What an amazing show!!!!! Mika was such an entertaining performer and had a beautiful voice and energy. During one song he jumped into the crowd by himself and during another he silenced the crowd and sang without a microphone!! Every song was performed with equal enthusiasm. I had such a fun time I miss it already

Mika is amazing.

He put on the most wonderful show that I have ever been to, his energy is infectious, they way he interacted with the crowd was outstanding, but most of all the surprises he added to his show were amazing - I felt truly blessed to have been there for it.

He Is a real animal on the stage. He literally Jump and run for Two hours whitout taking a breath. He also run into the public of the parterre With no bodyguards during a Song , threw balloons into the forum and used a piano whic somtimes rised up thanks to a platform. He also very good at singing. At a certain point he dropped the microphone, sileced the public and sang Happy ending in the hardest way possible

Mika today announced his 2022 North American tour presented by Indeed.com, the world’s number one job site. Taking place throughout April 2022, the singer’s tour will hit six cities across America and Canada. Tour dates will go on-sale Friday, December 17 at 10am local time.

Mika comments on today’s announcement, “Having had to cancel my North America shows because of the pandemic, crushed a part of me. It had been so long in the works and the excitement from my fans was so strong. That is why I am so happy to be back on the road with new dates in 2022! This is a new show, as the time during the pandemic made me re-evaluate the importance of gigs and how powerful intimacy can be, no matter how big the venue. An intense show, with new material, as explosive as it will be intimate. Stay tuned for more dates to be announced! See you soon!”

To showcase the power of music as a vessel for promoting empathy and equality at work, Indeed will celebrate Mika’s tour by hosting virtual hiring events at every stop, where industry professionals and fans will be able to apply for positions and network with like-minded companies. To document this journey, Indeed and Mika are hiring a Content Roadie, a dedicated ambassador who will share the tour and hiring events through their own eyes and ears on social media. Fans can apply for the position through the official Indeed website .

mika piano tour

4pm - Pre-show entertainment from 'Legacy Street Pianos', this is NOT on the studio stage and will be in and around the venue, likely the 'Social' area.

5pm - Studio doors open

6pm - Recording starts!

Recording will take place in The Hall with a capacity of 1,500 people. You are not allowed to take photos or videos during this event and by attending the concert you agree NOT to share any information about it until after the TV air date!

Bags will be checked on arrival and should be no larger than an A4 sheet of paper.

I couldn't find any information regarding bringing your own food and drink but I doubt it would be allowed, especially when the venue has it's own bars. However you can bring a bottle of water if you need to take medication.

I also couldn't find anything about the duration but I would imagine the concert will be anywhere between 1hr - 1hr 30 mins.

I didn't go to the first Piano concert, what was it like for all of you that did?

Did anyone come on stage first to explain things? And how do they do the ad breaks? I'm guessing Claudia would say "Time for a quick break" but they actually carry on filming?

I'm not sure if there was a break. I stayed on my seat in any case.

Yes, I guess it was about that, I don't think it was much longer than on TV.

In London there was a small café in the building, and as far as I know nothing was allowed to be brought into the hall itself to drink or eat.

You didn't have to hand in your mobile phone in London. However, security checked that you didn't take any photos or videos (fortunately, most people didn't try to do it).

Running time is 90 minutes so we can consider that it will end around 8pm.

There was a short intro before the recording started.

If I recall there was a "quick break".

But of course this time it can be different.

In general the atmosphere was very cool - no rush.

We could keep our mobiles but we were not allowed to film or to take photo during the recording.

Thanks for the info, look forward to seeing you guys there!

I'm really excited about this, I've never been part of a sit down audience for a TV show before, I'll admit it's not actually sunk in yet that I'm actually going! 😅

I keep checking my ticket email just to be sure!

With the last concert when you met Mika afterwards, was that because it was organised by MFC or did you just go to the artists entrance on the off chance?

And did anyone take gifts for Mika? I know it's not solely his  concert so I'm wondering if that would even be appropriate?

14 minutes ago, Hero said: It was a last minute organized meet. As in, we were already sat in the theatre when we heard he'd agreed!
1 hour ago, TinyLove_CJ said: Fingers crossed something similar might happen this time round too!

