Clutch Pro Tour events to receive official world ranking points

  • Nelly Korda claims fifth consecutive win

clutch pro tour players

The Official World Golf Ranking has announced that it is to begin awarding ranking points to the Clutch Pro Tour , whose events comprise just 54 holes.

The Clutch Pro Tour, which is an official feeder tour to the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour, has been included into the OWGR system after a 17-month application process and will be able to start awarding points from April 28 onwards.

Each Clutch Pro Tour event comprises three 18-hole rounds, with a 36-hole cut. Its 2024 qualifying series was staged in the United Arab Emirates and, for its 2025 season, there will be a new open qualifying school. Its events are largely held in the south and southeast of England, although there was one tournament staged in Northern Ireland and one in Wales last year.

Explaining its decision, OWGR chairman Peter Dawson said: “The Clutch Pro Tour has played a pivotal role in the United Kingdom – particularly since the closure of the EuroPro Tour. Its organisation has provided the continuation of playing opportunities and pathways for players to progress to the European Challenge Tour and the DP World Tour. It also provides local and regional players opportunities, culminating with a season-ending Championship. As such, the Clutch Pro Tour is in keeping with long-standing OWGR Eligibility and Format Criteria.”

“This is a significant milestone for golf”

Dawson added: “This is a significant milestone for golf, and we look forward to watching the progress of the Clutch Pro Tour as it continues to play a key role in the development of players from the region.”

clutch pro tour players

Since its launch in 2019, the Clutch Pro Tour has established itself as the leading golf event provider in the UK, filling the void created by the closure of the EuroPro Tour at the end of the 2022 season. It changed its name to the Mizuno Next Gen Series for the 2023 season following a sponsorship deal with the Japanese equipment brand, a partnership that remains in place for 2024.

It was announced in December 2022 that the Clutch Pro Tour and the Tartan Pro Tour – Paul Lawrie’s Scottish-based circuit – would become official feeder tours to the Challenge Tour, initially with the top two players on the Clutch Order of Merit graduating to the second tier of European golf. That has been extended to the top three players for the 2024 season.

LIV Golf’s application for its players to be awarded OWGR points for its 14-tournament series of 54-hole events was turned down earlier this year on the basis that entry to the league was mainly by invitation, with only three players earning places in this year’s series after taking part in a new qualification event held in Dubai, and that LIV Golf League events do not feature a cut.

CLUTCH PRO TOUR

The Governing Board of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) today announces the inclusion of the Clutch Pro Tour into the OWGR System.

The Clutch Pro Tour provides access to its official tournaments, conducted over 54 holes with a 36-hole cut, via its 2024 qualifying series held in the UAE and, for its 2025 season, an annual open qualifying school. It also provides local and regional players opportunities, culminating with a no-cut, season-ending Championship. As such, the Clutch Pro Tour is in keeping with long-standing OWGR Eligibility and Format Criteria.

The Clutch Pro Tour has played a pivotal role in the United Kingdom – particularly since the closure of the EuroPro Tour. Its organization has provided the continuation of playing opportunities and pathways for players to progress to the European Challenge Tour and the DP World Tour.

“This is a significant milestone for golf, and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in developing the sport of golf in the United Kingdom. We look forward to watching the progress of the Clutch Pro Tour as it continues to play a key role in the development of players from the region,” said Chairman Peter Dawson.

After a 17-month-long application process, in which the Tour worked continuously toward the standards required to become an OWGR Eligible Golf Tour, the Clutch Pro Tour will become an OWGR Eligible Golf Tour from Week 17, week ending 28th April 2024, and its official Tier 1 tournaments, in accordance with OWGR Regulations, will be eligible for inclusion in the Ranking.

John-Ross Galbraith shot an opening four-under 67 to lead the Irish assault in first round of the Clutch Pro tournament at The Players Club in Bristol, the Whitehead man currently lying T5.

Despite opening with a bogey-five as he took on the back nine first, a birdie blitz from 12 through 17 saw him make the turn at -3, and he’d trade two birdies with one bogey to pick up another stroke on the front side and reach the clubhouse at -4, just one back from the four-way tie for first.

