Grand Canyon National Park tours & vacations

Light streaming through clouds over the Grand Canyon on a sunny day, Arizona, USA

'Grand' doesn’t cut it. Mind-blowing? That’s more like it.

At 18 miles wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long, nothing can ever prepare you for the vastness of the Grand Canyon. The views from the lookouts along the rim will take your breath away, but we like to go a little deeper — like hiking into the canyon depths and seeing the burnt-orange cliffs soar above you, falling asleep under spectacular night skies , and learning about the park's Indigenous history to connect with this ancient landscape. Make sure your camera's fully charged... you won't be able to put it down.

Grand canyon national park travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s an 18-mile wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long gorge carved by the Colorado River over 5-6 million years. Scientists estimate that humans have lived there since the last Ice Age.

How do I get to the Grand Canyon?

The closest airports to the Grand Canyon are Las Vegas and Phoenix, but you can also fly into Flagstaff (a one-hour drive from the South Rim) or Salt Lake City (about seven hours away by car). Public transport is limited, so the best option is to drive or join us on a tour.

Getting around the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon has a free shuttle bus around the South Rim. The shuttles take you to the best viewpoints which are inaccessible to private vehicles.

There is also a Trans-Canyon-Shuttle service between the North and South Rims between May and October.

Guided bus tours also operate in the park, as well as taxi services between the South Kaibab Trailhead, Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan/Airport.

When is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon?

The best time to visit the Grand Canyon in terms of weather and avoiding huge crowds is between March and May, and September through November.

During the peak season (June-August), thousands of tourists flock to the park for the summer vacation. That being said, all hiking trails and park facilities are open, so it's the best time to experience all the park has to offer.

Temperatures drop in the winter and it snows in some areas, but it’s a great time to visit as there’s hardly anyone around and you’ll have the trails and views mostly to yourself.

What should I wear to the Grand Canyon?

No matter what season you visit the Grand Canyon, bring a sturdy pair of hiking boots or trainers with good grip, light and comfortable layers, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a fleece, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Also, make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks to refuel throughout the day.

What animals live in the Grand Canyon National Park?

Some animals you might encounter include desert bighorn sheep, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, mules, gray foxes and bears. There is also a diverse range of reptiles, amphibians and birds.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in the Grand Canyon?

Your cell phone will probably have coverage near the park’s main tourist hubs, but there will be little or no coverage once you start hiking past the canyon rim.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Best Grand Canyon Tours

Self-guided vs. professionally guided tours of grand canyon.

Many outdoor experiences can be appreciated without a tour guide. But please don't let your visit to Grand Canyon be just "a giant hole in the ground" or even "a great place to just take a selfie". Most visitors will forego the Grand Canyon tour and just visit the park on their own. If this is the only time you will be here, do yourself the favor and go on a guided tour if you can. Grand Canyon's immense history, geological diversity, and scope is truly too difficult to comprehend even for those who spend decades researching, studying, and exploring it. It would be impossible to appreciate how incredible it really is in one visit, but going on a guided tour is a good start. Whether you're coming from Phoenix, Flagstaff, Sedona or Las Vegas, there is a tour company to get you there safely and conveniently. Any Grand Canyon tour is worth putting in that bucket of Life Experiences.

Usually, visitors headed for the South Rim - the most popular area of Grand Canyon National Park - frequently embark on tours from Williams, Flagstaff, Sedona, or Phoenix aboard a comfort-ride van or coach, particularly when the tour is taken in place of transportation. Popular South Rim tours also include the Grand Canyon Railway, which departs Williams for Grand Canyon Village daily, and 30 to 45-minute helicopter tours, flying from the Grand Canyon Airport near Tusayan over the South and North Rims and back. Grand Canyon tours from Las Vegas are typically destined for Grand Canyon West, an area of Hualapai Nation located outside the National Park and home to the glass Skywalk attraction . The South Rim is a less common destination for visitors from Las Vegas. Tours from Las Vegas commonly include transportation by van, coach, helicopter, airplane and Jeep (or a combination therein) and range in price from under $100 per person to over $600 per person. It really just depends on the tours you choose.

