10 Things You Must know if you are transiting through Dubai International Airport (DXB)

If you are a transit passenger at Dubai International Airport, there are several essential things you should know to make your experience smooth and comfortable:

Terminal Information

Dubai International Airport has three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Check your connecting flight details and the terminal you will be arriving at and departing from.

Shuttling between terminal 1 and terminal 3

Passengers can freely walk between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 without passing through customs. Alternatively, the 24/7 free airport shuttle bus or the metro line offer convenient transfer options.

Shuttling between terminal 2 to terminal 3

Terminal 2 connects to Terminal 3 via the free airport shuttle bus, operating around the clock with a 20-minute frequency. Passengers with a single ticket for connecting flights will be transferred airside by their airline.

Transit Visa

Depending on your nationality and the length of your layover, you may require a transit visa. Check the visa requirements well in advance and ensure you have the necessary documents if needed.

Emirates Airlines offers comprehensive travel services, including airport meet and greet, 24-hour check-in, guided tours, and visa assistance. Contact your local Emirates office or travel agent after booking to arrange these services

Time Between Flights

Ensure you have sufficient time between flights to make the connection comfortably. Dubai Airport can be busy, so having a reasonable layover time is essential to avoid missing your onward flight. Follow the signs for “Transfers” upon arrival. You may need to clear security checks, but you will not need to go through immigration if you’re a transit passenger.

If your luggage is checked through to your final destination, you don’t need to worry about it during the layover. However, if you have to claim and re-check your baggage, follow the signs for Baggage Claim, then proceed to the check-in counter for your connecting flight. For brief layovers in Dubai, travelers can securely store bags at Terminals 1 or 3 for AED 35 (about US$10) per bag for 12 hours.

Duty-Free Shopping

Dubai is known for its extensive duty-free shopping. If you plan to make purchases, be aware of the duty-free regulations and restrictions of your final destination.

Currency Exchange

Currency exchange services are available for both arrivals and departures across all three terminals at Dubai International Airport. Travelex operates 16 branches throughout the airport, and Al Ansari Exchange can be found in Terminal 1.

Dubai International Airport is geared towards transit passengers, with easy ways to find your next flight.

Transiting through any airport can be hectic, with travelers constantly wondering where to go before their next flight. However, some airports are better than others, particularly those used to dealing with high amounts of connecting passengers. One such example is Amsterdam Schiphol, where around 35% of passengers are there for the purpose of connecting from one flight to another.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is another example of a connection-heavy facility, thanks to the strong presence of UAE flag carrier Emirates. Here's a guide for your next journey through the Middle Eastern superhub.

Where are my bags?

The first step to transiting through Dubai Airport is to check for your checked bags . If flying with just one airline, such as Emirates , flydubai, or their partners, you'll see your bags at the final destination, as, like your connecting flights, they are booked through under a single, all-encompassing itinerary. However, if you are booked on two different flights, you will have to check your bags in for the next flight.

Here is where Dubai Airport's various offerings come in handy. At Terminal 1, which is used by most airlines, the Marhaba service will transfer your bags for a fee from the first flight to the next. For this, follow the signs to Flight Connections and go to the desks, where agents will scan your bag tag to locate your suitcase.

To see if your flight is eligible, you can check the Marahaba website and even pre-book the service for around $55. Some airlines, such as flyadeal, do not allow passengers to self-connect, so checking ahead is an important step. Emirates also offers a baggage transfer service for inter-terminal connections. Either way, once this has been dealt with, you can move on to the next step of the transit process.

Boarding passes and document checks

Once you've successfully dealt with your checked baggage, or if you are traveling light, the Flight Connections area also hosts airline desks to print your boarding pass and check documents. These generally open three hours in advance.

However, some airlines, like IndiGo , have a near-constant presence due to the number of departures. If you arrive early, there is no need to panic if your desk is not open - just ask one of the agents what time it will be available. It is also worth noting that the need to pick up boarding passes may differ by airline/terminal.

Terminal 3 is wholly operated by Emirates, so most passengers there tend to have all their boarding passes in advance. Terminals 1 and 2 offer transfer desks for international airlines and flydubai /regional carriers respectively.

