ladellbetts46 - TripAdvisor Day tour to Cliffs of Moher and others Three friends and I did the day tour and it was incredible. The Cliffs of Moher and the general "greeness" throughout the trip were sights that I will never forget. However, what made the trip truly spectacular was the humor and leadership of our guide, John Kelly. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable…
shanja - TripAdvisor Professional and fun I did the Cliffs of Moher tour, together with my husband and my mother in law. All was perfectly timed and the bus driver, Valentine, was amazing. He gave us a lot of info, he was professional but at the same time fun and entertaining. We were very happy and we definitely recommend the company.
chlorophyllenvy - TripAdvisor Cliff of Moher with Dermot - AMAZING! We had an absolutely amazing experience with Paddywagon. Our driver Dermot was exceptional, in every way. The cliffs were just amazing, breathtakingly so. The trip was long but loaded with history and enchanting tidbits about that beautiful country and its history. We were honestly trilled and it was…

7-Day Great Atlantic Adventure Small Group Tour Tour

7-Day Great Atlantic Adventure Small Group Tour

I had an incredible week on the Overland Great Atlantic Adventure tour! I went as a solo traveller in my 20s and, despite being nervous at first as the rest of the group were all travelling in pairs, had the best experience I could’ve asked for. We all had a great time together - I found the tour perfect for couples, family, friends and solo travellers alike. Our tour guide David was amazing, very kind, friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure the tour worked for everyone. If you join an Overland tour, you’ll be lucky to have David as your guide, he’s the best! All of the B&Bs/hotels were of great quality with breakfast included every day. The van is very comfortable and has plenty of space for a small group, much better than a huge coach full of 60 people (in my opinion). There was a fair bit of driving but it is inevitable with how much ground is covered. The places we visited and activities were all incredible. The only slight negative I have is that sometimes there were activities on the itinerary that we simply didn’t have time for - e.g. a 2.5 hour hike at the cliffs of moher, and with so much packed in you really don’t get much time to see some places. For example, we arrived in Westport around 7:30pm and left before 9am the next morning, but again that is inevitable with so much packed into such a short space of time. My highlights of the trip were kayaking in Dingle (I absolutely loved Dingle in general and am very glad we had 2 nights there) as well as climbing Croagh Patrick on our last day! The climb was tough but I would definitely recommend it if you’re able - an amazing experience. All in all I’m so glad I booked this trip and truly had the time of my life, I would definitely recommend Overland!

Just finished our 7 day tour with Finn. It was the best tour I’ve been on since leaving Australia two months ago to travel around Europe, Morocco and Ireland. The knowledge Finn has about his homeland was exceptional and his witty informative commentary had everyone’s attention. His recommendations were spot on and his willingness to help us to get the most out of trip was second to none. I would highly recommend this tour with Finn. ❤️thanks Finn you made it all worthwhile. It was fantastic! Our Travel Manager, James Creegan was excellent. He kept us ontrack the whole tour. Love his accent. Its obvious he is from Dublin. His knowlege of places, history, people, music was outstanding. He took us to a couple places off the beaten which I appreciated very much. We met some nice locals which made the experience even better. I would love to go on another of his tours again! Kris was a great tour bus driver. He made it into places I didn't think possible. He got us to our destinations safely. He and James, are very nice guys. I would go anywhere with James and Kris. I have dreamed about coming to Ireland all my life. This tour met and exceeded my expectations.

Sean was a perfect guide to have for our trip...knowledgeable, witty, and a great driver! He did a nice job of drawing people into conversation about the trip and what we were seeing. Sometimes it was challenging for me in terms of the amount of walking required...as I have an injury that affects my mobility. But Sean did his best to accommodate me by getting me closer to the site or checking to see if a wheelchair was available at certain locations. Lee drove us to our first location and was also an excellent gracious guide. I was grateful he allowed for a photo stop at Castlebar where my ancestors were from. That wasn't on the schedule...and meant alot to me!

Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland Tour

Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

There really aren't proper words to describe how incredible this tour was. My wife and I returned nearly 4 months ago and we have thought and talked about this trip nearly every day. We saw so many magical, mystical, emotion-evoking things that it's hard to even comprehend. From ancient ruins where High Kings were crowned, to watching passersby while having great food and drinks at a street side cafe, to walking along a serene riverfront, to sipping tea while watching the sunset from a castle, to enjoying superb cocktails with new friends in an amazing library bar. And, that, was just the first day! Experiences like feeling gale force winds against your face, as you stand next to a lighthouse on top of rocky cliffs that plunge down into the cold North Atlantic, are followed by strolls down winding streets lined with quaint shops, before ducking into a pub to enjoy some of the best musicians, fine ales or whiskies, delicious meals, and the nicest, friendliest people in the world. The accommodations were perfect and allowed us to get a good night's rest everywhere we went. And, the included breakfasts were sublime and filling, which was needed for days full of activities. Activities like walking through morning fog so thick that you could barely see your outstretched hand, before the fog began to lift and we were treated to the breathtaking views from the Cliffs of Moher along with the sounds of buskers playing the uilleann pipes. Just to start the day. We trekked through lush forests to see pristine waterfalls, lochs, mansions, and the haunting Muckross Abbey, believed to have inspired Irish author Bram Stoker in his writing of Dracula! We traveled the scenic Ring of Kerry, visited Molly Gallivans to learn about the history of weaving woolen sweaters and their importantly identifiable patterns, and even sample some locally made honey mead and poitin (Irish moonshine)! We walked barefoot on beaches, saw Clydesdale horses, sang songs, shared stories, and had the most amazing time. If you're a Star Wars fan reading this review, then I haven't even told you the best part. While some members of our group chose to stay on land and tour Valentia Island, we took a small boat, optional tour, out to the Skellig Islands (you know, where Rey and Chewbacca went to find Luke Skywalker in hiding)!!! We saw thousands of endangered birds that use one of the two islands as a sanctuary, and were joined along the way by a pod of many dolphins racing with our boat and jumping out of the water all around us! Cows, sheep, horses, cows, sheep, cows, and sheep. Did I mention cows and sheep? Ireland is a relatively small country. It's only 175 miles wide and 300 miles long. It has a population of 5 million people. It also has 5.5 million sheep and over 7 million cows. Wow! I haven't even mentioned Galway, Clonmacnoise, Puck the Goat King, the Charlie Chaplin statue, the Ford Model T statue, the scenic towns of Dingle and Lahinch, many more lighthouses, and so much more! All along the way, we learned a lot about the history and culture of this beautiful country from our fantastic tour guides, Andy and Diarmuid. You guys ROCK! We can't wait to visit again!!!

