Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister jointly inaugurate new Airstrip and a Jetty at Agalega Island in Mauritius

February 29, 2024

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Mauritius, H.E. Mr Pravind Jugnauth jointly inaugurated the new Airstrip and St. James Jetty along with six community development projects at the Agalega Island in Mauritius via video conferencing today. The inauguration of these projects is a testimony to the robust and decades-old development partnership between India and Mauritius and will fulfil the demand for better connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega, strengthen maritime security and foster socio-economic development. The inauguration of these projects is significant as it follows the recent launch of UPI and RuPay Card services in Mauritius by the two leaders on 12 February 2024.

Prime Minister of Mauritius, H.E. Mr Pravind Jugnauth said that India and Mauritius are making history today with the joint inauguration of the new Airstrip and St. James Jetty along with six community development projects at the Agalega Island in Mauritius. Terming the event as a symbol of the exemplary partnership between the two nations, Prime Minister Jugnauth thanked Prime Minister Modi for giving a new dimension to the Mauritius-India relationship and also expressed gratitude for being present today. "Setting up of the new airstrip and jetty facility in Agalega is the fulfillment of yet another Mauritian dream”, PM Jugnauth said and lauded India’s contribution to entirely finance the project. He conveyed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Modi on behalf of the Government and the people of Mauritius for giving special consideration to the island nation since assuming office in India. He lauded Prime Minister Modi's strong leadership and statesmanship across the world and underlined that the Indian diaspora has established itself as a global powerhouse of values, knowledge and success. He informed that Mauritius has become the first nation to adopt the ‘Jan Aushadhi Scheme’ which allows the sourcing of about 250 high-quality medicines from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India, thereby benefiting the people of Mauritius at large and imparting further momentum to the partnership between the two countries. Prime Minister Jugnauth concluded his address by thanking Prime Minister Modi for helping Mauritius realize such major transformational projects which will significantly enhance the capabilities and capacities in marine surveillance and security while also meeting the development objectives.

Addressing the occasion, the Prime Minister said that this is his 5th meeting with the Prime Minister of Mauritius, H.E. Mr Pravind Jugnauth in the last 6 months which is proof of a vibrant, strong and unique partnership between India and Mauritius. He said that Mauritius is a key partner of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ and a special partner under Vision SAGAR. "As members of Global South, we have common priorities and the last 10 years have seen unprecedented momentum in the relations between the two countries and new heights of mutual cooperation have been achieved”, the Prime Minister said. Touching upon the old language and cultural ties, the Prime Minister recalled the UPI and Rupay Card that have provided modern digital connectivity to the relationship.

The Prime Minister underlined that development partnerships have been the foundation pillars of the political partnerships between the two nations and that the developmental contributions made by India are based on Mauritius’s priorities, be it security to the EEZ or health security. "India has always respected Mauritius’s needs and acted as the first responder”, the Prime Minister said, highlighting India’s long-standing support to the island nation, be it the Covid pandemic or oil spill. He said that the prime objective of India is a positive change for the people of Mauritius. In the last 10 years, the Prime Minister informed that India has extended a credit line of 1,000 million US dollars along with 400 million US dollars worth of assistance to the people of Mauritius. He remarked that India has been fortunate to contribute to the development of metro rail lines, community development projects, social housing, ENT Hospital, Civil Service College and sports complexes infrastructures in Mauritius.

The Prime Minister expressed happiness that he could fulfill his promise to the people of Agalega which he made in 2015. "These days, this is being called Modi ki Guarantee in India. These facilities that have been jointly inaugurated today will enhance ease of living”, said the Prime Minister. It will improve connectivity between the North and Southern parts of Mauritius and will improve administrative connection with the mainland. Medical evacuation and transportation of school kids will improve, he said.

