Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be “Our Best Season So Far”, Says Anson Mount

Star trek: discovery’s ending had a major 33rd century federation reveal, 10 underrated animated tv shows from the 1990s that still hold up today.

The classic Star Trek: The Original Series characters Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), and Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) don't seem to be serving aboard the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and here's why. Although Scotty was briefly heard aboard the alternate reality Enterprise in SNW 's season 1 finale, McCoy and Sulu haven't made an appearance or been name-checked in the TOS prequel series. Leonard McCoy doesn't serve aboard the Enterprise until the TOS episode "The Corbomite Maneuver", taking over from Dr. Mark Piper (Paul Fix), and SNW showrunner Akiva Goldsman has stated his desire to use this moment as the show's endpoint.

That's because McCoy completed Star Trek: The Original Series ' classic trio in 2266, six years after the events of Strange New Worlds season 2. The prequel series has established that Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is serving aboard the USS Farragut, where he's attracted the attention of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) as a possible successor. As it heads toward 2266, Strange New Worlds will presumably shed light on how Kirk assembled his own Enterprise crew, which could see him interacting with the young McCoy, Sulu, and Scotty. Here's what's known about each classic TOS character's career during the time of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.

Where Is Bones In Strange New Worlds Season 2?

It's unclear exactly where Leonard McCoy is based during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. The Star Trek: Voyager episode "Lifesigns" revealed that Dr. McCoy pioneered a surgical procedure for grafting brain tissue in 2253. This is the year before Pike's Enterprise visits Talos IV, and 13 years before McCoy eventually joins Kirk's Enterprise. At some point in the mid-2260s, McCoy was stationed on Capella IV, a pre-warp planet that had no real interest in the medical sciences or hospitals. This lack of interest meant that McCoy's time on Capella IV was brief, and it appears that he joined the Enterprise soon after.

The lack of definitive information about Dr. McCoy's career between 2253 and his brief assignment on Capella IV means that he could become a big part of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' future. Although it's fairly well established that McCoy didn't serve on the Enterprise until 2266, it's clear that his friendship with Kirk preceded this assignment. It's possible, therefore, that as Paul Wesley's Kirk becomes a bigger part of Strange New Worlds , his friend Bones may also be introduced to the crew of Pike's Enterprise.

Where Is Sulu In Strange New Worlds Season 2?

Mr. Sulu's Star Trek history at the time of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a similar open canvas for the show's writers to fill in. It was established in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home that the young Sulu underwent pilot's training at Starfleet Academy during the late 2250s or early 2260s. This means that he's likely to still be a cadet at the time of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. Interestingly, Sulu didn't start his tour on the Enterprise as a pilot and was instead the department head for Astrosciences.

Sulu's love of botany, his skills as a pilot, and his Astrosciences posting suggest that the young Hikaru took a while to find his place in Starfleet. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 showed Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) experience various departments aboard the Enterprise. It's therefore possible that Cadet Sulu could be bound for Pike's Enterprise at some point in the future, learning the ropes of piloting a starship from Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), and finding his true calling.

Where Is Scotty In Strange New Worlds Season 2?

The teaser of "Mr. Scott" in the season 1 finale teased a potential appearance by Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 . However, Carol Kane's Pelia will be the Enterprise's Chief Engineer instead, raising the question of Scotty's current whereabouts in 2260. It was established in Star Trek: The Original Series that Montgomery Scott's engineering career began in 2241, so he must surely be a well-known face in Starfleet by the time of Strange New Worlds .

Prior to serving aboard the USS Enterprise, Scotty wrote several Starfleet technical manuals and was an engineering advisor to the freighting-line base in the Deneva System. This is important, as the Deneva System is where Jim Kirk's brother, Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) will eventually settle down with his family. Sadly, it's also where Kirk's brother dies in Star Trek: TOS . It's possible, therefore, that a visit to Scotty's freighting-line base in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could set up Sam Kirk's tragic fate.

All cast and characters confirmed for ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’

The latest Star Trek series to hit Paramount Plus premieres this May in the form of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . A spinoff of Discovery , the series will serve as a prequel to The Original Series, as it will follow the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before James T. Kirk took command. Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck will be reprising their roles as fan-favorites Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock, respectively, and they’ll be joined by an ensemble of newcomers playing both familiar and fresh characters.

As its release date draws near, Paramount Plus has been sharing all new details about the show’s cast, so we finally know what to expect from the new team. So, with Strange New Worlds beaming onto streaming in less than a month, now’s the time to become acquainted with the original original crew of the Enterprise. Read on for a full breakdown of the much-anticipated series’ main cast and who’ll they be playing.

Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike

It's a dangerous job, so try to have some fun. Captain Pike's orders. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5 💫 https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/nHRCoZtOtc — Star Trek (@StarTrek) April 2, 2022

Christopher Pike — Kirk’s predecessor in the Enterprise’s captain’s chair — had previously been played by Jeffrey Hunter, Sean Kenney, and Bruce Greenwood, but Anson Mount (Marvel’s Inhumans ) quickly made himself the most beloved incarnation of the courageous character during his recurring role on Discovery season two. Now, 55 years on from his creation in 1966, Pike is back to lead his own show.

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One

As far as First Officers go, Una is Number One. #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5. ✨ https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/pFZlR5lI7a — Star Trek (@StarTrek) April 1, 2022

Originally played by Majel Barrett in TOS pilot “The Cage,” which also introduced Pike, X-Men star Rebecca Romijn’s portrayal of Number One has already done a lot to flesh the character out, including giving her an actual name, Una Chin-Riley. She’ll be back in Strange New Worlds to add further facets to Pike’s faithful first officer.

Ethan Peck as Spock

Half human. Half Vulcan. Quite simply Spock. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th. 💫 https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/eoawnccHAH — Star Trek (@StarTrek) April 1, 2022

Stepping into the legendary role of Spock, previously embodied by Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto, was no easy feat for Ethan Peck ( Penny Dreadful: City of Angels ), but he managed to win over fans with his younger, rougher-around-the-edges portrayal in Discovery . We can’t wait to see him grow into the Spock we know and love in Strange New Worlds .

Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel

Nurse Chapel is one of Starfleet's best, and she knows it. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th. ✨ https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/Qm66gnV7FX — Star Trek (@StarTrek) March 31, 2022

When Star Trek went to series and Number One was eliminated, Majel Barrett was recast as Nurse Christine Chapel, a role she reprised in The Animated Series and two movies ( The Motion Picture and The Voyage Home ). In Strange New Worlds , Chapel will be portrayed by Jess Bush ( Playing for Keeps ).

Babs Olusanmokun as Doctor M’Benga

Dr. M'Benga will see you now. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th. ✨ https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/FxaJlsfHYh — Star Trek (@StarTrek) March 31, 2022

Yet another TOS character reimagined for Strange New Worlds is Dr. M’Benga, who appeared in the classic show as Bones’ second-in-command of the Enterprise’s medical division. Originally portrayed by Booker Bradshaw, M’Benga will be portrayed on SNW by Dune actor Babs Olusanmokun.

Bruce Horak as Hemmer

Hemmer is reporting for duty. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th 💫 https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/Kvc7k2aEXR — Star Trek (@StarTrek) March 30, 2022

The advantage of Strange New World being a prequel is that it gets to introduce elements from later series into the world of The Original Series . For instance, Bruce Horak ( Warehouse 13 ) is playing Engineer Hemmer, a member of the Aenar, a blind, telepathic race first introduced in Enterprise .

Melissa Navia as Lieutenant Erica Ortegas

Lieutenant Ortegas came to fly! #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th. 💫 https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/B3SpwRseIG — Star Trek (@StarTrek) March 30, 2022

Strange New Worlds will reveal that, before Hikaru Sulu piloted the ship, the Enterprise’s helmsman was Lieutenant Erica Ortegas, as played by Melissa Navia ( Bull ). Ortegas is pretty good at her job, too, as her character promo reveals that she thinks she’s one of the best pilots to ever graduate from the Starfleet Academy.

Christina Chong as Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh

Lieutenant La'An isn't just chief of security—she's a survivor. #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5 on @ParamountPlus ! pic.twitter.com/zL457YwMia — Star Trek on Paramount+ (@StarTrekOnPPlus) March 29, 2022

Probably the most intriguing of SNW ‘s original character is La’an (pronounced La-Ahn) Noonien-Singh. That’s a name that carries a lot of weight in the Star Trek canon, with it confirmed that La’an is somehow related to the infamous Khan. A born survivor, she is the Enterprise’s chief of security and is played by Christina Chong ( Line of Duty ).

Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura

Cadet Uhura's future is hailing. #StarTrek : #StrangeNewWorlds premieres May 5th. 💫 https://t.co/ypHgRphrr9 pic.twitter.com/NirP3r2ZkH — Star Trek (@StarTrek) April 1, 2022

Uhura’s back! One of the most rightly celebrated of Trek characters, Nyota Uhura was brought to life by Nichelle Nichols in TOS and reimagined by Zoe Saldana in the Kelvin timeline films. Now, Broadway star Celia Rose Gooding is taking on the role, with Uhura just starting out as a cadet in Strange New Worlds .

Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk

star trek strange new worlds sulu

Yes, James Tiberius Kirk himself will also appear on Strange New Worlds … eventually. Even though season one has yet to air, Paramount has already confirmed that The Vampire Diaries veteran Paul Wesley has been cast as the Enterprise’s future captain in the show’s second season, which is filming now. Wesley is the third actor to don the iconic golden jersey after William Shatner and Chris Pine.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off its 10-part debut season this May 6 on Paramount Plus.

What You Need To Know To Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek

" Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " is the 12th TV series in the franchise's history (when one includes " Short Treks ") and, thanks to the labyrinthine nature of Trek chronology , is the fourth series set prior to the events of the original "Star Trek" from 1966.

While one needn't be intimately familiar with said chronology to understand and appreciate "Strange New Worlds," it certainly — to borrow a commonly used colloquialism often used to describe an IP-saturated media landscape — rewards the fans. "Strange New Worlds" includes a cast largely made up of recognizable legacy characters borrowed from throughout "Star Trek," not least of which was Spock (Ethan Peck) a character who has appeared in the second most number of Trek projects (Spock is second to Worf, played by Michael Dorn). Indeed, almost every character on "Strange New Worlds" previously appeared on "Star Trek," or had a relative who previously appeared on "Star Trek."

To catch up with the legacy characters, /Film has compiled a list of where each of the characters came from, some of the more significant events in their backstories, and equip you with all the knowledge you need to be a well-informed Trekkie. You don't  need  to know all of this to enjoy "Strange New Worlds," but it'll fill in some key details, especially during the pilot.

The Cage and The Menagerie

The original "Star Trek" pilot, entitled "The Cage," didn't air on TV in its completed form until 1986. But by then, the events of the episode had already been accepted as "Trek" canon. In the pilot, Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) commanded the Enterprise with his first officer Number One (Majel Barrett) and his science officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ) to the planet of Talos IV, where Pike is kidnapped by a race of ultra-intelligent psychics who imprison him and feed him illusions for purposes of study. Pike also falls in love with a young woman who is also imprisoned on the same planet, although Pike is suspicious as to her role; does she too work for the psychics?

In "The Cage," one gets the impression that "Star Trek" is less an optimistic space adventure program and more a horror program, with monsters, illusions, scary psychic aliens, and an eerie tone. Early "Star Trek" overall shares its tone more with " The Twilight Zone " than with what it would eventually become. "The Cage" was re-worked into a new show with mostly new characters (Spock was the only holdover), with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) eventually taking command. Bones, Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty would all enter the show in the second pilot, called "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Chekhov would become a regular character in the show's second season.

"The Cage" would later be incorporated into Kirk-era "Star Trek" canon in a two-part episode called "The Menagerie." In that episode Capt. Pike was back, only now played by Sean Kenney, and with the character using a wheelchair, having lost his voice, the use of his body, and a portion of his face in a horrible accident. Spock takes over the Enterprise so that he may return Pike to Talos IV for mysterious reasons. Rather than explain his motivations, Spock merely shows Kirk "The Cage" in the ship's screening room. Yes, the bulk of the two-part episode is a rehash of old footage.

