PHOTOS: Pearl Jam delivers first Seattle concert in six years

Michael Rietmulder

With their savory  new “Dark Matter” album  in tow, the Seattle rock heroes wrap a quick spring North American run with a hometown two-nighter, playing Climate Pledge Arena for the first time. The current tour offers a bit of a fresh look for the band, which in keeping with Seattle’s grunge spirit, has long favored a more austere stage production. This time around, Pearl Jam’s embracing some bigger visuals inspired by the “Dark Matter” motif created by Tacoma artist Rob Sheridan , who last worked on stage visuals for Nine Inch Nails’ 2014 tour.

Pearl Jam’s first Seattle shows in six years kick off a series of anticipated homecomings this spring including Seattle expats La Luz (May 30, Crocodile), the final shows of the brilliant/brutal reunion tour from Tacoma mathcore destroyers Botch (June 14-15, Showbox), jazz guitar great Bill Frisell (June 13-16, Jazz Alley) and indie rock vets Car Seat Headrest (June 20, ZooTunes).

Pearl Jam left more than 18,000 attendees in awe after its homecoming performance at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday, May 28. As the first of the band’s two-night hometown series–which will close out the first North American leg of its Dark Matter World Tour–the 40-year grunge vanguard set an unforgettable show, complete with tour debuts, fan-favorite covers and a tribute to Bill Walton. The second performance of the series will take place tonight. The second performance of the series will take place tonight, launching the band into its European run.

In the course of the evening, Pearl Jam delivered 25 songs, artfully weaving through its sprawling discography with stone-cold classics and new entries. Among the most memorable moments of the evening was the band’s performance of “Man of The Hour” which they dedicated to legendary NBA Hall of Fame center and devout Deadhead Bill Walton, who passed away on May 27. The broader setlist paired live standards with tour debuts such as “Thin Air,” “I Am Mine,” “Satan’s Bed” and many more. The night concluded with a massive nine-song encore, including a staggering delivery of 1991’s Ten classic “Alive” with a tag of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower”–performed only 17 times by the group since 2008–with opening act Deep Sea Diver and the show-closing “Setting Sun.”

Tonight’s return to Climate Pledge Arena will officially mark the end of the first North American leg of the Dark Matter World Tour. The road warriors will ride again on June 22 in Dublin and will run through Europe until mid-July. The band will touch down in America for the second North American leg of the tour on Aug. 22, performing shows in August and September before concluding the tour with dates in New Zealand and Australia in November.

Pearl Jam brings world tour home to Seattle for two sold-out shows

Seattle's mayor officially declared May 28 " Pearl Jam Day " as the legendary hometown band brought their 'Dark Matter World Tour' to Climate Pledge Arena for the first of two sold-out shows.

It's been 11 years since the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers played under the KeyArena roof that now covers Climate Pledge Arena. Fans camped out early to snag a spot near the stage and score limited-edition merch on Tuesday.

Dark Matter , Pearl Jam's 12th studio album, has been well-received by critics and fans. It emotes feelings of longing, questioning, and finding one's own truth. The 2024 tour launched in Vancouver, B.C. on May 4 and weaves along the West Coast before heading overseas.

With a 30-year discography, Pearl Jam has opened with a different song on each night of the tour. This production is unlike previous tours, bringing fans closer to the stage and creating an intimate experience among an attendance of 14,000.

Pearl Jam's choice of Seattle indie-rock duo, Deep Sea Diver, as the opening act came as no surprise. Lead singer Jessica Dobson opened for the band as a solo artist for several shows last year.

Deep Sea Diver's energetic 30-minute set was a mix of hits from their decades-long catalog. Dobson's ethereal movements created a dream-like state as she softly sang their band's first song, "Lights Out." Switching gears, she skipped around for "Wide Awake." Dobson, illuminated in hues of red and green, smiled along with the crowd and gave thanks to the fans and Pearl Jam in between songs.

Pearl Jam started their 2.5-hour set almost completely in the dark. Cloaked in shadows, the band entered the stage in silhouette, led by lead singer Eddie Vedder and followed by Jeff Ament (bass), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Stone Gossard (guitar), plus the band's long time touring musicians, Kenneth "Boom" Gaspar (keys/piano) and Josh Klinghoffer (guitar, percussion, keys).

The multigenerational crowd screamed as the opening chords to "Release" began as the darkened profile of Vedder drank from a bottle of wine. If this was your first Pearl Jam show, you were in for a treat as the band played some of their greatest hits coupled with older tracks rarely heard live, such as "I am Mine,", "Satan's Bed" and "Man of the Hour," which was dedicated to Bill Walton, late Celtics basketball Hall of Famer and long time friend of the band.

Vedder paid his respects to another basketball great, retired Seattle Storm star Sue Bird. Standing under her retired jersey Vedder pointed to the arena's ceiling, saying: "This song is about a woman finding her own power. This song is called 'Waiting for Stevie.'"

There's always been a connection between Pearl Jam and sports. In fact, their debut album Ten was named after basketball great Mookie Blaylock. Vedder even pointed out those in attendance wearing #10 Sonics jerseys.

Vedder asked the crowd if they were tired and, "Do you need to get up early?" Then all the house lights came on and hands went up for the band's smash hit, "Alive." Personally, the song hits differently at almost 50 than at 17. Nevertheless, a truly cathartic experience; one of the moments where the whole crowd is one, singing with their neighbors, and all that matters is the music and being present.

After a quick wardrobe change, Vedder returned to the stage wearing a Seattle Kraken jersey and welcomed Deep Sea Diver back for an encore and the Jimi Hendrix classic "Little Wing," one of Pearl Jam's most popular covers and where lead guitarist Mike McCready's technical genius shines.

Before leaving the stage, Vedder spoke one last time to the crowd, "Let's make this an occurrence! See you Thursday!"

“Look At Us, We’re Home!” Pearl Jam Leaves Another Seattle Crowd Enraptured [Photos/Videos]

With almost 34 years gone by since the legendary band played its first Seattle show, Pearl Jam proved it can still sell out arenas and mesmerize audiences with an eclectic mix of old and new music. The band’s 25-song set leaned heavily into the ‘90s albums Ten and Yield , touching on almost the entire Pearl Jam discography and featuring eight new songs from the just-released album, Dark Matter . The local crowd erupted into joyous, nostalgic sing-alongs with every greatest grunge hit, and many a middle-aged man air-guitared an ageless McCready solo, but the swaying heads never stilled and the energy never lilted as the band debuted its often surprisingly psychedelic new material. Fans were more than willing to stare at the digital backdrop of cosmic wormholes and frothing solar flares as Pearl Jam showcased its new album, much of which the crowd knew by heart.

