Plan a Rescue

Kirk, Chekov, and Jaylah reunite, pooling their efforts to repair the Franklin in order to mount a daring rescue operation for the rest of the captive crew. In the midst of their endeavors, Spock, injured and accompanied by Bones, receives news of Ambassador Spock’s (his alternate reality older self) passing.

Kirk vs. Krall

As the team successfully liberates the crew, they uncover Krall’s true identity as the former Starfleet Captain Balthazar Edison, along with his diabolical plan to annihilate Yorktown using the ancient artifact. In a gripping final showdown, Kirk manages to vanquish Krall and propel him, along with his weapon, into the depths of space, effectively safeguarding Yorktown.

The Crew’s Decision and a New Voyage

Opting to remain the captain of the Enterprise, Kirk declines an offer for a Vice Admiral position. Spock chooses to continue serving in Starfleet while nurturing his relationship with Uhura. With renewed fervor for space exploration and discovery, the crew embarks on their next odyssey, venturing into uncharted cosmic territories.

Our team of experts has tested dozens of free VPNs, and none of them provided us with the premium streaming experience we were looking for. We often faced the Netflix Proxy Error along with disconnections and slow streaming.

Therefore it is unwise to get a free VPN to watch Star Trek on Netflix. We recommend getting ExpressVPN or NordVPN to change your Netflix regions and stream all movies and series of the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek – FAQs

1- what makes star trek so special.

Star Trek holds a special and cherished position among fans worldwide for its array of remarkable qualities. Foremost among these is its imaginative portrayal of a future where humanity unites to explore the vast expanse of the universe, championing inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. The franchise delves into profound and contemplative themes, delving into social dilemmas and moral quandaries that strike a resonant chord with viewers.

Moreover, Star Trek’s indelible characters, such as the captivating Captain Kirk and the logical Spock, have transcended the screen to become enduring symbols in popular culture. Its enduring legacy lies in its ability to ignite hope, foster boundless creativity, and nurture a shared sense of solidarity among its dedicated fan community.

2- Are Star Trek and Star Wars related?

Star Trek and Star Wars have both attained immense popularity as science fiction franchises, captivating audiences around the world. However, it’s important to note that they are distinct entities with separate storylines and universes. They were conceived independently by different creators and produced by separate companies.

Star Trek, introduced to television audiences in 1966 through the visionary mind of Gene Roddenberry, explores a future of space exploration. On the other hand, Star Wars, brought to the big screen by George Lucas in 1977, presents a sweeping epic set in a galaxy far, far away. While both franchises have left an indelible mark on the science fiction genre and possess devoted fan bases, they remain separate and unconnected narratives in the realm of popular culture.

3- What is the watch order for Star Trek?

There are two ways to view the Star Trek franchise; one is the release order, and the second is the chronological order.

How to watch Star Trek in order

Whether you're wanting to check out the Original Series or Discovery, figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order is a breeze with this easy guide!

star trek discovery season 3 cast

Is it just us or is figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order getting more and more complex with each passing year? The prospect of watching Star Trek in order would be daunting for even the most decorated of starship captains with multiple series being brought to life on both the big and small screens. But fear not Trekkies - we've got you covered!

If you've ever tried to watch the Marvel movies in order , you'd be forgiven for thinking that was the most complicated franchise on the planet, but we kid you not - it has nothing on Star Trek. The 55-year-old sci-fi franchise includes nine (soon to be 11) TV shows and 13 movies and it spans 1000 years, making for one super complicated and vast timeline.

So, what is the best way to watch Star Trek in order? Well, that depends. For you purists out there, you might like to opt for viewing this franchise by release date, just like all the original Trekkie fans did back in the day. This will allow you to follow along as they did and get a similar experience. While the timeline does jump around, ( Star Trek: Discovery , for example, is set at the end of the 32nd century but was released before Star Trek: Picard , which is set in the 24th century), it gives you a more complete picture.

Because the Star Trek franchise involves movies and TV series that take place at different times, another option is to watch everything in chronological order. This means you get to start with something a little bit more modern, but the one problem with this is that references will often be made to films you've not yet seen, which could make certain elements difficult to follow.

To be honest, just like we recommend in our guide to how to watch the Star Wars movies in order , it really is a matter of personal preference. As long as you have one of the best TVs , you'll find you enjoy this franchise no matter what order you decide to watch it in.

So, without further ado, here's how to watch Star Trek in order - based on release date and in-universe continuity...

Star Trek TV shows and movies in chronological order

This is probably the list you're looking for if you're trying to figure out how to watch Star Trek in order. It's where things get really interesting, as Star Trek movies and TV shows have a habit of jumping around the franchise's chronology with sequels, prequels and bits in between. There are even two distinct timelines – but don't worry, we'll explain all that.