It would be nice, but if so, I hope they have more chance to organize it properly with security this time. Last time we got conflicting info so it was a bit of a confusing mess, which contributed to some people panicking about being front row to meet him, shoving, crowding, and generally behaving in a not very nice way. If I see similar this time, I'm going to call it out - whoever happens to be there. It's selfish, and it spoils it for other people. I haven't forgotten the old lady in the wheelchair who was hurt in the crush. Accidental, yes, but also completely avoidable.

Oh, and if he decides to meet the performers and other presenters in the social bar afterwards, for the love of god please don't go chasing after him like a pack of wild animals. That's his downtime. He's off duty. Leave him be. If he wants to engage in that setting, he'll come to us.  It's more respectful to give him the option, rather than impose.

1 hour ago, Hero said: which contributed to some people panicking about being front row to meet him, shoving, crowding, and generally behaving in a not very nice way.

Yes, I remember the reports about this from last time, certainly not the nicest of experiences. Security better be good at this venue!

I like to stay positive that I might  meet Mika but I won't get my hopes up about it, for me it's enough to just be seeing him this year! 😊

Shame you're not going to this, I hope you still get to see Mika on tour this year!

There are some fans out there that don't seem to show any respect for an artist when they see them coming out after a show. All they see is the "idol" and not the human being that just spent the last few hours entertaining them.

I don't understand it either when some fans go a bit over board and do start acting like animals to get to Mika. I've seen videos of it happening before, both during and after a concert. People seem to want to touch him or hug him at the most inappropriate times and I'm sure Mika must get annoyed when this happens.

Travel and accommodation is booked and knowing I'll be seeing Mika in 3 weeks is starting to feel a little more real! 😁

Concert outfit is also sorted, but guys I have this lovely piano scarf I got for my birthday last year (yes, blame the Keep it Simple mv!), do I wear it or is it too on the nose for this event?! 😆

20240316_083623.thumb.jpg.a17b88bd9794a8a8da371e6cc279199d.jpg

I will however have a rather special badge on my jacket on one side and also a little rose flower brooch on the other side too. I saw @Anna Ko Kolkowska  idea about wearing large flowers for Mika's tour, I'm not seeing him on the AC tour so this will be my own little nod to feel like I'm still taking part! 😊

You can wear the scarf! 😍 You might not want to keep it on once inside though, as it can get warm with so many people around.

I doubt he'll sing one of his new French songs (shame, but also understandable) but maybe something from MNIMH would also work 🤔

18 minutes ago, TinyLove_CJ said:    Getting very excited about this now!!! I'm beginning to wonder what Mika might perform, I imagine it will be towards the end again. I think it should be something with a piano line.

Over My Shoulder

Tiny Love, Blue Eyes (!)

Or maybe something from his UK tour like Popular Song? Or  Good Guys? Or Billy Brown?

Any of these and I think I'd cry! 💙

:(

19 minutes ago, TinyLove_CJ said: It would be lovely to see the WING piano there but sadly I doubt Mika will bring it to this

I've also been thinking about this. My guess would be he'll go with some classics that also sound good in an acoustic version like Relax or Love Today.  Personally I think Origin or Tiny Love would also fit the occasion. Or over my shoulder, yes!!

The Piano, Channel 4

Claudia, Mika and Lang Lang return to Channel 4 as The Piano is recommissioned for two further series, also commissioned a Christmas Special and documentary on the incredible Lucy

The heart-warming series that captured the nation, The Piano, is set to return for a further two series.    Claudia Winkleman will once again play host as she’s joined by Lang Lang, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest classical pianists of the modern era and Mika, universally recognised as one of the world’s great performers.

Commissioned from Love Productions, the new series of The Piano,   expanded from five episodes to seven, will create incredible opportunities for undiscovered pianists to showcase their talent on public pianos across the UK, including some new iconic locations.

In the spectacular finale of series one, viewers saw, 13-year old pianist Lucy win performance of the night with her awe-inspiring rendition of Debussy Arabesque at the Royal Festival Hall in front of   more than 2,000   spectators. Since then, having won the hearts of the nation, Lucy has played at the coronation concert in front of royal guests.

Fellow finalists, Sean, Danny and Jay have also performed at the Alistair McGowan Piano Festival; Sean and Jay are writing music together, and Sean and Danny are performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

The Piano was Channel 4’s   best-rating new format since 2017 (Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds).   The first episode   consolidated to 2.7m and the series average was the same [2.7m]    Viewers across the country heralded the uniqueness of the series and said it offered up a completely fresh perspective on music talent shows.

