The Family Staterooms can accommodate up to five people, while the Single Staterooms are perfect for the solo traveler. However, the ship also has several other stateroom categories, ranging from modest insides to the grand Pinnacle Suite.

Do all inside staterooms accommodate 3 people?

Do you have staterooms for a family of 3? Or can a cot be added to a double occupancy stateroom? Or do you have a double occupancy stateroom with a sofa that one person can sleep on? It seems that there would be a more economical way of accommodating 3 persons other than 2 staterooms, the extra stateroom costing the exorbitant single stateroom rate.

It would really be more exciting and interesting if there were videos & interactive forums to introduce/publicise your products….after all its all about visuals ! The ships , travellers, places, food and drinks, entertainment…unbeatable!

Looking forward to finding a solo stateroom available for a date I can use for my vacation. So far no luck. I’ll keep trying. Cannot wait to sail the Konigsdam. My daughter and new son-inlaw will be sailing in July to Norway. So excited to hear all about their experiences.

Thank you to make singles to be respected again. Cabins for us. I will come back soon.

It’s enthralling to know that in 1966 I had a job as page-boy and as pantryboy at the old SS Statendam and during the same summer at the old SS Ryndam of the HAL. At that time it was easy to get a job as a working-student. This summer I’m looking forward for our cruise at the brand-new MS Koningsdam to Norway, the 17th july! Fifty years ago working and this summer enjoying! Many greetings, Boudewijn Berenschot. VT2DDT cabin 8024

Magnificent.

Holland America’s New Koningsdam Solo Staterooms are Here!

Koningsdam solo oceanview stateroom

Holland America Koningsdam solo staterooms really measure up.

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

It’s not rocket science. It’s all about revenue. That’s the reason the cruise lines have dragged their heels for so long about solo staterooms. Holland America has always known that solo travelers existed and aside from the usual 150-200% single supplement, Holland America is the only cruise line that still offers a Solo Share Program with same-sex passengers.

But what if you want your own space? The Koningsdam solo staterooms fit the bill. The Koningsdam, which launched last month, is the first ship in Holland America’s innovative Pinnacle Class and the first to offer purpose-built solo staterooms.

Located forward on the Main Deck, the 12 single ocean-view stateroom range in size from 127 to 172 square feet. The difference in square footage depends on the location of the stateroom; there are six on each side of the ship towards the bow. The first solo staterooms are smaller and they increase in size the further back you go.

Koningsdam solo staterooms

All of the solo and traditional double occupancy staterooms feature Holland America Line’s signature Mariner’s Dream bed, bathrobes to use during the voyage, a modern shower head, flat-panel TV with video-on-demand, mini fridge, complimentary fresh fruit on request and bath amenities from Elemis Aroma pure . Also included are ice service, shoeshine service and nightly turndown service. All the staterooms are equipped with bedside USB ports, too.

As can be the case with other cruise lines selling solo staterooms, sometimes solos staterooms are priced higher than a lower category double occupancy stateroom, even with a 150-200% single supplement. A price-check today revealed that this is not the case aboard the Koningsdam. Their solo stateroom compared with a similar double occupancy ocean-view stateroom, was nearly $500 less that the double occupancy room.

Thank you for your question…I’m sure it will be helpful to others, too. Holland America, and other cruise lines as well, have accessible staterooms. If the ship only has a bathtub with shower (as with many of Holland America’s older ships) then you could ask for an accessible stateroom. These will have a walk-in shower with at least two grab bars.

As for solo staterooms, many times you can book a double occupancy room for the same price as an actual solo stateroom. Solo staterooms are sort of a novelty item. While you don’t pay the single supplement, you will probably pay more for something unique. Koningsdam has beautiful solo staterooms, but I’m not certain if any of them have a walk-in shower.

Thank you again for reading my Koningsdam article. I hope you are able to find the best stateroom for your needs. Have a wonderful cruise!

