SYNOPSIS: Light snow will continue to spread across central, southern, and eastern Wyoming Christmas night, with the heaviest snow falling across the south and east. Snowfall totals will generally range from 1 to 3 inches, with little snowfall anticipated in the Big Horn Basin. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are possible in Sweetwater and southern Lincoln counties where winter weather advisories are in effect until 11 PM Christmas night. The snow will gradually decrease from west-to-east late Christmas night and Saturday morning. Clearing skies will leave bitterly cold temperatures over the weekend, with lows dipping below zero escpecially across the low elevations of the west.

Impact to travel will continue across southern, central, and eastern Wyoming Christmas night into Saturday morning. The snow and wind will combine to create slick roads and reduced visibilites at times . Those with outdoor plans should prepare for the return of winter conditions. High temperatures will only be in the teens Christmas and Saturday, with overnight lows below zero. Clearing skies Saturday night will set the stage for lows Sunday morning to be well below zero, particularly in the basins and valleys of far west Wyoming. Those areas of the far west could be 15 below to 30 below zero by sunrise Sunday. Anyone with backcountry activities should also keep up-to-date on the latest avalanche conditions and forecasts , as fresh snow on a weak base could elevate the chances for avalaches.

115 Million Americans Expected to Travel over Christmas, New Year’s

Second highest year-end holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

christmas travel weather

WASHINGTON, DC (December 11, 2023) – AAA projects 115.2 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the 10-day year-end holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of domestic travelers is a 2.2% increase over last year and the second highest year-end travel forecast since 2000, when AAA began tracking holiday travel. 2019 remains the busiest Christmas and New Year’s travel period on record with 119 million travelers.

“This year-end holiday forecast, with an additional 2.5 million travelers compared to last year, mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2023,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “More Americans are investing in travel, despite the cost, to make memories with loved ones and experience new places.”

christmas travel weather

Airports are expected to be the busiest they’ve ever been over the Christmas and New Year’s travel period. AAA projects 7.5 million air travelers this holiday season, surpassing 2019’s record of 7.3 million passengers. Average ticket prices are slightly lower than last year. According to AAA booking data, the average price for a roundtrip ticket to Orlando this holiday season is $613, down from $735 last year. A roundtrip ticket to Las Vegas is $508 now compared to $705 in 2022. “It depends on your desired route and destination. There are last-minute deals to be found, but if your preference is a nonstop flight with seat selection, AAA recommends booking well in advance and protecting your investment with travel insurance,” Twidale added.

The number of people traveling by other modes, like bus, train, and cruise, is projected to surpass 2019. AAA expects more than 4 million Americans will take alternative transportation over Christmas and New Year’s compared to 3.66 million in 2022 and 3.89 million in 2019. Demand for cruises has skyrocketed post-pandemic, and the industry is now preparing for the wave of bookings that traditionally happens at the start of the new year. “Savvy travelers know that right after the holidays is the best time to book a cruise,” Twidale said. “That’s when cruise lines offer some of the best deals, and AAA members get exclusive benefits in addition to those discounts.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says there will be several days of potentially bad traffic during the 10-day holiday period. Saturday, December 23, and Thursday, December 28, will be the most congested days on the road. INRIX also says Saturday, December 30, when many people will be heading back home from their holiday destinations or traveling for New Year’s Eve, will see an increase in traffic compared to a normal Saturday. The best times to hit the road are before lunchtime or after 7pm.

“Nationwide, drivers could see travel times up to 20% longer this holiday season. In major metros, especially in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC, drivers could experience nearly double the typical delays,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Avoid peak commuting hours and use traffic apps, local DOT notifications, and 511 services to minimize holiday travel traffic frustrations.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

This holiday season, many travelers are heading to warm weather destinations like Florida and the Caribbean, tourist hotspots like New York and Las Vegas, and European cities like London and Rome. Here are top domestic and international destinations, based on AAA flight booking data.

Airport Parking Tips

With a record number of air travelers expected this holiday season, AAA recommends travelers plan ahead and take precautions when driving to the airport and parking their vehicles.

  • Reserve a parking spot ahead of time to save time and money.
  • Choose a well-lit, secure garage.
  • On-site garages tend to be more expensive but offer convenience and peace of mind given their proximity to the terminals.
  • If choosing off-site parking, look for reputable businesses like The Parking Spot which is securely fenced and offers a shuttle to the airport (AAA members get a discount).
  • Opt for covered parking, if you live in an area expecting inclement weather.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle.
  • Lock doors and roll up windows.
  • Take a photo of your spot to remember where you parked.
  • Keep your ticket – and receipt, if you prepaid – handy to show when exiting.

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of October 9, 2023.

*Year-End Holiday Travel Period

For the purposes of this forecast, the year-end holiday travel period is defined as the 10-day period from Saturday, December 23, 2023 to Monday, January 1, 2024.

