Lavender Travel Candle Tins: Beautifully Practical and Perfect for Gifting

You’ll never leave home without a travel candle after you’ve tried one of these DIY lavender travel candle tins!

Lavender is one of my favorite scents in the world; calming, floral, and soft, with herbal undertones. When I lived in the Midwest, I would count the days during the winter until I could begin working in my herb garden—flipping through seed catalogs and daydreaming of what I would plant to use in my DIYs . Nowadays, living in Texas, I can walk by my lavender plants, brushing my fingers through the tall stalks just to smell the unique scent of lavender. Breathing in its stillness and reprieve.

Because dried lavender doesn’t travel well, I found a way to take that feeling and scent with me in a hand-poured lavender travel candle. Lighting one makes you feel as if you are in the garden (no green thumb required).

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience; read the full disclosure policy .

Bring the fresh, light scent of lavender on your travels with these DIY travel candle tins!

What’s a Travel Candle?

Its true travel can be stressful even when you’re with family or friends. Lighting a travel candle is a popular way to calm down and replenish upon arriving at your destination. Made in 2 to 4 ounce sizes in travel-friendly candle tins .

Make any Airbnb, hotel, flat, or odd spare bedroom feel more at home. It’s good to be prepared with a travel candle because how can we truly anticipate what a place we haven’t been to will smell like?

I don’t know about you, but I like to make myself as at home as I can be when I travel. I unpack every single thing the minute I arrive (this drives my husband a bit crazy) but prepping the vanity for getting ready, having my sleep mask and headphones in the nightstand drawer, and placing a travel candle beside the bed is a must.

And the last one is key when you think of a travel candle as your very own pocket-sized coziness. Why not scatter a few different scents around your vacation rental and bask in the warm glow of candlelight?

Bring the fresh, light scent of lavender on your travels with this creative lavender use!

What are the best travel tins for candle making?

If you’re going to travel with a candle, it has got to be unbreakable! So what are the best travel tins for candle making? Containers that are small and lightweight are ideal. Choosing a candle tin with a lid protects the wick and makes it easy to pack. Plus, the lid can be used to extinguish the flame if you forget your candle snuffler . And metal candle tins are #1 on my list of safe candle containers !

But, safe and practical doesn’t have to equate to boring. Choose from sleek matte black to warm rose gold or Anthropology-inspired candle tins, and more. Scroll through these travel tins for candle-making specially designed for hitting the road!

Did you know you can reuse travel candle tins?

Yep, don’t toss them after your trip! After a candle has burned down to ½ inch of wax remaining, don’t light it again (Burning a candle down any lower, you can risk starting a fire); instead, give it a second life. Use it as a secure spot to pack small trinkets from your trip, foreign coins, or chocolates.

Find my tips on how to clean a candle container for new use, along with a handful of ideas for reusing candle containers such as storing sugar scrubs and homemade dishwasher detergent , here .

How do you make a travel candle?

Travel candles are a treat! Made with eco-friendly clean-burning soy wax , wood wicks , and essential oil – you can’t go wrong! Bring the fresh fragrance of an herb garden to life in these hand-poured travel tin candles. Pull out the lavender buds you’ve been saving, or dry your own with quick tips here .

Did I mention these travel candles make a wonderful gift? Personalize one with the best candle scent for you. Take our quiz to find out what yours is!

Travel Candle Supplies:

4 metal candle tins , 2 ounce

  • ½ pound soy wax flakes
  • 8 small wood wick and clips
  • 4 glue dots
  • 15 ml lavender essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried lavender buds

How to Make Travel Candles:

  • Double layer wood wicks into each wood wick clip . Then use glue dots to adhere the prepped wicks to the center base of each candle tin .
  • Use a digital kitchen scale to measure 8 ounces of soy wax . Pour it into a candle melting pitcher.  Fill a large saucepan with about 2 inches of water and place it on the stove to heat using the double boiler method.
  • Melt over medium to low heat with a gentle simmer at most, stirring often. (Never leave melting wax unattended.)

Remove from heat after melting and let the wax cool to 120°F to 125°F before adding 15 ml of lavender essential oil . Slowly stir the essential oil into the wax for a consistent 1 to 2 minutes.

  • Then carefully pour the scented soy wax into prepared candle tins. Sprinkle dried lavender buds on the top of each candle. (I love the look of lavender buds in these candles, but you can skip them, and your candle will still smell great.)

Last let the candles cool 30 minutes to 1 hour or until the wax is hard and white. Then cut each wood wick to approximately ⅛ an inch above the wax for the best burn rate.

You’ll never leave home without a travel candle after you’ve tried one!

You’ll never leave home without a travel candle after you’ve tried one!

To make the most of a candle when traveling, light it when you first arrive to alleviate any unwanted odors and disperse the fragrant, calming scent of lavender into the space.

To avoid setting a fire alarm off, make sure to trim the wick to ⅛ inch each time before lighting. This prevents a big flame, smoke, and soot from building up in a candle. And always remember safety first – never leave a candle burning unattended!

5 Tips on How Turn a Hotel Room into a Sanctuary

5 Tips on How Turn a Hotel Room into a Sanctuary

1. Clean If You Must

If you have trouble relaxing in a hotel room without know if it’s completely clean, try this. Bring a pack of natural cleaning wipes to disinfect the top of the vanity, nightstand, or remote control. These are even made with lavender essential oil!