South Rim Grand Canyon tours to the South Rim most commonly depart from Flagstaff, Williams/Tusayan, Sedona, Phoenix and sometimes Las Vegas. Popular South Rim tours also include the Grand Canyon Railway, which departs Williams for Grand Canyon Village daily, and 30 to 45-minute helicopter tours, flying from the Grand Canyon Airport near Tusayan over the South and North Rims and back. South Rim tours tend to be more traditional with fewer gimmicks than tours offered from Las Vegas. Going to the South Rim of Grand Canyon allows for more exploration and natural beauty.

West Rim Usually, tours to Grand Canyon West, an area of Hualapai Nation located outside the National Park and home to the glass Skywalk attraction, originate from Las Vegas. Grand Canyon tours to the West Rim commonly include transportation by van, coach, helicopter, airplane and Jeep (or a combination therein) and range in price from under $100 per person to over $600 per person. Tours to Grand Canyon West revolve around the Skywalk with optional side trips to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. In a vacation comprised of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, and the Skywalk, it's pretty cool to see what Mother Nature can create as well. There's no competition between man-made feats versus one of the Seven Wonders of the World. That becomes very obvious when you look into the Grand Canyon for the first time.

The North Rim is a very remote destination; there are no single-day commercial tours to the North Rim at this time (although many whitewater and smooth water rafting trips begin north of the North Rim at Lees Ferry.) Instead, book a multi-day "Grand Circle" trip that includes the North Rim, a river rafting trip, or a custom tour. With a handsome travel allowance, many tour operators can create a custom tour for you with a combination of van, coach or air travel.

For a one or two day trip, we highly recommend you drive yourself to the North Rim. You could take a shuttle, but there are very few companies that provide Grand Canyon shuttles to the North Rim, but those that do depart from Flagstaff and offer services at prices ranging from $158 - $200 per person (although custom options are available for additional rates.)

Although not a tour to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, there is a 30-minute air tour from Las Vegas to Bar-10 Ranch, a decidedly remote 'off-the-grid' vacation lodge and ranch located on the Arizona Strip outside the National Park but only 9 miles from a portion of the North Rim, located 80 unpaved miles from St. George, UT. You'll find this and the aforementioned tours right here on theCanyon.com.

Grand Canyon National Park

This morning, you will meet your private guide for your full-day hike along the Bright Angel Trail. Following the Bright Angel Fault, you will take in Indian petroglyphs, sweeping vistas of the canyon and Indian Gardens; a true oasis in the desert. A delicious picnic lunch is included and will be enjoyed surrounded by the beauty of the canyon.

The Grand Canyon

Today will be full of adventure. In the morning, you will meet your guide for your small-group open-air jeep excursion through the Grand Canyon. Discover Desert View Drive and all its spectacular viewpoints while learning about the geology of the world's most well-known canyon. After a leisurely lunch, you will drive to the Grand Canyon airport for your scenic helicopter flight. Admire the Kaibab National Forest, North Rim, the Colorado River and the mystical Dragon Corridor, all from the air with some of the best pilots and most knowledgeable guides in the area.

Solomon Temple & Desert Palisades, Grand Canyon National Park

Leave the Grand Canyon behind and make your way further north to Lake Powell. You will arrive at the spectacular Amangiri, a luxury desert retreat on the outskirts of Lake Powell. The day is yours to enjoy, and you might like a trip to the spa to unwind after a few days of adventure at the Grand Canyon.

Amangiri, Canyon Point

Spend the day exploring Lake Powell on a small-group kayak tour of the lake. By taking a kayak tour, you can reach spots that the boat can't, allowing you to reach the more peaceful sections of the canyon. Paddle past sheer cliffs and out in open lake water, with impressive canyon views all around.

Cruise boat on Lake Powell

Your last day is reserved for complete relaxation. Indulge in a luxurious spa treatment, relax by the pool or go on a gentle hike on one of the hotel's many backcountry trails.