'Tis the season to check AccuWeather's white Christmas forecast as long-range meteorologists provide a peek at what the holiday weather could look like and which places have higher-than-normal chances for snow this Christmas.

By Adriana Navarro , AccuWeather staff writer

Published Dec 1, 2021 8:56 AM PDT | Updated Dec 1, 2021 11:38 AM PDT

Dreaming of a white Christmas? Find out who has a greater than normal chance in AccuWeather's white Christmas forecast.

With a growing number of places across the United States getting their first snowflakes of the season, it's once again that time of year to break out the hot chocolate and look ahead at the chances of a white Christmas across the contiguous U.S.

A climate pattern well-known for bringing precipitation to the northern tier of the country may tip the scales on which areas get a white Christmas or just a handful of flurries -- if that -- this year.

To forecast what kind of weather the different regions of the U.S. will have a month out from the big day, AccuWeather's team of long-range forecasters, led by Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, looked to key patterns that could favor snow in time for the holidays this winter.

christmas travel weather

La Niña , a phase in which sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean drop to lower-than-average levels for an extended period of time, was one such pattern that played a major role in drawing the map. The big thing to know about La Niña is that it tends to steer storms northward, cutting the southern portion of the U.S. off from moisture.

With the La Niña phase in place, areas across the Northwest, upper Plains and interior Northeast will have a higher probability than average of having a white Christmas. However, the same cannot be said for the lower half of the nation.

AccuWeather's criteria for a "white Christmas" centers around having at least an inch of snow on the ground for the holiday -- a qualification that is difficult for many warmer locations in the U.S. even without a La Niña pattern.

"It's the southern areas that may be in hurting shape because La Niñas are usually northern track storms, and if we have this lull in December, we may have some issues across some of the southern tier," Pastelok said, suggesting that Americans living across lower latitudes and dreaming of a white Christmas shouldn't expect those dreams to become a reality.

christmas travel weather

In addition to the storm track preventing snow from reaching places to the south, chances of snow on or around Christmas are lower across the mid-Atlantic, Southeast and southern Plains as temperatures just may not be cold enough for snow to fall and remain on the ground.

Even areas that historically have a less than 5% chance for snow on Christmas Day will have a lower probability for snow compared to normal. Areas with these extremely low chances stretch through the Gulf Coast and up the Eastern Seaboard and into southern New England. While the Northeast is forecast to have below-average chances of a white Christmas, probabilities lean closer to normal, and snow is likely to be on the ground in higher elevations.

"We're actually kind of in that normal zone for [the Northeast] just in case we get one of these sneaky, late-December systems coming in there," Pastelok said. "But I do feel like the probability of a white Christmas in Boston, New York, D.C. and Baltimore is slightly lower" this year.

With the La Niña phase favoring a northern storm track, the southern branch tends to get cut off most of the time, Pastelok said, but he noted that there have been some exceptions. During the winter of 2020 into 2021, systems early on dipped into the South with some reaching all the way into Mexico. However, Pastelok said that this year, conditions are set up differently and the Southern states should have "more of a traditional La Niña" pattern, at least during the first part of the season.

The same applies to the southwestern U.S., and fewer storms could greatly impact not only ski resorts but also areas that rely on a healthy snowpack to ease drought conditions.

The American Southwest has endured a long, ongoing drought stretching from Southern California into New Mexico. Not even the Great Salt Lake has escaped the impacts of the intense heat and lack of rain over the decades .

"The upper-level high has been pretty pronounced across the Southwest, and that has caused temperatures to come up. It's caused a lot of dryness to return to these areas," Pastelok said. Forecasters believe that this high will pulsate throughout the winter season, allowing the storm track to drift southward from time to time into Central California, the central Rockies and Colorado this winter season. However, many of the same areas have historically had a less than 5% chance of getting snow over Christmas -- and those chances are expected to be even lower this year.

As of Dec.1, Denver, Colorado, has recorded 224 consecutive snowless days as warm and dry conditions continue across the area. The last time the Mile High City received measurable snow was on April 21, 2021. On average, the Denver International Airport measures 9.1 inches of snowfall during the meteorological fall , and the city typically receives its first measurable snow by Oct. 18.

In contrast, areas in the Northwest -- a region that has also been struggling with drought -- are likely to have higher-than-normal chances of snowfall, especially in the higher elevations.

Oregon and Washington state, in particular, have endured the intense repercussions of drought, especially after the deadly heat wave that killed at least 96 people in Oregon alone during June , The Guardian reported.

christmas travel weather

Due to the La Niña storm track, however, they are two states most likely to have a higher-than-normal chance of a white Christmas, along with western Idaho and portions of Northern California and Nevada. Any precipitation would be welcome in these specific parts of the West if only to buffer the areas from drought conditions during the upcoming summer.

The Midwest will be more of a mixed bag in terms of what to expect for the holiday.