2. Light a Travel Candle

You can create a relaxing sanctuary in any hotel room or even your in-law’s spare room by simply lighting a travel candle for all the cozy feels.

3. Play Some Tunes

Wind down or get your vacation party started with your favorite tunes. Your music is always travel-friendly when you use a service like Amazon Music Unlimited or Spotify .

4. Don’t Forget the Little Luxuries

If you paid for a room with a jetted jacuzzi tub or an antique claw foot tub, put it to use!! Add your own homemade bubble bath or bath bombs to a jacuzzi (neither of these will clog the jets). As for a deep soaking bathtub, go all-in with a milk bath recipe and moon bath ritual beginning with milk and ending with ahh…

5. Get Some R&R

Traveling itself and adjusting to a new sleep space can be hard on anyone. So bring along a DIY sleep spray to get some much-needed rest and relaxation. Spritz it on your hotel linens and pillowcase. You can even dab a drop of lavender essential oil behind each ear. Just make sure you put out your travel candle first.

Hi, this is a lovely article. Do you not find your lavender discolours with the soap or the essential oils in the soap? Its a real pain for me!

Thanks Wendy, lavender does discolor in soap fairy quickly, but not in candles.

The Best Hand Sanitizers to Stick Into Your Backpack, Purse, and Carry-On

By Mara Balagtas and Madison Flager

21 Best Hand Sanitizers for Travel

In the last year and a half, as the pandemic made us all far more aware of how often we should be washing our hands, hand sanitizer has become a staple in every backpack, carry-on, and purse. Thankfully, after months of out-of-stock notifications, the options are plentiful: retailers largely caught up with demand and most have removed limits on how many can be purchased at once.

Below, we've rounded up 21 of the best hand sanitizers you can buy online right now, all of which adhere to the CDC's guidelines to use an alcohol-based hand rub with more than 60 percent ethanol or 70 percent isopropanol, in order to effectively kill germs and bacteria. We've included a range of sizes and scents, including sprays, gels, and kid-friendly options, that will work for different occasions: some you'll want to stash in your glove compartment, others you can clip onto your go-to plane backpack. And since frequent sanitizing can be harsh on our skin, many of these picks include ingredients meant to keep hands moisturized , like aloe vera and witch hazel.

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Aesop Geranium Leaf Rinse-Free Hand Wash

Aesop makes the kind of soap you're excited to see in a hotel or a friend's bathroom, so it's no surprise its hand sanitizer is just as beloved. This gel, available in travel- and full-size bottles, is a favorite of several Traveler editors, and is made with a fresh, citrusy blend of geranium leaf, mandarin rind, and bergamot rind.

Noshinku refillable mini hand sanitizer

Made with 70 percent alcohol and jojoba, argan, rosehip, and coconut oils to help hydrate and protect your skin, Noshinku's hand sanitizer is the kind of luxurious formula we're looking for these days. Plus, Noshinku sells 17-ounce refill pouches , so you can keep using one small bottle. For more scent options, try Nordstrom's exclusive three-pack, which comes with refillable eucalyptus, bergamot, and lavendula sprays.

lavender travel pack

Jao Refresher

Thankfully, we're past the days of hand sanitizers that smell like straight liquor as our only option. This Jao spray couldn't be further from that sharp scent, with a mix of lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, geranium, and sage essential oils. Jao founder Gale Mayron says it's multipurpose too—she uses it on zits and as a deodorant in a pinch, too.

lavender travel pack

Touchland Power Mist

As evidenced by this list alone, hand sanitizers come in many shapes and sizes. This one is among the sleekest in the bunch, meaning you can sneak the thin rectangular spray into small purses or fanny packs with ease. Plus, it comes in more than a dozen scents, including citrus grove, frosted mint, and velvet peach.

Aesop Adventurer Roll Up

As mentioned, Aesop's hand sanitizer smells and feels absolutely lovely. To make an entire routine out of your hand care, opt for this Aesop Adventurer Roll Up kit, which comes with the brand's gel hand sanitizer, a spray hand sanitizer, and a generous-sized hand cream to soothe dried out skin. All three come rolled up in a fabric toiletry bag you can reuse to store makeup or lotions in on future trips.

EO French lavender hand sanitizer spray

Lavender is said to be a relaxing, soothing scent, which is why it's often used in nighttime pillow sprays. We appreciate it just as much in our hand sanitizer. Order EO's French lavender hand sanitizer spray in an eight-ounce size to stash in your car, or stock up on a six-pack of smaller two-ounce bottles to bring in your carry-on (and share with less-prepared travel companions).

Medifense Clean hand serum

Senior social media manager Mercedes Bleth is a fan of this compact sanitizer from Mediheal. She says the serum feels extra moisturizing, more like a lotion, when you put it on (it is made with olive oil, which helps!). Plus, it comes with a reusable pouch that can be hooked onto a backpack or purse for quick access on the go.

Everyday Humans Germaphobe hand sanitizer

Everyday Humans makes some of our favorite sunscreen , and the brand's hand sanitizer doesn't disappoint either. Safe to use on your hands, surfaces, or face mask (though be sure to let the mask dry before rewearing it), it's small enough to tuck into any bag and will last a while, as a few spritzes go a long way. The crisp pine scent is currently sold out, but black tea is still available; both are made with aloe vera and vitamin E to keep hands moisturized.

