New Report Finds ‘Surge’ in Corporate Attention To Religious Diversity

Cece winans sings ‘goodness of god’ on ‘american idol’ finale, wife and daughter of chiefs ceo speak out on motherhood amid harrison butker controversy, ihopkc’s forerunner church holds final sunday service amid mike bickle sex abuse scandal, pastor married to porn star pleads guilty to ‘violent’ sex crimes against his sister, ‘journey to hell’ is a faith-based movie that aims to change hearts and lives.

journey to hell

When it hits theaters this Friday (August 5), “Journey to Hell” will sound a clear and frightening warning to anyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus Christ. The faith-based movie , delayed several times by the pandemic, offers a glimpse into what awaits non-believers in the fiery underworld.

Director Timothy Chey says the movie has a two-part goal: to help people “understand how real hell is” and to have “many people coming to Jesus .”

‘Journey to Hell’ Is Based on a John Bunyan Allegory

John Bunyan, author of the classic 17 th -century allegory “ The Pilgrim’s Progress ,” provides the inspiration for “ Journey to Hell .” In the film, a man named Shane Badman (who thinks he’s a Christian) dreams about hell during a near-drowning. The terrifying experience makes him realize he had been a Christian in name only. When Badman recovers, he dedicates his life to Jesus.

In interviews about the movie, Chey says he “changed the ending to make it completely uplifting” because “no one would go [see the movie] if it’s just about a man being in hell.”

The trailer for “Journey to Hell” shows Badman wandering a flame-covered landscape, encountering notorious figures such as Judas Iscariot, Nero, and Adolf Hitler. Viewers see glimpses of a prosperity preacher , someone saying no “magic prayer” guarantees salvation, someone claiming hell is an “old-school fundamentalist belief,” and someone quoting this Old Testament warning: “Remember him—before the silver cord is severed” ( Ecclesiastes 12:6 ).

Badman (played by John Terrell) eventually acknowledges he is “just a filthy sinner” who needs Jesus Christ. When he regains consciousness, he thanks God for sending his Son. He also admits he deserves hell but promises to start praising and living for Jesus.

Can You Scare People to Faith?

Promotional materials for the movie note that only about half of Americans believe in a literal hell. Chey says “Journey to Hell” will alert lukewarm Christians to change their ways. Then on Judgment Day they won’t hear Jesus say, “I never knew you; depart from Me” ( Matthew 7:22-23 ).

The director notes that in the Bible, Jesus speaks about hell more than heaven. And the film’s trailer features Charles Spurgeon ’s warning that “ Hell is filled with almost-saved people.”

Chey says he thinks we’re living in the last days, and he describes himself as “a firm believer” in the Rapture . “Only the Rapture will rescue [God’s] church before the seven years of tribulation that will come on the entire earth,” he says.

Blame After Last Season, maybe. I never got to be one of the few, the proud, to see that incomprehensible trainwreck in cinemas, and I have never actually seen it, because I so envied the perhaps-suspecting but nonetheless wholly unprepared audiences for the brainbreaking experience they had, and I knew a home viewing could never compare.

So when I discovered Internet schadenfreude-watch trailer sensation Journey To Hell was making what appeared to be its debut across a few cinemas in Denver while I was in town, I envisioned a similar experience: a film full of conviction, entirely lacking in talent, creating a cinematic singularity.

Alas. It's true that Journey To Hell has more (much more) than its share of risible…

A fearmongering fundamentalist propaganda movie about a churchgoer who dies and gets sent to hell because he didn't love Jesus enough? Okay, fine. But why does that movie need an extended sequence in which our protagonist in hell meets Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, and "the CEO of the tobacco company"?

Without the inexplicable presence of a star/good actor like Malcolm McDowell, Timothy A. Chey's ineptitude as a writer-director really shines. It's not as consistently batshit as something like Fateful Findings or even Ben & Arthur , but the competence and production value are(n't) there, and there are enough wonderfully disorienting moments (Mao Zedong doing kung fu, a demon fawning "This is the smartest, most clever human being I have ever met" over the Zodiac killer) to make this one fun for a hate-watch.