A swath of the region across the central Plains into the Great Lakes area is likely to have a higher chance than normal to get a white Christmas, including cities such as Omaha, Chicago and Cleveland.

However, moving farther south, the chances of a white Christmas start to become slim to none. Rain may overtake snow through Christmas in the Tennessee Valley to the lower Ohio Valley, according to AccuWeather forecasters, making it difficult for any snow that does fall to remain on the ground.

A severe arctic storm could threaten holiday travel across the U.S.

Millions of Americans may want to reconsider their holiday travel plans, as bitter cold, biting wind and heavy snow are expected across the U.S. this week, imposing treacherous conditions just days before Christmas.

A bulletin from the National Weather Service (NWS) says a "strong arctic high pressure system," was sweeping down from Canada on Tuesday and appears poised to march towards the Great Plains, the Midwest and onto the Southeast on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, bringing life-threatening blizzard conditions and cold weather systems across 17 states.

Heavy snowfall and limited visibility caused Vancouver International Airport to temporarily shut down Tuesday, stranding scores of passengers. That could be a sign of things to come for holiday travelers in the U.S., as the frigid weather system moves across the country this week.

A man clears a driveway after a snow storm passed through northern Minnesota last week. Forecasters say another big storm is expected to hit the region this week.

At least 250 flights into and out of the Seattle-Tacoma airport were cancelled Tuesday as heavy snow fell there, according to the tracking site Flight Aware. The Cascade Mountains in Washington state were seeing the heaviest snowfall on Tuesday, but nearby lowlands in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming could see a foot of snow, according to the NWS. The region could see another blast of snow and ice on Thursday.

The incoming arctic front will then cross over the northern Rockies, Great Basin and Northern Plains regions, sending temperatures plummeting as low as minus 30 degrees, with winds gusting at up to 60 mph.

Snow is likely to move into parts of Nebraska, Kansas, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin on Wednesday. By Thursday, blizzard conditions could hit the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions, including Chicago, potentially causing significant flight delays and cancellation at O'Hare International Airport, one of the nation's biggest airline hubs. The major travel hub cities of Denver, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis are expected to be impacted, too.

For the eastern U.S., heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday could result in snow or sleet in the Appalachian states on Thursday.

christmas travel weather

By Friday, temperatures could hit the season's lowest in what is only the first week of winter. Even northern Florida cities like Jacksonville and Tallahassee could see a chill as low as 20 F on Christmas Eve.

Most major airlines, including United, American, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest, are offering to waive change fees and fare differences for those wanting to change flights so they can travel before or after the storm, within small rebooking windows.

"That allows travelers who have tickets now and throughout the holiday week to take a look and reconsider," says Kathleen Bangs, spokesperson of the tracking site FlightAware.com. "Reconsider what day you want to go on, maybe reconsider the route if you have a connecting city, and reconsider possibly just changing that ticket to later on in the week or even banking that ticket for later use."

Her advice to all travelers this time of year:

" You really need to have a backup plan" Bangs says. "And that could mean anything from a secondary ticket on a different airline that leaves later in the day or perhaps the next morning. It means a reroute through another city where perhaps you get within a couple hundred miles of your destination and then you rent a car or you take a train."

Bangs says that in this weather there's a chance any flight could be canceled at any time, and it may be difficult to get a hold of a representative from an airline.

AAA says of the 113 million Americans traveling this holiday season, more than 90% of them will be driving. And with forecasts calling for blowing and drifting snow, as well as whiteout conditions in some parts, they should proceed with extreme caution, forecasters say.

"Low visibility will create even more dangerous travel conditions on top of snow covered roadways," the NWS says. "Additionally, the strong winds could lead to potential power outages from the Midwest to the Northeast."

"It is imperative that travelers check the latest forecast before venturing out."

An outage that left 180,000 without power across New England over the weekend was resolved by Monday, but the Associated Press reported that attempts to bring extra utility workers into the state ahead of this week's storm were stymied by slick roads.

Police across New England also said they responded to hundreds of crashes and stranded vehicles, according to local media reports.

Frostbite is another risk for those trying to brave the cold, the NWS says. Subzero temperatures in some parts of the U.S. this week could lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Those venturing outside should dress in layers, cover their skin and change into dry clothing as soon as possible. But, experts say, the best prevention by far is simply to stay indoors.

Christmas travel weather forecast includes rain, snow and storms in some areas

christmas travel weather

Christmas is almost here, and millions of Americans will be traveling by vehicle or plane over the next few days. But how will the weather impact your holiday plans?

Folks in the central and western U.S. are expected to see some travel delays because of weather in the days leading up to Christmas, forecasters say. This includes a potential snowstorm in the Rockies and Plains over the weekend.

"The bulk of the rain and snow that could pose travel headaches through Christmas Eve (Sunday) will be in the central and western states," said Weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. He added that much of the East Coast will stay dry during this time, with high pressure in control.