Eir NYC Pure Eir hand sanitizer

Made with essential oils and available in natural-smelling scents like boreal, citron, and florica, Eir's spray hand sanitizer is a far cry from some more pungent alternatives (no vague liquor scent here, either), but still contains 65.7% alcohol. Traveler editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of boreal for its fresh, pine-y scent. We also like Eir's commitment to sustainability: its packaging is entirely recyclable whenever possible.

Lemon mist.

Everyone for Everybody hand sanitizer spray

Arguably the best-smelling spray on this list: Everyone for Everybody's coconut lemon hand sanitizer (the brand also makes French lavender, ruby grapefruit, and peppermint citrus scents). Each box comes with six sprays, so you'll be set for months with just one.

Megababe Squeaky Clean hand sanitizer

Early in the pandemic, Megababe—known for its deodorant and anti-chafe sticks —started selling hand sanitizer, which promptly sold out. Now, though, it's back in stock and another crowd favorite. Made with 62% ethyl alcohol and essential oils like sweet almond, marula, and geranium oil, it comes in a pocket-size two-ounce container as well as a home- and office-friendly 16-ounce pump container .

Image may contain Cosmetics Bottle and Sunscreen

Prim Botanicals Shiny Happy Hands hand sanitizer

This eight-ounce bottle is not TSA-friendly, but it will last you awhile, which is more of a priority these days anyway. It's also unscented, and made with 70% alcohol and aloe vera leaf extract to keep hands from completely drying out.

Image may contain Bottle Shaker Aluminium Tin Can and Spray Can

100% Pure hand sanitizer spray

Made with only ingredients you recognize (and can pronounce)—ethyl alcohol, aloe vera, glycerin, and tea tree leaf oil—this spray lives up to the brand's  name. With 62% alcohol, it comes in a 1.7-ounce spray bottle and has a neutral, clean scent.

Image may contain Bottle Shaker and Shampoo

Pipette Baby hand sanitizer

Strong enough for adults but gentle enough for little hands , this hand sanitizer is made with 65% alcohol, squalane (derived from sugarcane and used to lock in moisture), and glycerin. Each eight-ounce bottle lasts for around 80 uses.

Image may contain Cosmetics Aluminium Bottle Shaker Tin and Can

Orly hand sanitizer spray

You probably know Orly for its nail polish, but during the pandemic, they've pivoted to hand sanitizer, using their Los Angeles-based factory to produce this 75%-alcohol spray. (The first batch of 10,000 units were donated to the City of Los Angeles to distribute to the city’s homeless population.) Each order comes with four two-ounce bottles.

These genius packing solutions will make you feel like a true travel expert.

BuzzFeed Staff

1. A wheeled carry-on bag  if you'd rather die than pay for a checked bag. This one is small enough to fit under the seat, so it can even qualify as your personal item on extra strict airlines that shall not be named ( you know the ones ).

reviewer's pic of suitcase open so you can see a large mesh pocket and large compartment

Now you won't even have to pull your suitcase outta the overhead!

Promising review : "If you are a consultant and struggle carrying big carry-ons. This is a perfect one for you. I love this purchase!!! Lightweight. Enough space for 1–3 days of travel. Thank you!" — SS

Get it from Amazon for $105.87 (also available in two other colors ).

2. Or a durable  travel backpack  that is, quite possibly, *the* perfect personal item thanks to its waterproof design, anti-theft pocket, USB charging port, and a dedicated shoe compartment. There's room for everything!

reviewer photo of three people walking through the airport all wearing the travel backpack

This is super roomy, zips completely open (like a suitcase — so it's easy to find what you need), has plenty of pockets (including one for shoes and a separate wet bag!), and a strap that slides down over your luggage handle for easy transport.

Promising reviews: " I bought this backpack for work. It's the BEST backpack I've ever used. I needed one with several pockets and not too big or heavy. I found that with this backpack,  I can fill it and still have room! There's even a shoe and clothing compartment for traveling! The straps are just wide enough to stay on your shoulders, especially with the snap straps in front. I also love the color, and it's true to the picture color. If you're looking for lightweight with tons of pockets, this is what you need!" — Kelly Miller

"This is a perfect size backpack for traveling on a plane as your personal item, especially to international destinations. You could fit rolled-up clothes in here for another week , and it has a very handy shoe bag and tons of places for your electronics. This will be an excellent addition to my carry-on suitcase. Best purchase all year. I consider myself an expert on travel bags. I have way too many. It’s smaller than it looks but so roomy." — AP

Get it from Amazon for  $36.99  (available in three sizes and 26 colors/styles).

3. A  digital luggage scale  to help you pack the essentials without incurring any overweight bag fees. You won't be filled with dread when you head to the airport because you already know your bag is under the weight limit!

hand held luggage scale

Promising review: "Buy this if you travel a lot. I travel with scuba dive gear and this saved me from going over the weight limit both going to the island and returning. I was a hero with my friends. They had no idea how much their bags weighed. I helped them too from going over their weight limit. It's easy to use and worth the money." — Tinadiver

Get it from Amazon for $11.98  (available in six colors).

4. A travel wallet  for a sensible *and* stylish way to carry important documents so they don't take up space in your carry-on bag. Passport? Check. Boarding pass? Check. Credit cards? Check.

reviewer's orange travel wallet holding passport and other items

This RFID-blocking wallet has a passport pocket, boarding pass compartment, three credit card slots, an ID slot, a slim card pouch, a slim pocket, a ticket slot, a cellphone pouch, a zippered coin pocket, a key holder, and a pen holder.

