• It is possible to do the Buggy and Sandboarding Tour and catch the Peru Hop bus to Lima on the same day.
• Huacachina is the only naturally formed desert oasis in South America!
• Peru Hop is the only bus company to go directly into Huacachina. Other companies only go as far as the nearby city of Ica from where you must take a taxi in order to get to Huacachina.
• Huacachina is as popular with local Peruvians as it is with international visitors and has a great atmosphere, especially on weekends. This in turn means that booking accommodation ahead of time is advisable around weekends and holidays, especially if private rooms are required.

• Comfortable clothes
• Lightweight trousers to protect the knees should you wish to go down lying down.
• Closed-toe shoes recommended (no flip-flops)

Buggy and Sandboarding FAQs

Is it possible to do the Buggy tour on the same day that I will depart Huacachina for Paracas/Lima at 18:30pm?

Yes, it is possible. The Buggy tour starts at 16:00pm and lasts for 2 hours, so you will be back at around 18:00pm. At certain time of the year the tour is moved 30minutes later to ensure you catch the sunset on the dunes, this is done in co-ordination with the Peru Hop bus. If you are booked on the bus, we will wait for you to come back from the tour even if there are any delays.

Is sandboarding safe?

Sandboarding is safe provided that you are responsible, so take it easy as each year there are accidents from people going too fast. You will not come out winning versus a wall of sand.

Are the buggies Safe?

Yes, the buggies of our recommended operator are extremely safe. Their drivers will make sure you have a lot of fun but never take any risks, and all seats have a seat-belt to ensure you are strapped in safely. Not all operators have safe modern buggies so it is important to be careful when booking tours.

Can I drive the buggy myself?

No, it is not possible to drive the buggies. All of the drivers are certified, you cannot drive a buggy through the dunes without certification and special permits. You will understand why once you have done it!

I want to spend longer Sandboarding, can I hire boards per day?

Yes. For those wishing to hop off in Huacachina and perfect their board skills there are a number of places in town where you can hire the boards yourself by the hour or half/full day.

I was late and missed my tour. Can I change it for tomorrow?

Unfortunately, if you turn up late and miss the sandboarding tour, the operator will still charge the full price for the NO SHOW as your seat was reserved in the buggy and not sold to anyone else. If you would like to book the tour again for the next day then you can do it, but you will have to pay a second time. Tours can be changed up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure.

We were then taken to the desert in these super cool dune buggies and the adventure began! And when you think your adrenaline is at its peak... then you go sand boarding and as bonus... desert 🏜 inner tubes! Once at the camp, we had an exclusive tent, a bathroom 🚻, excellent lounge music, grilled dinner (salmon and chicken) and we slept like babies. In the morning we were driven to the camp were we had towels, soap, shampoo, showers and breakfast waiting for us (eggs, coffee, fresh juice). We cannot wait to bring more family and friends. It was absolutely incredible. The dune buggy and sandboarding was so much fun, and the sunset was spectacular. All the staff were so friendly and nice. They picked us up from the bus station and dropped us off at a restaurant for lunch before the tour. The first part was fun and seemed like the standard everyone does, the glamping however was amazing, the campsite was very well decorated and was so cozy and welcoming. The food and wine was great and when the lights was turned down, the stars were covering the sky. My only suggestions would be a beer/drink for the sunset part, but might be to shaken up from the ride. Remember a battery to charge phones etc, there is a plug at camp, but nothing in the tents. They booked the bus tickets for us to/from Lima. We got in early in the day and our driver from the bus station (also arranged by company) took us to the lagoon since walking around the town is not included in the actual tour, and back to the HQ later so we could meet up with the group and start the actual tour. On the tour we were able to dune buggy, sand board, sand tube, watch the sunset, and then we’re driven to the camp site which was set up very nicely. We started with a meat/cheese/fruit board and a bottle of wine from the region, and then went to another area for a good dinner of grilled veggies, chicken/fish. Then we sat under the stars and finished the wine, and jokingly asked if there was dessert - next thing we know the drivers who had taken families back to the town that were not spending the night brought us back chocolate!!! William our driver & guide was awesome, and took us on some very fun dune buggying, then sand boarding, and lastly donut riding in the desert. When contacted the agency they just informed that there's nothing they could do (because it would be more expensive for them), they were rude and they just wanted to cancel everything and make us lose a day of our vacations on that! We will start at the meeting point Carola Lodge Huacachina . We will go with the driver to the dune port that is located a few meters from the lagoon.