The audience at the Climate Pledge Arena was mostly middle-aged, but a healthy presence of children and teenagers proved that aging Seattleites are doing their duty to pass on the love of grunge to the next generation. Frontman Eddie Vedder did his part by holding the arena in the palm of his hand with every intimate interlude and unplanned exchange with diehard fans. One such moment had him sit down on the edge of the stage and sing the chorus of “Daughter” to a little girl being held up by her parents. The little girl’s rapture became a shared experience as every soul in the arena felt Vedder serenading the collective child within.

Two Dark Matter songs later, the band dedicated “Waiting for Stevie” to Sue Bird , the legendary Seattle Storm basketball player. Vedder described the song as “about a woman finding her power” as the stage lights illuminated Bird’s retired jersey hanging from the rafters. The next number went out to Bill Walton , the hall-of-fame basketball player and iconic Grateful Dead fan who passed away from cancer the day earlier. Vedder described Walton as a man who “cut a path of peace and love” before singing a soulful rendition of “Man of the Hour” while Walton’s smiling face shone from the big screen .

The vibe switched back to hard rock with “Satan’s Bed”, then eased into an encore with “Rearview Mirror.” After a short break, Vedder returned to acknowledge that one of their guitarists had not only played off-key during “Satan’s Bed”, but played the wrong song entirely, proving that “Satan is not on our side.”

The show’s final stretch struck a kind of family reunion, campfire jam session vibe, kicked off by Vedder dedicating a solo acoustic “Just Breathe” to his wife and the wives of his bandmates, who were all gathered together in attendance. “Do the Evolution” brought the energy back up to a fever pitch of outrage against misogyny and militaristic violence before the entire arena belted “Alive”, their voices and bodies and the band and the pulsing lights all rising together in defiant affirmation of the indomitable human spirit.

The lights came on, but the band wasn’t finished yet. As Vedder put it, “We can do what we want with the place.” The giddy members of opening act Deep Sea Divers skipped onto the stage, and the two bands jammed out to an extended riff on Bob Dylan ’s “All Along the Watchtower.” All took a bow and made to exit, but Pearl Jam couldn’t leave without McCready melting “Yellow Ledbetter” into Jimi Hendrix ’s “Little Wing”, a live classic that sent the arena into hysterics. The lights dimmed, and the band finished the set with “Setting Sun”, the final song from Dark Matter , as a blazing ring of light on the event horizon of a black hole brought the night full circle. The lights came on for real this time, and thus ended another in a long line of epic Seattle Pearl Jam shows.

Pearl Jam will play a second show at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on May 30th before continuing its Dark Matter World Tour in Dublin on June 22nd. The tour will take the band through Europe until mid-July, and then return to the United States in August and September. The tour will conclude in New Zealand and Australia in November. “I’ve been touring for over 30 years — my daughters are all grown, we have one grandchild and one on the way … and I’m enjoying spending more time at home. But my fans always show up to have a good time, and I’m going to give them the best show I can for this 'Last Call,'” Jackson said in a statement.

And it’s getting more and more obvious. And I know I’m stumbling around onstage. And now I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable.”

The condition later forced Jackson to postpone the final two concert dates of his original "Last Call" tour in 2022, A Taste of Country reported.

When it comes to Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam was decades ahead of the Justice Department

Up until today, the most enduring fight with Ticketmaster started with a couple of charity concerts in Chicago in 1994.

That’s when Pearl Jam began a years-long, bitter fight with the ticketing giant, after it had tacked service fees on tickets for shows that were trying to raise money for impoverished children.

The issues the Seattle grunge band raised more than 30 years ago lie at the heart of the Justice Department lawsuit filed Thursday arguing that Ticketmaster and its owner, Live Nation Entertainment Inc. are a monopoly and need to be broken up.

Pearl Jam had made that very argument — that fans were being gouged and that artists had no say in the matter — for much of the 1990s, yet found themselves unable to tour without doing business with Ticketmaster.

“It is almost impossible for a band to do a tour of large arenas or other significant venues in major cities and not deal with Ticketmaster,” Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard testified before Congress in 1994.

Messages left Thursday with representatives for the band weren’t immediately returned.

That year, the band filed an antitrust complaint with the DOJ, urging it to take action. And for the next few years, the band attempted to tour for its album “Vs.” — the follow-up to its 13x-platinum debut “Ten” — without using Ticketmaster’s services.

That proved to be near impossible. Despite being one of the biggest rock bands in the country, they found themselves locked out of booking major venues in almost every city, as almost all of them had long-term, exclusive deals to work only with Ticketmaster.

Still, Pearl Jam stubbornly tried to book its own dates in venues far from sizable locales and ill-equipped to handle a major act. The tour was a failure, and the band was forced to cancel most of its shows.

Keeping up its fight, the Pearl Jam was effectively unable to tour in the U.S. in 1995 to support its next album, “Vitalogy.” Tensions within the band, blamed in part to disagreements over the fight with Ticketmaster, led to the departure of drummer Dave Abbruzzese.

By 1998, the band — whose antitrust suit had fizzled — was forced to capitulate and begin doing business with Ticketmaster again, saying it no longer wanted to inconvenience its fans.

Complaints about Ticketmaster fees continued for years after Pearl Jam gave up its fight, and came to a head again in late 2022, when Ticketmaster’s systems crashed when tickets for Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated Eras Tour went on sale .

That fiasco led the Justice Department to take another look, paving the way for Thursday’s antitrust suit.

“We allege that Live Nation relies on unlawful, anticompetitive conduct to exercise its monopolistic control over the live-events industry in the United States at the cost of fans, artists, smaller promoters and venue operators,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in comments that echoed what Pearl Jam argued three decades ago.

“The result is that fans pay more in fees, artists have fewer opportunities to play concerts, smaller promoters get squeezed out and venues have fewer real choices for ticketing services. It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster,” Garland said.

When it comes to Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam was decades ahead of the Justice Department

Pearl Jam asked Bill Clinton to take on Ticketmaster 30 years ago

Three decades before the Justice Department sued Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation, Pearl Jam asked the president for help.

Pearl Jam was at the White House, and President Bill Clinton wanted some advice from the musicians. But first, the band had a favor to ask.

It was April 9, 1994, and Pearl Jam was at the height of its fame after releasing “Vs.,” its second album. Days earlier, Nirvana frontman and fellow Seattle native Kurt Cobain had been found dead in his home from suicide, and Pearl Jam was still reeling. But when it came time to meet Clinton, the band members had a calculated request: They wanted him to join their war against Ticketmaster.

Most presidents become accustomed to celebrity encounters and the favors that sometimes come with them. Kim Kardashian visited with Donald Trump to discuss prison reform. Elvis Presley offered Richard M. Nixon assistance on his anti-drug campaign.

And 30 years ago, Pearl Jam asked for help at the start of a fight that’s still rocking the entertainment world today.