Promising review: "This wallet is durable, chic, and spacious. The lining is very soft and feels expensive. From the design to the material to the zippers and snaps, it's well made. I ordered it in rose gold, and it's a beautiful color. I travel frequently and love the boarding pass pocket. I recommended it to my sister and mom, who also love theirs! They ordered in yellow and bronze and were also happy with the color." — Brianna graham

Get it from Amazon for $12.99+ (available in 31 colors).

5. A  set of packing cubes  you'll soon wonder how you ever traveled without. Your clothes will stay nicely folded (or rolled!) and you'll have more room in your suitcase. Expert packing level 🔓unlocked.

reviewer's clothes neatly organized in green packing cubes

Promising review: "I travel frequently and travel light. My luggage is usually limited to a backpack that slides under the airline seat. For a two-week European cruise, I added a carry-on rolling suitcase. I've used these packing cubes twice so far, and I am hooked. One cube holds everything (including clothing) I take on a three-night trip . The cube slides into my pack, saving massive amounts of room, and everything is easy to find during travel and at the hotel. Taking out one cube and unzipping is much better than digging through a pack! I will never leave home without these!" — Gura

Get a set of four from Amazon for $21.99 (available in 12 colors and as a set of eight).

6. Or some  vacuum storage bags  when you're a serial over-packer...or if you simply need to maximize luggage space. Place your items in the bag and suck out the air with the included travel pump. Who says you can't bring multiple outfit options on vacation?

A BuzzFeeder's bulky clothes in a sealed bag with text:

Former BuzzFeed Shopping writer  Jasmin Sandal says: "I swear by these bad boys not only for general storage purposes, but also if I know I'm going to be traveling for an extended period of time. As someone who tends to pack for every eventuality (who doesn't like to be prepared?!) I have learned that it's better to travel with them than without — especially since it's more or less a guarantee that my clothes are gonna take up a ~substantial~ amount of room in my suitcase. And if I can use something that's gonna shrink the size of my bulky hoodies and/or big tees in order for me to create more space, I'm sure as heck gonna do it. Plus, the satisfaction is indeed guaranteed because when you see those chunky layers flatten into a pancake...it's just *chef's kiss* ."

Promising review: "These are the best packing bags. We used them traveling across the country and... to save space in the suitcase! It's really easy to have the pump right inside the suitcase to flatten the bags when traveling for pleasure. I definitely recommend this for home or travel." — kit

7. A Kindle  for bookworms who keep up with their reading habit while on vacation. While packing a giant stack of *actual* books isn't exactly realistic, this compact and lightweight Kindle is a great alternative.

model outside using Kindle to read a book

It has a 300-ppi high-resolution display, an adjustable front light, and dark mode. The battery can last up to six weeks on a single charge and it offers 16 GB for storing thousands of books.

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Maitland Quitmeyer says: " I never thought I'd be an e-reader person, but living in a New York apartment with limited bookshelves changed my ways. I love love (love love love) my Kindle — especially for easily borrowing library books, squeezing in a few chapters on a subway ride, and of course traveling. I lit'rally read 10 times as much with a Kindle in my life."

Promising review: "I was so skeptical about switching from actual books to the Kindle but I have loved it!!! It’s so much more convenient to read and travels well. I’ve only had it like two weeks and have only charged it once (have read three books)!! Its battery life is amazing." — Haley

8. A slim and packable  Trtl neck pillow  that'll take up way less space than the round ones. You don't have to sacrifice your comfort just so there's one less annoying item to pack. Goodbye, sore necks and bulky pillows!

model wearing a gray trtl pillow while sleeping on a plane

The Trtl pillow is adjustable — you wrap the pillow around your neck and secure it with Velcro, and if you find it's too loose, just make it a bit tighter! I've truly never slept better on a plane than with this pillow.

Promising review : "WOW! Literally life changing; used it on my 11-hr flight to and from Norway to SF and I usually can never sleep on planes, but this did the trick! It’s also super packable and doesn’t take up too much space! " — Julie Cox

Get it from Amazon for  $60.99+ (available in five colors).

9. A  carry-on garment duffle bag  for keeping your fancy clothes free of wrinkles while saving room in your luggage for other stuff. If you're attending a formal event and can't bear the thought of ironing or steaming, this'll do the trick.

reviewer's black garment duffle bag hanging on a door handle

It's made of vegan leather and includes a 15" padded laptop sleeve, two additional pockets, an external zipped pocket, and a separate shoe compartment!

Promising review: "This garment bag is an exceptional value for the money. Well built, top quality materials, including 'beefy' zippers, should hold up well for airline travel. Minimal wrinkles if any in garments, and a cavernous bag for storing shoes and other items for a trip. Added bonus, it fits easily in the plane overhead storage , similar in size to a standard roller bag. I highly recommend this product." — Kindle Customer

Get it from Amazon for $57.45 (available in two colors).

10. An amazingly compact  travel stroller  if one of your major anxieties when packing revolves around your essential parenting items. This stroller is so dang portable *and* it can count as a carry-on item.

Reviewer's photo showing the folded stroller fitting the carryon size requirement for Southwest Airlines

The stroller is supposed to accommodate kids from 6 months up to 55 pounds (approx. 4 years old).