Referring to traditional and non-traditional challenges in the Indian Ocean Region which affect the two economies, PM Modi said that India and Mauritius are the natural partners in maritime security to deal with these challenges. "We are actively working to ensure security, prosperity and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. We are cooperating in all areas like monitoring of Exclusive Economic Zone, joint patrolling, hydrography, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief”, the Prime Minister of India added. He emphasized that today’s inauguration of the airstrip and jetty at Agalega will further advance cooperation between the two countries while also strengthening the blue economy of Mauritius.

Lauding Prime Minister Jugnauth’s decision to establish Jan Ayushadhi Kendras in Mauritius, the Prime Minister said that with this Mauritius has become the first country to join India’s Jan Aushadhi initiative which will benefit the people of Mauritius by providing better quality Made-in-India generic medicines.

Concluding the address, the Prime Minister congratulated his Mauritian counterpart for his far-sighted vision and dynamic leadership. He expressed confidence that India and Mauritius relations will attain new heights in the times to come.

EAM Jaishankar reaffirms India's continued support to Mauritius in its quest for progress

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar calls on Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, in Port Louis.

PORT LOUIS: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday reaffirmed India's consistent and continued support to Mauritius in its quest for progress as he held wide-ranging talks with the country's leadership to cement the bilateral ties which are critical for the future of the Indian Ocean region.

Jaishankar is here for a two-day visit for "productive engagements" with the leadership of Mauritius to take forward the special bilateral ties.

The visit to the Indian Ocean island nation marks one of the first bilateral engagements undertaken by Jaishankar following his re-appointment in the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.

Jaishankar said his visit to Mauritius - what he termed as "this beautiful country"- underscores the strength and depth of the bilateral ties.

"It is also an opportunity to underline India's unwavering commitment to its special and enduring partnership with Mauritius," he said at an event attended by Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.

"India's ties with Mauritius have blossomed into a robust and multifaceted partnership. The bilateral relation with Mauritius serves as a role model for India's successful development collaboration abroad," Jaishankar said.

"India remains committed to strengthening this critical partnership that is so important for the future of the Indian Ocean region," he said, amidst the Chinese navy's increasing forays into the region.

During the meeting, Jaishankar and PM Jugnauth discussed "various aspects of bilateral ties, including the Development Partnership, Defence and Maritime Corporation, economic and trade ties, and people-to-people linkages," he said.

"I reiterated India's consistent and continued support to Mauritius in its quest for progress and prosperity," he said.

The External Affairs Minister concluded by affirming that India remains committed to strengthening the critical partnership with Mauritius that is "so important for the future of the Indian Ocean region".

The event saw the inauguration of 12 High Impact Community Development Projects that are funded by India, the exchange of MoUs on education, culture, the digitisation of Immigration Archives and the exchange of Project Plan Documents between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC).

India also paid the royalty payment cheque of MUR 1.3 million towards revenues earned from the sale of Mauritian nautical charts produced by the India-Mauritius joint hydrographic service, which is nearly two decades old.

Jaishankar and Jugnauth also handed over the first Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to "two very fine specimens of seventh-generation Indian origin Mauritians," described by the EAM as "This special carve-out for Mauritius further demonstrates our special and enduring ties."

Earlier, Jaishankar conveyed the "personal greetings and warm regards" of Prime Minister Modi to Jugnauth and also told him that the people of India appreciated very deeply his presence as the Modi government was sworn in for the third time, last month.

Jaishankar also complimented the Mauritian Prime Minister for his leadership in seeing Mauritius, through the COVID challenge, and to the people of that country "for the tremendous resilience shown in overcoming, what is really a once-in-a-century event."

The visit underscores the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and is a reflection of India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy', Vision SAGAR, and commitment to the Global South.

According to the Indian High Commission at Mauritius website, India has close, long-standing relations with Mauritius, an island nation in the Western Indian Ocean, owing to historical, demographic and cultural reasons.

A key reason for the specialities is the fact that Indian-origin people comprise nearly 70 per cent of the island's population of 1.2 million, it added.

India signs five pacts with Mauritius, offers $500 million credit during PM Modi's visit

Port Louis: India on Wednesday offered USD 500 million concessional line of credit to Mauritius for key infrastructure projects as the two nations signed five pacts, including on ocean economy, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the strategic Indian Ocean island nation.