The original ‘Prime’ timeline was started by the Original Series, the Next Generation-era TV shows, and the first ten movies, The alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline, meanwhile, was created in JJ Abrams’ first Star Trek (2009) to allow the familiar Enterprise crew of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov to have new adventures without contradicting canon . To avoid confusion, we've defined the two timelines as separate entities below.

This list doesn't, however, include all of the brief Short Treks – short stories which are mostly set around the Star Trek: Discovery era – and adventures where Starfleet crews time-travelled to the eras before any of the shows/movies are set (eg visits to 1986 in The Voyage Home and 2063 in First Contact). We've also left out upcoming Discovery spin-off Star Trek: Section 31 , since it's not yet in production. (Also, we're not entirely sure exactly when it'll be set.)

Let's start with everything in one big list.

  • Star Trek: Enterprise (seasons 1-4)
  • ‘The Cage’
  • Star Trek: Discovery (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • Star Trek: The Original Series  (seasons 1-3)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
  • Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
  • Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
  • Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier
  • Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
  • Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 1-5)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 6-7), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Generations
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 3-4), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: First Contact
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 5-6), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 3-4)
  • Star Trek: Insurrection
  • S tar Trek: Deep Space Nine (season 7), Star Trek: Voyager (season 5)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 6-7)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks
  • Star Trek: Prodigy
  • Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences
  • Star Trek: Picard
  • Star Trek: Discovery (season 3-)
  • Short Treks: 'Calypso'

If you watch in the order given above, you'll get a continuous ‘history’ of the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 32nd centuries according to the Star Trek timeline. That said, you will notice some odd discrepancies – thanks to the time in which respective shows were made, the technology in prequel show Star Trek: Discovery is significantly more advanced than what Kirk and Spock used in the Original Series.

Below, we'll explain how the different eras of the shows and movies break down for context.

Note that Gene Roddenberry's original pre-Kirk Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage', is counted as an instalment of the Original Series. You'll usually find it listed as a bonus episode as part of season one when you're watching it on streaming services.

Star Trek: Enterprise era (22nd century) Begins and ends with: Star Trek Enterprise seasons 1-4

About a century before James T Kirk and his crew embark on their famous five-year mission in Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Jonathan Archer leads Earth's first steps into the wider universe.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series era (23rd century) Begins with: 'The Cage' Ends with: Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)

For many this is the most familiar era of Star Trek, since it involves Kirk, Spock and the classic Enterprise crew.

This section of the Trek timeline kicks off with the original unaired Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage' . Next up in franchise chronology are the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , which work as a prequel to the Original Series (they even feature a younger version of Spock), but it's all change in season 3 – the events of the season 2 finale send the crew into the distant future of the 32nd century. More on that later...

Upcoming spin-off Strange New Worlds will follow the adventures of Captain Pike, Number One and Spock on the Enterprise after the USS Discovery travelled to the future. And at some point after that, Captain James T Kirk will take command of Starfleet's most famous ship – a role he filled throughout The Original Series , The Animated Series and the first six Star Trek movies ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture , The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ).

The latest point we've seen (so far) in the 23rd century era is James T Kirk being taken away by the Nexus ribbon in the prologue of Star Trek: Generations . This is the event that allows Kirk to meet Picard when the Next Generation crew take on the mantle of headlining the big screen franchise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation era (24th century) Begins with: Star Trek: The Next Generation Ends with: Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences

The richest, most complicated period in Star Trek chronology. During The Next Generation era, Star Trek was experimenting with the idea of a shared universe years before Marvel got in on the act, with three TV shows (TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager ) and four movies ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) interweaving through the same timeline – Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway even shows up in Star Trek: Nemesis as a newly promoted admiral.

New animated comedy spin-off Lower Decks is set a year after Picard and the Next Generation crew's final mission in Star Trek: Nemesis, while Nickelodeon kids' cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy will see Kate Mulgrew reprising her role as Voyager's captain, Kathryn Janeway. That suggests it will presumably be set at a similar point in the Star Trek timeline.

In JJ Abrams' first Star Trek movie (2009), the destruction of Romulus and Spock Prime's accidental trip back to the pre-Original Series era (in the Kelvin timeline) also take place after the events of Nemesis.

In the list above, we've shown how the movies (roughly) fit into the chronology of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

Star trek: Picard

Picard era (turn of the 25th century) Begins with: Picard Ends with: ???

Aside from glimpses of the destruction of Romulus in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Picard gives us our first post-Star Trek: Nemesis look at what the United Federation of Planets has become.