Cliffs of Moher Tour

  • Duration: 1 Day
  • Location: Cliffs of Moher
  • One Tour per Coach

Located on the west coast of  Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher consist mainly of beds of Numarian shale and sandstone. The oldest rocks can be found at the bottom of the cliffs. These deposits have been set down over the last 300 to 400 million years.

As a person who has been there often, as you look out over the cliffs, lightly coated with sea-spray watching hundreds of birds fishing your soul will swoon. The sheer abundance of wildlife can make the geological facts and figures seem trivial. For me, it’s more about just looking, watching and listening. You will experience the majesty of the Cliffs of Moher and enjoy amazing photo opportunities. This tour is really all about the holistic experience and what the Cliffs awaken and stir inside you.

Cliffs of Moher Bus Tour

The driver/guide.

Our driver will advise you about the best areas to take a wander. If you want to see the Puffins or head to a quiet spot just ask your driver the way.  It is easy to avoid the hustle and bustle of the tourist centre and enjoy a quieter experience at the Cliffs of Moher.

This trip also includes a stop at the Burren, a Special Area of Conservation. This is more a facts and figures place, it’s just that kind of a landscape. It is a bare, barren rocky place that’s the translation of Burren. On first glance that’s what it appears to be. A lunar landscape almost. Just land of exposed limestone rock, sweeping out in long beds known as ‘clints’. In between these beds are narrow, deep gullys called ‘grykes’. These grykes often have grass growing inside them, disguising their depth – so be careful.

On strolling for a few minutes over these clints, you will begin to notice little flowers poking their heads up here and there. Unusual flowers. Some of these flowers appear in the tundra of Siberia, and others hale from the Mediterranean.  Mystery surrounds the exact way these often sweet smelling buds reached the Burren. All we know is that they grow side by side, sometimes curling around one another in this barren landscape. This is thanks to the unique limestone pavement, providing a lime-rich soil while also holding onto the suns heat like a huge thermal blanket. Limestone absorbs heat over the day, long summer days in Ireland’s northern latitude, radiating it overnight and generally staying cozy for months on end.

The Best Way To See The Cliffs Of Moher (+ Parking Warnings)

By Author Keith O'Hara

Posted on Last updated: January 25, 2024

The Best Way To See The Cliffs Of Moher (+ Parking Warnings)

If you’re looking for the best way to see the Cliffs of Moher, this guide should come in handy.

I’ve visited Clare’s famous cliffs 20+ times over the years and have seen them from the ‘main’ access point, the two coastal walks and the sea (each has its pros and cons).

Located in the beautiful Burren region, the Cliffs of Moher stretch for an impressive 13km and stand proudly above the Atlantic at 702 feet in height .

Below, you’ll find everything from how to avoid getting shafted on Cliffs of Moher parking costs to things to do nearby.

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before visiting the Cliffs of Moher

cliffs of moher map

Although a visit to the Cliffs of Moher is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

Pay particular attention to the point about parking/ticket prices, as you can be easily fooled into paying much more than you need to.

1. Location

You’ll find the Cliffs of Moher, Ireland, in County Clare , on Ireland’s West Coast. They’re a stone’s throw from Liscannor village and Doolin .

Always avoid the cliff edge. The ground is VERY  uneven in places, the wind can be incredibly strong and, sadly, tragedies have happened where people have fallen from the Cliffs of Moher after getting too close to the edge.

You have several different Cliffs of Moher parking options , but they’ll be dependant on you/your groups fitness levels along with what kind of experience you’re after. I personally think the parking set up pushes people to pay more than is needed. See why (and how to save money) in the section below.

4. Ticket prices

Cliffs of Moher tickets vary price-wise . If you arrive up to the kiosk, it’ll cost you €12 p/p. If you book online, it’ll cost you:

  • €7 for a morning visit
  • €10 for an afternoon visit
  • €8 for an evening visit

5. Opening hours

Like most tourist attractions in Ireland , the opening hours for the Cliffs of Moher changes depending on the season:

  • Jan, Feb, Nov and Dec : 09:00 – 17:00
  • Mar, Apr, Sept and Oct : 08:00 – 19:00
  • May to Aug : 08:00 – 21:00

6. Getting the bus

If you’re not driving, you can get the bus to the Cliffs of Moher. It’s the 350 Bus Eireann route that leaves from Galway and that passes through, Kinvara, Ballyvaughan and Doolin, to name a few.

7. Best way to visit

The best way to visit the Cliffs of Moher will be dependant on your group. If you don’t fancy a long walk , head to the main visitor entrance. If you fancy a long ramble, there’s the Doolin Cliff Walk and the Liscannor Walk. If you want a unique experience, take the ferry from Doolin .

When it comes to the Cliffs of Moher parking, there are two different scenarios that take place.

I’m going to give you  examples  – legally, I can’t tell you to do the second one, so remember this is all hypothetical .

Scenario 1: You go the ‘official’ route

So, you and 2 friends want to visit Moher. You arrive up to the Cliffs of Moher car park and pay €36 in total.

This gives you access to the visitor centre, exhibition and O’Brien’s Tower. However, you just end up going to see the cliffs on their own.

A very expensive parking experience to say the least.

Scenario 2: You drop your friends off outside

Again, you and 2 friends want to visit the cliffs. When you reach the car park you’re sat waiting in the queue.

You let your friends out of the car and they walk to the entrance and wait for you. You pay €12 for parking and you head in to meet your friends.

You can’t go up the tower but the view from there is pretty similar to ground level. You pay €12 between 3 rather than €36 for your Cliffs of Moher tickets… Again, this is all hypothetical.

The best way to see the Cliffs of Moher if you want to avoid crowds

Although there are plenty of things to do in Clare , a visit to Moher reins supreme. The result? It can get  very  busy at times.

There are 4 ways to visit the Cliffs of Moher that’ll ensure you dodge the crowds.

Now, while the second and third points below are perfectly legal and all above board, the first is more than likely frowned upon .

Frowned upon, but I know lots of people that have done it.

1. Arrive before the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre opens

seeing the cliffs of moher for free

I’ve heard that the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher is very early in the morning, before the visitor centre/parking opens up .

