Elden Ring Seamless Co-op Mod Guide

My guide will cover the the features, quality of life changes and installation process of Seamless Co-op in Elden Ring.

  • 200+ Hours in Monster Hunter World.
  • 200+ Hours in Fallout New Vegas.

threads

FromSoftware games always had one of the most active modding communities. From Dark Souls 3 Convergence mod to Dark Souls Nightfall project, I have seen some of the most insane mods done for a videogame. My guide covers the latest addition to one of the best FromSoftware community mods, the Seamless Co-op mod for Elden Ring .

  • The Elden Ring Seamless Co-op Mod removes multiplayer limitations and connectivity issues.
  • Defeating a boss doesn’t restrict gameplay with friends, and sessions can be resumed.
  • A debuff prevents repeated deaths in a session.
  • Play with three friends instead of two, and use Torrent in co-op with the mod.
  • To install, download from Nexus Mods, extract to Elden Ring folder, set the session password in cooppassword.ini, and launch “launch_elden_ring_seamlesscoop.exe.”

What is Seamless Co-op In Elden Ring?

3 player Co - op

Seamless Co-op is a co-op mod that allows you and your friends to play the game from start to finish without the game putting any restrictions. Explore The Land Between with your friends without the game kicking them out after you take down a boss.

Elden Ring’s own multiplayer can sometimes be tedious with connectivity issues and the game’s restrictions on the player. In my experience, the Seamless Co-op mod solve all of those issues.

This mod is developed by LukeYui, also known for his work on Sekiro Online and Blue Sentinels. It brings all those features and quality-of-life changes to multiplayer you might’ve initially expected from Elden Ring.

Features & Changes In Seamless Co-op Mod

There are a lot of changes Seamless Co-op makes to the game’s multiplayer system, which I have discussed below:

  • Session continues if the host or player dies, respawning at the last site of grace.
  • Play with friends even after defeating area bosses with the Seamless Co-op mod.
  • Fog barriers restricting player movement are removed in the mod.
  • Summon Torrent in multiplayer and explore Elden Ring more conveniently.
  • Synchronized waypoints allow fast travel across the map.
  • The world resets if any party member rests at a site of grace to prevent enemy desync.
  • Seamless Co-op syncs progression for all players in multiplayer.
  • Invasions are unnecessary for Varre’s questline progression.
  • The mod utilizes Steam’s newer networking API for improved connections.
  • Stakes of Marika are disabled to prevent connection issues.

Quality of Life Changes

One of the biggest problems that persist in Elden Ring’s online multiplayer is its connection issues. I have discussed the changes made by the mod below:

  • Seamless Co-op disables Easy Anti-Cheat. You and your friends can use any mod they want if all have it downloaded.
  • With the removal of Easy Anti Cheat, the issues of packet loss and bugs caused by it are also gone.
  • Seamless Co-op’s streamlined connection allows your friends to join you from anywhere on the map.
  • So, getting disconnected from the host is no longer an issue because you quickly rejoin and continue from where you left off.

Making a Balanced Co-op Experience

Bonfire

One of the staples of Fromsoftware games is its challenge. This is something the mod creator LukeYei was well aware of. Obviously, playing the game with friends will make the overall game much easier than solo play, but some additions have been made to keep the overall experience balanced and rewarding.

I’ve jotted down the changes made to keep the overall experience challenging and rewarding:

  • Play with 3 friends in the Seamless Co-op mod, up from the base game’s limit of 2.
  • A third tier of enemy scaling is added to balance the experience.
  • Dead players enter spectator mode, allowing the fight to continue until all party members are defeated.
  • Dying in a Co-op session results in a stacking debuff, preventing repeated deaths.
  • The debuff can manifest as one of 5 types of Rots to discourage excessive dying.
  • If a partner rests at a site of grace during a boss fight, the group fighting the boss is removed from the boss room.

Is Seamless Co-op Mod Safe?

Now to answer the burning question. Is Seamless Co-op safe to use? Or is there a chance it will get you banned? Well, the short answer is No.

