Last year, I came across a situation quite similar to the one you’re facing now. I had to catch the 7-Night Greece & Adriatic Cruise departing from Ravenna (Venice), Italy. I was quite confused about the nearest airport to fly to Ravenna, Italy. 

Luckily, I have got the best option to reach Ravenna cruise port, and in this article, I will share my experience with you to save you time and expenses.

Closest Airport To Ravenna, Italy?

So basically, there are two major airports in Ravenna, Italy; Federico Fellini is located in Rimini (RMI), and this one is about 60 km away from Ravenna. From there, you have to grab a taxi that will take you to the Ravenna cruise port in 20 minutes. 

But unluckily, Federico Fellini airport is not a suitable option for International travelers. Like if you’re traveling from North America, you won’t get any direct flight to this airport. 

Instead of Federico Fellini, the best airport option in Ravenna for international travelers is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ), which is around 80 km away from Ravenna.

But if you’re traveling from the USA, Getting a direct flight to this airport will be easy. 

If you’re someone living around Italy, France, Monaco, Andorra, Milan, or Slovenia, the Federico Fellini airport is a suitable option. It operates some obscure domestic & International airlines like Virgin Nigeria, Flexflight, Air Berlin, Alitalia, etc.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport To Ravenna Cruise Port?

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi is a small but excellent airport to fly, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. There are not so many amenities at this airport, but you can grab a cup of coffee or a bite of famous Italian Pizza. 

Ravenna cruise port is 86 KM away from this airport. From there, you have three options to get to the cruise port– train, bus, and cab. The bus and train will get you to Ravenna town, not directly to the cruise port. However, I believe both options are more cost-effective than taking a taxi.

I like the bus option. To hop on the bus, you have to first get the train. Luckily, the train station is just a few minutes walk from the airport. Grab the train to Bologna Centrale, and from there, get a bus to Ravenna.

Finally, grab a taxi to reach the cruise port. It’s a straightforward and economical way to get there.

Federico Fellini Airport To Ravenna Cruise Port?

This airport is not minimal and is located in Rimini, also known as Rimini Airport. Once you have landed here, you have three options to get to Ravenna: bus, train, and taxi. 

There is a 70 km distance between Rimini and Ravenna, and It will take you 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Ravenna town. Once you have read there, simply get on the taxi to reach the cruise port. 

You don’t need to walk miles to grab a train; luckily, the Rimini train station is a few minutes from Federico Fellini Airport.

Rimini is one of Italy’s iconic spots, one of the most photogenic and vibrant places, I guess. If you have a couple of extra hours, I suggest exploring the “Arco di Augusto” and seeing the bustling life of the seaside of Rimini. 

Why You Shouldn’t Consider Venice Cruise Port?

Unfortunately, Venice port banned cruises that are over 25,000 gross tonnage. In March 2023, they passed this law, and now most of the major cruise lines sail from Ravenna, the nearest cruise port to Venice. 

I wish the Venice government could lift this so that I could also explore the heritage of Roman empires and some of its major attractions. 

You might wonder why not consider the airport in Venice instead of Bologna Guglielmo Marconi.

I know everyone desires to explore the iconic beauty of Venice, but there is no cruise port for giant cruise lines there. That’s why you must head over to Ravenna Cruise Port, which is 209 km from Venice Airport. 

But if you have plenty of time, you have the freedom to visit Venice and explore its beauty.

I regret not visiting Venice because I landed directly in Ravenna on embarkation day. But if you’ve got an extra couple of days, you should catch a flight to Venice and make some memories there.

But now I’m dead set on it; next time I plan a Mediterranean, Turkey, or Greece & Adriatic cruise, I’ll opt for Venice airport over Bologna Guglielmo Marconi. From there, I will leave for the Ravenna cruise port for my cruise voyage. 

Should You Stay In Ravenna, Italy?

Ravenna has a rich history; it’s a pristine and peaceful city with some historic architecture. You will encounter stunning mosaics, UNESCO World Heritage sites, vibrant streets, and some of the best ocean views here. 

I recommend you stay here for a couple of days. There is also a sightseeing canal, the Candiano Canal, that connects this Italian city to the Adriatic Sea. The beautiful quaysides and natural charm are worth seeing in Ravenna. 

During my last trip to Ravenna, I enjoyed a night at Casa Masoli Hotel , a fantastic accommodation with abundant amenities. I discovered this gem through the booking.com app, which offers many lodging options in the area. Ravenna boasts numerous other accommodation choices that you can find via this convenient app.

What Are Some Of The Attractions Worth Visiting In Ravenna? 

If you’re sailing from a Ravenna cruise port, I’d recommend arriving a couple of days earlier to soak up some of the historic vibes in the city. You know there are so many iconic architecture and fabulous mosaics from the ancient Roman and Byzantine periods. 

The first in Ravenna you should visit is Basilica di San Vitale; this Church holds attractive architecture. So many eye-catching mosaics, designs, and old paintings will make your eyes pop out. 

Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is another beautiful church that is painted with mosaics. There is also a medium that showcases the Romans’ traditions and lifestyle. This Church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine mosaics, which adorn the interior walls.

Further, the Old Town of this ancient city is also worth seeing. This town’s vibrant and bustling streets are very photogenic; here, you can capture some photos for memorabilia. The famous Ravenna Umbrella Street is in this town; the colorful hanging umbrellas are worth seeing. In addition to that, you can also savor some of the best Italian brunches and pizzas. 

Best Time To Visit Ravenna?

The best time to visit Ravenna is between April and June and between September and October; during these times, the weather is very comfortable, and one can easily explore the beauty of Ravenna. 

Spring seasons feel much more pleasant here, and I often book cruise itineraries during these times. Also, the historic colors of this Italian city become more vibrant during these summer times. That’s why I recommend you visit Ravenna in the summer rather than fall. 

How Big Is Ravenna Cruise Port?

The Ravenna cruise port is not too busy like the Ancona cruise port. But luckily, it’s just a 20-minute walk from the city center to the cruise port. Several major cruises depart from this port, like Royal Caribbean , MSC, Carnival , etc. 

The Ravenna Cruise Port is the go-to spot for cruisers heading to Venice. Many private transfer and car rental services offer direct travel to Venice.

If you’re a group of friends willing to divide the fare, I strongly recommend you go for a private transfer to save time. 

There is nothing so enjoyable at the Ravenna cruise port. Even the cafes and restaurants are located at quite a distance. So the best option is to grab a shuttle bus service from the port and move to Ravenna town.