Since we last saw Jean-Luc Picard, he's retired to his vineyard in France, an android uprising on Mars has led to a ban on all synthetic life, and a disabled Borg Cube (known simply as the 'Artifact') is being mined for technology.

star trek discovery season 3 story

Distant future (32nd century) Begins with : Star Trek: Discovery season 2 (finale) Ends with: ???

In order to save the galaxy, the brave crew of the USS Discovery set off on a one-way mission 900 years into the future in Star Trek: Discovery 's season 2 finale. Their 32nd century destination is new territory for Star Trek – thanks to the mysterious 'Burn', most of the dilithium in the galaxy has been destroyed, making warp travel impossible. As a result, the Federation is a shadow of its former self – even Earth has decided to go it alone.

This isn't, however, the furthest Star Trek has ventured into the future – Short Trek ' Calypso ' is set on the Discovery in a distant future where the ship's computer has become sentient.

Star Trek's alternate 'Kelvin' timeline explained

A still from Star trek Beyond

In 2009's Star Trek movie directed by JJ Abrams, Spock Prime tries to save Romulus from a supernova, inadvertently creates a black hole while doing so, and gets pulled into the past, along with Romulan mining vessel the Narada. Once there, the Narada attacks the USS Kelvin on the day James T Kirk is born. The ship is destroyed as Kirk's father, George, sacrifices himself to save the rest of the crew.

When all that happens, the alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline is created, with events unfolding in parallel (but with remarkable similarity) to the original Prime timeline.

Got all that? There are just three movies set in the Kelvin timeline:

  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek into Darkness
  • Star Trek Beyond

Considering The Original Series was cancelled after just three seasons in 1969, it's remarkable that Star Trek is still around half a century later. But as the show's popularity grew in syndication on US TV, Trek fandom became a big enough force for the five-year mission to resume via Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973. Most of the original cast – with the notable exception of Walter Koenig (Chekov) – were enticed back to voice their characters.

Then, helped by Star Wars turning sci-fi into the hottest genre in Hollywood, Star Trek beamed onto the big screen with 1979's The Motion Picture . The original crew headed up five more movies ( The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ) before bowing out in 1991. The ’80s also gave the world a hint of the Star Trek that never was when 'The Cage' , the original unaired pilot, was released on VHS in 1986 (it appeared on TV two years later). Of the pilot crew, only Leonard Nimoy's Spock went on to reprise his role in the TV show, though footage from 'The Cage' was used extensively in the Original Series’ only two-parter, 'The Menagerie'.

While the Enterprise was making it big in cinemas, the franchise returned to its TV roots in 1987 with The Next Generation . Set over 70 years after Kirk and Spock's final mission, it featured a new crew – led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard – on board a new starship Enterprise. The Next Generation was arguably even more successful than the Original Series, spawning two spin-off series: Deep Space Nine (which began in 1993) played with the Trek format by focusing on a space station, while Voyager (1995) dumped its crew on the other side of the galaxy, hundreds of light years from home.

The Next Generation crew also fronted four movies of their own ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) between 1995 and 2002.

After Voyager came to an end in 2001, Star Trek left the Next Generation era behind, and went in a completely different direction – Star Trek: Enterprise was a prequel set a century before Kirk and Spock's adventures. Enterprise lasted only four seasons, however (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all made it to seven), and was canceled in 2005.

These were also dark times for the movie branch of the Trek franchise, as the disappointing box office performance of Nemesis had put the film saga on hiatus – it wasn't until 2009 that Star Trek warped back onto the big screen.

Future Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams (already hot property as director of Mission: Impossible 3 and co-creator of Lost) gave the franchise an action blockbuster makeover, recasting Kirk, Spock and the rest of the original crew as rookies on their first mission. The reboot, simply titled Star Trek , made more than twice as much at the box office as any of its predecessors, and two sequels ( Star Trek into Darkness , Star Trek Beyond ) followed.

Star Trek belatedly returned to TV in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery . Set a decade before the Original Series, it was a darker, more serialized Trek than we’d seen before – more in tune with the prestige shows of the so-called Golden Age of TV. As it’s turned out, it was just the beginning of Star Trek's renewed assault on TV...

A series of brief Short Treks appeared online ahead of Discovery's second season, while The Next Generation follow-up Star Trek: Picard left spacedock in January 2020. Animated series Lower Decks followed in August 2020, and Discovery spin-off Strange New Worlds – featuring Anson Mount's Captain Pike, Rebecca Romijn's Number One and Ethan Peck's Spock on the pre-Kirk Enterprise – is now in production.

There's also another cartoon offering heading for the Alpha Quadrant, in the form of animated kids show Star Trek: Prodigy.

And there's potentially even more to come, as the much-talked about Michelle Yeoh vehicle Section 31 is still in development. But with Paramount Plus programming boss Julie McNamara telling Variety that the streaming service's current aim is to debut "a new Trek every quarter", we may have to wait for Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks and/or Strange New Worlds to stand aside before we get a new TV iteration of Trek.