On Thursday, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Live Nation , the parent company of Ticketmaster since 2010, in an attempt to break up the entertainment giant. The Justice Department alleges the company has used its monopoly power to suppress competition. The lawsuit seeks to change the company’s business practices and essentially undo the 2010 merger.

It’s not the first time the Justice Department has investigated Ticketmaster. Back in 1994, when Pearl Jam was in the Oval Office with Clinton, the government was investigating the company for antitrust issues.

At the time, Pearl Jam was feuding with Ticketmaster after it was discovered that the company had been tacking fees onto its ticket sales and had added a service charge, which the company refused to waive, to a pair of charity concerts in Chicago. Meanwhile, the Cold War had ended a few years earlier, and the U.S. military had abandoned multiple bases across the country that it no longer needed. The situation gave Pearl Jam an idea.

“We were there specifically to find out whether some of the U.S. military bases that had recently been shut down could be used as concert sites,” frontman Eddie Vedder wrote in “Pearl Jam Twenty,” the band’s 2010 book. “It would have been a way to avoid using Ticketmaster, and it would have been a boon to local economics.”

Ticketmaster had deals with most of the country’s large music venues that required tickets to be sold through the company, but the bases would have no such obligation. The band hoped to be able to tour without Ticketmaster overcharging its fans, while helping towns reeling from the loss of the bases.

The musicians had reason to think Clinton would be receptive. His 1992 campaign had centered on the economy and the idea that the country could begin to spend domestically instead of on increased defense. Clinton was also a musician, having famously played saxophone on “The Arsenio Hall Show” in 1992.

For Clinton, working with Pearl Jam made political sense, too.

“It never hurts a president to be associated with a wicked cool band,” said Jeff Engel, director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. Clinton was the first baby boomer president, “which means he’s the first president to have grown up with the existence of rock-and-roll. A large part of his appeal was the generational transition.”

But Clinton didn’t approve the plan.

“This is something no one had really tried to do before,” said Steven Hyden, a music critic and author of “Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation.” He added, “In a way, I think it proved their point that this was a monopoly. Not even the most popular rock band in America at the time was able to work without this company. It really showed the amount of power and pull that Ticketmaster had at the time.”

Clinton had an agenda of his own at the meeting with Pearl Jam. He asked the band if the White House should put out a statement in response to Cobain’s death. But Vedder “was too shell-shocked to offer any help,” he wrote in “Pearl Jam Twenty.”

The band’s White House visit ultimately ended with a conversation about the University of Arkansas’s national basketball championship victory over Duke days earlier, which both Clinton — a big Razorbacks fan — and Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament had attended in Charlotte.

Pearl Jam returned to Washington two months later to testify before Congress about its battle with Ticketmaster. Ament and rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard testified that Ticketmaster used monopolistic practices to raise prices, prompting Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) to write a bill requiring ticket distributors to disclose the fees they add to ticket prices.

Ultimately, the Justice Department dropped its investigation of Ticketmaster, and Pearl Jam canceled its 1994 tour in protest of the company. Dingell’s bill failed, and the midterm elections that fall gave the Republicans control of both congressional chambers for the first time in 40 years. When Dingell reintroduced the bill in 1995, the band met unsuccessfully with powerful Republican senators in an attempt to sway the vote.

Pearl Jam continued to boycott Ticketmaster by refusing to play venues the company had contracts with, or by hosting charity events and benefits because Ticketmaster’s contracts generally had a clause allowing bands to sell their own tickets for such performances.

“It’s really unique for an artist who is at the peak of their commercial success to essentially take a hatchet to the music industry,” Hyden said. “Usually, a band in their position would be trying to tour arenas or stadiums and maximize their moment for as much money as possible. And they really did the opposite. They sacrificed a lot of money and in a way alienated their fans because they weren’t able to tour as much as they would have if they just played ball.”

Much has changed in the 30 years since Pearl Jam’s meeting with Clinton. Ticketmaster has been involved in multiple controversies, including when its website crashed during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour presale in 2022, and it’s fair to wonder how Pearl Jam’s scheme to circumvent Ticketmaster would have gone over had it been pitched more recently.

Last month, Pearl Jam released its 12th album, “Dark Matter,” and the band’s war against ticket prices is still going strong. Recently speaking on “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” Vedder floated the idea of new legislation to protect customers.

“It’s battling out-of-control capitalism,” Ament said on the podcast. “It’s just like everybody’s trying to make money off something all the time. I think we do as good of a job as anybody in terms of like we have a really loyal fan club and people that run it that really care about it and try really hard to get tickets in the hands of our fans.”

On May 21, 2024, X user @justice_Tyr22 posted a meme displaying photos of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker with the words, "Kansas City Cancels Three Pearl Jam Shows at Arrowhead Stadium: 'We Stand with Harrison Butker.'" The Chiefs play home games at Arrowhead Stadium, located in Kansas City, Missouri.

A meme claimed Arrowhead Stadium canceled three Pearl Jam shows in defense of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

The text in the user's post read as follows:

After Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder went on an anti-Harrison Butker rant, the front office at Arrowhead Stadium canceled three of the band's upcoming shows. "We stand with Harrison and his admirable moral values. Vedder and his band can find somewhere else to play." The move will cost the band around $14 million. Ouch!!!

Several other users on both Facebook and X shared the same meme and text. One user posted the meme with the caption, "GO WOKE GO BROKE."

However, this item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. The Facebook page America's Last Line of Defense first posted the same meme and text on May 20. The page's management describes its content as containing satire and parody. In other words, Arrowhead Stadium did not cancel any Pearl Jam concerts, nor were any Kansas City dates listed on the band's  tour schedule .

Butker's May 11 commencement speech at Kansas' private Catholic liberal arts school Benedictine College partially inspired the creation of the America's Last Line of Defense meme. The author of the meme also sourced inspiration from the fact Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder commented about Butker's speech during a May 18 concert in Las Vegas,  rebuking  the thoughts about women and motherhood Butker expressed to the female graduates at the commencement.

Readers can watch Vedder's comments in the following YouTube video :

The National Catholic Register website features a complete  transcript  of Butker's speech, while the official YouTube channel for Benedictine College hosts a  video . The video ends with many of the people in attendance giving Butker a standing ovation.

For background, here is  why  we sometimes write about satire/humor.

The band, which announced the tour in February, will perform two shows at Climate Pledge Arena, on May 28 and 30. This marks Pearl Jam's first hometown performance in six years, generating significant excitement among fans.

Pearl Jam shared a new song and announced the release of their 12th studio album, "Dark Matter," in mid-February. The album, created in just three weeks at a Malibu studio, is described by the band as channeling the spirit of their lifelong camaraderie and renewed creative energy. The album is set to drop in stores and online April 19.

Band member and lead vocalist Eddie Vedder expressed his excitement during the announcement of the band's latest album, stating: "We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it, or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful … No hyperbole, I think this is our best work."