Large cruise ships have not docked in Venice since the pandemic, and the Ravenna cruise port is the new gateway for Venice cruisers. If you’re flying in, Bologna Airport is the closest airport to the Ravenna cruise port. It’s just an hour’s drive from there to the port.

So, if you’re even planning for a Mediterranean cruise or any cruise that sails from Ravenna, the nearest airport to it is Federico Fellini Airport. But if you’re an international traveler or want more flexible airlines, consider using Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. Both these airports are nearer to the Ravenna. 

I suggest taking off a few days before your cruise to explore Venice because this city is a dream destination for every travel enthusiast. And from Ravenna, it’s just 143 kilometers away, about a 2-hour drive. 

Alternatively, if you’re flying for Ravenna cruise port a few days before your cruise adventure, you can go directly to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE). From there, you can begin your arduous expedition to uncover the beauty of Venice, and then, from there, you can move towards the Ravenna cruise port.

Ravenna is not on most people’s radar when it comes to a cruise port or cruise destination. In fact, it’s relatively new that the city has been chosen as a departure/arrival port since Venice has banned large cruise ships (for the most part). The Ravenna cruise port is primarily used by Royal Caribbean & Celebrity Cruises at the moment but is expected to accommodate more cruise lines in the near future.

We made our way down to the Ravenna cruise port via Florence and spent several days exploring the city as well as documenting everything possible about transportation options, hotels, and things to do for cruise passengers (both departing and arriving). Quick Tips for the Cruise Port in Ravenna, Italy

A few things to know right away about Ravenna & the cruise port:

• The city center is about 20 minutes from the actual location where cruise ships dock
• The city has less than 20 taxis, plan transportation in advance (more on that below)
• The Ravenna train station is only a 7-minute walk to the city center +/-
• Make sure you have WhatsApp installed on your phone to communicate with hotels & car services. This is the preferred method of contact for most local companies.

The most common question is: is ravenna the port for venice.

Venice has its own port, but has stopped allowing large ships in the lagoon / center – so Ravenna has been chosen as an alternative (as well as Trieste, Italy for some cruise lines)

Ravenna sits on the east coast of Italy on the Adriatic Sea only about 1 hour from Bologna and 2 hours and 20 minutes from Florence by train. So many people ask: is Ravenna Cruise Port in Venice? The first thing I have to say, this is NOWHERE NEAR VENICE! I hate the fact that Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines call cities like Ravenna “Venice”. When I see cruises advertised as a cruise from Venice, it just drives me insane. 

In fact, it’s so far from Venice that oftentimes people book flights into Marco Polo airport (Venice) and realize they still have another 3-hour bus ride to the cruise ship. Ravenna is located closer to Bologna and Florence than Venice. Look at a map, I beg you. THEN make your flight arrangements. Unless you really want to spend time in Venice before or after a cruise, do NOT book flights to Marco Polo Airport. 

The actual port which is Porto Corsini is slightly outside of the city.

About the Ravenna cruise terminal

The cruise terminal which is actually Porto Corsini is a 20-minute drive from the city center. The terminal itself is basically just a tented building that accommodates only 2 ships at a time keeping the city from being completely overrun by tourists. The terminal is primarily used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

How far is Ravenna city center from the cruise port?

It’s important to know that the cruise terminal in Ravenna, Italy is not really in the city. It’s about a 20-minute drive by bus, car, or taxi from Ravenna city center to the actual cruise ship dock. 

Getting to the Cruise Ship Terminal (Porto Corsini) from Ravenna

This is the single most important bit of information we can share. There are very few taxis to just ‘flag down’ and get to the cruise terminal, so planning ahead is ESSENTIAL. 

The cruise lines are really bad at communicating how to get to the ship from the city. 

Private Transfer

Some hotels will offer a private car for about 50 euros but do not RELY on this without having booked this directly with your hotel, or knowing if it’s even an available option with the hotel of your choice. 

Otherwise, the VisitRavenna website is available to book a minivan with designated time slots and pickup points (most common hotels). The starting price is 20 euros per person or 30 if you have extra luggage (per person). See the Minivan transfer option here.

Ravenna Cruise Port Shuttle 

If you arrive at the Ravenna train station on the day of your cruise departure, there are representatives from the cruise line guiding guests to a paid shuttle bus. If you’ve not made arrangements for transportation, you can get on one of these buses for approximately $15 per person, usually billed to your shipboard account. The attendant (in a yellow vest with a cruise sign) will take your details and pass them to the ship for billing.

IMPORTANT: Celebrity and Royal Caribbean are horrible with providing information about getting to the cruise ship from the city or train station! In fact, when we called Celebrity Cruises asking about how to get to the ship from Ravenna, we were instructed to go to the Bologna airport and pay for one of their very expensive bus rides BACK to Ravenna. They had zero information on a shuttle service from the train station. Mind-boggling. 

A good tip is if you are staying in Ravenna before your cruise and are staying near the train station, just walk over and get on one of their buses. It’s really easy unless you have a lot of luggage, which brings me to other local bus arrangements. 

Additionally, the tourism authority of Ravenna has created a booking system to schedule pickups from several popular hotels including the NH Hotel for only 20 Euros. This is a larger shuttle bus that makes only one stop at Grand Hotel Mattei and then directly to the port. To book in advance, visit the shuttle transfer booking page .

Taxis in Ravenna

Do not rely on a taxi to get to the cruise port in Ravenna. There are so few in the city that they are basically unavailable on cruise days unless prior arrangements have been made (which is usually only done through the hotels).

Getting from the Cruise Ship to the Ravenna train station (or city center)

If you are arriving in Ravenna and disembarking your cruise ship, the best, and really only option, is to take ship-arranged transport to either the city center, train station or your airport of choice. Due to the location of the dock and limited taxi service, it’s not possible to just flag down a taxi and head into town !

Parking at the Ravenna Cruise Port / Terminal

There is a relatively large parking lot that is nearly empty right in front of the ship and check-in “tent”. The parking is free, but be aware that it is not secure parking and doesn’t have any entry control.

What to do in Ravenna

Staying in ravenna before or after your cruise we think it’s a great choice for a day or two.

With  mosaics ,  mausoleums,  and  basilicas  everywhere you look, the Italian city of Ravenna is  full of history and culture . The city is small and quaint but with a surprising amount of activity and things to do. The city is primarily known for its stunning mosaics dating back hundreds of years. Additionally, the food and cafe scene is vibrant with no shortage of local dining options. If you’re spending a day or two in Ravenna before or after a cruise, the best option is to take that time and soak up the history with a mosaics tour (self-guided).