Between Hitler, The Las Vegas shooter, the Zodiac Killer, and the Columbine kids this truly is the most ambitious (and most hilarious) crossover in human history. Absolutely deranged filmmaking.

Occasionally, in moments of weakness, I seek out recently-made evangelical propaganda movies. I have a few thoughts on this one, and I plan to inflict it on friends and family.

- Pay the guy who played actual Mao Zedong a million dollars. Right now. - Once a month, one of my friends shows me their new boytoy with exactly the same delivery that Legion the Demon uses while introducing Judas Iscariot to the protagonist. Make of that what you will. - Please picture a hard cut to the most normal, accountant-esque guy you've ever seen saying "I'm the Zodiac Killer! 😙" right now. - I do not advocate watching this entire film. I do, however, implore you to watch the…

This movie is the worst garbage fire of a movie I’ve seen. It’s also not so bad it’s good it’s just legitimately bad. Also, a lot of it is in poor taste especially some of the people that show up in hell.

It is a breed of Absolute z-grade unaware Christian filmmaking I thought the Evangelical market moved away from in recent years. Every filmmaking choice more puzzling than the previous one. There are laughs at every corner and everytime the paradox of them showing an actual big expensive house to shoot on set and then transitioning to a green screen inside of a church had me roaring.

I also feel the need to share my favorite YouTube comment on the upload that I cannot even discern if it is unironic or not "I love this movie and find it very relatable. I wasn't in Hell but I was in Newark, NJ, which is very similar."

Share All sharing options for: What time does Hellblade 2 release?

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 continues Senua’s journey as she heads to the mythical island of Iceland. After the events of Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade , Senua is a lot more at peace with her Furies, but the world is still full of monsters both all-to-real and quasi-fantastical.

Hellblade 2 is a deliberately-paced, brutal, extensively mo-capped, narrative-driven adventure that picks up a bit after Senua’s Sacrifce . It’s just as deeply rooted in psychology and psychosis as the first game, but the real star is the way Ninja Theory made use of Unreal Engine 5 to deliver one of this generation’s first real next-gen moments. “There’s nothing else quite like it,” is how we put it in our preview back in April.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 comes out on Xbox Series X and Windows PC on May 21. Here’s what time Hellblade 2 releases in your time zone.

'Yellowstone's Kevin Costner Told Taylor Sheridan to Kill Off John Dutton

Costner had a pretty dire solution to the issues facing the series.

The Big Picture

  • Kevin Costner extended his Yellowstone contract, but faced challenges balancing it with his Western film Horizon .
  • Costner offered to be killed off Yellowstone to address scheduling issues amid conflicts with the production team.
  • Despite difficulties, Costner remains open to returning to Yellowstone if given the right conditions.

In a wide-ranging and enlightening GQ interview , Kevin Costner has voiced some serious truths about his tumultuous time with the hit TV series Yellowstone , revealing the depths of his commitment to the show despite ongoing disputes with its production team. Known for his portrayal of the rugged patriarch John Dutton, Costner’s dedication to the role has been unmistakable , having extended his initial three-season contract to five seasons amidst the series' success. However, the journey hasn't been without its hurdles. Costner discussed the challenges he faced balancing the demands of Yellowstone with his ambitious project Horizon , an epic Western feature he hoped would complement his role on the series.

Horizon represents Costner's passion for filmmaking, a sweeping narrative set against the backdrop of the American frontier, scheduled to release in two parts in June and August 2024. The crux of the conflict arose when Yellowstone 's production schedule began to impede Costner's ability to work on other projects. Faced with delays caused by factors including COVID, writers' strikes, and scheduling conflicts , Costner found himself increasingly frustrated:

“We very rarely started when we said we would and we didn’t finish when we said we would... I was okay with that, I really was. I was okay with it, but it wasn’t a trend that could continue for me."