When Simple Flying's Pranjal Pande transited in Dubai, the British Airways desk opened three hours before departure, and he had no problem printing a boarding pass ahead of the 01:05 departure. Once you have your pass, the transit process is complete, and you can proceed to the gate like everyone else at the airport.

Smooth experience

From Pranjal's experience, transferring to Terminal 1 of Dubai Airport was smooth, with the staff generally helpful but demanding with details. The security check before entering was relatively empty in the evening, but the terminal was bustling with passengers. Mobile boarding passes do make things easier, and you should note that you had to show a boarding pass to transit at DXB in the first place.

Considering adding a short stopover in the UAE to your trip itinerary? You might need to obtain a visa if you are transiting through any of the emirates’ airports to a third destination. The good news is that getting a UAE stopover visa is a straightforward process. Let’s look at how international travellers can apply for a UAE transit visa, the eligibility criteria, what documents are required and more.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU NEED A TRANSIT VISA?

You will need a transit visa, if:

• You don’t have a passport of a country, which is on the UAE visa on arrival or a visa-free entrance list. (You can visit the official website to check if you’re eligible for a visa on arrival or not).
• You are not a citizen of the countries (GCC region) exempted from that UAE Tourist Visas.
• Your onward flight is in the next 48 or 96 hours

DURATION OF THE UAE TRANSIT VISA

The UAE issues two types of single entry transit visas, visas issued for 48 and 96 hours. You have to apply for a visa prior to your arrival in the country. Note that both 48-hour and 96-hour visas expire within 30 days of issue. Moreover, both visas cannot be extended once issued. 

HOW TO APPLY FOR A UAE TRANSIT VISA

You can apply for a UAE transit visa only through a UAE-based airline. One can seek help from a travel agency. However, even if you are hiring a travel agent for the process, all visas are routed through the airline. Remember that the visa needs to be processed and approved before you enter the UAE. Following are the modes through which airline agents can apply for visas online:

• ICA UAE eChannels app
• eChannels portal
• Online portals of each emirate’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA)

You need these documents for the application:

• Original passport (valid up to six months from the date of travel) and coloured copies
• Confirmed tickets for the next flight
• Passport-size photographs against a white background.

In addition to this, if your transit is longer than 24 hours, you will need to provide your confirmed hotel booking or proof of residence in case you are staying with a friend or relative. 

Hence, your job is to provide all the documents to the airline representative who can obtain a visa for you.

COST OF THE TRANSIT VISA IN THE UAE

Here are the details of the transit visa fee in the UAE:

• 48-Hour Transit Visa: Free of charge
• UAE 96-Hour Visa: AED 50

Also, you will have to pay a departure fee of AED 30. There is no additional UAE transit visa cost. 

AIRLINES COST

You can apply via Etihad or Emirates Airline.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS

For a 48-Hour Transit Visa, the charges would be AED 37. Whereas, for the 96-Hour Transit Visa, you would have to pay AED 206.

EMIRATES AIRLINES

Similarly, the fee of 48-Hour Transit Visa is AED 37. For the 4-day Transit Visa, the cost is AED 180. For details about Emirates transit visa, the visit the official website.

Both the 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas are non-extendable and non-renewable. You must make a UAE transit visa application each time you stop in the country.

Which countries’ citizens are eligible for a visa on arrival in the uae.

UAE offers citizens of around 19 countries a 30-day visit visa facility, including the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and New Zealand. Other countries like France, Germany and Italy can get a 90-day Dubai visa on arrival. Indian citizens with a normal passport and either a visit visa or a green card issued by the USA or a residence visa issued by the UK or EU can obtain a 14-day visa on arrival

There are no mandatory medical tests required to get a transit visa. However, it is always good to get a medical check-up before you travel internationally. 

HOW TO APPLY FOR UAE TRANSIT VISA?

As discussed, you can apply for a transit visa of the UAE via airlines or a travel agent. For Abu Dhabi transit visa or Dubai transit visa, the process is the same, as the visa for one emirate is valid for the entire country.