Don’t waste money paying for a cruise shore excursion to see the mosaics (they often charge 100 euros or more per person!). You can get a 12.50 euro ticket here .

TIP! For some of the locations, you are requested to show up at a specific time or timeframe so they can manage traffic in the smaller spaces! Pay attention to the time on your ticket. While they were not very strict at the entry points, it may have been because it was not as busy as in peak season. 

Important! Dress Code and Etiquette

When visiting Ravenna’s religious sites, such as the  Basilica di San Vitale  and the  Mausoleum of Galla Placidia , it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for the sacred nature of these places. Both men and women should avoid wearing revealing clothing and ensure their shoulders and knees are covered. This applies to both the interiors and exteriors of these religious sites. Basically NO SHORTS and NO TANK TOPS. 

Additionally, it’s important to be mindful of local customs and etiquette. Italians value politeness and respect. Greetings are typically warm and accompanied by a handshake. Remember to use “buongiorno” (good morning) or “buonasera” (good evening) when entering shops, restaurants, or interacting with locals. Learning a few basic Italian phrases, such as “grazie” (thank you) and “prego” (you’re welcome), can also go a long way in showing appreciation and respect.

How to get to Ravenna

Getting to Ravenna by train from any major city in the region is simple and affordable. From Bologna central train station to Ravenna, it’s only 8 euros and from Florence, it’s less than 50 euros per person (and that was using the high-speed / more expensive train between Florence and Bologna).

Additionally, cruise lines set up paid shuttle service from the main airports (Bologna and Venice).

Transport between Venice Airport and Ravenna

If you are traveling between Venice Airport and Ravenna, there are several transportation options available to you. The easy choice is to take a direct cruise shuttle from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Ravenna, which typically takes around 2-3 hours. Another option is to take a train from Venice to Ravenna, which involves a transfer to either Bologna or Ferrara. The train journey takes around 2-3 hours as well.  If you are spending time in Venice before a cruise that departs in Ravenna, you will likely end up having to return to the Marco Polo airport to get a cruise-provided shuttle. Otherwise, you’ll be on your own to get to Ravenna.

Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport – Cost & Time

Venice Marco Polo Airport is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of Ravenna. It is one of the busiest airports in Italy, offering a ton of domestic and international flight options. When traveling from Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport, you have several transportation options, including private car hire, taxi, shuttle service, and public transportation.

The travel time from Ravenna to Venice Marco Polo Airport by car or taxi is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The cost for this option is usually around €200 to €250 (budget $300USD for this, just to be safe). Cruise company-arranged shuttle services are also available, offering a more affordable option with a longer travel time of 2.5 to 3 hours. **NOTE** That these shuttles are usually only available the DAY OF THE CRUISE. The cost for a shuttle service is typically between €30 and €40.

The train journey from Florence to Ravenna takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, and the trains depart regularly throughout the day (with a change in Bologna).  Expect to spend 45-50 euros per person for the best schedule & most comfortable trains.

Ravenna to Florence Airport – Cost & Time

Florence Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Ravenna. It serves as a gateway to the beautiful city of Florence and the surrounding region. When traveling from Ravenna to Florence Airport, you can choose between private car hire, taxi, shuttle service, and public transportation.

The travel time from Ravenna to Florence Airport by car or taxi is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The cost for a private car is usually around €150 to €200. Shuttle services are available as well, offering a more economical choice with a travel time of 2 to 2.5 hours. The cost for a shuttle service is typically between €35 and €45. Cruise company shuttles will only be available on the day of the cruise. There are several transportation options available for travelers looking to make the journey between the two locations. The most popular and efficient mode of transport is by taking a direct shuttle bus from Bologna Airport to Ravenna. The shuttle service operates regularly throughout the day, making it convenient for travelers to catch a ride to their destination. The journey typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions. For those looking for a more private and convenient option, hiring a taxi or arranging a private transfer is also a viable choice. The taxi ride from Bologna Airport to Ravenna takes approximately 1 hour and can be a more flexible and comfortable option for travelers with specific timing or preferences. Additionally, there is a train service available from Bologna to Ravenna, with the journey taking around 1.5 hours. (This is our personal choice, as it’s easy and inexpensive)

Arriving at the Bologna Airport? Take the airport Monorail (Marconi Express) from the airport to the central train station. The monorail runs every 7-8 minutes with a cost of 11 euros or a family ticket for up to 2 adults and 3 children for 22 euros (one way). 

Then board a train to Ravenna ! (Tickets can be purchased at the station or in advance)

Ravenna to Bologna Airport

Bologna Airport, also known as Guglielmo Marconi Airport, is approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Ravenna. This is a great option to fly in and out of for a cruise to/from Ravenna! Unless you have a real desire to go to Venice, look at Bologna Airport as the arrival or departure for your cruise. Trust me on this! It’s so much easier and more convenient. The journey from Ravenna to Bologna Airport can be easily completed by car, taxi, or shuttle service.

If you prefer the convenience and privacy of a car or taxi, you can expect a travel time of approximately one hour, depending on traffic conditions. The cost for this transfer option is usually around €100. You’ll be quoted €120-€150 – don’t be afraid to haggle, you’ll usually get the ride for about €100. Alternatively, shuttle services are available, providing a more affordable option with a slightly longer travel time of around 1.5 hours. The cost for a shuttle service is typically between €25 and €30. The best choice is to use a cruise company shuttle for this transfer.

Where to stay in ravenna.

Ravenna is quite small with most accommodations being Bed & Breakfast style hotels. If you prefer a more corporate or chain hotel, there is an NH Hotel within a minute’s walk of the train station and a few minutes from the center of town, however the area immediately around the hotel is not as “nice” as staying more central.

Best time to visit ravenna:.

Ravenna experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and hot summers. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller compared to the peak summer months. This allows for a more relaxed exploration of the city’s attractions. We were fortunate enough to embark on one of the last cruises from Ravenna in Late October and experienced perfect weather.

Is Ravenna Worth Visting?

Absolutely! The history, art, culture, and mosaics make this a great day (or two) trip.

Taxis at Ravenna Cruise Port

Don’t count on it, but you may be able to get one if a taxi is dropping someone off. There are fewer than 20 taxis in the city, which is why the cruise companies run shuttles between town and the port.

Does Royal Caribbean (and Celebrity) have a shuttle bus transfer from the airport in Venice to the port?

Yes, you can book transfers on the day of the cruise. 

How safe is Ravenna, Italy cruise port?