We will board the buggies and begin an unforgettable experience over the Ica desert. During the ride in the sand buggies we will observe the sand formations and a beautiful desert landscape.

When we arrive to the top of the Ica dunes , our instructor or guide will explain us about the safety and styles to descend using regular boards (sandboarding), after a brief practice, we will start with the exciting descent over small, medium and big dunes.

Before finishing the tubing tour in Ica, we will have time to stop at a natural viewpoint to take pictures of the sunset .

We will return to the starting point in Huacachina itself where you can stay longer to enjoy the beautiful charm of the oasis of America.

For the past 12 years, the desert oasis of Huacachina has served as the site of one of the most popular adventure tours in South America: the dune buggy and sandboarding tour. People of all ages - including kids, teenagers, and adults - all visit Huacachina and climb into a 4-wheel-drive dune buggy driven by a professional driver. We can offer this tour as a group tour with other travelers, or privately. Half the tour is riding in the dune buggy, up and down the dunes at fast speeds. And the other half of the tour is a chance to try the adventure sport of “sandboarding”. This is just like snowboarding, but instead of snow you will be boarding on the fine-grained sand of the desert. If you aren’t athletically talented, no problem! Just lay on your stomach on the board, and go “sand sledding”. This is faster, lots of fun, and doesn’t require any patience or ability. The dune buggy and sandboarding tour is an amazing thrill ride. But this is more than just a thrill ride: the gigantic sand dunes are beautiful, surreal and mesmerizing. A tour into the desert feels like an “out of this world” experience, almost like visiting the surface of another planet. DEPARTURE TIMES AND TOUR DURATION:

The PUBLIC DUNE BUGGY TOUR starts every day 10 AM, 1 PM and 4 PM*. The tours that start at 10 AM and 1 PM are only one hour long, because of the heat in the desert during the day. The 4 PM tour is 2 hours long. We strongly recommend that all visitors to Huacachina take the 4 PM tour. This is by far the best time of day to take the tour. * During some months of the year, the last tour of the day is at 4:30 PM. This is usually in December - February. A PRIVATE DUNE BUGGY TOUR can start at any time you wish, although we still recommend afternoon tours, such as 3 PM - 4 PM, or 4 PM - 5 PM if possible. The private tour lasts for one hour. Let us know if you prefer a very fast tour, so that it is like a thrill ride or a rollercoaster, or you prefer a slow and relaxing tour.

CAN I DRIVE A DUNE BUGGY, OR RENT ONE?

No. For safety reasons, only the professional drivers can drive a dune buggy. This is not just for your safety - the desert is full of areas where people are sandboarding, and if you drive through these areas quickly you could easily injure someone. Plus, handling a dune buggy requires several months of training to do it properly: it is not easy at all.

Ready for an adrenaline-inducing adventure in the Peruvian desert ? Bounce over the dunes of Huacachina in a high-speed buggy and experience sandboarding!

Having been picked up from your hotel in Ica at 3:30 pm, you'll be taken deep into the magnificent Huacachina desert , located just a few miles outside of the Peruvian city of Ica.

When we arrive, the guide will tell us all about the history of the famous Huacachina Oasis before we set off on our  buggy adventure through the desert. While your  dune buggy bounces over the sand , you'll have the opportunity to photograph the captivating natural landscapes of the desert. As you reach the highest points of the dunes, formed by the movement of the winds, you'll be able to spot the  peaks of the Peruvian Andes  on the horizon.