Keep Pike's accident and his injuries in mind, as Pike also plays a significant role in "Star Trek: Discovery."

Star Trek: Discovery season 2

"Star Trek: Discovery" debuted on CBS All Access (now Paramount+) in 2017, and it was an ambitious project, a series set about a decade prior to the events of the '60s "Star Trek." If one pays close attention to the chronology, it takes place after " The Cage ," but about eight years prior to "The Menagerie." At the close of the show's first season, the U.S.S. Enterprise appears to the show's title ship asking for help. At the outset of season 2, audiences were treated to the dashing, handsome Anson Mount in the role of Christopher Pike, as well as Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ) and a rogue Spock (Ethan Peck), who is on the lam for mysterious reasons. While the Enterprise undergoes a retrofit, Pike took command of the Discovery and led it on a season-long adventure that culminates in familial reconnections and time travel.

A major part of Pike's story on "Discovery" was his re-visitation to Talos IV, wherein he meets the same large-headed psychics, as well as the young woman he previously bonded with (now played by Melissa George). Pike also visits a cave containing Klingon time crystals (don't ask), which show him his future. Pike knows that he is fated to suffer a horrible accident and have his limbs, voice, and face effectively removed.

Knowing his fate will hang over Pike throughout the rest of his appearance on "Discovery" and continues into "Strange New Worlds."

Other characters as well

In addition to Pike, Spock, and Number One (named Una on the show), several other legacy characters appear in "Strange New Worlds."

Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) was originally seen in two 1966 episodes: "A Private Little War" and "That Which Survives." He was originally played by actor Booker Bradshaw. It was implied that the Enterprise had two main doctors, although after the two mentioned episodes, it was largely just Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley).

Nurse Christine Chapel, originally played by Majel Barrett, was featured throughout the original "Star Trek," and would be seen frequently flirting with Spock. In "Strange New Worlds," she is nurse to Dr. M'Benga, is still living through a wilder youth, and is played by Jess Bush.

La'an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) is the descendant of Khan Noonien Singh, the character played by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode "Space Seed" and the feature film " Star Trek II: the Erath of Khan ." Who her parents or her grandmother are haven't been explicitly stated. Khan was a genetically engineered superbeing who was banished from Earth following the Eugenics wars, and would eventually be found in cryogenic stasis in a few years time. La'an, then, bears the same genetic manipulation, setting her apart from her peers.

Lt. Uhura, originally played by Nichelle Nichols, appears as a young cadet on "Strange New Worlds," and is by Celia Rose Gooding. Uhura was the communications officer on the Enterprise, and is depicted as an eager linguist and language expert on the new show. Uhura's status as a language expert is a detail piggybacked over from the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot film.

So, for your checklist: Watch "The Cage," "The Menagerie," "A Private Little War," "That Which Survives," "Space Seed," "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and the second season of "Discovery," and you'll be as well-educated a Trekkie as the die-hards. Or you can watch it after reading this article. It's a good show, and it really does stand alone.

"Strange New Worlds" debuts on Paramout+ on May 5, 2022.

The official announcement stated that "the series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the USS Enterprise , as they explore new worlds around the galaxy." [1]

Executive Producer and Co-creator Akiva Goldsman told Variety , " We're going to try to harken back to some classical 'Trek' values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you've seen in either Discovery or Picard . ... I imagine it to be closer to The Original Series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece. " [2]

When talking to Deadline on 16 August 2020 Co-executive Producer Alex Kurtzman elaborated, " I think Strange New Worlds , under the guidance of [showrunners] Henry Myers and Akiva Goldsman, it's going to be a return in a way to TOS [ Star Trek: The Original Series ] . We are going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization. There will be two-parters. There will be larger plot arcs. But it really is back to the model of alien-of-the-week, planet-of-the-week, challenge-on-the-ship-of-the-week. With these characters pre-Kirk's Enterprise ... I think what people responded so much to in all three characters is this kind of relentless optimism that they have. And that they are at the young phase of their careers. " [3]

Production history [ ]

When the news of showrunner Alex Kurtzman 's five-year Star Trek development deal with CBS All Access was announced on 19 June 2018, a show dealing with Christopher Pike, Spock, and the USS Enterprise was not considered for inclusion in any Star Trek line-up. [7]

Star Trek: The Original Series characters, Christopher Pike , Number One , and Spock , were introduced for season two of Discovery and were signed only for that season. [8] [9] It prompted Anson Mount to quip with a "#WillActForFood" hashtag on his Twitter account, making it known that he and Spock performer Ethan Peck were on the job market again shortly after live-action production on season two had wrapped. [10] Following the positive reception to the second season of Star Trek: Discovery , fans circulated a petition in support more appearances of Mount as Captain Pike and Peck as Spock, including the idea of a full new series. [11] Mount expressed support for the fan petition, stating he felt "humbled and deeply touched by this amount of love" in an 14 April 2019 Facebook entry. [12] [13] Peck also expressed interest in returning to the role of Spock. [14]

Mount, Romijn, and Peck reprised their roles in three late 2019 season two episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks .

Inception [ ]

In January 2020, Kurtzman confirmed he and Akiva Goldsman were having "active conversations" about a new series involving the crew of the Enterprise . [15]

On 15 May 2020, CBS announced a new series "based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the USS Enterprise ." [16] The announcement included that Strange New Worlds would feature Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their roles from the second season of Star Trek: Discovery .

Development [ ]

TRR : " Hide and Seek " presented " The Cage " as the pilot to this series, as opposed to Star Trek: The Original Series .