IS TRANSIT VISA APPLICATION FEE REFUNDABLE IN THE UAE?

No, once the application has been submitted, the fee is non-refundable.

CAN A TRANSIT VISA BE CONVERTED TO A RESIDENCE VISA OR WORK PERMIT?

The transit visa for the UAE cannot be converted into a residence visa or work permit. These have to be applied separately.

Dubai: As flights resume for some categories of passengers from countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, detailed guidelines have been announced on the steps eligible passengers need to follow if they wish to travel from these countries to the UAE.

But what are the rules for transit passengers? Do they also need to be vaccinated and get PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests done before boarding their flight, which transits through the UAE? The answer depends on three factors:

1. Which country you are travelling from.

2. Which country is your final destination.

3. Which airport you are transiting from in the UAE.

Here is a breakdown of all the requirements listed by UAE-based airlines for transit passengers.

As of August 8, according to the website of Emirates, the PCR test requirements depend on your port of origin and final destination.

All passengers who have started their journey in Afghanistan or Indonesia and are transiting through Dubai must have a negative COVID 19 PCR test certificate for a test taken no more than 48 hours before departure. The test certificate must include a QR code.

Passengers transiting through Dubai from the following countries are required to present a negative COVID 19 PCR test certificate for a test taken no more than 72 hours before departure, as well as to follow any requirements mandated by their final destination:

• Bosnia & Herzegovina
• Ivory Coast
• South Sudan
• Turkmenistan

The certificate must be a PCR test. Travellers must bring an official, digital or printed certificate in English or Arabic to check in – SMS certificates are not accepted. PCR certificates in other languages as required by the final destination are acceptable if they can be validated at the originating station.

Transit passengers from India, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Uganda

Must complete all the requirements of their final destination and present a negative COVID 19 PCR test certificate for a test taken 72 hours or less before departure or as required by their final destination. Only COVID 19 PCR test reports from certified labs that issue a QR code linked to the original report will be accepted.

Passengers from all other countries do not need a COVID 19 PCR test to transit in Dubai, unless it’s required by their final destination.

According to the website of Etihad, you need to have a COVID-19 PCR test before you fly to Abu Dhabi, even if you are just transiting. When you need to take a test – between 48 to 72 hours before your flight – will depend on your final destination.

If you need to factor in transit time, according to the Etihad website, the maximum connection time in Abu Dhabi is 12 hours, for new bookings.

According to the website of Air Arabia, transit passengers are required to take a COVID-19 PCR test within 96 hours of the flight departure time from an approved medical facility. Passengers below 12 years of age are exempt from the test. You should carry a copy of your negative test result during the full journey.

There are no requirements for transit passengers to be fully vaccinated mentioned by any UAE-based airlines.

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and a diverse melting pot where almost all attires and cultural expressions are accepted. Swimwear is permissible at beaches, waterparks, public pools and spa areas but is not considered appropriate in areas such as business districts and shopping malls.

Dressing conservatively is appreciated in Dubai's historic neighbourhoods and places of worship. There are specific requirements for entering a mosque, like wearing clothing that covers shoulders, arms and legs – and headscarves for women.

Marhaba! Dubai is a warm and friendly city and you will come across many people who will greet you with a smile and wish you well. A handshake is customary, but do note it is typically accepted that this should be initiated by women.

Public displays of affection are best kept to a minimum. Holding hands is acceptable, but kissing and hugging in public areas is not permitted.

Alcohol is served in licensed establishments such as hotels, bars and specialised shops to those over 21 years of age. However, drunk and disorderly conduct and drunk driving are not acceptable. Use or possession of illegal drugs is also strictly prohibited.

Dubai is home to hundreds of nationalities and both Arabic and English are spoken across the city. Learning a few Arabic words can certainly make the trip more memorable! Many medicines used worldwide are readily available in pharmacies and hospitals across Dubai, but as in most countries, there are some medications which are restricted or prohibited for use in the UAE.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has full details of controlled or prohibited medications, plus information on what documents you need to carry with you if you need to bring a controlled medication into Dubai. MOHAP also issues a permit to import medicines into the UAE, which you can apply for on their website .