I was so lucky to find Ben and his company. From start to finish, Ben was professional, courteous and an absolute pleasure to work with! My clients said this was truly one of the best experiences of their lives and praised Ben and his entire operation! I cannot thank Ben and All-Star Grand Canyon Tours enough for their services and it was worth every dollar my clients spent! TOP NOTCH, thank you so much!

Just a quick note to tell you that our family had a lifetime memorable hike in the Grand Canyon last friday with Jason. He was fantastic and we would book with you again and will recommend you also. Thank you so much for all your help. We were very pleased and inspired!!

- Mary & Jerry, Iowa

We had unbelievably great time... truly epic ! Everyone can't stop talking about what a wonderful and memorable experience we had individual and collectively. You and your team made it happen and we are grateful. Thanks to you, Jason for making this the most wonderful adventure we've had (so far)!

- Igal, Canada

We had a fantastic day on the tour to the Grand Canyon with Joel. He was so knowledgeable, friendly and fun. We definitely feel we had the best tour and day possible. The van was very comfortable and the lunch was great. (We noticed people on other tours looking enviously at our spread with the attractively set out food, table cloth, plates, etc.) THANKS for giving us a memorable experience.

grand canyon luxury tours

*Please Note:    In Flagstaff, we provide complementary pickup for all hotels within Flagstaff (city limits only).

This is the ultimate when it comes to full-day coach tours from Sedona or *Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon.

Your Grand Canyon Tour starts off with a scenic ride from the Red Rocks of Sedona, through Oak Creek Canyon (one of the top 10 scenic drives in America) and towering Ponderosa Pines of Flagstaff. After meeting our Flagstaff guests, we drive past the dormant volcanoes that make up the San Francisco Peaks, on our way to Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Your first views of the Grand Canyon will take your breath away. You will be looking at one of the wider sections of the canyon, which will give you an appreciation for the magnitude of this Wonder of the World. From the South Rim you'll gaze 14 miles across to the North Rim. You'll visit the only point where you can see the Kaibab Suspension Bridge and see glimpses of the mighty Colorado River in several spots far down below. You can also gaze all the way across to the north rim. After your first view of the canyon, you may select to go for a walk along the Trail of Time, or head over to the Grand Canyon Village to explore various famous historical buildings and views.

grand canyon luxury tours

We stop along the way at the best vistas the Grand Canyon has to offer. Your knowledgeable guide will make sure you get to see the most magnificent viewpoints on the south rim. One of our superb views along the way is a stop at Grandview Point. This transitional point between the East and South Rims of the Grand Canyon offers both the open views of the Colorado River Gorge afforded at the East Rim, as well as the butte-filled views for which the South Rim is famous. You'll end your day with views of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River at Desert View. Climb up to the top of the Watchtower Observatory for magnificent panoramic views of the Grand Canyon. The Watchtower Observatory is one of the crowning achievements of architect Mary Jane Colter.

grand canyon luxury tours

At the end of the day, we'll make a stop at the Historic Cameron Trading Post, originally built in 1916. You will have time at Cameron to shop at one of the finest places to shop for authentic Native American souvenirs. You may also visit The Gallery, home of many breathtaking pieces of fine and historic Native American Arts and Crafts. You'll view the western edge of the Painted Desert as you relax on your way back from the Grand Canyon.

* Please Note:   In Flagstaff, we provide complementary pickup for all hotels within Flagstaff (city limits only).

Throughout your journey with us, you'll enjoy interesting, informative, and entertaining narration from your guide. Our most popular way to take our guests to experience the Grand Canyon.

Luxury Grand Canyon Tours

grand canyon luxury tours

If you're looking for an unforgettable luxury experience, a Grand Canyon tour is the perfect option. There are many different tours to choose from, so it can be tough to decide which one is right for you.

In this article, we will discuss the top four luxury Grand Canyon Arizona tours –we'll give you a brief overview of each tour, and let you know what makes them special. So, if you're ready to explore one of the most beautiful places on Earth, keep reading!

The Best Luxury Tours

The Hoover Dam is one of the most impressive engineering feats in human history. When you tour the dam, you'll learn about its construction and how it has helped to shape the landscape of the American West. You'll also get to see the massive turbines that generate electricity for millions of people.