According to a friend that’ll remain nameless, he recently made a trip to the Cliffs of Moher at 05:00 (the sun starts to rise from around 05:05 in Ireland in June).

The car park was closed , but he parked outside, not far from the barrier, in away from the road. He then walked to the Cliffs and had the whole place to himself as the sun rose.

Disclaimer: I’m advising that you don’t do this. If you did want to visit early in the morning, you’d have to ensure you get there very early to avoid blocking staff from entering the car park.

2. Arrive at Sunset

cliffs of moher at sunset

I’d argue that the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher is just before the sun sets . One October, myself and one of the lads (Mayo Declan) ended up in Doolin for a night, and managed to get up to the cliffs just before the sun started to set.

It was pretty damn special (see the photo above). In and around sunset at the Cliffs of Moher tends to be quiet . Now, when we were there it was Ireland’s off-season , so there was only a handful of people there, anyway.

However, I’ve spoken to a load of people over the years that have visited at sunset, and they said it was reasonably quiet for them, also.

Tour companies tend to visit the cliffs in the morning and afternoon , with few offering (I’ve only seen one) late evening trips. Well worth doing!

3. Cliffs of Moher boat tours

Cliffs of Moher cruise

Arguably the best way to see the Cliffs of Moher is via the sea on a boat tour , like this one from Galway or this one from Doolin (affiliate links).

You can climb aboard a ferry at Doolin Pier or Galway and you’ll sail below the cliffs. Out of all the ways that I’ve seen the cliffs over the years, this was the most unique, by far.

There’s another tour that you can do that takes you from Doolin to the Aran Islands . Then, on the return journey, you’ll sail below the cliffs.

4. Try one of the cliff walks

Doolin Cliff Walk

If you’re looking to visit the Cliffs of Moher for free, you can do one of the cliff walks .

Whack ‘ Cliffs of Moher Liscannor Walk ‘ into your sat nav. You’ll get parking here (it was €5 when I was here last) and you can take a handy 15 to 20-minute walk up to the viewing point across from Hag’s Head .

I tend to recommend this to people that have no other option but to visit at peak times and that want to avoid a crowd where possible (the Doolin Cliff walk is another good option!).

While you’ll still encounter plenty of people here during peak time, it’ll be  nowhere  near the number of people at the side near the main entrance.

Getting to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick

Galway City

  • Cliffs of Moher tours from Limerick:  This is a scenery-packed day trip from Limerick

  • Bus : You need to get a bus and train. It’d be handier to take an organised tour
  • Cliffs of Moher tours from Cork:  This is a full day tour from Cork with great reviews

Update: The Cliffs of Moher shuttle bus no longer operates

However, this is no longer running for some reason, which is a shame. However, you can still get a bus to the Cliffs of Moher with Bus Eireann ( see timetable ).

Cliffs of Moher FAQs (yes, a scene from Harry Potter was filmed here…)

harry potter cliffs of moher

We’ve received many different questions about the cliffs over the years (mainly relating to the Cliffs of Moher Harry Potter link…). I’m going to try and answer the most common below.

If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, just ask it in the comments section below this guide.

Was Harry Potter Filmed at the Cliffs of Moher?

Yes. A scene from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was filmed at the cliffs. Remember the scene where Dumbledore and Harry travelled to a cave to locate one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes? That was shot in one of the caves at the Cliffs of Moher.

Do you have to pay for the Cliffs of Moher?

No, you do not need to pay in to see the Cliffs of Moher. You do have to pay for the car park (€12 per person) and into the visitor centre (it’s free in if you pay for parking) but if you don’t have a car, it’s FREE to see the cliffs.

When is the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher?

If you can, try and arrive just before sunset. It tends to be quieter before the sun drops and, on a clear day, the view you’ll be treated to is out of this world.

How far of a walk is it from car park to the cliffs? This is a birthday trip for mother. Walking isn't her strong suit.

Hey Bonnie - if you park in the main Cliffs of Moher car park, it's around a 7 - 10 minute walk depending on pace. The ground is reasonably flat but there's a bit of an incline up to the wall where you'll get a view of the cliffs. I hope this helps!

The Cliffs of Moher, labelled as one of the top natural wonders in Ireland by Lonely Planet, are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, and for good reason.

With their dramatic cliffs towering over the Atlantic Ocean, they offer some of the best views in the country.

I’ve visited the Cliffs of Moher many a time, both as a child and as an adult, and I can tell you it never gets boring!

Whether you’re visiting for the views, the fresh air, or to spot some of the resident wildlife, you’ll be in awe of these spectacular cliffs.

Here is the complete guide to visiting the Cliffs Of Moher in Ireland.

About The Cliffs Of Moher

How to visit the cliffs of moher, cliffs of moher walking trails, day trips to the cliffs of moher, cliffs of moher boat tours, where to stay to visit the cliffs of moher, tips for visiting ireland’s cliffs of moher, faqs about the cliffs of moher, in conclusion.

The Cliffs of Moher, known as Aillte an Mhóthair in Irish, are located on the western coast of Ireland, in the Burren region of County Clare . A few Cliffs of Moher facts are:

  • They were formed over 320 million years ago, as waves crashing against the soft limestone rocks slowly eroded them into their current shape.
  • The Cliffs stretch for eight kilometers, (5 miles), and reach a height of 214 meters, (702 feet), at their highest point.
  • The Burren and Cliffs of Moher are a UNESCO Global Geopark .
  • The cliffs are home to a variety of plant and animal life, including seabirds like guillemots and razorbills, as well as rare wildflowers.
  • Over 1 million tourists visit the Cliffs of Moher each year.
  • The Cliffs of Moher have been featured in many films, such as The Princess Bride, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Snow White & The Huntsman.
  • Dogs on leash are welcome at the cliffs, and they even have a ‘doggy pit stop water station’ to keep them hydrated along the way.

Although the cliffs are known for their natural beauty, they are also the subject of many dark folktales.

The beautiful Cliffs Of Moher in Ireland

One popular legend tells the story of a woman named Mal who was obsessed with an Irish warrior, Cúchullainn. She followed him all the way around Ireland as far as the Cliffs of Moher, much to his dismay. By this point she had him cornered.

He tried to get away from her by leaping to a nearby ocean stack, and when she tried to follow, she lost her footing and perished in the sea below. This area is now known as ‘Hags Head’ in memory of poor Mal.