While the permit is optional, it is strongly recommended to obtain it prior to your trip as it will help ensure you have all the correct information and documents. You must also bring your official prescription from the issuing authority of where you are receiving treatment. Please note you can carry medicines for a maximum period of three months. If you have any questions, or want to check the status of a particular medication, contact your local UAE embassy, or get in touch with MOHAP .

To tip or not to tip? The short answer is, there are no rules when it comes to tipping in Dubai. How much you tip varies from profession to profession, and is also largely down to personal preference. It is customary to offer a little extra in most cases, but it certainly isn’t compulsory. Everyone arrives in Dubai with their own customs and expectations, but one thing that's always consistent is the high level of service.

If you are travelling abroad from India, quite often, you are bound to have a flight layover in the UAE. This is more in the case of the Dubai International Airport as it is one of the busiest in the world. To stay in Dubai for your transit, you will need a Dubai transit visa for Indians .

The transit visa for Dubai is a single entry visa issued to travellers who have to stay in the UAE for more than 8 hours as a part of airport transit. The transit visas can be issued as two types - 48-hour transit , and 96-hour transit . The transit visa is also an e-visa and should be applied prior to your arrival in the country. However, for people coming from most countries such as the UK, USA, Schengen countries, etc, and GCC countries, they will be issued a visa on arrival.

 With the transit visa, you can explore the cities in the country, meet your friends or family, and even perform business meetings. As a result, the transit visa is also ideal for business persons who require to be in the country only for a few days.

Note that although it is commonly known as a ‘Dubai’ transit permit, the visa issued by Dubai is officially called the UAE transit visa. Although, the permit is valid throughout the rest of the UAE as well.

The UAE embassy does not issue a permit to ordinary passport holders. The applications require to be done with the help of Dubai based airlines, a travel agency, or a hotel. They can apply for a visa on your behalf to the official issuing authority in Dubai. To apply for Dubai transit visa , you can follow the procedure mentioned as follows -

• Choose the method of application that is easier for you. While choosing travel agencies, ensure that they are well-reputed and genuine.
• Now, determine the type of visa you require.
• Once you do that, obtain the necessary documents as per your visa type.
• Fill in the application form available at the airline websites, or at the travel agencies.
• The necessary documents must be then uploaded to the respective online portals.
• Proceed to pay the visa fees online.
• Submit your application.

Always ensure that you provide the correct details along with genuine documents. You may get a visa denial if your application is incorrect. This may cause you from not being able to apply for the visa in the future.

Please note that if you are flying to Dubai via their home-based airlines (Emirates or Fly Dubai), you can apply at one of the Dubai Visa Service Centres located all over India.

To be eligible to apply for a transit visa for Dubai, you will need to meet the following criteria - 

• You will need to possess a valid ordinary passport.
• You should have an onward flight from the UAE within the period.
• If your transit is longer than 24 hours, you will need to submit a hotel booking confirmation or a residence proof of the family/friend with whom you will be staying during the period.

As per the transit requirements, the following documents are required for the application - 

• A passport valid for upto 6 months from the date of travel
• Colour copies of the passport
• 2 identical passport size photographs
• Confirmed flight tickets including the onward journey
• Dubai transit visa photo size : 35X45 mm
• Recently captured
• Face: directed towards the camera
• Eyes: open, and looking straight at the camera
• Background: plain white
• Headgear: allowed for religious purposes
• Glasses: only  prescription eye-wear
• Neutral facial expression

The fees for transit permit depends on numerous aspects such as the speed of processing, the type of permit, service charges, and so on. There could also be additional charges based on the mode of application.

The transit permit is normally issued in about 3-5 working days. However, it can vary depending on factors such as any express processing options, the length of the visa, the entry type, or even upon any complications arising with documents. It also depends upon how you chose to apply. Your processing may also be faster depending upon your travel history such as your passport containing a visa to Schengen, UK, USA, etc in the past 5 years.

