An Amazing Australian Road Trip
Jackie hosking (text) and lesley vamos (illustrator), an amazing australian road trip , walker books, january 2021, 40 pp., rrp $24.99 (hbk), isbn 9781760650766.
Starting in Melbourne, the family pile into their car, on a quest to go west, to find a scenic spot to have a picnic and wish aunty a happy 60th birthday. They discover many amazing sites (and sights) as they travel around Australia, eventually arriving home for their long-awaited celebration.
This colourful narrative nonfiction book is a feast of interesting titbits about the most culturally significant places in our nation. The story is told in verse, with a destination on each double-page spread, including the place name and state, fascinating facts, and the occasional definition for Aussie slang. There are facts enough to match the rollicking verse and bright comical illustrations to keep the reader’s interest. Children will love making connections with the places they recognise.
Recommended for lower to middle primary readers.

An Amazing Australian Road Trip
Description
A rambunctious romp of a family road trip around Australia looking for the right place to celebrate Aunty's birthday with a cake. An everyday Aussie family leaves their Melbourne home, makes for the Great Ocean Road and finds themselves on the journey of a lifetime to every state and territory of Australia.
They visit many iconic places along the way and although it wasn't their original intention, they experience the whole gamut of landscapes, climates and wonders that Australia has to offer: from The Twelve (now seven) Apostles, to Coober Pedy, Ningaloo Reef, Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, the Harbour Bridge, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Port Arthur and finally, back home to Melbourne.
An Amazing Australian Road Trip (Jackie Hosking, illus by Lesley Vamos, Walker Books)
This cheerful picture book employs a lively rhyming narrative alongside factual snippets, creating a unique reading experience that is sure to appeal to fans of both fiction and nonfiction. The narrative follows a boisterous family as they embark on a road trip around Australia to celebrate Aunty’s 60th birthday, while the nonfiction text provides facts about the landmarks they visit. Both Jackie Hosking’s rhyming story and Lesley Vamos’s glorious illustrations are extremely entertaining, and young readers will particularly appreciate the book’s many visual gags (such as the person sitting on a toilet in an underground house in Coober Pedy and Aunty being sick over the side of the Spirit of Tasmania). The nonfiction text outweighs, but does not overwhelm, the narrative. While the illustrations and rhyming text are wonderful, the nonfiction copy would have benefitted from a sensitivity reader. For example, the language used in relation to Kakadu—‘Kakadu has been occupied by Aboriginal people for at least 50,00 years and more than half of the park is Aboriginal land’—feels a little insensitive. It is particularly jarring that it appears alongside the gorgeously diverse family of Vamos’s illustrations.

An amazing australian road trip.
Reviewed by Kylie Buckley An Amazing Australian Road Trip is an entertaining and informative picture book that introduces the reader to many of Australia’s most fascinating places, including some World Heritage and National Heritage listed sites.
A family of five enjoy a fun road trip around Australia in search of the perfect picnic spot for Auntie’s 60 th birthday. They stop in every state and territory and enjoy a range of tourist attractions and landmarks. However, Aunty doesn’t feel that any of the locations are quite right for her special occasion. What will it take to find the ideal place for the celebration? The humorous tale may be read aloud in its entirety so that young listeners can enjoy the rhythm, rhyme and storyline without interruption. Alternatively, the pace may be slowed so that a more curious audience can stop and absorb the additional text presented on each page. The non-fiction component of the book contains a myriad of interesting facts and figures about these natural, historical and indigenous places of significance. The digitally created cartoon-like illustrations are presented on double page spreads and depict plenty of action to engage a young audience. It is worth spending some extra time looking at the front and back endpapers for a comical comparison. An Amazing Australian Road Trip is recommended for readers aged 5 years and older.

Jackie Hosking is a Nigerian-born Cornish Australian. She moved to Victoria, Australia when she was ten.
Jackie has always loved reading, but she didn’t start writing until her youngest child turned two. Her first poem for children was published by The School Magazine in 2005.

Having grown up in Australia, Vamos studied at the college of Fine Arts, receiving a Distinction and Animation Honor in a Bachelor of Digital media.
Since learning how to hold a pencil (albeit incorrectly) the only time she puts it down is when she has to eat and even then her food can be the victim of artistic subjection (camp mates will forever remember the time she attempted to carve the statue of David out of her mashed potatoes).
Since graduating COFA Vamos has spent her time traveling, doodling, meeting friends with the same enthusiasm for creative expression and communication as well as getting to know and experience as many facets of the creative industry she can.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I just love the story of the Pevensie siblings who step through the wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia, a land of eternal winter ruled by the White Witch. When almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change . . . and a great sacrifice.

So my fiance and I are about to be making some big changes - we're moving across the country, and getting married a week later! It's a very exciting time, but last weekend we took a shorter road trip just for fun (about 4 hours each way) and realized that for the 3-4 days of driving the moving van with our two cats, we really need to figure out something to do, and I thought maybe some ...