To keep things simple, all the shows above are listed by the date their first episode aired. While the chronology does jump around if you watch Star Trek in order of release date, there are some benefits. For example, the prequel shows assume a fair bit of knowledge of earlier series, like the Borg's appearance in Star Trek: Enterprise episode 'Regeneration', or Star Trek: Discovery's revelations about the ultimate fate of Christopher Pike (the Enterprise captain in 'The Cage', who later shows up in 'The Menagerie'). Moments like that undoubtedly make more sense in the context of later events in the Star Trek timeline.

  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham standing on the bridge in a still from Star Trek Discovery

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

New shows on Netflix

Genre: Drama miniseries Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Abi Morgan Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, and more

Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a puppeteer happily living and working in 1980s New York City. Then, his 9-year-old son goes missing on the way to school, plunging Vincent into a dark, volatile depression. Vincent believes his son will come back if only he can get Eric, a monster based on a drawing his son did, to the screen.

Genre: Teen show Release date: May 30 Based on the book by: Holly Smale Cast: Emily Carey, Sarah Parish, Emmanuel Imani, and more

Harriet (Emily Carey) is just another geek trying to get by in high school, even if it means brushing off some mean girl bullies to do it. But everything changes when — against the odds and Harriet’s wishes — she finds herself scouted to be the next hot supermodel.

New shows on Hulu

The veil season finale.

Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) kneeling behind a car with a gun out

Genre: Spy thriller Release date: May 28 Showrunner/creator: Steven Knight Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yumna Marwan, Josh Charles, and more

The stage is set in London for a deadly attack. But Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) and Adilah (Yumna Marwan) are also on the move. And with Imogen keeping her master plan secret from even us, it seems likely that this attack could go either way.

Under the Bridge finale

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a still from Under the Bridge

Genre: True-crime mystery Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creator: Samir Mehta, Quinn Shephard Cast: Lily Gladstone, Riley Keough, and more

There’s nothing about the murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) that feels easy to swallow, and it’s a testament to Under the Bridge that the show has been able to balance the complexities of that reality in its seven episodes so far. Now, it’s coming to a close — one that no doubt will carry the weight of every ounce of tragedy in this story.

New shows on Max

Hacks season 3 finale.

Deborah (Jean Smart) sits smiling with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) on the arm of her chair in a still from Hacks

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky Cast: Hannah Einbinder, Jean Smart, and more

It’s all happening for Deborah (Jean Smart), now that she finally got her dream of hosting a late-night show. Only suddenly, there’s some last-minute doubt: Will Ava (Hannah Einbinder) be allowed to come along for the ride?

New shows on Paramount Plus

Pyramid game.

Genre: Thriller Release date: May 30, with all 10 episodes Showrunner/creator: Choi Sui Cast: Bona, Jang Da-a, Ryu Da-in, and more

Seong Su-ji is a new student at the Baekyeon Girls’ High School, and everything is already feeling like a fight for survival as she battles bullies and studies alike. And then she’s introduced to a new ranking system that lets people secretly vote for who they think should be a class outcast. Now, Su-ji has to decide whether to keep going along (and possibly accepting the violence that comes with it) or else lead an uprising against this shadowy “Pyramid Game.”

Star Trek: Discovery series finale

L-R Alfredo Narciso as Ohvahz and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. They are wearing hand-made alien garments, and conversing calmly while sitting on the floor in a stone room.

Genre: Star Trek Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Akiva Goldsman Cast: Sonequa Martin-Green, Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, and more

The end of an era! By which I mean not only the season we got of 900 years in Star Trek’s future, but also Discovery , which wraps up this Thursday. It’s the end of the first Star Trek show of the modern era, and is free in a way Star Trek hasn’t been in a long, long while , all while paving the way for more Trek to come.

New shows on Peacock

We are lady parts season 2.

Genre: “Yeah, I’m in a band” teen comedy Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Nida Manzoor Cast: Anjana Vasan, Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and more

We Are Lady Parts is back and ready to record their debut album. Which means it’s the perfect time for more bandmate shenanigans — including battling a rival Muslim band, playing a festival, exploring your “villain era.” All that and Malala Yousafzai is supposed to show up sometime this season!

New shows on Apple TV Plus

Loot season 2 finale.

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creators: Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard Cast: Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, and more

The Wells Foundation — and Molly (Maya Rudolph), the billionaire woman who runs it — are nearing their greatest success yet. Which, of course, means reality is about to come crashing in with some major personal decisions. How will the dust settle in the season 2 finale?

New shows on Showtime

Couples therapy season 4.