Hi, I am a Holland America Mariner. I have recently separated. So, I do wish to begin cruising again. Obviously in a single room, other issue for me is, that I need an ambulant type of room. I cannot shower over a bath, so I need grab rails at least in the bathroom. So, can that be accommodated on a Holland America ship? Sorry about the drama. Helen Mildenhall

  • Itinerary-themed specialty teas and snacks – Afternoon Tea service offers a unique cultural experience featuring locally sourced fresh teas complimented by traditional for the region sweets and savories. Creamy milkshakes are also served.
  • Traditional Dutch pea soup (with pork) is served outdoors – only on cold-weather cruise itineraries. The steamy mugs of soup are served on the pool deck while the ship sails in regions such as Alaska or Norway’s Fjords.
  • All HAL ships have a Catholic priest and offer daily non-denominational services.
  • “BB King’s Blues Club” (see on Plaza Deck 2) offers live 8-man band music performances in the evenings (3 shows per night). This themed nightclub experience is also available on the HAL ships Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam.
  • “New York Times” paper’s digital edition is available for free via the HAL’s partnership with the news media. The digital edition is available at the Explorations Cafe’s computers.
  • Signature recipes by celebrity chefs – many of the MDR’s (main dining room) dishes are by the line’s “Culinary Council” consisting of 6 chefs. Among the international chefs presenting their own signature dishes on the Holland America ships (and often present onboard) are Jacques Torres (aka “Mr Chocolate”, pastry chef), Jonnie Boer (Michelin star chef, co-owner of De Librije restaurant in Holland), David Burke (“Iron Chef America” show), also the HAL’s master chef Rudolf “Rudi” Sodamin.

Holland America Koningsdam’s shipboard programming (enrichment, entertainment and children) is based on “BBC Earth” content.

  • The ship’s theatre hosts daily expert lectures, presentations, a nature-themed game show with BBC Earth screenings and introductions by the crews that filmed these series. A signature concert in the evenings is based on the “Frozen Planet” program (polar regions-themed) – a spectacular multimedia show with live musicians.
  • The ship’s children club facilities feature an explorer trail, workshops (including on journalism and filming), fact shows (animals, dinosaurs).
  • HAL's themed cruises feature access to the BBC Earth series creators, sharing behind-the-scenes media and stories. Children have the opportunity to participate in filming workshops.

(new) Room Service Menu

Since December 2016, Holland America Koningsdam ship offers a new room service menu that includes a mix of Continental (free) and a la carte breakfast items, as well as sample dishes from the onboard specialty restaurants (Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Dive-In Burgers).

  • Complimentary starters, entrees, sandwiches and desserts are offered around the clock.
  • Pinnacle and Neptune Suite passengers enjoy the a la carte breakfast and specialty beverages free of charge.
  • The Tamarind menu offers Seafood, Vegetarian, and Land & Sea bento boxes - each at USD 9,75.
  • The Dive-In menu offers various burgers served with fries. Each costs USD 4,95.
  • The Pinnacle Grill menu offers a steak dish at USD 15 and lobster at USD 20.
  • At breakfast, sample complimentary room service option is a scrambled egg dish. It comes with hash browns and breakfast meats. Other offered dishes are steak and eggs (USD 9,50), smoked salmon benedict (USD 7,50) and fruit smoothie with Greek yogurt (USD 4,95).

A separate kids menu offers (free of charge) chicken tenders, mac & cheese, peanut butter and jelly, as well as other snacks.

I prefer aft (straight up to the aft view pool and straight down to the main dining room) and the Beethoven deck because the balconies are deeper and I find them more comfortable to stretch out on.

I'm sure most people in this group have seen my video before,  😁  but this was our room on the Koningsdam in 2019.  We were in room 4191, Beethoven deck, in one of the aft extended balconies.  the fore of the ship has extended balconies well, but the first 9 rooms have a steel balcony....i.e., not glass below the railing edge

However,  fore or aft may not be for you:  Neither my DH or myself are prone to seasickness, and we were lucky, with very little motion...It was a calm Caribbean cruise.

I would do one of these rooms again in a heartbeat.

We’ve usually been on Schubert or Mozart.  .

We were just in 7040 aft and I really enjoyed the location.  Only two flights up to go to the Lido, there were cabins above and below us and very near the aft elevator which doesn't seem as busy as the center ones.

We just got off the K-dam this morning.  Had Aft 4213.  Loved it.

That’s so weird.  I vacated that room when you got on.  I found the vibration was very bad the first night in that room.  After that it was ok.  I have had rooms over the wake before.  Usually not that much vibration. This is a vista balcony not a regular balcony room and I didn’t think it was worth the extra over a regular balcony.  I moved from 4171 due to getting this as a reasonable upsell.  I actually preferred 4171.