Additionally, Love Productions will be producing a   1 x 60 Christmas special which will see some of our favourite pianists from series one return to play festive numbers in front of commuters in London’s King’s Cross Station. Claudia will be on hand throughout to sprinkle some secret Santa moments and celebrity surprises on the occasion. Whilst Mika and Lang Lang will, as ever, be watching proceedings before stepping in to deliver a few festive gifts of their own.

Also, Lucy’s outstanding talent will be explored further in a one-off documentary which will follow Lucy and her piano teacher, Daniel. The 1x70 commission will delve further into Lucy’s connection to the world around her and how she communicates through   music.

Ian Katz, Channel 4, Chief Creative Officer said:   “ In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air.   It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it. From the 94-year-old widower who played in Glasgow station to find company to Lucy, the remarkable 13-year-old who stole the ‘nations hearts’.   It took viewers on a remarkable emotional roller coaster and I’m delighted that it will be coming back from more British stations, next year.”

Richard McKerrow, Creator’ and Executive Producer, Love Productions said: “It always felt somewhat of a creative leap so we were particularly thrilled with the success of The Piano on Channel 4.   Most especially the warm response from everyone who watched.   We’re extremely excited to be embarking on further series with the wonderful Claudia Winkleman at the helm along with Mika and Lang Lang and the opportunity to unearth a whole new range of unknown amateur pianists from across the country and to hear what music they want to play in public. ”

The Piano was commissioned by Channel 4 Head of Specialist Factual, Shaminder Nahal and Senior Commissioning Editor, Documentaries, Madonna Benjamin. Executive Producer is Richard McKerrow and Series Editor is Ted Hill for Love Productions.

The Lucy documentary is directed by Poppy Goodheart and executive produced by Kira Phillips.

TV Review: The Piano shows how music can bring happiness, despite difficulties a person faces in life

The piano, channel 4, sundays.

In recent weeks there has been a steady increase in the frequency of the piano playing echoing from the front room of my house.

Recitals of ‘River Flows in You’ and ‘Teardrop’ appear to be on repeat - there must surely be a summer school exam pending.

So amid my son’s focus of getting the right dynamics, harmony or melody for his exam pieces, I stumbled upon a talent/reality show that featured others in their quest for musical glory.

The Piano (no time spent there on coming up with a catchy title it would seem) is presented by Claudia Winkleman and features judges, singer Mika and concert pianist Lang Lang.

I clearly completely missed any mention of the first series of this Channel 4 show, so here it is returning for a second run in the hope of finding the best amateur pianist.

Claudia herself though has reservations about a second series.

“I don’t want you to take this wrong way, but when we we did this the first time I thought, ‘We’re done’,” she tells Mika and Lang Lang.

During the first episode, each contestant performs at Manchester Piccadilly train station, watched by the two judges who are hidden away in an upstairs staff room.

With varying degrees of musical skills and a different, at times moving, back story on how they came to learn the piano, each contestant takes their place in front of the piano in the station.

In each episode, after everyone has performed, Mika and Lang Lang will select one person to play at a special finale concert.

Everyone has a varying level and taste in music. First to take to the piano keys is boxer Ellis, who is a prime example of never judging a book by its cover.

Hailing from a council estate where he says there’s a “high crime rate but we’ve got a Costa, so it’s all good”, he learnt to play from a young age on a keyboard his mum had saved up to buy from Argos.

He tells of how he received lessons through council-funded schemes.

Playing Chopin’s Ballade No 4, he not only impresses the assembled audience in the train station, but also the celebrity judges.

“Do you think he’s aware of how difficult this piece really is?” asks Mika.

Talented nine-year-old Ethan is next. Not only is he already sitting his GCSEs, but his piano playing leaves the station in awe.

His father revealed that playing the piano allowed Ethan to express his emotions through music, more so following the death of his uncle.

During Ethan’s performance, Mika said: “It’s totally breaking all the rules in every single way. The rhythm is being thrown into the air, but...”

“... But it’s beautiful,” Lang Lang finishes.

Gap-year student Fred’s performance of Labrinth’s ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ impresses, but it’s dementia sufferer Duncan (80) who steals the show for me.