Are there car rental agencies at the Ravenna cruise port?

Fran – There are no rental cars at the port. Your best bet is to take the cruise shuttle into town and walk to one of the few agencies that there are. There are no facilities of any kind at the actual port (or taxis unless you get lucky)

Hi Donna, there really aren’t any taxis or cars to get from the port to the city center (I think there are like 12 in the whole city). I’d be EXTREMELY surprised if NCL doesn’t have a shuttle! Even if it’s a paid “excursion” like Ravenna on your own, or something like that. Since there is no way to get into the city.

Please call NCL and find out what they are doing for that port! It would be pretty shitty if you have to pay for an overpriced excursion to get into the city – but these days, nothing would surprise me.

Great information Phil! We are cruising from Ravenna in June. After back and forth with our hotel (Hyatt Centric Murano in Venice, (who have been very responsive to my queries!), we were armed with several choices – including private car – to transfer to Porto del Ravenna. After calling Celebrity, we were offered two departure transfer times, 9.00 am and 11.00 am, on the cruise departure day from Isola Nova del Tranchetto in Venice. The cost is $58 USD per person. They also offer one departure from Marco Polo airport, but one has to be there between 11.30 and 12.30, with a possible departure of 13.00! Regards, Jim McKay

How about from Milan? I am planning to tour Milan before getting into Ravenna for cruise

Hi Janet, I know a few people that have toured Milan ahead of a cruise in Ravenna. We almost did it but chose Florence instead. You can get the train to Bologna then onward to Ravenna. It’s probably worth going a day in advance just to be 100% safe given the trains can *sometimes* be a bit flaky (pretty rare, but it happens). Private transfer will be quite expensive, but it’s possible if you want to go the day of the cruise. Expect to spend a few hours in a car and spend a couple hundred euros per person.

Any tips on parking a car at the port?

Candace, Thanks for asking – I’ll add this into the article. There is an open lot right at the terminal / check in. It’s quite large but it’s not a secure lot. It’s free, just pull up and park.

My family and I are coming into Ravenna Port on Royal Caribbean in May, 2024. We want to go into Venice and stay one night. As you were saying we did not realize that Venice is so far from Ravenna Port. There are 10 of us, 4 kids under 16 and 6 adults.. What would be the easiest and most affordable way to get there. I have looked at Viator for a private car but I am trying to figure what be best. I am 72 with some limitation on walking. Thank you for your help. please send your respond to my email.

Hi Suzanne, arriving in Ravenna, I would actually get the cruise company shuttle to Venice or Venice Airport (Marco Polo) and head into the city from there by private taxi or train. The cost of a private transfer for that many people from Ravenna to Venice would be quite a lot! You may even need two shuttles (and expect to spend 600-1000+ per shuttle). So the best way would be getting as close to Venice by the cruise ship transportation / bus as you can. You didn’t mention where you were leaving from (Are you leaving from Marco Polo? or Rome?) If you’re leaving from Rome (or even Bologna), honestly, I’d skip Venice. The time and cost it takes to get there for a single day/night may not be worth it. If you’re leaving from Marco Polo (Venice) – You’ll need to get there anyway (again, best by cruise shuttle)… I hope this helps a little! Just keep in mind the 4 hour drive to get to Venice would limit your time a lot if you’re not leaving from Marco Polo.

The new dock is located at the Porto Corsini waterfront, between the yacht marina, the beaches and the pine forest. A beautiful natural setting that perfectly matches with the cheerful and vibrant atmosphere of Marinara, the biggest yacht marina of the Adriatic sea. Next to the cruise ship dock you will find a beautiful beach and a small town. During siesta (1pm-4pm) the town however closes completely. If you take the small ferry (1 euro) from Porto Corsini to Marina di Ravenna you can visit the Marina and a few fish restaurants. The port is at least a 20 minute drive from Ravenna. Shuttle (sometimes free) buses are run between the port and the city. Taxis are around 20 euro one way. A few taxis are available.

You will be able to walk to the beach from the dock.

In 2024 a new terminal will be built by RCL Cruises Ltd. The new cruise terminal will showcase integrated landscaping, spanning 12 hectares, with public green spaces, pedestrian and cycling pathways, and entertainment areas for residents and visitors.

Best airport to fly in when sailing out of Ravenna

Hello Fellow cruises,

My wife and I need a little help for our cruise to The Greek Islands and Turkey next October. I understand that the ship is sailing out of Ravenna Not Venice ,so we were wonder what is the closest airport to  Ravenna we can fly into .How Long is the drive to the port ,what is the best way to get there with luggage and possibly and good mid range hotel to stay at . We are going to fly in a day or so before.  We  can fly into Venice but it seems like a long drive from there to Ravenna to catch our ship The Constellation, I am also aware that Celleb. offers transportation at a cost to get from Venice to Ravenna is it worth it ? I know its allot to ask but just trying to figure out the way with the least amount of hassle and travel time,any help would be appreciated.

If you don't want to fly into Venice, Bologna would be your next best bet for an airport.

Bologna is probably the closest airport, but is still a distance from Ravenna. In addition to distance you may also want to consider availability of good flights and where you want to spend pre-cruise time. 

I am on Constellation in October and for now Celebrity is offering transfers from both Venice and Bologna airports as well as from Venice itself. Cost per person from Venice is $58. Unless you can put together shared transport on your roll call, you're unlikely to find anything much cheaper.

When faced with the Ravenna issue you might want to turn an inconvenient problem into a plus.  While Bologna is somewhat closer (about half the driving time) we think that Venice is worth the extra driving time for most folks.  Having been to Venice many times we find the island (and other islands in the lagoon) a fun area for browsing, walking, enjoying the fabulous atmosphere, etc.  While Bologna is worth a 1 or 2 day visit, it is not Venice :).  So we suggest that folks consider flying into Venice (Marco Polo Airport) at least 2 days prior to their cruise and enjoying the region.   If you have more days, one could plan a nice driving or train trip ending at Ravenna.  

As to exploring Venice, once folks get St Marks Square (one of the most touristy spots in Italy) out of their system they can start to explore all that Venice has to offer.  A trip out to Burano can be delightful and would easily fill a half day (longer if you couple it with a visit to Murano).  For those who have never visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum it is a wonderful place for a couple of hours.   Another option, with a few extra days, for opera lovers is to spend an evening (and perhaps overnight) in Verona in order to enjoy an outdoor Opera performance at the Arena di Verona (the largest opera venue in the world).  This does require advance planning as performances do often sell out.

