How to manage privacy and security settings in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Safari on iPhone 7

Browsing on the internet is something most of us do just about every day, but there is always a slight element of danger, whether it's viruses, identity theft, or getting spoiled for Game of Thrones (DAMN IT).

If you want to have more control over your privacy and security while using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, here's how!

How to prevent cross-site tracking

How to block all cookies in safari, how to request that websites don't track you, how to get warnings about fraudulent websites, how to allow or deny camera and microphone access, how to see if websites have apple pay set up, how to clear your history and website data, how to remove all website data.

Ever been looking at shoes and then shoe ads suddenly pop up on your Facebook feed? That's cross-site tracking and it's a way of monitoring your online behavior to better cater advertising toward you. If you don't like that, then you can turn it off in Safari like this:

  • Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  • Tap Safari . You'll have to scroll down to find it.
  • Tap the switch next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking

Cookies are bits of your information that websites store in order to perhaps customize your experience in future or to save login information so that you don't have to constantly input your email address, for example. If you don't want Safari sites to save any of your info, then you can block all cookies like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Block All Cookies . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Block All Cookie

Adding to the above-mentioned cross-site tracking information, you can also get Safari to send requests to websites asking them not to track your behavior. This is added padding in cross-site tracking prevention.

  • Tap the switch next to Ask Websites Not To Track Me . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Ask Websites Not To Track Me

Safari can detect when websites are suspicious or may appear fraudulent, and if you enable the setting, you can get a warning before visiting those sites. You can also just hit "Ignore" if you know the site is legit.

  • Tap the switch next to Fraudulent Website Warning . It's down under Privacy & Security . Green is on.

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Fraudulent Website Warning

Some websites may want access to your camera and microphone — sites like Facebook — and Safari would therefore need that access. You can completely deny it like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access

Safari can automatically check to see if the site you're visiting supports Apple Pay. Here's how to enable it:

  • Tap the switch next to Check for Apple Pay . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Check for Apple Pay

If you've been looking up J-Law's nudes or scheming on Xmas gifts for the wife and she also uses your phone, you can clear your Safari browsing history, which will also clear out your browsing data like cookies, login information, and more.

  • Tap Clear History and Website Data .
  • Tap Clear History and Data in the pop-up.

Tap Safari, tap Clear History and Website Data, tap Clear History and Data

If you want to keep your browsing history but want to remove your data from Safari, you can just delete website data, which will remove cookies, login details, and more.

  • Tap Advanced at the bottom of the page.

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap Advanced

  • Tap Website Data .
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap Remove All Website Data .
  • Tap Remove Now .

Tap Website Data, tap Remove All Website Data, tap Remove Now

The Safari Settings You Should Tweak Right Now

macbook pro with macOS catalina on the screen

Your browser is your window onto the world, the app you rely on most during the day. You want to wring every last drop of usefulness out of it. It definitely pays to know all of the features and tricks your daily browser is capable of. For iOS users, that means mastering Safari: how to stay safe online, how to get stuff done faster, and more.

For a smoother online experience, take a few minutes to run through these Safari tweaks to make your life online a little smoother.

Safari is very concerned about the strength of your passwords—perhaps even more so than you are. To see whether you're using any weak passwords, or duplicating passwords across accounts, open the Safari menu and choose Preferences then Passwords . A yellow exclamation mark indicates a potential problem with one of your listed passwords.

You'll often want to carry on watching a video while doing something else, and Safari can help—with a video playing, click and hold the audio icon in the address bar, then choose Enter Picture in Picture . The pop-out video player can be repositioned and resized as needed, but keep the original tab open in the background while you work on other tasks.

Websites want a lot these days: access to your webcam, your mic, your location , and more. To check what a site does and does not have access to, click Safari then Settings for This Website . You can revoke any permissions you've previously given, stop content from auto-playing, and limit the number of pop-up windows that the website can show.

screenshot

It's taken a long time for Safari to support favicons (the little icons that represent websites), so you might as well take advantage; they also help you identify open tabs more easily as well. From the Safari menu, choose Preferences then Tabs , and then tick the checkbox labeled Show website icons in tabs to apply the change to the browser.