Prior to its premiere, Paramount+ specifically suggested that viewers could prepare for the launch of the new series by checking out the following DIS Season 2 episodes:

  • Episode 1 - " Brother "
  • Episode 8 - " If Memory Serves "
  • Episode 12 - " Through the Valley of Shadows "
  • Episode 14 - " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 "

StarTrek.com presented its own list of episodes to watch before the premiere. In addition to the aforementioned Discovery episode "Through the Valley of Shadows", this list of original series episodes served more as a primer for familiarizing or refamiliarizing viewers with the series' cast:

  • " The Menagerie, Part I "+" The Menagerie, Part II "
  • " Space Seed "
  • " Journey to Babel "
  • " Mirror, Mirror "
  • " The Deadly Years "
  • " A Private Little War "

In March 2021 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection premiered at retail. A new starship miniatures partwork and product line, it would have featured Strange New Worlds starships, combined with ships from Star Trek: Discovery (after the release of issue 33 of the DIS partwork ) and Star Trek: Picard . The line's manager indicated that CGI assets of SNW's starships had not yet been received from the show's producers, as of February 2021, which was not that surprising as actual production on the new series had yet to start at that point in time. [17]

Eaglemoss' bankruptcy on 5 August 2022 thwarted all intents to release Strange New Worlds starships and none were, save one. Replicas of Pike's USS Enterprise though, had previously been produced by the company as part of the Discovery partwork collection, as it had already debuted in that series.

Why Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Has Me Worried About Ortegas In Season 3

What will become of the Enterprise pilot?

Her name is Erica Ortegas, and she flies the ship. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans have begged for Melissa Navia 's Ortegas to do more than that, and while she had a bigger presence in Season 2, there were still complaints about her not getting enough screen time. Ortegas will return to appear in Season 3 whenever that arrives for those with a Paramount+ subscription , but to say I'm worried about the character when the season actually premieres is an understatement.

I think there's a chance, maybe even a good chance, that Erica Ortegas will leave Star Trek: Strange New Worlds by the end of or during Season 3. I don't know the how or why, though there are some clear indicators pointing toward an exit for the character in the coming episodes.

Una and Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Erica Ortegas Is One Of The Few Expendable Characters On The Gorn Ship

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2's ending leaves Captain Pike in a bind as Starfleet orders a retreat after a Gorn ship captures a number of his crew. While we don't know which path Pike will choose, we can reasonably assume which characters are in little to no mortal danger considering they're around in TOS . Dr. M'Benga, for example, is still on the ship, and while Sam Kirk will die eventually in a tragic way, it won't be on that Gorn ship.

That leaves La'an Noonien Singh and Erica Ortegas as potential victims who perish during the Gorn capture. One of those characters has already had multiple episodes centered around her and even had a love story of sorts with James T. Kirk in Season 2. The other one flies the ship. Star Trek fans probably don't need me to spell out which is which, nor which one feels more expendable from a storytelling perspective.

We don't know the fate of Erica Ortegas, and as actress Melissa Navia told CinemaBlend, she wasn't sure where her character's fate was headed, but essentially embraced the unknown of what was ahead . That sounds like an actor who may not have been assured their character will make it to the end of the series, which, if Strange New Worlds is meant to set up TOS , makes sense.

George Takei on Star Trek on Paramount+

Strange New Worlds' Needs To Eventually Make Room For Sulu

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't about Kirk's crew, but following the latest arrival of Scotty at the end of Season 2 , it seems like the show is slowly progressing toward staffing the appropriate bridge crew for when the famous captain does take command. Ortegas may fly the ship on Pike's crew, but when Kirk takes over, that's Hikaru Sulu's job.

If we're talking about members of the TOS bridge crew who need their stories better fleshed out at this point, Sulu is at the top of the list. The chief helmsman wasn't given much to do in The Original Series , and while future Trek shows expanded on the character, there's value in learning more about his story. It would certainly make sense for Strange New Worlds to bring on Sulu and tell some of that story before it ends.

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

I would not be the person on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds who has to make a case of who is more deserving of a story comparing Ortegas to Sulu. Both deserve having the spotlight shined on them, but an argument could be made for Ortegas to be re-assigned to another ship and given the opportunity to appear elsewhere in other adventures. Many have waited a long time to see more of Sulu, but bringing him in will come at a cost. Are fans ready to say goodbye to Ortegas sooner so that he can get his shine?

Hemmer in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+

Erica's Story Arcs And Screen Time Has Largely Mirrored Hemmer's

Does anyone remember in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 when everyone was wondering why Hemmer was getting scenes but barely a chance to expand on his own story? There was a sense of, "Oh, maybe he'll get more stories in Season 2," and then bam, he was filled with Gorn eggs and had to sacrifice himself for the good of the rest of the crew.

Is the reason Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has kept us at arm's length from Ortegas is because they're setting her up for a heroic sacrifice? I know she was given the B-plot story in Season 2's "Among The Lotus Eaters," but she's mostly been relegated to sidekick status for a bulk of the adventures. Sure, she'll be the voice of reason in a scene or spout a funny one-liner, but little to actually progress her character arc.

This feels similar to the path Hemmer took, and we all know how it ended for him. It's entirely possible that Ortegas will need to do some wild stunt in order to free the rest of the hostages of the Gorn, but it will require a tremendous sacrifice on her behalf.

While possible, I'd have to think Strange New World s would balk at the idea of killing off Ortegas. Both co-showrunners are aware of the calls for more of her on the show, and it would seem like an easy way to anger a fair chunk of fans who have held out hope she'll have a bigger role in future episodes. Even so, there's no denying that there are some parallels between her and Hemmer's story, so here's hoping the same isn't true for their character exits.

As someone who loves Ortegas and wants to see more of her, I'm certainly hoping she'll be with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds until the very end. For all we know, that might end up being the case, especially since Paul Wesley revealed he doesn't think he'll be taking Anson Mount's job while the series is still running. As long as Kirk doesn't take command, there's always time for "More-tegas," but we'll have to wait and see if the writing staff and co-showrunners decide to give her more storylines.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is renewed for Season 3, but it could be some time before we see it air. Check out the first two seasons on Paramount+ in the meantime, and keep an eye out for upcoming Trek shows on the horizon.

When is 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 coming out, where can you watch 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, is there a trailer for 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, who's in the 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 cast, who are the creators of 'star trek: strange new worlds', when did 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 film, what's the plot of 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 about, is 'star trek: strange new worlds' getting a season 4, more shows like 'star trek: strange new worlds' that you can watch right now.