I've wanted to get to Bologna for years but never seemed to have a good reason or plan to visit. The Ravenna sailings provide a good opportunity to spend a couple of days in Bologna and then at least one full day in Ravenna (also well worth the time).

I have two lasting memories of our 3 night visit to Bologna (years ago while on a driving trip).  1.  The Colonnades.  and #2.  The gypsy lady that did her best to pick my pocket at high noon in one  of the busiest squares in the city!  And yes, we foiled the lady (and I hope she still has the bruises).  Suffice it to say that it is a city for which we have no future plans to visit :).

I just spent several days with Bologna as my base.  I also always wanted to get to Bologna.  Not just Bologna, but a quick train ride gets you to Modena, Parma and Reggio Emilio for foodie fun.  Get adventurous and rent a car for a day and go to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello (I loved it).  Have a mortadella sandwich at Mo! Mortadella Lab.

I hear you -- but if those were my criteria I'd never re-visit Rome, where on my first (adult) visit, a band of gypsy kids surrounded my then DH and I and attempted to take DH's wallet -- right in the middle of the Spanish Steps -- using a piece of heavy box cardboard jammed against his waist to keep his hands away from his pants pockets. Being a street-savvy New Yorker, he did not take kindly to this and the attempt was foiled but not without me being in fear that one of more of those kids were going to go tumbling down the Spanish Steps!

I am blessed to have a DW with a 6th sense when it comes to pick pockets!  Like most frequent travelers we have learned to take routine precautions that have served us well for over 40 years.  We have never had any issues in the more common places like Rome, Barcelona and Athens.  The attempts we remember (all foiled) was the one in Bologna (where I had to get physical), a young boy in Arles, and another young guy in Istanbul (a comically bad attempt at purse snatching).  We have watched others have their purses snatched in Barcelona (some ladies still think its OK to leave a purse under their seat).

With mosaics , mausoleums and basilicas literally everywhere you look, the Italian city of Ravenna is full of history and culture . From World Heritage Sites to culinary delights featuring fresh seafood, there are so many reasons to visit Ravenna. It really isn’t as bad to miss Venice as you thought.

Where exactly is Ravenna located?

Ravenna is located in the northern Italian province of Emilia Romagn a. This is a beautiful region of seaside resorts, and historic towns, and is renowned for its incredible Italian gastronomy.

You can combine a trip to Ravenna with other destinations in Emilia Romagna, including the beautiful cities of Bologna and Cervia . It is really worth exploring the full richness of the region so we definitely recommend staying here for one or more nights before or after your cruise.

The great thing about Ravenna is that you can take it easy in this picturesque town. Wander through the late Roman and Byzantine architecture, take a trip to the coast, or take a day trip to the surrounding areas.

Whether you’re in Ravenna for just a few hours or a few days, there’s plenty to do in Ravenna.

Here’s a rundown of reasons why Ravenna isn’t a bad place to visit just yet, to inspire you and still be happy when your cruise starts here.

Ravenna’s Beautiful Basilicas

There is a huge amount of historical and religious sites in Ravenna. Many beautiful early Christian mosaics have also survived the history of this city and can be found in buildings. While religious architecture may not be high on your bucket list for a fun day out, these magnificent sites, such as the Basilica of San Vitale , are well worth checking out.

This incredibly beautiful basilica is a fine and beautiful example of early Christian Byzantine art and architecture in Europe. While the exterior may seem a bit drab, the interior is r ich in dazzling mosaics. So be sure to go inside!

Today it is also used as an atmospheric concert space during the Ravenna Festival . If you happen to be in town during this event, you’re in luck. It is a very special experience to sit in the silence of the church and listen to a ‘live electronics performance’.

There are numerous other churches and basilicas of historical and cultural importance in Ravenna, including the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo . I think my favorite was the Basilica di San Francesco . It may look like a simple place of worship, but it has the most delightful hidden little quirk.

Under the altar is a dark crypt that is lit up when you contribute 1 Euro. When lit up, you’ll see a historic tile floor that has been completely flooded with groundwater and populated by goldfish . When was the last time you saw a makeshift pond in a church? I think it’s worth a euro.

The UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Ravenna can be visited with a combination ticket which currently costs €9.50 (per adult).

Cycling along pine paths

For the more active reader, you can book a bike tour in the nearby town of Cervia that leads you through peaceful pine forests with a heavenly real Italian scent . You can start along the Cervia promenade and then cycle towards the shady pine forests.

The trails through the forest are well maintained and there are several scenic spots along the way, including ponds, dunes, reeds, and traditional fishing huts.

It feels quite wonderful to whiz through the Italian landscape on two wheels with the balmy wind blowing past your ears. Many locals will greet you with “Ciao” as you continue cycling. It really is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon and of course, you see more of the area than on foot.

If you like cycling, you can also cycle in Ravenna itself. There are many cycling routes that lead from the center of Ravenna to the sea and the countryside.

Driving on the A14 highway (Bologna – Taranto): take the exit for Ravenna , then drive towards Lidi Nord and follow the signs for Marina Romea – Porto Corsini. Once in Porto Corsini, drive along via Po and turn right to enter the area of the port.

FROM THE SOUTH

Driving on the A14 highway (Bologna – Taranto): take the exit for Cesena-Nord and follow the E45 freeway to Ravenna. Take the exit for Lidi Nord and follow the signs for Marina Romea – Porto Corsini. Once in Porto Corsini, drive along via Po and turn right to enter the port area.

You can get to Ravenna thanks to the various regional railway lines: Ferrara – Rimini ,  Bologna – Rimini and Faenza – Rimini .

To reach the Cruise Terminal from the railway station, choose a transfer from viale Farini (next to Piazza Anita Garibaldi, 300 m away from the station) or bus n. 90 to Porto Corsini (bus stop 500 m away from the terminal).

How to spend one day in Ravenna, Italy

With many ships now being moved from ports in Venice to Port Corsini in Ravenna, you have the opportunity to spend one day or more in Ravenna before or after your cruise.

It was the Roman emperor Honorius who once claimed Ravenna as the capital of the western Roman empire. This small city boasts the famous Basilica of San Vitale and countless works of art in the form of mosaics.

Curious? Good, because it’s well worth a visit.

Placed firmly on the visitor’s map thanks to, among others, Royal Caribbean, Azamara, and Celebrity Cruises, with cruises from Ravenna to the Mediterranean or Greek Isles, Ravenna has long been a popular destination with Italians. Especially when visiting the regions of Bologne or Rimini.

