Whether you’re a prospective student or just visiting the Boston area, we invite you to explore our dynamic campus and experience firsthand how MIT is making a better world .

MIT is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, across the Charles River from Boston, in the vibrant innovation district of Kendall Square . Founded in 1865, MIT established a new kind of independent educational institution relevant to an increasingly industrialized America. Since then, the Institute has built a robust tradition of solving problems in the public interest at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Welcome Center

The MIT Welcome Center is open at 292 Main Street in Kendall Square , conveniently located next to the Kendall/MIT MBTA subway station. Stop by to get guidance about visiting MIT and pick up a campus map  (and to use the restroom, fill your water bottle, or access free Wi-Fi and power outlets). The adjacent green space is also a great place to have lunch or take a break. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding MIT holidays  and Institute closures.

The MIT Welcome Center is a gift of Tina and Hamid (SB 1977, SM 1978) Moghadam.

Campus Tours & Information Sessions

The Undergraduate Admissions office hosts virtual and in-person information sessions for prospective students. Visit mitadmissions.org/visit to register. Please note: We are unable to accommodate walk-in guests for information sessions, so please make sure to register in advance.

Prospective graduate students usually arrange visits through individual departments, though the  MIT Sloan School of Management  and select departments within the School of Engineering offer tours.

Getting Here & Getting Around

A great place to start your visit is at the MIT Welcome Center, located at 292 Main Street, Cambridge . Parking can be tough here! We recommend public transportation or a taxi/rideshare service (such as Uber or Lyft) to campus.

Via public transportation

Boston’s public transportation system is the MBTA , known as “the T.”

Subway : From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes and is free.

Bus : The 64, 68, and 85 lines stop near the MIT Welcome Center. The #1 bus  stops on Massachusetts Avenue, about a 15-minute walk from the Welcome Center.

Shuttle : The EZ Ride shuttle runs to and from Boston’s North Station, with stops at Kendall Square and around MIT’s campus (Note: EZRide is not operated by the MBTA; fare is $2 cash per trip).

From Logan Airport

Taxi or rideshare : Taxi fare from the airport is about $35–$40, and a rideshare service can range from about $20–$35. During non-rush hour, the ride will take about 15 minutes; during rush hour, it may take 30 minutes or more.

Subway : From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes.

  • South Station, Boston , is the closest train station. South Station is served by the MBTA Red Line, which connects to MIT at the MIT/Kendall stop.
  • Bluebikes is the Boston area’s public bike share program. There are several stations around campus for renting or returning a bike. Visitors may purchase an Adventure Pass , which is valid for 24 hours.

Parking in Cambridge and Boston can be expensive and hard to find. Whenever possible, park where you’re staying and use public transportation or a taxi/rideshare service. If you must drive to the campus, on- and off-street parking is available for a fee, but most public parking is not very close to the center of campus. More parking information is available from Parkopedia .

Student Life, website logo

Student Travel

There are two kinds of official student travel where you can use the MIT Sloan name: Study Tours and Treks. Both are supported by the MIT Sloan Student Life Office:

Study Tours : MIT Sloan International Study Tours are connected to class credit. They are comprised of six 3-hour class sessions and a 2 week traveling component. They are managed by teams of student organizers, staff & faculty mentors, and are a great way to learn about a region or a field by going on location!

Treks : MIT Sloan Treks are a form of student-led and organized travel. They can take place at any time of the year, as long as they do not conflict with classes, and are not for class credit. Treks are organized and run by MIT Sloan clubs, and most focus on professional development based on an industry or geographic location.

mit travel and tours

Traveling as an MIT Sloan student can open doors and get results that you might not get as a private citizen, so how can you use the MIT Sloan name when traveling?

