Irish travel company Joe Walsh Tours to reopen after ceasing business earlier this year
ONE OF IRELAND’S best known travel companies, Joe Walsh Tours, which ceased trading in April of this year during the Covid-19 pandemic, is set to reopen.
Joe Walsh Tours first opened its doors in 1961. The company specialised in tours to pilgrimage destinations, among other products.
After ceasing trading in April 2021, KPMG were appointed liquidators of the company.
In a statement at the time, Joe Walsh Tours said it was hit hard by the pandemic and did “everything it could” to continue to trade.
Following a sales process, David Walsh, who had been involved in the company’s operations prior to its closure, has announced that he has reached an agreement with the liquidators to acquire the business and certain assets, including the Joe Walsh Tours brand.
Other brands purchased as part of the arrangement include Pilgrimages Abroad & Concorde Travel.
“We are delighted to announce the reopening of Joe Walsh Tours. Parishes, group leaders, dioceses and special interest groups around Ireland have repeatedly voiced their need for their assistance of a specialist licensed and bonded group travel company, when coordinating foreign group travel and we are ready to facilitate these groups,” a spokesperson said.
The Commission for Aviation Regulation is still in the process of refunding all former customers of Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd who were due to depart from the Republic of Ireland.
All UK customers of the company have been refunded through a Total Payment Protection policy provided by Travel & General Insurance Services Ltd.

Travel company Joe Walsh Tours reopens six months after ceasing trading
KPMG were appointed liquidators of the company, who put the business back up for sale in May.
Six months after ceasing trade, Ireland’s oldest and largest travel agent and tour operator is set to reopen.
Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd, trading under a number of different brand names, shut its doors in April of this year as a result of the pandemic and said it was unable to fulfil its obligations to customers.
The company had a bond in place to cover all passengers who had booked package trips.
Following an extensive sales process, David Walsh, who had been involved in running the firm prior to its closure, announced he has acquired the business and certain assets of Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd including the Joe Walsh Tours brand.
Other brands purchased as part of the arrangement include Pilgrimages Abroad & Concorde Travel.
“We are delighted to announce the re-opening of Joe Walsh Tours," a spokesman said.
"Parishes, group leaders, dioceses and special interest groups around Ireland have repeatedly voiced their need for the assistance of a specialist licensed and bonded group travel company, when co-ordinating foreign group travel and we are ready to facilitate these groups."
The Commission for Aviation Regulation is still in the process of refunding all former customers of Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd who were due to depart from the Republic of Ireland.
Joe Walsh Tours was founded in 1961 by Co Down native Joe Walsh, and became well known for specialised tours to pilgrimage destinations.
Prior to the pandemic, the company had offices in the UK, Europe, and the US and employed more than 100 people.

