Tour Itinerary

On our thrilling South Coast & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon tour , you will enjoy a spectacular sightseeing adventure, traveling along Iceland's stunning South Coast .

You’ll see the best of Iceland’s natural wonders, as the famous “Ring Road” cuts a path between towering mountains, gigantic glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and thundering waterfalls. Wherever you look, the views are breathtaking!

Along the way, you’ll begin to feel the elemental beauty of Iceland, built by fire and sculpted by ice. The journey will take you to some of Iceland’s greatest treasures, including the iconic waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss .

Did you know that glaciers cover more than a tenth of Iceland? You’ll see these immense rivers of ice reaching down from the mountains and volcanoes inland as we pass Skaftafell National Park on our way to the Glacier Lagoon .

Vatnajökull (the Water Glacier) is the largest glacier in Iceland, and one of its “outlet glaciers” has created a dreamlike destination for you to experience!

Immense icebergs “calve” from the glacier's edge and crash into the deepest lake in Iceland, the Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón .

The “Glacial River Lake” only emerged a few decades ago as the glacier began to retreat. Now you can stand here in amazement and watch ghostly white and pale blue icebergs float serenely around the lagoon. It’s a bucket-list location, featured in Hollywood films and TV shows!

Watch out for seals and birds, who love to perch on the icebergs before these enormous multi-colored chunks of ice head out to sea.

Nearby, you can stroll on Diamond Beach , a fantastic black sand beach famed for the huge iceberg fragments that drift ashore, sculpted into unbelievable shapes by the wind and the waves.

You’ll never forget this day trip adventure, where you’ll see the finest sights the “Land of Fire and Ice” offers!

Seljalandsfoss walk behind waterfall - south Iceland packages

Our day tour of Iceland’s South Coast includes a visit to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, often referred to as Iceland’s crown jewel. Located near the Vatnajokull National Park, around 380 km (236.12 miles) from Reykjavik, Jokulsarlon is the perfect destination for those looking to experience Iceland’s natural beauty at its finest.

As we drive towards our destination, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking scenery that the South Coast has to offer. Once we arrive at Jokulsarlon, you’ll be mesmerized by the lagoon’s stunning beauty and ever-changing appearance. It’s no wonder that this location has inspired so many moviemakers to film here, including James Bond movies Die Another Day and A View to a Kill, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Batman Begins, and The Northman.

Our experienced guides will provide insight into the geological formations and history of the area, as well as the unique cultural and traditional significance of this stunning location. Join us on our day tour of Iceland’s South Coast and discover the beauty and magic of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon for yourself.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a stunning natural wonder created by the Breiðarmerkurjökull glacial tongue, one of the outlet glaciers from Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajokull. In the 1970s, the retreating glacier left a huge pond near the coast that eventually became Iceland’s deepest lake.

One of the most striking features of the glacier lagoon is the floating icebergs, which come in various shades of blue and even have brownish stripes, thanks to the ash sediment from volcanic eruptions decades ago. As the icebergs break off from the glacier, they roll, tumble, and drift around the lagoon, constantly changing colors, shapes, and appearances. Over time, they break down into smaller pieces and are washed out to sea, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Summer is an ideal time to explore Jokulsarlon, as you can take an optional boat ride to sail among the icebergs and experience them up close. You’ll also have the chance to observe the lagoon’s vibrant wildlife, including Arctic terns nesting nearby and adorable seals swimming around or resting on icebergs. Exploring Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon offers an unforgettable experience and a chance to witness the purest elements of Iceland’s nature.

If you are interested in this tour with a boat ride on Jokulsarlon – then check it out here.

man standing and watching the sunset at Diamond Beach in south Iceland

Diamond Beach is located adjacent to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and is known for its unique beauty. The beach gets its name from the scattered icebergs of various sizes and shapes that have washed up on its black sand shores. These icebergs come from the Breiðamerkursandur glacial outwash plain and are a result of the glacier tongue breaking away.

Walking on the beach and seeing the contrasting black sand and blue icebergs is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the fresh sea air and may even spot seals playing in the surf.