The retired solicitor plays, from memory, a piece he wrote for his wife Fran, describing how it “gives me such total feeling about the girl I found and the girl I married, the girl I love and always will”.

While Lang Lang says it’s “beautiful... very romantic”, it clearly touched Claudia who marches up to the judges hide-out after the performance and declares: “He is going to the concert, it is not a debate.”

She adds: “It is important to have somebody like that and the fact he can speak through the piano.”

Was it the best performance to secure his place in the finale? Probably not.

But it pulled on the heart strings and shows us how music can bring happiness, despite the difficulties a person is facing in life.

‘The most gifted musician I’ve ever met’ … Lucy Illingworth.

‘Musical soulmates’: the extraordinary story of The Piano sensation Lucy and her doting teacher

Lucy Illingworth wowed audiences on the TV talent show, but her journey started as a toddler with dedicated tutor Daniel Bath. Now, a documentary shows how they did it – and the shocking moment a royal disaster almost stopped them

L ucy Illingworth is the breakout star of the ivory-tinkling TV talent show The Piano . When the teenager, who is blind and neurodivergent, sat down at Leeds railway station, then 13, her rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in B-flat minor brought rush-hour crowds to a standstill and reduced bystanders to tears. Clips of the performance have clocked up millions of views online and it has been nominated for Bafta’s Memorable Moment of 2024 .

In the season one finale at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Lucy was crowned the unofficial winner of the Channel 4 show. She was duly invited to play at the king’s coronation concert last May. But as a new documentary reveals, the biggest gig of Lucy’s life was almost derailed when her lifelong piano teacher fell foul of royal security.

The Incredibly Talented Lucy – that is how she was introduced by the host, Hugh Bonneville, at the Windsor Castle event – tells her extraordinary story. Airing after the latest episode of The Piano this Sunday, the profoundly moving film traces Lucy’s decade-long friendship with her teacher, Daniel Bath, who describes them as “musical soulmates”.

In the film, when the royal occasion arrives, Bath admits he is “opposed to the idea of monarchy” and would ordinarily decline such an invitation, but his dedication to his pupil overrides such concerns. Today, he says: “It’s not something I’d normally do, but my duty is to Lucy. My views don’t matter. It’s all about Lucy. Where she goes, I go.”

Except, at the king’s concert, a wedge was driven between the pair. In a scene caught on camera, Bath is denied access because he “doesn’t meet the minimum security requirement”. His reaction is bafflement (“What? Why? Really?”) before he guesses that it’s probably due to his ties to Extinction Rebellion . A security guard is sent to collect his backstage pass because he is “high risk”. He laughs in disbelief: “They think I’m a threat.”

“It’s a good twist, isn’t it?” he says. “We applied for security clearance a few weeks beforehand, but just as we were about to set off from our hotel for the dress rehearsal, the BBC rang me and said: ‘I’m afraid the royal household say you’re not allowed in.’ To this day, I’ve not been given any reason why. I presume it was due to my involvement with climate change activism. That’s the only thing that could have been flagged up, but they’ve not confirmed it.” Has he ever been arrested for protesting? “No, I’ve just been on demos. I always have.

“I found the whole thing ironic for two reasons. First, the whole concert was themed around the need for climate action. Second, my activism is for the exact same reason I teach Lucy. As far as I’m concerned, nothing is more important than children and the future of our planet. That’s my entire motivation. It’s strange that I should be penalised for it.”

Bath usually accompanies Lucy on stage. He guides her to the piano, helps her find the pedals and remains on hand in case of wobbles. “Luckily, she had her wonderful teaching assistant, Lisa. I work hard, but I have it easy compared with Lisa. I get Lucy to do what she loves, which is play piano. All the other day-to-day schooling stuff is hard graft, so it’s lovely that Lisa got that moment instead.”

He was highly apologetic, fearing he had let Lucy down. “Even if I’m not there, she’ll call: ‘Daniel, Daniel!’ We have a very close, symbiotic relationship and she picks up on how I’m feeling. That’s why it was great she had Lisa and her mum, Candice, with her. I was confident she’d be OK. She’s not the one who gets nervous; I am. Besides, she wasn’t playing a massively complicated piece. If she’d been doing a Rachmaninoff concerto, I’d have been slightly more concerned.”