I want to stress that Elden Ring uses Easy Anti Cheat, and any mods with Elden Ring will force you into an offline mod. Forcing the game into an online mod with mods enabled can get you banned. On the topic of Anti-cheat and inappropriate activity, look at our guides on Anti Cheat Errors and Inappropriate activity detected in Elden Ring .

Similarly, modifying the Seamless Co-op files in order to connect yourself with the vanilla players will most likely result in an immediate ban as well. The save file extension Elden Ring’s Seamless Co-op mod uses is different from that of Elden Ring’s base game. So merging Seamless Co-op save files with the vanilla game can result in a permanent ban too.

Installation Guide and Use

Seamless Co-op is one of the easier mods you can install. You don’t need to install a mod engine or other software like that to make it work. I have explained the very simple 4-step installation process.

  • Download the mod from Nexus Mods.

Files

  • You’ll see two items extracted. One will be a .exe file used to launch Elden Ring, and the other will be a folder named “ SeamlessCoop ”.
  • Go inside the SeamlessCoop folder and open the coopassword file. Once you open this file, you can set your session password before the coopassword.

Password for friendly session

  • Launch Elden Ring through the “ laucnh_elden_ring_seamlesscoop.exe ”.
  • Once inside the game, you’ll notice that you have four new items (Effigy of Malenia , Tiny Great Pot, Separating Mist, and Judicator’s Rulebook) in your inventory.

Create session

  • It does not allow other players to invade your world. This is something that has been taken care of as well.

Friendly PvP

  • One last critical thing I suggest you keep in mind is to make sure you and your friends are using the same version of the mod and the game for the entire thing to work properly. So make sure to keep your mod and the game updated.

In my opinion, the seamless Co-op mod by LukeYui improves Elden Ring greatly. Teaming up with your buddies and exploring The Lands Between without fearing getting kicked out of the session upon the host’s death or traveling huge distances without torrent makes this mod essential for the Co-op experience.

Hopefully, the quality of life changes brought by Seamless Co-op to Elden Ring’s multiplayer won’t go unnoticed by FromSoftware. FromSoftware is always dedicated to their games and always works on polishing any rough edges their games have in their future installments.

This wraps up my guide on Elden Ring’s Seamless Co-op mod. Let me know what you think about my guide in the comments below.

How to fast travel in Elden Ring

Everything you need to know about fast travel in Elden Ring

Want to know how to fast travel in Elden Ring? FromSoftware are generally quite kind when it comes to allowing you to quickly travel between its various checkpoints, and Elden Ring is no exception. You can freely fast travel between Sites of Grace with the touch of a button. Which is great, because the world of Elden Ring is mind-bogglingly large.

Below we'll explain how to unlock the ability to fast travel in Elden Ring, and the limitations of fast travel in different situations. We'll also go over some other ways to explore and travel across the Lands Between.

Cover image for YouTube video

In Elden Ring, you can fast travel to any Site of Grace that you have previously touched. Once you activate a Site of Grace in the world, its location is marked by a golden icon on your map. You can open your map by pressing the "Back" button on controller, or "G" on the keyboard. You can then select any of these icons in order to fast travel directly to that point.

You can fast travel to a Site of Grace from almost anywhere, at almost any time. The only times you can't fast travel are:

  • While you are in combat
  • While you are in a dungeon you haven't completed

If you are in combat, you won't be able to open your map. If you are out of combat but you're in a dungeon or cave that you haven't yet fully explored, then you can open your map, but you'll see that all the Site of Grace icons on the map have a line through them, indicating that you cannot currently fast-travel until you are back out in the overworld.

However, if you're out in the overworld, or if you're in a dungeon that you have already explored, then you'll be able to fast travel whenever you're out of combat.

Part of the Elden Ring map. All the Site of Grace icons have a line through them, indicating that fast travel is currently disabled.

Other ways to travel besides fast travel in Elden Ring

If you don't wish to use fast travel, it's still easier to get around in Elden Ring than in previous FromSoftware games. Your horse, Torrent , is a valuable companion who you can summon at any time to make travelling large distances much easier.

