A Look Inside Carnival’s Balcony Stateroom

Whether you’re sailing a three- or four- day getaway or a longer cruise, having a great stateroom is important. When my family of four sailed on the Carnival Freedom a few months ago, a Balcony Stateroom was our home for the week.

Inside Carnival Stateroom - blog pic

With two twin beds pushed together to make a king bed, a couch that converted to a single bed for Molly and a hidden bed for Maggie that was stored in the ceiling – the sleeping arrangements worked great for our family. The girls loved having bunk beds and I loved that our wonderful stateroom steward, Kate, took fantastic care of us each day.

Tips for Living in Carnival’s Balcony Stateroom

Unpack your suitcase – It’s the best way to stay organized and gives you more space too. Plus, your clothes won’t be all wrinkled from living in a suitcase the entire trip. There are two closets with plenty of hangers, one tall cabinet with shelving and three drawers at the adjacent desk.

Look under the bed – There’s tons of extra storage space under the bed. We stashed our suitcases there giving us more room in the closets.

Be mindful of electronics – During our sailing, our room had two electrical outlets. There are strict rules against power strips and similar items, so be aware when using curling irons, straighteners and charging electronics.

Splurge for a balcony  – We loved having the extra space to relax and the views were fantastic. Two chairs and a table – perfect spot.  Plus, with the kids in tow – once they were in bed each night, my husband and I could enjoy time together on the balcony. Order room service and enjoy the stars above!

Speaking of room service… every afternoon, we would take a family ‘time out’ and relax in the room. My girls loved having a sandwich from room service, watch a little television and just relax for a bit.

It was a nice retreat to take a break – and even nap. (Although, my girls didn’t do much of that on our trip!)

Overall, most Carnival Cruise Lines staterooms have the same interior look. Here’s a look at a Balcony stateroom on the Carnival Breeze that is identical to our stateroom on the Carnival Freedom .

7 Carnival Cruise Room Photos

When it comes time to book a cruise, what type of stateroom you want to book is sometimes one of the deciding factors in finalizing the booking. Here are the major stateroom categories offered on Carnival Cruise Line.

1. Upper/Lower Stateroom

Interior of Carnival's 4A Cabin

This cabin is configured for two people cruising together. It has the same amenities as an oceanview cabin, with a little less space. Instead of two twin-size convertible beds, this cabin has one twin bed and one bunk bed or sleeper sofa. Sleeps two guests.

2. Interior Stateroom

View of the Interior Cabin

This is one of the most affordable ways to cruise. There is no window (excellent sleeping!) and the same amenities as the other cabins. This cabin has the option of two twin beds that convert to a king. Depending on the configuration, some cabins can sleep up to three guests.

3. Porthole Stateroom

Porthole Cabin from Carnival

For the cruiser that wants a peek outside without the price tag of an oceanview cabin, the porthole cabin has the same amenities as an oceanview cabin, with two twin beds, convertible to a king. Sleeps up to three guests.

4. Oceanview Stateroom

the inside of Oceanview cabin

You can always have a view of what’s going on outside when you book an oceanview stateroom. Oceanview staterooms come with a panoramic window, two twin beds that are convertible to a king, and some ocean view rooms even have 1.5 bathrooms. Sleeps up to four guests.

5. Balcony Stateroom

balcony stateroom interior

A balcony stateroom is a pricier but more scenic option when cruising. Have your own sailaway party and space with your private balcony cabin.

A more affordable option is the Cove Balcony, which is located on the lower decks and is inset from the side of the ship. Balcony staterooms can sleep up to four people.

interior of junior suite

It is one of the most expensive stateroom categories on the cruise ship. There are a variety of suite classes, from a Junior Suite, Ocean Suite, to a Grand Suite, and on the newer ships, Family Harbor Suites.

Designed with space in mind, the suites typically have an extra changing room, more square footage, a larger balcony, and VIP check-in. Depending on the category, suites can sleep up to five guests.

7. Cloud 9 Spa Suites

cloud 9 balcony interior

One of the most popular and quick-to-sell categories across the Carnival fleet. This category has larger rooms, an expanded balcony size, and a whirlpool tub in every room.