Kevin Costner Offered to Be Killed Off of 'Yellowstone'

In a candid revelation, Costner shared that he even offered a drastic solution to help resolve scheduling issues with Yellowstone — his own character’s death. “And so then at one point they said to me that we don’t have an ending or anything,” Costner said. “I said, ‘Well, if you want to kill me, if you want to do something like that,’ I said, ‘I have a week before I start. I’ll do what you want to do.’”

Despite his willingness to compromise, Costner felt that the production's leadership and Paramount did not adequately defend or support him in the public eye, leaving him to contend with a very difficult narrative that painted him as a roadblock to the show's progress.

As the saga unfolds, Costner remains open to returning to Yellowstone under the right conditions, his attachment to John Dutton undimmed by the controversies. His story highlights the complex nature of television production and the personal stakes involved for actors deeply invested in their roles. Production on Yellowstone 's final season is now underway in Montana . Stay tuned to Collider to see if Costner joins them.

'The First Omen' Is Compared to 'Dante's Inferno in New Sneak Peek [Exclusive]

  • A new featurette details how The First Omen draws inspiration from Dante's Inferno .
  • The featurette explores the thematic structure, setting of Rome, and behind-the-scenes details of creating the horror experience.
  • Director Arkasha Stevenson plans to expand the Omen franchise with potential exploration of the demonic entity Jackal in future films.

Dante Alighieri 's legendary "Inferno," the first of three parts making up his epic poem The Divine Comedy , has served as inspiration or a direct reference for countless stories across all mediums for its depiction of Hell and the journey closer to God. In 2024, the concept of descending into the depths of despair and sin was once again invoked for The First Omen , director Arkasha Stevenson 's prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen . Starring Nell Tiger Free , the film follows an American nun-in-training named Margaret who arrives in Rome, only to find her faith challenged as she uncovers a conspiracy to bring about the Antichrist. Ahead of the film's digital release , Collider can share an exclusive sneak peek that sees Stevenson drawing comparisons from Margaret's quest to bring the evil to light to Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell.

The featurette, titled "Structuring the Film," begins with an anecdote from Stevenson about arriving in Rome to film on the exact 750th anniversary of Dante's Inferno. It was fitting, then, that they planned for The First Omen to follow a similar structure, beginning from Margaret's warm welcome at the orphanage before her roller-coaster descent as she investigates the wicked conspiracy among the church's radicals. Rome was the perfect setting in the director's eyes, given the widespread presence of religious iconography that gives off a religious aura while also creating anxiety that there are always eyes on Margaret. To amplify that, she also made certain that hushed whispers and conversations could often be heard in the background, adding a feeling that something more sinister was freely occurring just beyond the camera's view.

The First Omen 's arrival on digital will bring with it plenty more behind-the-scenes goodies exploring all aspects of the horror feature's creation . "The Mystery of Margaret," for one, focuses on Free's character's journey to prevent the arrival of Damien, with her castmates Bill Nighy and Maria Caballero chiming in along with Stevenson. The director also provides a window into her process and how her debut feature was made to expand on Richard Donner 's original with "The Director's Vision," while "Signs of the First Omen" explains the symbolism, costume design, effects, and more that help give the film its haunting atmosphere. With homages baked into Stevenson's vision and some truly disturbing sequences, the featurettes aim to provide a peak into the mindset behind every creative decision.

Who Else Worked on 'The First Omen'?

In addition to directing, Stevenson also co-wrote The First Omen with her writing partner Tim Smith alongside Keith Thomas while the story itself comes from Ben Jacoby . They had an all-star cast to bring the prequel to life, with Free, Nighy, and Caballero joined by the MCU's new Galactus, Ralph Ineson , as well as Sonia Braga and Tawfeek Barhom . Although the film's box office performance left much to be desired, Rotten Tomatoes has the title at a Certified Fresh 81% score with high praise from critics for how Stevenson and the team tied things together with The Omen while remaining inventive with the horror. Collider's Ross Bonaime gave the film a 7/10 in his review, saying "Stevenson's debut feature is a smart handling of horror with imagery that won't soon leave your mind, elevated by an uncomfortable performance by Free."