“I was pleased to offer a concessional line of credit of USD 500 million for civil infrastructure projects for Mauritius. We intend to quickly build the petroleum storage and bunkering facility in Mauritius,” Prime Minister Modi said at the signing of the pacts following talks with his Mauritian counterpart Anerood Jugnauth.

“I consider our security cooperation to be a cornerstone of our strategic partnership. Our agreement on cooperation in Ocean Economy is an important step in deepening our scientific and economic partnership,” he said.

Mauritius, in turn, offered India cooperation on information exchange on taxation. “I also conveyed our deep appreciation for the support and cooperation offered by Mauritius on information exchange on taxation,” Modi said.

During talks with Modi, Mauritian Premier Jugnauth raised the issue related to Mauritius-India Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty. “I have requested PM Modi to give his full support on DTAA as it is of prime importance to global business sector,” he said at the signing of the agreements.

The India-Mauritius Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) is being revised amid concerns that Mauritius is being used for round-tripping of funds into India even though that country has always maintained that there have been no concrete evidence of any such misuse.

Traditionally, Mauritius has been one of the biggest sources of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India.

The five pacts signed included a MoU between the two countries in the field of ‘Ocean Economy’ which will provide an extensive framework for cooperation, a novel and critical area of sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region.

The other agreements signed were a MoU for the improvement in sea and air transportation facilities at Agalega Island of Mauritius, MoU on cooperation in the field of traditional system of medicine and homoeopathy, programme for cultural cooperation between 2015-18 and a pact on import of fresh mango from India.

India also offered to establish a second cyber city in Mauritius after it helped the island set up the first one a decade ago.

Describing his meeting with the the Mauritian Prime Minister as “excellent”, Modi said the outcome of their talks were “truly significant”.

“Our agreement today on the development of Agalega Island is a major stride in our cooperation in infrastructure sector,” Modi said. “People-to-people contacts are at the foundation of our relationship. We always stand in solidarity and support for each other. It comes naturally to us from our friendship & shared values,” he said.

Modi also welcomed Mauritius’ decision to make India its preferential partner in developing its security capabilities. He will participate in the joint commissioning of India-built Offshore Patrol Vessel Barracuda on Thursday.

The two Prime Ministers also discussed ways to combat climate change.

Earlier, Modi also called Mauritius President Rajkeswur Purryag. He was received by Prime Minister Jugnauth on arrival and was accorded a ceremonial welcome.

India also agreed to technically waiving off the visa fee for Mauritius nationals in respect of the new visa on arrival system.

“We have taken the opportunity to review the issue of preferential trade agreement signed in August 2006 between the two countries to further enhance market access and have agreed on the way forward,” Jugnauth said.

“I appreciate that Prime Minister Modi and his government have agreed to redirect the Indian line of credit of USD 200 million initially meant for the light railway transit system to projects in the water and energy sector,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi said he was looking forward to the Mauritius National Day celebrations on Thursday.

“I am grateful to you and the people of Mauritius for the invitation as the Chief Guest of the National Day tomorrow,” he said. Modi is also scheduled to address the Mauritian Parliament on Thursday.

PM Narendra Modi with the prime minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth | Twitter

New Delhi : Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, the Prime Minister of Mauritius since 2017, has arrived in India on a private visit, a month after winning a hard-fought general election.

Jugnauth, son of former Mauritius PM Anerood Jugnauth, is set to meet his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, as both countries seek to take their ties to the next level amid the island nation’s increasing role in the Indian Ocean Region.

India is looking to strengthen maritime security, and is scouting for partners to achieve its goals. Discussions around how Mauritius can play a role in India’s ocean initiatives will be hence central to the visit, sources told ThePrint.

Jagnauth and Modi already share a good rapport, which could help Mauritius act as India’s gateway to the African continent, the sources said. India is set to host the India-Africa Summit next year.