Once you’ve explored the lagoon and the beach, we’ll start our journey back to Reykjavik, stopping at various iconic attractions along the scenic south coast.

Stjornarfoss waterfall

Stjórnarfoss Waterfall - South Iceland Tour Guide

Our itinerary includes a stop at the off-the-beaten-path, hidden gem, yet highly-recommended Stjórnarfoss waterfall . This photogenic waterfall cascades in two stages, with each stage measuring about 15 meters (49.21 ft) high. It’s a sight to behold and has been popular among photographers for its unique appearance. The waterfall originates from the Stjórn River, flowing out from a valley, creating a mysterious atmosphere.

Vik Village & Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks

Vík í Mýrdal - Iceland Tour Guide

Vík í Mýrdal is a picturesque seaside village located at Iceland’s southernmost point. Despite being small with only 300 residents, it boasts a plethora of stunning natural wonders that make it a must-see destination. Visitors can take a break from their journey to recharge and shop for souvenirs at several stores and gift shops in the village.

In the summertime, the unique nature of Vík provides a vibrant array of colors that create a truly magical experience. The black sand beach in Vík is highly rated for its diverse scenery and the beautifully sculpted sea stacks that add to its charm – Reynisdrangar cliffs. The sound of the heavy tides crashing against the shore creates a dreamy, misty world that is perfect for a relaxing break.

Don’t miss the chance to take a picture of the magnificent Reynisdrangur sea stack in the distance while you’re here!

South Coast Iceland, Seljalandsfoss waterfall - south Iceland tour guide

Glacier Lagoon and Vatnajökull glacier

Our day tour will begin with a fast and efficient pick-up service. We will collect you from either one of the hotels in the center of Reykjavik or one of the many designated pick-up stops in the city. Once we have all of our guests on board, we will begin our exciting journey.

Heading out to South Iceland via Route 1, you can expect to see iconic sceneries on both sides: silver-topped glaciers, black sand lowlands, mossy lava fields, and the glistering Atlantic ocean beaconing afar. The South Coast of Iceland is full of dramatic scenes.

Fjallsárlón in summer

Before we reach Jokulsarlon, we will stop at Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a less-visited yet completely stunning location in the Vatnajökull National Park.  Here you can enjoy incredible views over the Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Vatnajokull’s glacier tongue.

Fjallsárlón, although, not as renowned as Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, is in fact a local favorite, as outdoor lovers like to kayak or take a zodiac boat ride on its serene lake, among the icebergs with a much closer distance to the outlet glacier. The jagged glacier ice and its countless crevices form an unforgettable icescape.

Glacier Lagoon Winter

After a few hours of driving, we will reach our highlight destination, the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, praised as Iceland’s crown jewel. It’s located near the Vatnajokull National Park, about 380 km (236.12 miles) from Reykjavik.

Jokulsarlon is popular for its stunning beauty and ever-changing appearance. It also inspired many moviemakers to give their work a unique touch. James Bond movies Die Another Day and A View to a Kill shot here as well as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Batman Begins, and The Northman all shot scenes in this area.

Jokulsarlon was created by the Breiðarmerkurjökull glacial tongue, one of the outlet glaciers from Iceland’s largest ice cap Vatnajokull. In the 1970s, the retreating glacier left a huge pond near the coast that eventually became Iceland’s deepest lake.

Another feature you will notice in the glacier lagoon is the floating icebergs, which glow in different shades of blue. Some of them even have brownish stripes, due to the ash sediment from volcanic eruptions decades ago.

After the iceberg calves off from the glacier, they roll, tumble, and drift around the lagoon, making them change colors, shapes, and appearances frequently. Over time, they break down into smaller pieces and are washed out to the sea. It’s absolutely breathtaking to watch.

Summer is a fantastic time to explore the lagoon as you may want to join a boat ride to sail among the icebergs, which is an optional extra. Seeing the floating icebergs close up is overwhelmingly unforgettable. Jokulsarlon also hosts vivid wildlife. Arctic terns nest close by, lovely seals swim around or rest on icebergs, and you get to experience the purest element of Iceland’s nature.