You won’t find this on every ship. Cloud 9 Spa accommodations guests have private access to the spa and are eligible for exclusive spa packages and discounts.

Right now, these rooms are only available on Carnival Breeze, Carnival Dream, Carnival Splendor, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Magic , and soon-to-come Carnival Horizon.

Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Gene Sloan

Picking a cabin on a Carnival Cruise Line ship isn't nearly as complicated as picking a cabin on, say, a Royal Caribbean or a Celebrity Cruises ship.

Unlike some of its biggest competitors, Carnival isn't known for a huge range of cabin categories on its vessels.

That means that when you're trying to find the best Carnival cruise ship cabin for you, you'll have an easier time than you will when booking with some other lines.

The vast majority of the accommodations on Carnival ships fall into one of three broad buckets: Windowless "inside" cabins, oceanview cabins and balcony cabins.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

You'll find relatively few suites on Carnival ships. Each of the vessels in Carnival's recent Vista-class series, for instance, offer fewer than 75 suites. Each of the line's earlier Conquest-class ships have around 50 suites. The oldest Fantasy-class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites.

This is in part due to Carnival's focus on offering an affordable product. The typical Carnival customer isn't in the market for a super fancy, high-priced suite.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

That said, Carnival has seen the success that some of its competitors have had with a bigger range of upscale accommodations, and it's eyeing more suites for future vessels. The line's two newest ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , each have 180 suites — more than twice the number found on the vessels Carnival was unveiling a few years ago.

Note that Carnival's two oldest ships — those that are part of the 1990s-built Fantasy Class — have relatively few balcony cabins by today's standards. (After retrofitting, they have around 150 balcony cabins, out of a total of more than 1,000 cabins in all.) In part because of this, Carnival has been phasing Fantasy-class ships out of its fleet in recent years.

A Carnival Cruise Line cabin primer

carnival cruise ship balcony room pictures

As is typical for many cruise ships, Carnival vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, oceanview cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

On newer Carnival ships, a significant portion of cabins are balcony cabins — the rooms everyone wants these days. But the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins on Carnival's newer ships isn't nearly as high as on the newer ships of some rival lines such as Royal Caribbean.

About 44% of the 2,004 cabins on Carnival's Carnival Panorama (launched in 2019) are balcony cabins, for instance. Compare that to the 65% of cabins on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas (launched in 2018) that are balcony cabins.

As noted above, Carnival ships also have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships of some of its rival lines. By contrast, the line's newer ships have a higher percentage of inside cabins than you'll find on the newer ships of some rival lines.

Here's a breakdown of the broad cabin categories on Carnival Panorama, which is typical of the line's newer ships:

Inside cabins: 789 (39%) Oceanview cabins: 254 (13%) Balcony cabins: 891 (44%) Suites: 70 (3%)

On older Carnival ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are far fewer balcony cabins. Fewer than 10% of cabins on the line's two oldest vessels, Carnival Paradise and Carnival Elation, are balcony cabins. The two ships date to 1998.

On both Carnival Paradise and Carnival Elation, inside cabins and ocean-view cabins make up the majority (nearly 90%) of accommodations, and suites account for fewer than 10% of rooms. Here is the breakdown for Carnival Paradise:

Inside cabins: 420 (40%) Oceanview cabins: 466 (44%) Balcony cabins: 98 (9%) Suites: 78 (7%)

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a balcony cabin on an older Carnival ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a balcony cabin is a must, you'll want to book early to make sure you get one.

You'll also want to book early if you're aiming for a suite — particularly if you want one of the best suites on a Carnival ship. An old saw in the cruise industry is that "ships sell from the top and the bottom." That is, the first cabins on any vessel to sell out are the most expensive cabins, which are the suites, and the least expensive cabins, which typically are the inside cabins. The "middle" sells last.

Design-wise, Carnival's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish. Cabins on recently unveiled or overhauled vessels mostly have a soothing palette of creams and blues. Cabinetry in these rooms is a crisp and clean faux wood. Cabin bathrooms are neutral.

One exception is the new Carnival Venezia , which has a darker (faux) wood finish to furniture in cabins that ties into the ship's Italy theme.

