Greece & Turkey Tours and Trips 2024/2025

Located on the eastern edge of Europe, both Turkey and Greece are rich in history, culture and natural beauty. Popular with travelers for their beautiful weather, stunning coastlines along the Lycian Way, and amazing architecture and ruins at Delos and Ephesus, Turkey and Greece are a match made in heaven for a dual-nation tour. Taking a combined tour of these two neighboring countries offers visitors the opportunity to dive into two ancient, but distinct cultures, sights and foods.

Greece and Turkey — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Beach towns in Greece and Turkey serve up a delicious breakfast.

Tour Highlights

  • Head for an Aegean escape starting in Kusadasi . Combine the relaxing natural beach landscapes of Santorini with the small-town island charm of Mykonos, all while weaving in historical sites from across the two nations. Marvel at the Acropolis or enjoy the mecca of Ancient Greece on the island of Delos on a Greece and Turkey tour that marries culture and history.
  • Gaze at the wonders of the Mediterranean by hopping across the stunning Greek islands and taking in the incredible architectures and temples that have stood for millennia at Delos and Samos. Travel via ferry between the sun-drenched and historic isles of Santorini and Mykonos, before journeying across to Kusadasi in Turkey.
  • Commence your 15-day of cycling tour on the stunning Greek island of Rhodes, before tracing the coastline around Turkey on an active Greek and Turkey tour. Discover Turkish cuisine in Patara, visit the ancient city of Myra, where the tour gets biblical, and keep yourself inspired as you gazer out across the turquoise sea.
  • A classic escorted tour of Greece and Turkey can hit all the hotspots from the naturally occurring geological wonders of Pamukkale to the historic ruins of Athens and Ephesus. Explore the natural landscapes, learn more about history, or just kick back and relax on the beach.
  • For one of the best cultural tours in Greece and Turkey, follow a historical and biblical Greek and Turkey tour that winds through towns and cities of the past. Learn about the ancient art of carpet weaving, see the Temple of Apollo, and wander the hallowed and famous steps along the Silk Road.

Travel Tips

  • One of the best ways to get around Turkey and Greece is by boat. As there are so many islands and huge stretches of coastline, the water is the way forward.
  • Although there are a lot of ATMs in main towns and cities, many small businesses and restaurants still do not accept cards, especially for small purchases like coffee.
  • Despite the reputation that Greece and Turkey have for scorching weather, the winter months are drastically colder, with Turkey receiving snowfall in its prominent ski resorts.
  • Most travelers can visit Greece visa-free, but not Turkey. So make sure you apply for a Turkey visa well in advance.

Recommended Duration for a Greece and Turkey Tour

To enjoy the best combined tour of Greece and Turkey, we recommend setting aside at least 14 days. The duration affords you ample opportunity to live out your Mamma Mia fantasies on Mykonos, explore the ruins of Ephesus , stretch your legs on the Lycian Way, and chill out on the beaches of Santorini.

Best Times to go on a Greece and Turkey Tour

The best times to visit Greece and Turkey are in either April-May, or September-November. This way you can avoid the oppressive heat and crowds of the summer months. Also, a lot of coastal businesses and resorts shut down in the low season (November-March) due to the lack of tourism, so it is best to avoid this period unless you are visiting a ski resort in Turkey.

FAQs for Greece and Turkey Tour

Is it easy traveling between Greece and Turkey? It is relatively easy to travel between Greece and Turkey, with plenty of ferries going between Greek islands and the Turkish mainland. If you are traveling from the Greek mainland, you can either fly, drive, or take one of the many regular buses. Unfortunately, there is no longer a train route between the two countries.

How do I arrange a visa for a combined Greece and Turkey tour? Greece is in the Schengen Zone so many nationals, including the US, Canadian and Australian, can enter the country and stay for up to 90 days. You will, however, need a visa to enter Turkey. As Turkey has an e-visa service, you can apply online before you travel to the country.

How long is the ferry between Greece and Turkey? Depending whereabouts in Greece you are departing from, ferries to Turkey can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. Of course, some of the Greek islands are much closer to the Turkish mainland than others, and some have more established routes that may be faster and more regular.

Day-by-day itinerary

tours greece and turkey

Board your overnight flight to Athens today.

Welcome to Greece! Land in Athens, Europe’s oldest capital city and “the cradle of Western civilization.” Transfer to your hotel and relax for a while before meeting your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine.

Meet up with a local guide for an introduction to Greece’s bustling capital, home to the world’s first democracy and over 3,400 years of recorded history.

  • Pass by three points of interest: the Panathenaic Stadium, Syntagma Square, and the Arch of Hadrian. Now home to various local soccer teams, the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely out of marble—the only such stadium in the world. Syntagma Square memorializes the signing of the first Greek constitution in 1844, following an armed rebellion against the rule of King Otto. Carved from marble and standing since the second century, the Arch of Hadrian is an iconic landmark of modern-day Athens.
  • View the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Built less than a kilometer from the Acropolis, this structure dates back to the sixth century B.C. and, when intact, was the largest temple in Ancient Greece.
  • See the classically inspired Old Royal Palace, home of the Hellenic Parliament, and drive through Plaka—the historic “neighborhood of the gods” built in the shadow of the Acropolis.
  • Set off on a walking tour around the Acropolis of Athens, a millennia-old, UNESCO-listed citadel and the enduring image of Greece. First properly developed by the renowned politician Pericles, it now contains the ruins of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, Erechtheion, and dozens of other archaeological sites.

Enjoy a free afternoon in Athens or add an excursion.

Greek Tavern Evening

From $75 per person

Enjoy a free day in Athens or add an excursion. (Love Greek mythology? You’ll love this excursion to Delphi: the place the ancients considered to be the center of the world.)

From $119 per person

Make your way to Piraeus—Athens’ port and the largest passenger terminal in Europe— to board your Greek cruise ship. Get settled in your stateroom and enjoy an included lunch and dinner (with plenty of relaxation in between) as you sail to iconic Mykonos. Rising out of the Aegean Sea, this rocky Cycladic Island ranks as one of the most popular in all of Greece.

  • Disembark and join your Tour Director for an evening walk through the island’s charming Old Town. Dubbed Chora (simply “town”), Mykonos’ main settlement is a beautiful network of brilliant white homes, cerulean doors, and pops of bougainvillea.
  • See the island’s windmills—some of which are visible from any point in the old town—the seaside Little Venice neighborhood, and the 17th-century Church of Panagia Paraportiani.
  • Enjoy free time to explore Chora’s vibrant, labyrinthine alleys, made even more dazzling by the Mykonian moonlight.

Continue sailing along the Aegean Sea and disembark for a tour of Santorini, a popular vacation destination known for its black-sand beaches, cliff-lined shores, and archetypal Cycladic architecture. (Blue domes, white walls—you know what we mean!)

  • Upon arrival, meet your local guide and take a tender boat to port, where you’ll transfer to the picturesque village of Oia.
  • Take in views of Santorini’s famous caldera, the legacy of an eruption that decimated the area in 1600 B.C.
  • Head to Fira, the island’s clifftop capital and cultural center, for some time to yourself.
  • Return to your ship for an included lunch or stay in town for a while longer, enjoying panoramic vistas and famous landmarks like the aptly named Three Bells of Fira.

Set sail for Rhodes and sit down for an included dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine, aboard the ship this evening.

