4 MINUTE READ
Words by Mr Tom M Ford
8 April 2016
Sir Mick Jagger on stage at the Los Angeles Coliseum, 1981. Photograph by Neal Preston/Corbis
Get total satisfaction from the band’s stylist Mr William Gilchrist as he talks us through the sartorial highs of Messrs Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Sir Mick Jagger.
Unless, like Mr Keith Richards , your sensory skills aren’t quite what they used to be, you’ll be well aware that Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones opened this week: a colossal exhibition celebrating the cultural impact of The Rolling Stones over the past 50 years. On display in London’s Saatchi Gallery on the King’s Road – a short walk from the Chelsea flat (recreated for the show, fag ends and all) where the band formed – are more than 500 rock ’n’ roll artefacts, including original stage designs, personal diaries and iconic clothing.
With this in mind, we thought we would take the opportunity to learn something from the gamut of The Rolling Stones’ style. And who better to school us than Mr William Gilchrist , a stylist who has worked with the band since 2005. While he took some time out in Havanna after the Stones’ politically ground-breaking gig late last month, we asked him for some quick wardrobe tips.
ADD SOME EDGE TO YOUR TAILORING
Mr Charlie Watts looking dapper in 1964. Photograph by Dezo Hoffmann/REX Shutterstock
Although most would associate The Rolling Stones with leather jackets , huge hair and bare chests, drummer Mr Charlie Watts also had a fine eye for tailoring, which is something we commend. He often wore suits made by Tommy Nutter, a man who reinvented the traditional Savile Row look in the 1960s (not unlike Mr Thom Browne has done in the last decade).
“When you look in the archive, you’ll see some great Tommy Nutter suits that Charlie [Watts] had done in the 1970s . They’re really beautiful pieces. He’s always been a man who likes quality. In those days, tailored clothing wasn’t unusual, but Tommy Nutter would put an edge into it. Charlie’s elegance was always there.”
DRESS FOR THE OCCASION
Pictured here on stage at the Coliseum in LA, Sir Mick Jagger flamboyantly wears a football jersey to reflect both the colourful “Americana” stage design on that particular US tour, and also the fact that The Stones were playing in the home stadium of the USC Trojans. Both appropriate _and _daring. Bravo, Sir Jagger.
“Being the focal point and lead singer, Mick is the most extravagant [in the band]. He was such an amazing-looking man that things that you or I would whimper at putting on, he became a tour de force with: the rather peculiar American football outfit, for example, and the jumpsuits.”
STYLE NEEDN’T BE SOBER
Sir Mick Jagger and Mr Keith Richards at the Villa Nellcôte, Villefranche-sur-Mer, 1971. Photograph by Dominique Tarle/La Galerie de L'instant Paris
Although we wouldn’t necessarily condone the amount of, er, relaxation that The Stones indulged in (which peaked in the early 1970s when they were making Exile On Main St ), it certainly didn’t harm their confidence in what they wore. The takeaway here is, always try to appear effortless and comfortable in your clothes, especially if you’re breaking the mould.
“During the time they were making Exile On Main St , they looked great. They weren’t in a good place substance-wise, but they were in a good place creatively. They were all in sync and moving beautifully. You get that confidence in both the music and how they looked.”
FIND A PERSONAL CONNECTION
Messrs Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards on a bus in Naples, c.1982. Photograph by Denis O’Regan/Getty Images
You should try to avoid becoming a slave to trends. Use your instinct and go with the pieces you know look good rather than what you think you ought to wear. And don’t let what other people say govern your clothes. Although, having said that, we insist that you remove your sunglasses indoors.
“Keith gets his hats from all over. He’s very organic in how he chooses something. There are items that you might associate with him that were given to him by someone who he connected with. It has to be a personal connection. He’ll never let clothing govern him in any way. It’s instinctive – ‘I like it and I don’t care what anyone says.’”