Having access to your recent browsing history can be useful for retracing your online steps, but you don't need it to follow you around for years. Open Safari then Preferences , switch to the General tab, then open Remove history items —you can delete browsing logs automatically after a day, week, fortnight, month, or year.

By default Safari just shows the domain name of the site you're visiting in the address bar, but this can make it tricky to work out exactly where you are on the web. To see the full URL instead, you need to open up the Safari menu, then the Preferences dialog, then switch to the Advanced tab—make sure the Show full website address box is ticked.

Image may contain File Text and Webpage

No productivity hack is ever going to beat an intuitive keyboard shortcut or two. You'll find a full list for Safari here and here , but some of our favorites include Space (and Shift+Space ) to scroll, Cmd+W to close a tab, Ctrl+Tab (and Shift+Ctrl+Tab ) to scroll through open tabs, and Cmd+L to jump straight to the Safari address bar at the top.

Safari, like every other Apple app, can be fully controlled with your voice in macOS Catalina. To enable the feature, open the Apple menu then choose System Preferences , Accessibility , Voice Control , and Enable Voice Control . It lets you speak out numbers for menus and links, zoom in and out, and much more—there's a full list of commands here .

screenshot

Safari has an entire Develop menu that's not displayed by default but which is very handy for power users. To show it, open the Safari menu then choose Preferences , then Advanced , then tick the box marked Show Develop menu in menu bar. The new menu then appears, enabling you to access options such as disabling images or extensions.

Clearing out a browser's cache can often improve performance in the long term, even if it takes a short-term hit while local files are refreshed and reset. To do this in Safari, you first need to enable the Develop menu (see the step above), then you can open it and choose Empty Caches . This wipes all of Safari's temporary files and data off the local disk.

Safari has borrowed a very useful feature from Windows: the ability to "snap" open tabs to the left or right of the screen, so you can compare two side-by-side. Open up the Window menu, then choose Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen to do just that—your other windows are then automatically docked on the opposite side.

screenshot

Apple devices all play wonderfully well together, as long as you're signed in on the same Apple ID, and jumping between open tabs on different devices is a breeze. To do this on Safari on macOS, you need to click on the Show tab overview button in the top right corner; you'll then see Safari tabs from your other devices listed lower down.

Who has time to read everything during the working day? No one! So make use of Safari's built-in Reading List tool. Use the Plus button on the left side of the address bar to add articles to the Reading List, then click the Show sidebar button (or View and Show Reading List Sidebar ) to bring up the list of all the posts you've saved during the day.

Safari gives you more control than you might have realized over the buttons and options that appear on the toolbar—having the tools you use most often in easy reach can make a big difference to your online productivity. To make changes, select View then Customize Toolbar , then just drag and drop the icons you need most often into the toolbar.

How to reset the Safari browser on your iPhone in 2 different ways

  • You can reset Safari on an iPhone by clearing cookies and erasing your browsing history.
  • There are two ways to reset your Safari data: through the Safari app itself, and through the Settings app.
  • Both methods will let your clear both your browsing history and cookies.

If you're looking to clear your Safari data, simply removing your Frequently Visited sites isn't going to address privacy concerns if you have cookies stored, for instance.

Fortunately, it's easy to reset all your browsing history and settings. Here are two ways to do it, one directly through Safari, and the other through your iPhone's Settings.

How to reset Safari on iPhone through the browser

1. At the bottom of an open Safari page, tap the book icon .

2. At the top of the menu that opens, tap the clock icon to open your history.

3. Tap Clear at the bottom of the page. A prompt menu will open to warn that you'll clear your history, cookies, and other data over a selected time period. Tap All time to reset your browser.

How to reset Safari on iPhone through the Settings app

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Search for or scroll down to Safari and open it.