If that's something that interests you and you want to give your Grand Canyon tour a historical touch, this is the tour for you. When you book this tour, we'll pick you up from your Las Vegas hotel at 7:00 AM. You'll have to sacrifice some sleep for this tour, but by the time it ends, you'll agree that it was worth it.

During the tour, you'll get:

  • A walking tour on top of the Hoover Dam
  • Unlimited snacks
  • Unlimited drinks

Our guides will also show you some hidden spots that only the locals know about. Plus, you'll skip the park shuttles and the long waiting lines that come with them.

The tour ends at 8:00 PM, so you'll need to dedicate an entire day to it. Because this tour departs daily, it’s easy to choose a day that's convenient for you.

  • Grand Canyon VIP Half-Day Tour

If you don't want to wake up at 7:00 AM, consider this tour. Grand Canyon private tours from Las Vegas are a treat—we'll pick you up at 10:00 AM directly from your Las Vegas hotel, and you'll be granted a quick entry into the Grand Canyon without having to wait for the park's shuttle service. In addition, you’ll get:

  • A photo stop at the Hoover Dam, so you won't miss out on it completely

This tour also departs daily, so you can easily plan it around your schedule.

  • Two-Day Grand Canyon Antelope Canyon Tour

If you have a little more time to enjoy nature, consider the two-day Grand Canyon Antelope Canyon tour. The Antelope Canyon is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and it's definitely worth a visit.

This tour includes:

  • The Grand Canyon National Park
  • Horseshoe Bend
  • Lower Antelope Canyon

Just like the previous tours, you'll get unlimited snacks and drinks. This tour also includes a one night hotel room stay and a light breakfast for the first day.

  • Three-Day Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Antelope Canyon, and Monument Valley Tour

Last but not the least is a three-day tour that will allow you to explore:

  • The Grand Canyon
  • The Bryce and Zion national parks
  • The Antelope Canyon
  • Monument Valley

Monument Valley is particularly special because it was the setting of some of the most iconic American Western films. In addition, you'll get the usual perks our tours offer plus some extras, including:

  • Two lunches and one dinner
  • All national park entrance fee
  • Two nights in a hotel room

Unlike the other tours on this list, this tour departs weekly, so make sure to plan it well in advance. It's also a more expensive option since it's a longer tour with extra features.

Final Thoughts

These are the best luxury Grand Canyon tours that MaxTour offers, and we can say with confidence that you won't be disappointed with any of them. So, what are you waiting for? Book your tour today and get ready to have the time of your life!

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Our guide Jade was fantastic. We paid extra for the tour of Antelope Canyon and we thought it was worth it. We got some amazing pictures there. The visits to Zion, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon were incredible. There are a variety of trails to chose from. Hikers of all levels can find something that they would enjoy. We would highly recommend.

Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.
We had a great time on our tour. It was jammed pack full of fun and information. Our guide Patricia was the best. She knew so much history about the states we travelled to and the parks we visited. I would definitely recommend this tour and Patricia.

My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!

Matthew (CEO) was great. As issues/challenges arose (which they inevitably do) Matthew addressed them, and provided options/alternatives, which he presented to the group and the group came to a consensus. A suggestion for Management/Tour Operator, The "meeting" with a Native American who was to talk about his/her Native American culture, should be given "guardrails" and stay within their "Lane". There are those who do not share the presenter's same political viewpoint as the presenter and the presenter should respect that his/her audience may have differing political viewpoint(s) and stay away from brining politics into their presentation. Again Matthew (CEO) was a great ambassador for the Tour Operator and we would definitely take another tour/trip with Matthew!
It was phenomenal! Sights, hikes, people, food, enhanced our journey.

Arizona's Premier Glamping Outfitter

Grand canyon glamping tour, helping you plan the perfect grand canyon vacation.

“Glamping” is the term used to combine Glamorous and Camping, which is exactly what you will experience after a full day of exploring the Grand Canyon with your personal guide, allowing you plenty of time to fully explore the hidden and lesser visited areas of the Grand Canyon at your own pace.