Bad weather in the West

On Thursday, heavy rain was forecast to continue across Southern California, likely causing further travel problems in and around Los Angeles and San Diego, the National Weather Service said. The rain will also create numerous areas of flash flooding with narrow canyons, gullies, and burn scars the most vulnerable areas. In addition, many streams may flood, potentially affecting larger rivers.

By Friday and into Saturday, the rain will taper off in Southern California as the storm moves into the Desert Southwest. Phoenix, for example, will see over an inch of rain on Friday, which will impact air and ground travel, the weather service said.

The Pacific Northwest will also see its share of weather woes on Friday, with rain forecast along the coast and in the valleys, while several inches of snow falls in the Cascades. "Those with pass travel in mind Friday into Saturday will want to make sure to stay up to date on the latest forecast updates," the weather service in Seattle advised.

By Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day, most of the Far West will see benign weather, AccuWeather said.

Storms in central US

"A round of wet weather will cross the southern Plains from Thursday into Friday, bringing the potential for heavy rain to cities such as  Oklahoma City ,  Dallas  and  Houston  by the end of the week,"  AccuWeather  senior meteorologist Heather Zehr said.

The central U.S. will see more rain by the weekend, Zehr said: "After a short break, another round of potentially travel-disrupting rains can move through over the weekend. This rain may linger into Christmas Day in some places."

Snow was becoming increasingly likely to cause travel troubles in the northern Rockies and northern Plains by the weekend, forecasters said. According to AccuWeather, a belt of heavy snow was expected to fall across portions of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

This includes the Denver metro area and Denver International Airport, where 2-4 inches of snow is forecast, AccuWeather said.

Calm, quiet in the East until Christmas

For many travelers on Thursday and Friday, conditions will be fairly good because of high pressure promoting tranquil weather across most of the East Coast, AccuWeather said. Key travel hubs in the East, such as  Washington ,  New York City ,  Boston  and  Atlanta , should face limited weather-related delays or cancellations.

The quiet weather in the East is expected to continue into the weekend before going downhill on Christmas Day. "By Christmas Day, some of the wet weather will inch closer to the East, especially the Southeast states," Dolce said. "Thereafter, a storm system could pose weather-related travel headaches to much of the East in the days after Christmas, but details are still uncertain."

Christmas holiday forecast: Warm in the East, stormy in the West

Travel will be difficult in the western mountains, one of the few places assured a white Christmas in the Lower 48

christmas travel weather

AAA is predicting that 109 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more to celebrate the holidays between Thursday and Jan. 2. That includes a threefold uptick in air travel compared with last year. The weather could throw a wrench in the plan for some, though many areas will enjoy tranquil, balmy weather for late December.

The big story nationwide will be unseasonable warmth occupying most of the central and eastern Lower 48. The exception will be over the northern Intermountain West and northern Plains, where a chilly air mass will lap southward.

Despite the expansive toasty and tranquil weather, there will be some trouble spots, primarily in the western United States due to heavy precipitation. That’s also where, in the high elevations, we’ll see the greatest chance of a white Christmas.

The month as a whole has featured exceptional warmth and bouts of severe weather, including three other major warm pulses, two of which coincided with outbreaks of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

December tornado record crushed by historic onslaught of storms in U.S.

Where the holiday will feel more like springtime

Temperatures will spike markedly over the south-central and southeastern United States on Christmas Eve, surging 30 degrees or more above normal. Oklahoma City will peak around 80 degrees on Friday, compared with an average high of 49 degrees. This would represent the warmest December temperature observed in the Sooner State’s capital since 1966. It will enjoy sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s on Saturday, a far cry from Christmas 2012, when a half-inch coating of snow fell.

Wichita should see highs in the lower 70s on Friday, nearly 30 degrees warmer than its typical late-December high of 44, but those won’t eclipse the 83 degrees from Dec. 24, 1955.

Enter winter, the fastest-warming season

A Christmas record is virtually a certainty in Dallas , where a high of 83 is predicted. The city’s previous warmest Christmas on record occurred in 2016, when a high of 80 degrees was recorded.

While the heat will be anchored over the central Plains on Friday, it will be squashed south and east as cold air encroaches from the north and west. Chicago will see highs near 50 on Christmas Eve before slipping to the mid-40s on Christmas Day.

Across the Tennessee Valley, mainly sunny and breezy conditions are likely, with highs in the lower 70s on Friday and the mid-70s on Saturday. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Memphis could tie a century-old record that has held since 1889 on Christmas.

The warmth will crest on the East Coast on Christmas Day, with highs in the nation’s capital around 63 degrees.

Where to watch for trouble spots

While most of the central and eastern United States will be A-okay for travel, the West Coast will experience considerable travel issues. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings stretch from the Cascades to the southern Sierra Nevada, with feet of snow possible in the higher elevations.

In the mountains of Oregon and Washington state, up to two feet of snow is possible at elevations above 5,000 feet. The snow will taper down by Thursday evening, with improving conditions into the morning on Christmas Eve before a second system will bring additional valley rains and mountain snows later in the day.