You can also follow the guidance of Grace, which manifests as waves of light which flow around Sites of Grace towards your next destination. The guidance of Grace may point you towards another nearby Site of Grace, or it may point you towards the next pivotal story quest in the game. Whether you are happy to use fast travel or not, it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for where Grace is trying to guide you.

That's all there is to the simple matter of fast travel in Elden Ring. If you're looking to give yourself a strong start with your first playthrough, be sure to check out our guides on the best classes and best builds in Elden Ring . We also have some tips on useful items to find early on, such as the Flask of Wondrous Physick . Elden Ring multiplayer: How to play with friends and how summoning works

How to play with friends in Elden Ring is a bit of a mystery at first, as the game features multiplayer mechanics akin to those in Soulsborne games.

If you're unfamiliar with these past mechanics, instead of creating a lobby or just sending a direct invite to a friend to join you via your platform's chat menu, it requires the use of in-game items.

Each item has a unique purpose - some will allow you to see places to summon people while others are related to invasions, in which random players can appear in your game and attack you.

On this page:

How summoning works in Elden Ring explained

How to play with friends in elden ring.

Cover image for YouTube video

The online component of Elden Ring is a bit tricky. If you've played any Soulsborne games before you may know what to expect already - while there is a bigger focus on multiplayer, it remains a tad enigmatic still.

There are multiple items to use, and you can access them easily from the pause menu - multiplayer.

fast travel co op elden ring

The main Elden Ring summoning items list can be found below:

  • Furlcalling Finger Remedy : This allows you to see summon signs in the world - you can then interact with said summon sign and invite a player, either to join forces or battle against you
  • Finger Severer : Used to remove a summoned player from your session
  • Tarnished's Furled Finger : Leaves a gold summon sign to play co-op multiplayer - other players will be able to invite you to their session by interacting with this sign on their end
  • Duelist's Furled Finger : Works as the Tarnished's Furled Finger, but it's meant for competitive multiplayer - it leaves a red summon sign
  • Bloody Finger : Used to invade another player's session
  • Blue Cipher Ring : Puts you in a waiting state - if another player asks for help, you'll be summoned as a hunter to help during invasions
  • White Cipher Ring : Does the opposite of the Blue Cipher Ring, allowing you to send a request so any available players can help you during invasions

It seems complicated, but honestly, you only need to worry about a couple of them if you're solely interested in regular multiplayer. One thing to note during summons is that there is always a certain purpose for your visits, and once that is fulfilled, you'll be back on your game. You're free to return afterwards, but that means using another item.

fast travel co op elden ring

During regular co-op, the multiplayer session will end if you die in battle or if you defeat the boss in that area. During invasions and competitive play, as expected, it's a defeat or be defeated type of scenario.

But if your sole interest is to play Elden Ring with friends, you can jump to our next section for an easy explainer.

If you want to play with friends in Elden Ring, there are a few steps to consider. But there is an easy method to streamline the experience.

First, there are two options you should bear in mind. In the options menu, head over to system - network and use the Display Player Names option. By default, you will only see other enemies as their character class' names. But it's best to opt for Online ID so you know exactly who you're joining or summoning.

fast travel co op elden ring

Second, in the multiplayer menu, you will see two options for passwords at the bottom: input a multiplayer password and share it with the people you want to play with. This will narrow down the search and make it more seamless.

fast travel co op elden ring

Once these two steps are settled, choose a designated area. You will have to create a summoning sign, so choosing a place that your friend is close to is key. We recommend a Site of Grace , since they can be accessed easily with fast travel on the map. Once you found it, use the Tarnishe's Furled Finger to create a summoning sign.

That's all from your end. Now, your friend has to be in that same spot and use your summoning sign. After they've inputted the password, you will be transported to their game in a matter of seconds.

fast travel co op elden ring

That is all! Sessions can host up to three players at the same time, so as long as everyone follows the previous steps, there should be no problem in creating a 'lobby' of sorts to play.

Using Site of Grace to Fast Travel

To fast travel in Elden Ring, open up your map and select a Site of Grace you wish to fast travel to or by pressing the △ button and selecting it from the Sites of Grace list.