3. Tap Clear History and Website Data in blue about halfway down the page.

4. A prompt menu will pop up. Tap Clear History and Data and wait a few moments while the iPhone processes your request. Once it does, all your data will have been cleared.

iOS 17 Safari Features: Profiles, Locked Private Browser, Shared Passwords, Updated Tracking Prevention and More

With every update to the iOS operating system, Apple adds new features to the built-in apps like Safari. In iOS 17 , Safari gains new privacy functionality, improvements to search, updated Siri integration, and more.

iOS 17 General Safari Feature

In ‌iOS 17‌, Apple expanded on Tab Groups with a Profile feature that is designed to let you separate your browsing for different use cases. You can create a "Work" profile and a "Personal" profile, for example, so all of your work-related browsing is kept separate from your personal browsing.

ios 17 safari profiles

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to Safari.
  • Tap on New Profile.
  • Select an icon, name, and background color for the profile.
  • Choose your settings for Favorites and Tabs.

From there, you can edit profiles by tapping into them in the Settings app. In Safari, tap on the Tabs icon with two overlapping squares, then tap on the middle icon and choose the "Profile" option to change which profile is active.

Locked Private Browsing Window

Private browsing windows are now locked and require secondary authentication to unlock and access. If you hand your unlocked phone over to someone and they attempt to open your Safari private browsing tab, access will be denied without a second Face ID / Touch ID scan or a passcode.

safari private browsing ios 17

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Safari.
  • Scroll down to Require ‌Face ID‌ (or ‌Touch ID‌) to Unlock Private Browsing.
  • Tap the toggle to turn it off and confirm with a ‌Face ID‌/‌Touch ID‌ scan. When disabled, the toggle will be gray.

Private Search Engine

In iOS 16 you can choose a default search engine to use with Safari, but in ‌iOS 17‌, you can choose separate search engines for standard browsing and private browsing.

ios 17 private search engine

  • Tap on Private Search Engine.
  • Tap on one of the Search Engine options to select it.
  • Exit out of the Settings.

Tracking URLs

URLs in ‌iOS 17‌ can be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL so that websites cannot track your browsing using URL identifiers. This function is enabled automatically for private browsing in ‌iOS 17‌, but it can be turned on for all browsing.

safari tracking all browsing ios 17

  • Tap on Advanced.
  • Tap on Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection.
  • Toggle on "All Browsing."

Turning this on will ensure that all URLs opened in Safari will strip the additional tracking information that's sometimes pasted on to the end of a URL.

Hide IP Address From Websites

In ‌iOS 17‌, there is an option to hide IP address from both trackers and websites or only trackers when using the iCloud Private Relay feature. With Trackers and Websites selected, IP address will be kept cloaked and websites will not be able to determine your location using that information.

ios 17 safari hide ip address

Search Improvements

Search is more responsive in ‌iOS 17‌, so it brings up search results more quickly. It also brings up a wider range of search suggestions for you to choose from.

ios 17 safari search

Listen to Page

‌Siri‌ in ‌iOS 17‌ can read a website to you, which is useful if you come across a long-form article or other content that you want to listen to while you do something else. The feature works as long as Reader View is available on a website.

ios 17 safari listen to page

  • Open up Safari.
  • Navigate to the content that you want ‌Siri‌ to read.
  • Tap on the Aa icon in the address bar.
  • Select the Listen to Page option.

From there, ‌Siri‌ will begin to read the content on the page. You can pause by tapping on the Pause Listening option, and resume with the Resume Listening option. If you lock your display, you will get dedicated playback controls.

‌Siri‌ will also read a page if you open up a website to a selected article and ask ‌Siri‌ to "Read this to me."

Shared Passwords and Passkeys

In ‌iOS 17‌ (and iPadOS 17 / macOS Sonoma ) there is an option to securely share passwords and passkeys with friends and family members. With the sharing feature, passwords for shared media accounts, utilities, bills, and more can be provided to multiple people.

ios 17 shared passwords

This is not strictly a Safari feature, but it does make logging into sites where you use shared login information simpler.

Privacy Settings

Note that privacy-focused settings that include Block All Cookies, Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement, and Check for Apple Pay have been relocated from the "Privacy & Security" section of the Safari settings to the "Advanced" section, which is more hidden.

How to customize Safari privacy and security settings on iPhone and iPad

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Want to check in on your Safari privacy and security settings? Follow along below for a look at what you can customize on iPhone and iPad and an explainer on each option.

Apple offers a host of security and privacy settings across iOS and iPadOS, and specifically within Safari settings, there are four options under Privacy & Security.