Luckily for us, when it comes to seeing the Rolling Stones live, you get both. Collectively, we've all gone through (and still are going through) a traumatic year and a half, one that saw us cut off from communal experiences like live music. But the Stones are offering some spiritual succor and ecstatic joy through the healing power of rock & roll as they return to the stage.
Objectively one of the greatest bands of all time, they're that rare entity that is still out there delivering epic rock shows without missing a beat after more than 50 years. Their second of two shows at Los Angeles' Sofi Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 17 was a rollicking good time, the encapsulation of Rock & Roll (capital Rs!) as it was and is. It's clear the band missed performing during the COVID-19 pandemic as much as audiences missed seeing them live, and they've put their entire being into making up for lost time. Perhaps Mick Jagger summed it up best himself, telling the audience as he left the stage that the entire night was "f---ing brilliant."
Here's 10 things you'll see at a Stones show in 2021.
A tribute to Charlie Watts
Back in August, the Stones lost their longtime drummer Charlie Watts, who had been with the band since 1963. His presence was felt throughout the night, as Jagger dedicated the show to him, but the proceedings also began with a touching tribute to the musician. Before the Stones took the stage, a drum solo and a litany of photos of Watts from his six decades with the band flashed across the giant screens, offering a celebration of their late friend.
Mick Jagger still defying space and time
May we all have the energy, charisma, and well-oiled knee and hip joints of Jagger when we're in our late seventies. The Stones frontman has long mesmerized with his signature gyrations and nimble footwork, but what's astonishing is how much he's still got it. Whether he's picking up the acoustic guitar to lead the band into a rendition of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" that escalates into a bluesy good time, strutting his stuff down the catwalk, riffing on the harmonica, or literally sprinting from one side of the stage to the other, his tireless, guileless love of a crowd and putting a show are the electric pulse that makes the Stones still feel like a super-charged live wire of a band.
Ronnie Wood's sparkly converse
At one time, Jagger and company turned heads (and radically changed fashion) with their flamboyant clothing and high-heeled boots. They have had to convert to more practical footwear over the years, but Ronnie Wood still finds room for that pizazz with his glittery converse.
Ballad Roulette
The Stones mostly want to keep you dancing, but they do make time for the occasional ballad. On the No Filter tour, they've introduced a nightly vote for a ballad, giving the audience four choices ahead of the show and then launching into the "surprise" selection. Sunday night saw all-time great "Wild Horses" named the winner, and Jagger delivered a soulful rendition that kept audiences on their feet in his thrall.
The most eye-catching collection of colorful blazers and jackets the world has ever seen
The Stones wouldn't be the Stones without their signature flashy looks, whether it's Keith Richards' scarves, Wood's eye-catching blazer, or Jagger's carousel of gorgeous jackets. The No Filter tour is no exception with Jagger regularly stripping off one jacket, cavorting momentarily in his lithe, black mesh top, and donning another one. There's even a mini clothing rack on stage for him to pull from. He really pulls out the big guns for "Sympathy for the Devil," donning a bottle-green, bedazzled topcoat that ups the ante on Jagger's embodiment of a sexy Lucifer.
The longest version of "Midnight Rambler" known to man
Widely considered the quintessential Jagger-Richards song and in Richards' own words, a "blues opera," 1969 jam "Midnight Rambler" has never been a short entry in the Stones' oeuvre (the studio track runs 6:53). But the Stones go long (over 10 minutes!) on this encapsulation of their distinctive blend of blues and rock, coming together and playing as a group in the most distinctive tableau of the night. Plus, it's the perfect showcase for Jagger's dance moves and harmonica skills. The Stones have transformed this into an extended riff on their musical style, but you still probably will never want it to end.
In addition to their litany of greatest hits, the Stones are still regularly making new music. The No Filter tour features the 2020 single, "Living in a Ghost Town," a tune that Jagger tweaked to reflect the social distancing and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's probably the grooviest song that will ever be penned about a global pandemic, and Jagger leans into it with his utmost swagger, proving the Stones can still write new classics. He even finds a way to include the audience in the fun despite it probably being less familiar to our ears.
Sasha freaking Allen
The Stones have never had a shortage of great on-stage performers when it comes to their band and backup vocalists. But they have an extraordinary talent in Sasha Allen, who sings back-up vocals throughout the night, before getting to shine as a soloist on "Gimme Shelter." Her visceral howl lends the song the potent urgency it requires, reaching down straight into your gut and refusing to let go. Plus, she holds her own facing off against and duet-ing with Jagger.
Plenty of reminiscing
The Stones have been doing this long enough that no show is complete without some nods to their storied history. But Sunday night was particularly special as it marked the 60th anniversary of childhood friends Jagger and Richards randomly reconnecting on a British train platform, a pivotal moment in rock history as it spurred their enduring musical partnership. "Keith and I met each other on the train station at Dartford," Jagger told the audience. "We knew each other before because we were at school together. But we hadn't seen each other for awhile, so that was a good re-meeting."
The greatest hits proving why they're still great
It's nearly impossible to choose a favorite Stones track because their catalog is so robust and varied. The No Filter tour is a testament to that fact, pinging from one hit to the next, buoyed by Jagger's sexy swagger and manic energy. Opening with "Street Fighting Man," it's a rollercoaster of rock from then on. They offer a breathtakingly electric, mesmerizing take on "Paint It Black" and remind us why classics like "Sympathy for the Devil," "Start Me Up," and "Satisfaction" are still some of the greatest music ever written. It's incredible that given the wild lives they led, Jagger and Richards are still able to offer such a mind-blowing show — but their music also makes it easy to believe that they just might be immortal.