We have two cruises in 2022 aboard the  Rotterdam,  sister ship to the  Koningsdam  VC Verandahs on Deck 6, Mozart Deck. One is a 7-day to the Caribbean and the other is the 15-day WB Transatlantic in October. These will be the first time in a Verandah aboard the Pinnacle Class. We have spent twenty days in a Gershwin Deck Vista Suite aboard the Nieuw Statendam  in 2019 and in two weeks we will be in a Mozart Deck Vista Suite on the  Koningsdam. There is not much difference between the Verandah and Vista to recommend the Vista other than the midship location but we got great prices for both Vistas.

With regards to choice, we have VC 6162 for one and VC 6181 for the other cruise, both which are just after the two sets of connecting rooms by the elevators. The Pinnacles stow the lifeboats a bit further out so we like to be in the middle bump out or the aft sides by the elevators. Deck 7, Schubert Deck has more connecting rooms than Deck 6.

Wow.  Crazy.  Yes!  The vibration was very bad the first night...then everything was fine after that.  I don't remember what the difference was from a standard veranda, but we wanted to try an Aft location and wasn't disappointed.  We definitely spent more time on the balcony than previous cruises.  We are on the same deck, midship, starboard in January for our Hawaii cruise.

A Guide to All 11 Holland American Cruise Ships

Here's what you should know before booking your Holland America cruise.

When you cruise with Holland America Line (HAL), a World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree , you can expect incredible food, exciting destinations (over 300 ports of call across all seven continents), and luxe service. This Travel + Leisure reader-favorite cruise line provides a luxury cruise ship experience without the luxury price tag.

Based on my Holland America experience, I can confirm that the service is top-notch. I sailed on the Eurodam , and the main dining room servers always greeted my sister and me by name. Being treated like a friend, not just another passenger, is a luxury, especially on such a large ship. (Each vessel accommodates between 1,432 and 2,668 passengers.) HAL “prides itself on its beautifully appointed ships and gracious services where all of its guests can expect to enjoy touches of luxury throughout the journey," Holland America Line specialist and Marvelous Mouse Travels travel advisor Charlene Recio says.

Other features include the cruise line's partnership with the Professional Pickleball Association — which outfits every ship with courts and complimentary lessons — and sophisticated dining options like the new Global Fresh Fish Program , which allows you to enjoy over 80 varieties of fresh, locally sourced regional seafood specialties, depending on your location. Think yellowtail snapper while cruising the Caribbean, sardines in the Mediterranean, and halibut in Alaska.

Though all 11 ships have things in common, it's essential to understand their nuances when choosing the right cruise for you. “The Pinnacle Class ships offer more dining options and entertainment, but the smaller-sized ships, such as those that are part of the R or Vista classes, allow easier access to more unique destinations,” Recio explains. Here, learn about each Holland America ship, including essential amenities and capacities, and make booking your next sailing a breeze.

Inaugural Year : 2021

Ship Class : Pinnacle

Capacity : 2,668 passengers

Holland America’s newest ship, Rotterdam , is extremely impressive. Expect incredible entertainment, contemporary staterooms and suites, swanky public spaces, and over 20 drinking and dining options. Post-dinner, you can check out the casino, catch an outdoor movie screening by the pool, or take in a performance in the dazzling World Stage theater. For live music, the "Music Walk" area offers several options, from pop hits at Billboard Onboard to soul at B.B. King's Blues Club.

Nieuw Statendam

Inaugural Year : 2018

Capacity : 2,666 passengers

Nieuw Statendam offers a traditional cruising experience (formal nights, afternoon tea) with contemporary flair. Music is a big theme on the ship — its unique design draws inspiration from musical instruments, and there's a music-themed art collection on board. Additional highlights include an expanded Music Walk area, the two-level World Stage theater, and top-notch specialty dining options, including Tamarind for Southeast Asian and Rudi’s Sel De Mer for haute French-inspired cuisine.

Inaugural Year : 2016

Capacity : 2,650 passengers

Thanks to its clean lines, modern decor, and natural light-filled spaces, Koningsdam has a brighter, airier aesthetic than Holland America's other vessels. It was the first ship in the line’s Pinnacle Class and is home to live music venues, outdoor movie screenings by the pool, pickleball courts, and a lively casino. For some well-deserved R&R, head to the spa or the adults-only Retreat area.