There are several ways to get to the Cliffs of Moher, depending on where you’re coming from, what your budget is, and how long you have to stay in the area.

1. By Car To The Visitor Centre

This is the most popular way to get to the Cliffs of Moher as it gives you the most flexibility in terms of timing, and stops along the way.

Approximate driving times from other counties are:

  • From Dublin: 3 hours
  • From Galway: 1.5 hours
  • From Kilkenny: 2.5 hours
  • From Limerick: 1 hour

Those arriving by car will most likely park in the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre car park.

The cost ranges between €7 and €10, depending on the time of day – book online for best prices. This includes entry to the Visitor Centre, O’ Brien’s Tower, and the use of the facilities. Children under 12 go free.

2. Hiking / Walking

One of my favourite ways to experience the wild beauty of the Cliffs of Moher is by hiking or walking along them.

It’s a great way to avoid the crowds that congregate around the main lookout points, and to really get a feel for the scale of the cliffs.

There are a few different walking trails in the area, ranging from easy to difficult. The Doolin Cliff Walk is the most popular, followed by the Coastal Walk.

More details on these trails can be found further down in this post.

Cycling to the Cliffs of Moher is another great way to avoid the crowds and really take in the scenery. The area is quite hilly with bendy roads; it’s not for the fainthearted!

Depending on your fitness level and where you’re coming from, there are several different routes you can take. The shortest route is from Doolin, which takes around an hour.

The longest route, if you’re feeling up for it, is a 6.5 hour loop from Ballyvaughan.

Find the best cycling route for you here .

For a completely different view of the cliffs, and by far the most unique way to see the Cliffs of Moher, a boat tour is a must.

You’ll get up close and personal with the cliffs, as well as see some of the seabirds that make their home there.

There are many companies who offer boat tours from the nearby village of Doolin, and longer day tours from Galway City . These range from 1 hour coastal cruises, to longer excursions that include stops on Inis Oírr, or some of the other Aran Islands .

More on these boat tours later.

5. By Day Tour

For those short on time, or who don’t want to deal with the hassle of driving and organising, a day tour from nearby counties is a great option.

I’ll share my favourite Cliffs of Moher tours a little later in this article.

Walking or hiking around the Cliffs of Moher offers a completely different experience than just visiting the lookout points. You get to explore the area at your own pace, avoid the crowds, and really take in the scenery.

how to get to Cliffs of Moher

Here are the most popular walking trails in the area:

1. Doolin Cliff Walk

Distance: 8km – Difficulty: Easy

This is by far the most popular walking trail in the area, taking you along the coast from Doolin Village to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre.

The walk is about 8km, and takes between 2 and 3 hours to complete. It’s a relatively easy hike with some slight uphill sections, but the terrain is largely even, and along a gravel pathway.

Along the way, you can appreciate stunning views of the cliffs, as well as the nearby Aran Islands. On a clear day, Loop Head and the Dingle Peninsula can even be seen in the distance.

If you prefer, you can opt to join a guided walk , where you’ll hear stories passed on from generation to generation, as well as learn the inside scope on all the most scenic and picturesque spots along the way.

The trail ends at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, where you can either choose to grab a taxi or shuttle bus back to Doolin if you don’t wish to walk the trail back.

2. Hags Head Walk

Distance: 6km –  Difficulty: Moderate

You can begin this trail either at the Visitor Centre, or at Hags Head – the southernmost point of the Cliffs of Moher. I recommend the latter as you can find private parking for just €3 at Hags Head.

Whilst it’s a shorter route than the Doolin Cliff Walk at only 6km, it can be slightly more challenging in places as it includes some steeper uphill sections.

Again, if you don’t fancy walking back the same way, you can take a taxi or public transport back to your car.

Alternatively, if you’re feeling adventurous, keep walking as far as Doolin Village. From Hags Head, it’s a 14km walk along the coast, which will take you around 4 hours.

You’ll certainly be ready for some lunch at McDermott’s Pub by the time you arrive in Doolin!

3. Cliffs of Moher Coastal Trail

Distance: 20km –  Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

If you’re looking for the hikes of all hikes to see the Cliffs of Moher, the 20km Coastal Trail, linking the villages of Liscannor and Doolin, is the one for you.

Completing the entire trail one way will take approximately 6 hours, so make sure to start out early in the morning.

The route takes you along some of the most breath-taking and unspoilt coastline that Ireland has to offer, where you can indulge in views of Galway Bay, Doolin, and the Aran Islands.

There are a few different sections to the trail, each with their own unique scenery and challenges. This route is best suited to seasoned walkers who won’t mind narrow pathways, farm lanes, flagstone steps, and steep inclines and declines.

4. O’Brien’s Tower Walk

Distance: 700m –  Difficulty: Very easy

Short on time, or just looking for a quick stroll around the area once you arrive at the Visitor Centre? Wander over to O’Brien’s Tower, just a few minutes’ leisurely walk away.

The round trip from the Visitor Centre takes approximately 30 minutes at a slow pace.

The highlight of this route is of course O’Brien’s Tower itself. Built in 1835 by Cornelius O’Brien who wanted to develop tourism in the area, it’s now a spectacular viewing point for visitors to the cliffs.

Climb to the top of the tower and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.

There are a number of day excursions available from Dublin , Galway, Cork , and Limerick that will take you to the Cliffs of Moher.

If you’re not keen on arranging your own transport, or don’t have a lot of time to spare, opting for a day trip is a great option. Some companies even offer combined tours that include a visit to the Cliffs of Moher as well as other popular attractions in the area.

how to get to Cliffs of Moher in Ireland

Here are a few of the best day trips to the Cliffs of Moher:

1. Cliffs Of Moher from Dublin

  • Cliffs of Moher tour including Wild Atlantic Way and Galway City
  • Cliffs of Moher, Kilmacduagh Abbey, Wild Atlantic Way and Galway
  • Cliffs of Moher and Doolin day trip

2. Cliffs Of Moher from Galway

  • Cliffs of Moher day trip
  • Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher including Cliffs of Moher Cruise
  • Cliffs of Moher and Burren day trip including Dunguaire Castle, Aillwee Cave and Doolin

3. Cliffs of Moher from Limerick

  • Cliffs of Moher day tour including the Wild Atlantic Way
  • Cliffs of Moher full day tour

4. Cliffs of Moher from Cork

  • Cliffs of Moher and more: Full day tour

5. Cliffs of Moher from Nearby Villages

  • Cliffs of Moher hike from Doolin
  • Private Cliffs of Moher hike with all hiking gear issued
  • The Cliffs of Moher driving excursion from end to end

There’s no view of the Cliffs of Moher quite like the view from the water.