What people don't tell you about the Rolling Stones on their No Filter tour
Includes: stuff about their hair, Mick's terrible between-song banter, what #MeToo means to them and more…
The Rolling Stones are on tour. The biggest touring band in the world – the Stones grossed $120 million with just 14 shows of this tour in 2017 – they are arguably the greatest rock band ever. People are loving it.
The Classic Rock office came back from the London shows buzzing. There’s a proper review in the next issue. But there are certain things no one is really saying and we won’t shirk from the important issues. Like, number 1…
1. Their Hair
Their hair is unchanged since last we saw them. In the Hair Colour World Cup, the current and possibly final score – cos let’s face it, Mick Jagger is going to his grave with black hair – is 2-2. As it should be. The colour of the Stones’ hair is all part of their delicate-yet-titanium cosmic balance (which is also the name of the conditioner Mick uses).
In the Grey Corner: Keith and Charlie, the guardians of the Stones’ credibility. Two men who wear their age proudly. Charlie: proud, stubborn, unfuckable. Charlie has barely looked in the mirror since 1974, except to check that his collar is straight*. Keith, meanwhile, is the unrepentant, unflappable survivor, flashing a grin as white as his hair. Keith thinks mirrors are for something else entirely.
In the Black Corner: Mick and Ronnie, the good time Charlies – the lothario and the party animal – the young fathers, with young families, whip-thin, ready at any moment to do the school-run, throw together a packed-lunch or hit a showbiz party.
Even the two other most-core members are perfectly in synch: Corner man for the grey hairs: Chuck Leavell (wisdom) Corner man for the black hairs: Darryl Jones (power)

The outer circle? Matt Clifford, Sasha Allen, Karl Denson, Tim Reese, Bernard Fowler – all black hairs. This fucks with my theory a little but, c’mon, of course they are. Old guys can’t keep up with the Stones, man.
2. The Set-List
The set-list is impeccable, obviously. I have put a lot of thought into this and you haven’t, so take my word for it when I say that I can confirm that the Rolling Stones are, as advertised, the Greatest Rock’n’Roll Band In The World.
The greatest band ever, in fact.
In the old “Beatles or the Stones?” argument, the Stones win, not just because they’re still walking, but because of those songs – the sheer width and depth of absolute bangers. For the variety of styles, the riffs, the lyrics, the era-defining anthems, The Stones resonate like few other bands.