Assuming another Omen film follows Stevenson's revitalization of the franchise, the director has some ideas about where it could go. In an interview with Collider's Perri Nemiroff , she expressed interest in covering the Jackal , a demonic entity that plays a major role in conceiving the Antichrist and represents a connection between the afterlife and the living world in the franchise. There are still mysteries surrounding the monstrous being and the larger process behind ushering Damien into the world that leave the door open for exploration if the ending is any indication .

The First Omen comes home on digital on May 28, followed by a streaming release on Hulu on May 30 . Blu-ray and DVD copies will be available starting July 30. Check out our exclusive sneak peek below.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Review - Hell And High Water

  • First Released May 21, 2024 released

Hellblade 2 is perhaps the most visually remarkable Xbox title to date, but is ultimately undermined by its emphasis on fidelity over story and gameplay.

By Jessica Cogswell on May 21, 2024 at 1:00AM PDT

When Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was released in 2017 it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. I beat it in one sitting and remember feeling thankful that I had played it in a room dark enough to conceal how much I wept as the credits rolled. As a young woman who had endured abuse and was desperately wrangling with her own mental health and attachment issues, Senua's journey resonated and comforted me in a way no other game ever had. So it might surprise you then, that when I heard Ninja Theory was working on a sequel, I was extremely hesitant.

My biggest concern--particularly after Microsoft purchased Ninja Theory--was that the next entry in the Hellblade series would aim to be one of the massive, AAA experiences that are taking over the games industry, complete with a cluttered mini-map, crafting, side quests, and more. That's not to say these features are inherently bad of course--they do have their place--but to me, this felt at odds with what Hellblade did so well. I didn't want breadth, I wanted the series to maintain its depth ; I wanted emotion, art, storytelling, introspection, mythos, terror, and magic. In fact, I was so concerned that the studio would trade in its depth for breadth, I didn't foresee what actually happened.

Rather than expanding its systems and scope, or weaving a story equal parts intimate and mystical, Senua's Sage: Hellblade 2 focuses on vastly improving what its predecessor already did so well: visuals and sound. Hellblade 2 is a marvel to look at. It's gorgeous, cinematic, and hyper-realistic, yet still eerie and ethereal. Its music remains extraordinary, and its sound design is primed to make your skin crawl. And yet, I cannot help but be disappointed by how pared down and shallow its story and gameplay are. While Hellblade 2 might be a sight to behold, its minimal gameplay and muddled narrative prevent it from being a game that has any meaningful impact on me.

Senua struggles to regain her footing on a rocky beach.

Senua's Saga picks up not long after Senua's Sacrifice, and follows our heroine as she sets off to confront the Northmen who keep raiding her lands and enslaving her people. She sees this not solely as a chance to do what's right, but as a way to atone for the sins she is still convinced she committed--a way to wash off the blood that she can't help but see on her hands. However, Senua soon discovers that vengeance is not so simple, and a decision that condemns and brutalizes one group could mean safety and survival to another.

It's a simple plot that is ultimately executed in a way that lacks richness. Yet there are certain themes here that carry it a bit further. First and foremost--and as every therapist will tell you--progress is not linear. Exploring Senua's reintegration into society and how her mental illness impacts that process is an interesting concept. Despite her being in a better place by the end of the first game, she is not miraculously cured of her trauma or the inner voices that manifested as a result of it. In fact, she is still largely fearful of herself and plagued by the guilt her father instilled in her. I appreciate that this comes through in her newest journey, too.

Additionally, Hellblade 2 hones in on compassion in a way that is not novel, but tender nevertheless. Between Senua's companions assuring her that her empathy and unique way of seeing the world is a gift, to the game's overall emphasis on trying to understand the "man behind the monster" in order to heal them and stop cycles of violence, there are some calls for kindness here that are always worth hearing. I appreciated the game presenting conflicting ideas on morality and reformation, and while it did frequently delve into the old saying "hurt people hurt people," it also made clear that people always have a choice and that pain is not an excuse for cruelty.