It does not cost anything to fast travel, but you need to have visited the Site of Grace first before you can fast travel to it.

Using Memory of Grace

Use a Memory of Grace if you are ever in a situation where you need to escape but fast traveling by Site of Grace isn't available. This will allow you to travel back to the last Site of Grace you've visited.

This comes at a cost though, as all of your runes will be left behind once you use the item. Be sure to only use it as a last-ditch attempt to escape if you're stuck in a sticky situation.

What to Do When You Can't Fast Travel

When you're being invaded.

When an Invader comes into your world, you will be unable to Fast Travel or open your map.

The only way to enable Fast Traveling again will be to defeat the Invader.

When You Have Another Player Summoned

Similarly to the case above, you will also be unable to Fast Travel if you have another player with you.

You can banish the Summoned player with the Finger Severer .

When You're Being Pursued by an Enemy

Enemies in the game will pursue you for a short time if you aggro'd them, making you unable to open your map.

You can either just run away or ride Torrent far enough to make them lose interest, or find a nearby Site of Grace and rest.

When You're Underground

Exploring underground caves and dungeons will put a red slash mark on your Sites of Grace.

You can only Fast Travel from the entrances of these caves or dungeons.

When You Spring a Trap

Transporter Trap Elden Ring.PNG

Some chests in the game contain transporter traps , which will whisk you away to another location.

You cannot Fast Travel out of wherever you were brought unless you rest at a Site of Grace.

Once you find a Site of Grace, it will be safe to Fast Travel out.

Elden Ring: How To Play Seamless Co-Op With Friends

Much, much better.

What is the Elden Ring Seamless Co-op Mod?

How to use seamless co-op.

fast travel co op elden ring

To complete Elden Ring , players will need a lot of determination as it’s quite the lofty challenge. Because the game doesn’t have a lot of options when it comes to difficulty settings, many players have felt discouraged from continuing on once the difficulty really starts to ramp up in the latter half of the game.

One solution many suggest to combat Elden Ring ‘s unrelenting difficulty is to play online with friends. The game allows players to summon one another into their worlds to play multiplayer, however, the co-op that the game offers leaves a lot to be desired. Luckily, the Seamless Co-op mod is here to make the game a much more enjoyable experience for those looking to not play alone on PC.

Seamless Co-op is a community-made mod that aims to reduce the number of restrictions that Elden Ring puts on its multiplayer mode. Gone are the fog gates that restrict movements, the limitations on your Spectral Steed, Torrent, and the lost connection anytime a player dies. Now through the mod, it’s theoretically possible for two players to start Elden Ring and finish its final boss all in one continuous multiplayer session.

The aspects of Elden Ring ‘s multiplayer that the mod improves are major when it comes to removing barriers of play. Below are the features listed to be changed:

  • If a player dies, they will respawn in the same world at the last bonfire they rested at. The session will not be terminated.
  • Defeating enemy bosses and clearing areas no longer sends co-operators home.
  • All fog walls/barriers that usually restrict the multiplayer zone (along with their respective teleports) are gone.
  • All players can use torrent (assuming they have the whistle) in a session together.
  • All map waypoints will synchronize, allowing you to navigate the world in a group easier.
  • When one player rests at a Site of Grace, the world state will reset for all players. This is necessary to prevent enemy desync.
  • Game progression events completed in online play will also progress the game in your own world.
  • Varre’s questline no longer needs invasions to progress.
  • An overhaul to Elden Ring’s Peer-to-Peer connection system, using Steam’s newer networking API.
  • Players are free to explore the entire game map (overworld, underground, legacy dungeons, etc.) together, and may split up if they wish.
  • The stake of Marika is disabled in online play, as it causes connection problems.

One important question that many fans are likely asking is if using the mod will result in a ban from Elden Ring servers. Luckily, the answer is a definitive “no.” Essentially, the mod never connects to FromSoftware’s matchmaking servers and “uses save files different to the non-modded game.” This means that it’s running on its own servers and making its own save files keeping your game separate. Should you choose to abandon using Seamless Co-op, you can go right back to PvP and other official FromSoft online services without issue.