Genre: Documentary series Release date: May 31, with one episode; on-air premiere at 10 p.m. EDT on June 2 Showrunner/creator: Dr. Orna Guralnik Cast: Real-life couples in therapy

It’s a new season of Couples Therapy, and an all-new cast of couples to undergo real therapy with Dr. Orna. The result will be unpredictable — couples therapy, after all, is about figuring yourselves out together, not necessarily saving the relationship. The good news? It will most likely be cathartic, one way or another.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 6 Or Movie - Everything We Know

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery's Series Finale - "Life, Itself"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 concludes the series with multiple endings for Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery crew.
  • There are no plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6, but a Paramount+ streaming movie continuation is a possibility.
  • Future Star Trek projects include spinoffs from Discovery, upcoming series, and movies on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery has ended, but will the flagship Star Trek series on Paramount+ return for season 6 or a streaming movie? Star Trek: Discovery began in 2017 and helped launch the CBS All-Access streaming service, which later rebranded as Paramount+. Discovery was the first new Star Trek series in 12 years and brought the franchise into the streaming era with cinematic visuals and serialized storytelling. Discovery 's success led to multiple Star Tre k spinoffs , including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , as well as the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the made-for-streaming Star Trek: Section 31 movie.

Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 wasn't produced as the final season, after the cast and crew learned the series was ending, Paramount+ allowed them to film new scenes to wrap up Star Trek: Discovery with an epilogue to the series finale, "Life, Itself". Star Trek: Discovery season 5 turned out to be one of the show's strongest seasons, with an adventurous tone that delivered thrills and poignant moments. Discovery season 5 also contained multiple callbacks to past Star Trek series to better tie the 32nd century-set saga with the franchise's legacy. But now that Star Trek: Discovery is officially over, will Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery return for season 6 or a movie on Paramount+?

Star Trek' s next live-action Paramount+ series and movies, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, Star Trek: Section 31 , and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 are all spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Will Star Trek: Discovery Season 6 Happen?

Discovery has taken its last ride..

There are no known plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 contained multiple endings that concluded the story of Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery. The original ending of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 consisted of the wedding of Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) while Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) resumed their love story just in time for their next adventure. Star Trek: Discovery 's series finale epilogue flashed forward decades to send off the USS Discovery to its ultimate destiny.

Paramount Studios is up for sale, which will inevitably affect future Star Trek projects.

However, Star Trek: Discovery s eason 5's ending doesn't preclude season 6 were it to be greenlit by Paramount+. Discovery 's finale epilogue scenes simply mean audiences learn what happens to Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery in the far future, but there is plenty of time before that to tell more stories about the USS Discovery and its crew. Star Trek: Discovery has wrapped, but it's possible the cast and crew could reunite for season 6 after some time has passed.

What Star Trek: Discovery Season 6 Would Have Been About

Discovery's epilogue was an abbreviated version of season 6's story.

If Star Trek: Discovery season 6 happened, showrunner Michelle Paradise indicated that its focus would have been tying the series into Star Trek: Short Treks' "Calypso". Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman wanted to make sure the lingering question about whether "Calypso" is Star Trek: Discovery canon is definitively answered. Instead, Star Trek: Discovery 's finale coda delivered the link that leads directly into "Calypso".

Michelle Paradise also told Screen Rant in our exclusive interview that "we hadn't gotten far enough down the road to know what would happen" to Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and Moll (Eve Harlow), two of Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new additions who proved popular with audiences. Both Moll and Rayner ended Discovery season 5 with hints that they would stay on into season 6 , had it happened. Perhaps what's next for Rayner and Moll will be revealed in the next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Answers The Series Finale's Burning Questions

Screen Rant interviews Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise about the biggest questions left behind by the series finale.

Will Star Trek: Discovery Get A Paramount Plus Streaming Movie?

Five seasons... and a movie.

A streaming movie on Paramount+ is a potential option for a continuation of Star Trek: Discovery . A plan to feature a new Star Trek movie on Paramount+ every 2 years kicks off when Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh premieres on the streamer. Reuniting the cast of Star Trek: Discovery for a Paramount+ movie is a definite possibility. However, there are no known plans for a Star Trek: Discovery movie and the future of Star Trek streaming movies depends on how Section 31 performs on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Section 31 is being eyed for a possible sequel if the film is a success.

What Star Trek TV Series & Movies Are Coming After Discovery Ends?

Star trek will still be going strong..

Star Trek will continue to go boldly after Star Trek: Discovery ends, with multiple announced Star Trek projects in various stages of production and development. (Executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who oversees all of Star Trek on Paramount+, says there are more unannounced Star Trek projects in the works.) Star Trek: Lower Decks will stream season 5, which is also its final season, on Paramount+ in fall 2024. Netflix is also going to premiere Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 sometime in 2024. Star Trek: Section 31 is awaiting a Paramount+ premiere date, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped filming season 3 with season 4 greenlit. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will also start production in late summer 2024.