These include Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, Block All Cookies, Fraudulent Website Warning, and Check for Apple Pay. You’ll likely want to adjust these depending on your needs or preferences on iPhone and iPad .

  • Open Settings, swipe down and tap Safari
  • Swipe down again and look under Privacy & Security
  • Customize your settings, read more below for help on making a decision

Here’s how this looks:

Note: On Mac, you can head to Safari > Preferences > Privacy to see the same settings.

ios safari settings

Either temporarily or permanently, you may want to allow cookies, as many websites will require them.

Another consideration is cross-site tracking. This will allow websites to track what you’ve been looking at if you turn the prevention feature off. However, it will mean you’ll get more relevant ads served to you compared to when you prevent cross-site tracking.

Personally, I always keep Check for Apple Pay and Fraudulent Website Warning toggled on, as I only see an upside to using them.

You can tap on  About Safari & Privacy… to get a description of each one or read more below.

How to Reset Safari to Default Settings

Restoring default settings is a multistep process

ios safari settings

What to Know

  • First, remove the browser history: Select Safari in the menu bar > Clear History , then select All History > Clear History .
  • Remove cookies: Safari > Preferences . Select the Privacy tab > Manage Website Data > Remove All .
  • Clear cache: Safari > Preferences . Advanced > Select Show Develop menu in menu bar . Exit. Develop > Empty Caches .

This article explains how to reset Safari to default settings by removing Safari's history and cookies, clearing the cache, and disabling extensions. Instructions apply to Safari versions 11 through 14 and iOS.

Remove Browser History

The first step when resetting Safari is to remove your browser history. When you clear your browsing history, Safari removes data such as recent searches, the frequently visited site list, web page icons, the history of web pages you've visited, and more.

From Safari's menu bar, select Safari > Clear History

In the drop-down menu, select All History .

Select Clear History to complete the process.

To clear a particular website instead, navigate to History > Show History , select the website you want to clear, and press Delete .

Remove Cookies

When you remove all cookies from Safari, you'll lose personal registration data such as your name and address, shopping cart contents, preferred web page layouts, and more.

From Safari's menu bar, select Safari > Preferences .

Select the Privacy tab.

Select Manage Website Data .

Select Remove All .

Select Remove Now .

Select Done .

Clear Safari's Cache

When you clear Safari's cache, you're removing stored website data.

Select the Advanced tab.

Place a check next to Show Develop menu in menu bar , and then exit out of Preferences.

From Safari's menu bar, select Develop > Empty Caches .

Disable or Uninstall Extensions

Safari extensions are like mini-apps that add functionality to the browser. If you're trying to reset Safari, you'll want to disable or uninstall any extensions.

Select the Extensions tab.

Select an extension, and then deselect the checkbox next to the extension to disable it.

Many extensions have several sub-extensions, so you'll need to uncheck all of them.

After you've disabled an extension, you can uninstall it. Select Uninstall .

You'll see a message that the extension is part of an application, and that you'll need to remove the application. Select Show in Finder .

Finder will open with the app selected. Right-click on the application and select Move to Trash .

Enter your password and select OK . You've deleted the extension.

Clear Website Data on Safari for iOS

To clear Safari's settings on an iPhone or iPad:

Open the iOS device's Settings app.

Scroll down and select Safari .

Under Privacy & Security , select Clear History and Website Data .

Select Clear History and Data to confirm.

How to quickly open a settings page using shortcuts on iphone and ipad.

Find it tedious to open a particular page in the Settings app that you visit often? Here's how you can turn a Settings page into a home screen shortcut using the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and iPad.

It's always been tedious to open a specific page of the Settings app on the iPhone and iPad. It doesn't help that the search feature isn't particularly fast. Here's how you can quickly open a Settings page using Shortcuts on your iPhone and iPad.

MacStories has compiled a list of more than 120 hidden URLs that correspond to a particular page in the Settings app. You can use the Shortcuts app's Open URLs action to quickly open a Settings page.

Once you create a shortcut, add it to your home screen and then tap it to open the Settings page. This way, for example, you can directly open the Screen Time section without fussing around in the Settings app.