Inside cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Inside cabins are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Carnival ship, they almost always are the least-expensive option when you're booking a cabin, and you often can save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world.

On many cruise ships, inside cabins are smaller than oceanview and balcony cabins. But on Carnival ships, that's not always the case. On Carnival Panorama, for instance, most inside cabins measure 185 square feet. That's the same size as the interior area of some oceanview and most balcony cabins on the ship (not including the extra square footage from the balcony).

Related: Why inside cabins aren't as bad as you think

Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean's new Wonder of the Seas , by contrast, measure just 149 square feet — quite a bit less than the inside cabins on Carnival Panorama.

Note that, in a quirk of the cabin categorization system at Carnival, there are a few inside cabins on some Carnival ships that do, indeed, have a view to the outside world. These cabins either have an obstructed view (often due to lifeboats) or a porthole, such that the view isn't all that great. For that reason, the line classifies them as inside cabins.

Oceanview cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

With an oceanview cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Carnival's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as generally cabins that face outwards now are built with balconies. But older Carnival ships are loaded with oceanview cabins.

Oceanview cabins on Carnival ships can sometimes be bigger than inside cabins and even bigger than balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). On Carnival Panorama, some oceanview cabins measure 185 square feet — the same as inside cabins. But there also are bigger "standard" oceanview cabins that measure 220 square feet and "deluxe" oceanview cabins that measure 230 square feet.

Related: The 5 best cabin locations on any cruise ship

Balcony cabins on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Carnival is building its newest ships with far more of them than in the past. As noted above, about 44% of the cabins Carnival Panorama are balcony cabins. But that percentage jumped to 56% on the newer Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. It will be the same on Carnival Jubilee, a sister vessel to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration coming out in December 2023.

The typical Carnival balcony cabin has a contemporary look, with clean lines and relatively minimalist furniture. It typically features twin beds that can be converted into a king bed, a built-in desk area and a sofa that often pulls out into an additional bed. Some rooms have pull-down bunks to create more sleeping spaces. Balcony cabins typically measure around 185 square feet, not including the veranda area, which often measures 35 square feet.

carnival cruise ship balcony room pictures

Note that on some Carnival ships, specific categories of balcony cabins have larger balconies than most. These are wonderful for sitting out and watching the waves. Often these rooms are at the back of the ships overlooking the wake.

Related: 6 reasons to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

For instance, Carnival Panorama has "Family Harbor" and "Havana" balcony cabins with 60-square-foot balconies overlooking the wake. That's 71% more balcony space than the typical balcony cabin on the ship.

Carnival Panorama also has "Havana Cabana" balcony cabins with even bigger, 100-square-foot balconies.

Suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

As noted above, Carnival ships generally don't offer a lot of suites. For the most part, the suites they have are relatively modest in size and amenities compared to the suites at some of the line's rivals.

The biggest suites on Carnival Panorama, the ship's eight Grand Suites, have 345 square feet of interior space, plus an 85-square-foot balcony. Contrast that to the biggest suites on Royal Caribbean ships, which can measure more than 1,500 square feet.

Suites on Carnival ships also haven't traditionally come with butlers and access to private concierge lounges like the suites on many other vessels.

Related: This amazing new cruise ship suite measures more than 4,000 square feet

Still, some of that has begun to change with the debut of Carnival's new Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Carnival went big with the suites on the groundbreaking, 5,282-passenger vessels — the biggest Carnival ships ever.

Unveiled in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration each feature two sprawling Presidential Suites that measure 1,120 square feet — bigger than any other accommodations in the line's fleet.

carnival cruise ship balcony room pictures

Located at the top of each ship on Deck 17, the complexes have separate living and sleeping areas and the most expansive balconies in the Carnival fleet — all unusual-for-Carnival features. Measuring more than 600 square feet, the balconies also offer a lounging area with a large sunbed and a private outdoor hot tub and shower.

Related: 7 reasons you should splurge for a suite on a cruise ship

The Presidential Suites are among 180 suites you will find on Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, the most ever for a Carnival ship.