Today, disembark in Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands and the former site of an ancient wonder of the world: the Colossus of Rhodes. Forged from bronze and iron in the third century B.C., this statue of the Greek sun-god Helios once stood as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

  • Experience the island’s one-of-a-kind cultural heritage at your leisure or sign up for a shore excursion.
  • Return to the ship for an included lunch or continue exploring Rhodes in your free time. If you’re looking for a recommendation, we’d suggest visiting its walled Old Town. Fortified by the Knights of Saint John over the course of three centuries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by a 2.5-mile-long wall and contains a collection of Christian and Muslim monuments.

Return to your ship this evening for an included dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine, and chart a course for the Turkish coast.

Please note: Travelers will be able to add shore excursions directly through the cruise line once on board.

Disembark your cruise in Çeşme, Turkey, and meet your new Tour Director. Then, transfer to Alaçatı, a charming seaside town with an interesting place in history. First settled by Greek Orthodox Christians in the 17th century, it underwent a significant shift in 1923 when, in the aftermath of the Greco-Turkish War, a treaty dictating a population exchange between the two countries was signed.

Join your Tour Director for a short walking tour of Alaçatı’s twisting streets, stone houses, and boutique shops before enjoying free time to explore on your own. Later, stop at a local winery to sample some of the Urla Wine Route’s fine vintages. Enjoy a tasting, paired with local snacks, before continuing on to your hotel in the Ephesus region, a historic area on Turkey’s west coast. Tonight, sit down for an included dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine.

Please note: On tours departing in March, April, May, September, and October, the cruise will disembark in Kuşadası. In this case, day 8’s activities will shift to day 9.

Join your Tour Director on a guided tour of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek cities in the Mediterranean region.

  • Discover its UNESCO-listed sites including the Library of Celsus (one of the last extant examples of the ancient world’s great libraries) and the ruins of the Basilica of St. John (said to have been built over the final resting place of John the Apostle).
  • View the 2,300-year-old Great Theatre, a hulking 25,000-seat arena that’s used as a performance venue to this day.
  • Step inside the House of the Virgin Mary, a Catholic shrine where the Virgin Mary is said to have spent her final days.

Spend a free evening in the Ephesus region or add an excursion to a meyhane—a traditional Turkish wine house.

Please note: On tours that depart in March, April, May, September, or October, today’s activities will shift to Day 8.

Traditional Turkish Meyhane Dinner

Head north along the Aegean coast to Bursa, stopping by the ruins of Pergamon en route. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this settlement was once a powerful Ancient Greek city.

  • Take a cable car to the top of the Acropolis, where you’ll find the ruins of ancient Greek temples; a 10,000-capacity Hellenistic age theater; a gymnasium; and the once-great Library of Pergamon—the second largest in the Ancient Greek world after the Library of Alexandria.

  • In order to enter Greece and Turkey, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • There is no visa required to enter Turkey for U.S. or Canadian citizens.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code GTR.
  • You will walk for about two hours daily across moderately uneven terrain, including cobblestone streets, dirt paths, wooden platforms, and some hills and steps.
  • You should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of ferries.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special, individual mobility assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group as a whole enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide ongoing assistance to any one traveler.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • You will have two separate Tour Directors on this tour: one for Greece and one for Turkey.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Athens and depart from Istanbul. When you first arrive, a representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. If you don’t see them, please remain in the arrival lounge: They might be escorting one of your fellow travelers.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who’ve purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchased their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
  • A three-night Greek Islands cruise is included in the price of your tour.
  • A round-trip flight between Istanbul and either Kayseri or Nevşehir is included in the price of the tour extension.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches, ferries, flights, and other modes of transportation.
  • Contact your airline(s) for the luggage restrictions for your itinerary. Please note that on-tour flights may have tighter size and weight limits than your round-trip airfare to and from tour.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any bags or exceed their size and weight restrictions. Be advised: You’re responsible for any luggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • Churches, mosques, and other religious sites require visitors to cover bare legs and shoulders; you may be denied entry on this basis. Women should bring a light scarf or a head covering.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your healthcare provider, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov , for the latest updates and entry requirements.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour, as well as any possible delays you may encounter.
  • Please note that codeine (commonly found in headache medications) is banned in Greece, and you may face prosecution if you bring it into the country.
  • Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications may be banned in Turkey. Importing these drugs can carry severe consequences, including imprisonment. Please consult your healthcare provider prior to departure to ensure that any drugs you may want to bring with you are legal in Turkey.
  • If you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging into your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Greece’s warm climate ensures a constant supply of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Salads served with aromatic olive oil, feta cheese, and oregano are plentiful, as are dishes centered on grilled fish, meat, squid, and octopus. One of our favorite plates? Spanakopita—a savory mix of spinach, cheese, and seasonings, wrapped in phyllo dough and baked to crisp perfection.
  • In Turkey, breakfast typically consists of sourdough bread with sheep’s cheese and olives, as well as jam or honey. A midday meal or dinner often starts with a meze: a plate of varied appetizers like cheesy pastry rolls, pickled vegetables, and potato fritters. On the coast, fish is an excellent choice, especially tuna, turbot, and sardines. Carnivores should try the lamb kebab: Prepared in a variety of ways and served with different sauces and dressings, it’s sure to satisfy. And while tea is the national drink, be sure to try Turkish coffee. This strong brew is prepared with ultra-fine coffee grounds and spices like cardamom, resulting in a rich, aromatic drink. (Sip slowly, though: It’s served unfiltered!)
  • Greece and Turkey operate on the European standard of 220–240 volts and use Type C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or any device without one built in.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it’s usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Greece and Turkey are two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and seven hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET). Please note that Turkey does not observe daylight saving time.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 7pm on tour.
  • You’ll use the euro in Greece and the Turkish lira in Turkey.
  • Better exchange rates are usually available overseas, but it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. You can also use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10–$12USD per person, per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of $3USD per person, per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you’re on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for it to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See the last page of your tour itinerary for more information.

Beyond the Blue

Greece and Turkey are both synonymous with diverse landscapes, spectacular beauty, sacred archaeological sites, famous myths, and ancient civilisations. Cruise through the Greek Islands, experience whitewashed villages, visit the sacred Temples of Olympia, and stroll through Istanbul’s treasure-filled bazaars. Serving up ruins, resorts, and rich history, from the world-famous Acropolis in Athens to the intriguing cultural relics in Ephesus, a Globus Mediterranean holiday through Greece and Turkey is sure to deliver.

Meteora, Greece

Greece & Turkey Highlights

Perched atop soaring huge cliffs are the monasteries of Meteora, of which six are still active. Visit the beautiful monasteries of Varlaam and St. Stephen's to marvel at this serenely mystical landscape with breathtaking views from above.

Cross the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean to the iconic island of Santorini. Meander the charming streets or laze on one of the island’s idyllic beaches. After a dinner of traditional specialties head to one of the island’s viewpoints to catch the breathtaking beauty of an amber Santorini sunset.

Ephesus

Turkey’s ancient Ephesus was once the second biggest city of the Roman Empire and is supposedly where the Virgin Mary spent the last years of her life. Today it is one of the largest Roman archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean, with its excavated remains reflecting centuries of history.