Happily, Lucy nailed a note-perfect performance of Bach’s Prelude in C major in front of 18 million viewers, prompting Queen Camilla to have what The Piano’s judge Mika called “a total fangirl moment”. Bath could only watch from his hotel room across town.

“It was strange watching it on TV. I had to sit through Take That, for a start. Obviously, I would’ve loved to be beside her, but, for once, I got to see Lucy from the audience’s viewpoint. I’m always sitting next to her, shaking with fear that something will go wrong and whispering the odd thing when I sense she might go off-piste. Lisa did all that, while I got to enjoy people’s responses. It was a nice reminder of: ‘Oh, yeah, she’s really good!’ And I loved the ending. Lucy always hams up endings, because she loves that communication and reaction.”

Bath is too kind to admit that he is angry about what happened. “It was just annoying. I’d spent two days in Windsor and they wouldn’t even let me in!” What riles him more is educational inequality. “Right now, 90% of UK children can’t access instrumental tuition. That makes me quite cross. The entire point of comprehensive schools is that every child has equal opportunities, but, when it comes to music, families can pay to receive better provision. It’s unfair and un-British.”

Lucy Illingworth and her piano teacher, Daniel Bath.

In the documentary, Bath says the experience “hasn’t exactly made me warm to the monarchy”. He laughs when reminded of his phrasing. “Well, I was brought up to be polite. Being antagonistic doesn’t help anybody. You’ve got to bring people along with you. That’s my approach to education. We’re all in this together. Society is everyone.”

Bath met Lucy when she was three. He has been working closely with her ever since. Lucy was born with cancerous tumours in her eyes, while a chromosome 16 duplication means she is developmentally delayed; she has autistic traits and is largely non-verbal.

Nursery teachers at her special school in Halifax noticed how musical she was. Even as a toddler, Lucy could play nursery rhymes faultlessly on a toy keyboard and hit a glockenspiel with immaculate rhythm. They contacted the Amber Trust , a charity that provides musical opportunities for blind and partially sighted children, where it was discovered that Lucy had perfect pitch. The charity advised finding a piano tutor.

after newsletter promotion

Enter Bath. “I’ve worked a lot with children with additional needs, teaching in unconventional ways,” he says. “Straight away, I realised Lucy had an incredible understanding of music, but she didn’t have any technique. Her hands were tiny. I’ve spent the past decade training her in proper finger patterns and introducing her to repertoire.”

He devised a method whereby he played the piano while Lucy put her hands on top of his, following his hands along the keys, feeling which fingers were doing what. “When she was a baby, Candice would put on Classic FM to help her relax. Lucy just absorbed it all. Wagner, Beethoven, Bach – she remembers everything she hears, even just once, then tries to play it.

“Sometimes, it’s a white-knuckle ride: ‘Oh, you already know this Mozart piece? Al right, let’s go.’ It’s by no means a normal piano-teaching experience, but it’s very exciting. She’s the most gifted musician I’ve ever met.”

Bath says Lucy’s virtuoso ability “makes you rethink how the brain works – and how the heart works”. He is palpably proud that the world is being wowed by her gifts. For him, though, his star pupil represents something wider.

“As well as spending lots of time with Lucy, I run a charity called Music for the Many , which was inspired by her. We work to overcome the barriers that stop children accessing music education and raise funds for free instrumental tuition.

“Lucy’s performance going viral shows that, if you give a child the chance, that’s what you can get – something so magical that it touches people all over the world. She’s a great example of why all children should be given the same opportunities. There are thousands of Lucys out there in our communities. Music can help them flourish. Hopefully, the documentary will spread that message.”

How is Lucy? “I just finished a lesson with her, actually,” says Bath. “Lucy’s on brilliant form. She learns at a fast pace, so her music has moved on a lot since the documentary was filmed. We’ve been in the recording studio, putting together an album of Lucy’s greatest hits, as it were. It’s early stages. You’ve got to take it step by step, walk with her in her way.”

Bath admits that meeting that talented toddler has changed his life. “Lucy’s the best thing that ever happened to me. She inspires so much of my work. When everyone hears her play, it makes them question their assumptions about what’s possible.