You can take in the sheer size and scale of the cliffs, as well as enjoy views of the coastline, islands and wildlife from a whole new perspective.

Most of the boat tours will begin from either Doolin Pier or Galway City Docks .

1. Inis Oírr Island and Cliffs of Moher Ferry

This tour leaves from Doolin Pier and takes you on a 5 hour magical cruise to Inis Oírr, the smallest of the three Aran Islands.

After exploring the islands, you’ll enjoy a cruise along the Cliffs of Moher.

2. Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher Day Tour

This boat tour starts from Galway City Docks for a full day trip around the Aran islands and onwards for a cruise around the base of the Cliffs of Moher.

You’ll cruise past Connemara and the Clare coastline before spending 4 hours on Inis Mór – the largest of the Aran Islands.

The towns of Doolin, Liscannor, and Lahinch are all located within close proximity to the Cliffs of Moher and make for great places to stay if you’re planning on spending a few days in the area.

Doolin is a particularly popular choice for visitors as it’s well known for its traditional Irish music pubs and restaurants. There are also a number of things to do in Doolin for all types of travellers.

awesome things to do in doolin

My top pick of places to stay in Doolin is Elfin Cottage , a beautifully modern eco-cottage.

Lahinch is another great choice for those looking to stay near the Cliffs of Moher. The town is located on the coast, and has a number of surfing beaches making it the best place to stay if you’re looking to catch some waves.

I recommend this spectacular sea view bungalow for your stay in Lahinch.

Liscannor Village is located just a few minutes’ drive from the Cliffs of Moher and has a number of fantastic self-catering cottages available to rent.

I love this beautifully restored boat house , (yes it was originally a boat house!), just steps from the lively village.

There are a few things you should know before heading to the Cliffs of Moher.

1. Don’t Ignore The Safety Notices

At particular points there are railings and safety notices. This is for a reason – stay behind them! The cliffs are very high, and the drop is sheer. Many have been blown off the edge by strong gusts of wind in the past. It’s an absolutely stunning view, but respect the signs for your safety, and the safety of others.

2. Visit During Sunrise or Sunset

The best time during the day to see the cliffs is early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is low in the sky and casts a beautiful golden light on the rocks.

3. Be Prepared

Ireland’s weather isn’t all that reliable at the best of times and the weather at the Cliffs of Moher can change in a heartbeat. Be sure to bring warm clothes and rain gear, even if it’s a sunny day when you leave your accommodation.

4. Avoid The Crowds

The further away from the Visitor Centre you walk, the less people you’ll encounter. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to take in the view, head to the southern end of the cliffs.

5. Do Some Birdwatching

Bring binoculars if you’re into birdwatching. The Cliffs of Moher are home to a large number of seabirds, including puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes and razorbills.

Some frequently asked questions that come up about visiting the Cliffs of Moher are:

When is the best time to see the Cliffs in Ireland?

As the cliffs are located on the coast, the weather can be quite changeable. Pack a rain jacket, even if the forecast is good. It’s also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes as there are some uneven surfaces on some of the trails.

FAQ for Visiting the Cliffs of Moher Tours

How long is the day trip to the cliffs of moher.

Most of the day trip tours from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher are around 12-13 hours long. Although it is a long day, there are lots of stops and places to see, so the longest you’ll be on a bus/train in one go is around 2 hours. Most of the tours make quick stops for snacks and bathroom breaks so each bus journey isn’t too long.

Can kids take the tours?

Kids are welcome on all the tours, however, it should be noted that some of the drives are up to 2 hours in length so may not suit younger kids. It’s worth considering this before you book. Although most of the drop-offs along the Cliffs are fenced it’s still vital to keep a close eye on kids and make sure they stay on the path.

How much time do you need at the Cliffs of Moher?

All the tours include a minimum of 1.5 hours at the Cliffs of Moher and this is the perfect amount of time needed for exploring the Cliffs. It allows time to take in the views of the Cliffs of Moher, walk along the fenced sections of the cliffs and explore O’Brien’s Tower.

What’s the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher?

The Cliffs of Moher are beautiful throughout the year and are open every day excluding December 24-26. Irelands weather is notoriously changeable but tends to be milder during the months May-August. These months would give you the best chance of milder weather and nicer conditions for visiting the cliffs. Our favorite time to visit the Cliffs is during mid-summer (July) when the weather tends to be warmer and the views a little better.

Are there bathrooms at the Cliffs of Moher?

Yes, there are bathrooms at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. If you need to use them make sure you do so before you visit the cliffs as it can be a long walk back!

What should I wear when visiting the Cliffs of Moher?

The weather in Ireland is very changeable and it’s possible to have 4 seasons in one day, even in the middle of summer. In addition, the Cliffs of Moher are exposed to the Atlantic Ocean so even on a calm day the wind can make it very chilly.

We recommend packing some layered clothing for your visit, including a raincoat. If the weather forecast is poor we highly recommend packing a rain poncho or a full set of wet gear. Leave the umbrella in your hotel -it tends to be too windy to use an umbrella at the Cliffs!

Is there a lot of walking at the Cliffs of Moher?

You can do as much or as little walking at the Cliffs as you like. The cliffs are located around 150 metres from where the tour buses drop off. It is a short flat walk suitable for everyone.

For those who wish to explore the cliffs more, you can walk to the south viewpoint which is around 1.5km along the cliffs, or explore O’Briens tower to the north. The views along all sections of the cliffs are epic so it really doesn’t matter where you go.