Promising review: "This stroller is great! So cool looking, too. I constantly have moms coming up to me asking where I got this! So easy to fold, so light, and barely takes any space in my trunk. We took it on a flight, and the flight attendants recognized the stroller and told me that I can just wheel the baby on and put the stroller in the overhead bin. I wish I had gotten this stroller with my oldest, but I was being cheap. This stroller is so worth the money. I regret not getting it sooner! But at least my youngest can enjoy it." — Nai Len

Get it from Amazon for $139.99+ (available in eight styles and four colors).

11. A set of TSA-approved  silicone travel bottles  so your toiletries are ready for flight in no time. This set also includes spray bottles and jars for storing other products, like lotions and perfumes.

reviewer's labeled bottles and jars placed in front of the zipper bag

These BPA-free bottles feature a leakproof design so you won't have to worry about messy spills. Each silicone bottle also has the capacity printed on it for TSA purposes! You get four bottles, four jars, and two spray bottles. It also comes with two scoopers to use with the jars, a funnel for transferring liquids, a clear travel bag, a set of labels, and a cleaning brush.

Promising review : " This little set is perfect for your travel toiletries. Instead of paying $3 for those little travel bottles, you can fill your favorite products in these. The taller tubes are silicone and easy to fill. For the circular containers, I used the little scooper to fill them. I didn't use the spray bottles this trip, but I did use everything else, and I'm happy to say nothing leaked. Easy to clean after use as well. " — Nicole

Get it from Amazon for $9.48+  (available in four colors).

12. Or a  waterproof toiletry bag  designed to hold tons of stuff — it has four compartments so you can pack all your travel-size items. There's also a handy hanging hook so you won't lose track of it!

the pink toiletry bag opened showing all compartments filled with items

Promising review: "I. Love. This. Bag. Seriously, I had a cheap toiletry bag from Target that essentially did the same thing, only way worse. It was too small; the hook didn't rotate so you could only hang it at an angle, if anything ever leaked; it would seep right through the bag, etc. But THIS bag has NONE of those issues! It fits everything I need and then some, meaning I don't have to skimp on my 10-step Korean skincare routine when I travel anymore. It never leaks. And I love that the hook swivels so you can hang it anywhere, and your stuff hangs perfectly. I also love the handle and the overall flatter shape. It makes it so easy to travel with! Cannot recommend this bag enough." — KaiEli

Get it from Amazon for $18.39+ (available in two sizes and 11 colors).

13. A  collapsible coffee cup  so you can get your fix without bringing your huge reusable cup from home. This is much easier to pack in your bag!

reviewer showing the pink collapsible coffee cup full expanded

If you buy to-go coffee – whether you're jet-setting or just grabbing a mid-day pick-me-up — this cup is a must-have . So long as you remember to bring it, it's all the convenience of to-go coffee with none of the waste. It's leakproof and, when you're all done, it collapses down teeny tiny and can be tossed back in your bag. Oh! And it comes with a straw, so all you iced coffee lovers can get in on the action, too."

Get it from Amazon for $19.95+ (available in four sizes and in 24 colors).

atomizer pumping on a perfume bottle

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Elizabeth Lily says: "^ That's me pumping my signature perfume into one of these travel atomizers I've been using for about a year. As the reviewer down below mentions, it's great to just throw in your purse on the reg for a fragrance re-up throughout the day. As you can see, it's about the size of my thumb and therefore takes up very little room. Plus! It's smaller than most rollerball travel fragrances you can pick up. This first one is working so well, that I just have the other three in storage. But if this one bites the dust this summer during travels, I'll be OK about digging into my stores to use one of the remaining three...especially at this price point."

Promising review:  "I bought these due to traveling a lot for work and needing to cut down on the size of things in my carry-on bag for flying. I can bring four different perfumes now instead of one big one. They’re super easy to fill and haven’t leaked so far, but I keep them in a sandwich baggie while traveling just in case. I would 100% buy them again." — Emily

I gotta say, I love the concept of the Pen Pal from Alleyoop ! After using all of the functions (eyeliner, highlighter, lip liner, eyebrow pencil) and as someone who LOVES makeup but was applying as little as humanly possible during lockdown, I think it’s a great tool for anyone looking to streamline their routine. It's ideal to use for touch-ups come the end of the work day, or a subtle, minimalist way to apply makeup in the a.m. The brow pencil is particularly soft and pigmented, and filled in my eyebrows quickly. About to order another set for my mother as we are taking her to London, Scotland, and Ireland for the holidays. We rarely use the middle size. The small size we carry on, and the largest size we check. Very pleased with maneuvering and durability of wheels on various rough surfaces. Promising review: "We bought this to take with us when we visited our daughter who is studying abroad for four months. We figured she would not have enough room in her luggage when it was time to come home. Folded up, this bag was so compact and lightweight, it took up almost no room in our own luggage for the trip over. Then, sure enough, she had a ton of clothes and shoes to send home with us and packed this bag full. We checked the bag and it made it through two international flights without a scratch. The BEST feature is the side strap that allows you to slide it over the handle of a rolling suitcase so you don't have to carry it. This is probably the most practical and the best-value item I have purchased in years. " — Tosa Mom

Felucca boats sailing on the River Nile, at Aswan. Trees are dotted among the buildings in the background.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

Senanque Abbey with blooming lavender field (Provence, France).

