Evpatoria - Overview

Evpatoria or Yevpatoria or Yevpatoriya is a resort city located in the western part of Crimea Republic on the Black Sea coast. The city extends for about 14 km along the shallow Kalamitskiy gulf. Local beaches are known for their clean and soft golden sand, clear sea water and gently sloping bottom of the gulf.

Since 2014, Evpatoria is controlled by Russia.

The population of Evpatoria is about 108,000 (2021).

The current status of Evpatoria and Crimea

The current status of Evpatoria is disputed between Ukraine and Russia. De facto, it is controlled by Russia as the entire Crimea.

On March 16, 2014, a referendum was held and the results showed that the majority of Crimeans voted for independence of Crimea and joining Russia. However, the legitimacy of the referendum is questionable.

It was not recognized internationally. This event is widely regarded as the annexation of Crimea by Russia. Ukraine considers Crimea as its territory temporarily occupied by Russia.

History of Evpatoria

The first recorded settlement in present city area was called Kerkinitis (Kirkinitida). It was built by Greek colonists around 500 BC. Kerkinitis with the rest of Crimea was the part of the state of King of Pontus - Mithridates VI (nickname - Evpator).

From the 7th to the 10th centuries, it was a Khazar settlement. Later, the settlement was under control of Mongols and Crimean Khanate and was named Kezlev. In 1478-1485, the town was ruled by the Ottoman Empire.

In 1783, Kezlev (with the whole Crimea) was captured by the Russian Empire. The name of the city was officially changed to Evpatoria in 1784. The city was occupied by British, French and Turkish troops during the Crimean War (1854).

At the end of the 19th century, the town became a popular resort . Dachas began to be constructed on the territory between the old town and Moynaky Lake. In 1914, a tram line was opened in the town, in 1915 - a railway line.

By 1940, there were 38 sanatoriums and rest homes in the city.

Present day Evpatoria main industries are tourism, fishing, food processing, wine making and furniture manufacturing.

Evpatoria - Features

There are no large industrial plants in the city, except milk-, bread-, wine-making and some other small plants, mainly of food and processing industries. Not far from the town, there is a center of controlling and testing space equipment.

The resort area is located in the south-west. In the east, there is an old town which has a net of small crooked streets typical for eastern towns. Moynaky Lake is located in the west and Sasyk Lake in the east.

Among natural curing factors, there is unique mud, sea and mineral water, air and sun, sand and herbs. A lot of sandy beaches are located within the city limits.

Mild climate without sharp temperature changes makes this area especially favorable for health. Evpatoria is one of the sunniest towns in European part of the CIS (former states of the USSR).

There are 258 sunny days a year as usual and can be up to 289 in especially sunny years. The sea there is very warm. In mid-summer, July-August, the water temperature reaches 23-26 degrees C above zero.

Winters are warm, as a rule, day temperatures are above zero. Snow falls every winter but it thaws in several days.

Autumn is the best season for resting in Evpatoria, at the end of so-called “velvet” season, when the number of guests decreases as well as heat but the sea is still warm.

Interesting facts about Evpatoria

In Paris there is Evpatoriyskaya Street (Rue d’Evpatoria), it was called like this to commemorate the battle happened near the city during the Crimean War.

In June 1908, a telephone line connecting Evpatoria and Simpferopol was constructed - the first one in the Russian Empire.

In Switzerland, there is a post-rock band called The Evpatoria Report. The name of the band is not accidental and as one of the musicians told, it is linked with antenna complex PT-70 located near the city. With the help of this equipment messages to civilizations outside the Earth are sent from time to time.

Attractions of Evpatoria

St. Nicholas Cathedral . The majestic St. Nicholas Cathedral towers over the surrounding buildings near the waterfront opposite the mosque Juma-Jami. The foundations of the cathedral were laid in 1893. It was built in memory of the liberation of Evpatoria from the English-French-Turkish forces. Tuchin Street, 2. Opening hours: 7:00-21:00.

Juma-Jami Mosque . Khan mosque Juma-Jami (Khan-Jami) is the largest and the most majestic mosque in the Crimea. The mosque was founded under Khan Devlet I Giray in 2010. In 1962-1985, restoration of the mosque was carried out; two minarets damaged in the early 19th century because of the earthquake were recovered.

Until 1990, the place was used as a museum of atheism. Today, the mosque is returned to believers, there are guided tours available. Revolution Street 36. Opening hours: excursions - 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, day off - Friday.

Armenian Church . Basilica of St. Nicholas was founded in the Armenian quarter of the city in 1885. The construction of the temple lasted for about 20 years. During Soviet times, the temple was used for household needs. There are plans to restore the church and to return it to the Armenian community. Internatsionalnaya Street, 44.