You can check your status in a number of ways. If you have applied through an airline, you can log in to their portal and check the status. Travel agencies also allow you to track the status in the same way. Alternatively, you can send an email to the agency/airline/hotel enquiring about the status. If you have applied through a DVPC, you can track it by visiting their website with your reference number and passport expiry date.

Once you obtain your transit permit, keep in mind the following key points - 

Before travelling -

• You will have to take a print out of your visa and keep it with you as a part of your travel documents.
• Ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents such as passport, identification documents, and visa.
• Make a note your validity as staying back in the country beyond the expiry is a criminal offence and may attract hefty fines and penal action. 
• If you are applying via a Dubai based airline, you may have to fly with them to the UAE.
• You must travel within 14 days after your visa issue date for 48-hour transit visa, and within 30 days after your issue date for the 96-hour transit visa.

At the border - 

• Upon landing, you will have to show your visa and passport to the border control. 
• You will also have to produce your onward journey ticket.
• Note that the visa does not guarantee you entry into the country. This is dependent on the decision of border control in Dubai.

While you are in Dubai -

• While you are in the country, you can visit any of the different Emirates.
• You cannot work while you are on a transit visa. However, you are permitted to participate in business meetings, conferences, etc.
• You cannot extend your visa.
• Dubai has strict laws. You are expected to abide by these while you are in the country.
• You must respect the customs and traditions in the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i extend my transit visa for dubai.

The transit permit, be it 48-hr or 96-hr, are both non-extendable and non-renewable. As a result, you cannot extend these. You will have to apply for a new one if you require to stay longer. In all other cases, you must leave the country when your permit expires.

After Expiring My Transit Visa for Dubai, How Long Can I Stay?

Once your permit has expired, you cannot stay any longer in the UAE. The transit visa is non-extendable. As a result, you must leave the country upon expiry. Staying back after this period is considered as an offence and can lead to deportation or hefty fines.

What is the Medical Test for Transit Visa for Dubai?

Since this is a type of short duration permit and it is only for a few days, there are no mandatory medical test requirements. However, it is suggested that you get a medical check-up done before travelling to a foreign country.

Can I convert My Transit Visa for Dubai into Work permit?

No, you cannot convert the transit into a work permit. The 48-hr, and 96-hr permits are non-convertible. As a result, you must leave the country upon expiry of your transit visa. If you do need a work permit, you may apply for a new one once you are back in your home country.

Visa-free travel to China welcomed by people wanting to reunite with family

Jenny Zhang has plans to travel to China soon to reunite with her 100-year-old mum, and she has welcomed a move to give Australians visa-free entry for short trips.

"This is the best policy. It will provide great convenience to Chinese people living in Australia," she said.

"The Chinese community is very happy about this news."

The 15-day visa-free travel for Australians was announced by Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday, after a formal meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

"We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business and visiting family members — so as to better facilitate personal exchanges, China will also include Australia in its Visa Waiver Program," the premier said.

This change will also save Australians about $110, the current cost for a single-entry tourist visa.

The new visa-free travel scheme is due to come in within the next few months.

China's tourism industry peaked in 2019 at a value of $580 billion and has been recovering slowly, according to Statista.

They had forecast that it could take another five years to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels.

Not everyone happy with move

While Ms Zhang was thrilled with the upcoming change, Ramila Chanisheff, the president of the Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women's Association said it would not help members of her community.

"Our family members … we can not even talk to them — let alone visit them," she told the ABC.

"Not all of us will be given visas to visit our family members. And if we do, we will be worried about our safety."

Dawa Sangmo, the Chinese liaison officer of the Tibet Information Office in Canberra raised similar worries.

"The visa-free policy is not only an issue that relates to our safety, but a matter that is more beneficial to China and its government," she told the ABC.

There was not much detail in the announcement, but Premier Li did mention it would be "reciprocal", making it easier for Chinese travellers to enter Australia.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the second highest amount of tourists visiting Australia came from China, only behind arrivals from New Zealand, as of April this year.

However, overall, the amount of people travelling out of China is down 40 per cent from pre-COVID levels in 2019, Reuters reported.