Rows of purple, fragrant flowers are a treat to see and smell. But when lavender is in full bloom, destinations around the world celebrate their flowers with everything from lavender-flavored ice cream to yoga sessions amid the fields.

From Provence to Albuquerque, here’s where you can check out the prettiest lavender-filled fields during this season’s bloom.

When Does Lavender Bloom?

In the Northern Hemisphere, lavender blooms in the summer months, typically from mid-May until August in the United States.

For instance, the peak bloom at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Farm, a 25-acre lavender farm in Albuquerque, is expected to be late June or early July. Farmers then harvest the lavender when flowers are about half to three-quarters of the way open, which is typically mid-July, depending upon growth. Lavender paints Provence and the south of France purple in the summer, with July typically the best month to visit.

In Australia, lavender blooms year-round in Kooroomba, which, about an hour from Brisbane, Queensland, doesn’t experience a true winter, making it ideal for these sun-loving flowers.

While lavender is synonymous with Provence, there’s an abundance of flower fields in the U.S. where you can check out this season’s lavender blooms.

Here’s a list of popular places to see and experience the lavender blooms in the U.S.:

1. Los Poblanos in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Los Poblanos

Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Farm harvests its lavender for everything from gin to lotions and incorporates the flower into treatments at its spa. This summer, the farm will host an outdoor music series from May through September every Wednesday evening with creative cocktails from the Rio Grande Valley Rescue Truck.

2. Washington

Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm

In Thurston County, the Thurston Bountiful Byway is a 60-mile loop in the Pacific Northwest that connects farms and locally owned shops, and lavender fields are in peak bloom in July and August, beckoning visitors to stroll through the fields. Some highlights include the Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm, where 13 varieties of lavender blooms, and the Schirm Loop Homestead Lavender Farm where you can see views of Mt. Rainier in the backdrop. While in the area, get a coconut-lavender lemonade at Shiplap Shop and peruse the Olympia Farmers Market.

Over on the Long Beach Peninsula, the Willapa Valley Lavender Farm hosts a free music festival among the fields. For those who want to grow their own lavender, the farm also leads tours, teaching newbies how to propagate, grow, plant, and harvest lavender, as well as how to dry and distill oils.

3. Versailles, Kentucky

Kentucky Castle

See a field of lavender at a fairytale-like castle in Kentucky. The 5th Annual Lavender Festival at the Kentucky Castle is June 20-22.

4. Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Peace Valley Lavender Farm

At Peace Valley Lavender Farm just outside of Philadelphia, visitors can pick their own bunch of lavender for $8 to $12. Then, head across the street to go for a walk or bike ride at Lake Galena.

5. Springfield, Missouri Area

Closeup of lavender on a sunny day in Springfield, Missouri.

Warm summers and rich soil make lavender fields in Springfield pop. Some places to see the blooms include Black and Blue Berry Farm , which serves iced lavender lattes, Lavender Falls Farm hosts dinners with live music and sells lavender-infused goodies, and Swank Lavender Farm lets guests cut their own bundles of lavender.

6. Sonoma County, California

Bees and blooms in Sonoma County.

June is Lavender Month in Sonoma County , and, while you can buy lavender products from many of the farms here year-round, the harvest season is when they open up to the public for tours and events like the Wellness Seminar Series among rolling purple hills at Monte-Bellaria di California.

7. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

La Grange Lavender Co

Opening for their first season, La Grange Lavender Co will offer U-pick options and has recipes on its site so you can bring home your fresh bundles of lavender to make everything from lavender sugar cookies to a simple syrup with the flower to be used in cocktails or teas. The farm will also offer art classes and workshops, plus lead yoga sessions amid the fragrant lavender fields.

Places Outside of the U.S. to See Lavender Bloom

1. provence, france.

Endless lavender field with little shed and flying hot air balloon at a sunrise time in Valensole, ... [+] Provence, France

Provence is perhaps the most famous destination for all things lavender. One of the best ways to experience the lavender fields here is to take a stroll along the Chemin des Lavandes (Lavender Road) in Sault. The 2.4-mile trail winds through Provence’s gorgeous, lavender-scented landscapes.

2. Tasmania, Australia

Bridestowe Lavender Estate

One of the world’s most famous lavender farms is Bridestowe Lavender Estate where manicure fields are beneath the backdrop of Mount Arthur. The best time of the year to see (and smell) the lavender is during the Festival of Flowers that happens from Dec. 1 to Jan. 31, which is the peak bloom period. However, the estate is open year-round and the visitor center is stocked with lavender oil, dried flowers. Visitors can also take home flower honeys, artisan jams, loose leaf lavender teas, and try lavender ice cream.

Tasmania is also home to the Lavender Goat Farm , where guests can hand-pick fresh lavender bloom and see how lavender oil is distilled.

3. Near Brisbane, Queensland

Kooroomba , a lavender farm and vineyard in the Fassifern Valley at Mt. Alford, about an hour from Brisbane, grows up to half dozen types of lavender, including a French Lavender that flowers nearly year-round. Visitors can come to enjoy the lavender wafting in the air, snap photos, enjoy lavender meals at the on-site restaurant, and pick up some souvenirs from the gift shop. The estate also has a lovely chapel perfect for weddings and a boutique winery for vino tasting.

4. Hokkaido, Japan

This is the summer flower field in Nakafurano town in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan.