Closest airports to Ravenna

If you prefer to skip visiting Venice and fly straight to Ravenna, for your cruise from Ravenna , the closest airports are Rimini (60km) and Bologna International (80km).

You can hop into a taxi at one of the official taxis outside the arrival terminal to get to your hotel. The journey time is around 1hr and 20 minutes, costing you about 150-180 euros.

Alternatively, book a private transfer . This is often more cost-effective if at least four people travel together. You get the bonus of having the driver meet you inside the terminal.

Travel by train to Ravenna

Ravenna has a busy train station with good connections with regional and fast trains. You can easily reach many major cities when you travel by train to and from Ravenna.

From Bologna airport to Ravenna by train

To travel by train from Bologna airport to Ravenna, you must first get the airport shuttle train, called the Marconi Express, to Bologna’s central train station.

The journey is only 15 minutes, and an ordinary ticket costs 11 euros for a one-way trip. Book on their website , or app or buy a ticket at the train station.

Alternatively, get a taxi from the airport to Bologna central train station, about 6km.

There is a direct train from Bologna Centrale to Ravenna . The journey time is slightly over one hour, costing around 8 euros per person.

From Rimini airport to Ravenna by train

If flying into Rimini airport, take a taxi to the main central station. You can get a direct train from Rimini station to Ravenna . Journey time is under one hour, and a one-way ticket costs 6 euros per person.

Visiting Venice before transferring to Ravenna

Most cruise guests flying into Venice airport want to see and experience Venice before transferring to Ravenna or Trieste ports for their cruise.

How to get from the port (Porto Corsini) to central Ravenna

If you are ending your cruise in Ravenna – often stated as Venice by the cruise lines but a town in itself 2.5 hours south of Venice, you are most likely using Porto Corsini. As always, check your cruise ticket for the exact name of your port.

Porto Corsini is a little seaside resort about 11 km from the center of Ravenna.

Local buses and shuttles to and from the port to the city center

Local public transport “Start Romagna” (bus line n° 90 – “Linea 90”) connects Porto Corsini to central Ravenna, stopping close to the main railway station. You will find the latest bus timetable here .

In addition, from 15th May to 30th October, port shuttle buses and minivans runs between the port and the city center. The journey time is about 30 minutes and costs 20 euros per person. You can book in advance via the Ravenna tourist office. They also have a telephone number on their website which you can use with What’s App.

Taxi or private transfers

Alternatively, there are taxis outside the cruise terminals. The journey time by car to central Ravenna is around 15 minutes in good traffic. The price of the taxi ride will be about 21 euros. Expect to pay about 26 euros if you travel later in the evening or at weekends.

Private transfers will be more expensive but ideal if you travel in groups of four or more and do not want to wait for a taxi or bus. Book so your driver is waiting when your ship arrives at the port. We recommend using a trusted supplier such as Viator or Scaioli . Expect to pay about 50 euros per way.

Storing your luggage for the day in Ravenna

If you are only in Ravenna for one day without staying overnight at a hotel, use the luggage storage facilities near the train station.

Perhaps you are taking an onward journey to the airport at Bologna at the end of the day or getting on an evening train bound for Venice. Whatever your plans, use the luggage storage in Piazzale Farini near the train station.

Parking options if you are driving to the port of Ravenna (Porto Corsini)

If you live in Europe and driving to the port in Ravenna, Porto Corsini, is an option, note that there is no private parking or garage in Porto Corsini. You can, however, park your car in one of these garages in Ravenna. 

These three options are the closest garages to bus route number 90, which stops on Via Maroncelli next to the train station.

Where to stay in Ravenna

It’s easy to visit Ravenna on a day trip, but we recommend you make the most of your time here by booking a hotel to enjoy the city and the friendly locals day and night.

We like the hotel NH Ravenna. It is right in the heart of historic Ravenna and only a 5-minute walk from the train station.

This 4-star hotel has 84 guest rooms, free wifi, and simple, fresh, clean rooms. Ask for a room on the upper floor for good views over the city. If you are a family and need more space, there are family suites or rooms with connecting doors.

There is a restaurant and cocktail bar at the hotel or several good restaurants nearby.

With English-speaking staff, an excellent breakfast buffet, and luggage storage facilities if your room is not quite ready when you check in, the NH Ravenna is ideal for your stay.

How to see Ravenna in one day

No less than eight ancient monuments in the historic city of Ravenna are UNESCO world heritage sites. But Ravenna, once the capital of the western Roman empire, is best known for its breathtaking early Christian and Byzantine wall mosaics.

Start the day at the train station, a central meeting point in the city’s heart. Walk past Giardino Speyer park towards the Arian baptistery, Battistero degli Ariani, located on Piazzetta degli Ariani.

From here, visit Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo on Via di Roma. It’s an easy walk and shouldn’t take about 15 minutes. This is your starting point for seeing the first Ravenna Byzantine mosaics and what must surely be the most beautiful in the world.

The best of Ravenna Byzantine and Christian mosaics

After you have been inside, continue your walking tour in this order before heading into the city’s center.

• Archbishop’s Chapel of St. Andrew, on Plaza Arcivescovado
• Neonian Baptistery (Battistero Neoniano) in Piazza Duomo
• Basilica di San Vitale on Via San Vitale
• Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, also located on Via San Vitale

The Basilica di San Vitale deserves a special mention among all the UNESCO world heritage sites. This is the most visited place in Ravenna to admire the mosaics.

Therefore, if you are pushed for time, make this your only stop from the list above. Built-in year 525, admire mosaics such as Voice of the Verb and The Emperor and the Lamb. The church is open daily except on Christmas and New Year’s Day, and the entrance fee is 10.50 euros per adult. We recommend that you book tickets in advance.

Next door to the Basilica di San Vitale, visit the National Museum to see the stunning collection of 14th-century frescoes. It costs a modest 6 euros entrance fee, and you can buy tickets online or at the door. In addition, if you are lucky enough to be there at the beginning of the month, the first Sunday offers free entrance.

The tomb of the poet Dante Alighieri

At the end of your visit to the beautiful Ravenna mosaics, walk towards the 700-hundred-year-old Dante’s Tomb, admiring the Byzantine architecture and baroque frescoes as you go. The legendary Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s tomb is next to the Basilica di San Francesco in central Ravenna.

Shopping, markets, and fairs

As you can imagine, Ravenna is packed with art shops featuring mosaics. Having gained inspiration, no doubt, from your morning of viewing the incredible mosaics in the historical buildings around the city, find handmade replicas of your favorite image to take home. Images depicting Roman history are popular, and the fantastic multi-colored mosaics are a great souvenir.