And yet, the themes fall a bit flat. I suspect it's largely due to the game's dialogue, narration, and Senua's voices, which never reach the same level of poeticism or introspection as they do in the first game. The voices in particular often come across as a distracting novelty. And sure, it can be argued that anxiety and trauma is distracting, but if that was the artistic choice Ninja Theory was going for, that sense of turbulence doesn't cut through. Instead, I was left frustrated that Senua's internal monologue became this simplistic bit of noise that only truly offered up either affirmations or self-flagellating remarks--some of which seemed to counteract all her previous lessons learned in a way that felt less like nonlinear progress and more like a lack of narrative cohesion.

Senua surrounded by fire.

But while the voices felt too simple, the game's narration felt overly obtuse, featuring legions of words said all to convey very simple messages that are then repeated dramatically time and time again. All this comes on top of the fact that this game adds a cast of supporting characters who talk over and under these other voices, leading to writing coming across as muddled and tedious, and ultimately lacks the same sense of artistry exhibited in the Hellblade 2's audio and visuals. I also suspect that some of this would have been easier to forgive if the game's story beats were bolder, more intimate, less repetitive, and less predictable, but Senua's Saga ultimately commits to being an aesthetic and cinematic spectacle at the expense of telling a profound story that takes both Senua and the player to new heights.

This is a problem that rears its head again when examining Hellblade 2's gameplay, which is substantially more frustrating than its storytelling. While playing through Senua's Saga, you will primarily do three things: walk, solve puzzles, and fight. In theory, that should be enough to make a player feel like they are playing a game--I mean heck, strip down Zelda and it's basically the same thing, right? Yet Hellblade 2 reached points where it felt more like I was watching a slightly interactive movie. The majority of my time felt spent crawling through caves or walking along beaches, and infrequent puzzles and simplistic combat kept me from feeling any sense of relief, connection, or satisfaction with the game.

And sure, I've heard it argued that the original Hellblade's puzzles and combat were nothing extraordinary--I'd say that's fair, as the game primarily focused on deep, introspective storytelling. But considering Hellblade 2 doesn't have that, I had some hope new and improved mechanics might lie in store for us. Instead, things have been pared back. Just about every battle is the same: you face off against an enemy, parry their attack, press a button to kill them, then engage with the next one. Whereas in the previous game you had to navigate the field, manage multiple enemies, and could kick and fight a bit more dynamically, all of that has been cut in favor of circling around a single enemy until you can get in a parry.

It's clear that the reason for this new combat system is to make battles more scripted and cinematic, as it's easy to incorporate tense moments, rolls, combos, dramatic deaths, and more when the player is limited to hitting a couple buttons against a single opponent in a very small space. But the big problem here--well, other than the combat itself--is that several games have proven that fights can feel choreographed and cinematic while allowing players to engage with enemies in more meaningful ways. Combat in Hellblade 2 feels not just like an afterthought, but virtually non-existent. In fact, I'd argue that the end result feels similar to a quick-time event, yet more tedious.

Senua engages a draugr in combat.

Solving puzzles is just as simple a process, and mainly consists of finding ways to distort reality in order to gain access to new areas and vantage points. From there, you will find hidden runes that aid your progress. It's slightly less tedious, but none of the puzzles scattered throughout the game are particularly engaging or difficult, meaning you never feel challenged or particularly satisfied with yourself.

This isn't to say Hellblade 2 is devoid of any remarkable features. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more visually striking first-party Xbox title. From its lighting and framing to the hyper-realism of its characters and locations, every bit of Hellblade 2 feels cinematic and spectacular. Whereas its story and systems could use some love, it is abundantly clear that these environments--from the animal skulls that adorn dilapidated houses to the towering mountains and vast oceans that extend past where the eye can see--were completely adored by the team. Similarly, the game's motion capture and performances are next-level, with each of the game's main cast bringing a level of melodrama and tension to the game that elevates a script that is otherwise a bit flat and predictable.