For the uninitiated, Shortcuts is Apple's own automation app for iPhone and iPad that comes built-in on devices running iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 (and higher). You can use it to create simple or complex automations that can be triggered using Home screen shortcuts or Siri.

Related: What Are iPhone Shortcuts and How Do I Use Them?

In this example, we'll be creating a home screen shortcut for launching the Screen Time Settings page. You can use this process to create a shortcut for any Settings page.

First, open the list of Settings URLs on your iPhone or iPad. Browse through the list, and when you find the "Screen Time" section, copy the URL portion.

Now, open the Shortcuts app and go to the "My Shortcuts" tab. Here, tap the "Create Shortcut" button at the bottom of the list.

Tap the "Add Action" button.

From here, search for the "URL" action and then select it.

In the URL action, tap the text box and paste in the copied URL. Then tap the Plus (+) button.

From the actions list, search for and add the "Open URLs" action.

Your shortcut is now ready. Tap "Next."

Here, give the shortcut a name. Select the icon next to the name to customize it.

Here, you can select a glyph and change the background color of the icon.

Choose the "Done" button from the icon menu once you're done customizing the shortcut's look.

Your shortcut is now active. Let's add it to the home screen.

From the shortcuts details page, tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner.

Here, tap the "Add to Home Screen" button.

Shortcuts app will show you a little preview. Once you're satisfied with it, tap the "Add" button.

You'll now find the shortcut added to your device's home screen. Select it to instantly open the specific Settings page on your iPhone or iPad. Repeat the process for all of your frequently used Settings pages.

When it comes to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth network switching, iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 finally make things easier. You can now switch networks right from Control Center.

5 Safari settings on your iPhone that you should change immediately

Privacy-conscious internet users might be doing whatever they can to reduce the amount of data tech companies collect about them. Complete user-tracking prevention is impossible, given the plethora of devices, websites, apps, and services we use online every day. But you can take steps to reduce the data you offer websites. With that in mind, iPhone users should ensure they enable certain Safari settings that can help improve privacy and reduce tracking.

The following tips apply to using Safari on iPhone, but the same settings are available on the iPad version of the browser. Similarly, the macOS variant of Safari will include similar privacy precautions.

Change the default Safari search engine on iPhone

Since Google is one of the main tech companies tracking you online, one way to avoid Google is to stay away from its main product. That’s Google Search, which happens to be the default search engine in Safari on the iPhone. That’s where your Safari privacy quest should start. You should change Google Search for something more privacy friendly, like DuckDuckGo .

iPhone Safari: The search engine options.

Tell sites to stop tracking your iPhone

It’s not enough to change search engines in Safari. You should also ask websites not to track your iPhone. To do that, head to the Settings app and look for the Safari menu. You’ll want to enable the Prevent Cross-Site Tracking option.

iPhone Safari settings for disabling cookies, hiding the IP address, and clearing history data.

Block cookies in Safari

While in the menu above, you might also want to enable the Block All Cookies option. That’s how advertising firms keep track of users. Blocking cookies might impact some site functionality, however.

Finally, the menu above also lets you block the Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement if you want further peace of mind.

Hide your IP address

Your quest to improve privacy while browsing the web with Safari on iPhone isn’t done. There are a few key settings that you can still tweak. Like hiding your IP address.

Block location access

Location. Location. Location. That’s a critical privacy aspect when it comes to your iPhone experience. That includes apps and internet browsing via Safari.

Safari can block websites from accessing Camera, Microphone, and Location data.

You can set it to Deny if you don’t need location-related internet services. The Ask option will force websites to ask whenever they want to track your location. You might have certain favorites that you want to allow to track your location.

Bonus: Browse the web on iPhone in Safari’s private mode

You can use a combination of the features above, or all of them, to improve your internet privacy on iPhone. You can also enable the Share Across Devices option if you own multiple Apple devices, so the same settings apply to various iPhones and iPads.

This isn’t a setting, so you’ll have to open the Safari app. Look for the tabs symbol in the lower right corner and tap it.

iPhone Safari: Browsing the web in Private mode.

The downside is that the sites you browse in private mode won’t remain in your history. You’ll have to balance between Private mode and regular mode depending on which websites you use.