Turkey FAQ's

Some of the things you might picture when you think of Turkey are the captivating and labyrinthine bazaars and perhaps also the steamy Turkish baths (called hamams ), meant to cleanse your body and calm your mind. You`ll get to find out a lot more about what Turkey is known for when you visit its bustling cities , each with its own distinct charm. You can see the charm in the varied architecture seen across the country, varying from Byzantine to Ancient Greek to Ottoman to Turkish contemporary designs. Many of the buildings from the past have been converted into boutique hotels , and in the past decade or so it`s become yet another cool thing Turkey is known for. Some of these hotels offer chances for travelers to sample Turkish cuisine ; even if they don`t, you should try all the Turkish food you can, whether it`s a farm-to-table restaurant or a street vendor selling kebaps . As mentioned previously, Turkey`s history stretches for thousands of years and its land has seen many conquests. You can learn about Turkey`s history at the hundreds of museums scattered across the country, ranging from open-air museums to stately exhibition halls. Ruins from the time of the Greeks and Romans , such as Pergamum and Ephesus , are popular tourist draws. Finally, any mention of Turkey would be incomplete without talking about the beautiful landscapes , with Cappadocia , Mount Ararat , and the Turquoise Coast just offering a glimpse into the varying geographical beauty that Turkey offers. With these varying landscapes, there are lots of fun outdoor activities to take part in, ranging from windsurfing and water skiing at the country`s numerous and glittering beaches to walking and hiking and hot-air balloon rides in Cappadocia.

You should definitely take some time to visit at least a few of the most popular vacation destinations in Turkey. Istanbul , the city that sits astride two continents, is a must-see for anyone coming to Turkey. Take some time to visit cities and towns in the west of the country as well, with history dating before the Ancient Greeks and where the natural beauty of the land is something to be seen to be believed. Start at Lake Sapanca and Bursa near Istanbul and head down the west coast, stopping at Canakkale and Izmir along the way, and taking a visit inland to Pamukkale for good measure. Prioritize some time to enjoy the sands and waters of the Turquoise Coast and the Gulf of Antalya , which includes such cities as Kusadasi , Bodrum , Marmaris , Fethiye , and Antalya . Dalaman , located a few miles north of the Turquoise Coast, is a city you should see in this area as well. Cappadocia , with its famous hot-air balloons and landscapes you may have only seen in picture books, is another top draw for travelers coming to Turkey. Whether you are riding horses in Kayseri or watching whirling dervishes in Konya , Cappadocia offers so many fun experiences for visitors. While you are in the interior, you should definitely spend some time in Ankara , the Turkish Republic`s sprawling capital city. East of Ankara, the Black Sea Coast , where Samsun and Trabzon are the major cities, is a popular summer vacation destination. In the winter, people head east to the ski resorts near Lake Van , and some even attempt to climb some of Turkey`s highest peaks, like Mount Suphan and the two Mount Ararat s.

Turkey is a country that can be enjoyed year-round, but many people tend to visit in the high season . For Istanbul and Cappadocia , the high season begins in the month of April , and for the rest of the country it starts by the beginning of June . Between the months of April and June, the country warms up, dries out and enjoys lots of sunshine after a four-to-five-month rainy season. Tulips will bloom in April in Istanbul, and hot air balloons take to the skies in Cappadocia around the same time. By the time summer rolls around, most of the country sees larger crowds at museums, historic sites and other points of interest, while temperatures in some parts of the country, like Istanbul and Cappadocia, might become too hot for some travelers, slowing tourism down a tad in those areas. The shoulder season , in September and October , bridges the high and low seasons for nearly the entire country in one fell swoop. Wintertime brings cold weather to most of the country, save for the Turquoise Coast, and ski season begins by December in Bursa, Ankara, and in the east of the country, running through March . For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Turkey .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Because Turkey is such a big country, we recommend people travel by air or train. Many Turkish packages we offer are escorted, meaning you will be with a tour guide the entire length of the trip, but most packages specify air as the means to get from point A to point B (and C and so on). By Air: Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier, and a number of other airlines fly across Turkey, usually via Istanbul Airport, where most people arrive in Turkey from the U.S. or Europe via air. There are international airports in Izmir, Milas-Bodrum, Dalaman, Isparta, Zafer, Ankara, Trabzon, Adana, Gaziantep, and Erzurum. By Train: Turkish State Railways runs train operations in Turkey. International rail lines link Turkey with Bulgaria, Greece, Armenia, Iran, and Syria. Turkey is currently undergoing the process of electrifying its entire rail system: electrified rail lines currently run in and around Izmir, from east of Adana to the interior of the country, and from the Turkish/Bulgarian border near Edirne to Ankara. There is also a high-speed rail line that connects suburban Istanbul with Ankara and Konya.

The currency of Turkey is the Turkish lira (₺). Banknotes come in denominations of ₺5, ₺10, ₺20, ₺50, ₺100, and ₺200, while coins, called the kurus (kr), come in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 kurus pieces. There is also a ₺1 coin. U.S. dollars are not accepted, although local prices for large ticket items (hotels, tours, carpets) are still commonly quoted in foreign currency, usually the Euro. (You will most likely be asked to pay in Turkish lira, but if you need Euros, a currency exchange desk will be able to help.) Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for lira upon arrival. Currency exchange desks and ATMs can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the country. Be aware that the ATMs are often fickle or empty, so always carry around alternatives in the form of cash or traveler`s checks (which you will most likely have to exchange at the post office) for emergencies. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Turkey .

English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. German is widely understood, as many Turks have family members who live in Germany, and they may have spent time in Germany as well. English is understood with about as much commonality as German, with French, Russian, Spanish, and Italian increasingly so. We suggest you get a good guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello (merhaba) , goodbye (hosca kalin) , please (buyurun) , thank you (ederim) , excuse me (affedersiniz) and numbers 1-10. It`s considered basic courtesy to attempt to communicate a few words in the native language, even if it is `Do you speak English?` (Ingilizce biliyor musun?)

"There is nowhere quite like Greece, there is something here for everyone; you can walk in the footsteps of the Ancient Greeks, dance the Zorba while indulging in a Greek feast or get lost in a maze of the whitewashed houses of Mykonos as the sun sets"

Evana, Travel Director

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

Kolokythokeftedes

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

Footsteps of Paul: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Journey of Paul?

The Journey of Paul refers to the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul during the early days of Christianity. In fact, Paul took four missionary journeys over several years that played an important role in early Christian history. Paul traveled more than 10,000 miles during his journeys to spread the gospel of Christ. Our Journeys of Paul tour and cruise allows you to retrace the steps of Paul during his journey through Turkey and Greece. The tour begins in Istanbul, taking you west to the Sea of Marmara and the church of Pergamum. Like our tours in Jordan , there will be a dress code at times during your Journey of Paul tour. Certain regions and religious sites have specific dress codes and it is important to dress modestly while in Turkey. Following a modest dress code is an important part of respecting local standards and beliefs.

What countries will I visit during the Journey of Paul cruise?