Crystal Iceberg on Diamond Beach

The icebergs that broke away from the glacier tongue wander into the lagoon before being washed ashore. Some still immense and blue, some tiny and crystal, these pieces of glacier ice scatter on the black sand beach, forming an eye-pleasing contrast. Truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

You may find some peacefulness walking in the fresh sea air, and maybe even some playfulness from the seals playing in the surf.

After you visit the lagoon and the beach, we will then head back to the capital along the south coast, stopping at several iconic attractions on our way.

The surprising attractions keep coming, as we explore more of the South Coast of Iceland.  We will take a small detour to see an attractive yet lesser-known natural wonder, Stjórnarfoss waterfall. It’s a highly recommended attraction for a Ring Road trip itinerary, which is why we want to show off this venture off-the-beaten-track landmark.

Stjórnarfoss waterfall cascade falls in two stages, both about 15 meters (49.21 ft)  high. The lower drop falls over a dome-shaped rock in the form of an eye-pleasing symmetry. The photogenic waterfall has attracted many photographers for its unique appearance. Originating from the Stjórn river off of Mount Geirlandshraun, Stjórnarfoss streams out from a valley, creating a mysterious atmosphere.

A charming seafront village, Vík í Mýrdal is small with only 300 inhabitants, but filled with amazing natural wonders as Iceland’s southernmost village. Several stores and gift shops with great options are found here for visitors to recharge and shop for souvenirs.

The unique nature gives Vik vibrant colors in summer. The black sand beach at Vik is a top-rated destination for its diverse sceneries, and marvelously sculpted sea stacks.  It all helps to fulfill visitors’ imaginations, with the sound of heavy tides splashing and creating a dreamy, misty world.

Use the stop at Vík to take a picture of the magnificent Reynisdrangur sea stack in the distance.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall in summer

One of Iceland’s most well-known, most popular waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss waterfall is fed by the glacial meltwater from the famous/notorious glacier volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Falling from a 60-meter cliff, Seljalandsfoss hosts a special surprise.

When conditions are allowed, visitors can walk behind the cascade and take a look at the entire area from behind the fall for a spectacular panoramic view.

After the visit to the waterfall, it takes about two hours to reach the capital. We will head back to our bus and hit the road to Reykjavik via Route 1.

Discover the sheer magnificence of not one, but two towering waterfalls that will leave you breathless. Immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of the world-renowned Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you'll witness a mesmerizing display of nature's grandeur. And don't miss the chance to wander amidst the shimmering ice fragments on the captivating Diamond Beach .

But wait, there's more! This exhilarating tour kicks off with a convenient city pick-up, allowing you to sit back and savor the jaw-dropping vistas as we traverse the majestic Blue Mountains towards the fertile farmlands that line the iconic Route 1 along the South Coast.

Prepare to be enthralled as we embark on the famous "Ring Road," guiding us straight to the awe-inspiring Seljalandsfoss . This 60-meter waterfall cascades from the legendary Eyjafjallajökull , the volcano that brought air travel to a halt in 2010! And here's the cherry on top - you can actually stroll behind this mesmerizing waterfall, as long as you watch your step!

As if that weren't enough, another breathtaking 60-meter waterfall, Skógafoss , awaits nearby. Once adorned with lush forests by the early Vikings, this enchanting cascade has become an iconic backdrop for Hollywood films, TV shows, and music videos. Brace yourself for an awe-inspiring sight that will leave you in a state of pure wonder, with rainbows dancing through the mist if the sun is shining bright!

Our lunch break takes us to the charming coastal village of Vík , the southernmost point in Iceland. Feast your eyes on the majestic Reynisdrangar rock formations jutting out of the sea, while a fairytale-like church perches atop a hill, overlooking the enchanting surroundings.

Prepare to be captivated by Iceland's title as the "Land of Fire and Ice," as we journey along the South Coast and witness the colossal glaciers that blanket a significant portion of the country. Marvel at these frozen giants as they reach towards the sea, witnessing the mesmerizing spectacle of massive icebergs calving into glacial lagoons during the spring thaw.

Jökulsárlón , nestled conveniently beside the Ring Road, stands as a testament to Iceland's natural wonders, inviting you to revel in the unrivaled thrill of experiencing this breathtaking location on our South Coast, Diamond Beach, and Glacier Lagoon tour .

