Reverse Pickups/DTO

• Updated on 05 Apr 2024

If a customer wants to return a delivered order, you can create a Reverse Pickup. They are also called Customer Return or Direct-to-Origin (DTO). It contains

Reverse Order Number This contains the reverse order number, order date

Reverse Order Items: The items returned in the order include the SKU Code, SKU name, and quantity

Return Address: Each shipment will have a return address to where it needs to be delivered

• Reverse Order Lifecycle
• How can I ship a reverse orders with Delhivery One?

There are two ways of creating a Reverse Pickup / DTO order.

• Initiate Return for a forward delivered order
• Navigate to Orders & Pickups > Forward Orders > Delivered
• You can create a Reverse Order by clicking on "Initiate Return" on Delivered listing page for forward orders.
• If your order has single item quantity, then the entire order shall be created as a return order.
• If your order has multiple item quantity, you can choose to return the entire order or create a partial return by changing the quantity of each item being returned.
• Create Reverse Orders manually

Navigate to Main Menu > Orders & Pickups > Reverse Orders > Create Reverse Order

1. Add Order& Other Details

• Enter Order ID (This is source channel sale order number)
• Enter the Reference Number (This can be AWB number of the original shipment if the courier partner was other than Delhivery)
• Reason of Return
• Notes for the Field Executive if any

2. Add Items

Add items to the Reverse Order.

• You can type the name of the item you want to add to the Sale Order. If present, the item details will populate in the drop-down list; else, create a new item.
• Add more items as required
• Select " My package contains fragile/liquid items " to provide specific handling instructions

3. Add Customer details

Select the Customer to whom the shipment needs to be picked from.

4. Add Return Location

Select the Return Location from where the Delhivery agent will return the shipment

5. Box Dimension / Weight & Shipping Mode

Add the Box Dimensions & Weight & select the Shipping mode (Surface / Express). Add box as required.

6. Manifest Return

Click** Manifest Reverse Order**, this will create a return & an AWB number. The status of the return will be Ready for Pickup.

The Order tracker will give you detailed information about your return shipment.

Worst courier service you can ever go for.

I wish there would be 0 stars. They them selves don't come for pickup, then they mark as, we were not available. They give zero care for our shipment. I ordered queen size bed from amazon, there were 2 shipments, but got only one (even in tampered condition), but they marked I received both of them. Now struggling to return it, simply they are not picking up my return, by marking me as not available. Agents speak only Kannada.

Worst service ever

Initial Delivery: The delivery agent demanded payment during the delivery, despite it being a free delivery product. Damage Report: Upon discovering the product was damaged, I initiated a return and refund request the next day. Misguided Pick-up: The same delivery agent initially indicated they would pick up the damaged product but failed to do so after waiting for over 2 hours and then stated they weren't coming. Inconvenient Collection Point: Despite being entitled to a home door pickup, the delivery agent requested me bring the product to their preferred location, which was not feasible for me. Missed Pick-up: Due to your inability to comply with the agent's request to bring the product to an alternative location, the agent intentionally skipped picking up the damaged item. Deadline Concerns: With the product return deadline approaching, the repeated postponement of the pickup by the delivery agent caused anxiety and frustration. Personal Intervention: Losing trust in the service and the delivery agent, I took matters into my own hands. I personally traveled over 10km to deliver the damaged product directly to the delivery vehicle, thereby ensuring its return despite the challenges faced. Feedback and Conclusion: Expressing dissatisfaction with the overall service experience, I concluded that this was the worst service encountered and advised against recommending the service to others

Very bad customer service and very rude…

Very bad customer service and very rude employees. I recently couriered an item via Porter from Kolkata to Guwahati. They charged my 600 ruppes. In Guwahati they delivered the item to Delhivery. For the next 8 days I kept on recieving messages that delivery could not be done as client is not reachable. Then one day delivery boy calls and says he is stuck in traffic and can deliver next day. Again dead silence for next 2 days. On the 3rd day the item is returned and travelling back to Kolkata. On calling the delivery boy, he says his bodd Dibyajyoti Rabha knows about it. On speaking to Bibyajyoti he says speak to customer care and dismisses my call. I have never seen such despicable service, but India being a big country these company do not care about customer service for retailers like us.