After exploring the eastern part of the Peruvian Andes, we'll stop at a cluster of dunes to go sandboarding , one of the most popular activities in the desert! Surf down the golden dunes on a special board and soar across the sand as if you're flying... an adrenaline rush you'll never forget!

At the end of the sandboarding activity, we'll head back to the Huacachina lagoon across the beautiful Peruvian desert.

Finally, we'll drop you back off at your hotel in Ica at 6:30 pm.

Only select the option "Tour with pickup" if you're staying in hotels located in the center of Ica , since pickup is not available for hotels outside of the center.

If you're staying elsewhere, you must select the option "Tour without pickup" and make your own way to the  El Bamboo Hotel  at the Huacachina Oasis for 3:45 pm. The option without pickup will finish at 6 pm.

About the Tour

The Dune Buggy and Sandboarding Tour will take you through the Huacachina dunes as if you were on a roller coaster ride. Buckle up and hold yourself tight because you’ll be going up and down these towering sand mounts at high speed!

Our professional drivers will make sure that you have a fun but also safe experience . We’ll make a few stops on the way so you can contemplate the beautiful scenery of the Peruvian desert, take some pictures, and later continue to the most remote locations in Huacachina once and for all to tame the dunes on a sandboard.

We’ll start with the shortest ones, so you don’t feel scared to try them. Our driver will have all the equipment so you can slide through the dunes like an expert or just roll down like most of us did the first time.

Be daring! You can either lay flat on the sandboard or if you’re feeling brave enough, try to slide down while standing, but trust us, it isn’t as easy as it looks! We’ll drive around to find even more challenging dunes, it’ll be up to you if you’re eager to try it or not.

Once you’ve had enough sand in your shoes to walk, we’ll head back to Huacachina, but first, we’ll find the perfect spot to watch the sunset from the dunes.

What to Bring?

Make sure to pack according to this adventure! Keep in mind that the dune buggy and sandboarding ride will get sand all over you, so bringing a change of clothes would be the best if you need to continue with your trip. Here’s our packing list essentials:

- Light clothes. Temperatures can reach over 30 °C during this time of the year - Protect yourself from the sun. Apply sunscreen every 40-50 minutes and use sunglasses and a sunhat. - Bring a pair of runners or comfortable shoes. If planning a day of excursions, these should definitely be on your packing list. - A small backpack. Pack small for this adventure and bring only the necessary.

Don’t wear flip-flops or sandals because you will probably lose them during the sandboarding activity, and you surely don’t want to get your feet burned with the hot sand of the desert!

I Dream of Huacachina Deserts | Peru

Signing up for a dune buggy tour in Huacachina isn’t something I’d normally do. I’ve engaged in some pretty dumb “adrenaline activities” over the years (see: snorkeling tours), and am always pretty skeptical of anything that promises adventure in a 2-hour time slot. But, with dune buggy tours and sandboarding in Huacachina going for just $12 per person, I figured it could be worth the gamble.

You see, Huacachina is describedly tiny. The town itself it doesn’t have much on offer besides very average restaurants and hotel pools. The town’s placement amidst massive white dunes, however, is awfully remarkable. Most everyone in town will be trying to sell you on a dune buggy and sandboarding tour, and you know what? You ought to say yes.

How can an activity that is so potentially cheesy so entirely awesome? In a 12 seater dune buggy, our group navigated unexpected dips and crashed over ambiguous horizons. Our driver had driven the route so many times that it felt more like a roller coaster than a risky car ride. The sandboarding stops would have been quite fun if we came prepared with a board with bindings of our own, but stranded with the flimsy velcro variety, we raced face first instead.

Where is Huacachina?  You can get to the desert oasis on an easy 4-hour bus ride  (Lima to Ica), and from Ica to Huacachina is 5km by taxi.