Who is the opening for Pearl Jam in Seattle?

Deep Sea Diver, an indie rock band from Seattle, is scheduled to open for Pearl Jam on May 28 and 30 at Climate Pledge Arena.

The band consists of Jessica Dobson, Peter Mansen, Elliot Jackson and Garrett Gue, and was voted Best of the Year by KEXP listeners in 2020.

May 13, 1993 - Slim's - San Francisco, CA, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 500 (sold out) soundcheck: Daughter (instrumental), Why Go, Blood (instrumental), Rats/Release (guitar warm-ups), Animal (instrumental), Animal, Dissident setlist: Animal, Go, Even Flow, Blood, Daughter, W.M.A., Dissident, Why Go, Alive, Hard To Imagine, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, (Dirty Frank), Rats, Baba O'Riley, Once, Jeremy, (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun), Porch/(Tearing) encore: Release, Alone, (Dirty Deeds), Whipping, Leash, Sonic Reducer This "secret" show was a benefit to assist in legal support for a member of the Surfrider Foundation. Pearl Jam is billed as the "David J. Gunn" band and most of Vs. (plus "Better Man" and "Whipping") premier as they have just completed recording the new album. The band even asks for requests at this show. Eddie jokes around: "We're accepting any donations of acid that you may have. Just put it in a little envelope with your name on it... and if we write a great song while we're on it, we'll put your name in the credits". A guitar riff from Van Halen's "Eruption" is played between "Why Go" and "Alive". "Alive" is dedicated to Eddie's uncle, Freddy Vedder. The transition from "Dirty Frank" to "Rats" is very cool sounding. Mike plays some riffs from "Yellow Ledbetter" and Eddie sings some lyrics of Robert Hazard's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" before "Porch". A bit of AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds" is played before "Whipping".

June 16, 1993 - University Theatre - Missoula, MT, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 1 300 (sold out) opening act: Orgone Box setlist: Animal, Go, Whipping, Even Flow, Dissident, Once, Glorified G, Why Go, Jeremy, Elderly Woman..., Alive, Black, Blood, Oceans, Deep, Leash, Rats, (Dirty Frank), Porch encore: Fuckin' Up, Baba O'Riley, Garden, Indifference This show was announced only a week in advance and sold out in 25 minutes. "Pearl Jam wanted to have a nice little intimate show", explained Jeff Kicklighter of the University of Montana's ASUM Programming. Orgone Box, a local hard-rock band, were asked to open four days before the show. Drummer Dan McGuire said they were "ecstatic". The NBA finals were televised this night. Being basketball fanatics, Pearl Jam keeps the crowd waiting for nearly an hour and a half. "Elderly Woman...", "Fuckin' Up" and "Indifference" were premiered. At one point during the show, someone from the surging, bopping crowd threw a tennis shoe on the stage. Eddie picked it up, licked the sole, and threw it back! Jeff's parents videotaped the show from the balcony. The photos for the Rolling Stone cover story in fall of '93 were shot at this show.

June 17, 1993 - The Met - Spokane, WA, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 700 (sold out) opening act: Lazy Susan setlist: Go, Animal, Whipping, Even Flow, Rearviewmirror, Dissident, Once, Daughter, Glorified G, Why Go, Jeremy, Elderly Woman..., Alive, Blood, Porch incomplete encore: Fuckin' Up After "Jeremy", Eddie jokes with the crowd, "... Jeremy Spokane... hee hee... get it?" At one point a fan is literally tossed from the crowd, over security, and onto the stage. The young girl spends the next few moments of her life with Eddie's arm around her as he tells her to be careful. Then he releases her to jump over security back into the crowd.

June 26, 1993 - Sentrum Scene - Oslo, Norway

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 1 600 opening acts: The O-Men, Jack in the Box setlist: Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Garden, Go, Animal, Alive, Porch encore: Fuckin' Up, Leash, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' In The Free World, State Of Love And Trust This "secret" show at Sentrum Scene in Oslo was labeled as a "official Isle Of Calf after-party" with two Norwegian bands and a surprise act. It was a great show and all of the band looked very pleased to do a small-club concert at the start of the European tour.

June 27, 1993 - Kalvøya - Bærum, Norway (Kalvøya Festivalen)

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 30 000 (sold out) setlist: Even Flow, Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Deep, Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Glorified G, Daughter/(Pulled Up), Porch/(Tearing) encore: Oceans, Leash, Sonic Reducer Pearl Jam, together with Neil Young, helped the festival setting a new attendance record this day. Despite other reports - 30 000 people visited. Eddie chats about politics (George Bush) and explains how they canceled their previous Isle Of Calf Festival date in 1992. A fun show.

June 28, 1993 - Sjöhistoriska Museet - Stockholm, Sweden

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 15 000 supporting: Neil Young with Booker T. & The M.G.'s opening act: Red Fun setlist: Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Sonic Reducer, Porch/(Tearing) encore: Daughter/(Tonight's The Night) At this outdoor show, Eddie references how the last time they played Stockholm someone (an American) was backstage stealing their stuff. He references how Americans do these kind of things and to be careful; they can even bomb your country. Pearl Jam's set ends with the audience picking up the "Tonight's The Night" vocal and the band listening to the audience sing in unison. After Neil's set, a light flashes from the side of the stage and one of the speakers 30 feet up is smoking and catches on fire. With the roadies fighting the flames, Neil returns for the encore, unaware of the fire, and comments on how they haven't played the next song for a long time so... "Let's bring out Pearl Jam to do it". Then Neil and Pearl Jam perform a thunderous, blistering version of "Rockin' In The Free World" together - an exciting ending to a somewhat lackluster Pearl Jam performance.

June 30, 1993 - Jäähalli - Helsinki, Finland

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

supporting: Neil Young with Booker T. & The M.G.'s setlist: Animal, Even Flow, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter, Black, Alive, Porch/(Across The Universe)/(Fuckin' Up) Opening with a good version of "Animal", a typical "Even Flow" with a short, ripping solo by Mike follows. Eddie is having problems with his voice and is using accentuated talking in place of singing at times. "Why Go" begins with an unusually long introduction. "Glorified G" is warmly received by the crowd. Afterward, Eddie finally speaks to the audience, announcing "Daughter", which is performed with a particularly delicate, gentle tone and no tags. "Black" is now performed with an absence of emotion that was present only six months prior, and segues neatly into a canned version of "Alive". Before "Porch" Eddie says, "I promise not to come back until I have a voice", yet "Porch" is delivered adequately, and tags are borrowed: the lyrics "Nothing is going to change my world" (The Beatles' "Across the Universe") and "Why do I keep fuckin' up" (Neil Young's "Fuckin' Up") are chanted.

July 2, 1993 - Stadio Bentegodi - Verona, Italy

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 45 000 (sold out) supporting: U2 opening act: An Emotional Fish setlist: Even Flow, Animal, Go, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Why Go, Jeremy, Black, Alive, Porch First show out of four in Italy, with headliner U2.