Follow these steps to play Elden Ring using Seamless Co-op taken directly from its NexusMods page :

  • Download the mod from the ‘Download’ tab or the  GitHub mirror
  • Extract the package you downloaded, and move the following files to your Elden Ring folder (usually in “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ELDENRING\Game”)
  • Edit “cooppassword.ini” to your chosen co-op password
  • Launch the mod using “lauch_elden_ring_seamless_coop.exe”

When you want to play Elden Ring without the mod, launch the game as usual. When wanting to play Seamless Co-op, you’ll need to use the “lauch_elden_ring_seamless_coop.exe.” If you need help with setting it up, take a look at the mod’s Nexusmods page linked above.

Elden Ring co-op mod

Upcoming Elden Ring co-op mod will allow players to spectate and explore more areas together

Image of Sam Robins

If there’s anything you can say about Elden Ring , I think we can all agree that it’s a hard game. But FromSoftware did make sure to provide players with plenty of tools to get by, and the most prominent feature tool at the player’s disposal is the game’s co-op system. However, co-op has its limits that make the online experience less than desirable. A mod for Elden Ring seeks to solve the issues with co-op by introducing plenty of new features .

LukeYui, the modder looking to solve these problems, made a similar mod for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . The YouTube video showing this new Elden Ring mod off gives us a look at loads of neat features. After seeing the video you may even wonder why FromSoftware decided to neglect to implement these seemingly great ideas. The truth is that Elden Ring ‘s co-op system is essentially unchanged from the way it worked all the way back in Demon’s Souls . So FromSoftware could take some notes from this mod, as the features it adds make a lot of sense.

Adding new features to Elden Ring ‘s co-op

One of the most annoying aspects of Elden Ring’s co-op occurs when you’re fighting a boss. If the host of the game dies, other players get booted back to their own worlds. This forces players to have to regroup once again before being able to face the enemy once more. This mod will alleviate that pain by allowing defeated players to spectate each other upon death. Once the boss has been defeated, all players can then respawn without having to leave the game at all.

That isn’t all this mod is introducing to the game. Normally, players cannot access Evergaols, portals, or the Roundtable Hold together. But with the mod, players won’t have those boundaries and can freely explore the Lands Between without fear. Smaller but equally important features include synced waypoints, fast travel voting, and enemy scaling that increases by 25% for each player in the session.

Elden Ring co-op mod

The features added in this mod could potentially make Elden Ring ‘s co-op far more enjoyable. If only for the fact that we could play Elden Ring like an actual co-op game as opposed to an online experience that stops and starts constantly. Admittedly, a big attraction to co-op is the sudden interactions you have with other players that you’ll likely never see again. And being able to do that is cool, but some of us would also like to have a more robust online system.

The Elden Ring seamless co-op mod by LukeYui is still in progress, and as of now, it has no release date. It needs some more time in the oven before it’s stable, but we can expect more features as it develops. As soon as it releases, you may want to find a fellow tarnished to play with. In the meantime, you could always check out another mod that lets you summon a legendary player in the community.

  • Elden Ring 's co-op multiplayer is clunky but adds life to the game world through ephemeral interactions with other players.
  • The game's ambitious open-world design presents challenges for the traditional FromSoftware multiplayer system.
  • Despite its flaws, and no hope of Shadow of the Erdtree improving it, the multiplayer experience in Elden Ring remains captivating and integral to the game's appeal.

My first run through Elden Ring took about 115 hours, but it probably could've been a bit quicker if it weren't for my obsession with the game's co-op. Unfortunately for me, the cooperative multiplayer is clunky and ill-suited to the advancements Elden Ring made over its FromSoftware predecessors. It doesn't make it any less fun necessarily, but it's perhaps the one area I wish could be improved in what I consider an almost flawless game. Anticipation for Elden Ring 's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion has already dragged me back to the game, and I'm once again embroiled in constant co-op, a situation I expect to find myself in once again when the DLC drops.