During our Footsteps of Paul cruise, you’ll get to visit several places in Turkey and Greece that Paul visited during his journeys. Paul’s missionary journey cruise includes port stops in Patmos, Crete and Santorini. The tour begins in Turkey where you’ll spend two nights at your hotel in Istanbul. From Istanbul, we’ll travel west to Troas, where Paul spent time during his second missionary journey. Other stops in Turkey include the church of Pergamum, Thyatira and Izmir. You’ll even get to stay in Izmir for an evening. The next portion of the tour is where you get to experience ancient cities in Turkey that can be found in the book of Revelation, also known as the Churches of Revelation. These cities include Sardis, Philadelphia, Pamukkale, Hierapolis, Laodicea and Collossae. Next, our journey to Greece involves three beautiful islands that provide stunning scenery during your cruise. While in Greece, you’ll visit the Isle of Patmos, Crete and Santorini. Crete and the Isle of Patmos are a little more rugged, so you’ll love them if you enjoyed our Ireland Christian tours . Santorini, however, is a popular vacation destination with lots of stuff to see and do and many opportunities to take the perfect picture. These islands aren’t the only places you’ll visit in Greece. Continuing our effort to retrace Paul’s journeys, we’ll visit some of the most important historical cities in Greece. We’ll disembark from the Greek islands on day 11, taking you to ancient Corinth and Cenchreae. Corinth is one of the most important cities on our tour because it inspired many of the letters that Paul wrote. You’ll also get a chance to visit Athens and see where Paul stood while preaching to the Gentile nation. While our Journey of Paul tour is enlightening and educational, you also get a chance to relax and enjoy your vacation. Like our Costa Rica tours , our cruises are comfortable and luxurious.

Are there other tours that trace the Journey of Paul?

Pilgrim Tours offers several tour packages for people who want to see and experience the Biblical sites found in the New Testament. In addition to Paul’s missionary journey cruise, we offer several tours that trace the Journeys of Paul. Our Footsteps of Paul tours take between 8 and 11 days, allowing you to experience early Christian history in a shorter time. You can also choose a Journey of Paul tour that includes other destinations like Italy. If you want to see and experience as much as possible while you’re in Europe, booking a comprehensive tour might be the best solution. If you want to experience Christian history in other parts of the world, we offer several Christian tours throughout the world. Our fellowship tours in the United States highlight the history of Christianity in the United States, starting with the introduction of Christianity by the Europeans. We also offer fellowship tours in Germany and other parts of Europe.

What is the best time of year to do the Journeys of Paul tour?

We have several dates available for our Steps of Paul cruise, so you can choose a date that fits your schedule. Whether you’re booking one of our tours of Scotland or a cruise, you should consider the weather, tourism and travel costs. While many people prefer visiting Greece and Turkey during the summer, that’s also the busiest time of year. Visiting during the spring or fall gives you the best combination of pleasant weather and smaller crowds. If weather is your biggest concern, we offer several summer cruise dates. If you have any questions about tour dates, itineraries or when to book your Journeys of Paul cruise, you can contact us to learn more before booking a cruise.

Day 1: Departure from US

tours greece and turkey

Today we embark on our Journey to the lands of ancient treasures and Christian history with an overnight flight to Turkey. Prepare yourself for a life-changing experience. Get some rest on the flight…Tomorrow you will be walking where the apostles walked!

Day 2: Arrival Istanbul

We transfer to our hotel in Istanbul, Turkey for the next two evenings.

Day 3: Bustling Istanbul, Archaeological Museum

tours greece and turkey

The tour today will be an unusual combination of Greek Orthodox, Roman, Ottoman and modern day Islam including entrance into the famed Blue Mosque and St. Sophia Church. After lunch we visit the fascinating Topkapi Palace housing the many priceless treasures and colorful stories of Ottoman Sultans. This afternoon our guide will walk us through the wonderful exhibits at the Archaeological Museum. Treasures include the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great, mosaic remnants depicting the times of Nebuchadnezzar, tablets of the Treaty of Kadesh known to be between Ramses II and the Hittites during the 13th century BC and many other wonderful items. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Sea of Marmara, Ancient Troy

Departing Istanbul, we travel west across "Trace," the European portion of Turkey. The summer homes along the Sea of Marmara will provide the scenery as we travel. Our bus boards a large ferry to cross the Dardanelles Strait giving us views of the bunkers on the hillside and the ocean going vessels. During our journey, we hear the commentary of the British major losses and World War I defeat in the Dardanelles Strait. Disembarking in Canakkale, we travel a short distance south to the area known as Troas, where Paul had a vision during his second missionary journey and was called to Macedonia (Acts 16:8-13). Paul later spent a week in Troas preaching here and Eutychus was resurrected (Acts 20:6-12). We will visit ancient Troy, which was excavated in 1873 by Heinrich Schliemann. Don't forget to have your picture taken from the top of the Trojan Horse. We travel to our nearby lodging for the evening.

Day 5: Pergamum, Thyatira & Izmir

tours greece and turkey

Our first visit of the day is Pergamum. The church of Pergamum was praised for its forbearance; (Rev. 2:12-17) it was here that the first Christians were executed by Rome. We'll visit the fabled Acropolis, pass through the Royal Gates, view the foundations of the Altar of Zeus and visit the ruins of the library (which once held 200,000 volumes). Next we travel east to Thyatira viewing the ancient roadway and period columns. Thyatira was once a busy trading center and famous as a "seller of purple," the most favored of the Seven Churches. We continue south to Izmir, which is the third largest city in Turkey and a long time center for Jews and Christians. In Paul's day, Izmir was known as Smyrna and was another of the Seven Churches (Rev. 2:8-11). Our lodging this evening will be in Izmir.

Day 6: Sardis, Philadelphia, Pamukkale

tours greece and turkey

Departing our Hotel in Izmir, we'll see Polycarp's Church and visit the ancient roman agora. Then, we travel to Sardis, which was berated by John for its facade of strength when, in reality, it was weak (Rev. 3:1-6). Here coins were minted and the dyeing of wool originated. We'll visit the gymnasium and synagogue. Our next stop is nearby Philadelphia from where we are challenged to “hold fast” and look forward to the coming of the "new Jerusalem" (Rev. 3:7-13) in the Book of Revelation. Not much is left of the city except for the ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica in the modern city of Alasehir. Our lodging this evening will be in a lovely spa hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 7: Hierapolis, Laodicea & Colossae

Hierapolis, meaning "Sacred City," was an ancient center for pagan cults until it was transformed into a Christian center in the first century. According to tradition, the Apostle Philip lived and was martyred in Hierapolis. It was likely the hot springs of Hierapolis (in contrast to the cold mountain springs near Colossae) that combined to bring application to the "lukewarm" Laodiceans (Rev 3:14-22). This connection between the cities lies behind Paul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea in his epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13). Laodicea contains many acres of ruins to visit including a stadium and remnants of a sophisticated water system. Nearby Colossae is well-known throughout Christian circles as the receiver of Paul's letter to the Colossians. Today, the town has fallen into obscurity and nothing remains. We spend the remainder of the day traveling through the Turkish countryside arriving in the port city of Kusadasi where we spend two nights. The day will not be complete without a visit to a local Turkish Rug cooperative.

Day 8: Ephesus

tours greece and turkey

We travel to the nearby town of Selcuk for a visit of ancient Ephesus. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city. We view the Library, Agora, theatre, colorful mosaics in the aristocratic Terrace Houses, and a panoramic outlook of the surrounding ancient port area (including a wealth of church history and cultural insight). Then we continue with a visit to the Basilica Church of St. John, which houses an immersion baptismal and is believed to be resting place of John. From here we have an excellent overview of the Ephesus harbor, the Mosque of Jesus, and see the site of the Temple of Artemis, which is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Day 9: Isle of Patmos

This morning, we embark our cruise ship and sail for a visit to the beautiful Isle of Patmos, which is under statutory protection as a historic monument. Here we have a tour to see the fortified monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received the Revelation. Back on the ship, enjoy dinner before settling in to your cabin for the night.