The only way, company can remain true to its working is to change their present name to DELAYVERY. Worst experience. Still i am waiting for my parcel, even after 6 days. No direct contact of service executive who can help you. Only IVRS, which is never addressed. God save this company and its customer

Everything is wrong with this company. Exceptionally horrible service. At any cost, even if they offer free service, avoid them. I lost hope of my product which is delayed by atleast 11 days according to them only. I really ordered my product using another courier service and got delivered. Horrible, Horrible and Horrible. First they should immediately start having a live human customer care service instead of useless automated IVR service which will give you no answer. You call and you answer. That's it. Nothing from them.

Absolutely unprofessional

Absolutely unprofessional. It is 10 days since a box of mangoes was handed over to them , with their commitment to deliver in 5 days. Still no sign of it. Delhivery Poor Customer Support Experience

I am extremely disappointed with Delhivery's service. My order was supposed to be delivered by May 13th, 2024, but now the app shows an expected delivery of May 21st, 2024. Despite multiple follow-ups, I've received no updates or assistance from their customer support team. The Delhivery app's incompetence and the support team's inefficiency are simply unacceptable. Local Delivery Courier Services deliver faster than this….!!

Logistics giant, Delhivery, will be launching its initial public offering (IPO) consisting of a fresh issue of Rs 5,000 crore worth of shares and an offer for sale by existing shareholder of Rs 2,460 crore.

Use of IPO Funds

According to the company’s draft prospectus, it is the largest and fastest growing logistics company in India in terms of revenue. Out of the Rs 5,000 crore that the company plans to raise, it will utilise Rs 2,500 crore towards funding organic expansion. The expansion would include growing the network infrastructure, scaling existing businesses, and upgrading the company’s technology platform.

Out of the remaining funds, it plans to use Rs 1,250 crore towards inorganic expansion. In the past, the company has grown its areas of service through various acquisitions such as Aramex, Spoton, Primaseller and others. The company has spent Rs 1,544 crore on these acquisitions.

The remaining funds would be used for General Corporate Purposes. Delhivery has stuck to the Securities and Exchange Board’s ICDR regulations of not allocating more than 25 per cent of the funds raised to general corporate purposes.

• Business Model

Delhivery currently focuses on providing a full-range of logistics services ranging from express parcel and heavy goods delivery, truckload freights, warehousing solutions, supply chain, cross-border logistics, and e-commerce solutions.

The company operates on an asset-light business model, allowing it to scale up rapidly without incurring high fixed costs. It leases out vehicles, and the logistics infrastructure, while also collaborating with other network partners for these logistics services. The company has 15 million square feet of leased infrastructure.

Delhivery has five business verticals: Express Parcel, Part Truck Load Services, Truck Load Service, Supply Chain Services, and Cross-Border Services.

The express parcel service forms the company’s largest revenue source, though its share has decreased from 83 per cent in 2019 to 70 per cent in 2021. Delhivery serves as a logistics partner for major e-commerce companies. Assembling an entire logistical force can often be unviable, especially for smaller companies. Hence, they prefer to outsource operations to logistics partners like Delhivery.

Revenues from part truck loads and truck load services contributed to around 16 per cent of the company’s revenue in 2021. These businesses allow users to contract a part or the entirety of the truck loads.

These segments have additional revenue sources such as insurance, loading, unloading, cash-collection fees, pick-up etc. The company has created a platform called Orion, which connects truckload capacity to customers. The users can list their requirements for spot or long term freight, and fleet-owners or agents can bid on the platform for the contracts.

In addition, the company offers various supply chain services such as warehousing. The segment forms around 8 to 10 per cent of the company’s revenue from operations. The last segment is the cross border logistics business that offer logistics services outside India.

In terms of expenses, freight handling charges contributed to more than 75 per cent of the company’s expenses over the last three fiscals. These charges include fuel expenses, vehicle leasing expenses, driver expenses, maintenance costs, toll payments and other expenses. Employee expenses are another major item on the company’s income statement. These expenses represent 20 per cent of revenues.

Delhivery’s Financials

Despite the company’s revenue compounding at a rate of 48 per cent per annum over the last three fiscals, the company has made losses in the past three fiscals.

However, the quantum of the losses has decreased from 107 per cent of the revenue in fiscal 2020 to 10 per cent of the revenue in fiscal 2021. The high losses in 2019 were due to buyback obligations of cumulative compulsorily convertible preference shares.