It's a huge sigh of relief when a spinoff of a classic like the original Star Trek (which ran from 1966 to 1969) is well done, polished, and gripping. Especially when that show stands out in a franchise with twelve - yes, you read that right - twelve corresponding series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which serves as a prequel to the original (and iconic) Star Trek series, follows Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) as he leads his crew through the galaxy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show, which premiered in 2022, was met with high critical acclaim from the beginning and continues to find fans with each new season - an impressive feat in a time when so many shows get lost in the streaming shuffle. Now renewed for a third season right after its Season 2 finale, here's everything we know so far about the next chapter in the epic space adventure.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window was from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Subscriptions to Paramount+ are available in two tiers: Paramount+ Essential (with commercials, $5.99/month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (commercial-free, $11.99/month).

WATCH ON PARAMOUNT+

With production recently ending, there is still no official footage from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. That said, we hope to get our first look at the new season sometime later this year. Stay tuned to Collider as we await more info.

Leading the charge is fan-favorite Captain Pike , played by Anson Mount. Mount is no stranger to the Star Trek world, as he also appeared in Star Trek: Discovery in 2019. His other credits include films like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Britney Spears -led 2002 drama Crossroads . Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

The series was originally set to film early in 2023 but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the series was delayed by several months. Thankfully, they recently wrapped up filming in Canada earlier this year. Anson Mount took to Instagram to celebrate the conclusion of filming.

Mount also wrote a heartfelt message to fans after concluding production, saying:

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on season 3, at least from me, there’s still a little bit of work to be done. I feel like I could sleep for a week, but I still have many travels and many things ahead of me to do, and I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shots here. Thank you for your patience, especially during the strikes, it wasn’t anyone’s intention for us to be delayed to that extent. Thank you for sticking with us, thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans, I am one of you and it’s because of people like you that I get to live out my dreams like this and I’ll never stop thanking you for having me in your house.”

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again.

To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

There are still many more stories to be told and strange new worlds to explore. In a surprise to no one, Paramount+ has already renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fourth season. Mount took to Instagram , saying:

"We’ll see you again in the spring when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes back into production for Season 4!"

The Mandalorian (2019-)

Disney+'s runaway hit The Mandalorian has taken the world - and the internet - by storm. Premiering in 2019, show creator and showrunner Jon Favreau ( Chef ) has confirmed that Season 4 has already been written. The series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ), as he travels through the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Oh, and let's not forget about his companion, the now-iconic Grogu AKA Baby Yoda . WATCH ON DISNEY+

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

In the spirit of revisiting classic sci-fi television, for an updated version of the original Battlestar Galactica , try 2004's refreshed version. While not entirely a remake, it offers a more modern view of the cult classic, which originally ran from 1978-1979. Starring Edward James Olmos ( Stand and Deliver ), Mary McDonnell ( Donnie Darko ), Jamie Bamber ( Law and Order: UK ), and, who can forget, Katee Sackhoff 's iconic Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the show is sure to hit that same, familiar space exploration note.

Lost In Space (2018-2021)

For another modernized take on a classic, try the remake of Lost in Space , based on the original that ran from 1965-1968. The Robinsons are a family who wanted to start over on a space colony (very relatable), but they end up on an uncharted alien planet instead and must struggle for survival. The remake stars Toby Stephens ( Die Another Day ) and Molly Parker ( The Wicker Man ) as Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and ran for three seasons on Netflix.

The Acolyte Hints at a Legendary Sith Lord as the Mysterious Master

'it's completely different': true detective season 5 gets update from showrunner, why criminal minds dropped this controversial spencer reid storyline.

Star Trek has come back in a big way during the streaming era. The reception to the various series has been mixed, but one that most fans can agree they love is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . The adventures of the original Enterprise under Captain Pike recaptured a lot of what was missing for a lot of fans, and the first season has been widely praised by fans and critics alike.

RELATED: 10 Wrong Lessons New Star Trek Learned From Deep Space Nine

The first season did a great job of bringing in classic characters from The Original Series , and that's something the show should keep up in Season 2. Star Trek has many great characters, and fans love to see familiar characters in prequels.

10 Pavel Chekov

The original Star Trek is timeless , which is one reason why SNW works so well for fans. So far, fans have seen several characters from TOS on the show, so bringing in more of the original crew could pay off. The youngest member of that crew was Pavel Chekov. Joining the ship as an ensign, he would be rather young in SNW 's timeline, but he could still appear.

Perhaps the Enterprise saves the young man and his family. Maybe he has a relative in Starfleet, and that brings him into the ship's adventures. Regardless, a younger Chekov would be a great guest star, even if he only plays a small role in Strange New Worlds .

The Klingons played a prominent role in the trailer for SNW . Klingons in the nu- Trek have been rather interesting, as fans saw them in a transitionary stage regarding their government and how they look. The Klingons of TOS looked very different from later Klingons because of the Klingon augment virus, so bringing them into the story in Strange New Worlds Season 2 would be very interesting for fans.

Kang was one of three Klingon commanders that Kirk encountered. He appeared in the episode "Day Of The Dove" and returned with the Klingon augment virus cured in Deep Space 9 's "Blood Oath" as a friend of Curzon Dax. It would be great to see him and what he's up to in SNW 's timeframe.

Koloth is another of the Klingons Kirk encountered. Koloth was the Klingon commander that came to Deep Space Station K-7 in the classic episode "The Trouble With Tribbles." It's among the most popular episodes of all time, making him a rather important character in Star Trek lore. He was later seen in DS9 's "Blood Oath," another Klingon friend of Curzon Dax.

RELATED: 10 Star Trek Quotes That Perfectly Sum Up The Franchise

Koloth is a beloved Klingon character, and getting to see him as a younger officer would be great. As a victim of the Klingon augment virus, it would be interesting to see how he deals with the non-infected Klingons seen in the Strange New Worlds Season 2 trailer. Star Trek fans love Klingon lore, and Koloth plays into that.