Day 10: Crete, Santorini

tours greece and turkey

Crete is the largest and the most rugged of the Greek islands. Take a tour to Heraklion and the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 and partially reconstructed, the elaborate Palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan culture. This afternoon visit the island of Santorini which is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Greek Islands. You may choose to take an optional panoramic bus tour viewing some of the most spectacular scenery of the Aegean. Travel through countless villages and settlements with delicate architecture and beauties eventually arriving in Oia. During your time in Oia, visit the many narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques. Upon returning to the ship, we view the lace-like caldera, the little islands of Thirasia, Palea, & Nea Kameni. We arrive at the ship for dinner and evening entertainment.

Day 11: Disembark Cruise – Ancient Corinth & Cenchreae

tours greece and turkey

We disembark the cruise this morning and travel west with a rest stop and photos at the Corinth Canal. Next, we visit ancient Corinth, the city that inspired many of Paul's most familiar letters and is a highlight for the New Testament scholar. See the Archaeological Museum, the Market Place, the Bema, and the Temples. To enjoy a devotional in the midst of the ruins of the church of Corinth and see the pillars, steps, and public worship place where Paul preached will enhance your understanding and love for the Bible. The ruins of this important cultural center are fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul walked. The engineering skill and intellect of these people are evident in the water systems that still flow from ancient to modern day. Our guide will be sure to show you the room dedicated to the medical care of that period. We travel on to the top of the nearby Acropolis where our guide will speak on the worship practices and point out the bird’s eye view of what was a bustling city of around 800,000 during Paul’s stay. Another important stop is a visit to Diolkos where we view the paved trackway which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth and served as a life line for Corinth. This shortcut allowed ancient vessels to avoid the long and dangerous circumnavigation of the Peloponnese peninsula. Before returning to Athens, we will visit Cenchreae, the ancient port region of Corinth. Acts 18:18 states the Apostle Paul stopped at Cenchreae during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfill a vow.

Day 12: Athens

tours greece and turkey

Following breakfast this morning we tour Athens, the foundation of democracy. We visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and Erectheum before viewing Athens atop Mars Hill where Paul stood and preached the truth to the Gentile nation. From atop Mars Hill we view the Agora below, the ancient marketplace and center of Athenian public life. Additional sites viewed during our panoramic bus tour are, the House of Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Olympic Stadium, and Presidential Palace. An option later this afternoon is a visit to the famous Plaka with a multitude of shops and cafes.

Day 13: Meteora Monastery

Please prepare for a dress code today. In Meteora, women are required to wear skirts below the knee and men, pants. From Athens, our tour travels northward past Thermopylae where we learn of the famous Spartan battle of 300. We continue through the mountains to Meteora. Here we see the world famous Byzantine monasteries that are perched precariously on summits of gray rock pinnacles of varied and beautiful shapes. Their history goes back to the 14th century when the monks sought refuge in the cliffside caves then fled higher to build the original wooden shelters, later transformed into monasteries. Our lodging this evening will be in Meteora.

Day 14: Vergina, Berea, Thessalonica

tours greece and turkey

Traveling northward into Macedonia we visit King Phillip's (Alexander's father) tomb in Vergina, one of the most outstanding finds in all of Greece. A stop will be made in Berea to view the ancient synagogue where Paul spoke and the Bema surrounded by mosaics of Paul and the plaque of scripture regarding the "more noble" church. The New Testament books of I & II Thessalonians will come alive to us today as we arrive in the delightful harbor city of Thessalonica. En route to the hotel we will view the old city ramparts; the newly excavated Forum, St. George Church, an ancient Roman monument which was transformed into a church and the Galerius Arch which rises over the famous Via Egnatia. We spend two nights here.

Day 15: Thessalonica/Philippi/Kavala

tours greece and turkey

We begin the day by following the massive battlement Byzantine wall to the citadel for a panoramic view of the city. Next, we will visit Philippi and Kavala. Kavala is Greece's prettiest mainland port with a most elegant harbor. Paul landed here with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. Luke, the Evangelist, also came here from Troas. This ancient city of Neapolis was later renamed Christoupolis because it was the first European city to accept Christianity. Imagine walking on the same sod as these men of the Bible! We will see the Roman Aqueduct and the ruins of the Acropolis in this beautifully located city, known since the 5th century as Kavala. Continue on to Philippi where Paul preached his first evangelical sermon and baptized the first Christians on European soil. We will view the baptismal site where Lydia surrendered her life to Christ and visit a crypt dating from the Roman period that is thought to have served as a prison for Paul. See the famous Acropolis, the Market Place, Basilica, and the Theatre. We return to Thessalonica and visit St. Demetrius Basilica, dedicated to a distinguished member of the Roman army and a martyred Christian convert, before returning to the hotel for our final night.

Day 16: Homeward Bound

We transfer to the Thessalonica airport for our flight home.

More information about Turkey

A continent-spanning country, divided between Europe and Asia , Turkey is known for its diverse and vibrant culture, ancient civilizations and dizzying whirling dervishes. The former capital and largest city of Istanbul sits on the winding Bosphorus Strait and is home to dozen of cultural and architectural treasures, from the Hagia Sophia to the Blue Mosque and bustling Grand Bazaar .

On the other hand, the modern capital of Ankara is home to the iconic colonnaded mausoleum of Ataturk , who founded the Turkish Republic. Delicious cuisine, epic history, and vast mountainous landscapes make a Turkey holiday package the ultimate adventure experience, whilst the gorgeous Mediterranean coastlines along the south of the country offer serene beach resorts and plenty of fun in the sun. Bordered by Greece, Georgia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria , a package holiday to Turkey opens up a world of culture, thanks to its unique position, once an important stop on the historic Silk Road . A Turkey tour package is the best way to get to grips with the complexity of the country, it’s wide array of natural wonders and its diverse cities and communities.

History of Turkey

Great civilizations, such as the Assyrians, Greeks, Armenians,  and Urartians , among others, have left their mark on the region across the centuries, with ancient sites, such as Gobekli Tepe, which predates Stonehenge, offering insight into years gone by to visitors on a trip to Turkey.

The country’s foundations can be traced back to the victory of the Seljuk Turks over the mighty Byzantines in the 11th-century , who continued their dominance until the 13th-century Mongol Invasion when the Sultanate was disintegrated into small principalities. The Ottoman dynasty began to unite these principalities in the later 13th-century and captured and conquered the iconic Byzantine capital of Constantinople in 1453. Under Suleiman the Magnificent the vast Ottoman Empire encompassed a huge part of the world, stretching from Europe to Africa and Asia.

20th-century Turkish history has been characterized by the Turkish war of independence, led by the national hero, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , which resulted in the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic in 1923. Visitors on Turkey tours can visit his monumental tomb in the capital of Ankara. Ataturk became the first president of the republic and brought about major changes to Turkish society, encouraging the westernization of the national culture.