If it’s dark, you’re in Private mode.

Fix: iPhone Lagging and Freezing After iOS 17.5 Update

Darryl Dsouza

iOS updates bring in new features, enhance the security of the iPhone, and also optimize it to perform better. Sadly, multiple users have reported that ever since they updated to iOS 17.5, their iPhones have been lagging. Moreover, there are constant frame drops while scrolling, keyboard freezing when typing and even the browsing experience on Safari has deteriorated. If you’re facing similar problems, here are ten fixes to try.

How To Fix iPhone Lagging and Freezing After iOS 17.5 Update

1. change keyboard settings.

With iOS 17, Apple updated the Auto-Correction feature with a transformer language model which also improves the Predictive Text feature. The keyboard has inline predictive text recommendations too. While this is a step in the right direction, it consumes a huge chunk of resources, especially if you have an older iPhone.

Therefore, we suggest disabling the Auto-Correction and Predictive Text feature on your iPhone as it might help fix your iPhone lagging. Especially because other users have reported that doing so helps resolve the issue.

Time needed:  2 minutes

Steps to disable Auto-Correction and Predictive Text in Keyboard settings.

Disable Autocorrect and Predictive Text in Keyboard Settings

2. Remove Dictionary and Add It Back

The Dictionary feature helps you “Look Up” the meaning of words on your iPhone. You can add dictionaries of several different languages. But for some reason, these dictionaries might be the reason your iPhone is lagging.

Yes, it does not make a lot of sense, but a user on the Apple Discussion Community has reported that removing all the dictionaries and then adding back only the ones you use helps fix iPhone lagging issues. Therefore, we suggest you do the same.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and head to General .
  • Tap the Dictionary option.

ios safari settings

  • Restart your iPhone. If you’re unaware of the steps to do so, ask Siri to restart your iPhone .
  • After your iPhone restarts, head back to Settings > General > Dictionary .

Add Dictionary to iPhone

3. Disable Siri Contact Suggestions

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and head to the Contacts option.
  • Tap the Siri & Search option.
  • On the next screen, disable the Learn from this App toggle.
  • Disable the Show Contact Suggestions toggle too.

4. Clear Safari History and Data

If Safari is lagging, freezing, or crashing on your iPhone running on iOS 17.5, the first thing you must do is to clear Safari’s History and Website Data.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and navigate to Safari .
  • Scroll down and tap the Clear History and Website Data button.
  • Select the All History option from the Clear Timeframe menu.
  • You can also enable the Close All Tabs toggle. It won’t delete any tabs that are in a Tab Group.
  • Finally, tap the Clear History button.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap the Advanced button.
  • Tap the Website Data button.
  • On the Website Data page, tap the Remove All Website Data button.
  • Tap the Remove Now button to confirm your selection.

If the aforementioned steps don’t fix the freezing issues on your iPhone, please refer to our detailed guide on how to fix Safari Freezing on your iPhone .

5. Clear Background Apps

Apps running in the background can also be the reason why your iPhone is lagging. Please clear all the background apps and it might free up the RAM and fix lagging issues.

  • For iPhone with Face ID: Swipe up and hold on to the Home Screen .  For iPhone with Touch ID: Double tap the Home Button .
  • Swipe up on all the app s in the Recent Apps tray.

ios safari settings

6. Force Restart iPhone

Temporary bugs and glitches in the software, apps, or services can also cause the iPhone to lag. Force restarting your iPhone can help get rid of these bugs and fix the lagging issues.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone (iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd Gen and above)

  • Press and release the volume up button .
  • Press and release the volume down button .
  • Next, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • As soon as you see the Apple logo, release the Side button . Please do not release the Side button before the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone to Fix iPhone Lagging After iOS 17 Update

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus

Press and hold the Volume down and Side buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 6s or below

Press and hold the Side and Home buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears.

7. Update All Apps

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone.
  • Tap on your Profile at the top right corner.
  • Scroll down to the Available Updates section and tap the Update All button.

Update All Apps on iPhone

8. Check Storage Space

Most of us are aware that iPhones tend to lag when running extremely low on storage space. If you haven’t already, please check the free storage space on your iPhone. If it is low, we suggest uninstalling apps or unused media files to free up storage space as it might help fix the lag or stutters on your iPhone.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and head to the General option.