The company has been unable to generate positive operating cash flows, and hence has relied on investors funding so far. It is backed by SoftBank, Federal Express, Fidelity, Chimera, and several other marquee investors. The company’s last funding round valued the start-up at around $3 billion.

But the IPO would value it around $5.5 billion, according to a Reuters’ report . The IPO would allow the company to raise money in an exuberant public market. Carlyle Group and Softbank would be offloading their stake through the IPO. The company also has borrowings of around Rs 340 crore, which translates into a debt-to-equity ratio of less than one and a debt to EBIDTA ratio of around five times.

In the future, the company expects the fragmentation and inefficiency in the sector to decrease as the government simplifies tax structures, and creates better roads. In addition, an underinvestment in technology, human capital, and automation has caused the sector to remain fragmented.

The larger top ten organised players contribute to only 1.5 per cent of the logistics sector in India. In contrast, in the United States the ten largest players contribute to 15 per cent of the logistics markets, and 7-10 per cent in China. 85 per cent of fleets in India are composed of less than 20 trucks.

In the warehousing space, small warehouses with areas less than 10,000 square feet dominate the Indian market. As the sector consolidates, Delhivery believes that large integrated technologically-aware players like it could dominate the logistics markets.

Logistical Disruptions

Any logistical disruptions, roadblocks, strikes, or natural calamities could inhibit the company’s ability to execute its operations.

Third-Party Network Partnerships

The company operates on an asset-light model and coordinates with several different third-party operators. The actions of third-party operators could jeopardise the operations and brand reputation of Delhivery.

Overhead Expenses

Oil prices have affected logistics companies in the past. The company leases vehicles from fleet operators, but has to pay for fuel, and employee expenses. Rising fuel prices could put pressure on the company’s margins.

Competition

The company faces intense competition in the space from various players, both organised and unorganised. In addition, several companies have begun developing their own supply chains to have greater control over the customer’s experience.

Dependence on E-Commerce

Like mentioned earlier, the company derives around 70 per cent of its revenues from e-commerce companies. The companies prefer to outsource logistics to third party companies in a bid to keep their costs low, and stick to the core business.

However, if these companies begin building their own logistics base, like some have, Delhivery could face trouble in replacing the revenue.

Delhivery and India’s logistics market

Industry overview

Logistics has been one such sector that suffered the wrath of pandemic. The devastating effects on the economy crippled this sector and stuttered growth. However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is now optimistic that things will improve and growth will be ~9% per annum from 2020-to 2025.

India observed a total spend on logistics is ~14% of GDP during FY20. This is significantly higher than in developed countries like Germany and the US, where the total spending is ~8% of GDP.

The average logistics cost per GDP among BRICS countries was 11%. In the case of India, the cost-share per GDP was 14%. The high cost of logistics can be attributed to an inefficient modal mixture, especially with the road segment.

The logistics market in India consists primarily of transportation and warehousing. Transportation accounted for 70%, or US$151 billion in FY20. Organized players accounted for only ~3.5% of the logistics market (road transportation, warehousing & supply chain services only) in FY20.

Organized players are expected to grow at a CAGR of 35% between FY20 and FY26 which will improve their share to 12.5-15% by FY26.

This shift is expected to be driven by the ability of organized players to offer integrated services, network, and scale-driven efficiencies and larger investments in technology and engineering, resulting in a higher share of wallet of customers.

Delhivery – Business outlook

Delhivery was established in May 2011 as SSN Logistics Ltd. and is India’s market leader in e-commerce logistics with a 20% market share and strong position in the partial truckload (PTL) post-acquisition of Spoton Logistics Private Ltd.

Over the last 10 years, Delhivery has established itself as one of the key players in the B2C logistics market. With the recent acquisition of Spoton, they will also look forward to B2B participation.

Currently, 70% of revenue comes from e-commerce business. B2B e-commerce involves two kinds of businesses, one is picked up from vendors and deliver to the e-commerce warehouses and the second is pickup from e-commerce warehouses and return back to the vendor. Many top players don’t enter the segment of last-mile delivery which is considered B2C.

