Travelling is almost always fun and exciting. But let’s be real – it doesn’t always go as planned. Flights get delayed, luggage gets lost, and sometimes, you just get sick. These are just some of the many travel problems that can spoil your vacation, and hurt your wallet. 

But as with most things in life, with a little bit of planning and preparation, you can ensure ease in handling most travel problems without breaking the bank.

What Are Some Common Travel Problems?

Here are some common travel problems to be aware of and how to overcome them.

Flight Delays and Cancellations

Imagine you’re finally on your way to your dream vacation that you’ve been planning for months. You’re pumped, until you hear the dreaded news: your flight has been delayed for several hours or even cancelled altogether. It’s every traveller’s nightmare, especially when you have activities and accommodation all booked.

If flight delays or cancellations happen to you, there are a few things you should do: 

  • Meals, phone calls, and internet usage
  • Hotel accommodation and transportation
  • A full refund or alternative flight (in case of flight cancellation) 

Note that the airline will not compensate you for delays or cancellations due to reasons beyond its control, such as security risks and extreme weather.

  • Contact your travel takaful operator. If you have travel takaful (or travel insurance ), it may compensate you for your flight delay or cancellation. Contact your takaful operator as soon as possible with documentation supporting your claim, such as your boarding pass or confirmation email from your airline.

You would also be eligible for compensation if your international flight gets cancelled. With the Platinum family plan, you’ll receive up to RM125,000, which could cover the entire cost of your family trip.

Delayed, Damaged, or Lost Luggage

Delayed, damaged, or lost luggage can be another major travel problem. If your luggage is lost, there’s a slight chance you may never see it again. This means you’ll need to fork out money for new clothes and other essentials, on top of a new luggage. 

If your luggage doesn’t arrive on the same flight as you, or if it gets lost or damaged during the flight, here’s what you can do:

  • Check with your airline’s luggage office . If your luggage is not on the designated pick-up carousel, approach the airline’s luggage office to check its status.
  • If they find your luggage but it will take hours to arrive, fill out their delayed luggage form. 

What if your luggage is damaged or lost? Check your airline’s claims and compensation policy, and fill out their delayed or lost luggage form. Just note that you will not be compensated for normal wear and tear on your luggage, such as scratches and minor cuts.

  • Submit a claim to your takaful operator. Do you know that your travel takaful can cover your damaged or lost luggage? Lost Passports or Visas

Have you ever checked your passport multiple times in a single hour, only to check it again in the next? Generally, you do your best to take every possible measure to protect your travel documents , especially your passport and visa when travelling abroad. 

Losing them is a major travel problem as you may be denied entry into the country you’re visiting, and you may not be able to fly home either. 

If you find yourself in this situation, what can you do about it?

  • Report the loss to the local police. Head to the nearest local police station as soon as possible and file a report about your lost passport or visa. You’ll need to get a police report in order to replace the lost document. 
  • Contact your embassy or consulate. Your embassy or consulate can assist you in getting a new passport, visa, or emergency travel document.
  • Contact your travel takaful operator. If you have travel takaful, reach out to your takaful operator for assistance. If you get the Platinum TripCare 360 Takaful , you’ll receive up to RM1,500 in reimbursements for lost or stolen travel documents. 

Pro-tip: Make a digital copy of your passport and visa, and password-protect them in a secure cloud storage service, like Dropbox or iCloud. This way, if you lose your original documents, you’ll still have a copy of them. 

Medical Emergencies

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. Food poisoning, heatstroke, and a broken ankle are some examples of the many medical emergencies that can happen while travelling.

If you’re seriously ill or injured, immediately seek medical attention. As a tourist, hospital admissions can be costly but your health comes first. Eligible age for the plan?

The eligible age for the TripCare 360 Insurance & Takaful plan depends on age. From youngest 45 days old to oldest 80 years old can benefits from it.

When is the period of the coverage?

The period covered not exceeded 30 consecutive days for traveling within Malaysia OR from the start date of the trip, you have 90 days to travel to and within an area other than Malaysia.

Is it possible for me to make a nomination for this plan?

Yes. You have the option of either nominating or appointing the individual.

If I’m holding a one-way ticket, am I eligible to purchase this plan?

Unfortunately, you are not eligible to purchase the TripCare 360 Insurance & Takaful for one way trip.

What is the procedure for canceling my coverage and receiving a refund of the premium paid?

No refund of contributions will be allowed once the TripCare 360 Takaful certificate is issued.

Travel Ezy Insurance & Takaful

You may cancel your policy by notifying Etiqa in writing at least three (3) days before the scheduled departure time. Also, you are entitled to a refund of the premium as well as the stamp duty paid for this policy if you cancel it.

Consistently being one of the cheapest plans, Etiqa's Tiq travel insurance combines attractive prices with comprehensive coverage that will please most travellers. However, if your criteria is trip inconvenience coverage, you may not get the coverage you need.