“People with disabilities and learning difficulties are still under-represented and underserved. It’s made me even more determined to fight for music opportunities for all children. If the education system says we can’t afford it, that’s nonsense. For a lot of children, music is vital. Lucy is the living embodiment of that.”

The Incredibly Talented Lucy airs at 10.05pm on 5 May on Channel 4

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Piano alumna Brianna Matzke premieres TREMOR project at American Sign Museum

The performance project focuses on the intersection between art and disability.

headshot of Rebecca Butts

Story by CCM Graduate Assistant Lucy Evans

When pianist Brianna Matzke (MM Piano Performance ‘11, DMA Piano Performance ’14) was diagnosed with an essential tremor in her hands in 2020, she kept the diagnosis private.

“I was afraid for my professional career,” she says. “Not because I was worried about the shaking—I was already dealing with the shaking for many years at that point… what I was worried about was the stigma.”

A progressive neurological disorder, essential tremor affects an estimated 10 million people in the United States. For a professional pianist, the diagnosis brought with it concerns over how she would be perceived as a performer and artist.

Brianna Matzke. Photo/Provided.

“I didn’t want people whispering behind my back saying, ‘Oh, she probably played poorly on that performance because she has an essential tremor,’” Matzke explains. Though, she notes, she doesn’t believe her tremor has affected her own artistry. “I’ve never known anything else,” she says. “Everybody misses notes when they perform… I could not tell you when I missed notes, if I missed it because I’m just a human or if I missed it from the tremor.”

TREMOR is   a performance art project created in response to Matzke's diagnosis. It features a world premiere piano concert and panel discussion at 6 p.m. on May 5, 2024 at the American Sign Museum . The project also includes an art opening, with musical responses from local new-music ensemble concert:nova on April 28 at The Well .

It’s my way of taking control of the narrative, claiming [my essential tremor] as part of my identity while also saying that it is not a flaw in my artistry, but in fact, at the heart of it."

Brianna Matzke

In addition to her career as a pianist, Matzke is the founder and artistic director of  The Response Project , a commissioning initiative “that asks composers and artists to create new music (usually for the piano) and new works (of many disciplines) in response to a preexisting work or idea.” Since 2015, the Response Project has performed new works responding to Karl Stockhausen’s  Mikrophonie,  Bob Dylan’s 1965 album  Highway 61 Revisited , the phrase “On Behalf,”  the deep listening meditations of Pauline Oliveros , and more.

The Response Project's newest installment, TREMOR, is presented in partnership with  concert:nova ;  Visionaries + Voices , an organization supporting Cincinnati artists with disabilities; and the  International Essential Tremor Foundation . The program explores “perceptions of ability/disability, personal expression in the face of misunderstanding, and belonging in a world ill-equipped to welcome.”

“It’s my way of taking control of the narrative, claiming [my essential tremor] as part of my identity while also saying that it is not a flaw in my artistry, but in fact, at the heart of it,” says Matzke.

Matzke selected each of the eleven composers and artists who are featured in TREMOR. “I wanted to have a wide range of artistic and personal standpoints represented in the responses,” she says. “Many of the artists identify as having a disability, but not all of them. Some of the artists have just done work that explores themes of authenticity, or being misunderstood.”

Cincinnati's American Sign Museum. Photo/ Alias Imaging.

The concert at the American Sign Museum features original compositions by Molly Joyce, Hanna Benn, Matthew Evan Taylor, Adeliia Faizullina and Forrest Pierce. The event at The Well featured musical responses to visual artwork by Britni Bicknaver, as well as five artists from Visionaries + Voices: Nick Kraft, Rosalind Bush, Milo Gleich, Vince Cole and Linda Kunick.

Beyond the two events in Cincinnati, Matzke plans to take TREMOR on the road while on sabbatical from her position at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.  She hopes the program will lead to a greater understanding of how people of all abilities and identities exist in the world.

“I really believe that if people learn to be curious and listen to music and look at art with open ears and open eyes, that it can help them practice opening their hearts as well,” she says.

“On a more specific level, I really hope that audiences understand that virtuosity at your art form does not necessarily lead to an interesting performance,” she explains. “I am so much more interested in authenticity through our human nature — which is a flawed nature that provokes beautiful art and beautiful music.”

Visit The Response Project website to learn more about TREMOR and the artists involved. Reserve tickets for the event at the American Sign Museum.