My obsession with FromSoftware's particular brand of co-op multiplayer started with Dark Souls (I wouldn't go back to Demon's Souls until a couple of years later), where I went into the game knowing nothing aside from its daunting reputation for being "tough but fair." I didn't even know Dark Souls had multiplayer when I started, and its obtuse method of matchmaking with different colors of items called Soapstones was just one of many bizarre design choices in a game that would fundamentally change my understanding of how video games can be fun.

Elden Ring Co-Op Lets Me Be The Helpful Stranger In A Blizzard

Or useless, depending on how quickly i die.

Despite the crushingly lonely atmosphere of games like Demon's Souls , Dark Souls , Bloodborne , and Elden Ring , there's a peculiar sort of life given to their game worlds by the players . Messages cobbled together from preset words and phrases litter the ground, ghostly apparitions of other players pass you in dimly lit dungeon corridors, and bloodstains all around show how some unfortunate player met a violent end. Glowing summon signs are the most tangible signs of life, though, especially once the monochrome phantom bursts through the floor and gives a courteous bow.

The inspiration for such a system, which has remained largely unaltered since its debut in Demon's Souls , actually came from a real-life experience Hidetaka Miyazaki shared in an old Eurogamer interview:

The origin of that idea is actually due to a personal experience where a car suddenly stopped on a hillside after some heavy snow and started to slip. The car following me also got stuck, and then the one behind it spontaneously bumped into it and started pushing it up the hill... That's it! That's how everyone can get home! Then it was my turn and everyone started pushing my car up the hill, and I managed to get home safely. But I couldn't stop the car to say thanks to the people who gave me a shove. I'd have just got stuck again if I'd stopped. On the way back home I wondered whether the last person in the line had made it home, and thought that I would probably never meet the people who had helped me. I thought that maybe if we'd met in another place we'd become friends, or maybe we'd just fight.... You could probably call it a connection of mutual assistance between transient people. Oddly, that incident will probably linger in my heart for a long time. Simply because it's fleeting, I think it stays with you a lot longer... like the cherry blossoms we Japanese love so much.

It's a story that highlights a fascinating part of the human experience, the transience of others and their ability to enter your life for one fleeting saga, perhaps never to be seen again. This inspiration has given Elden Ring (and its predecessors) a facsimile of that feeling you get when you suddenly start thinking about how everyone around you has a life just as complex as your own. Putting down my summon sign in Elden Ring lets me be one of the strangers in the car , pushing Miyazaki up the snowy hill.

Who knows how many hours I've wasted in Elden Ring crouching repeatedly, jumping up and down, rolling through destructible set dressing, or trying to parkour around the environment with players I've never spoken a word to.

But it's also more than that – not always triumphantly cooperative, but endlessly entertaining, partly due to the inherent silliness of video games. Elden Ring has a large variety of emotes, and they certainly get put through their paces without voice chat, but there's also a strange sort of universal, rudimentary communication that's emerged . More often than not, I pop into someone else's world and I instinctively switch to two-handing my weapon and start mashing L1, making my blade wiggle back and forth in front of my character. People almost always respond in kind.

Who knows how many hours I've wasted in Elden Ring crouching repeatedly, jumping up and down, rolling through destructible set dressing, or trying to parkour around the environment with players I've never spoken a word to. It's like Miyazaki says: " It's a simple concept. But you don't know whom you will meet. " It's the kind of serendipity that leads to Let Me Solo Her , a player who wears a loincloth and a ceramic jar on their head, dual-wielding katanas into battle against one of Elden Ring 's hardest bosses , Malenia, on behalf of struggling players. " That kind of encounter forms part of the larger storyline. There are constant surprises ," said Miyazaki about Demon's Souls .

Elden Ring Has Stretched The Limits Of Demon's Souls' Multiplayer

It wasn't designed for a massive, open world.