California will see back-to-back-to-back systems, with heavy rain in the northern lowlands and San Joaquin Valley on Thursday and extreme snowfall rates in the mountains. That moisture will shift south and east on Christmas Eve, with snow levels dropping as low as 2,500 feet and affecting some of the mountain passes in the central Sierra Nevada.

Southern California, including Los Angeles, will see a burst of rain during the first half of Christmas Eve, with up to several inches possible.

Here's the latest forecast precipitation totals through Christmas afternoon. The period with the highest amounts has also slowed a bit to Thursday and Friday. Biggest impact will be on the roadways. Travel safe this Holiday weekend! #CAwx pic.twitter.com/PZJa84sd7B — NWS Los Angeles (@NWSLosAngeles) December 21, 2021

Another weaker system will swing-slip southeastward from Northern California into the south-central part of the state Christmas Day into Sunday.

From the two systems, 10 inches of liquid-equivalent precipitation will accumulate in the central Sierra Nevada around Yosemite National Park, with moisture forced up the mountains where it gathers in the high elevations. Temperatures up there are well below freezing, though, meaning snow will fall, with upward of 10 feet possible.

“Heavy mountain snow & gusty winds will combine for extremely difficult holiday travel,” tweeted the National Weather Service in Sacramento. “Mountain travel will be hazardous, and is highly discouraged, with whiteout conditions possible at times.”

Mountain snow is also likely Christmas Eve into Christmas Day across the Four Corners region and into the Colorado Rockies, with only light precipitation as the system translates east over the Central Plains and Corn Belt. That system may eventually be energized off the coast of New England on Christmas, with rain light north of New York City and snow or mixed precipitation across parts of New York state, the Berkshires, the White and Green mountains and most of northern New England.

Aside from areas of light snow in the West and northern Plains, most of the contiguous United States looks tranquil on Sunday.

Who could see a white Christmas

The mountains of California, Oregon and Washington. The high elevations of the broader western United States will, too. A white Christmas is defined as an inch of snow present on Christmas morning. It doesn’t have to be freshly fallen, and snow doesn’t even have to come down on Dec. 25 — it’s simply a question of what’s on the ground.

While 22 percent of the United States is technically covered by snow, much of what’s left in North Dakota, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin may disappear in temperatures close to 40 degrees on Friday. It’ll be a battle between chilly ground temperatures and mild air.

The snowpack across central and northern New England should survive, particularly with some replenishing snowfall on Christmas Day.

Overall, though, the country’s snow cover is far below where it should be — normally around 40 percent — a product of this month’s bizarre warmth, as well as longer-term climate trends. The odds of a white Christmas are declining across much of the nation. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 18 out of the nation’s largest 25 cities have seen their frequency of white Christmases drop in the past decade.

Logan County native Brennan Christmas takes the Grand Ole Opry stage for ICMA competition

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) - The 29th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards took center stage at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville last week. The event, co-hosted by Inside Edition’s Megan Alexander and American Idol contestant Zachariah Smith, was a night of performances, tributes, and awards.

Celebrating the excellence and achievement of those who inspire and uplift through Christian Country music, the awards honor artists and other industry professionals who promote positive messages through their craft.

Brennan Christmas, a young singer-songwriter from Logan County, was on that stage competing in The Sound of Small Town America competition.

“I basically came out of the womb singing,” Christmas said. “From the time I was eight months old, I would pull myself up onto whatever I could grab and stomp my foot to any music playing.”

The music he writes is rooted deeply in his faith and allows him to minister in his way.

“Music can touch people like nothing else can,” he said. “You can read a word. You can hear somebody preaching to you, but when you hear music, it touches your soul like nothing else.”

His middle school principal Bonnie Watson informed him about the competition, who suggested that he enter. However, after entering his audition video, he almost didn’t make it to the initial round of the competition due to his email not working. He was contacted by someone from the ICMA through Facebook three days before the regional competition in Mississippi.

“She said, ‘Hey, we’ve been trying to get a hold of you for like a month or so. You have a spot down here in the competition if you want it, but you haven’t responded to any of our emails,’” Christmas said.

His family quickly organized and made arrangements to get him on that stage.

“They had five little envelopes to name who was going to the Opry,” Christmas said. “When they opened up the envelope and said Brennan Christmas, I was just blown away. I didn’t expect it to have made it that far.”

On the Opry stage, he performed an original song that he wrote to honor his great-grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.

“She was my favorite person in the whole world,” Christmas said. “At first, I would cry every time I played it because I missed her, but now when I play it, I just smile and think: Man, I can’t wait to see her again and be in the presence of our creator and to have her there and to hug her and just to hear her laugh and see her smile again. It’s going to be amazing.”

Despite initial doubts entering the competition, Christmas earned third place in the youth category.