Many of these small artisan shops are in the main shopping street Via Cavour, Via Diaz, Via Cairoli, Via Corrado Ricci, Piazza del Popolo, Via IV Novembre, Via Matteotti, and Via Mazzini.

Head there in the afternoon and chat with the local artisans and mosaicists who skillfully recreate part of Ravenna’s history and the byzantine periods in their chosen art form.

Ravenna cuisine – where to eat

The Emilia Romagna region offers terrific gastronomic delights. Many of these can be found in the covered market in the city center. It’s also the perfect place to stop for lunch in the restaurant. We promise you won’t be sorry.

Located on Piazza Andrea Costa, the covered food market, Mercado Coperio, boasts food stalls with local cured meats and cheeses, an excellent restaurant for lunch or dinner, wine and food workshops, freshly made bread, and catch of the day straight from the coast.

It is one of the best food markets we have been to anywhere. Try the traditional Romanic dishes incorporating egg pasta and seafood.

Due to its location in the northeast of Italy, close to the Adriatic sea, Ravenna offers numerous possibilities to combine your trip with buck list destinations such as Florence, Bologna, and Venice.

A few steps from Dante’s tomb are the Rasponi crypt and the hanging gardens of the Palazzo della Provincia. Access to the crypt and garden is from the portico on the south side of Piazza San Francesco.

Neonian or Orthodox Baptistery

A mosaic depicting the baptism of Christ adorns the dome of this building, one of the oldest in Ravenna.

Brisighella Village

This medieval village, located halfway between Ravenna and Florence, is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

This university city is the capital of the region. Several medieval towers can be found in this city which is also known for its arcades listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

San Gimignano

This fortified medieval village is known as the City of a Thousand Towers.

Port Civitavecchia is the passenger (ferry and cruise) and cargo port of Rome City - Italy's capital and largest city. Civitavecchia is approx 80 km / 50 mi northwest of Rome. The Port's max daily passenger capacity is 40,000. Due to its vicinity to Fiumicino Airport, Civitavecchia is also the principal Italian homeport for major cruise line companies . Roma Cruise Terminal's busiest day so far was on July 16, 2016, when it hosted 10 ships.

The Civitavecchia-Rome train distance is 61 km / 38 mi (or ~50 minutes travel time). Annually, Port Civitavecchia handles 2000+ passenger ship calls (by both ferries and cruise vessels) and ~2 million travelers, ranking it Europe's 3rd busiest and the Mediterranean's largest. The city has population around 60,000 and covers an area of approx 72 km2 / 28 mi2.

The founding of Civitavecchia is set around 889 AD when the first inhabitants established Civitasvetula (old/ancient town) which was later changed into Civitavecchia. The Roman Emperor Trajan founded Port Civitavecchia (as Centumcellae) in the 2nd century. Due to its position, the city was prone to incursions by pirates and in 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned the building of a fortress for protection. Both Michelangelo and Bramante contributed to the design of Forte Michelangelo (1537-completed), which can still be visited today.

By the 17th century, following the embellishments carried out by its rulers over the years, Civitavecchia could boast of being one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ports. Unfortunately, most of the city's historical buildings and port were destroyed by the Allied aerial bombardments in 1943 (during WW2/1939-45).

The town of Civitavecchia and the surrounding towns and villages have a lot to offer to the visiting tourists, including the following Roman and medieval archaeological sites.

• The old hospital in Piazza Calamata, the fountain of Benedict XIV and the old city (around Piazza Saffi), which houses the Chapel of the Knights of St John.
• Forte Michelangelo (1535-completed) and its Bell Tower were designed by Michelangelo. The fortress is built on the remains of Roman army barracks.
• The Cathedral of St Francis (17th-century built by Francesco Navona)
• The Archeological Museum houses a large collection of Roman and Etruscan artifacts.
• Piazza Leandra has frescoes from the school of Raffaello Sanzio.
• Terme Taurine (open-air museum) was built on the site of Emperor Trajan's villa and baths.
• Finconcella's hot baths are from the Roman times and are still in use today.
• The Market is a must-see, with its surrounding taverns, coffee shops, and eateries offering foods made from local produce.
• Sant' Agostino beach is approx 15 km / 10 mi from Civitavecchia.

Civitavecchia has 108 hotels and B&Bs/Bed & Breakfast, as well as a number of good restaurants and pizzerias.

At ~20 min drive distance from the town tourists can visit the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri and Tarquina (known for its medieval towers, necropolis and the Etruscan museum). In Santa Severa bathers can visit the medieval castle. Bracciano (lake district) and Orsini-Odescalchi (castle and military aviation museum) are also worth visiting.

North of Civitavecchia you may visit the hilltop towns of Tolfa famous for one of Europe's major street artists' festival (Tolfarte) and its Butteri (cowboys) and Alumiere, famous for its palio (horse races), during which the town's districts compete in a series of donkey races. Other places of interest include Bomarzo with its Garden of Monsters (Giardino dei Monstri) and Civita Bagnorego (dying city). The historical papal city of Viterbo is an hour's ride from the cruise port. Ostia Anticha is one of the very best preserved Roman cities. Another place of interest is Sutri, with its mithreaum, a unique underground temple from the times of the Etruscans, later adopted by the Romans and then converted into a Christian Church.

Civitavecchia-Rome cruise terminal

Officially named "Roma Cruise Terminal", the facility was opened in 2007, and in the period 2007-2018 handled around 23 million cruise ship tourists. The Port currently has 5 cruise terminals (7 berths total) and can accommodate vessels with max draft 13,5 m / 44 ft.

The Port's cruise docks are Quay 10 (Terminal 10), Quay 11, Quay 12 South (Terminal Bramante/12S), Quay 12 North (Terminal Amerigo Vespucci, and Terminal 12 B North), Quay 13 South, Quay 13 North, and Quay 25 South (Terminal 25S). For homeporting are used 4 terminals (10, Bramante/12S, 25S, and Amerigo Vespucci/the newest).

The company Roma Cruise Terminal SRL (jointly owned by Costa Crociere , MSC and Royal Caribbean ) is responsible for the Port's cruise shipping operations. The terminal operator is currently ranked Europe's 3rd-largest and the world's 7th-largest in terms of annual passenger numbers and cruise ship calls.

The Port is used by ferries , cargo ships and cruise vessels. The distance between the Port Civitavecchia and Rome's international airports is almost 50 km (30 mi) or 50 minutes travel time (airport to the pier). Taxis cost ~EUR 160.