7 Mirror Universe Versions Of The Crew

Star Trek is no stranger to multiverses , and the most popular one is the Mirror Universe. This universe is one where humanity decided to conquer everything in its path. Star Trek has visited the Mirror Universe in TOS , DS9 , Enterprise , and Discovery , seeing how it's changed over the years. Discovery was heavy with Mirror Universe lore, all because of Empress Phillipa Georgiou, played by the incomparable Michelle Yeoh.

Some fans are tired of the Mirror Universe, but it's played a big role in the pre- TOS years. That's why it would be great to return there. Showing how the Mirror Universe has evolved is a big part of Trek , and getting to see mirror versions of Pike or Number One would be great.

6 T'Pol

Star Trek has used retcons often . A big example of this was Star Trek: Enterprise . The show retconned a lot but was anchored by characters that fans loved. T'Pol was the Vulcan first officer of the NX-01, sent by Vulcan High Command to watch the humans in their shiny new advanced ship. She played a big role in the ship's adventures and the time period.

T'Pol would almost certainly be alive in the 2259 or 2260 if Strange New Worlds Season 2 moves things forward a year. Actress Jolene Blalock was objectified as a character for her looks, so it would be cool to get to see an older T'Pol that wasn't just being used as a sex object. Seven Of Nine got this treatment in Picard , and T'Pol deserves her chance.

5 Hikaru Sulu

The original Star Trek got pretty weird . A moment that everyone remembers was a shirtless Hikaru Sulu brandishing his fencing foil in "The Naked Time," when the crew was infected with a virus that made them lose their inhibitions. Sulu was the ship's helmsman, flying the ship through battles, spatial anomalies, and exploratory cruises, and eventually became the captain of the Excelsior in the 2270s.

Sulu was a lieutenant in TOS , so he would either be in the Academy or an ensign in SNW . That means he could either show up on Enterprise on a training cruise or on another ship that the Enterprise links up with. Everyone loves Sulu and wants to see more of him.

Q stands tall among Star Trek 's greatest villains . Fans know that he is merely one of many Q, as there is a whole civilization of them called the Q Continuum. While Q and his people were created for Star Trek: The Next Generation , there have been beta canon sources, mainly novels like Peter David's Q Squared , that claim that TOS villain Trelane is a Q.

Trelane was the omnipotent villain of the TOS episode "The Squire Of Gothos." He had many similarities to Q, so it would be really cool if Strange New Worlds Season 2 established that he was one or perhaps explained him in a different way. Trelane isn't a well-known character but a deep cut that Star Trek fans would love to see in SNW .

3 Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Doctor Leonard McCoy was the chief medical officer of the Enterprise during Kirk's tenure as Captain. In SNW , the ship's head doctor is Dr. M'Benga, who got some choice plot lines in Season 1. No one wants to see McCoy come on and replace him at this point, but many fans want to see McCoy join the ship as a guest during the SNW years.

RELATED: 10 Forgotten Eras Star Trek Should Explore

McCoy was part of TOS 's main trio, making him a monumentally important character in Star Trek history. Bones lived until the TNG years, so he's been on other Star Trek shows. Bones' folksy, put-upon method of doing things was entertaining. It would be great to see him back, especially since his favorite ideological sparring partner, Spock, is there.

The Klingons are a powerful species , their warlike ways having evolved over the course of the Star Trek timeline. SNW is set in a time when the Klingon/Federation Cold War was getting started, so seeing familiar Klingons would be perfect. Kor first appeared in the TOS episode "Errand Of Mercy" as an antagonist before returning as a recurring character in DS9 , starting with "Blood Oath."

Part of a powerful house and infected with the Klingon augment virus at the time of his first appearance, Kor should definitely appear in Strange New Worlds Season 2. He's an important Klingon, and getting to see him in this earlier time would be great. There's a lot of potential for him in this time period.

1 Montgomery "Scotty" Scott

The Enterprise is almost a character herself and has been since the beginning. The chief engineer of the show is the one who makes sure the old girl keeps going, but no chief engineer loved the Enterprise like Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. Scotty joined the crew as a lieutenant commander, always repairing the ship and making sure that it had the power it needed, even if he had to exaggerate things in order to be looked at as a miracle worker.

The chief engineer of the SNW Enterprise — the Aenar lieutenant Hemmer — died and is dearly missed by fans. A perfect balm for losing a beloved engineer is bringing in another one. Seeing Scotty's first trip on the ship he loved would be magical.

…funny? joke but would you really have to pay for Starfleet Academy?

Trek has had trouble committing to being in the future. Money keeps creeping in to the Federation. It’s also why phasers keep becoming more like guns and less like phasers.

I don’t think variant covers are canon, folks. 🙄

Strange New Worlds Easter Eggs Bring Back the Very First Star Trek Adventure in a New Way

With “Among the Lotus Eaters” and a return to Rigel VII, Strange New Worlds is reminding everyone exactly when on the Star Trek timeline this show takes place.

Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.

The title of Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4 — “Among the Lotus Eaters” — is a reference to Greek Mythology, specifically, the idea of lazy, memory-hazy people called “lotus eaters” from The Odyssey . Star Trek referencing older books and myth is nothing new, but, as Trek approaches its 60th anniversary in just three short years, it now commands its own rich mythology.

In “Among the Lotus Eaters,” Strange New Worlds goes back to the roots of Star Trek , both in style, but also, in its deep cuts. Here are all the best references from Trek canon, which, really, we should all start calling “ Star Trek mythology.”

USS Cayuga

Captain Batel’s ship, the USS Cayuga appears here in another joint mission with the USS Enterprise . This previously happened in the season 1 finale, “A Quality of Mercy.” Whether or not the Cayuga is a Constitution-class ship like the Enterprise or the nearly-identical Sombra-class is up for debate right now.

Ad – content continues below

Batel mentions she picked up the “mariner’s keystone” on the planet Gault. This is probably the same Gault where Worf grew up, which, from the perspective of Strange New Worlds , is in the future.