The game's sound design and music are perhaps even more notable. Though the most obvious praise is leveled at the game's binaural audio, there are so many other elements that come together alongside this choice that elevate it. The deep groans of rotting buildings and shrieks of villagers in pain are so realistic they feel palpable. Senua's up-close and breathy panic inspires instant tension, while far off, guttural singing strikes fear. Though the combat itself might be subpar, the music that plays while Senua faces off against the draugr is intense and riveting.

Senua looks out at a mountain over a lake.

But while few games can rival Hellblade 2's sound, graphic fidelity, and talent for rendering stunning vistas and characters so expressive you can tell when they're tensing their jaws, I couldn't help thinking how gorgeous the game would be if what was depicted was more varied. There are a few memorable set pieces I won't spoil, but even compared to its predecessor--which led players through tombs, razed towns, haunted woods, chamber halls, and let them face off against giants, a rotting boar, towering stag-headed monsters, and the god of illusions--there is surprisingly little variation in Hellblade 2's settings and monsters. Though the caves Senua crawled through succeeded in inducing the claustrophobia the game warns you about at its start, large chunks of the game taking place surrounded by stone isn't entirely appealing. It's yet another substance problem in a game that is regrettably full of them.

Based on its new naming convention, the use of "saga" in Hellblade 2's title, and Microsoft's acquisition of developer Ninja Theory following the success of Senua's Sacrifice, it seems as if Hellblade is slated to be a series as well as a staple in Xbox's first-party lineup. That said, at this point, I don't exactly understand where the series is headed, if not to the box office. There are plenty of games that prove games can be art, but as some studios lean harder into proving that in one specific way that cribs from Hollywood, we're seeing some games that feel afraid of being games . With too much focus on cinematics and too little on creating an experience that is engaging, Senua's Saga fails to reach the same highs as its predecessor--even if it does look stunning whilst trying.

  • Leave Blank
  • Impressive visuals, motion capture, and performances make for a striking cinematic experience
  • Music and overall sound design triumph at elevating tension and emotion
  • Shallow, muddled storytelling falls short in offering a unique or introspective experience
  • Extremely minimal gameplay with simple puzzles and flat combat
  • Set pieces, encounters, story beats, and gameplay quickly grow repetitive

THE COFFEE TABLE, (aka LA MESITA DEL COMEDOR), David Pareja, 2022. © Cinephobia Releasing / Courtesy Everett Collection

The poster for the innocuously named “ The Coffee Table ” notes that it is “A Cruel Caye Casas Film.” The unique designation is certainly fitting, given the storm of controversy it’s stirring up among horror fans. The comically vague logline for the Spanish film —  new parents buy a coffee table that will change their lives forever — hides a shocking incident that happens early on. Said incident is not for the faint of heart, and director and co-writer Casas is eager to not only lean into the controversy but take willing audiences on an emotional journey of horror without monsters or the supernatural. Without spoiling the central incident, Casas explained his film to Variety , including how much he wanted to push audiences, the unique title and how he reacted when Stephen King recommended his work. (Note: This interview was conducted over email for accuracy between the Spanish and Catalan-speaking Casas and the English-speaking author.) How did the idea for this film come about?

Popular on Variety

Who do you think the audience for this movie is? Are there some people who wouldn’t be able to handle it?

I have always thought that the film is aimed at audiences who want strong, extreme, unforgettable emotions. The horror audience is like that. I am a member of the horror audience and my great hope is to make them suffer, have a terrible time, hate me, but above all make them feel strong emotions. Now many productions are made with a lot of money that don’t make you feel anything, which is always the same, that you forget about them two days after seeing them. I think that “The Coffee Table” makes anyone who sees it feel an unforgettable experience, whether they like it or not. In fact, it is not for everyone, there are people who will not tolerate it, and I understand that.

What have audience reactions been like so far? Have you seen walkouts?

People’s response has been fucking incredible. I have gone to many festivals with the film, to many countries, and people always react by being shocked, they can’t believe what they see. Some leave the room, they can’t stand it, but there is also laughter about it. Black humor, the most macabre laugh, others feel guilty for laughing, but the majority have a very bad time, tension, anxiety. It is very fun to see the faces of the audience. In Mexico, they insulted me while watching the film. It was a joke, but they insulted me for torturing them — although, later, that same audience gave me the audience award at the Macabre Festival.