“I really didn’t think I’d make it as far as the Opry,” he said. “Of course, my family was convinced the whole time, but I was not. I tried to go in hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.”

As a part of his prize, Christmas will be recording “You’ll Remember Again” as a single, which will be released on all streaming platforms and country music radio stations within the next year. The young artist is excited about the future but remains humble and grounded in his faith.

“It was an experience beyond compare to any other singing opportunity I’ve had before,” Christmas said. “I was grateful to have sung on the stage, and placing at all was a huge honor.”

Looking ahead, he remains open to where his path will lead.

“You know, whatever God has planned, I follow through with that,” he said.

Weekend forecast best Saturday

STILL A BIT HUMID

Morning fog will burn off by 8 AM in most of Massachusetts, perhaps a tad later on the Cape and Islands. It will be partly sunny. Plan on highs in the 70s at the coast and 80s inland. Spot showers will pop up this afternoon and evening. Although you’ll want to keep an eye on radar, we’re not expecting vast coverage. Most towns will stay dry with brief showers where they do pop up.

Dew points in the lower 60s today will still feel sticky and moderately humid. Dew points will drop back into the 50s this weekend for a more comfortable feel.

SATURDAY PICK

Highs over the weekend will be seasonable in the 70s. Saturday will be nice with morning sun and scattered afternoon clouds. Although a few showers will develop in central and northern New England, southern New England will likely stay dry.

Sunday has a better chance for a period of rain a shortwave piece of energy moves through. It won’t rain all day. Right now we’re favoring late morning through early afternoon for that rainfall. Be sure to check back on the weekend forecast as we fine tune the timing.

Floods Break Dams and Submerge Highways in Southern Germany

Several towns declared states of emergency and evacuated citizens as water submerged streets and highways and derailed a high-speed train.

By Christopher F. Schuetze

Reporting from Berlin

After a weekend of heavy rains, severe floods in regions of southern Germany led several towns to declare states of emergency and to evacuate their citizens from heavily affected areas. Water submerged streets and highways, broke dams and derailed a high-speed train. Even as rain let up on Monday, emergency crews rushed to fortify dams along rivers in anticipation of further flooding.

On Monday morning, a 43-year-old woman was found dead in her basement in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district in Bavaria, according to the local authorities. She had been missing since Saturday night.

Several hours later, responders who were pumping water out of a basement in Schorndorf in Baden-Württemberg found the bodies of a man and a woman, according to the police. On Saturday, a firefighter died trying to save people, according to the district he served; another firefighter has been missing since Saturday.

Tens of thousands of emergency workers, both local and from other regions, are responding to the disaster, which affected Germany’s two southern states, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The responders, who include 800 soldiers, have rescued people stranded in their houses and cars, built emergency dams and set up crisis accommodations.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaking to people wearing emergency medical uniforms.

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, visited the small market town of Reichertshofen, roughly 35 miles north of Munich, on Monday and said that the flooding represented a new reality as the effects of climate change are being felt in Central Europe.

“What is also important to me is that we are very clear that this is not just an event that has been happening for centuries,” he told reporters, noting that he had visited four active flooding sites this year alone.

“We must not neglect the task of halting man-made climate change,” he told reporters on Monday. “This, too, is a lesson that we must learn from this event and this disaster.”

Between Friday at noon and Monday at noon, 120 to 160 liters of rain, or about 30 to 40 gallons, fell per square meter (about 11 square feet), which is more than usually falls in a month, according to Sebastian Altnau, a meteorologist with the German Weather Office.

The firefighter who became the first victim of the floods had set out with three colleagues on a boat late on Saturday to save a family stranded inside a building. Before they reached the house, the boat flipped. While three of the firefighters were able to save themselves, the body of the fourth was found early Sunday, a spokeswoman for the district confirmed.

In the small southwestern town of Ebersbach in Baden-Württemberg, the water pushed through a highway wall on Sunday night. A video published on the city’s Facebook feed shows how the water turned the road into an impassable river in seconds.

About 15 miles to the northeast, near Schwäbisch Gmünd, a sudden mudslide pushed a high-speed train off the rails and buried a car on Saturday night, according to the national rail service. Rescue workers were able to evacuate the train of its 185 passengers, and no one was hurt. After signaling with a flashlight, the driver, too, was picked up by rescue workers, he told the German newspaper Bild .

In both Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg over the weekend, several dams broke, in some cases leading to flooding of entire neighborhoods. On Saturday in Reichertshofen, where the chancellor visited Monday, two dams broke despite being fortified with sandbags, allowing the Baar River to flood neighborhoods. Around 5,000 emergency workers helped with rescue and evacuation operations.

Responders spent much of Monday safeguarding against flooding from bigger rivers, which have swelled since the downpour. In the medieval city of Regensburg in Bavaria, in the southeast, emergency workers built a dam on Monday along the Danube River as it continued to rise. On Monday afternoon, the Danube’s level measured at over six meters, or nearly 20 feet — twice as high as it was on Friday morning.