This episode is all about Rigel VII, first glimpsed in telepathic flashbacks in “The Cage,” the very first Star Trek pilot episode from 1965. Number One mentions “we were there five years ago as a routine exploration of a class-M planet.” That would have happened in the year 2254, because it’s 2259 in the “present.” The entire backstory of “The Cage” occurs just before what Pike called “the fight on Rigel VII.”

Spock Injuries

Pike mentions that on Rigel VII, “we lost three people, we had to get to Vega colony before Spock’s injuries made it four.” Later he says that “Spock was bleeding out.” In “The Cage,” Spock walks with a limp, which was an intentional choice. At the very beginning of “The Cage,” Pike says that the Enterprise is headed to “…the Vega Colony and take care of our own sick and injured first.”

Pike’s Mistakes on Rigel VII

Pike mentions that “last time we went down there we were in uniform, I am not making that mistake twice.” In “The Cage,” Pike also blames himself saying, “I should have smelled trouble when I saw the swords and the armor.”

Subdermal Universal Translators

In order to communicate with the local Kalar, the landing party has “subdermal” universal translators. One wonders why these might not just be standard issue all the time? In Discovery , we saw the standard communicator working as a universal translator. In The Next Generation , it’s assumed that the combadge is also a built-in universal translator. Also, in “Patterns of Force,” Kirk and Spock had “subdermal transponders” injected into their arms, which were basically like homing beacons.

Is It the Same Castle?

In “The Cage” (and later, again in “The Menagerie”), the Rigel VII castle has a very distinct look. Is this meant to be the same castle? Probably not. In “The Cage,” Pike says, “I let myself get trapped in that deserted fortress and attacked by one of their warriors.” The castle here is certainly not deserted.

Pike Talking About Cages

When the landing party is captured, Pike says, “This is a cage.” More like this is “THE CAGE,” right?

Tellarite Sonnets

Ortegas teases Uhura about “staying up late and translating Tellarite sonnets.” The Tellarites are the old-school pig-like aliens, first seen in “Journey to Babel.” They are founding members of the Federation.

“I flew the Enterprise before you did.”

Number One takes over the helm from Ortegas and says: “I flew the Enterprise before you did.” This is an implicit reference to “The Cage,” but also, to Discovery season 2 and Short Treks . Prior to Strange New Worlds , Number One was both the flight controller of the Enterprise and the first officer, at the same time.

Personnel Files

Spock gives everyone a datapad with their specific personnel files. Later, when Spock loses his memory, he can’t read it. Is this because his native language is Vulcan? Does the TARDIS  universal translator not work on text? Also, a close-up of Ortegas’ data file has this detail: “Lt. Ortegas is a 23rd Century Starfleet Officer.” With all the time travel shenanigans last week, it’s interesting to note here that her CENTURY is specified.

The ship’s computer tells Ortegas that “officer’s quarters are on Deck 6.” This checks out with the TOS episode “The Ultimate Computer” in which we were told crew quarters were on Deck 6.

Follow the Path

Just like in “Encounter at Farpoint,” in TNG , the hallway lights-up to show Ortegas where to go. Riker had the computer guide him in a similar way on his first day on the Enterprise-D , though his memory was fully intact at that point.

Walker-class Starship

Ortegas has two starship models in her room — one that looks like the Enterprise , and another ship that looks like the USS Shenzhou , from Discovery season 1. The Shenzhou was a Walker-class ship, and within Trek canon, was supposed to be older than the Enterprise .

M’Benga and La’an

Although it has not been explained in dialogue, since the very first episode of Strange New Worlds , we’ve seen that M’Benga and La’an have a shorthand. A very specific hand gesture near the eye, lets us know they have some kind of inside understanding. When they both regain these memories, we see this same hand gesture, moving one finger under the eye, just as we did in the first episode of the show in season 1.

Pike’s Phaser Blasts

If you listen closely, the sounds of Pike’s phaser rifle blasts are very similar to the stun setting sound in The Original Series , which we also heard last year in “Spock Amok.”

Number One at Navigation

By the end of the episode, Number One is back up at the front of the bridge, this time, working the navigation station, next to Ortegas. This would seem to indicate that Number One can basically do any job on the bridge when a seat needs to be filled.

Pike’s Quarters

The end of this episode finds us zooming out from the windows of Pike’s quarters. And, from the look of it, it seems like that puts his room right near the front of the saucer section, slightly to the “left.” This probably means Pike’s quarters are on a different deck than everyone else’s. And those nice windows seem more than a little bit inspired by Ten Forward in The Next Generation .

The trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is arriving with warp speed levels of swagger, throttling up the action, adventure, and romance that viewers can expect from Paramount Plus’ flashy throwback series.

To be fair, some of that confidence is earned, as season 1 of Strange New Worlds built a compelling show around Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike , putting together a rock-solid crew for the U.S.S. Enterprise’s early days for an immediately compelling, if a bit uneven , first season.

Teases abound in the new trailer, which features the return of Paul Wesley as a young James T. Kirk from last season, and shows a bit more of surprise guests Carol Kane and the first live-action appearance of Star Trek: Lower Decks characters Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler (Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, respectively). Also Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) kiss. Not sure how I feel about that one, but I’m sure those crazy kids will figure things out.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 premieres on Paramount Plus June 15.

Captain Kirk does not want his pain taken away. If there’s one central message of 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , it’s the idea that human beings should be allowed to be messy, flawed, and a little sad, and anyone who offers you a way to cleanse your soul and be free of pain is likely a lunatic cult leader. This kind of iconoclastic humanism is so ingrained in the original 1960s Star Trek series that a huge number of episodes are preoccupied with Kirk unmasking false prophets in the form of oppressive automated computers, all-powerful aliens, and other Starfleet captains who decide to implement authoritarianism on a backwater planet.

On June 12, 1989, 20 years after The Original Series was canceled , William Shatner’s directorial debut doubled down on the classic theme of Kirk versus a Space Fraudster. In The Final Frontier , Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise go up against not only Spock’s off-his-rocker brother Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) but also a malicious false God. Thirty-five years after the movie’s release, this supposedly horrible Star Trek movie actually holds up pretty well, if you view it as an extended episode of the original show.