As the icebergs gracefully float within the dazzling Glacier Lagoon, their frozen blue and white fragments are shaped by the wind, creating a constantly evolving masterpiece. Immerse yourself in this captivating scene, where every glance reveals a new wonder. During the summer months, you have the option to embark on a boat tour for an up-close encounter with these majestic ice sculptures. Be prepared for the occasional thunderous crash as icebergs topple, sending ripples through the lagoon. And keep your eyes peeled, as seals often bask in the sun, adding to the enchantment of this magnificent place!

Just a stone's throw away lies the astonishing Diamond Beach.  Picture fragments of icebergs artfully scattered across a dramatic black sand beach, glistening like precious gems on a velvet pillow. Witness the tireless work of fierce winds and the relentless Atlantic waves as they sculpt these ice fragments into extraordinary shapes, creating a scene that seems straight out of a dream.

During Northern Lights season, the driver will make a stop on the return if there is a high likelihood of viewing the Aurora Borealis!

Prepare to be swept away by the sheer magnificence and unparalleled beauty of the South Coast and Glacier Lagoon. This is an adventure of a lifetime, where every moment is filled with wonder and excitement, leaving you with memories that will last forever!

  • Seljalandsfoss: The 60-meter-high waterfall, famous for the hidden pathway which leads next to and around to the other side.

Seljalandsfoss:

Prepare to be awestruck by the majestic Seljalandsfoss, a towering 60-meter-high waterfall that will leave you spellbound. But the real magic lies in the hidden pathway that takes you right next to the falls and even around to the other side. Feel the power of nature as you walk behind the cascading water and experience an adventure like no other. Just don't forget your rain jacket, as you'll be sure to get soaked in the perpetual mist! This iconic waterfall is a must-visit attraction on the South Coast of Iceland, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

Brace yourself for the awe-inspiring Skógafoss, a powerful glacial waterfall that will leave you breathless. As you ascend the stairs that lead up to the top, you'll be rewarded with one of Iceland's most scenic views. Feast your eyes on the magnificent glaciers, volcanoes, and black sand beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. Don't forget your camera, as this is a photographer's paradise. With viewpoints both above and next to the waterfall, you'll have ample opportunities to capture that perfect shot. Skógafoss is a must-visit destination that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

Nestled on Iceland's southernmost coast, the charming town of Vík is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Picture-perfect houses dot the landscape, with a traditional Icelandic church proudly perched upon a hill, overlooking the majestic ocean. Explore the quaint town at your leisure, grab a delicious lunch, or simply soak in the breathtaking views. Vík is a picturesque haven that will capture your heart and leave you longing for more.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon:

Prepare to be amazed as you step foot into one of Iceland's most spectacular areas - the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Witness a mesmerizing sight as icebergs, calved from the Vatnajökull glacier, float gracefully in the crystal-clear waters. With the majestic Vatnajökull glacier as a backdrop, this ethereal landscape will transport you to another world. Keep an eye out for playful seals that sometimes make an appearance in the lagoon. Jökulsárlón is a true natural wonder that will leave you in awe of the beauty of Iceland.

Diamond Beach:

Nestled along the southern coast of Iceland, the Diamond Beach is a mesmerizing spectacle that will leave you breathless. As you step onto the black sandy shores, your eyes are immediately drawn to the sparkling icebergs that have washed ashore from the nearby Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Like glistening diamonds scattered across the beach, these ice chunks create a stunning contrast against the dark volcanic sands. The sound of crashing waves and the crisp Arctic air heighten your senses, creating an otherworldly experience. It's as if you've stumbled upon a secret treasure trove, where nature showcases its most exquisite jewels. The Diamond Beach is a place where dreams come alive and the beauty of nature takes center stage.

Your friendly Zodiac guide will meet you at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon parking lot by the big blue pickup truck at least 30 minutes before your departure time. There is a short bus ride to the dock. At this point, you’ll fasten your flotation suit or life vest and prepare for an incredible Icelandic glacier tour, taking you to Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and the deep serenity of the lagoon.