Nieuw Amsterdam

Inaugural Year : 2010

Ship Class : Signature

Capacity : 2,106 passengers

As you might be able to guess by its name, this sophisticated ship pays homage to New York City. Design elements hammer the theme home: There's a crystal chandelier shaped like the skyline, tons of photos and paintings with motifs of "The City That Never Sleeps," and a full-size yellow cab in the kids club.

Stroll along the wraparound promenade, listen to live music at Billboard Onboard, and rent a plush cabana at the swanky adults-only Retreat. Be sure to indulge in the ship's dining options, too — this is the only Holland America Line vessel with a permanent Morimoto by Sea restaurant. Iron Chef alumnus Chef Masaharu Morimoto, who was named the line's Fresh Fish Ambassador when the Global Fresh Fish Program launched, designed Morimoto by Sea pop-up experiences on several HAL ships, but his pièce de résistance is the full-time, standalone Morimoto eatery exclusive to Nieuw Amsterdam.

Inaugural Year : 2008

Capacity : 2,104 passengers

The first vessel in Holland America’s Signature Class, Eurodam exudes elegance in every sense, sans any stuffiness. I cruised to Alaska on this ship in August 2022 and was especially blown away by the live music at Music Walk.

I also relaxed on a thermal lounger at the spa, tucked into crispy fish and chips (made with Alaskan halibut, of course), lounged by the Lido Pool — the retractable roof here comes in handy in inclement weather — sipped iced lattes and hot cocoa, and kept an eye out for whales in the Explorer’s Lounge.

Inaugural Year : 2006

Ship Class : Vista

Capacity : 1,924 passengers

Noordam boasts a gallery-worthy art collection and elegant staterooms. There are ample public spaces and activities, but don’t expect over-the-top entertainment. Instead, you can play pickleball, sing along to live tunes in one of the Music Walk venues, cozy up with a good book in the library, relax at the spa, or take a dip in one of the pools.

Inaugural Year : 2004

Capacity : 1,916 passengers

Westerdam celebrated its 20th birthday this year, but it feels as contemporary as any of the other vessels, thanks to the addition of music venues such as Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone Lounge. It also hosts activities like wine tasting and bingo. If you're a fitness lover, check out the sports court to perfect your pickleball game with a free lesson.

Inaugural Year : 2003

Capacity : 1,964 passengers

Oosterdam — the second Vista Class ship in the fleet — is among the line’s most family-friendly vessels. Although all HAL ships have complimentary kids clubs for children ages three to 17, only a few ( Oosterdam included) offer High Score!, a game room where children and adults can play games like skeeball.

While the little ones play, grown-ups can enjoy a massage at the spa or cocktails at a stylish bar or lounge like Ocean Bar. Regroup for dinner before heading out to Billboard Onboard or Rolling Stone Lounge on a date night or trying your luck at the casino.

Inaugural Year : 2002

The 22-year-old Zuiderdam is a Holland America fan favorite for its classic nautical design elements, modern bells and whistles, and numerous dining options, including the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and Dive In, a casual poolside eatery serving Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and fries.

The public spaces are equally impressive, including the posh cabana-lined Retreat (exclusively reserved for adults) and the buzzy Rolling Stone Lounge. The ship is also the 2025 home of Holland America’s annual Grand World Voyage , a world cruise that sails to six continents over an eye-popping 124 days.

Inaugural Year : 2000

Ship Class : R Class

Capacity : 1,432 passengers

Along with its near-identical sister ship the Volendam, Zaandam represents the small end of HAL's fleet. The vessel — designed to carry a line-minimum 1,432 passengers while offering plenty of room to roam — is ideal for a more personal and intimate cruising experience. The ship’s musical-inspired decor includes signed guitars from Queen, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton.

Inaugural Year : 1999

Volendam is the line’s oldest operating ship, dating back 25 years. Despite its age, this small vessel delights with its elaborate public spaces, which feature elegant garden-inspired touches like fresh blooms, floral fabrics, and tapestries. Volendam is one of just two Holland America ships without a Music Walk, so expect a quieter, more low-key onboard atmosphere.