July 3, 1993 - Stadio Bentegodi - Verona, Italy

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 45 000 (sold out) supporting: U2 opening act: An Emotional Fish setlist: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Go, (Sympathy For The Devil), Porch, Rockin' In The Free World Eddie, wearing a shirt saying "Paul" (Bono's given name), again tries to enchant the audience, sporting a devil mask and a green fly mask. After duct taping the waist and both legs of his baggy shorts on, he then throws himself into the audience from the long arms of the "Zoo TV tour" stage arms twice.

July 6, 1993 - Stadio Flaminio - Rome, Italy

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 42 000 supporting: U2 opening act: An Emotional Fish setlist: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Glorified G, (I Will Follow), Daughter, Animal, Alive, Dissident, Blood, Porch/(Tearing) This crowd is clearly here for U2. Eddie plugs the organizations (Greenpeace and Amnesty International) represented at this stadium concert by asking people to sign their names at their booths. The intro riff to U2's "I Will Follow" is played before "Daughter".

July 7, 1993 - Stadio Flaminio - Rome, Italy

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 42 000 supporting: U2 opening act: An Emotional Fish setlist: Even Flow, Improv, Go, Once, Rearviewmirror, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(MLK), Alive, Black, Blood, Porch/(Tearing) The crowd seems a bit more into Pearl Jam than the previous show. At one point, Eddie asks, "You all OK? I saw you all working it out up here in the front, which is good. The love music comes later on in the evening". U2′s "MLK" is covered briefly as a "Daughter" rambling. At the show's conclusion, Eddie dons Bono's fly mask saying, "The fly says goodbye" and exits.

July 10, 1993 - Slane Castle - Slane, Ireland

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 30 000 supporting: Neil Young with Booker T. & The M.G.'s opening acts: Van Morrison, The Saw Doctors, James, 4 Non Blondes, The Blue Angels setlist: Why Go, Jeremy, Even Flow, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Once, Glorified G, Daughter/(Rain), Alive, Porch/(Tearing) encore: Baba O'Riley Towards the end of "Even Flow", there is a crowd surge and a large number of people fall down. Eddie stops the song until everybody can get back up, telling the fans: "Look out for each other. It's a good day to be best friends". "Glorified G" is introduced as "a song about stupid Americans with big guns". The weather fluctuated between sun and showers during Pearl Jam's set, and Eddie tagged the opening lines to the Beatles' "Rain" onto "Daughter". Before "Porch", Eddie apologises for not playing in Ireland before (they had originally been scheduled to open their first 1992 European tour at Dublin's SFX venue, but that didn't happen), saying "We just didn't know. We had no fuckin' idea how cool it was. So I think we're going to come back and play two weeks of club shows or something". He inserts lines from Henry Rollins' "Tearing" into a furious version of "Porch", during which he ventures into the crowd. After the encore break, Eddie says hi from U2. "Baba O'Riley" is introduced as "not by U2". The audience did not agree with the choice of headliner. After the performance of Pearl Jam a lot of the younger left. At that point the ones standing outside were let in for free to see Neil Young's performance. Pearl Jam (minus Dave) join Neil's band for "Rockin' In The Free World" during his set.

July 11, 1993 - Finsbury Park - London, England

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

supporting: Neil Young with Booker T. & The M.G.'s opening acts: James, Teenage Fanclub, 4 Non Blondes setlist: Animal, Go, Once, Blood, Even Flow, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Improv, Why Go, Leash, Porch/(Fuckin' Up/Tearing) Eddie expresses some concerns about disliking playing large venues like Finsbury Park. Pearl Jam seems to have difficulty finding their way back to "Porch" after the "Fuckin' Up"/"Tearing Up" improv. After Pearl Jam's set Eddie throws a bunch of carrots to the audience, saying: "If you eat them now you'll be able to see Neil a little better!".

July 13, 1993 - Brixton Academy - London, England

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 6 426 (sold out) opening act: Tribe After Tribe setlist: Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Blood, Dissident, Even Flow, Go, Animal, Black, Glorified G, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Alive, Rats, Porch encore 1: Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Sonic Reducer encore 2: Once, Indifference "Rats" has a funky opening. The start of "Whipping" sounds almost reggae-like. Eddie, offering some insight into "Rearviewmirror", explains "... listen to this song in a car really fast, driving away from someone you hate". On setlist but not played: "Leash", "Garden", "State Of Love And Trust" and "Fuckin' Up".

July 14, 1993 - Brixton Academy - London, England

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 6 426 (sold out) opening act: Tribe After Tribe setlist: Release, Even Flow, Blood, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, (Beast Of Burden)/(Suck You Dry), Alive, Black, Go, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Porch/(Tearing), Once, Garden, Improv, State Of Love And Trust encore 1: Leash, Fuckin' Up, Sonic Reducer encore 2: Indifference "Even Flow" is stopped until someone in the crowd who is down gets back up. Eddie starts counting the people in front to see if everyone is all right. Before "Alive" The Rolling Stones' "Beast Of Burden" is covered briefly, with the lyrics modified to "... all I want from you is to make love to me" with Eddie clarifying that those are just lyrics and they don't really mean it. Eddie ends this jam with some repeats of "suck you dry", from the Mudhoney song with the same name.

July 16, 1993 - Ahoy´ Sportpaleis - Rotterdam, Netherlands

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 9 500 (sold out) opening act: Tribe After Tribe setlist: Release, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Glorified G, Daughter/(W.M.A.), Garden, Go, Animal, Alive, Black, Porch/(Tearing) encore 1: Improv, Once, Fuckin' Up, Leash encore 2: Sonic Reducer, Rockin' In The Free World, State Of Love And Trust encore 3: Indifference Pearl Jam has a few problems adjusting to the size of this venue. Eddie introduces "Go" as "a song you can sing to your own body" and he calls it "Don't Go Out On Me". Eddie requests the lights be turned on and left on for "Alive" ("Hey, we'd like to be able to see these people"). "Even Flow" on setlist but not played. Great show!

July 17, 1993 - Ahoy´ Sportpaleis - Rotterdam, Netherlands

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 9 500 (sold out) opening act: Tribe After Tribe setlist: Oceans, Even Flow, Once, Whipping, Rearviewmirror, Jeremy, Deep, Garden, Animal, State Of Love And Trust, (Angie), Black, Alive, Glorified G, Daughter/(Ruby Tuesday), Why Go encore: Elderly Woman..., Leash, Porch, Improv, Footsteps, Baba O'Riley Becoming more comfortable with the Ahoy´ tonight, Pearl Jam improvises the Rolling Stones' "Angie" with lyrics about Utrecht with the crowd joining in and Eddie telling them, "Good singing... much better than me. I'd better buy a ticket". "Porch" is wrapped up with an unusual drum solo by Dave.