Shopping Centre, Day Trips & Tours Ticket Kiosk, Saint Stephen's Green, Dublin 2

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Rosemary ★★★★★ in the last week During our stay in Dublin we took two of Wild Rover's Tours. They were both extremely organized and the guides and drivers were all amazing. I can't say enough good things about these tours. They maximize the trip so you get the most out of your time. The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Both of our bus drivers were extremely safe drivers. The buses were clean, comfortable and … More had USB plugs easily accessible. Before we booked the tours we sent a few inquiry emails which were answered very promptly. Everything was amazing from start to finish. A bit about our Tours - The Cliffs of Moher, Atlantic Edge Ocean Walk & Galway (Rory was our tour guide & Brian was our Bus Driver) - This was SOOOOOOOO well worth it. The Cliffs were superb and you have 2 hours to explore them. The Atlantic Edge Ocean had amazing views and the countryside we drove through was picturesque. In Galway we walked to Merchant Row and had a lovely lunch at the Kings Head (this was one of the recommendations Rory gave us and it did not disappoint.) Rory was funny, charming and balanced our tour time with history, funny antidotes and was so helpful at every opportunity. Brian was a great driver and I felt completely safe in his care. Our second tour was - Giants Causeway & Belfast City Day (Barbara was our guide & John was our bus driver) - What a lovely day. If your a GoT fan, you will get to see several locations used in the show. You will have a choice to go to the Titanic Museum or the Black Cab Tours (I highly recommend the Taxi tours). The locations were amazing, the scenery was lovely and we had more than enough time at each of the locations. Barbara was fun and played a lot of music which certainly got us into the mood at each place we went to. She answered a lot of questions and John even spoke Gaelic for us! He was a great and safe driver.
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ 4 weeks ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • laura taylor ★★★★★ 2 days ago Truly the best and most enjoyable experience on our trip to Dublin. Liam and JP were exceptional in their knowledge of the regions visited and making everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. I wouldn't hesitate in booking another Wild Rover tour in Ireland again! Stop scrolling and simply book it!
  • Marine MALINGUE ★★★★★ in the last week Really nice experience I truly recommend it! Peter, our driver offered us a safe trip and Ian our guide was very nice and friendly, I particularly appreciated Glendalough and the sheperd demonstration which was a very good surprise! You can buy something to eat during your stop at Kilkenny and there are many opportunities to go to wasrooms during the excursion, everything is perfectly organise and … More you really have enough time at each place you visit! It definitely worth the price!
  • Brenda Burrows ★★★★★ a week ago We went on the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic museum tour and can thoroughly recommend it. Great driver (Krishnan) and excellent tour guide (Una). Good mix of Irish history, folk lore and culture served up with humour and practical tips. Beautiful coastal scenery.
  • Sara Mouyass ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago Absolutely informative and lovely tour to the Cliffs of Moher! Both our driver and guide were really nice people, and respectful of our morning tiredness! Our guide, Yvonne, gave absolutely useful and historical info as well as fun stories/facts when that was needed. I'd recommend Wild Rover anytime if you'd like to spend an amazing journey across Ireland! 😊 Thank you!
  • Helen Lim ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago Thank you very much to Dave and Marko for a fantastic Dramatic Day Tour to North Ireland (from Dublin) to Titanic Experience at Belfast, Dulunce Castle and Giant's Causeway which allowed me to tick off my bucket list. Although this is a long day trip, it is worth every minute for around 2 hours at the UNESCO World heritage Giants Causeway which is an ancient creation around 60 million years ago, … More created by volcanic fissure eruptions which layered the surrounding area with 40,000 interlocking basaltic columns. It is mind boggling and magical to be able to scramble over and explore such a natural phenomenon. Do tread carefully as the basalt columns are uneven and slippery. We took the Red trail which overlooks the polygonal column formations, and midway turn left to some stone stairs which lead you down to the hexagonal shaped basaltic columns by the coast. This route is around 40 minutes one way. Then you can walk back up 15 mins by the easier Blue trail. You can opt to pay EUR1.20 or GBP1 to take the shuttle bus back up, which runs every 20 minutes. Go early to the Tour meet up venue before 6:45am as they let early birds queue up for their seats (except for 1st 2 rows reserved for elderly and pregnant guests). The lovely scenic atrim coast ride is spectacularly scenic. Dave is a humorous guide who explained about the sites, and joked, and kindly helped to take a few pictures, for us. The historical 500 years old Dunluce Castle remnants (set against a steep cliffside of the North Atlantic ocean) also make for gorgeous photographs. The Titanic Experience is a 2 hour interactive and immersive time, in a modern and expensive building. Marko is a safe and efficient driver. Highly recommended great Day Tour, to make new friends from other countries. We were blessed with mostly sunny / a tad cloudy but no rain weather. Kindly tip your guide and driver generously please. Helen
  • Chang Liu ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago We did the Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour with Kiera and had the best time. Kiera was simply one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had! She explained the Irish history so thoroughly and clearly; she might as well be a history professor! She’s also very funny and so, so friendly. All the shops and restaurants she recommended in Galway were spot on. The tour’s organization was quite smooth and we can’t … More complain a thing. Highly recommend wild rover tours.

ireland bus tour cliffs of moher

I have 8 days to spend in Ireland and flying in from UK.

I will be using public transport only.

Please advise if this itinerary is practical:

Fly into Cork . Spend 2 days

Take bus to Galway . Spend 3 days( 1 in town and 2 countryside)

Take bus to Dublin . Spend 2 days. Fly out the night of day 8.

I plan to take guided tours to explore the areas surrounding Galway.

Rest other days will be exploring each city’s local points of interest.

Please share feedback and recommendations on:

- am I doing too many cities in 8 days?

- Should I spend more time in Dublin instead of Galway? OR squeeze in a day trip to Kilkenny instead of 3 days in Galway

- recommendations on things to see in each city, considering I will have a pram or baby carrying.

Any advice on traveling alone with a baby will be greatly appreciated 😊

I'm sorry, I think very little is practical.

4 of your 8 days are travel days, on public transport, just getting from A to B

Then you plan to take day tours. Have you found a company that will take young children? Bus tours and 'smalls' are not compatible. a fractious bored child who wants to get down to play is fun for nobody.

I'm also wondering how long you will have been in Britain for both you and your son to have readjusted your time clocks.

The whole enterprise sounds like an endurance test, sorry.

I have already sounded negative enough, but feel I need to warn you that accommodation will be very scarce, at this late stage, so you are possibly looking at high prices and or places others don't want to stay.

Some questions so that we can help you make it work.

If not, give us an idea of what you would like to do by day as I'm fairly sure bus tours are out.

Please don't be put off by my response, I mean it to be constructive.

I will second ski-er’s post, please rethink your plans, it will be miserable for your little one.

Thank you so much for the candid response.

Nothing in Ireland is booked yet as I was planning on spending all 4 weeks in UK.