Today, it delivers 40,000 to 50,000 orders a day and has customers such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, eBay, Amazon, Myntra, Jabong, and Healthkart, among others. The business model is asset-light where infrastructure and vehicles are leased which significantly decreases operational risk and aids in faster growth.

It provides an integrated platform of end-to-end logistics management including parcel delivery, part truckload, full truckload, and warehousing.

The business is currently loss-making and debt levels are rising. There is a dependence on external financing.

Delhivery – business segments.

• Full-Truck-Load (FTL) – A shipment where the truck is fully loaded before delivering to the customer. The space of the truck is fully utilized and the goods stay in the truck from the time of pick-up till the time of drop. The transit time is much less than PTL and LTL.
• Express Parcel – Parcel delivery services to 17,000 pin codes in India are currently executed under two categories. Consignments up to 10 kilograms and those which are considered heavy goods are dealt with separately.
• Cross Border services – This includes door-to-door, port-to-port express parcel services as well as air cargo to and from India. Their capabilities include an integrated network of express and freight solutions coupled with supplementary solutions of tech-enabled tracking, an in-house regulatory team for proactive clearance support, and a dedicated customer servicing team.

Let’s have a quick look at the players operating in different segments of the market.

Delhivery – Business model

Transportation and logistics businesses usually follow a hub and spoke model where a centralized hub exists. Goods are transported to smaller locations(spokes) for further processing and distribution.

The business model followed by Delhivery is that of a mesh network. They have been prioritizing it since FY14 which is demonstrated in the productivity which increased by ~50% from 25-26 shipments per day to 37 shipments per day. Mesh network is dynamic and changes based on surges in volume or hindrances in other channels.

Mesh Network emphasizes a higher proportion of point-to-point connections with dynamic shipment routes determined typically based on an automated algorithm. The Hub-Spoke Model provides less flexibility as the main node (hub) is centrally connected to multiple other nodes and this is where Delhivery gets an advantage.  

Engines of revenue growth

• Balanced presence across segments – Express parcels comprise 70% of revenue. Delhivery has a 20% market share in eCommerce volumes. There are about 18.6k active customers.
• PTL accounts for 10% of revenue. The business has an 8.3% market share in this segment.
• Truck Load contributes 6% to total revenue started in FY20. There are 449 customers and 1,850 delivery partners.
• Supply chain services add 10% to revenue with a focus on D2C e-commerce and omnichannel retail. There are about 71 warehouses and 139 active customers.

• Improved distribution spread – 1.1 mm tonnes were transported during FY21 through Spoton and Delhivery. The count of customers has increased by 4x during the last 3 years. This has reduced dependence on relying on major customers.

• Strategic acquisitions – Several strategic investments and acquisitions have been initiated over the last 5 years and this is expected to drive business growth. Delhivery expects to have a larger customer base and cross-border express service. Moreover, they’ve been focussing on automation and technological partnership to add value to enterprise customers.

Moats and strengths

• Over 80+ in-house applications to facilitate transaction flows – API is driven with an expectation of driving internal and external development.
• Infrastructure and networks have been a priority. 12.23 mn sq ft and access to 17,000 pin codes boast this capability.
• Operates in a dynamic mesh environment which helps in reducing touchpoints, and decision errors and makes the model more scalable and flexible.
• There are multiple customer touchpoints. 64% of the revenue is generated from customers transacting for 3+ years and 55% of the revenue comes from customers using services for over 2 years.

Possibility of capital misallocation

It seems that prudent decisions relating to financing activities are not being taken which may impact Return on Invested Capital (ROIC). Total borrowings till December 2021 were INR 370.7 Crores. The company had an adequate cash balance during the last 3 years to ensure timely repayment and saved the finance cost.

Delhivery plans to utilize INR 2,000 Crore for organic growth and INR 1,000 Crore for inorganic growth. It will be interesting to see the capital allocation as they are cash-rich and in a state to finance their investments.  

The Indian economy continues to get rewarded by the demographic dividend with India becoming the highest consumer of mobile data per month at 15.7 GB per person. This will be a boon for the e-commerce market and online shoppers will increase by 2x from 160 million in FY21 to 320 million in FY26. Moreover, the production-linked incentives of the government will boost the B2B segment with an increased direct-to-retail(D2R) and direct-to-customer(D2C) presence.

These structural changes in the consumption story require reliable logistics as an enabler and Delhivery as a key role to play.