The Beatles sound like flower power, Mary Quant and smocks . The Stones sound like fighting in the streets, like sex gods, serial killers and Studio 54. They are bluesmen, rock legends and party-starters, and every song is loaded with signifiers. Street Fighting Man is the Paris riots. Gimme Shelter is the death of the 60s – Altamont, Performance , Charles Manson. You Can't Always Get What You Want is the, uh, funeral scene in The Big Chill.
The set-list has varied slightly on every date on the No Filter tour. When we saw them in Coventry we got:
Street Fighting Man It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It) Tumbling Dice Paint It Black Ride 'Em on Down Like a Rolling Stone Dead Flowers You Can't Always Get What You Want Honky Tonk Women You Got the Silver Happy Sympathy for the Devil Miss You Midnight Rambler Start Me Up Jumpin' Jack Flash Brown Sugar Gimme Shelter (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Which is amazing, even if the Stones doing Like A Rolling Stone is a bit like Coldplay covering Oasis: a sneaky bit of cultural appropriation (“We ARE the 60s/90s!”). They get away with it because a) their name’s in the song and b) because… Look at the other song titles. Coldplay need a bit of help in the feelgood anthem stakes. The Stones don’t.
(For a minute during Like A Rolling Stone , I thought: why not go the whole hog? Why don’t they do Itchycoo Park, Sunshine Of Your Love and Voodoo Chile while they’re at it? But the answer to that is still b) Look at the other song titles on that list. They don’t have to.)
Highlights are Midnight Rambler , played with Jim Jones Revue levels of ferocity and distortion. It’s late in the set: for much of the night they’re like a football team who passes well – totally in possession but unable to score – but suddenly they get one in the net and you can feel them moving in for the kill.
Start Me Up is all-adrenaline. By Brown Sugar, Mick sounds short of breath, but it doesn’t matter because he has something up his sleeve: an outro that goes yeah-yeah-yeah-WOH! , surely the finest combination of sounds since Little Richard hollered "Awopbopaloobopawopbamboom!"
Satisfaction collapses in the middle and they all grin and roll their eyes sheepishly, but in fact it’s one of the best bits: funny and human. Yeah, human. The Rolling Stones are human.
3) The sound
The sound is dogshit, which is totally confusing in Coventry, because support band The Specials sounded great – clean and warm, with separation, and all the stuff you’d expect. It’s Only Rock’n’Roll is so echoey and disjointed it sounds like a dub version – like the band are playing underwater – and the sound doesn’t improve until Miss You , 11 songs later.
This is something mentioned in several accounts of this tour – that things pick up with Miss You – as though the Some Girls disco-stomper, in which black-haired Darryl Jones brings the power with a showboating bass solo and a groove as tight as a chihuahua’s chuff, wakes up the rest of the band (or maybe their sound engineer who suddenly remembers, like a cook who’s forgotten to add salt: “Bass! That’s what we’re missing!”)
Still, the wonky sound, has an unexpected upside: The effect, weirdly, is to turn the whole thing into one big interactive, crowdfunded social media event-cum-singalong. This is not a passive, sit-down-and-lap-it-up type gig. Everyone is singing, videoing, filming themselves singing, dancing like a maniac. Two really stoned people are pretty-much shagging in the aisles. Which brings us to…
4. The audience
We all know the Stones’ story arc: they were mad fer it. Out of their heads. Brian lost in a fog of pills and acid. Keith on the coke and riding that wild horse. Charlie getting on the speed and the smack much later in life. Ronnie the incorrigible boozer, user and rehab regular. Mick: giving it all up and hitting the gym when it got in the way of business. (Bill Wyman? Knee deep in hymen.)
And now they’re all clean (or at least, clean ish ). And there's the irony: their audience are absolutely mullered . Like: totally fucking leathered, to a man (and woman).
They are playing to a stadium of the stocious, the slaughtered and the totally shitfaced, the bladdered and blootered, the legless, the mortalled and the miroculous. Half of these people don’t know if it’s New York or New Year. Tonight, the good people of Coventry are completely cunted .
I mean, look at this lot: they’re in a crossfire hurricane, alright, but it was sponsored by Heineken, JD and Coke and red berry Strongbow.

After the gig we spill out into a convention centre below, full of bars and a weird kind of Britpop bloke-rock disco. The music is like a Freshers Week Ball in 1996 – which might also be the last time this lot were on a dance floor.
(Hey, I’m not judging. We were as bad. There were two us, but we were having 4 drinks a round. The next day, my mate Steve wakes up with his (massive bald) head covered in blood and scratches. I was with him all night – neither of us have any idea what could have happened to him.)