“Mauritius has a big role to play as an Indian Ocean country and as an African country. India and Mauritius have close cooperation on the blue economy and maritime security,” said Rajiv Bhatia, veteran diplomat and distinguished fellow at Gatewayhouse India.

He said India and Mauritius have always been cordial partners with a special relationship.

“Even though (Jugnauth’s visit) is a private one, it is nevertheless important since India is now preparing for the upcoming India-Africa Summit,” he said.

Fourth visit since 2017

This is Jugnauth’s fourth visit to India since taking over from his father as PM in January 2017.

On his first visit, in May 2017, India and Mauritius had signed an agreement on maritime security.

Then, he visited India in January 2019 as the chief guest at the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, where he also met industry leaders in Mumbai.

Jugnauth’s next visit was in May 2019, when he flew in to attend the swearing-in ceremony for the Modi government on its second term.

India-Mauritius relations

In early November, Jagnauth’s Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) party came to power in Mauritius, winning 35 out of the 62 seats in the National Assembly.

PM Modi was one of the first world leaders to call him and send him congratulatory messages.

“Congratulations @PKJugnauth on your electoral victory. We have worked closely together to strengthen fraternal relations and development partnership between India and Mauritius. I look forward to speaking with you soon and to continuing our engagement. @MauritiusPM,” Modi said in a tweet on 9 November.

India has also offered its support to Mauritius in its claims to the island of Diego Garcia, which continues to be ruled by the UK and is most famous as being home to a US military base in the Indian Ocean.

Diego Garcia and Chagos Islands are all part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, though the United Nations, in a directive earlier this year , rejected Britain’s claim on the islands, urging the original inhabitants of the land to return.

Important for Indian economy

According to sources, Prime Minister Jugnauth could also meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, as Mauritius remains India’s top source of foreign direct investment (FDI).

India received a total FDI of $8.08 billion from Mauritius during the fiscal 2018-19, accounting for almost 32 per cent of the country’s total FDI inflows, according to official data.

However, the issue of FDI inflows remains an “important and delicate issue”, since a bulk of these investments are not directly from Mauritius, but are routed through the island nation. This, the sources said, remains concern for India in terms of channelisation of black money and money-laundering issues.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi today along with the President of Sri Lanka, Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr Pravind Jugnauth jointly inaugurated the launch of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, and also RuPay card services in Mauritius via video conferencing.

Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr Pravind Jugnauth informed that co-branded Rupay card will be designated as domestic card in Mauritius. Today’s launch, the Prime Minister said, will greatly facilitate the citizens of both countries.

President of Sri Lanka Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe congratulated the Prime Minister for the consecration of Shri Ram Mandir at the Ayodhya Dham. He also emphasized the centuries-old economic relations. The President hoped to maintain the momentum of connectivity and deepening of the relationship between the two countries.

Addressing the occasion, the Prime Minister said that today marks a special day for three friendly nations of India, Sri Lanka and Mauritius when their historic connections take the form of modern digital connect. He said that it is proof of the government’s commitment towards the development of the people. The Prime Minister underlined fintech connectivity will further strengthen cross-border transactions and connections. “India’s UPI or United Payments Interface comes in a new role today – Uniting Partners with India”, the Prime Minister emphasized.

The Prime Minister underlined that digital public infrastructure has brought about a revolutionary change in India, where the smallest of vendors in the remotest of villages are transacting via UPI and making digital payments. Speaking about the convenience and speed of UPI transactions, the Prime Minister informed that more than 100 billion transactions took place via UPI last year worth Rs 2 lakh crores or 8 trillion Sri Lankan rupees or 1 trillion Mauritius rupees. The Prime Minister also mentioned making last-mile delivery through the GEM Trinity of bank accounts, Aadhar and mobile phones where Rs 34 lakh crores or 400 billion US dollars has been transferred into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The Prime Minister stressed that “India’s policy is ‘Neighborhood First’. Our maritime vision is SAGAR i.e. Security and growth for all in the region. India does not see its development separately from its neighbors.”