Despite my infatuation with and continued participation in such multiplayer systems, it's clear that they were not designed with a game as ambitious as Elden Ring in mind . These fleeting encounters were tailor-made for Demon's Souls , where the game world is segmented into levels, not a contiguous environment. If I'm struggling with a level, I can summon a phantom cooperator for help, and once we beat the boss – or one of us dies – we go our separate ways.

This works well enough in Dark Souls , its two sequels, and Bloodborne as well, where even though the game worlds are largely interconnected, they're still clearly segmented by bonfires and boss rooms. In fact, part of what hooked me on the multiplayer system in Dark Souls was how well it was integrated with the game's setting. According to the White Sign Soapstone's item description, " In Lordran, the flow of time is distorted, and the White Sign Soapstone allows Undead to assist one another. "

The not-quite-arbitrary barriers that are set up in a co-op session are antithetical to Elden Ring 's expansive design.

Lordran's (and Drangleic's and Lothric's) convoluted flow of time adds a fascinating, in-universe explanation for all the messages and phantoms, alongside an implication that players are canonically occupying parallel worlds. This idea is adequately grafted onto Elden Ring and its array of severed fingers used in matchmaking, but they're the first indication that FromSoftware's multiplayer system might not mesh perfectly with the true open-world game . Dark Souls ' Soapstones are writing utensils for creating summon signs; Bloodborne 's Bells ring out across worlds; Elden Ring 's Fingers and Effigies feel hand-waved as magic.

The idea of parallel worlds is most prominent in Bloodborne , where – among other items' descriptions – the Beckoning Bell says, " Its ring resonates across worlds, and the first hunter used it as a special signal to call hunters from other worlds to cross the gap and cooperate ."

Elden Ring 's multiplayer is serviceable – and that's apparently been good enough for me – but the cracks are starting to show. The popularity of Elden Ring 's Seamless Co-op mod , created by Nexus Mods user LukeYui , proves that FromSoftware's brand of multiplayer is moving from genuinely interesting and diegetic, to cumbersome and compulsory , especially for those who play Elden Ring on console, like myself.

Limiting freedom of movement when there's an invading phantom is arguably a nice touch, creating a sense that you're trapped somewhere with someone that wants you dead. But the not-quite-arbitrary barriers that are set up in a co-op session are antithetical to Elden Ring 's expansive design. The game already includes matchmaking passwords, so it's easy to find your friends' summon signs, but every time an area boss is defeated, the multiplayer session ends, with no progress carrying over to the summoned player's game aside from any Runes collected.

Shadow Of The Erdtree Won't Fix Elden Ring's Co-Op

Maybe i'm okay with that.

To FromSoftware's credit, slapping Demon's Souls ' multiplayer wholesale onto Elden Ring keeps its original intent intact – interactions with other players are fleeting, serendipitous, and often slapstick. A less unwieldy method of matchmaking would certainly be welcome, though. It's a drawback to the game that almost assuredly won't be addressed with Shadow of the Erdtree . Although the expansion will have a new level scaling system to help balance enemy encounters, reworking the co-op is simply not feasible in DLC .

For me, someone whose chief enjoyment of these games stems from FromSoftware's multiplayer, this is effectively negligible – nothing will stop me from playing Shadow of the Erdtree on release. The launch of FromSoftware's RPGs has become my most cherished gaming opportunity, simply because the player base is active and naive , the perfect recipe for the co-op elements to shine. Elden Ring 's explosion in popularity helped make it my favorite game of 2022 ; I woke up at 3am to play during the game's first closed network test period, but even that initial, revelatory glimpse doesn't compare to my memories of uncovering the secrets of the Lands Between alongside everyone else at launch.

I'll while away minutes wagging my sword at other players and standing in goofy places.

But I feel for people who want to enjoy the journey uninterrupted alongside a friend or loved one. Without a mod, partners have to essentially play through the whole game twice , and while that prospect is of little consequence for the most die-hard Souls fans, it's an unnecessary hurdle for many.