As a filmmaker, were you trying to show empathy for any of the characters, or just portray the events neutrally?

All the characters have something personal, they have something of mine, all of them. With these characters, I wanted to convey how any of our lives can change in a second, we can experience real hell and we don’t need monsters or zombies or anything to live in hell. Let everyone judge the characters as they want, I don’t, they came from my head and there is no one that is my favorite. What is important is that only the protagonist and the audience know what has happened, and that makes the tension unbearable, it makes the audience suffer as much as the protagonist, and that is what works like a time bomb.

How did you decide how much of the key incident in the movie you wanted to show onscreen?

I was clear that I did not want to make a gore film, and I was clear that imagination is an important weapon that the public has. Why show certain things when in your thinking it could be worse? You have to make the viewer’s mind work, sometimes less is more, and imagining what is happening is sometimes stronger than seeing it. It was very clear that some scenes were going to be shot out of frame, so that they could be seen as little as possible, the audience already knows that what happened is horrible.

There is lighthearted music playing during some dark moments. What was the inspiration behind that juxtaposition?

To be contradictory. When a great tragedy happens, sometimes it is better not to play the typical scary music and instead play a children’s song, as in this case. It is more disturbing, and with the composer of the OST, Bambikina, we were clear that we did not want to make the typical horror movie soundtrack, because this is not the typical horror movie. It’s different from everything, and the soundtrack had to be too.

Did you always have the ending in mind while writing the film?

What was the inspiration behind naming the film, simply, “The Coffee Table”?

All horror movies have powerful, dark, scary names. I wanted to make a terrifying film but with a harmless, ridiculous, everyday name… “The Coffee Table,” and in Spanish, “La Mesita Del Comedor.” Seriously, is a movie like that, that disturbing? The answer is yes. I also wanted to trick the viewer, I’m going to watch this movie with this silly name, and wham! They are left speechless. Besides, it is clear that the coffee table is the main protagonist of the film… don’t you think?

Do you want to focus on more horror movies and dark dramas in the future?

I have several projects for which I am looking for money. I have a very terrifying, unbearable, brutal but also philosophical one that would make horror audiences’ heads explode. It is titled “Dreams” and it is brutal. I have others that are incredible black comedies, so that people have a good time laughing at death, like a movie called “Bad Death.” Another cruel and macabre horror titled “Welcome,” another about a really disturbing television show titled “Luciferio.” But I also have films that are not 100% genre, like “Nothing Co” (which is one of my favorite stories) or “Mom’s Wish,” which is an original and different comedy. I like almost all genres, but I have a great time writing horror. Now the important thing is to find financing so that they exist and the public has fun… Is there anyone interested?

Stephen King tweeted that he loved the movie. What does it mean to have a horror master praise your work?

There is only one King of Terror, and that is Stephen King. What more can I say? That the King recommends your film to his audience, that he says that it is the darkest thing he has ever seen… It’s so exciting, it’s one of those things that I will explain to my grandchildren (although I don’t have children). It’s one of those things that you think will never happen and it does. The King has recommended an independent Spanish film shot in 10 days at a friend’s house and with a ridiculous budget. And not only the King has done it, but also teachers like [director] Mick Garris, who was the one who sent the film to Stephen King because he loved it. It’s an orgasm. I won’t tell you that I masturbated watching the King’s tweet talking about my movie (did I?), but I will die with a smile on my face just thinking about it.

“The Coffee Table” is now available on VOD. Watch the trailer below.

After unexpectedly receiving her late husband’s war pension, she takes it as a sign and sets off to Paris to buy a dress of her own.

Upon arriving and visiting the Dior store, she befriends André (Lucas Bravo), the Dior accountant, and Natasha (Alba Baptista), a Dior model. While on her adventure, she inevitably changes her own outlook on life as well as the future of the House of Dior in ways no one expected, least of all Ada.