Nature in Turkey

Turkey is home to a vast and diverse landscape, split into seven geographical areas, each with its own unique characteristics. Home to biodiverse wildlife, with as many as 80,000 species, Turkey’s 40 national parks and countless nature reserves provide refuge for an array of spectacular natural treasures and rare wildlife, such as the elusive Anatolian leopard.

Out of the dozens of bucket-list-worthy natural attractions to discover on Turkey holiday packages, the amazing landscape of Cappadocia stands out. A true natural wonder, Cappadocia is a historic region of Anatolia , home to otherworldly rock formations that have been transformed into a living city.

Here, ‘fairy chimneys’ or ‘hoodoos’ dot the landscape, and some are even used as homes, churches, and hotels. Watching the sunrise or taking a dawn balloon ride over the fairytale landscape of Cappadocia is an unforgettable experience. The glorious hot springs of Pamukkale offer travelers another inspiring natural refuge of glistening white and blue terraced pools. Nicknamed the ‘ Cotton Castle’ , it’s the perfect place for a relaxing soak. Turkey’s largest lake, Lake Van is located in the southeast of the country, in the shadow of volcanic Mount Numrut and home to four idyllic islands. A final unmissable natural wonder is legendary Mount Ararat , thought to be the mountain where Noah’s Ark landed after the great flood and the tallest point in the country. It’s eternally snow-capped peak is sure to stir your soul and ignite your imagination.

Culture in Turkey

An eclectic blend of cultures, including Turkic, Anatolian and Ottoman traditions, as well as western influences, make up the rich tapestry of Turkey’s culture . Extremes of both eastern and western traditions are represented within the country. Turkey is a secular state and enjoys complete freedom of religion, although the majority of the population follow Islam , seen in the amazing mosques and elaborate religious traditions you’ll encounter on a tour of Turkey.

One of the country’s most famous cultural ceremonies is the dance of the whirling dervishes , a distinct and captivating Islamic tradition. Turkish cuisine is reason enough to choose a holiday to Turkey , and traditional Turkish music is a soul-stirring soundtrack to everyday life in the cities, with impromptu performances heard throughout the streets and markets. Like many nations, culture differs between rural and urban spheres. Traditional life continues in the farms and villages of the countryside, whilst the countries urban centers are a melting-pot of cosmopolitan cultures and influences, perfectly balancing the new and the old.

Choose a tour of Turkey to encounter a fusion of east and west and a history that stretches back centuries and is etched on the mythical landscapes. Admire the warmth of the locals and the idyllic coastal resorts, but don’t forget to take the time to absorb the aromas of the bustling food markets and the incomparable atmosphere of a nation that straddles two continents and fuses the best of both world.

Summer of Dupes: Alternatives in the Aegean

Between Turkey and Greece, there are plenty of spectacular spots for a seaside vacation. So why not go beyond the usual suspects? Here are five lesser-known choices.

  • June 7, 2024

In April, Princess Cruises told passengers that it was canceling a scheduled stop in Santorini, Greece, citing congestion. Four cruise ships were already anticipated to arrive on the same day in June, and were it to join, the ships would have brought some 17,000 visitors to an island of 15,500 residents.

In the Aegean Sea, more than 1,000 islands fill the waters between Greece and Turkey, and the coastlines are lined with spectacular bays. Both countries set tourism records last year, a boon for two fragile economies, but one that follows and in turn fuels frenzied development that threatens local livelihoods, cultural heritage and ecological balance, particularly on the Greek islands.

With plenty of whitewashed islands and historic coastal towns offering the same charms as their neighbors, it’s time to look beyond Mykonos and Marmaris to lesser-known spots that might benefit from more visitors. Whether you’re in search of a hiking adventure, a cultural excursion or seclusion in rugged beauty, here are five destinations that offer distinctly Aegean experiences, without the crowds.

When Michelin expanded its Turkey guidebook last year, the quiet district of Urla, near the port city of Izmir, stole the spotlight. On a windy peninsula with clay-heavy soil, the hilly region has a rich winemaking tradition that dates back 6,000 years. A near-total government monopoly on winemaking stymied production for decades, but recently boutique makers and chef-driven restaurants have carved a path for themselves and put Urla on the gastronomic map.

Newer wine producers like Hus focus almost exclusively on indigenous grapes, joining longtime innovators along the Urla Vineyard Route , which winds through rolling fields, olive groves and nine wineries, two of which have beautiful guest rooms, including 2 Rooms hotel at Şarapçilik (from $230). Each producer is no more than a 20-minute drive from the next.

A plate of food has been photographed from above. On it, artichokes that have been sliced in half sit atop an intensely green juice, with foam, leaves and dollops of orange scattered on top.

“It’s as if everything here is passed down from word of mouth, from generation to generation, from season to season,” said Seray Kumbasar, the sommelier and co-owner of Vino Locale , a fine-casual restaurant among vineyards.

The local grape Bornova Misketi, a semisweet ancestor of muscat, features in many of Vino Locale’s Italian-leaning dishes. Ms. Kumbasar and her husband, Ozan, who is the chef, take a hyperlocal approach, harvesting the restaurant’s produce alongside the farmers who supply it. Most menu items are bright takes on simple ingredients: The heart of a local artichoke is boiled in a fragrant broth of herbs and citrus, then doused with olive oil and paired with fava bean purée and kumquat.

On the way to the coast from wine country, the restaurant OD Urla has a similarly light-handed style. Wood-fired dishes, like a gently cooked octopus or squid drizzled with fermented pomegranate syrup, combine seafood from the peninsula’s waters with produce from an on-site farm.

In the charming town of Urla itself, stone alleyways connect multi-hyphenate spaces like İstifçi , where a combined design and wine store leads to a restaurant and hotel; laid-back hangouts like Filos Coffee and Wine , which serves a selection of the area’s wines by the glass; and mom-and-pop shops that do one thing very well, such as Girit Pastanesi with its bademli kazandibi, an almond-studded caramelized milk pudding.

The seaside town of Ayvalik, 250 miles southwest of Istanbul, was once a hub of Ottoman-era olive oil production. Many of the industry’s stone factories are now populated with workshops focused on traditional Turkish crafts. Despite growing tourism, Ayvalik retains “a raw texture,” said Özlem Erol, the founder of the design store Moyy Atölye , as well as “a permanent community that lives and produces here.”

At her boutique, Ms. Erol works with women artisans to design clothing made from feretiko, an airy, handwoven fabric of hemp and cotton, as well as other crafts, like baskets made from the bark of hazelnut trees and braided wooden stools. At Bovindo , one of many shops selling porcelain works created on site, a ceramist creates elaborately etched plates based on her mother’s old dishware. At Tia Vine Cafe & Bar , the husband-and-wife co-owners, Hasan and Neşe Erdem, serve local wines alongside Circassian family recipes, such as haluj dumplings, pockets filled with puréed potato and covered in garlic yogurt.

Most of the action is centered in the neighborhood of Macaron, where every other corner seems to have either a small-batch olive oil store, antiques market or boutique hotel. The most contemporary, Ivy Ayvalik, opened last year in a traditional stone home (from $70). Four compact but comfy rooms sit above a neon-lit cafe and wine bar that stays lively late into the evenings.