5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade

Erica Silverstein

Turn down a cruise cabin upgrade? You might think it sounds ridiculous — and you're right. If a cruise offers me a free suite, I'm certainly not going to say no.

The sad truth is free upgrades are rare. The days of surprise upgrades from your cozy inside cabin to a spacious balcony room are mostly over.

Nowadays, cruise lines expect you to pay for your cruise ship cabin upgrades. Free upgrades , when offered, are hardly ever as good as they sound and are typically from one room to another within the same cabin category.

If you're going to pay good money for an upgrade, be positive your new digs are much better than the original room you picked. If they're not, tell the cruise line they do not have a deal. Here are five reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade.

You can't pick your cabin location

koningsdam cruise ship rooms

An upgrade is essentially the same as booking a guarantee cabin — a type of room where your cabin category is guaranteed, but your specific room location is not. You agree to let the cruise line pick your cabin in exchange for giving you a discount on that room. You give up the right to control where on the ship your cabin is located.

If you're prone to seasickness and prefer a midship cabin on a lower deck, you might not want an upgrade that could land you at the very front or back of the ship where it's rockier.

If you're sensitive to noise and specifically chose a room far away from the elevators and the noisy Lido Deck, you will want to say no to a cabin upgrade that can't guarantee a quiet locale.

Travel groups that purposefully booked rooms near each other should not accept upgrades that would split them among different decks.

RELATED: 8 cabin locations you should definitely avoid

When that cruise ship cabin upgrade offer arrives, think about how strongly you feel about where your cabin is located. If location is important, you will want to turn down the upgrade offer.

It's too expensive

koningsdam cruise ship rooms

Not all cruise cabin upgrades are free. Typically, the cruise line will offer the upgrade at a discount, meaning you'll pay less for the upgraded room than it would cost to book it outright, but more than what you paid for your original cabin.

No matter how good a deal that seems, if money is tight, don't take the upgrade. Save your vacation budget for tours and shoreside fun or onboard treats like date-night restaurants and fun cocktails.

After all, you'll get a bed and bathroom no matter which cabin you choose, but you won't have as much fun if you have no budget left to spend once you're on board.

You booked a specific cabin type

koningsdam cruise ship rooms

Some travelers need specific cabins. Cruisers who use a wheelchair or have mobility difficulties purposefully book accessible cabins with roll-in showers and wider doorways. Families book connecting cabins or designated family-friendly rooms with an extra bathroom or that can sleep five or six. Wellness enthusiasts book spa cabins for their Zen-like decor and thermal suite perks.

If you have booked a specific type of cabin for a reason, do not accept an upgrade offer. Usually, the cruise line cannot guarantee they will upgrade you from one accessible or spa cabin to a nicer one. In addition, upgrade offers apply to a single cabin, not a pair of connecting rooms.

You might not get all the perks

koningsdam cruise ship rooms

Complimentary perks are a popular booking incentive used by several cruise lines. Depending on the type of cabin you book, you're rewarded with onboard credit or your choice of several freebies, such as an included drink package or shore excursion credit.

When you accept an upgrade offer, you won't receive the booking perks associated with the higher-category room (though you will receive any room-based perks, like concierge access or priority debarkation). Worse, you could actually lose the perks you already have.

RELATED: The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any cruise ship

How? If you booked a cruise and then notice that prices have fallen, you can give yourself an upgrade by rebooking a nicer cabin at a lower price. In doing so, you will often lose your previous booking perks and be eligible only for the current promotion.

For example, if you booked a promotion offering free Wi-Fi and a $100 onboard credit, but the current offer focuses on low prices and a $50 onboard credit, you might lose the internet package and half the onboard credit when you rebook to upgrade your cabin.

Decide whether the trade-off between a nicer cabin and your existing booking perks is worth it. If not, don't go for the cabin upgrade.

The upgrade isn't good enough

koningsdam cruise ship rooms

You should only say yes to a cruise cabin upgrade if it will get you a nicer cabin. However, what a cruise line deems a better cabin might not actually be worth more money in your eyes.

For example, cruise lines break down all the cabins within the same category (for example, all outside cabins) into subcategories, based on location, layout, size and perks. A midship inside cabin on an upper deck might be deemed more desirable and priced higher than an inside cabin on a lower deck at the back of the ship.