Paramount Pictures ' Star Trek movie franchise is also ramping up after nearly a decade of development hell. Paramount announced an Untitled Star Trek Origin movie directed by Toby Haynes will begin production later in 2024 for a 2025 or 2026 theatrical release. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is reportedly signing on to oversee the Star Trek theatrical movies similar to how Alex Kurtzman runs Star Trek streaming on Paramount+. Producer J.J. Abrams is also reportedly trying to launch Star Trek 4 and reunite the USS Enterprise cast led by Chris Pine. As Star Trek: Discovery heads off to its final frontier, it leaves Star Trek stronger than how it found it.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is available to stream on Paramount+

Star Trek: Discovery Season 6 Or Movie - Everything We Know

The 'Star Trek: Discovery' series finale is a mixed bag (review)

"Discovery" was the first of the new wave of "Star Trek," and it helped pave the way for the recent renaissance in television science fiction. For that, we are thankful.

seven people in purple spaceflight uniforms stand on a futuristic-looking set.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 10

Here we are, six years, eight months and six days later, and, to paraphrase a well-known " Star Trek " alum, Oh my, the world has drastically changed during that time. And so has "Star Trek." You may remember that, way back on Nov. 2, 2015, news trickled out that CBS was going to reboot "Star Trek" in some way, shape or form, giving producers a year or so to put something together before the show's 50th anniversary in September 2016. A perfect promotional opportunity.

Nicholas Meyer was originally attached to the project before he was ousted. Then Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts were fired before Bryan Fuller left the project, ultimately leaving everything in the hands of Alex Kurtzman. And he has taken something of a back seat in recent seasons, leaving the showrunning duties to Michelle Paradise.

The first episode of the first season, entitled "The Vulcan Hello," aired on Sept. 24, 2016 and showed massive potential. However, the concept of focusing the show not on the captain of the USS Discovery NCC-1031, but on the first officer instead, proved difficult to maintain. Consequently, over time we've ended up where we are now — lost somewhere ludicrously far forward in time where transporters have replaced stairs and you can just beam into new uniforms.

closeup of a smiling woman with short hair

Over the last seven and a half years, it's been a  very  mixed bag; there were  inspired episodes ,  missed opportunities , truly  bizarre stories , some  blatant plagiarism  and even a nod  to Scooby-Doo . Despite some  very good  standalone episodes, the show has steadily declined in the quality of story writing. That's not to say the performances have been bad at all; in fact, "Discovery" has some of the finest talent in television. What has let them all down is ultimately the decisions made by the showrunner, or whoever it is who oversees the writing.

Despite a strong start, it soon became clear that, as "Star Wars" has a Skywalker problem, "Star Trek" suffered from a similar Enterprise problem. It was incapable of letting go. For some ridiculous reason, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) had  to be related to Spock, and we had to actually have the USS Enterprise show up. It's much less work to draw on a deep well of existing character history than actually write anything new, you see. Maybe studio executives have an even shorter attention span than viewers?

Now, while that's spawned " Strange New Worlds " — which is the best of  NuTrek so far, by far— it would've been nice to have had a show, still set less than three centuries from now, with   new   characters and minimal reference to any other longstanding "Star Trek" shows. Kurtzman's decision to fling the series 1,100 years into the future at the end of season two to "free it from the constraints of existing canon" was an effort to recover from this, but the damage had already been done.

Related: 'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 9 offers a tense but questionable cliffhanger

a bearded man stares through a set of metal bars.

However, bringing "Star Trek" back onto the small screen has had an undeniably positive effect on television science fiction. The fact that CBS All Access, later Paramount Plus, was investing so heavily in it undoubtedly influenced Amazon with its decision to save "The Expanse" in August 2018. Plus, in November 2017, Disney announced it was going to put a live action "Star Wars" spinoff show on our humble TV screens, and, exactly two years later, we got " The Mandalorian ." And let's not forget " The Orville ," which also arrived on our screens in September 2017.

"Discovery" helped pave the way for a renaissance in television science fiction and for that, we are eternally thankful, but ... we won't be even remotely sad to say goodbye to black alerts, that damn spore drive, smartmatter, excessive flamebursts, detached nacelles, Georgiou's smug sniggers, Burnham's Bottom Lip™ and those crazy, cavernous turbolift spaces .

For the finale, though, we're treated to a whopping 90-minute installment, written by Michelle Paradise, so you have some idea of what's coming. And to be perfectly honest, this episode drags. Paradise always favors super-fluffy storylines that leave you with a cheese-overload aftertaste, and we've never seen evidence to suggest that she has any range beyond this. So, that's what you can expect, and that's exactly what is delivered — a cookie cutter-style finale that's mostly disappointing.