Tiq Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

The main reason you should consider Tiq by Etiqa's travel insurance is its affordability. Tiq's Entry and Savvy plans stand out in particular for offering among the cheapest prices for entry-level and mid-tier travel insurance plans on the Singapore market. Its coverage runs fairly average, but it provides cover for adventurous activity so it can be a good option of students or budget travellers who prefer to be active on their holidays. Etiqa is also a leader in innovation as the first insurer in the Singapore market to provide automatic real-time flight delay claims approval, meaning that you can be reimbursed for your flight delays as soon as they occur.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers compare and find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

However, Etiqa may not be the best choice for people who booked luxury trips or need high levels of trip inconvenience coverage. In most cases, Etiqa's travel insurance plans fall below average compared to their peers for trip inconvenience benefits like missed connections, delays, cancellations and baggage loss as well as some medical coverage. Furthermore, its benefits are fairly standard so you won't find much if you are looking for niche coverage like sports equipment, wedding or pregnancy benefits. Thus, we don't recommend Tiq for people who are willing to spend extra for copious amounts of coverage or require niche benefits like sports equipment coverage or pregnancy benefits.

Notable Exclusions

Though Etiqa is lenient with sports-related medical events you can claim, it will not cover your sports equipment, including skis and snowboards. Medical exclusions are standard, including pre-existing conditions (unless you're buying the Pre-Ex plan), pregnancy-related events, mental disorder, suicide and purposeful self-injury. Other main exclusions include participating in illegal activity, participating in war and trips exceeding 182 days.

Tiq Travel Insurance Entry Plan

Etiqa has carved out a place for itself in the market for budget travel insurance plans with its Entry plan. It offers some of the lowest prices for coverage within ASEAN and Asia without cutting out the necessary protection you expect in a travel insurance policy. We think this is a great plan for the consumer who is interested in getting as cheap a plan as possible without having to compromise too much on the very features you're looking for in travel insurance anyway. For instance, students and budget travellers who are active will benefit from the low prices, adventurous activity coverage and a solid offering of benefits that cover the most likely travel woes. That said, it is possible to find even cheaper travel insurance plans, like with FWD and Budget Direct, so those looking for rock bottom prices may not find the Entry plan to be the best fit.

Tiq Travel Insurance Savvy Plan

If you're looking for an affordable mid-level, single trip plan, then Etiqa will deliver. Week-long and longer trips cost 20%-40% below average to insure and premiums drop by as much as 50% from the market average for family plans, making Etiqa's Tiq Savvy plan one of the most competitively priced mid-tier plans. However, it offers quite below-average coverage for a mid-tier plan, so those hoping to pay extra for considerably more coverage may not find the Savvy plan's upgrades to be worthwhile, as there are budget plans that can offer more coverage for the same price (or lower). Lastly, Frequent travellers should take note that the Savvy's annual plans cost around the average compared to other mid-tier plans on the market. Therefore, cost-conscious travellers may find a better deal with insurers like DirectAsia and FWD.

Tiq Travel Insurance Luxury Plan

Etiqa's premium offering, the Luxury Plan, is fairly undistinguished in that it offers below-average to average levels of coverage compared to other top-shelf travel insurance plans while also running near the middle of the pack in terms of pricing. We think that if you're seeking maximum levels of coverage or great value in a premium travel insurance plan, there are superior choices available to you, such as the DirectAsia's DA500 plan .

Though Etiqa doesn't have outright sports coverage, it does allow some adventurous activity such as skiing/snowboarding, hiking, scuba diving (above 30 metres), sky-diving, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, paragliding, parachuting and hot air balloon rides. However, there is no option for sports equipment coverage.

Apart from the Child Education Cover, Rental Car Excess Cover, Pet Hotel Cover and Sport Equipment Protector that Etiqa currently offers, Etiqa has added a comprehensive COVID-19 add-on protecting you before, during and after your trip. However, the COVID-19 add-on coverage is only available to travellers who are fully vaccinated, and fulfil the pre-departure & post-arrival tests requirements imposed by the destination country or transport operator.

To submit a claim with Etiqa, you can either contact Etiqa to get the claims procedures or complete the online claim form and submit it along with the necessary original documentation. If you have a TiqConnect account, you can submit your claims through TiqConnect. You can also conveniently contact their customer care officers via Whatsapp at the number provided below. That said, Tiq Travel Insurance also offers convenient automatic claims 3-hour flight delays (you don't even have to submit a claim) and instant claims encashment via PayNow, which makes it easier than most other insurers to file a claim when a travel inconvenience occurs.

Encashable Credit:

This amount can be used to offset for purchase or renewal of your policies.

Alternatively, you can encash the amount.

Non- Encashable Etiqa$:

You may login to TiqConnect to set up a Direct Credit Bank Transfer or use PayNow to encash your credits in your eWallet. Please note that you may only do so for the encashable credits stated in your eWallet.

You can login to any of your bank’s online portal and register for one. It can be registered under your mobile or NRIC.

Yes, we will send out your monthly eWallet statement if there is existing balance in your account.