A cruise line might offer you a same-category upgrade, moving from one balcony cabin to a "better" balcony cabin, rather than to a mini-suite. If you don't care about cabin location, don't take the cabin upgrade. You'll end up paying more for a room that's essentially the same as the one you booked for less.

If the upgrade is free, or if the new cabin comes with extras you will use (such as concierge access or spa perks), consider saying yes. However, if the cost of the upgrade is not worth whatever benefits the new room has, politely decline the cruise cabin upgrade.

Bottom line

In many cases, a cruise ship cabin upgrade will get you a better cabin — roomier accommodations, a better ship location, and maybe extra perks. However, not all upgrade offers are desirable, especially if what you value in a cabin type and location is not what the cruise line will give you. Don't hesitate to say no to an upgrade if the offer does not represent good value for your money.

Thinking About a Solo Cruise? Here’s What to Know.

As solo cruising becomes more popular, pricing and cabin types are changing. Deals can be found, especially with advance planning, but it takes a little know-how.

An illustration depicts the deck of a ship with two couples in the foreground, and, in the center of the image, a lone woman in a straw hat and dress, sipping a drink and looking beyond the railing to the ship’s wake, which is depicted as a bright river reflecting the setting sun and surrounded by the blue sea. A lone gull follows the ship.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

When cruising resumed after Covid-era travel restrictions were lifted, cruise lines wanted to fill ships fast. Some, like Windstar Cruises , which operates small ships carrying 148 to 342 passengers, pursued solo travelers with discounts on the penalties singles usually pay to occupy a cabin alone.

“To fill a lot of capacity in a short time, who do you go after? Those who don’t have to ask permission or arrange schedules for two,” said Janet Bava, the chief commercial officer for Windstar, which reduced its single occupancy fares to 120 percent of the standard fare a person sharing a double cabin would pay. Previously those solo cruisers were paying up to double the fare to have a cabin to themselves.

But the cruise industry has since recovered — Carnival Corporation recently announced 2025 bookings are pacing higher than 2024 in both price and occupancy — and many solo deals are disappearing. Windstar, for one, is snapping back to 2019 prepandemic pricing models.

“Now there’s less space,” said Ms. Bava, noting that the goal of every cruise line is “to maximize revenue at double occupancy at 100 percent.”

Still, even with increasing prices, travel advisers at the Virtuoso network say solo cruising is one of the top cruise trends for 2025. Solo travel in general has been on the upswing in the past few years. In a survey on 2024 travel intentions, Booking.com found that 59 percent of respondents planned to travel alone.

Savvy cruisers know that deals always exist in the dynamic world of cruise pricing for those who book early and otherwise game its unique economics. Here’s what you need to know about going solo affordably.

Why it costs more to go solo

Unlike hotels, where the price of a room is generally the same whether there is one person or two people staying in it, cruise lines advertise their lowest rates as per person prices in cabins built for two, which can be misleading to first-time cruisers.

Cruise lines don’t want to sell cabins at half price or miss out on the extra shipboard charges for things like drinks and excursions that a companion might buy, so they try to recover that income by charging a single supplement, which can run 25 to 100 percent above the per person double occupancy rate. That means, for example, a cruise that costs $1,000 a person in a double cabin could cost a single passenger $1,250 to $2,000 to have the cabin to themselves.

“We saw a change after the pandemic,” said Shelby Frenette, who runs the agency TravelFun.Biz , based in Boca Raton, Fla., which specializes in group solo travel. To get travelers back on ships, she said, “cruise lines were waiving the single supplements in a big way.”

Now, she said, prices are again rising as interest in cruising grows. Passenger volume in 2023 was 31.7 million, according to the Cruise Lines International Association , exceeding 2019 levels by seven percent.

“It’s so busy, we are back to pre-Covid times when there’s a lot less opportunity for singles to save money,” Ms. Frenette said.

In managing occupancy, cruise lines use single supplements like “a lever that can be pulled depending on their needs,” said Theresa Scalzitti, the chief operations officer of CruisePlanners , a travel agency based in Coral Springs, Fla.

That’s why travelers might see more sales on shoulder- or off-season sailings across the cruise spectrum. But, Ms. Scalzitti added, “Business has been so good I don’t think a lot have had to use this.”