July 18, 1993 - Paradiso - Amsterdam, Netherlands

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 500 opening act: Tribe After Tribe setlist: Indifference, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, Black, Why Go, (Hard To Imagine), Jeremy, Porch 1 000 tickets were distributed but only 500 were allowed inside to this "secret" show. Unusual opening with "Indifference". "Even Flow" is stopped and restarted because of some technical problem. Eddie's vocal problems surface during "Daughter" (he is suffering from a cold) and the show is stopped briefly when he leaves the stage after "Why Go". After two more extended songs (with little vocals), Pearl Jam apologizes and the show ends.

August 11, 1993 - Max Bell Arena - Calgary, AB, Canada

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 4 700 (sold out) opening act: Cadillac Tramps incomplete setlist: Even Flow, Jeremy, Improv A terribly hot venue, totally packed. Despite a hammered Eddie and a very poor sound system, making the bass lines and bass drum often indistinguishable, Pearl Jam delivers a magical performance, the most memorable part of the night being when Eddie improved a song called "Canadians Rule" after talking about how much he loved Canadians.

August 12, 1993 - Edmonton Convention Centre - Edmonton, AB, Canada

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 4 100 (sold out) opening act: Cadillac Tramps incomplete setlist: Release, Even Flow, Once, Jeremy, Deep, Alive, Black, Garden, Why Go, (Owner Of A Lonely Heart)

August 14, 1993 - Gimli Motorsports Park - Gimli, MB, Canada (Sunfest)

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 19 000 setlist: Even Flow, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(Gimme Shelter), Go, State Of Love And Trust, Garden, Blood, Alive, Black, Once, Porch encore: Indifference, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' In The Free World, Baba O'Riley Pearl Jam helped the festival set a record one-day attendance with 19 000 people attending the night in which the band performed. This show is frequently referred to as "Mudfest", due to a downpour prior to the concert. One of the reasons that this show is so incredible is that Pearl Jam was jumping out of their collective skins to be able to cut loose for more than 90 minutes. Currently touring with Neil Young, they were confined to an early 45 minute set. They were offered this slot (and was the only non-Canadian band ever to play this large festival) and it became their night. Despite Eddie's drinking, Pearl Jam is very high energy and intense. "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones is played for the first time as a tag in "Daughter".

August 17, 1993 - Centre Robert-Guertin - Gatineau, QC, Canada

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 4 500 (sold out) opening act: Doughboys setlist: Go, Animal, Rearviewmirror, Once, Even Flow, Alive, Why Go, Black, Jeremy, Porch encore 1: Deep, Daughter, Oceans encore 2: State Of Love And Trust, Baba O'Riley, Rockin' In The Free World encore 3: Indifference MCA Concerts Canada decided to release 500 more tickets after the concert sold out in less than a day.

August 18, 1993 - CNE Stadium - Toronto, ON, Canada

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 60 000 supporting: Neil Young with Booker T. & The M.G.'s opening acts: Soundgarden, Blues Traveler setlist: Go, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, (Sweet Home Alabama), Glorified G, Daughter, Alive, Porch, Baba O'Riley Mike plays a few notes from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" just before "Glorified G". Blues Traveler's John Popper helps out, playing harmonica on "Baba O'Riley" from a wheelchair. Pearl Jam join Neil for his encore, "Rockin' In The Free World".

August 19, 1993 - Verdun Auditorium - Montreal, QC, Canada

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 5 000 (sold out) opening act: Doughboys setlist: Oceans, Go, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman..., Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter, State Of Love And Trust, Alive, Black, Whipping, Porch/(Across The Universe)/(Tearing) encore 1: Improv, Once, Garden, Fuckin' Up encore 2: The Kids Are Alright (Eddie solo), Sonic Reducer, Rockin' In The Free World encore 3: Indifference "Go" is stopped and restarted because the crowd is going nuts. The Who song, "The Kids Are Alright", is premiered at this show.

September 2, 1993 - Universal Amphitheatre - Universal City, CA, USA (MTV Video Music Awards)

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

setlist: Animal, Rockin' In The Free World Pearl Jam wins four awards (out of five nominations) this night, including Video of the Year for "Jeremy". Eddie says that without music, he might have ended up like Jeremy in the video (shooting himself). He jokes that the MTV's spaceman award "looks like Bono". Neil Young's appearance with Pearl Jam on "Rockin' In The Free World" is unannounced and nearly every music artist interviewed after this awards show noted that as the highlight of this night.

September 2, 1993 - The Viper Room - Los Angeles, CA, USA

opening act: The Darling Buds incomplete setlist: Animal, Once, Even Flow, Rearviewmirror, State Of Love And Trust, Sonic Reducer, Rockin' In The Free World Pearl Jam plays this unannounced show at Johnny Depp's club after the MTV awards show. Apparently roadie-less, Mike asks, "Is there a pick in the house?". At some point during the performance, Michael Stipe and Bill Berry from R.E.M. join them onstage. From RAW US: "The set was loose and tremendous fun, but it would have to be a heck of a lot more enjoyable minus the posse of glamorous Hollywood-ites who were way too cool to show emotion during a set thrashed out by one of the hardest working bands in America. Hardworking and pros, too. How else could McCready have been able to drink his beer while playing "Even Flow" without missing a beat? My only wish is that Pearl Jam had been goofier, thrown caution to the wind and followed through with "Detroit Rock City" when messing around while Gossard tried to tune his guitar".

Fans that were seated in the aluminum bleachers up on the elevated berm "just wanted down" into the main lawn area, resulting in "a tsunami" of concertgoers flooding into the lower area during the concert's first few songs. Mike: "I remember it being kind of exciting, but that's probably just me being young and naive. We didn't have any control over that, but thinking about it now, it makes me a little scared and sad. Hopefully, nobody got hurt". At one point, Eddie suggests that everyone just sit down and watch the sunset because "you don't get many of these". This show is pretty much the patented Vs. show with little variation from the album versions of these songs except for a few lyrical flubs. Mike plays a little "Yellow Ledbetter" teaser prior to "Daughter". Mudhoney's Mark Arm joins Pearl Jam for "Sonic Reducer", which is performed as an encore "with Neil's permission". Eddie references being embarrassed having accepted the MTV Video Music Awards and says he wished he'd stayed home.

Eddie is wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask and Stone has on that crazy shark swimming cap. Eddie tells a story before "Elderly Woman..." about a girl who wrote him saying that Pearl Jam's music was the only thing that kept her alive when she considered suicide. She included a phone number and he called her, "but the fuckin' number was disconnected". As the band returns for the encore, they carry out a makeshift cross and Eddie remarks, "Here's to 2 000 years of Christianity... and to 15 minutes without it".