Before the payment page, our system will check the eWallet balance.  If you have a balance, we would display the balance by default to deduct from the account.  If you have Etiqa$, the premium will be deducted from Etiqa$ first and then from the encashable amount.

Encashable Credits:

Your Encashable Credits do not expire. These are credits you received from claims reimbursements/ policy cancellation etc.

Non Encashable Credits (Etiqa$):

Your Non- Encashable Etiqa$ has an expiry. You may login to TiqConnect to view the expiry date.

Please come to our Customer Care office and our staff will be able to assist in the encashment. And we can arrange to disable the account as well.

We are moving towards digitalization and ease of reimbursements to the customers. Customers will be automatically registered for TiqConnect upon their online purchase. Our staff can assist in the encashment. And if you do not want the account, a request can be submitted after the withdrawal is done.

For elderly whom requires assistance, they can drop by our office for assistance.

Yes. You may ignore and leave the credits in the eWallet and utilize it later.  However, do take note that the notification will be sent automatically to remind you of the balance.  Also, there is an expiry date for the non-encashable credits (Etiqa$).  Please log in to TiqConnect to check the expiry date.

Making Premium Payments (Life Policies only)

Q1.       What is eGIRO?

eGIRO stands for Electronic GIRO. It is a digital initiative that digitises the GIRO application process with an aim to significantly reduce the GIRO set-up turnaround time. This is a joint initiative by The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), and Participating Banks, with the support of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Q2.       How does eGIRO work and how can it benefit me?

You will now be able to apply for eGIRO via our customer portal at https://www.etiqa.com.sg/LoginPortal/#/EnrolGIRO  to set up eGIRO in minutes. All you need to do is specify your designated bank for the payment through eGIRO.

Q3.       Who are the participating banks in eGIRO?

At launch, 8 participating banks will be taking part in eGIRO: Bank of China, DBS Bank/POSB, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Maybank, OCBC Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and UOB. The Association of Banks in Singapore is working to onboard more banks onto eGIRO.

Q4.       How can I use eGIRO to pay my insurance premium to Etiqa?

For now, you can use eGIRO to pay only for recurring premiums due on your inforce life insurance policies with us.

Q5.       Will eGIRO replace current paper GIRO?

No. eGIRO is currently not replacing paper GIRO.

Q6.       Will my paper submissions or existing instructions be migrated to eGIRO?

No. Existing instructions or new setups by paper forms will not be migrated to eGIRO.

Q7.       What are the measures in place to safeguard my data during eGIRO set up?

There are stringent security measures in place to safeguard your personal data that passes through eGIRO. Your data is encrypted. Only the bank and billing organisation that you have authorised to receive your data is able to decrypt the data to execute the transactions that you requested. The authentication and authorisation process are underpinned by banks’ 2FA and Transaction Signing.

Q8.       How do I check my eGIRO application status?

The approval for eGIRO application is instant. Upon successful enrolment, you will see a confirmation from the bank that your application is successful. For failed enrolment, an error message will be shown online.

Q9.       How can I amend an existing eGIRO submitted via online?

Currently, you will not be able to amend existing eGIRO instructions submitted via online. You may however wish to initiate a cancellation before resubmitting a new eGIRO set-up.

Q10.       Can I use a joint bank account to set up the eGIRO application?

Yes you can provided that you are also a named joint account holder and you are using this account to pay for a policy whom you are (1) the policyholder or (2) the named payor of the policy.

Q11.       Can I use someone’s bank account to set up the eGIRO application?

No, you cannot unless the named account holder is the name payor of the policy.

Q12.       How can I terminate my eGIRO Payment arrangement?

You and/or your bank account holder can authorise the termination by completing the “Cancellation / Termination of GIRO Arrangement Form” and email us at  [email protected] . Alternatively, the bank account holder can terminate the arrangement directly with the bank.

Q13.       When is the premium deduction dates?

Please refer to the table on the premium deduction dates.  Should the first attempt to deduct the premiums from your GIRO account fails, we will make one further attempt. However, if both attempts are unsuccessful, the GIRO facility will be discontinued automatically.

  Q14.       Can I still apply for GIRO if I do not want online?

We encourage you to use set up the eGIRO online as the approval is instant. However, if you still prefer not to do it online, you may download the Interbank GIRO application form via our  website .  Please send the original copy to us for processing.  It will take between 14 to 60 days for the approval.

  • Download and complete our  Interbank GIRO Application Form
  • Mail the original signed Interbank GIRO Application Form to:
  • Download and complete our  Credit Card Authorisation Form (SGD)  or  Credit Card Authorisation Form (USD)
  • Email the signed Credit Card Authorisation Form to  [email protected] .
  • Login to your Maybank or DBS/POSB ibanking
  • Select  Etiqa Insurance-Life  (Maybank account holder) or  Etiqa-Life Insurance  (DBS/POSB account holder) as the billing organisation under the bill payment tab
  • Input the Policy Number(s) under Reference