The two ships have 11 different categories of suites in all, four of which are part of a new premium "Excel" category of suites with extra amenities and access to a new-for-the-line, resort-style enclave at the top of the ships called Loft 19.

carnival cruise ship balcony room pictures

In addition to the two Presidential Suites, the Excel suites include a dozen 861-square-foot Excel Aft Suites that overlook the back of each ship and boast separate living rooms and bedrooms and large wraparound balconies with hot tubs.

Slightly smaller are a dozen 710-square-foot Excel Corner Suites offering separate sleeping and lounging areas and wraparound balconies. A step down are six smaller Excel Suites that measure 614 square feet.

Every one of the suites in those categories is bigger than any suite found on Carnival Panorama.

Passengers staying in all four categories of Excel suites on Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration have access to a dedicated concierge phone line and guaranteed dining times at the extra-charge specialty restaurants found on the ships (except for Japanese eatery Bonsai Teppanyaki and the Chef's Table). Other upgraded amenities for Excel suite passengers include complimentary Bottomless Bubbles soda packages, room service and laundry service, sparkling wine upon arrival and upgraded bathroom toiletries.

The new Loft 19 enclave found on both Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration offers full bar service, a private pool surrounded by sun loungers and cabanas available for rent.

Bottom Line

Fun-focused Carnival offers a solid mix of cabins on its vessels for a range of price points. If you're looking for an inexpensive vacation option, the inside cabins on Carnival ships are more spacious than the inside cabins you'll find on the ships of some rival lines. Oceanview cabins on Carnival ships also can be larger than normal for the category. Balcony cabins on Carnival ships hold their own in size against most competitors. Just don't expect a huge number of suites when sailing with Carnival.

Inside carnival’s cheapest $90-a-day, windowless cabin on its firenze ship.

An Italian-themed Carnival Cruise ship offers the line’s discount-rated cheapest rooms — but you’ll have to sacrifice having a view.

The four-year-old Firenze, anchored in Long Beach, California has 44, tiny “interior” cabins with no windows nor balcony that can cost about $90 per night, according to reports.

A deal with Costco advertises trips on the four-year-old 4,000-plus capacity ship can go for even cheaper at $564, taxes included. Business Insider reported that it can cost $360 apiece, or about $90 a day.

The Firenze cruise ship was panned for having some cramped quarters.

Other than having some cost-efficiency, a vacation onboard the Firenze doesn’t exactly feel like you’ve seas-ed the day, according to one review.

“It might’ve been the ugliest cabin I’ve ever stayed in,” Business Insider’s Brittany Chang bluntly wrote of her cramped quarters over four nights to Ensenada, Mexico with a stop at Catalina Island in California.

carnival cruise ship balcony room pictures

It was about 150 feet in total space.

The ship doesn’t have any alternative solo cabins beyond the accessible, according to ThePointsGuy .

Aside from the cheap cost, the room was torn for looking “quadruple” its young age from dates furniture. The bathroom was also compared to a gas station’s.

“Did it feel more like a hospital room than a floating hotel room? Yes,” Business Insider reported.

However, some redeeming qualities were reported as well.

“It’s chaotic and a lot to take in, but somehow it works,” according to a review Ashley Kosciolek wrote for ThePointsGuy.

The small room is less than 200 feet.

“Passengers can have their photos taken with a Vespa-style scooter and grab Italian-themed burgers and meatball sandwiches at new iterations of some of Carnival’s most popular eateries.”

Trivia, movies, and games were noted for creating a lively atmosphere — as were the spa, waterslides, ropes course, and gym.

One reviewer said the bathroom evoked that of a gas station's facilities.

Still, it was panned for feeling too crowded on a trip well below full capacity.

An American adaptation of Italian culture — the ship is named for Florence after all — is also present just about anywhere you go. Photos evoke a similar sensation to walking around The Venetian in Las Vegas.

“The Italian vibe carries through everything you do on board,” she added. “It will either make you smile or roll your eyes. Regardless, it’s a lot of fun.”

"A cruise from hell": Raw sewage in my cabin on Holland America!