I am good with just doing 2 cities. Any advice on which ones to select?

The only criteria to select things I would like to do for this trip are that they need to be baby friendly. 😊

I read on some forums that there is public transport to Cliffs of Moher where I can take the pram. Is that correct?

Tours is a tricky one I agree, but I tried to buy tickets for an infant, and I was able to go to check out, hence assume that it might work.

Please, don't even think of going to the cliffs of Moher, especially with a baby or one in a pram,

Thank you for letting me know.

Would you please recommend sighta that I can comfortably do with the baby in a pram or a carrier in these two locations?

Thank you in advance.

I wouldn’t worry about the Cliffs of Moher with a baby in a pram. A nine month old is hardly likely to crawl towards the edge at a rate nobody notices until it’s too late. And you probably wouldn’t get a pram into the dangerous areas where people have fallen. Pushing round a pram may diminish the experience for the person pushing it, but that applies in so many places.

I don't think this trip is practical I'm sorry to say. It's not just the baby, although I think having a 9 month old with you will add to the challenges you face. It's more that it's short notice now for accommodation, and also that I can't see how you will be able to do all the things you want to do in the time you have.

Cutting down to two bases will help, but if you haven't done so already I think you need to look at where you could stay and how much it's going to cost.

Good luck. It will be really tough going but it's amazing what you can do when you really want to do something!

It might prove useful to take the 8 month old baby on an overnight trip by public transport closer to home as a trial.

Traveling Ireland by bus. With a dozen banjo players. And jokes. What could be better?

Ireland – The conference room at the Old Ground Hotel was crowded with newly assembled musicians and traveling tourists - and 17-year-old musician Flynn Whitmore was a bit nervous. One of the most respected tenor banjo players in Ireland, Enda Scahill , had just played a finger-flying, knee-bobbing jig with other well-known traditional Irish musicians at the meet-and-greet session and Scahill invited the music students to leave their seats and come up and play.

“I didn’t want to play,” said Whitmore. “But … Enda told me to get my banjo. So, I did.”

That first day, we were strangers. But just a few days later, Whitmore would venture out onto a jagged fang of the Cliffs of Moher, hundreds of feet above the sea spray of the Atlantic Ocean, to draw notes out of his four-string in the whipping wind while the rest of us tourists and newfound fans marveled at how much his confidence had grown.

Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.

This was no ordinary bus tour through Ireland. This was a mashup of a dozen banjo-playing musicians of all levels and abilities, mixed in with an audience of music-loving tourists, all packing together the same bus to explore the Emerald Isle together, one note, Guinness and Irish joke at a time.

'I hear the biggest city in Ireland is growing. It’s Dublin.'

So how did I end up on this bus − swaying and bobbing through the narrow lanes that separate endless farms of sheep and cows − with a dozen banjo players?

Wild Atlantic Music Tours is a travel company that provides the uncommon experience of exploring Ireland with star musicians leading the way, quite literally on the same bus with tourists. Sometimes it’s a fiddler or a guitarist . Sometimes it’s a band . The point is to experience Ireland through its best storytellers and musicians, and to observe and appreciate the history of this mystical country through the music. Wild Atlantic Music Tours takes its buses to big cities like Galway as well as remote villages with little more than a church, a soccer pitch and a pub. Guides Eddie King and Robert Hanrahan are like Irish cousins showing us the best places to eat, drink and tune out our worries with a harp, a bodhrán and a banjo.

This particular Wild Atlantic Music Tour − in October, 2023 − was the first of its kind featuring Scahill, the former front man for the popular CeltGrass band We Banjo 3 which, during its decade-long run, drew thousands of fans to its performances at Milwaukee Irish Fest . Scahill had experience in these tours, going on them with We Banjo 3 years ago; last year, he was ready to do one on his own, especially for other banjo players and music-minded tourists.

I don’t play the banjo. And I didn’t know anyone − other than Scahill, a little bit. But I was determined to go. In 2016 my cousin invited me to visit Irish Fest for the first time and I joined her, mortified, in the fifth row at the Harley-Davidson stage of a We Banjo 3 concert, embarrassed to make eye contact with the performers. This was not my scene. I listen to hip-hop, K-pop, dance, R&B. Banjos? I was sure I'd hate it.

But We Banjo 3 just brought so much energy to the stage and their versatility between cover and original music was unlike anything I'd ever heard before. Their sound was big and pure and danceable and I loved them, and so did Milwaukee, and Wisconsin − so much so that in 2018 I wrote two stories about We Banjo 3, and that’s when I first talked to Scahill.

More: Irish Fest regular We Banjo 3 uses music to shine a light on mental health

Right before the pandemic I took one of those DNA tests that confirmed my German-Polish Milwaukee South Side roots, but there was a surprise: Holy eejit, I’m Irish, too! Not a lot, but I vowed to embrace the shamrock enthusiastically. In 2023, with We Banjo 3 on hiatus, Scahill had focused on his solo work, his Irish music podcast Inside the Banjoverse and a new passion. He started teaching banjo-playing students all over the world on his banjo-lesson Patreon account . A Wild Atlantic Music Tour just made sense (and he's doing another right now).

That bus took us all along the middle-west coast of Ireland, with visits to the Aran Islands, Doolin, the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara, the Burren and the international and charming city of Galway. We learned to walk with the sun for good luck at the temple on the Inis Oirr, that County Clare is the home of traditional Irish music, that Doolin has both pine and palm trees, that the Burren in spring has both Alpine and Mediterranean flowers , and that and some scenes from The Banshees of Inisherin were shot in a perfect tiny old smokehouse with a low roof and uneven floors.

'He’s Scottish - he’s not allowed to ask for water at a bar. They’ll take his passport.'

We tourists came from all over and so did the banjo students: Ireland, Scotland, the U.S. Young Flynn, whom we all adopted, is from Australia. And yet even with all the beauty of exploring Ireland's patchwork green countryside and pursuing the end of every rainbow, incredibly, Scahill managed to get more than a dozen performers to join our musical motley crew on tour. They are all renowned musicians who left us mesmerized:

Mark Donnellan (fiddle), Brian Donnellan (concertina), Aodán Coyne (guitar and vocals); Micheal Ó hAlmhain (whistle), Eoin O'Neill (bouzouki), Manus Maguire (fiddle); Sorcha Costello (fiddle), Diarmuid Ó Meachair (melodeon, accordion); Christy Barry (flute, spoons), James Devitt (fiddle); John Carty (fiddle, banjo), Fredda Hatton (harp, concertina), Julie Langan (fiddle); Liz Kane (fiddle), Mirella Murray (piano, accordion); Brian McGrath (banjo), Mick Conneely (fiddle), Damien Quinn (bodhran).