5. Mick Jagger’s patter is rotten
When it comes to arse-wiggling, hip-shimmying and pointing, Jagger has got it nailed. He's the man. He can do them all at once and everything. But, considering he's been fronting one of the highest-grossing bands in the world for decades now, Mick’s between-song-dialogue is, well, pish.
Mick has discovered Wikipedia and he’s not afraid to use it. “It’s great to be in Coventry!” he shouts, in Coventry, “the jewel of the West Midlands!”
Yeah, brilliant, cheers Mick. Always good to remind the locals of where they live in the kinda language you’d find in a local council brochure. He may as well have had his phone in his hand as he said it or started a Powerpoint presentation of local places of interest.
“It’s so great that the Sky Blues are on their way up again!” he shouts to a limp cheer. (The Sky Blues = local football team Coventry City who won a Wembley play-off the week before to reach League One.) When he tries praising “the Wasps” (Coventry’s rugby team), there is a pause and then actual boos.
He’s not witty or warm or even weird. He’s like a visiting dignitary, who’s knocked up some opening remarks in the toilet.
I mean, c’mon. Throw us a bone here, Mick. Give us a little insight into what you’re actually like. Or make some stuff up, whatever works. Failing that, get a man in to write some stuff.
6. The Stones in the #MeToo era
Lyrically, Brown Sugar is still a confusing race-and-rape fantasy (initially sung from the POV of a rapist slaver, then seemingly delighting in the idea of the ‘house boy’ shagging the ‘Lady of the house’, before revelling a fantasy of a ‘Cajun Queen’ getting it on with 16 year-old boys) but a quick straw poll in the office reveals that most people just think it’s about Mick having a thing for black women.
Which goes to show ya: when you have that riff and the bit that goes I-say-yeah-yeah-yeah-WOH! you can get away with anything.
Jagger has said he wouldn’t write it today, because a) he’s not daft and b) because the worst thing he can imagine is being on “the wrong side of history”. To prove it, Gimme Shelter is accompanied by a video showing Black Lives Matter slogans, and singer Sasha Allen gets a load of screen time. She is the only person other than Mick and Keith to make it down the ego ramp.
Is it tokenistic? Well, they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t, aren’t they? But maybe, just maybe, The Stones have finally realised that #MeToo isn’t just something you say when joining in with a threesome.
*This can’t be true, of course: Charlie is well into his clothes. But he’s a man who knows how to look like a man. Dying your hair is for people who are kidding themselves on and Charlie don’t kid around. So Charlie looks in the mirror, not because he’s vain, but because he just wants to keep himself nice. And he is rigorous about what he wants to see. He does not want to look like a prick. Hence: grey hair. It’s what happens to your hair when you get old.

Rolling Stones Dazzle at ’24 Hackney Diamonds Tour Kickoff: Review and Set List
The Rolling Stones kicked off their '24 Hackney Diamonds tour at Houston's NRG Stadium on Sunday with such age-defying splendor that one shudders to consider the details of their Faustian bargain.
Led by octogenarians Mick Jagger and Keith Richards , the Stones delivered an 18-song, two-hour set full of stadium-sized singalongs, along with a sprinkling of relative deep cuts and new tracks off last year's Hackney Diamonds .
You can see the set list below.
The band wasted no time whipping the 72,000-capacity stadium into a frenzy with set opener "Start Me Up." Jagger leapt, spun and sauntered across the stage with a ballerina's grace as he barked with barrel-chested virility, and Ron Wood 's searing guitar solo slashed through Richards' sturdy riffs. The frontman summoned the righteous indignation of yesteryear on "Get Off of My Cloud," while "Rocks Off" bristled with pompous, sleazy decadence.

Although they could have easily filled a two-hour set with roof-raising hits, the Stones opted for a slow burn, giving the Aftermath gem "Out of Time" (first played live in 2022) its Houston debut and winning a spirited singalong by Jagger's sheer force of will. "I don't think you really knew it, but you get to know it," the frontman snarked afterward.
Another Houston debut — Hackney Diamonds lead single " Angry " — followed, one of only three new songs performed, along with "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" and the live debut of "Mess It Up." Each received a hit-worthy reception, proof that the Stones' latest LP achieves a hip modernity without straying too far from their bawdy blues-rock roots.
Glueing the operation together was the Stones' ace touring band, particularly drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Darryl Jones, who maintained a precise, urgent thrust on each song. The duo made room for Jagger to vamp continuously and allowed Wood and Richards to keep their playing loose. The latter, a picture of a rock 'n' roll Dorian Gray, varied in lucidity from song to song, but held it together for his lead vocal turn during a raucous rendition of Tattoo You 's "Little T&A," unveiled for the first time since 2016.
By the time the Stones reached the sinister boogie of "Sympathy for the Devil" (whose Roman temple stage design was the most dazzling of the evening), they had the crowd in the palm of their hands. A marathon of hits in the second half — "Gimme Shelter," "Honky Tonk Women," "Miss You," "Paint It Black," "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" — kept them at a fever pitch until the house lights went up.
There will come a day when the Stones can no longer deliver their one-of-a-kind stadium spectacle, but the end appeared nowhere in sight at the '24 Hackney Diamonds tour kickoff. No use trying to put an expiration date on them; they've long since shattered every notion of what a rock 'n' roll band can achieve, and at this point, they're competing only with themselves.