Referring to the Vision Document that was adopted during the last visit of the Sri Lankan President, the Prime Minister highlighted the strengthening financial connectivity as its key component. With Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth also, these discussions were conducted as he was the special guest during the G20 Summit.

The Prime Minister expressed the confidence that connection with UPI will benefit Sri Lanka and Mauritius and digital transformation will get a boost, local economies will witness positive change and tourism will be promoted. “I am confident that Indian tourists will give priority to destinations with UPI. PM Modi expressed delight that after Nepal, Bhutan, Singapore and UAE in the Gulf in Asia, now from Mauritius RuPay card is being launched in Africa. This will also facilitate the people coming to India from Mauritius. The need to buy hard currency will also reduce. The UPI and RuPay card system will enable real-time, cost-effective and convenient payments in our own currency. In the coming time, we can move towards cross-border remittances i.e. Person to Person (P2P) payment facility, the Prime Minister added.

The Prime Minister underlined that today’s launch symbolizes the success of Global South cooperation. “Our relations are not just about transactions, it is a historical relation”, PM Modi emphasized highlighting the strength of people-to-people relations between the three nations. India has emerged as a leader in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure. The Prime Minister has strongly emphasized sharing our development experiences and innovation with partner countries. Given India’s robust cultural and people-to-people linkages with Sri Lanka and Mauritius, the launch will benefit a wide cross-section of people through a faster and seamless digital transaction experience and enhance digital connectivity between the countries.

The launch will enable the availability of UPI settlement services for Indian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius as well as for Mauritian nationals travelling to India. The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable Mauritian banks to issue cards based on RuPay mechanism in Mauritius and facilitate usage of RuPay Card for settlements in India and Mauritius.

Indians confuse Mauritius with Maldives, give rise to comedy of errors

After the latest row between india and the maldives, the mauritius tourism board's attempt at wooing indian tourists saw people react in anger, which was a result of confusion. people mistook mauritius for the maldives. this is what happened next..

  • Indians mistook Mauritius for Maldives on a promotional post.
  • Mauritius Tourism clarified the confusion, promoting Mauritius as a tourist destination.
  • Mauritius aims to attract more Indian tourists amidst Maldives stand-off.

"Not interested if you disrespect us and our PM," commented an enraged Indian on X.

The comment followed another, which said, "We now found a better option in our country itself, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep".

Next, a "Boycott the Maldives" comment followed the two comments from another X handle, on the same post which promoted "exciting adventures and experiences" in "a tropical tourist destination".

This is a comedy of errors. The angry comments were on a post that was promoting Mauritius, and not the Maldives.

The post to which Indians were reacting in anger was from the handle of 'Mauritius Tourism (India)'. The post read, "Mauritius welcomes Indians to explore, discover, and Feel Our Island Energy in 2024! Tons of exciting adventures and experiences await you. Plan your holiday today!"

China-leaning Mohamed Muizzu defeated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was pro-India.

Following PM Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep, a few Maldivian lawmakers, including a minister of the Mohamed Muizzu government, were seen making derogatory rants against PM Modi, India and the Indians.

Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "clown" and "puppet of Israel" on X.

'NOT MALDIVES, THIS IS MAURITIUS'

However, in their anger at the Maldives, some Indians mistakenly directed their anger at Mauritius too.

This is Mauritius

Turns out, the ones who commented on the post took Mauritius for the Maldives.

Mauritius and India also share a profound connection dating back to the 19th-century British colonial period, resulting in a large Indian-origin population on the islands. This is why Mauritius is also called Mini India, added the Mauritius Tourism website.

Hence, Mauritius, importing 15-20% of its imports from India, is now looking to woo and welcome more and more tourists from India.