Hotels & Tour Operators in Huacachina

Desert Nights  | Desert Nights runs both a hostel and an ecocamp where guests can hang by the pool sleep at the base of the dunes. Besides running a hotel, they also offer regular departures of sandboarding and dune buggy tours. It’s possible to reserve in advance, but you might as well just rock up and get your tour same day.  Doubles from $44.

How much does a dune buggy and sandboarding tour cost?  Dune Buggy Rides and Sandboarding in Huacachina is a lot cheaper than you might expect. A 2-hour tour is around S/ 40 per person ($12) + a S/ 3.60 per person ($1) entry fee.

Other Tips:  The boards provided on the tours can be kind of lameand hard to ride. If you’re excited about the idea of sandboarding and have a bit of surf or snowboard experience, rent one with bindings in town and bring it along for the ride!

Huacachina: The 'Only Desert Oasis In South America'

The little village of Huacachina is a small yet dramatic oasis that is bounded by sand dunes on all sides. It is located just three miles out of the city of Ica in southwestern Peru. It attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year. Huacachina has a permanent population of around a hundred people.

• Dune Size: Up to 1,600 feet or 500 meters

According to the locals, the water and mud of the area of Huacachina are therapeutic. It is popular for both locals and tourists to bathe in the waters and cover themselves in mud. People claim it helps cure ailments like rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, and arthritis.

While the resort at Huacachina is mostly intended for local families, it has become more and more popular for international tourists. Tourists are drawn not only by the stunning oasis but also by sand boarding on the surrounding sand dunes. These sand dunes can reach heights of as much as 1,600 feet or 500 meters.

Flying is not an option to get to Huacachina (there is no airport at Ica) so the main public transportation there is by bus. Tourists can choose the 5-hour-long public bus or the more comfortable Peru Hop bus . Peru Hop is the only bus company offering buses directly from Lima to Huacachina.

Sandboarding & Riding Dune Buggies At Huacachina

The top activity to enjoy at Huacachina is sandboarding on the famous dunes rising around the oasis. Tourists ride the dunes in dune buggies driven by experienced local guides. The sand dunes here feel never-ending.

Sandboarding is thrilling and exciting and much cheaper than snowboarding (a comparable yet far-flung destination for sandboarding is Ninety Mile Beach in New Zealand ).

One of the great aspects of sandboarding is that it is suitable for all skill levels from beginners to experts. Beginners ride the sandboards down the dunes on their stomachs, while the pros show off riding the sandboards like snowboards.

The other top activity is taking dune buggy rides (these buggies are locally called ' areneros '). Some tours combine these two activities with a mix of dune buggy riding and sandboarding. The best time to take the tour is at 4:00 pm so that they can enjoy sandboarding as the sun sets.

Apart from the oasis of Huacachina, the area around Ica is famous for its vineyards and pisco. Pisco is the national drink of Peru and is an alcoholic cocktail.

Pisco is used as the base liquor to which lime juice, simple syrup, ice, egg white, and Angostura bitters are added. It is a very refreshing drink that many tourists love to try while exploring Ica, the home of pisco.

Local Legends About The Formation Of The Hucachina Oasis

The oasis has its own legend. The legend says that it was created by a beautiful native princess who came and underdressed to bathe. Looking into the mirror, she saw a male hunter approaching from behind. The startled princess then fled but left behind her mirror that then turned into the lake.

Like many legends, there are more versions than one of the story. Another version states that the princess fled the pool of water she was bathing in that then became a lagoon and the folds and then the folds of the mantle she had that streaming behind her became the sand dunes that dominate the area. It is said that the princess still lives in the oasis as a mermaid.

Yet another story says that the lake is formed from the tears of a young woman mourning the death of her beloved (a young warrior). When another warrior saw her, she jumped into the lake of her own tears and became a mermaid.

Legends aside, the oasis lake has been formed from the seepage of water from underground aquifers. Modern well-drilling started to threaten the oasis and since 2015 water has been pumped to replenish the water, keeping the site beautiful for residents and visitors alike.