From town, it’s a three-mile drive to the island of Cunda and its Ayvalik Islands Nature Park , where you can explore the rocky coves and a hiking path through the hills that opens onto sweeping views, before heading into Cunda’s main town for plates of sardine tartines at Ayna and herbal drinks at Cactus , one of many cocktail bars that circle the area’s central square.

With resort-filled Bodrum to its north, the nightlife capital of Marmaris to its east, and the ever-popular Greek island of Rhodes to its south, it’s a surprise that Datça has stayed relatively unknown. That is, until you look at a map: the long, narrow peninsula is connected to the mainland by a thin isthmus (plus a ferry from Bodrum) that’s somehow been enough to deter most visitors.

Güven Çetinkaya is the chef and co-owner of the Ultava Houses hotel, which consists of four traditional village homes that have been updated with amenities like private rooftop pool terraces (from $170). He said that unlike in more touristed areas, most of Datça’s residents have lived there for a long time. The region’s strict building codes have kept large developments away.

Along with a waterfront of fish restaurants, there’s Eski Datça, or the old town, where bougainvillea spills over stone buildings. There are just enough small restaurants and cafes to start and end your days here, but most visitors spend the hours in between exploring the pebbled beaches tucked into büks, or “bends,” that dot the peninsula’s 200 miles of coastline (Aquarium Cove is a standout).

The drive along the peninsula’s interior — marked by Valonia oaks, deep river gorges and stonewalled almond orchards — is just as spectacular. Along the way are detours to fishing villages turned into modest beach towns, home-style restaurants set in lush gardens, and at the peninsula’s western tip, the ancient site of Knidos and its Hellenic amphitheater.

Almost a third of this island in the western Cyclades can only be reached by footpaths, which act as small windows into its storied history. Some routes date back to the Neolithic period; others were forged by the miners of gold and silver who made Sifnos one of the richest stops in ancient Greece. “Today, they are still used by the locals to reach their terraced fields and small chapels, as well as by hikers,” said Fivos Tsaravopoulos, co-founder of Paths of Greece , a national hiking cooperative.

For close to a decade, the group has carefully restored some 60 miles of the island’s network and organized several self-guided themed hikes . One is a remote nine-mile path that circles Sifnos’s highest point, Mount Profitis Ilias, and passes chapels, terraces and a nature preserve known for bird-watching. “It’s the only way to experience what it’s like to live on this island, one of the most pristine in the Cyclades,” said Mr. Tsaravopoulos, who hopes the paths encourage more travelers to come during the shoulder seasons, when there’s good hiking weather.

In between hikes you can enjoy long meals of Sifnian delicacies, many slow-cooked in olive-wood-fired ovens. Since Nicholas Tselementes, considered the most important chef in Greece’s history, established himself here in the early 1900s, the island has kept up its culinary reputation.

Sifnos staples like revithada, a baked chickpea stew, and mastelo, roasted lamb, can be found at every taverna, while newcomer eateries like Cantina lean more creative — smoked-ox-cheek-croquettes topped with eggplant béchamel, for example. For a stay that rivals those in Mykonos, the 18-room Nos Hotel & Villas (from $825), the island’s latest addition, is all stone and marble surfaces, cinematic lighting and pools perched on the hillside.

Folegandros

About an hour west of Santorini by ferry, Folegandros is a quieter option for a classic Greek-island getaway. The sparsely developed island has no airport, less-accessible beaches and few visitor attractions — and that’s the draw. Its latest hotel, billed as its first luxury property, capitalizes on this feeling of seclusion: Gundari is in an 80-acre nature reserve known for its population of Eleanora’s falcons (from $640).

Unlike other luxury developments in the Cyclades, which often stoked ire among locals, Gundari hopes to set a different tone through its small-footprint commitments. The hotel has its own wastewater treatment system, and all of its stonework was made with rocks excavated on-site. An on-site farm, which employs traditional agricultural practitioners, will soon launch after-school programs.

Each of the 27 rooms comes with a private infinity pool, and its restaurant, run by Lefteris Lazarou — the chef behind Athens’s Michelin-starred Varoulko — will serve a rotating menu of unfussy seafood dishes, such as octopus carpaccio with fava bean cream and black garlic. From its cliffside setting, you can head down to white sand or pebbled beaches via e-bike.

The main port town of Karavostasis is little more than a fishing village. The second largest village, Ano Meria, has ancient hilltop ruins, traditional farmhouses and the Ecomuseum , which captures what homestead life was like. Chora, the island’s de facto capital, with its quintessential whitewashed squares on a cliff’s edge, has all the charm of busy towns on nearby islands but maintains an intact local community.

I spent every summer in Greece as a kid. Here are 7 places to visit that aren't Santorini, Mykonos, or Athens.

  • My parents are both Greek, and they took me back to Greece every summer to learn about my roots.
  • Thessaloniki is a mainland city with incredible food, beautiful history, and plenty of nightlife.
  • Islands like Corfu and Rhodes will give you amazing beaches without as many tourists.

Insider Today

As a kid, I spent nearly every summer with my family in Greece.

My parents immigrated to California from Greece in the 1980s, but they made sure I grew up learning about our family's roots. We spent almost every summer of my childhood in Greece, where beach days were filled with that perfect turquoise Aegean Sea and big fresh bowls of horiatiki .

Friends now frequently ask me for advice on their Greece trips, but the only places they ever want to visit are Mykonos, Santorini, and Athens. My answer to them is always the same: You can experience so much of Greece's incredible food, culture, and beaches without setting foot in its packed tourist destinations.

So, with the help of my lovely parents , I've brought you a list of seven incredible spots in Greece that hold some of our favorite memories.

Thessaloniki is a beautiful city packed with great food and incredible history.

Most of my summers in Greece were spent in Thessaloniki, where both of my parents grew up. It's the second biggest city in the country after Athens and dates all the way back to 316 BC.

Ancient ruins can be seen in the city's downtown area, along with the majestic Byzantine churches. But the most important landmark is the White Tower , which was built in the 15th century after Thessaloniki fell to the Ottomans. The White Tower now has an exhibition on the city's history, and you can go up to the top for spectacular views from its balcony.

Thessaloniki is also packed with so many delicious tavernas and restaurants that the city landed on Time Magazine's list of "The World's Greatest Places of 2022." My mom recommends visiting the Ladadika neighborhood at the city's center for dinner, or going to Aretsou for views of the water. Try the bougasta — a Greek dessert of custard wrapped in phyllo — or koulouri, Greek sesame bread rings that were my mom's childhood favorite.

"Walk in the Thessaloniki promenade to enjoy a sunset and, if the sky is clear, a perfect view of Mount Olympus," she added.

I'll let you in on a secret: The best beaches in Greece are actually in Halkidiki.

Sure, Santorini's got those gorgeous white buildings, and Mykonos has the wild nightlife. But if you're looking for an incredible beach vacation, you might be better off on the mainland.

Even as a kid, I remember being stunned by the beaches in Halkidiki. The sand is soft and white, the water is warm, and the colors of the sea are the brightest blues you'll ever see. One summer my mom and uncle took me to a different beach every day, and she still loves to tell the story of how I gave all the Halkidiki beaches an "A++" because I loved them so much.

Halkidiki is near Thessaloniki, so it's also a great place to visit if you want to combine a city escape with a beach destination. Plus, with so many local tavernas by the sea, you're sure to have a great meal of octopus, ouzo on the rocks, and some calamari.