The flooding has brought up memories of the disastrous Ahr Valley floods in 2021, which killed 189 people. The heavy rains, which scientists said were driven by climate change , led the Ahr River to rise sharply, sweeping up buildings, bridges and roads. At the time, the authorities were criticized for not warning the local populations properly.

Nancy Faeser, who, as Germany’s interior minister, is responsible for disaster response, traveled with Mr. Scholz on Monday. She told local reporters that she could see “lessons had been learned” in the Ahr catastrophe. “Coordination and organization work much better,” she said.

The prime minister has said it is important that the furore over him leaving D-Day commemorations early yesterday is not "politicised".

"On reflection, that was a mistake and I apologise," Rishi Sunak said.

"I think it's important, though, given the enormity of the sacrifice made, that we don't politicise this. The focus should rightly be on the veterans who gave so much."

Mr Sunak also denied reports that his team considered cancelling his attendance at the entire event yesterday, saying "that's simply not right".

He added that the itinerary for his attendance at D-Day events was "set weeks ago, before the general election campaign".

Mr Sunak has faced criticism for leaving the events in Normandy early, later carrying out a TV interview.

Veterans minister Johnny Mercer has said he understands people's "outrage" over Mr Sunak's actions, describing them as a "significant mistake".

But, in a later post on social media, Mr Mercer said this moment is "not reflective of his work on veterans", adding that "no one has done more to facilitate" his work supporting veterans than this prime minister.

Addressing the criticism, Mr Sunak said people can "judge me by my actions" when it comes to supporting the Armed Forces.

A Number 10 spokesperson has also said: "The prime minister was always scheduled to attend D-Day commemorations, including the UK National Commemoration event in Normandy, and it is incorrect to suggest otherwise."

While Rishi Sunak has insisted his decision to leave D-Day commemorations early shouldn't be "politicised", Labour's Jonathan Ashworth says the prime minister's move was politically motivated.

"This disrespect is shocking, but I think it reveals something unbecoming about both his judgement and his character," said the shadow paymaster general.

"What type of person thinks it is more important to rush away from an event like this to go and do an interview to try and score political points and save his own skin than truly honour the fallen."

He continued: "It was him who put political party ahead of country."

Mr Ashworth accused the PM of "scrambling out an apology" today.

"The right thing to do was to stay at that event."

As the Tory battle bus pulled into a school in the Gloucestershire town of Stonehouse, the reporters and camera crews onboard immediately scuttled off up the road in the opposite direction of the campaign stop.

Their interest had been piqued not by the presence of a politician, but by a road sign.

After a tense interview in the playground of a Swindon nursery in which Rishi Sunak had been forced to apologise for leaving D-Day commemoration events early - something criticised as offensive by politicians and military folk alike - his next campaign stop was on a street called "Veterans Way".

Election campaigns often progress in peaks and troughs with errors and lapses of judgement giving rise to other awkward situations which - without the background controversy - would have at one point been totally irrelevant and innocuous.

They can also throw up strange sights - like that of three national broadcast camera crews filming a sign in the middle of the Gloucestershire countryside while an exasperated Tory official glumly looks on.

You know what they say, prime minister - it never rains.

Labour is promising to get more young people on the housing ladder as it announces its "freedom to buy" scheme.

The party is pledging to make the existing mortgage guarantee scheme - which sees the government act as a guarantor for people unable to save big deposits - into a permanent fixture if it wins the election on 4 July.

Sir Keir Starmer is also committing to an overhaul of the planning system, including reintroducing housing targets, claiming his measures will see 1.5 million more homes built over the next five years.

"After 14 years of Conservative government, the dream of home ownership is out of reach for too many hard-working people," he said.

"Despite doing everything right, they can't move on and up. A generation faces becoming renters for life.

"My parents' home gave them security and was a foundation for our family. As prime minister, I will turn the dream of owning a home into a reality."

Until voters go to the polls on 4 July, the Politics Hub will be looking back at some memorable moments from previous general election campaigns.

Nigel Farage has claimed that the furore over Rishi Sunak leaving D-Day commemorations early yesterday was the prime minister's "Gillian Duffy moment" ( see post at 2pm ).

So what better time than to look back at this classic piece of campaign heritage?

Politics loves a "gate" and none were as impactful on the 2010 campaign as one that may have marked the beginning of the end for Gordon Brown.

"Bigotgate" was born after the then prime minister described a voter airing concerns about immigration in Rochdale as a "bigoted woman".

Mr Brown muttered it after an exchange with her on camera, not realising he was still being picked up by a microphone, and the comment was subsequently broadcast.

Over in Essex, the drama has been ramping up regarding the selection of Tory party chairman Richard Holden as the candidate for Basildon and Billericay.

You may remember there was fury from the local Conservative association after the party's HQ presented them with a shortlist of just one candidate - if you don't, let our chief political correspondent Jon Craig fill you in .