To go to Civitavecchia, most foreign cruisers first fly to Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino (airport) from where travel by train to Civitavecchia (for ship embarkation). Travel time is ~1,5 hours. From the rail station to the cruise port is approx 1 km (0,6 mi). However, the distance is easily walkable (along the pebbled beach).

At the Port's entrance, there are available three large car parks. Free bus shuttles serve both ferry- and cruise passengers. Be careful, as different shuttles go to different terminals.

In 2022 was inaugurated a new cruise terminal providing services to smaller-sized/luxury boutique cruise ships that increasingly use Civitavecchia as a homeport.

(NEW) "12 B North" Amerigo Vespucci Cruise Terminal

In November 2016, Port Civitavecchia started the construction of a new cruise terminal which was completed and inaugurated in 2018. The modern building (sized 10,000 m2 / 107,650 ft2) is able to handle ~4500 passengers and ~9000 pieces of luggage at a time.

Civitavecchia's main cruise terminal (Amerigo Vespucci) has capacity to handle the largest cruise vessels . The Terminal's passenger and luggage control facilities are at the ground floor. A crew room (also in the building's Atrium) facilitates the ships' crew reception process. Proceeding from the Atrium to the first floor, passengers reach the check-in area with 60 counters that can be doubled to 120 ports. Close to 90 monitors in the check-in area keep passengers updated on their check-in status as well as their itinerary and other useful information. There are also a VIP lounge, Cruise Bar and a large terrace. Ship boarding is via glass-enclosed passenger bridges.

A unique feature of the new cruise terminal Amerigo Vespucci is a small museum space housing Roman and Etruscan artifacts. The pieces are loaned by the Port's Harbour Master and the Superintendent for Fine Arts and Culture for Roma Metropolitana, Viterbo and Southern Etruria region as a standing testimony of Civitavecchia's historical status as the Port of Rome and the rich history of Italy's Lazio region.

The EUR 20 million project included building two terminals - the bigger "12 B North" and the smaller "Terminal 12". The building has a 280 m2 (3000 ft2) baggage claim area, a 410 m2 (4400 ft2) waiting area, large bus parking, taxi drop-off and pick-up area. On the ground floor are the passenger and luggage facilities (check-in with 60 counters and around 90 LED monitors for updated information / including on current itineraries). In the Atrium are located crew room and VIP lounge.

Terminal's address is "Civitavecchia, Molo Vespucci, Civitavecchia Italy 00053".

The Port's biggest parts serve container carriers/cargo ships and ferries. Cruise ships dock at piers Traianea (11), Antemurale Colombo (12,12B,13A, 13B) and Commerciale (25).

To the cruise port, take the Argo buses leaving from downtown/Largo della Pace (aka Porta di Citta). From the bus stop, you can reach the cruise piers (for embarkation) through the Port-provided free shuttle service.

Port Civitavecchia provides berthed cruise vessels with shore-power/electricity supply which reduces significantly the levels of emissions, noise and vibration. The "cold ironing" (shoreside power) is provided to ships docking at Tagliamento Quay (at berths 107-108 and 109-110).

The cruise port is accessible the whole year round - 24/7, 365 days a week.

Cruise ships usually arrive in Civitavecchia early in the morning (between 5 and 9 am) and depart in the evening (normally by 8 pm). Some ships may also stay overnight in Civitavecchia.

How to reach the cruise quays and terminals?

Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) is approx 60 km / 27 mi away from Civitavecchia. Once one arrives at the airport, reaching the Port is very easy.

Catch the direct train service from the airport to Ostiense (around 15 minutes) and then from Ostiense the train to Civitavecchia (allow 50 minutes of train travel).

From Rome City: There are two services (every hour) linking Rome with Civitavecchia. All the major train stations in Rome (Termini, Ostiense, Tiburtina, Tuscolana, Trastevere, San Pietro) are directly linked with Civitavecchia. Tickets and train schedules are available online on the Trenitalia website. There is a good service to major cities in Italy either directly or through Roma Termini.

Either from the train station at Civitavecchia, it is very easy to reach the port on foot (a distance of around 500 m / 1640 ft) or by taxi to the entrance of the port areas or via a shuttle bus service from the train, station (cost Euro 6.00 per person).

Disembarking passengers can book their transport with the cruise ships or else use the public taxis available on the quay. Roma Cruise Terminal also provides a free shuttle service to the coach terminus outside the port. There is a service to the train station at EUR 6 per person. Passengers can also book private taxis. Civitavecchia also has seven car parks providing a park and cruise service with a shuttle service to/from the cruise quays.

The bus stop closest to the port is the one located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. This bus stop is around 100 m from the south entrance of the port. The bus stop in Via XVI Settembre and at Porta Tarquina are around 200 m / 650 ft from the north entrance of the port.

The regional bus service is operated by Compagnia Trasporti Lazio (Co.Tra.L.). The bus terminus for these services is located in piazza Vittorio Emanuele near the south entrance of the port. A free shuttle service is available to transport passengers to their ship from Largo della Pace, the bus terminus located at the exit of the port.

Allow 40 minutes of travel time. There are parking areas situated inside or close to the port area. Most parking operators offer a shuttle service to/from the cruise ship.

Civitavecchia is a great place to spend some time. As this is the port of Rome, most of the passengers rush to see the capital city with its Colosseum, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, the Sistine Chapel and the Spanish Steps, but Civitavecchia has a lot to show too. It is among the most fascinating culturally cities in Europe. You can learn a lot about the Italian life and history. Among the interestins places are the old hospital, the fountain of Benedict XIV, the walls of the old city and quaint squares. Also you can visit:

• Forte Michelangelo: fortress dating since the 16th century. Pope Julius II commissioned it and in 1535 Giulano Leno finished it. Michelangelo designed the center tower. The walls of the fortress are thick over 6 meters and it is built on Roman barracks’ remains.
• The Cathedral of San Francesco d’Assisi: built on 17th Century church by Francesco Navona, an architect. The Cathedral of Cathedral of San Francesco d’Assisi is impressive with stained glass frescos and windows designed in Neoclassical-Baroque style.
• Civitavecchia Beach: this small beach has yellow sand (mixed with rocks) and is located opposite the railway station, just steps away from the seafront promenade.
• La Scaglia Necropolis (6th-5th centuries BC): take a look at the underground works in a chilling atmosphere.
• Civitavecchia’s Archaelogical Museum: the building was property of Pope Clemente XIII. It was made for the garrison of the pope and dates from the 18th century. There is Roman and Estrucan artifacts exhibition.