I've smoked a lot of pot since then. I don't know who the fuck you are". "Shine" is a Rollins Band song.

At one point, Eddie has the lights turned on saying the band had sushi that night, he has some leftover rice and wants to "try something". He flings the rice into the crowd and it spews out in a million pieces. He says, "Now that's not Minute Rice. It was supposed to stick together". Apparently he was trying to launch a ball of the rice into the balcony. Before walking off stage, Eddie says, "Keep the oceans clean for me here guys". There was real sense that Eddie felt good to be back on his old stomping grounds. "Young Man Blues" is a song by The Who.

November 4, 1993 - Whisky a Go Go - Los Angeles, CA, USA

setlist: - Reportedly Pearl Jam played four songs at this club that night.

November 5, 1993 - Empire Polo Club - Indio, CA, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 25 000 (sold out) opening acts: American Music Club, Eleven, Weapon of Choice soundcheck: Wash, Alone, Yellow Ledbetter setlist: Release, Go, Animal, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/Improv, Alive, Rearviewmirror, Improv, Blood, Rats, Once, Porch/(Tearing), Fuck Me In The Brain encore 1: Sonic Reducer, Even Flow, Indifference encore 2: Baba O'Riley This show, originally planned for the L.A. area, was problematic with respect to parking and cold temperatures. The unruly crowd was moshing in line during the soundcheck and to PA music! Before Pearl Jam started, a roadie sang a hysterical rendition of "Copa Cabana". The audience is launching shoes at the stage even before and during the opening acts. In fact, during Eleven's set, a shoe hits Jack Iron's bass drum, he stops the song and says that if he finds out who threw it he would make him pay for the damages (quite pissed). Finally, Pearl Jam hits the stage, with the audience behaving outrageously. Prior to "Deep", Ed remarks, "Kill your local rapist, but torture him first, then serve him to your enemy for dinner". Later: "The first guy I met today gave me this book and asked if I wanted to know the secret for living forever". Tossing it into the crowd, he says, "Why the fuck would I want to live forever?". During "Porch", Eddie invites the audience to spit at him. The agitated crowd, continuing to throw stuff onto the stage, leads Eddie to comment that "me and Jeff are going to the front gate and when you exit, we are going to beat the shit out of every barefoot person here" and "throw a gun so I can shoot you". The band eventually plays from behind their amps so they won't be hit by the flying shoes. This audience was awful. The recording of "Blood" from this show is released on the "Daughter" single. "Fuck Me In The Brain" was released later on the third fan club single (as "Ramblings"). The guys deserve a medal for playing this long and this well despite the rowdy crowd. The Coachella Festival's origins trace back to this show, when Pearl Jam was boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. The show validated the site's viability for hosting large events, leading to the inaugural Coachella Festival being held over the course of two days in October 1999, three months after Woodstock '99.

November 6, 1993 - Mesa Amphitheatre - Mesa, AZ, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

Lightning during the show added intensity. Eddie stops "Glorified G" to start it over "...as the song deserves". Eddie does a lovely solo version of "I Am A Patriot". "Yellow Ledbetter" is a big surprise and is performed by the band for the first time in its complete form. This live version appears on the b-side of certain versions of the "Daughter" single. A bit of John Denver's "Sunshine On My Shoulders" is within "Porch".

November 7, 1993 - Mesa Amphitheatre - Mesa, AZ, USA

"Footsteps" is played by request (someone holds up a sign). Eddie is angered by someone crowdsurfing. Before "Leash", the audience tosses a University of Arizona sweatshirt onstage which Eddie drapes over a mic stand and burns, being displeased with the University because they were trying to develop an otherwise pristine piece of land holding significant historical worth to the Apaches. The order of the setlist is changed from the handwritten version.

"Deep" begins with Eddie saying: "Deep... deep in the heart of Texas". He preludes "Jeremy" with, "You might know this story". The "Footsteps" tag in "Daughter" is particularly haunting. Midway through the show, Eddie sarcastically addresses the crowd: "How does it feel to be rich? Actually, maybe you should ask us. I'll give my money away, I don't want to be rich. I just have a feeling it might change you. It might turn you into a fucking asshole".

An upbeat, enthused show. Eddie introduces "Animal" as a song about his mother. The encore begins with Eddie saying "This is a song for someone who's here tonight and they know who it is and it's by Pete Townshend", leading to a lovely version of "The Kids are Alright", performed by Eddie solo. Pearl Jam premiers "Last Exit", with Eddie bringing a sheet of paper out and saying, "These are words for a new song no one has heard before. I don't think Mike knows it yet". Later he asks the crowd if they want "a fast song or a slow song", and they do "Sonic Reducer".

A smoking "Sonic Reducer". Dave collapses after "Alive" so the pace slows down and Pearl Jam performs "Yellow Ledbetter" and "Footsteps" sans drums. Chuck Treece, Urge Overkill's drummer, joins Pearl Jam for "Rockin' In The Free World".

November 22, 1993 - Barton Coliseum - Little Rock, AR, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

opening act: Urge Overkill incomplete setlist: Release, Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, Alive, Once, Why Go, Black, Jeremy, Garden, Deep, Go, Animal, Daughter, Glorified G, Leash, Porch, Indifference Originally this show was scheduled for Pine Bluff, AR. Eddie expounds, "Is Little Rock pretty? Is it fucked? Is it pretty fucked?" The crowd roars with approval. He is relatively non-chatty, staying near center stage most of the night. Eddie passes his wine bottle to the audience and later walks to sidestage, climbs on top of a monitor, standing with his arms crossed, almost threatening to jump into the crowd. Toward the end of the show, Eddie says, "This next song was written specifically for this show, and it's called "Treat Me Like the Devil". (May have been an improv or an early version of "Satan's Bed".) Later he says, "This next song is called "Treat Me Like an Angel" leading to "Porch". Mike reads the band names and sports team names off the various clothing items tossed onto the stage throughout the show. Eventually, Pearl Jam throws most of their own clothing back to the crowd, leaving the stage wearing only their shorts and shoes.

November 24, 1993 - Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center - Wichita, KS, USA

opening act: Urge Overkill setlist: Go, Animal, Even Flow, Glorified G, Daughter/(I'm One), Jeremy, Deep, Oceans, State Of Love And Trust, Dissident, Alive, Porch/(Tearing) encore 1: The Kids Are Alright (Eddie solo), Rearviewmirror, Black, Rockin' In The Free World encore 2: Indifference Good show with Eddie fairly chatty and lots of little guitar riffs and fills are heard between songs. "Oceans" pops up oddly in mid-set. "Porch" is intense with a cool strobe light effect. Eddie stops "Black" about a minute into it asking people to quiet down, saying they haven't played it lately and that "... it's kind of a heavy thing" and asks the crowd surfers to "just cool it for one song, all right?" "If you come up, we're gonna spit on you and we're gonna kick you and the whole thing. Just mellow for one song. These people up front–they just wanna watch some music, OK? Deal!". The song is restarted from the beginning. Eddie starts off the encore with a solo performance of "The Kids Are Alright", leading directly into "Rearviewmirror". The band is on and Eddie's voice is flawless.