And now today - on the day all parties' candidates need to be finalised by the 4pm deadline - reports have suggested there have been enough complaints to call an emergency meeting about ousting Mr Holden.

We have spoken to some people in the know about the association upset, and while they confirmed there had been a sufficient number of complaints, they told us there was not enough time to hold a meeting, let alone to deselect Mr Holden and reselect a new candidate.

But while they may have accepted their lot with the party chairman, there is still much anger with Tory HQ...

The full list of candidates standing in Basildon and Billericay is below:

  • Christopher Bateman - British Democratic Party
  • Stephen Conlay - Reform UK
  • Stewart Goshawk - Green Party
  • Alex Harrison - Labour Party
  • Richard Holden - Conservative and Unionist Party
  • Edward Sainsbury - Liberal Democrats

The Lib Dems have hit photoshop today, altering a photo from the D-Day commemorations in Normandy yesterday to take aim at the prime minister.

Rishi Sunak is under fire after leaving the anniversary events early, later going on to give a TV interview.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps and Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron took his place, joining world leaders including US President Joe Biden for the remainder of the events.

And it's a picture of former prime minister Lord Cameron standing alongside leaders like Germany's Olaf Scholz, Mr Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron which has been doctored by the Lib Dems.

Mr Cameron has been removed and replaced with an empty space representing the prime minister.

It's captioned "dereliction of duty" - a criticism levelled at the prime minister a number of times today.

Mr Sunak has apologised for leaving early, describing it as a "mistake".

Nigel Farage has described the furore over the prime minister leaving D-Day commemorations early yesterday as his "Gillian Duffy moment".

He was referring to an infamous election campaign fiasco in which then prime minister Gordon Brown shared his less-than-flattering view of lifelong Labour voter Gillian Duffy.

In perhaps the best-known hot-mic moment in British politics, Mr Brown called Ms Duffy a "bigoted woman".

It was a bombshell moment for a prime minister already having a tough 2010 general election campaign.

Now, Reform UK's new leader Mr Farage has said Rishi Sunak has had his own such moment.

"This is the Gillian Duffy moment .... it was a catastrophe for Gordon Brown," he told ITV.

"The one thing people have always associated the Conservative Party with is being basically patriotic.

"It's led by a man who very clearly isn't."

Both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer will take part in a special leaders' event programme next week, Sky News has confirmed.

The Battle For Number 10, a UK Election Leaders Special Event, will be aired on Wednesday 12 June.

The event will be live from Grimsby in front of an audience.

The new Grimsby and Cleethorpes constituency is complex and  likely to be a key battleground in the election.

If you would like to be part of this studio audience, and be given the opportunity to ask a question to one of the party leaders, please complete the short questionnaire in  this link .

Sky News will put the main candidates vying to lead the country under scrutiny in front of a representative audience drawn from the local area and nationally.

The two men will look to pitch to voters in an in-depth interview before answering questions from the audience.

It's been a busy start to the day today as politicians hit the campaign trail once again after a pause for D-Day commemorations.

And it is D-Day which is dominating the conversation today, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak under fire for leaving anniversary events in Normandy early yesterday.

Here is what you may have missed:

  • The prime minister has apologised for leaving the commemorations, describing it as a "mistake";
  • However, he denied reports his team considered cancelling his attendance entirely, saying "that's simply not right";
  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said Mr Sunak "will have to answer for his actions";
  • Speaking of his own attendance at the events, he said "there was nowhere else I was going to be";
  • Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey accused Mr Sunak of abandoning veterans "on the beaches";
  • Scotland's First Minister John Swinney called the PM's D-Day decision "breathtakingly terrible";
  • Reform UK leader Nigel Farage accused Mr Sunak of not being a "patriotic leader of the Conservative Party";
  • Veterans minister Johnny Mercer admitted it was a "significant mistake", but said it was not "reflective" of the PM's record on veterans.

Sky News is also looking for people to be in the audience for its leaders' programme with Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer .

The Battle For Number 10 will air from 7pm next Wednesday.

Labour veteran Harriet Harman has told Sky News she wants to be made a peer, after spending more than 40 years in the House of Commons.

Ms Harman announced she would be standing down at the current election.

Speaking to the  Electoral Dysfunction podcast  with Beth Rigby and Ruth Davidson, they were joking about Ms Harman going into the upper chamber.

"I hope so," she replied.

Ms Davidson - who is herself in the Lords - said that Ms Harman would be "such an addition" to the upper chamber.

But Ms Harman said it's important "not to count our chickens before they hatch".

She would not be drawn on what title she would take - pointing out there was already a Lord of Peckham (where her parliamentary seat was).

And it was also akin to "measuring up the curtains for Downing Street when they haven't won the election".

"I've got to be, like, coyly, modestly waiting for that moment if it comes - the dissolution honours, as it's called," she said.