I'm almost certainly going to sink dozens of hours into Shadow of the Erdtree co-op, helping others clear dungeons and fight bosses, or summoning strangers to figuratively push my car up the snowy hill when I'm stuck. I'll while away minutes wagging my sword at other players and standing in goofy places with my character's arms forming a ring around their head. Perhaps it's a testament to Elden Ring 's brilliance that even its most flawed aspect has me enthralled, but if FromSoftware's co-op system is ever replaced, I'll give it a solemn bow before we go our separate ways.

After Elden Ring, FromSoftware Should Leave One Obscure Feature Behind

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Can't Abandon One of the Base Game's Biggest Strengths

Elden ring: all legendary sorcery and incantation locations, elden ring: 12 great armor sets for the early game.

After Elden Ring , FromSoftware’s next project in the Soulslike genre they famously created currently remains unknown. Whatever FromSoftware’s next Souls game after Elden Ring is, be it a sequel or a new IP, it should arguably leave one of the studio’s most obscure features behind. Specifically, future FromSoftware Souls games should consider doing away with their co-op multiplayer barriers and forced PvP.

While Soulslike games are typically known for their steep difficulty curves, Elden Ring notably introduces plenty of new features that help to make the game’s difficulty more subjective and accessible. However, the barriers to co-op multiplayer in Elden Ring that have been passed down from the studios’ previous games stick out like a sore thumb now more than ever because of this. It might be worth adopting a more mainstream approach to co-op multiplayer in FromSoftware’s future Soulslike games.

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC needs to remember what made the base game so successful and imitate that to the best of its ability.

The Case for FromSoftware to Retire Invasion Multiplayer from Future Souls Games

From software should take notes from elden ring’s modding community.

In order to play co-op in Elden Ring , players are forced to open up their game to PvP Invaders, which can be a pretty risky trade-off. This has been a recurring feature in FromSoftware’s Soulslike games that came before Elden Ring , so it’s generally become a normalized convention of the genre by now, at least among longtime fans of Soulslike games. However, many players have turned to community mods for Elden Ring to circumvent this feature, as well as other restrictive barriers set in place when playing Elden Ring co-op — specifically, by using the Seamless Co-op mod.

Currently, the Seamless Co-op mod created by LukeYui is the all-time most popular mod for Elden Ring on Nexus Mods, with over 3.5 million total downloads and 37 thousand endorsements. So considering how popular this community mod for Elden Ring has become, FromSoftware should consider making changes to how co-op multiplayer and invasion PvP works in future Soulslike games.

The Seamless Co-op mod ultimately does many things, though primarily it allows players to access features and locations that are normally unavailable while playing co-op and also prevents players from being invaded without permission.

Elden Ring’s Forced PvP Sticks Out Like a Sore thumb

Elden Ring ’s invasion PvP can lead to some exciting battles, funny encounters, or both, though this doesn’t justify the game forcing players into PvP in what’s otherwise a single-player or cooperative game. Originally, one of Elden Ring ’s NPC questlines required players to participate in invasion PvP to progress. However, the forced PvP in this questline was later made optional. So in hindsight, it’s time that this change came to Elden Ring ’s invasion PvP altogether.

While the past FromSoftware games might have relied on invasion multiplayer to maintain the game’s PvP community, Elden Ring seemingly doesn’t have to do this anymore because of the game’s overall popularity. Given that there’s already a dedicated community that supports the other forms of PvP in Elden Ring , it might be for the best to retire invasion PvP going forward, or otherwise make it an optional feature for players who prefer the original experience.

Dying in the Lands Between is typically only ever a minor setback, considering that players can farm runes in Elden Ring to make up for any lost progress. Still, though, PvP isn’t for everyone, let alone Elden Ring ’s invasion PvP, which can be an unwelcome surprise that pits players against uneven opponents. Future FromSoftware games don’t have to entirely remove invasions, but making them optional could improve players' experience in Elden Ring without having to rely on community mods.

Elden Ring is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set in a world co-created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series, and George R.R. Martin, the author of the best-selling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. This collaboration between two renowned creators has resulted in FromSoftware's largest game to date, filled with danger and discovery at every turn. Hidetaka Miyazaki, president and game director of FromSoftware, has a history of directing highly acclaimed games in franchises such as Armored Core and Dark Souls.