The rise of the solo cabin

One solution to the solo supplement rub is to offer staterooms designed for one passenger. Norwegian Cruise Line became the first major cruise company to adopt solo cabins with the debut of the Norwegian Epic in 2010.

It now has nearly 1,000 solo staterooms — ranging from inside cabins to those with balconies — across its 19 ships, most of which include access to private lounges for passengers in solo cabins. A solo cabin on a weeklong sailing in Alaska in October aboard the Norwegian Encore was recently priced at $1,200, compared to $1,749 a person in a double occupancy room.

Other companies followed its lead. Holland America Line added solo cabins on its Pinnacle-class ships that debuted in 2016. Demand for single accommodations on the three ships — the Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam — is high, according to the company. A seven-day sailing in November between San Diego and Mexico’s Baja Peninsula was recently priced at $1,948 in a single cabin compared to $2,268 a person in a double.

But solo cabins can be elusive — according to Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic , they are often the first to sell out — and they aren’t necessarily cheap.

“A lot of solo cabins are on newer or larger ships, which tend to have higher pricing,” said Cheryl Cooper, who is based near Atlanta and vlogs as SIG Cruiser about solo cruising, among other topics.

On some ships, they are a premium offering. American Cruise Lines , which operates on waterways in the United States, offers single staterooms on each of its ships, many at 250 square feet with private balconies. A nine-day trip next May on the Columbia and Snake Rivers was recently priced at $7,620 for a private balcony solo stateroom; doubles started at $5,715 a person.

“When people see ‘no single supplement,’ they automatically think 75 to 50 percent off and that’s not the case,” Ms. Cooper said.

Seeking singles on river and expedition cruises

Besides Windstar, other small-ship lines, including those in river and expedition cruising — which tend to be more expensive than trips on large ships — have seen a jump in solo travelers and are pursuing them with incentives.

HX , formerly known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, says one in four bookings among American passengers are solo travelers and the line experienced more than 50 percent growth in single sailors between 2022 and 2023.

In 2024, about half of its single passengers traveled without paying a supplement while the other half received discounts of varying levels (HX is currently selling supplement-free cabins to solo travelers on 10-day sailings in the Galápagos Islands, from $8,634 through March 2026).

Aqua Expeditions , which operates small ships on the Amazon and Mekong Rivers, and in the Galápagos and Indonesia, saw its solo business grow 50 percent between 2019 and 2023. It waives the single supplement on select sailings. Three-night itineraries on the Amazon start around $3,450 a person.

Among river cruise operators, Tauck waives the single supplement on its European sailings in Category 1 cabins, which are 150 square feet and on a lower level with a pair of small windows, compared to the French balconies with floor-to-ceiling windows in other categories. (An eight-day cruise on the Danube River next summer starts at $4,990 in a single, the same price as a person sharing a double room)

In Europe, Riviera River Cruises is offering 40 sailings in 2024 and 2025 — about six percent of departures — without single supplements across all cabins (six-day sailings on the Danube start at $2,099 in a solo cabin). On other itineraries, Riviera offers four to five cabins on each sailing with a 25 percent single supplement; the fee goes to 100 percent once those are sold out.

How to get the best solo fare

Most cruise experts suggest making reservations early for the best price and cabin availability on ships. Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on a few cabins on most European sailings; booking early gives you the best chance of getting one.

If you book and a fare later drops, many lines will honor that lower rate.

Before the final payment is due, “if the price goes down, get it repriced so you’re not at risk by booking early,” said Ms. Scalzitti of CruisePlanners, which monitors bookings for price drops.

The annual “ wave season ” cruise sales, which normally take place January to March, often yield deals in the form of rate cuts, amenities or discounts on companions.

Those deals are increasingly showing up earlier on the calendar.

When families gather to celebrate over the holidays, “they tend to plan travel for the following year,” said Ms. Bava of Windstar. “We expect to have amazing pre-wave offers starting in December.”

Companies that specialize in solo travel may offer roommate matching, allowing a pair of strangers to split the cost of a double cabin. Aurora Expeditions , which operates a pair of 130-passenger ships in places like the Arctic and Antarctica, will assign solo travelers with another single of the same gender in a shared cabin if available. Ms. Frenette of TravelFun.Biz said about 80 percent of travelers with her groups take advantage of doubling up when it’s offered.

“There have been very, very few major problems,” she said. “The biggest is snoring.”