Not only is Japan a primo spot for cherry blossom viewing, but Furano’s lavender fields draw crowds starting in late June, and the perennials peak from mid July to early August. In addition to visiting the fields, tourists can try delicacies like lavender ice cream or and juice, watch fireworks above the lavender fields, and take a ski lift to the top of a hill to see a ski slope turn into a lavender field. Stay in a luxury condominium nearby at Fenix Furano or Fenix West .

5. Dunedin, New Zealand

Lavender Row

Stay in a B&B on a lavender farm at Lavender Row . The farm grows, harvests, and distils lavender to make essential oils. Guests can stroll through the fields, picnic among the lavender, and take a tour of the lavender distillery.

Everything to Pack For Your Next London Trip — From Walking Shoes to an Umbrella

lavender travel pack

There's truly no place like London. Even after several trips to England's storied capital, I still find myself pining for more. With the city's rich history, diverse food culture, elaborate architecture, and unmatched fashion offerings, London is a mecca for all types of travelers — whether you're a foodie, historian, or bonafide fashion girlie (I like to think I'm a little of all three).

Most recently, I was able to visit London, England by way of PrettyLittleThing , the UK-based fashion retailer known for its size-inclusive options and vast occasionwear category. The brand's headquarters are in Manchester — which is a short train ride away from London — but the label also has showrooms in other major cities. Unlike past trips, I got to embrace the city in its most quintessential form, with afternoon tea appointments, garden walks around Kensington Palace, and even a double-decker bus tour that offered a quick way to take in London's most iconic sights.

Now, with a couple visits under my belt, I'm confident that I've finally mastered the ultimate London packing list. From comfortable walking shoes and personal carry-on bags to editor-approved travel accessories and seasonal coats , there are a handful of items that can elevate your next long haul flight or trip abroad for the better. If you've ever wondered what to wear in London or what to pack for London, I've created a comprehensive guide that'll simplify planning for your next trip, that way you can focus your time on what really matters — keeping tabs on Royal Family sightings (duh!).

Best Packing Tips For London

My ultimate packing tip for any trip abroad is to embrace a "less is more" mindset. Instinct is to fill your suitcase with as much clothing as possible, that way you're prepared for whatever your itinerary entails. But London is a shopping haven and one of several cities where you should anticipate leaving with much more than what you came with; every time I've visited, I've either shipped stuff back or seriously contemplated purchasing another carry-on suitcase just to ensure I had extra packing space. Focus on wardrobe essentials and basics that you can repurpose for multiple outfits, like white T-shirts, khaki trousers, or black loafers.

Another key recommendation is to expect the unexpected — especially on the weather front. London has a proneness for afternoon rainstorms, even if they aren't always forecasted correctly. Don't let this hinder your trip; instead, lean into the city's moodier weather by packing correctly.

A waterproof trench coat or weather-friendly jacket will be your safest fashion bet, as it's a style you can layer for all times of day — whether you're heading out for a morning walk around Hyde Park, prepping for afternoon tea in Chelsea, or enjoying some vintage shopping in Camden. You'll want an umbrella handy at all times and can expect to do a lot of walking, even if you plan to take advantage of the city's metro line .

Ahead, keep reading for our expert-recommended London packing guide, with products that are perfect for all travelers — whether it's your first time in England or you're a seasoned visitor.

A Tech Essential

A Tech Essential

Tacomege Transparent Ring Grip ($4)

My most niche packing recommendation is this phone ring grip, which has a couple different benefits. Firstly, a lot of London sightseeing involves looking up at old buildings or churches, and this accessory provides better grip support so that you can take photos on your phone with only one hand, rather than needing both. Additionally, while London is generally a safe city, it does have a lot of incidents involving phone theft — i.e. robbers literally grabbing devices from people's hands while they're using them. This ring grip offers an extra layer of protection so that you can hold onto your phone more tightly.

Main Image

A Coin Purse

Small Leather Coin Purse ($7, originally $13)

Whenever I travel abroad, I like to bring along a small coin purse in addition to my normal wallet, that way I can keep the coins I collect separate from my normal US currency. In London, the currency is referred to as a British pound, and includes sterling coinage — often with distinct designs. While you can get away with strictly using an international credit card while traveling throughout the city, I like to carry a small amount of physical currency just in case.

Main Image

A Wrinkle Spray

Downy Wrinkle Release Spray ($8)

While many high-end London hotels come equipped with in-room ironing boards, others do not — which means you either need to travel with a portable steamer or opt for something more space-friendly like this Downy Wrinkle Release Spray. It's easy to use; simply spray it on the fabric of choice (ideally lighter, more delicate pieces), tug and smooth out wrinkles, then allow it some time to dry. Not only is it effective at lifting wrinkles from clothes, but it also boasts a fresh linen scent that masks odors, too.

Main Image

A TSA-Approved Toiletry Bag

Morfone 16-Pack Travel Bottles Set ($8, originally $10)

Even when I check a bag, I still prefer to have my toiletries and makeup pouch on the flight; this just gives me insurance that if my suitcase doesn't make it to my final destination, I won't have to worry about replacing my skin-care or makeup products once I land (which oftentimes cost more than my clothes). From London to Paris, Copenhagen, and even Amsterdam, this travel toiletry set has been a staple on all of my trips abroad. It comes with plenty of bottles for liquids and moisturizers, and I've never had a problem getting through security or customs with it. See why I love this Amazon toiletry bag so much in this review of the Morfone Travel Bottles Set .