A ngus Urquhart has a problem with his Holland America cruise — a big problem. He says he had to endure a “cruise from hell,” which included raw sewage in his cabin and an air conditioner that didn’t work, and he wants a refund.

Cruise problems are a regular feature of our advocacy. But when Urquhart’s case crossed my desk, it floated to the top of my to-do list. What happened to him is beyond disgusting — and he has the pictures to prove it. (I’ll get to that in a moment.)

But his cruise problem is also a remarkable story about how connecting with the right person can make a difference and that self-advocacy is a powerful tool for resolving an issue with Holland America or any other cruise line. (Here are some more cruise mistakes you’ll want to avoid .)

“We are very sorry for the stateroom issues encountered on his cruise and the disappointment and frustration he encountered,” a Holland America said when asked about his case.

“We have just experienced a cruise from hell”

Urquhart’s problems with Holland America started almost the moment he boarded the Oosterdam for an Italy cruise this summer.

“We had raw sewage filling the toilet in our suite multiple times every day of our cruise,” he says. “The staff tried to fix the problem but could not.”

Then it got worse. Halfway through the cruise, with temperatures near an infernal 110 degrees, the air conditioning stopped working.

Urquhart and his wife, Susan, requested a different cabin. No can do, a Holland America representative told them — there were no vacant rooms on the ship.

“We spent countless hours on the ship dealing with this issue and watched them carry buckets of sewage through our suite and had to endure disgusting odors and sights. Our balcony was also a filthy mess,” he says. “We have just experienced a cruise from hell.”

Oh no, not another poop cruise!

You’ve probably read about plumbing problems on cruises before, maybe in the comments on this site. But the worst incident to date happened on February 10, 2013.

The Carnival Triumph , which was cruising through the Gulf of Mexico, suffered an engine fire. Although crewmembers quickly extinguished the blaze, the ship lost power. Raw sewage started to back up. Passengers reported seeing bags of human waste on the deck.

Making matters worse, the ship drifted back toward the coast of the United States as it waited for a seagoing tugboat. The Triumph had planned to get towed to a port in Mexico. The currents delayed their rescue. Passengers had to wait four days before leaving the infamous “poop cruise.”

Carnival reportedly knew that there were engine problems but failed to act.

After that disaster, the last thing any cruise line wants is a story about sewage backing up on one of its ships.

He tried to resolve the problem with his cruise, but …

Needless to say, overflowing toilets and nonworking air conditioning are not cool on any cruise. But Urquhart’s case was special. He’d paid extra for an upgrade to a suite and had sunk $9,600 into his 12-night Italy vacation.

I can only imagine what it must have been like — sweating in a foul-smelling suite in the middle of the Mediterranean for almost two weeks. You don’t need any waves to make you nauseous.

Urquhart followed our advice on resolving a cruise problem by immediately asking Holland America to adjust his bill.  This isn’t the first complaint we’ve received about Holland America .

“A Holland America representative on the ship offered us a $600 per person future cruise credit,” he recalls. “I told him that was not acceptable. He said I should contact Holland America headquarters when I get home.” ( Related : Smoked out of my suite on the Carnival Miracle .)

Urquhart reached out to Holland America through its site, the next step of the Elliott Method escalation process .

The cruise line upped its offer. But was that enough?

Holland America: “We sincerely regret the stateroom plumbing problems you encountered”

Here’s Holland America’s “final” offer after he complained:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your sailing on ms Oosterdam. We truly appreciate your feedback; knowing your personal experience is important to us and we deeply regret the disappointment and frustration you encountered.  We sincerely regret the stateroom plumbing problems you encountered. It is our goal to provide the best possible experience for our guests and we acknowledge the difficulty that can arise when personal facilities are not in working order.  Because our ships sail nearly continuously, repair of onboard systems is at times necessary. Shipboard personnel do their utmost to address such issues and endeavor to alleviate any problems as quickly and completely as possible. We are very sorry that in this situation the solution was not timely or satisfactory and apologize again for the inconvenience. We’re sorry to hear you had difficulty with the climate control on your cruise. Every suite and stateroom aboard our ships should be a comfortable and welcoming space for our guests. Of course, maintenance needs do arise from time to time, and our shipboard Guest Relations staff and maintenance personnel do their utmost to address such matters as quickly as possible. We apologize that this issue occurred and regret if our onboard team was unable to offer a suitable and timely solution. In an effort to show our concern and in appreciation for your patronage, we would like to offer you Future Cruise Credits for $1000.00 per person USD. These will be attached to your mariner account; these credits are good for one year from the date of this communication. Thank you once more for contacting our office. Feedback from our Mariners is vital in our mission to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every time, and we hope to share many more voyages with you.