Head to iPhone Storage

  • The next screen will display the amount of occupied and total storage space on your iPhone. You can delete apps that you don’t use often to free up storage space on your iPhone.
  • Tap on any app you want to delete.

Manage iPhone Storage

Also, in case your iPhone displays a “Recommendations” option, tap on it and follow the recommended actions to free up storage space. The quickest way to empty storage space is to use a maintenance tool. One of the most popular apps is the Intego Washing Machine because it fully declutters your iPhone and increases its health significantly.

9. Factory Reset iPhone

If none of the aforementioned methods help resolve the issue, the last option you’re left with is to factory reset your iPhone. Please refer to our guide on How to Factory Reset Your iPhone for detailed instructions.

We hope this guide helps fix your iPhone lagging after the iOS 17.5 update. If you have any doubts, please let us know in the comments below.

Hello everyone, I am quite new to PC building and I would like to tinker with my mobo bios settings. However I've been overwhelmed with the amount of settings in the bios menu especially the OC section. Are there any official documents from MSI that explain what each setting does? Thanks I forgot to mention I have an MSI MPG z690 gaming edge wifi ddr4 motherboard.

Check your MB documentation support page for the MB user manual. There is a MSI BIOS user guide link in the MB user manual. It is in the BIOS set-up section. Hope this helps.

The explanations right in the BIOS, when you select a setting, are the best you're gonna get from MSI, and they are pretty lackluster. As well as the manual, but it's barely a proper explanation, more like generic and vague descriptions. Usually you don't have to change all too much though. But it also depends on your CPU. The high-end 13th gen and 14th gen i9 models, and even the 14th gen i7, have outrageously high power draw if left running unrestricted (which happens when you select "Water Cooler" in the cooler selection prompt that appears once when you enter the BIOS for the very first time). And even with the "Tower Cooler" selection, the power limits are high enough to cause overheating problems with a lot of coolers. This particular issue, which actually allowed the i9 CPUs to be unstable in some circumstances, is slowly being taken care of to an extent, as you can read here , but it's still not really satisfactory. I highlight this issue in particular because it tends to cause the most problems for people. Under full load, with an i7 or i9, despite using a good cooler, the temperatures can get out of hand, approaching 100°C upon which there will be so-called thermal throttling (downclocking at lower voltage to bring down the temperature and save the CPU). So you can set power limits according to your cooling capabilities, meaning that the cooling is protected and that the temperatures are under control under all circumstances. I then see optimizing "CPU Lite Load" as a great method of lowering power consumption by bringing the voltage to a more sane level according to the specific CPU. Both steps are explained here for example. Check this post and this post for some additional settings that i like to do. If you follow the links, you can see that already for one single setting like "CPU Lite Load", i could write pages and pages of explanations. Here's another example for LLC, Load Line Calibration . Now, i promise, i don't post this to get your head spinning even more. These are just examples that there can't really be too simple explanations of things here anymore, because you are looking "under the hood", so to speak. Just when you open the bonnet/hood of a car, explaining everything to a person that doesn't already know a lot about the basic functions of everything, it's not easy to do. So a one-liner explanation for everything, that would only target professionals. In reality, some of the settings would require more elaborate explanations. But as i said, mostly they are on defaults that work well, with a choice few exceptions. So most of the settings in OC, you don't really have to touch, unless you want to change something about the way the CPU and RAM operate. Well, for the RAM, you should enable XMP so it runs at the proper speed. Then there's some settings you change when there are problems, like the XMP profile not wanting to work. Then you can ask here and i could tell you what to try. To explain all the settings thoroughly, it would be a monumental task. I try to explain specific settings as best i can whenever asked, and i am by no means the authority on how everything works, i only accumulated a bit of knowledge about them. But you won't find everything in one place. P.S. Maybe you like my Guide: How to set up a fan curve in the BIOS , where at least everything regarding that section is bundled in one place. Oh, one last thing, since your board uses an ASMedia chipset for two extra SATA ports, that chipset should be disabled in the BIOS, because it tends to cause trouble, see here .