Other Student Travel Opportunities

Action Learning Travel :

Action Learning embodies MIT's motto of mens et manus, or mind and hand. Each year, 15+ Action Learning labs are offered so you have the opportunity to apply your classroom learning to real-life challenges posed by host organizations. These half and full semester courses provide you with an immersive experience working with local, domestic and international organizations on diverse subjects ranging from analytics, global entrepreneurship to healthcare and sustainability. With your team, you will perform a range of analyses; from benchmarking best practices to analyzing stakeholder needs, and from researching new markets to comparing inventory tracking systems, along with so many other topics. Further, seasoned industry practitioners or mentors will guide you and your team as you go through this learning experience. As the world continues to change under unprecedented circumstances, consider taking an Action Learning course; you can not only learn, but make an impact on a real need. Learn more about Action Learning at MIT Sloan  here . Questions? Contact the Action Learning Office .

Martin Trust Center Travel :

The Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship's mission is to advance knowledge and educate students in innovation-driven entrepreneurship in a manner that will best serve the world in the 21st century. The Martin Trust Center offers three student travel opportunities throughout the year. Learn more about the Martin Trust Center here . Questions? Contact the Martin Trust Center for more information.

  • Silicon Valley Study Tour (SVST) : Held during the Spring semester SIP week, the Silicon Valley Study Tour (SVST) finds E&I Track students visiting founders and CEOs of startups, leaders in the Northern California venture capital community, and successful enterprises in the Climate Tech/Sustainability, FinTech, Health Tech, Mobility, Hard Tech, and SaaS industries.
  • StartMIT : For students who are interested in exploring entrepreneurship while here in school and are looking for an entry point, StartMIT is a 2 week course held every January during Independent Activities Period (IAP). We call the course "your on-ramp to the entrepreneurial world at MIT." The program includes a one-day entrepreneurship immersion trip to New York City.
  • MIT Civil Rights Immersion Trip : An immersive, student-led academic trip across the American Southeast that explores the history and contemporary legacy of the Black Freedom Struggle, popularly termed "the Civil Rights Movement."

Interested in learning about Chile's amazing observatories ? Curious about the engineering marvels of Northern Italy? These trips and more are available through the MIT Alumni Travel Program , which annually offers more than 40 unique trips to locations around the world. In the past year, more than 600 travelers took part in the MIT trips.

The trips, which are open to the greater MIT community, often feature MIT faculty or other expert scholars who add a learning component to each program. An excellent example of the program’s offerings is “ Berlin: Historic Treasures and Modern Marvels ,” a week-long program in Germany that took place earlier in summer 2013.

Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci Palace

The trip, which explored the architectural, cultural, and historic side of Berlin, included trips to more than a dozen museums, historical locations, and architectural spectacles. Close to 15 MIT community members took part in the trip, which also included day tours of German cities Dresden and Potsdam.

“The excitement went beyond sight-seeing,” says traveler Robert Hsiung MArch ’62. “The best parts of the trip were the learning experience in architecture, art, and history from our knowledgeable tour guide—he was first class—and the sharing of individual interests among our MIT alumni group.”

Pergamon Altar, built during the second century B.C.

The week-long history lesson touched on German-specific issues such as the transformation of East Berlin since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the restoration of Dresden after its bombing during World War II, and visits to the Jewish Museum and the German Historical Museum. The trip also explored a wider scope of European history, such as viewings of the Egyptian bust of Nefertiti, the Ishtar Gate, and the Pergamon Temple.

“My wife and I had enjoyed visits to Berlin's historical museum treasures on two earlier trips," James Kistler ’62, SM ’63 says. "But the Alumni Travel program provided a much more comprehensive understanding of the history of Berlin and Germany through the efforts of our tour guide, Stefan Albrecht. His superb commentary enhanced our understanding of the social, economic, and geopolitical elements that shaped Germany's history.”

Travelers connected with the MIT Club of Germany and current MIT students for dinner in Berlin.

Visit the MIT Alumni Travel Program page to explore upcoming programs. The 2014 schedule has been announced and features a trek a geology-based excursion of the Mojave Desert, a centennial celebration of the Panama Canal , and two trips geared toward families: a sight-seeing tour of China and a trip to the Galapagos that includes seven days aboard the cruise ship National Geographic Islander .