Malinne "Moll" Ravel (Eve Harlow) has just become annoying now, and the side plot threads, like that of Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), feel forced and hastily tacked on. And ultimately, you're left thinking that this finale is just like all the others we've seen in seasons three, four and now five. For the end-of-series climax, could it not have been something slightly different? Extremely unlikely with Paradise running this show. Also, what actually was the Progenitor tech? A galaxy-sized MacGuffin? Yes. Again.

Yes, there is a link to the "Short Trek" installment " Calypso ," but in order for it to directly correspond, we see the USS Discovery being reverse-engineered to its former 23rd century state, complete with a removed "A" from the hull registry and reattached warp nacelles. Oh, and it turns out that Kovich (David Cronenberg) is Daniels, a temporal agent played by Matt Winston and first introduced in the "Enterprise" episode "Cold Front" S01, E11, with seven more appearances in the thoroughly enjoyable temporal story thread. So, that's nice.

The fact that Burnham becomes an admiral and works for Starfleet Intelligence now, along with everything we've just mentioned above was absolutely, unquestionably added to help link this episode, show and characters with the Section 31 television movie that's being made starring Michelle Yeoh. Moreover, the same was done to help tie in with the new Starfleet Academy series that quite obviously is being set in the 32nd century.

As she set off to fulfill Discovery's destiny with Zora, it might have been nice to see Burnham locate and gently rub the small metal burr under the captain’s chair’s left armrest that Captain Georgiou had practically rubbed smooth, as was explained to Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) in the episode " Su'Kal " (S03, E11) — but evidently no one thought of that.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," and every other episode of every " Star Trek " show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, while "Prodigy" has found a new home  on Netflix .

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on Paramount Plus in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

[ Discovery 509 review with Lisa Klink starts at 25:59]

There’s big news this week! Anthony and Laurie talk about the announcement that Oscar winner Holly Hunter will lead the Starfleet Academy  series and reports that Simon Kinberg is in talks to oversee a new era of Star Trek feature films. They discuss the news that  Picard ‘s Terry Matalas is showrunning for Marvel, note that Strange New Worlds season 3 is about to wrap, and try to be patient like the Hageman brothers about when to expect Prodigy on Netflix.

After listening to some of Tony’s interview with  Discovery ‘s Blu del Barrio (Adira), Tony and Laurie are joined by  Voyager/Deep Space Nine writer Lisa Klink to review the penultimate episode of  Star Trek: Discovery , “Lagrange Point.”

They wrap up with a fan-led stream-a-thon to save Lower Decks  and a lovely article from  Discovery ‘s Patrick Kwok-Choon about becoming a dad and captaining the Discovery on the same day.

Holly Hunter To Lead ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Series As Chancellor

In regards to potential TNG cameos in the final episode, why not Salome Jens as the Progenitor?

Also a good option!

Well, considering we saw both Mol and Burnham disappear into the warm white glow of the Celestial Temple…..

Gonna go out on a limb here…perhaps the reason Paramount announced Holly Hunter’s casting this week is because she shows up in the finale as a set-up for Academy, kind of like Paul Wesley in SNW’s S1 finale.

Hey you won, congratulations!

So is Anthony thinking that the Star Trek origin movie will be a whole new Trek universe like Ultimate Marvel rebooted a new Marvel Universe in the comics (while the classic Marvel continued on also)?

That’s what I inferred, with the RDM BSG reference. Done right (again, with Ron Moore’s BSG as the template) I’d watch.

Thanks again for a great discussion! About Academy: since this is the establishment of a new, post-Burn Academy at its original San Francisco location, I wonder if the “new enemy” is a movement, as we saw toward the end of Enterprise, that is isolationist, “Earth First,” and opposes Earth’s rejoining the Federation and the restoration of the Academy (and presumably Starfleet superseding the autonomous Earth security force that existed after The Burn). That certainly would speak to our times.

I’m kind hoping someone shakes off the brain fart of needing yet another enemy to amp up the tension. Maybe we can tell interesting stories for three or four short seasons without having to worry about saving the galaxy. Again. And again…..

Fair enough, though to split hairs the blurb didn’t say anything about the galaxy being imperiled.

….true that, just the Academy and the Federation, which isn’t quite what it used to be.

I agree with that!

Look at that, Phil agreeing with Phil :)) LOL

As a Linux user I feel obliged to point out that Phil != phil ;-)

Lets see they used the Gorn, the Romulans, The Breen, the Borg, the Changelings, the klingons, at this point they used nearly all the big bads. I think its about them they change their approach to the bad guys and stop recycling what came before. Academy show is the perfect opportunity for this.