  • Before departing, PM Modi emphasised the importance of Brunei and Singapore in India's 'Act East' policy, highlighting that these nations are crucial partners in advancing India's relationship with the broader ASEAN region.  "Today, I am embarking on a first-ever bilateral visit to Brunei Darussalam. As we celebrate 40 years of our diplomatic relations, I look forward to my meetings with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other esteemed members of the Royal family to advance our historical relationship to new heights," PM Modi stated in a departure statement shared by the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs noted that PM Modi's visit to Brunei aims to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including defence, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health, capacity building, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. • Speaking to news agency ANI, Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Shipak Ambule, also highlighted the importance of PM Modi's visit, describing it as "a very important visit," coinciding with the early phase of both PM Modi's third tenure and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's tenure. He said, "If you see the bilateral trade, it's more than doubled in the last 10 years." "Our intention is to take it even further, we also combine it with investments. This will be the first bilateral visit of an indian prime minister to brunei, secretary east said at a special media briefing. the visit will also mark 40 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between india and brunei, he said..

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, is scheduled to visit Brunei Darussalam during 03-04 September. After that, he will travel to Singapore at the invitation of Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore. It is scheduled between 04-05 September... Why is PM Modi's Brunei visit significant?

During the visit, the Prime Minister will engage in bilateral discussions on all aspects of our bilateral relations and cooperation with Brunei and also explore new areas for cooperation. "We share a very warm and friendly relationship with Brunei and our engagements cover multiple areas such as defence, trade and investment, energy, space, technology, health, capacity building, culture and vibrant people-to-people exchanges," said MEA.

Brunei is home to about 14,000 Indians wherein the MEA underscored they engaged in noble professions such as doctors and teachers. The Secretary said the Indians in Brunei have earned goodwill and respect for their contributions to its economy and society.

"We have received valuable support from Brunei in our space program. We have three MoUs with Brunei in this area. We established a telemetry tracking and command station in Brunei in 2000 and this tracks and monitors all our eastward launches of satellites and satellite launch vehicles," he said.

"Defence is another important pillar in our bilateral cooperation. We have an MoU on defence, which was signed in 2016 and has since been renewed in 2021. It provides a framework for our collaboration that covers regular exchanges at high levels, naval and coast guard ship exchange visits, training and joint exercises, and participation in each other's exhibitions. The visit will also take place in light of our 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, which we are celebrating in 2025 and the 10th year of our strategic partnership with Singapore....", said the MEA official.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on official visits to Brunei and Singapore from Tuesday, September 3. PM Narendra Modi will visit Brunei on September 3-4 at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all existing sectors. It is the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to that country. It marks 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Brunei and Singapore beginning Tuesday.(ANI file)

“Over the next two days, will be visiting Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. During the various engagements in these nations, the focus will be on further deepening India’s ties with them. India-Brunei Darussalam diplomatic ties complete 40 glorious years. I look forward to meeting His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah,” Modi posted on X on Tuesday morning.

“In Singapore, I will hold talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. We are eager to further cement ties in key sectors,” he added.

What's on agenda?

On Modi's Brunei visit, ministry of external affairs' secretary (east) Jaideep Mazumdar said the prime minister will hold bilateral discussions on all aspects of relations and cooperation with Brunei.

“As you know, we share a very warm and friendly relationship with Brunei and our engagements cover multiple areas such as defence, trade and investment, energy, space, technology, health, capacity, building, culture and vibrant people-to-people exchanges,” ANI quoted Mazumdar as saying. "The Indian diaspora in Brunei is about 14,000 and they comprise a substantial number of doctors and teachers in Brunei who have earned goodwill and respect for their contributions to Brunei economy and society," he added. The MEA official added that Brunei is an important partner for India's ‘Act East Policy’ and the vision for the Indo-Pacific. "As we mark a decade of our Act East policy this year, the visit assumes additional significance. Brunei has been our Country Coordinator in ASEAN from 2012 to 2015 and played a key role in our further engagements with ASEAN and continues to do so today," the MEA official added.

Modi's visit to Singapore

After Brunei, Modi will visit Singapore on September 4-5 at the invitation of his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong. He is visiting the country after nearly six years. During the visit, Prime Minister will call on President of Singapore H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam and interact with Singaporean leadership. Prime Minister will also meet with business leaders from Singapore, the ministry of external affairs said in a statement.