One of Ireland's oldest and top travel agents and tour operators, Joe Walsh Tours, has closed down after 60 years in business.
The Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) said Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd, trading under ten different brand names including Joe Walsh Tour, isn't able to fulfil its obligations to customers and has ceased trading.
The CAR said: "The Commission operates a consumer protection scheme and, if you find you are out of pocket, you may be covered by this scheme.
"The Commission also operates a Refund Credit Note Scheme. You may be covered by this scheme if your holiday has been cancelled due to Covid-19 and you have yet to receive a refund from Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd."
Before the pandemic struck, the company employed over a hundred people and had offices in the UK, Europe and America but is beleived to have around 25 staff at the moment.
Joe Walsh Tours was founded in 1961 by a Down man Joe Walsh after he had worked with for the Ulster Transport Authority and after that Thomas Cook in London.
He saw the potential for growth in the travel industry in Ireland and started offering package holidays.
It grew into one of Ireland's biggest travel companies.
They specialised in running tours to pilgrimage desinations and escorted tours as well as sports, music, schools, cruises and overseas wedding.
The family owned company is now run by Joe Walsh's sons Barry and David Walsh.
Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours said in a statement that they had stopped trading and hadn't traded since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
However, the company added that they stayed open during that time to help customers with bookings and refunds.
It said: "Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd. did everything they could to see themselves and their customers through the pandemic.
"Travel protocols in Ireland are the most restrictive in Europe, putting Irish travel companies at a disadvantage to their European counterparts."
The company added that they had business interruption insurance in place and had hoped to be able to continue trading following a refund claim from the insurers but they haven't been able to reach an agreement with the insurers at the moment.
They said:"We would like to thank, at this time, all our customers over the years.
"We would also like to acknowledge the incredible effort that our staff have made, and for their loyalty and support, particularly during the last year."
The Commission for Aviation Regulation said that customers could be covered by the consumer protection schemes if they bought a package from Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd and the package included travel from Ireland.
Customers may also be covered by the scheme if they purchased travel only starting in Ireland.
People with a refund credit note from Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd may be entitled to a refund from the Refund Credit Note scheme if their booking was a package that included travel leaving Ireland.
The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) has noted with regret that Joe Walsh Tours has ceased trading.
Holidaymakers who have a holiday booking with Joe Walsh Tours and have concerns should contact the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR).
As a licensed and bonded travel agent, customers may be eligible for a refund.
Details on how to claim against the bond can be found on the CAR website.
The Commission also operates a Refund Credit Note Scheme.
Clients may be covered by this scheme if their holiday has been cancelled due to Covid-19 and they have yet to receive a refund from Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd.
Pat Dawson, CEO of the ITAA said, “It is a sad day for the travel industry as this long established agent closes its doors. Joe Walsh Tours was established in 1961 and was one of Ireland’s leading travel companies through the decades, certainly one of the best known.
"Indeed many travel agents throughout the country learnt their trade with JWT before opening up their own travel agencies.”
“This closure highlights the difficulties the travel industry has been experiencing. The Irish Travel Agents Association call on the Government to extend income support for travel agents into 2022 when the public are back travelling and holidaying again.”
He continued, “As a bonded travel agent, Joe Walsh Tours customers who booked travel commencing in Ireland may be eligible for a refund under the Commission’s consumer protection scheme. We advise anyone affected to contact CAR and complete a claim form .”

Former JWT shareholder buying back assets in bid to revive business
Tour operator forced to fold in april as industry hit hard by covid travel restrictions.
David Walsh is buying Joe Walsh Tours’ brands, including Pilgrimages Abroad and Concorde Travel, websites, goodwill and other assets from the liquidators.
Former Joe Walsh Tours shareholder David Walsh is buying its main assets from liquidator KPMG in a bid to revive the business.
The High Court appointed Eamonn Richardson and Andrew O'Leary of KPMG as liquidators to Joe Walsh Tours and other linked companies when Government Covid restrictions forced the travel agent to fold in April.
A statement on Wednesday confirmed that Mr Walsh is buying Joe Walsh's brands, including Pilgrimages Abroad and Concorde Travel, websites, goodwill and other assets from the liquidators.
KPMG sought competing bids for the assets during the summer, and Mr Walsh’s offer was the best received.

The price was not disclosed, but it is understood that it will not cover the €5 million in liabilities left when the travel agent and tour operator was placed in liquidation.
The Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) is refunding customers of Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours in the Republic who were prevented from travelling by the liquidation. The company had a bond with the regulator to cover this. The process is still ongoing.
UK customers have been refunded through the Total Payment Protection policy provided by Travel & General Insurances Ltd.
The €5 million liabilities included holidaymakers and business creditors such as suppliers. The bondholders will become creditors in the liquidation.
Mr Walsh’s new business is seeking a licence from the CAR, which regulates travel agents. It plans to operate in various specialist tour markets, including pilgrimages, in which the original group was a leading player.
A spokesman said that parishes, dioceses and special-interest groups had all signalled the need for a licensed and bonded travel company to aid them in organising trips. “We are ready to facilitate these groups,” he added.
Joe Walsh Tours grew into one of Ireland’s best-known travel businesses after first opening its doors in 1961. Mr Walsh and other family members, Margaret and Barry Walsh, took over the business from its founder, Joe Walsh.
The company had hoped to raise additional cash earlier this year, but Government foreign travel bans deterred investment in its industry. Joe Walsh was one of several companies in the travel and aviation sectors forced into liquidation or some form of insolvency process during the pandemic.