I could not agree more. Time for something new!

Where Species 8472 is still out there somewhere.

JUST SAYING! 😂

But yeah I agree, it’s time to do something different for a change.

They could do that, but wasn’t that already done with the Earth storyline in Discovery season 3 when they jump to the future and find the Federation shattered?

Yes, and eventually all the founding worlds rejoined the reinvigorated Federation. I was just thinking about who would have issues with the restoration of the Academy.

Yeah, seems a bit moustache twirly. Imagine a foreign adversary wanting to conquer the Americans, and to it, they will attack UCLA.

But seriously, the Academy has always been loosely defined. It’s a huge suspension of disbelief that anyone from across the vastness of Federation space who wanted to join Starfleet packed up and headed off to San Francisco.

No it’s not! They get to ride the cable cars!

I wasn’t thinking about alien foes but homegrown “Earther” (as the Klingons called humans in TOS) NIMBYs.

Yeah, having the Academy in SanFran was a symptom of the human desire to put Earth at the center of everything syndrome, not to mention the Fed HQ in Paris.

I actually love the idea that aliens all over the Alpha Quadrant are coming to Earth to study and just hanging out in the Height Ashbury district (where I used to live) between classes lol.

But I always imagined Starfleet would’ve just built extension schools on other important Federation worlds; at least by the 24th century when Starfleet and the Federation had really expanded by then.

Just listened to the podcast and as usual really great and informative discussion. And per usual agree with Laurie 100% of all of it.

A few random thoughts about the discussions.

First off, for the new movie, yes count me as skeptical it will ever happen but would love to be proven wrong. But listening to the discussion I guess I would be happy if it is a reboot because they could just go an entirely different direction and do some interesting things with it. Like Laurie l didn’t really want a TOS reboot ever and was very ho hum about the first Kelvin movie…. until I heard it was going to be an alternate universe story and oddly I got very excited over it. Unfortunately they didn’t really take advantage of their premise as fully as they should have but it was still a great idea IMO.

If the new movie is a complete reboot and starting fresh with new characters it could be interesting even if it is another tired prequel. But since it’s based on a time period we know very little about if we’re talking between First Contact and Enterprise then that’s about 90 years they can play with and why I don’t think it’s a reboot; unless they plan to do something radically different that just breaks canon. But I guess we’d see.

As for Discovery and the interview discussing Adira wow Anthony hit it right on the head when he asked how come we have never heard of her life on Earth…like ever??

It’s so bizarre. They have a character that’s literally the only one who lived on Earth in the 32nd century and has a very old Trill symbiote inside her and preceded to do nothing with either of those elements. I completely forgot she even came from Earth until this interview.

Why not tell us something about her life living there? Some insight into what Earth is like or how different it is since the Burn? It would’ve been interesting if we ran into a relative of hers or something. Does she actually have real parents??? I don’t remember if any of that has been touched upon.

And also why not use the Tal symbiote more? Maybe because she’s human it’s different but it’s funny they gave her this very unique backstory and then basically forgot about it once they used it to get them to Federation headquarters in season 3 when they could’ve built a very interesting arc around it for the character.

Instead it’s just been three seasons of being with her boyfriend and doubting herself on the ship; typical Discovery melodrama stuff instead of real character introspection and development but I digress.

Lastly I am very happy for Terry Matalas getting a Marvel show but also don’t think it’s a nail in the coffin for the Legacy show idea or just being involved in Star Trek again in general. And as Anthony said I said myself most Marvel shows are really miniseries vs full on TV shows. It could go multiple seasons but so far only Loki only got two seasons basically. And it’s not an exclusive deal so he could still work on things outside of Marvel anyway.

I always have to cite yes I’m fully aware there is no Legacy show on the table right now nor there might not ever be one but we call it faith for a reason. 😉

And I did love hearing Lisa Klink thoughts on the episode. I liked hearing her thoughts about Voyager on the Delta Flyers as well.

Great job as usual guys!

I remember when they introduced Adira and I kept thinking we were going to get a deep dive into what it’s like to wake up with no memories of your own, just a lifetime of Trill ones. Such a great story idea! Thanks for all your thorough and thoughtful comments. Means a lot! (And I also love hearing Lisa on the Delta Flyers.)

Exactly they could’ve done so much more with the character. It’s really disappointing. I do like Adira but it’s amazing how little the writers done every season speaks to the MANY issues Discovery has.

And thank you for saying that! 🙂

Yes and absolutely love Lisa Klink!

Adira’s pronouns are they/them. It’s been more than three years. Is it really that hard to get it right for a pedant like you?

I’m just shocked I can even remember Adiras name at this point. 😉

You sound like such a lovely person. Take it easy.