Main Image

A Portable Door Lock

AceMining Portable Door Lock ($15, originally $21)

While it might not be applicable to all UK hotels, many of the ones I've stayed at in cities like London and Manchester don't have deadbolts on the hotel room doors. The rooms are still equipped with basic locking systems, but if you (like me) have watched one too many TikTok videos on hotel safety etiquette , I recommend traveling with this portable door lock to be extra safe — especially if you're a solo traveler.

Main Image

A Guide Book

"London: A Guide for Curious Wanderers" Hardcover Book ($16, originally $22)

One of my best recommendations for first-time travelers to London — or even those who have visited before — is to invest in a quality guidebook. The city has such an expansive history and I find that without the right direction, I often miss out on understanding the significance of certain sights, palaces, and even parks. I purchased this copy from Daunt Books in Marylebone , a bookstore in central London, and it provided great context on some of the city's most overlooked gems.

Main Image

A Travel Adapter

Tessan Type G Travel Adapter ($16, originally $18)

If you didn't already know, many wall outlets and sockets are shaped differently in the UK than they are in the US — and even throughout most of Europe. You can purchase a universal travel adapter, but if you're looking for one that's specific to the UK (and countries like England or Ireland), I recommend this option from Amazon. It's equipped with multiple USB ports so you can charge several items at once, and works great for everything from iPhone chargers to hair styling tools and more.

Main Image

Pimple Patches

Cosrx Acne Pimple Patches ($16)

Longer flights always manage to bring even my most deep-rooted zits to fruition; I'll hop on a flight with clear skin and walk off of it with three fresh pimples. To counter developing zits at the source, I turn to these hydrocolloid acne patches from Cosrx. They're transparent and match my skin's tone, so they aren't super noticeable. The set also comes with patches in multiple sizes, so I can choose the option that's best suited to my spots.

Main Image

A Compact Umbrella

Goothdurs Mini Travel Compact Windproof Umbrella ($17)

London is known for its rainy weather, with high precipitation rates in nearly every season — though the spring and fall can be especially wet. I've always encountered multiple rainstorms whenever I've visited the city, which is why having an umbrella with you at all times is so essential. I love this compact option from Amazon because it's tiny and designed to fit in even the smallest of bags, including crossbody purses and larger clutches.

Main Image

Comfortable Walking Sneakers

PrettyLittleThing White Contrast Mesh Sneakers ($18, originally $45)

While London is a larger city, it's also incredibly walkable. If you have time, one of my favorite things is doing a walking loop from Soho or Mayfair to Hyde Park down through Kensington and the museum district, then venturing east through Chelsea and Westminster. It requires some pretty serious mileage, but the route gives you a taste of the city's best spots — including shops, theaters, palaces, and historical sites. Regardless of what your itinerary looks like, you'll want to pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes. I wore these chunky PrettyLittleThing sneakers on my most recent visit and loved the cloud-like, cushioned support they provided. Plus, white sneakers are easy to pair with any outfit.

Main Image

A Multifunctional Beauty Product

Merit Flush Cruelty-Free Blush Balm ($30)

London is my favorite city in the world, which means that whenever I visit, I want to spend as much time exploring and as little time in my room as possible. To keep my makeup looking fresh for those longer days outside of the hotel, I like having this blush balm handy. It's compact, boasts a rosy tint, and is easy to apply in restaurant or shop bathrooms. It's also great if you're bouncing between appointments or tours and don't necessarily have time to freshen up at your hotel before dinner.

Main Image

An Evening Dress

PrettyLittleThing Black Plisse One-Shoulder Ruched Midi Dress ($30, originally $50)

You can't beat London's nightlife scene. Whether you're attending a cabaret show at Lio London, indulging in a couple drinks at The Prince, or planning to catch a show in the West End, there's so much happening on any given night. With that, I recommend packing a formal black dress that can work for a variety of dress codes — just like this midi style from PrettyLittleThing. It's sophisticated, sexy, and endlessly comfortable, plus you can easily dress it up or down depending on the occasion.

Main Image

Wireless Headphones

Apple AirPods (2nd Generation) Wireless Ear Buds ($80, originally $129)

Few things in life are better than exploring a new city while listening to your favorite music. It's a euphoric experience that can cement a memory in a whole new way; whenever I hear a song that I listened to while in a specific city, I'm immediately transported back to that moment in time and can reminisce. Prior to trips, I'll even put together a playlist with songs that I think match the vibe of the destination and season — see my latest London-inspired Spotify playlist for further proof. These Apple AirPods ensure you can listen to your favorite tunes without the hassle of unnecessary cords.

Main Image

A Travel Tote

MZ Wallace Medium Metro Deluxe Tote ($275)

I once described this as my "Mary Poppins-esque bag" in a review of the MZ Wallace Tote , and I stand by that description. With 11 separate compartments, it's remarkable just how much I can actually squeeze into this travel bag. Not only does it fit seamlessly under airplane seats, but it's also easy to store in overhead bins on trains (including London railways).

Main Image

A Trench Coat

A Day's March Milli Trench Coat ($340)

Trench coats feel synonymous with London fashion, particularly during the city's rainier months. I love this style from A Day's March because it has a water-repellant coating that's designed to withstand even the harshest weather conditions. The jacket's oversize fit provides a more lived-in feel, while the deep side pockets offer plenty of space for holding my iPhone, umbrella, or even wallet.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