Yeghia-Kapai Synagogue . This synagogue was founded in 1912. Today, it is renovated and, in its territory, there is a Jewish cultural and ethnographic center with a kosher cafe-museum, you can attend master classes of potters, chasers, soap-boilers, etc. Karaimskaya Street, 47. Excursions - after 15:00.

St. Ilia Church . This Greek church, consecrated in the name of the Holy Prophet Ilia, is located on the waterfront, near the yacht club, Juma-Jami mosque, and St. Nicholas cathedral. The church, built in 1911-1918, is a monument of architecture. Buslaev Brothers Street, 1.

Karaite kenasy . This complex of amazingly beautiful houses of worship (kenasy) is the main spiritual center of the Crimean Karaites. The complex was built in the beginning of the 19th century when a large community of Karaites settled in the city after leaving the cave city of Chufut-Calais.

Today, kenasy are open to worshipers and tourists. Here you can find a museum of Karaite culture and a cafe offering Karaite cuisine. Karaimskaya Street, 68. Opening hours: 10:00-20:00 (winter - 12:00-17:00), Saturday - 12:00-20:00.

Tekie of dervishes . The abode of dervishes of Sufi Order “Mevlevi” is the only monument of the Sufi branch of Islam in the Crimea.

Nearby, you can find Shukulay-Effendi mosque with a minaret (the 17th-19th centuries), as well as a former madrasah housing a cultural and ethnographic center and museum of the Crimean Tatar culture. Karayev Street, 18. Opening hours: 10:00-18:00.

Evpatoria City Gates . It is the largest and the only survived (reconstructed) city gate. On the ground floor, you can see well-preserved original brickwork; there is a Crimean Tatar cafe-museum “Kezlev Kavesi” and a museum “Kezlev Gate” with the layout of the medieval town here. It is a good place to begin a tour of the old city. Karaev Street, 13-a. Opening hours: 9:00-20:00.

The Pyramid (ruins of Kirkinitida) . It is a small glass structure, which has become the hallmark of the present city. Transparent dome covers archaeological complex “Northwest suburbs of the ancient city Kerkinitida of the 5th - 2nd centuries BC.” Duvanovskaya Street.

The Tram . It is a guided tram route on the basis of a single-track streetcar line opened in 1914. It is the only operating streetcar line in the Crimea, not including the resort tram in the neighboring Molochnaya village.

The tram is not only a public transport, but also one of the most popular attraction for tourists. The guide talks about the sights and interesting aspects of the 2500-year history of Kirkinitida-Gezleva-Evpatoria. The route is about 20 km long. Excursion time - 1 hour 20 minutes. Frunze Street. Opening hours: 11:00-20:00.

Evpatoria Dolphinarium . The show lasts for 40-45 minutes. Dolphins sing, dance, draw, play volleyball with the audience. Kievskaya Street, 19/20. First show starts at 11:00.

Local History Museum . The museum is located in the former house of the merchant Gelelovich, built in the Moorish style in 1912.

The collection of the museum consists of archaeological and numismatic objects, antique books and works of art confiscated from wealthy residents of the city. Duvanovskaya Street, 11. Opening hours: 9:00-21:00 (winter - 9:00-17:00), days off - Wednesday, Saturday.

Chernobyl Museum . This museum is opened on the Memory of the Heroes of Chernobyl Square. It is dedicated to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In particular, there is a diorama of Chernobyl - the exact layout of the station in the first days after the explosion.

Among the other exhibits are chemical protection suits used by the liquidators of the accident, respiratory masks, copies of archival documents, personal belongings and photographs of the liquidators, etc. Lenin Avenue, 12. Opening hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday - 10:00-16:00.

The Museum of the Crimean War . The Museum of the History of the Crimean War was opened in a renovated building near the port in 2012. The exhibition features six cast iron and bronze guns of the Crimean War, the flags of all the combatants, weapons, anchors, household items, fragments of soldiers’ uniforms. Revolution Street, 61.

Stories have surfaced 18-year-old Sean Preston and 17-year-old Jayden James have seen their mom and have been communicating for months. Sources with direct knowledge beg to differ.

We're told the kids have had one convo with Britney -- on Mother's Day, but that's it. As for Britney visiting her kids when she traveled to Hawaii several times this year ... we're told that's not true -- the kids have not seen her for nearly 3 years.

Our sources say the kids have not permanently ruled out a reconciliation, but, as one source put it ... "Years of aberrant behavior and troubling conduct can't be easily erased." The source adds, "There's no evidence things have gotten better."

As for Kevin, we're told he has no objection to his kids re-establishing a relationship with their mom when the time is right, but he gets why they're not ready to do it.