November 28, 1993 - Balch Fieldhouse - Boulder, CO, USA (canceled)

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 4 000 (sold out) opening acts: Mudhoney, Urge Overkill This show got canceled just hours before showtime because of crowd control. Pearl Jam wanted security guards to stay out of the way as people in the audience danced in front of the stage, while officials were concerned about "moshing" and people getting injured. Pearl Jam later rescheduled this show with not one but two shows in Denver, CO in March of 1994.

November 30, 1993 - Aladdin Theatre - Las Vegas, NV, USA

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 7 000 (sold out) opening acts: Mudhoney, Urge Overkill setlist: Even Flow, Once, Deep, Jeremy, Dissident, Daughter/(Instant Karma)/(Across The Universe), Go, Animal, State Of Love And Trust, Tremor Christ, Black, Blood, Alive encore 1: Rearviewmirror, Whipping, Leash, Porch/(Tearing) encore 2: Jeff, Stone, Mark Arm, Steve Turner & Chuck Treece: Swallow My Pride, (Jazz Odyssey), Ain't Nothin' To Do, Eddie & Terry Presley: My Way Pearl Jam play the first of three shows in their first visit to Nevada at the Aladdin Theatre (originally scheduled for the Sands Hotel). In possibly a nod to Las Vegas' omission on the Ten tour, the band busts out explosively with Ten's "Even Flow", "Once", "Deep" and "Jeremy", the latter including extended "whoo-whoos" by Eddie. With fellow Seattle-ites, Mudhoney, Eddie jokes "Hi! Hello! Someone's throwing up a shoe here, and on the toe it's got some writing. It's very interesting. It says "I love me! I love me! I love me! I love me! I love me! I love me!". So apparently they do love themselves more than Mudhoney". Vs. songs are up next, starting with "Glorified G". There must have been some The Beatles connection for the "Daughter" to include three The Beatles'/John Lennon related tags, including "Instant Karma", ("Who do you think you are? Who do you think you are? You're a superstar"), "Across The Universe" ("Nothing's gonna change my world"), and Eddie whispers "Get Back" at song's close. This show features the premiere of "Tremor Christ", presumably after being recorded during mid-November sessions in New Orleans a few weeks prior. The song features a slightly different drum intro from the album, similar but re-arranged lyrics, and some made-up lyrics by Eddie indicating that part wasn't completely finished. There is no introduction or post-song explanation from Eddie, and greeted with polite applause. "Black" has a strong buildup by Mike and Eddie including a "We belong together" tag. The energy of "Blood" has been building during this tour, and this three minute song is sonically monstrous. The already pessimistic "Alive" gets the lyric treatment "Is that the question? You fucking bitch?". This was the "Throw stuff at the band" tour, and tonight Eddie mentions that "There's a book by Kurt Vonnegut that somebody threw up. I can't find any good quotes right off the bat. He said something once, he said "We're all here to fart around, don't let anyone get in your way" and right into the familiar intro of "Leash" ("Drop the leash, Drop the leash, Get out of my fuckin' face"). After the encore break, Stone comes up and introduces Mark Arm and Steve Turner from Mudhoney, as well touring drummer Chuck Treece from Urge Overkill and that "we're gonna play a couple of Green River songs (actually one Green River song and one Dead Boys song) and you're gonna just have to sit through it, because we decided we wanted to do it. So if you guys don't want to hear it to hear it, fuck you!". Always one to reference history, Eddie reinforces that "You don't know what this is, this is history. A long time ago these guys were in a band, they're finally playing tonight. I'm proud to introduce Green River playing "Swallow My Pride" and he retreats side-stage with his omnipresent Super-8 recorder. The audience doesn't quite know how to react. While Dave hops on drums, the band fiddles with "Jazz Odyssey" by Spinal Tap, complete with Mark scatting. Green River's version of the Dead Boys "Ain't Nothin' To Do" starts with a huge scream from Mark, and that gets the audience going". Jokingly, Mark salutes the crowd, "Thank you very much, Pearl Jam's next". The fun isn't over, as an Elvis Presley impersonator, called "Terry Presley", joins Eddie on stage for the Paul Anka standard "My Way". Eddie takes the second verse, in his best Elvis baritone. "Swallow My Pride" and "My Way" were later released as two of four songs on Pearl Jam's fourth Fan Club Holiday single.

December 1, 1993 - Aladdin Theatre - Las Vegas, NV, USA

attendance: 7 000 (sold out) opening acts: Mudhoney, Urge Overkill setlist: Release, Go, Animal, Why Go, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(The Real Me), Even Flow, Garden, Blood, State Of Love And Trust, Alive, Footsteps, Porch encore 1: Improv, Rearviewmirror, Alone, Rockin' In The Free World encore 2: Indifference This is the second of two nights at the Aladdin Theatre. "Garden" is a request "from someone I met... actually someone Stone met while he was losing money". Eddie tells the crowd that "We finally made it to Vegas, it took us awhile. Believe me, you're worth waiting for. Only one more show after this and then we're going home. This tour has been about six weeks, and I haven't washed my pants once. And you can probably guess how many pairs I have". The "Porch" jam includes the lyrics "Ask me why I try so hard? Ask me why I try to be real? It's just how I feel. I think I'm losin' my mind. I've been running out of time. Before I lost my mind, my mind, my mind". A jam to start the encore is very jazzy, guitar on the backbeat. Lyrics include "Don't sin, my friend. I take what I can. I don't believe in no man. You can't trust anything". The crowd goes wild when Eddie asks for requests, then "these guys are asking for "Release", that was the first song we played (laughter). Want to hear it again?". Someone requestes "Alone", leading to a solid version, with the spoken word end part omitted. "Rockin' In The Free World" includes guest appearances by members of Mudhoney and Urge Overkill.

Mudhoney's Steve Turner and Mark Arm join Pearl Jam for "Ain't Nothin' To Do".

pearl jam 1997 tour dates

attendance: 2 000 (sold out) Pearl Jam was originally scheduled to perform at the taping of the MTV's Live and Loud for their New Year's Eve special, closing the show after Nirvana played. However, Pearl Jam canceled at the last minute because Eddie was sick. That "allowed" Nirvana to play an extra half-hour. Also on the bill were Cypress Hill and The Breeders. When they were setting up Cypress Hill's gear, they also set up Pearl Jam's gear and at the end of their set Stone, Jeff and Dave joined for the "Real Thing" from the Judgement Night soundtrack. Attendance at this event included people like Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Anthony Kiedis, Flea and the cast of Almost Live, as well as many local television newscasters and politicians.