Cameron Raymond is next best placed of the nine-strong Irish contingent in attendance. Raymond lies in a tie for 16th at -1, one stroke ahead of Conor O’Rourke who sits level-par and tied for 32nd.

Jason Murphy (+3), Rowan Lester and Daniel Brennan (+4), Owen Crooks and Daniel Mulligan (+5), and Eoin O’Brien (+7) complete the lineup at the Players Club’s flagship Codrington Course.

Wales’ James Frazer and three Englishmen in the shape of Tom Shadbolt, Jake Ayres and Jake Hapgood set the pace on day one with matching five-under 66s, with Galbraith part a four-way tie for fifth a shot adrift and a further three players tied for ninth at -3.

Besides Frazer, Galbraith is the only other non-Englishman a the sharp end of the leaderboard as we head to day two of the three-day affair which will see a 36-hole cut for the top-50 and ties.

Jack Yule (Eng) shot rounds of 66, 73 and 68 for a three round total of 207, nine under par, to win the £30,000 Al Zorah Championship on the Clutch Pro Tour at Al Zorah Golf Club, Ajman.

The 29 year-old champion wins a cheque for £5,000 and gains a spot in the $300,000 UAE Challenge on the Challenge Tour to be held at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Thursday 25th – Sunday 28th April, 2024.

Yule won by two shots from Jake Babnik (Slo) and Gary Stal (Fr) with a final round containing an impressive seven birdies and three bogeys.

Leading amateur was James Nash (Wales) on three under par in 12th place overall.

Yule said. ‘It is the first time I have been in the UAE - I absolutely love it. I holed a lot of yardage with my putter – but also had a few three putts – but in the end it tends to even itself out. This win here at Al Zorah and the Challenge Tour opportunity sets up my season nicely.’

As many as 140 players competed in the second and final leg of the UAE Clutch Pro Series, which was open to both men and women, amateurs and pros.

Dubai born Natalii Gupta won the female aggregate division for the two UAE 54-hole events. The 19 year-old amateur, plays off a +2 handicap and represents The Els Club, Dubai and gains four invites to Clutch Pro Tour events this 2024 season.

Robert Fiala of the EGF said: “‘It is great to have the Clutch Pro Tour here in the UAE for the first time. We are excited to see such events offering opportunities for both male and female golfers on our EGF calendar and we look forward to enhancing a close relationship for the good of UAE based players as well as international golfers.”

The UAE Clutch Pro Tour events are sanctioned by the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and is a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) qualifier, supported by The R&A for the participating amateurs.

Dubai-born amateur Natalii Gupta finished the Clutch Pro Tour’s Al Hamra Championship with an impressive 70 to finish the tournament as the leading UAE-based player in sixth place on two under par.

It was an impressive outing for the 19-year-old, who beat a number of professionals in the 54-hole event at Al Hamra Golf Club, where the development circuit made its UAE debut before its second event of the series next week at Al Zorah Golf Club.

“I played well all week, I was pleased with my all-round game,” said Gupta, who carded rounds of 71, 73 and 70.

“I have not played here at Al Hamra Golf Club for many years since I was a junior, so I’m happy with the result.

“I will be playing next week at Al Zorah, I have never played there before and I’m looking forward to it.”

Gupta finished seven shots back of champion Callan Barrow, who secured an invite into the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equesrtrian, Golf & Shooting Club next month with the victory.

Gupta

“I’m feeling pretty good,” said Barrow, who carded rounds of 69, 67 and 72 to top the leaderboard and win £5000.

“I’ve had a good winter prepping, so to come out and get the job done against a strong field feels really good.

“I think my all round my game was pretty good, like nothing was amazing, but nothing was really bad.

“I played in the Abu Dhabi Challenge last year but very badly! Hopefully I do better this year on a different course. At least I won’t have any bad memories playing there!”

This is the first time the Clutch Pro Tour, which is the official feeder Tour to the Challenge Tour, has held an event in the UAE. The circuit prides itself in being an 'open access' pro golf tour, offering high quality tournaments that provide a platform for player development.