After the slam-dunk of The Voyage Home , the second Star Trek movie in a row directed by Leonard Nimoy, the franchise decided to let Shatner take the reigns. Unsurprisingly, The Final Frontier is a very Kirk-centric movie, despite ostensibly being about Spock’s weirdly emotional half-brother. After an opening scene in which Sybok recruits someone into a cult, The Final Frontier shifts to a camping trip where Kirk climbs a mountain in Yosemite National Park.

Captain Kirk falls off the mountain, only to be rescued by Spock and his sick rocket boots. Then Kirk, Spock, and Bones sit around the campfire, drink whiskey, eat beans, sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” and wax philosophical about their mortality. It’s charming and funny, with Deforest Kelley’s Bones in particularly good form.

Spock, Bones, and Kirk in their best camping duds.

But Sybok has taken several ambassadors hostage in an effort to lure a Federation starship to Nimbus III, a neutral planet that comes across as a low-rent Mad Max world. The Enterprise races to the rescue and falls into Sybok’s trap. Using his hypnotic “pain sharing” trick, he takes over the Enterprise , turning everyone into a mental health guru who doesn’t mind taking the ship to the center of the galaxy to find God. Kirk becomes the only person who refuses to get involved with Sybok’s Scientology-ish cult, but since the Enterprise ends up at the center of the galaxy anyway, they might as well stop by and see if God is there, just in case.

Fans of The Animated Series will note that the crew already visited the galaxy’s center in the 1973 episode “The Magicks of Megas-Tu,” in which a demonic-looking character named Lucien turns out to be a friendly, misunderstood alien. The Final Frontier flips this premise: the crew finds a malevolent false God who’s lured in Sybok and the Enterprise to help him escape a weird celestial prison. But that’s okay. Kirk loves this kind of thing, leading to one of the greatest lines in the entire franchise: “Excuse me... what does God need with a starship?”

With all of this hyperbolic philosophizing and introspection about the nature of the human soul, one might wonder why Trek fans don’t love this movie. Isn’t this kind of story what made the franchise famous? Yes, but the form of The Final Frontier is inferior to its function. Had this been a long episode of the 1960s show, it may have been a classic. Or, had the special effects, casting, and pacing all been a bit better, then it may have been viewed as a decent movie.

Kirk, Spock, Sybok and Bones prepare to meet God in 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.'

Kirk, Spock, Sybok, and Bones prepare to meet God.

But Luckinbill is tragically miscast as Spock’s brother, and the supporting cast of Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura all seem to act out of character, so the whole thing comes across more like a thought experiment than a film. Infamously, Sean Connery was Shatner’s first pick to play Sybok , but he chose to play Henry Jones Sr. in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade instead. In the summer of 1989, when The Final Frontier received less than kind reviews, it was clear Connery chose wisely.

But after all this time, The Final Frontier is charming enough to hold up against at least a 100 middling episodes of various Trek series. In fact, the 2022 Strange New Worlds pirate episode “The Serene Squall” brought back Sybok as a last-minute twist, but it's tough to argue that episode is somehow better than The Final Frontier .

That’s not to say The Final Frontier is a secret success, or that episodes like “The Serene Squall” are bad. But The Final Frontier has been judged by the wrong metric. Is it one of the worst Star Trek movies? Yes. But is it one of the worst Star Trek things ? No way. When you’ve got Captain Kirk going in for a hug and Spock saying, “Please Captain, not in front of the Klingons,” it’s hard to hate it. The Final Frontier wasn’t the most original Trek adventure, but like a faded photograph in a family album, time has made it feel like a cherished memory. A throwback when it was released, The Final Frontier now feels decidedly retro in the best way possible.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be Our Best Season So Far, Says Anson Mount

  • Anson Mount hails season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the best yet, with even bigger storytelling risks and surprises.
  • Season 3 wrapped production in May 2024, with a renewal for season 4 already in the pipeline, sparking high audience anticipation.
  • Mount teases exciting developments in season 3, including bold creative choices that will surpass previous seasons.

Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, enthusiastically calls Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 "our best season so far". Strange New Worlds season 3 wrapped six months of production right before Memorial Weekend 2024. While there is no release date yet from Paramount+, Strange New Worlds received an early season 4 renewal , with production expected to start up again in Spring 2025. Meanwhile, audience anticipation is sky-high, especially after the cliffhanger ending of Strange New Worlds season 2 in August 2023.

In an interview with Gold Derby , Anson Mount discussed the success of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Season 2 of Strange New Worlds regularly charted in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, and the series hit highs with its biggest risks, a comedic crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode. Without divulging spoilers, Mount teased the "even bigger swings" in Strange New Worlds season 3, promising that the musical "will not be the craziest thing that we did" by the time it's over. Read Anson's quote below:

I think its not just an exciting season, I think storytelling wise, development-wise, technically; its going to be our best season so far and a lot of that has to do with even bigger swings being taken. The musical episode will not be the craziest thing that we did or we have done by the end of this. Were feeling more ownership over what it is that were doing and realizing that it continues to resonate.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with an epic cliffhanger and here's everything known about when it will be resolved in season 3.

What Could Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Big Swings Be?

How to they top the musical episode.

It's hard to imagine how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 can top season 2's crossover and musical, but Anson Mount believes they do. Strange New Worlds season 3 is shrouded in secrecy, but a few dollops of information have emerged. For instance, J onathan Frakes is directing an episode of Strange New Worlds season 3 that's been touted as a "Hollywood murder mystery" , which could certainly be as out-of-the-box as Strange New Worlds ' musical.

Martin Quinn is also returning as Lt. Montgomery Scott AKA Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

Strange New Worlds is also debuting a new Science Lab set on the USS Enterprise , and many of the top directors from season 2 like Frakes, Chris Fisher, Valerie Weiss, Dan Liu, and Jordan Canning, are back behind the camera for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. It's safe to assume storylines like Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) leaving the Enterprise for her archaeological medicine internship with Dr. Roger Korby , and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh's (Christina Chong) will-they-or-won't-they love story with Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) will continue. It's best to believe Anson Mount that when it comes to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, audiences haven't seen anything yet.