Really enjoyed our pilgrimage to Medjugorje this year. It was wonderful for our group to be led again by Philip. I travelled with Joe Walsh tours to Lourdes in July 2023. Everything was organised very well. Our group leader Joan was amazing and really went the extra mile to ensure that we had a great experience both spiritually and socially. Each ceremony was beautifully organised and we got to know our fellow pilgrims very quickly. I came back spiritually refreshed.

I am just home from a pilgrimage with Joe Walsh Tours in Medjugorje. Philip Ryan and his team out there are second to none. From the day my pilgrimage was booked with the JWT office in Dublin, I knew my trip was in safe hands. From the minute we got off the plane and were guided to Medjugorje by Julia to our departure with Enes, nothing is too much to ask of the JWT staff. It is such a special place where JWT staff guide pilgrims to have a very memorable pilgrimage under the guidance of Our Lady.

Looking forward to the next one.

Joe Walsh on the Eagles' Long Goodbye Tour: “we recognize that we can’t do this forever"
Courtesy Live Nation
The Eagles recently announced their final tour, dubbed The Long Goodbye, and judging by recent comments from guitarist Joe Walsh , they really do expect it will be a long time before they hang it up for good.
"We're in our seventies, and we recognize that we can't do this forever," the 75-year-old Walsh tells Variety about their decision to launch a farewell tour, although he doesn't sound quite ready to give up life on the road.
"I think people like B.B. King set an example, which is, there's no reason to stop unless you can't do it," he continued. "And so we're just announcing that we're gonna just focus on playing quality shows and slow it down a little bit. And we're gonna play till we can't, or play till nobody comes, whichever comes first."
He adds, “But they’re still coming, so why stop? That’s the only thing we know how to do.”
The Long Goodbye tour, with special guest Steely Dan, kicks off September 7 at New York's Madison Square Garden. A presale starts July 12; the general onsale begins Friday, July 14, at 10 a.m. local time. The first set of dates can be found at eagles.com .

Joe Walsh on Eagles Final Tour: “We’re Gonna Play Until We Can’t”
by Cillea Houghton July 9, 2023, 8:00 am
Joe Walsh is opening up about the Eagles’ upcoming final tour. On Friday (July 7), the iconic band revealed that they’re set to embark on The Eagles The Long Goodbye Final Tour in 2023. Though some of the current band members, including Walsh, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit, are past the age of 70, they do foresee touring for the next couple of years to ensure that fans have ample opportunity to see them live for the last time.

“We’re in our seventies, and we recognize that we can’t do this forever,” Walsh told Variety at Ringo Starr’s 83rd birthday party on July 7. The longtime Eagles guitarist says the band is emphasizing quality over quantity with the upcoming shows and plans to keep performing as long as fans keep showing up.
“I think people like BB King set an example, which is, there’s no reason to stop unless you can’t do it,” he said. “And so we’re just announcing that we’re gonna just focus on playing quality shows and slow it down a little bit. And we’re gonna play until we can’t, or play until nobody comes, whichever comes first. But they’re still coming, so why stop? That’s the only thing we know how to do.”
The Eagles’ tour begins on September 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and currently has dates scheduled through November 14 at Rupp Arenanergy Center in Lexington, Kentucky. The band will continue to announce more shows as dates are set.
“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe, keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals, and setbacks of many kinds,” the band shared in a collective statement. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long-run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”
Tickets go on sale Friday (July 14).