Can Holland America do better?

Urquhart’s response? Also unacceptable.

“I appreciate that someone finally got back to me,” he says. “Unfortunately, our cruise was ruined! We spent countless hours dealing with the guest relations staff and the maintenance staff. This cruise was to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and she spent that evening crying! We had raw sewage filling our Neptune Suite toilet, and every time we entered the bathroom, it brought on nausea, vomiting or dry heaves!”

Urquhart turned down Holland America’s offer in writing on August 1.

And the cruise line’s response? Dead silence.

“Holland America hasn’t responded to any of my emails since then,” he says.

How to fix a problem with your cruise

Holland America has a decent reputation for customer service, scoring 3 out of 5 on our customer responsiveness scale. Here are our executive contacts and scoring methodology for Holland America.

We have a few cases going back more than two decades, but nothing scandalous. They include a couple with a problem involving a changed port on an Antarctic cruise and a case where one of our readers boarded a cruise that had a little norovirus issue .

So how do you fix a problem with a company like Holland America?

The best way to resolve most cruise problems is in real time. In my experience of advocating cases for three decades, I’ve found that waiting until you get home will diminish your chances of a successful outcome. Urquhart followed that rule, asking Holland America to address his problem right away.

Overflowing sewage is a health hazard, and in my opinion, he shouldn’t have stayed in his cabin. I would have insisted that the cruise line move him or disembark him at the next port, pay for his return flight and refund his cruise.

Climb the appeals ladder

You have to give the system a chance to work. Let the staff know of the problem while you’re on the ship, then appeal to a manager, then take it to the top. Give each rung of the ladder — crew, supervisors, managers — plenty of time to respond.

Holland America knew the Urquhart had a bad cruise, and with every step, the seriousness of their problem became clearer. The only thing I didn’t see in Urquhart’s paper trail of correspondence between him and Holland America was the final appeal to Holland America’s vice president for food, beverage and guest services, and ultimately to its president. But I shared that information with them, and I’ll have the outcome in a minute.

The nuclear option, of course, is a credit card dispute . But it would have been complicated because Urquhart only wanted a partial refund. His bank might have allowed him to do a partial dispute, but it’s more likely he would have ended up disputing the entire $9,600. Even if he had won it, he would have lost because Holland America would have suspended his Mariner Society membership and might have added him to its Do Not Sail list.

Likewise, a trip to small claims court might have yielded a judgment in his favor, but it would have torpedoed his relationship with Holland America. Again, he might have lost his frequent-cruiser benefits or been banned from cruising again.

There is another option — he could have contacted my advocacy team . And that’s exactly what he did.

What would make this right?

I asked Urquhart what would make this problem with his Holland America cruise right.

He said he wanted a 50 percent refund of the $9,600 he spent on the cruise. And he doesn’t want it to expire, as the $1,000 future cruise credit would.

“I think that’s more than fair,” he said. “We have so far not posted anything on social media or started legal action, and we will not, if Holland America agrees to settle this for our very fair request.”

Urquhart finally used the executive contacts to appeal his case to a higher level at Holland America. And he told them what he wanted.

And that did it! The cruise line offered a refund of the $2,000 he had paid for an upgrade to a suite, as well as a no-charge upgrade to a suite on his next cruise. That worked for him.

“We are glad that we have reached a resolution with him and that he will be sailing with us again soon,” a Holland America spokesman added.

I love that resolution. We’re all about self-advocacy at this site, and Urquhart’s case is a terrific example of using the right information to achieve a fair outcome.

How do you solve a problem with a cruise? Here's one Holland America passenger who had raw sewage in his cabin. And this is how he fixed it.