These musicians, along with the bus tour banjo students, played master classes in the morning, or sets in the afternoon at pubs, or full concerts at night. Some were private concerts just for us; others drew packed crowds, like at the Crane Bar . That meant that music filled several hours of the day. And every session got better than the last as the group got more comfortable playing in public and playing together.

'Do you know how to have $1 million after 10 years playing the banjo? Start with $2 million.'

We got history lessons, too, on the music and the instruments. Barry explained that jigs were different than barn dances and peasant music, that music and dancing were the religion of their grandparents and that musicians played for the dancers.

“That’s what got your energy up was the dancing,” said Barry, brilliant blue eyes shining.

Ireland’s Young Musician of the year in 2022, Diarmuid Ó Meachair grew up with Irish as his first language and sang an Irish language song about a man who loves drink alcohol. Sorcha Costello brought the crowd to a standstill with her fiddle, and a massive line of new fans formed to buy both of their CDs, just to support these young talented people and music. (Never mind that most of us customers don’t own a CD player.)

And on the cross routes in between the pubs and sites, bus life on Wild Atlantic Music was never boring or confining, and the guides never dragged out a ride, as most were between 1-2 hours. In fact, the bus provided stress-free downtime to hear Enda, Rob and Eddie outdo each other with Irish stories and Dad jokes, or just close the eyes and rest. The view of the Wild Atlantic Way, one of the world's longest coastal drives, must be seen in person; no camera will ever do it justice.

We were all moved by the tour, the history, the culture, the love of a country that has taken in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. But it might have changed one young man's life.

'Tá áthas orm' - means, 'I am happy,' in Irish

Do you believe in destiny? Whitmore is Australian, but his parents chose to name him Flynn, an Irish name; they gave him the middle name, Mackenzie, which is Scottish. Crazier still, it was just a few years ago that Flynn took up banjo − in rebellion. His mom Bronwyn was determined to make music part of his education. The Woodford Folk Festival is a 45-minute drive from their home, and she plays the harp; dad plays the digeridoo.

So, Flynn’s first choice was drums. “Mum said, 'something with notes,'” said Flynn.

Flynn’s second choice was electric guitar. “'Something acoustic,' said mum."

“Funnily enough, I then picked ‘banjo’ − just because I knew we wouldn't be able to find a banjo teacher. It was a complete joke,” said Flynn.

But the scarcity of Irish traditional music in Australia wasn't a problem. After seeing The East Pointers at Woodford, Flynn came across Scahill’s banjo video lessons on Patreon and took off with it. His talent, drive and enthusiasm for the music became apparent within minutes of meeting young Flynn. Everyone on tour was telling Flynn he’ll be performing on stages in no time.

But playing 'Mouse in the Kitchen' with new friends on tour is one thing for Flynn. When Whitmore met Carty , he was awestruck.

“I didn’t want to whip out my banjo − I just respect him so much.”

Whitmore was content to play as much as he wanted, but also sit back and appreciate the music as a fan, too.

'I tried work. But I found it took up the whole day'

Scahill wanted his bus tour to be a one-of-a-kind experience. After he endured the pandemic, which shut down We Banjo 3's touring for more than a year, he had had enough of that (like the rest of us). His home country of Ireland is a treasure and being here is a privilege. So, more than anything, Scahill wanted his banjo students, who play songs with titles and lyrics that reference Irish cities, towns and people, to come with him, tour Ireland, and actually play in those towns, and meet those people.

“When they come to Ireland, and are playing with the best musicians in the country, the whole purpose of the tour is immersive and it's inclusive,” said Scahill. “You don’t have to be at a 'level'; or worry if you’re not good, or enough you’ll get pushed aside.”

It doesn't mean he's grooming professionals, necessarily. He wanted immersion, and that goes both ways. Scahill started performing – on stage – at the age of 10 and his career has taken him on months-long tours all over the world, often to sold-out theaters or packed festivals. With all his musical connections, he was sure to invite guest musicians to join the tour, and the students, because he knew they would have fun playing with, and embracing, banjo students students and hobbyists. There's not much room for ego on this bus.

Perhaps the best part of the tour was listening to Scahill talk about the challenges of being a musician, of dealing with success, and fallouts; of dealing with critics, and comparisons. He's achieved a lot in his career, but also seems bolstered by getting back to the roots of music, by teaching others how to play. A side benefit was for the other tourists like me, who don't play, but now better appreciate the banjo and the music overall.

Maybe young Flynn will be on stage one day; maybe not.

“I want him to figure it out himself, which he will,” said Scahill.

But Flynn's passion for the banjo, for being around music-minded people, for hiking in Ireland's woods − and crawling out on its precarious cliffs − rekindled the wanderlust in all of us.

Young woman dies after falling from cliffs on visit with friends

The Cliffs of Moher.

A young woman died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in southwestern Ireland yesterday.

Emergency services arrived at the scene of the Co Clare cliffside at around 1.20pm following reports a woman in her 20s had fallen.

She was reportedly a college student not from Ireland.

The Irish broadcaster  RTÉ reported that she was visiting the 214-metre-high tourist attraction with three friends when she lost her footing.

A rescue helicopter located the woman but emergency officials struggled to access the location.

Lifeboat crews recovered her body after 3pm and the body was then taken to Doolin Coast Guard station where the woman was formally pronounced dead.

The Cliffs of Moher from above.

The body will be taken to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem examination will be carried out.

A garda spokesperson said: ‘Gardaí and emergency services conducted an operation following reports of an incident at the Cliffs Moher this afternoon.

‘The body of a woman, aged in her early 20s, was removed from the water by emergency services.’

In January 2019, a 26-year-old Indian national fell to his death at the Cliffs of Moher while taking photos

Anand Goe, described by family as ‘calm and a peaceful soul’, was taking in the views when he took a photo and fell.

Health and safety officials have urged people traipsing around coastal cliffs to steer clear from the edges and remain vigilant.

‘Getting the perfect selfie is not worth taking a risk with your life,’ one official said last month .