The Rolling Stones to bring tour to New Orleans in May
by Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Last month, The Rolling Stones released “Hackney Diamonds,” their first album of original material in 18 years.
Tuesday, the legendary English band announced they’re taking it on the road.
Starting on April 28 in Houston and concluding in Santa Clara, California, on July 17, the Stones will make their way across the U.S. and Canada.
The tour hits 16 major cities, including New Orleans, Las Vegas, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago, Los Angeles and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Fans can expect to experience the Stones’ most popular hits as well as new tracks from “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s “best new work in decades,” as The Associated Press’ Jocelyn Noveck wrote in her review of the album. She argues the 12-song collection is “tight, focused, full of heart and swagger.”
The Stones last performed across the U.S. in 2021 for their No Filter tour, marking the first time the band had toured without drummer Charlie Watts since 1963. Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections, died in August 2021. He was 80.
Tickets for the Stones’ North American Hackney Diamonds tour go on sale on Dec. 1.

Maroon 5 was right: Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger still has the 'Moves Like Jagger' at 80
Nearly 15 years after the hit Maroon 5 single, Mick Jagger has still got the moves.
The Rolling Stones frontman took to Instagram last week to show off his famous dancing while Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" played out in public.
"Moves like who !" Jagger, 80, captioned the video , featuring the rocker flailing his arms around at the cameraperson during a live cover of the 2011 track.
Jagger's son Lucas Jagger commented, "Dadda WHO PUT U UP TO THis," while others were excited for the band, credited as Splash, to have Jagger himself in attendance for the performance.
Jagger moved freely in what appears to be a bar in Mustique, St. Vicent and the Grenadines. The British rock star has a history of showing up at bars and going relatively unnoticed. In 2021, Jagger hit up a North Carolina bar ahead of a performance and no one seemed to recognize him, to the delight of social media .

Rolling Stones set to tour together
The singer will no doubt have the moves on tour with the Rolling Stones, who are setting out on their latest stint on the road later this month, six decades after their first tour.
Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood will embark on a 19-city tour kicking off April 28 in Houston to support their well-received 26th album, " Hackney Diamonds, " and plug into their extensive hits parade.
The stadium tour, sponsored by the age-appropriate AARP , will also hit cities including Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. The band will detour on May 2 to play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
The band premiered songs from the album at an intimate, invitation-only show of a few hundred people at the Racket NYC club in October, running through a handful of visceral new tracks and leaning into classics including "Shattered" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" with youthful vigor. Lady Gaga, who sings on the album track "Sweet Sounds of Heaven," joined Jagger for a thunderous duet .

Linkin Park Unveil Emily Armstrong as New Co-Vocalist, Announce 2024 World Tour and Album
- By Larisha Paul

A new chapter in the story of Linkin Park is among us. On Thursday, the band announced plans to embark on a headlining tour beginning kicking off Sept. 11 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, marking their first run of live performances since the death of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017. Moving forward on the road without him also brings in the addition of a new co-vocalist, for which Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn, and Dave Farrell have selected Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara. Colin Brittain, songwriter and producer for G Flip, was also announced as the band’s new drummer.
Linkin Park also shared their first new music in seven years, “The Emptiness Machine,” which premiered alongside a livestream performance to announce their new album, From Zero , slated for release on Nov. 15.
Linkin Park first began teasing the announcement last week. On Instagram, the official band account shared a video of a countdown that starts at 100 hours and begins ticking away. They followed it up with another countdown, this one starting at zero seconds, increasing to nine, and immediately jumping back down to five before the video completely distorts. “It’s only a matter of time …” the caption read, along with a link to their website.
The site’s landing page hosted a message of its own: “Be part of something. Tune in.” The next teaser used the same statement in its caption, this time with an accompanying image that seemed to feature the logo Linkin Park began using in 2007.

Even around that time, the band was thinking about how to move forward. “[Chester] had such a specific tone and range – an incredible range. He could sing almost any style you wanted him to. That led to conversations about what to do next,” Shinoda said. “It became obvious that you can’t just hire some schmuck to get up there and sing with us, ’cause they won’t be able to hit half the stuff.”