This tour allows a full 60 minutes of cruising on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in the Zodiac boat , exploring the majestic sights and seeing the wildlife. In addition to seals, you’re likely to see a variety of bird species. During the summer, you are likely to see Arctic Terns as they migrate. Your guide will also point out graceful Arctic Skuas nesting along the lake’s edge, as well as mighty seagulls.

Drifting between these looming, curiously shaped icebergs on a Jökulsárlón Zodiac boat tour is an enchanting and otherworldly experience, enjoyed by photographers and adventurers alike. On the surface of the icebergs, you will see vibrant blue tones and gray veins, which were formed from ash residue as a result of various volcanic eruptions. Make sure to keep your camera ready at all times so that you’re able to catch the crystal-clear reflections of the icebergs on the surface of the water, as well as the humbling glacier scenery.

Over time, the appearance of the lagoon and surrounding areas could change drastically if the icebergs melt. So, if you’re planning to enjoy a Zodiac boat tour at the lagoon, we recommend making the best of your time here and exploring the area. Take the time to make the short walk to the nearby Diamond Beach. This black sand beach, officially called Breiðamerkursandur, is a truly hypnotic sight. Pieces of the icebergs at Jökulsárlón break off and float to this beach, resting and glistening against the black sand.

Please note

Warm layers, a waterproof top layer, headwear, gloves, scarves, and sturdy shoes.

Jòn our guide was fantastic. The ice cave formation was amazing. However, i would not recommend this tour for people with mobility issues, it is a bit of a hike from the van to the cave. Uphill mostly. But the experience on walking on ice and seeing mother nature create this masterpiece was spectacular. A must see.

Ice caves in Iceland

Iceland is often hailed as a land of stark contrasts, where you can explore the ethereal beauty of a glacier ice cave.

Forged in fire and ice, Iceland is alive with primordial energy unlike anywhere else in the world. The geological and geothermal elements provide seductive sightseeing activities and visiting ice caves and ice tunnels is an activity which should not be overlooked while travelling in Iceland.

Iceland has many different caves, both well known and uncharted, but if you would like to visit a glacier ice cave, you are guaranteed an entirely one of a kind visit. Ice caves change from year to year, due to the movement of the glaciers and Iceland's ever-changing weather — and the unique character of each ice cave is an alluring call to adventure.

The incredible beauty to be admired inside the reaches of a glacier has a divine quality which, when combined with the geothermal power of Iceland, can make you feel like you are closer to earth’s beginnings.

11% of Iceland's landmass is covered with glaciers which means that an abundance of ice caves are found in the extremely thick glacial ice. These natural ice caves form when summer meltwater flows through the ice sheets, carving tunnels that can be explored during the colder months of winter.

Most often, all light is absorbed in these icy vacuums, rendering the caves in brilliant blue ice colours that are unparalleled anywhere else. Some caves also have what looks like black ice, where volcanic ash has landed on the caves. This natural occurrence is truly magnificent to witness.Ice caves in the region of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, were previously referred to as the Crystal Caves. The sheer size of these caves liken them to an icy citadel, its heavenly blues and enchanting coolness evoking a real sense of awe. You will want to take a camera, but nothing can prepare you for the subject.

Most day tours which involve visiting a glacier cave in Iceland involve taking a super jeep up onto the glacier. There you will be fitted with crampons (studs which fit over your boots) and be invited to take a short glacier hike (less than 5 minutes) into the cave.

Ice cave tours in Iceland can be taken at several places throughout the island. The best ice cave tours in Iceland take place at Vatnajokull glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Closer to Reykjavik, and extremely close to Vik, the ice caves in Myradsjokull glacier are popular among travellers. The meeting point for this day tour is at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, from where you embark on the super jeep journey.

There are also tours of man-made ice tunnels which have been created in the Langjokull glacier. Some tours are available year-round and those in this area are ideal for those traversing the golden circle. Nearby Gullfoss waterfall is a popular stop on guided tours.

No-one should ever attempt going into an ice cave or tunnel without a guide, no matter how experienced they are, and with no end to guided ice cave tours, you have no reason to try.