The Emirates Golf Federation received 20 invitations into the event and next week’s Al Zorah Masters, the second of two events on the International Series, which have gone to young professionals in the region, local amateurs and UAE National Team players.

Mizuno golf – the clutch pro tour hits a new gear, renamed as ‘the mizuno next gen series’.

clutch pro tour players

May 31, 2022 – Mizuno has announced that its involvement with the Clutch Pro Tour is about to hit a new gear – and renamed ‘The Mizuno Next Gen Series’. Over 2022, the Mizuno Next Gen Series will offer 25 UK events with a total prize fund of £700,000 – including 6 ‘majors’, with 44 Challenge Tour, 5 DP World Tour and 1 LET invite on offer.

The multi-year title sponsorship deepens Mizuno’s investment in a tour that provides vital playing opportunities for young professionals in the UK.

clutch pro tour players

Tom Hayward , the founder of the Clutch Pro Tour believes that Mizuno’s involvement will provide a platform to increase the number and quality of events.

“Our goal was always to make the Tour sustainable. Young players need opportunities to play in a real tournament environment at quality venues. With practice balls, food and a prize fund to make it worth their while. So many talented players are forced to give up before finding out if they have what it takes. With Mizuno on board, we’re more secure, able to keep broadening those opportunities and extending the player’s limits.”

Mizuno’s Tour Operations Manager, Alex Thorne recognised that Mizuno’s renewed focus on emerging talent was closely aligned with the Clutch Pro Tour .

clutch pro tour players

“This is a huge move for Mizuno and reflects how much the professional game is changing.  Players at the elite end are now so well looked after – we’ve realised that Mizuno’s resources aren’t needed there from a financial perspective. The other end of the professional game is where the real challenges exist. Younger players need support with equipment, quality events to play in, and prize funds that enable them to make a living, as well as a route to the next level of the game. We’ve been so impressed with what The Clutch Pro Tour has given the game – this was a natural progression for both sides.”

In addition to increasing funding and becoming title sponsor, Mizuno will also look to recruit several younger players coming through the Tour.  In 2022 Mizuno announced its youngest ever tour team with 2-time Clutch Pro Tour winner OJ Farrell and 2020 British Amateur Champion Joe Long joining its ranks. Through association with the Tour, Mizuno expects to deepen its recruitment of young talent.

Alex Thorne continued: “There’s a legacy of world #1s and major winners to have played Mizuno equipment – and it’s our responsibility to make sure that continues. We believe the most meaningful way to do that is to work with young talented players and help them make those strides to the game’s elite level.”

When factoring in Gregg’s free housing, free caddie and free rental car, it’s evident that most LET players would have to finish well inside of the top-20 to make any money.

With ridiculous amounts of money being thrown around in professional golf these days, it’s important to remember the other side of the coin as well. There are countless professionals out there who struggle to get by on their golf salary.

54-hole golf tour deemed eligible for OWGR points…but it’s not LIV

clutch pro tour players

After a seventeen-month application process, a 54-hole golf tour was deemed eligible for OWGR points.

Unfortunately, for LIV Golf and their fans, it was the Clutch Pro Tour.

After the decision, which is effective immediately, OWGR chairman Peter Dawson issued a statement.

“This is a significant milestone for golf, and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in developing the sport of golf in the United Kingdom.”

“We look forward to watching the progress of the Clutch Pro Tour as it continues to play a key role in the development of players from the region,” Dawson added.

Charlie Woods attempting to qualify for spot at 2024 U.S. Open

clutch pro tour players

As first reported by  Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated , Charlie Woods will be attempting to qualify for this year’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

The first stage of qualifying for this year’s tournament will be an 18-hole local event on Thursday, April 25th, in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

There will be 84 players in the field, five of which will reach the 36-hole qualifier that will take place in June.

Earlier this season, Charlie attempted to qualify for the Cognizant Classic, and struggled, shooting an 86.

If the younger Woods is able to qualify, he will tee it up in the same field as his father in a few months at one of the more historic U.S. Open venues.