"If all you want for your vacation is to lie on a beach and listen to the waves, Halkidiki is your destination," my mom said.

A trip to Meteora will give you an unforgettable hike.

Meteora is another childhood trip I'll always remember. Located in central Greece, the Meteora monasteries — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are perched on huge cliffs that will take your breath away.

Orthodox Christian hermit monks first began coming to the cliffs of Meteora around the 9th century, looking for peace and isolation. In the 14th century, the first Meteora monastery was built, spearheading the beginning of the site's monastic community, according to Visit Meteora . Six of the 24 monasteries remain active today with more than 60 nuns and monks.

"It's absolutely amazing to realize that monks built these monasteries and lived there for centuries," my mom said. "The unique rock formations and nice sunsets offer many photo opportunities. It's a really special place that makes me feel close to heaven."

Delphi is a dream destination for history lovers.

tours greece and turkey

Ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the "navel of the world." The myth goes that Zeus released one eagle from the east and one from the west and the birds met in the middle at Delphi, where the famous oracle was built.

In addition to being an incredible archaeological site, Delphi also has a stunning natural backdrop. My mother said she still remembers the sweeping views of the valleys and the lovely olive trees in addition to the incredible ancient ruins.

"I loved visiting Delphi because of its history, but also because of the beautiful natural surroundings," she added.

And how could you not be wowed by the birthplace of the Olympics?

For as long as I can remember, the Olympics have been a huge point of pride in our household. My parents always loved reminding me why Greece walks first in the Parade of Nations, and why the Greek flag is always flown during the closing ceremony.

So as a kid, it was incredibly special to visit Olympia, where the Olympics first began. The games were held in Olympia every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD , and ruins from the sporting events still stand there today.

"Olympia has always had an emotional impact on me," my mom said. "To be able to walk in the same field where the Olympics started moved me very much when I visited for the first time."

"I think this would be a special place for someone who loves sports or history," she added.

Corfu is one of my family's favorite islands in Greece.

I have this distinct memory of seeing beautiful candy-colored houses along the water in Corfu. The stunning city is a great option if you want to visit a beautiful Greek island without fighting hundreds of other tourists for a picture of the sunset.

Once under Venetian rule, the Italian influence is still apparent in much of Corfu's beautiful architecture and delicious food. Along with stunning beaches, the island is known for its lush flora and fauna. My parents took my sister and me to Corfu when we were kids and said it was a great spot for family vacations.

My dad also recommends adding a trip to Ioannina on the way to Corfu to visit the stunning Perama Cave.

Rhodes is a stunning Greek island that feels straight out of the Middle Ages.

Ruled by the Knights of St. John from the 14th to 16th century, Rhodes still feels steeped in medieval history. I remember being wowed as a kid while walking past the majestic castles, under the stone arches, and through the tiny cobblestone alleys on the island's Old Town.

Rhodes also has plenty of beautiful beaches, as well as Butterfly Valley — my mom's favorite part of the island.

Ukraine war latest: Putin arrives in North Korea; Russian forces 'move closer to key supply route'

Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for a two-day visit - his first in more than two decades. Elsewhere, the UK's Ministry of Defence says Russian forces are moving closer to a key Ukrainian supply route in the eastern Donetsk region.

As we have been reporting this evening, Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for the first time in 24 years to begin a two-day visit.

The Russian president was greeted by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, with the men seen laughing and hugging as they had a conversation near Putin's plane.

A red carpet was rolled out for his arrival as well.

The US has said it is concerned about the "deepening" cooperation between Russia and the North Korea.

The Pentagon voiced concern about the growing ties between Moscow and Pyongyang as Vladimir Putin arrived in North Korea for his first visit in 24 years.

"The deepening cooperation between Russia and the DPRK is something that should be of concern, especially to anyone that's interested in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, told reporters.

DPRK is an abbreviation for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

We have just received the first photos of Vladimir Putin arriving in North Korea.

The Russian president was greeted by the country's leader Kim Jong Un as he left his plane.

The pair hugged and had a brief conversation before leaving in the same car.

We are starting to get more details about Vladimir Putin's arrival in North Korea.

As the Russian president touched down, he was greeted by the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

The two men had a brief conversation next to Putin's motorcade, before leaving Pyongyang Airport in the same car.

As we told you in our last post, Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea for his first visit in 24 years.

The Russian president's plane touched down in Pyongyang around 2.45am local time (6.45pm UK time) after a stopover in Russia's far east.

He was reportedly greeted by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

Here's a quick look at what is expected to take place during his two-day visit...

One of the first events to take place will be one-on-one discussions between the two leaders.

There will also be a gala concert, state reception, honour guards, document signings, and a statement to the media, Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Mr Putin's aide as saying.

A number of Russian officials have travelled to Pyongyang as well as part of Mr Putin's delegation, including defence minister Andrei Belousov, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and deputy prime minister Alexander Novak.

Ahead of the visit, North Korea appeared to make preparations for a possible military parade in downtown Pyongyang.

Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea, the Kremlin has confirmed.

The Russian president touched down in the country's capital, Pyongyang, where he will begin his two-day visit.

He was greeted at the airport by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, according to RIA Novosti.

A formal meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place tomorrow.

In a presidential order issued yesterday, Putin said Moscow was looking to sign a "comprehensive strategic partnership treaty" with North Korea.

The international community has raised alarm bells regarding his trip, with NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg saying the military alliance was concerned about the support Russia could provide for North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes.

Three Russian government aircraft have landed in Pyongyang in North Korea, according to flight tracking data.

It is unclear if Vladimir Putin is on board any of the planes, but their arrival comes as the Russian president is expected to visit the country.

Flight Radar 24 shows the planes travelled from Yakutsk in east Siberia, where Putin travelled to earlier today.

Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea is an "opportunity for Russia to make mischief", an expert tells Sky News.

The Russian president is due to arrive in the country this evening for a two-day visit.

During his trip, he is expected to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss an arms arrangement between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The deal could see North Korea provide Russia with badly needed munitions in exchange for economic assistance and technology transfers.

Dr John Nilsson-Wright from the Centre for Geopolitics says the trip is a "very clear attempt" by Mr Putin to emphasise that Russia is not isolated.

"This is an opportunity for Russia to make mischief internationally by undermining the international sanctions' regime," he adds.

On security, though, he warns that Russia will have to be "cautious".

"There is a danger that they could provoke a reaction from South Korea, and Russia and South Korea do have their own economic relationship," he says.

Dutch outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte will be NATO's new secretary-general, according to reports.

Dutch news outlet NOS quoted sources as saying Mr Rutte will replace Jens Stoltenberg when he steps down in October.

Mr Stoltenberg endorsed the 57-year-old, saying he was a "very strong candidate" for the job.

The US, UK, France, Slovakia, Hungary and Germany have publicly backed Mr Rutte as Mr Stoltenberg's successor.

Romania has not yet given him the green light.

NATO takes decisions by consensus, so any candidate needs the support of all 32 allies.

Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive in North Korea shortly.

The Russian president will head to Pyongyang to meet the country's leader Kim Jong Un during the two-day trip.

The visit marks the first time he has been to North Korea in 24 years.

It comes amid growing concerns about an arms arrangement between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The deal could see North Korea provide Russia with badly needed munitions in exchange for economic assistance and technology transfers that would enhance the threat posed by Kim's nuclear weapons and missile programme.