The uniqueness of touring with Arizona Luxury Expeditions is that it’s “your tour,” so you can decide how much time that you would like to spend at each location and destination that we visit.

With Arizona Luxury Expeditions, we do not have any set schedules or time constraints because it’s “your own private tour”.

Glamping in our Expedition Tents just outside of the expansive Kaibab National Forest, you will enjoy solitude and serenity located near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Upon arrival to the Grand Canyon you will have the whole afternoon and evening to explore and hike with a professional guide to some of the lesser known areas of the Canyon. This not your regular sight-seeing agenda, as we bypass the crowds and lead you into areas to have your own unique and personal experience, at one of the worlds most spectacular Natural Wonders. This is luxury camping at its finest.

All of our guides have a passion for the geology, plants, animals, and history of the Canyon, and love to share their knowledge with our guests. After spending the extra time with us, you will leave with a true appreciation of just how special and extraordinary the Grand Canyon is.

We can also integrate optional activities into your tour, such as mule and bike rides along the rim, as well as helicopter tours over the Grand Canyon!

Enjoy Your Grand Canyon Tour in Style

After a full day of exploring the Canyon we will arrive at your camp to a welcoming campfire as your Luxury Expedition Tent is prepared and outfitted with comfortable seating, dresser, side tables, charging station, with elevated mattresses dressed with warm flannel sheets, thick comforters, and wool Pendleton blankets. Also for the cooler nights, we equip each tent with it's own portable heater.

As you relax by the roaring campfire recounting the amazing events and sights of the day, your dinner will be prepared and then served in your own private (and heated if needed), dining tent. After your meal (of filet mignon, pan fried trout or barbecued chicken and ribs with all the fixins - you decide) you can return back to the coziness of the fire to enjoy some Dutch Oven apple crisp and s'mores as you enjoy the brilliant stars in the incredible Canyons night sky before turning in for the evening.

So don’t just see the Grand Canyon, ”Experience It” while Glamping near the Grand Canyon National Park. Enjoy the ease and comfort of touring with Arizona Luxury Expeditions, spending the extra time creating unforgettable memories of one of the Jewels of the National Park System and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world.

We offer one or more nights for your unique Grand Canyon experience and the memories you want to create. It's your choice!

Grand Canyon Railway Luxury Parlor Class Day Trip to the Grand Canyon

grand canyon luxury tours

Visit the Grand Canyon Railroad at the Williams, Arizona Railway Depot

Arriving at the Grand Canyon

The train arrives at the historic 1910 Grand Canyon Depot. It is among the three remaining log depots still in operation in the United States. Buildings like the El Tovar Hotel, Hopi House and Bright Angel Lodge salute arriving guests as they pull into the station and disembark from the train. Set unobtrusively among the landscape, Grand Canyon Village gives no hint of the majesty that lay beyond. Guests have over three hours to explore the most distinctive chasm in the world.

Freedom Tour at the Canyon

Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon you may participate in a narrated motor coach rim tour to the most scenic overlooks of the canyon to enhance your visit. Guests are escorted to vistas like Mojave Point, Pima Point, The Abyss and Hermits Rest. The Freedom Tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours and works around the train schedule to maximize your time at the canyon. A Buffet lunch is available at Maswik Lodge for an additional charge.

Coach Class to the Grand Canyon South Rim

Step aboard Grand Canyon Railway for a trip to the Majestic Grand Canyon you’ll never forget. Travel in a classic streamliner-era coach that gets you to the canyon and back with style and grace. Enjoy comfortable bench-style seating in the air-conditioned 1950’s-era passenger cars as the train makes it’s way across the beautiful Northern Arizona countryside. The train offers kaleidoscopic views of the San Francisco Peaks and rolls through valleys adorned in wild flowers, dense pine forest, high desert plains and small canyons.

The excitement begins at the historic 1908 Williams Depot. Before the train departs you can enjoy a wild west shootout featuring the Cataract Creek Gang in an outdoor theater, visit the free railroad museum or browse through the gift shops.