Lebanon gives tour of Beirut airport to refute arms claims, amid fears of war with Israel

Lebanese government officials took more than 100 foreign diplomats and journalists on a tour Monday of the country’s only international airport in a bid to refute a British newspaper report alleging that the facility was being used to store Hezbollah weapons.

The unusual tour followed Sunday’s article in the Telegraph that quoted anonymous airport workers claiming the existence of a Hezbollah weapons cache in the airport, including artillery, ballistic and antitank missiles and explosives.

According to the un-bylined Telegraph story, one Beirut airport staffer reported seeing “unusually big boxes” arriving on a flight from Iran in November and that a high-ranking Hezbollah member oversaw customs shipments.

Coming amid escalating tensions between the paramilitary group and Israel, the report set off a frenzy of denials from Lebanese officials and raised fears it would be used by Israel to justify a strike on the airport.

It comes at a delicate time for the country: Since October, when Hezbollah launched a “support front” aimed at reducing pressure on Hamas, the Iran-backed group and Israel have traded daily strikes across the Lebanese-Israeli border.

The escalating war between Hezbollah and Israel — coupled with scorching heat — has sparked fires that are destroying forests and farmland.

So far, at least 481people have been killed in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah operatives but also 94 civilians, according to tallies by monitoring groups and news outlets. In Israel, 17 soldiers have been killed, Israeli authorities say.

Though hostilities between the two sides have been mostly around the border, fighting escalated in recent weeks , with many fearing a wider assault is only one miscalculation away.

The caretaker Lebanese Transportation Minister Ali Hamieh, a Hezbollah ally, dismissed the Telegraph’s report as “ridiculous,” saying that the airport’s cargo operations adhered to international standards. He said that consultations had already begun with other parts of the Lebanese government to launch legal proceedings against the Telegraph.

Attending the tour were representatives of diplomatic missions from the European Union, Germany, Spain, Egypt, China, India and Pakistan, among others.

As part of the tour, diplomats and journalists visited two cargo areas in the airport that Hamieh said accounted for all traffic there — including the Iranian shipments mentioned in the Telegraph’s report.

“With this article, we’ve gone from [Israeli] airspace violations to a psychological war through written articles,” he said during a news conference after the tour. He referred to the Israeli military’s frequent flying of its warplanes into Lebanese airspace.

“And now we’ve shown the falsehood of those articles,” he told the group. “They are silly articles.”

Ihab Hamada, a member of Hezbollah’s political bloc in the Lebanese parliament, told the state-run National News Agency that the group did not need the airport for its weapons.

The Israeli foreign ministry’s official account on the social media platform X retweeted the Telegraph article, commenting that “in normal countries, airports are used for travel.”

Israel has targeted Beirut’s airport before. In 1968, Israeli special forces destroyed 12 passenger planes and two cargo planes on the airport’s tarmac in retaliation for a Palestinian attack on an Israeli airliner.

In 2006, the same day that Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers, Israel bombed the airport and cut off all sea access to the country.

During the tour, journalists and diplomats were taken through a large warehouse, with airport workers looking nonplussed as the group walked between shambolic piles of boxes and floor-to-ceiling shelving units.

Responding to questions about the report, an airport security officer — who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media — insisted that everything at the airport was aboveboard.

“Of course we haven’t seen anything of what these reports are saying,” the officer said.

Richard Mujais, the head of the state-run Middle East Airlines Ground Handling (MEAG), the company that handles all cargo at the airport, said that the cargo center was certified by several world bodies, including the European Commission and the International Air Transport Assn., and that multiple security agencies were involved in checking any incoming shipments before they entered the country.

On Israel’s border with Lebanon, residents are worried that groups like Hezbollah will join a war that eventually spirals into a regionwide conflict.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces would reduce operations in Gaza and would shift their attention to Israel’s north, with the intention of securing the area, and allow the return of some 60,000 Israelis displaced from the border areas. In Lebanon, roughly 100,000 people have had to leave their homes due to Israeli bombardment.

“If we can do it politically, that would be great,” Netanyahu said. “If not, we will do it in another way, but we will bring everyone back home — all the residents of the north and the south.”

Even if you consider Walt Disney World Resort the “happiest place on earth,” it’s probably not on your list of the most affordable places to visit.

One-day tickets to Disney World in 2024 currently start at $109 per person. Of course, most people vacationing at Disney World stay for more than one day and many visit more than one park – and multiday, multipark tickets typically include discounted pricing. In addition to park admission, keep in mind you might need to pay for airfare, a hotel and food.

While the total cost of a trip can vary significantly, a Mouse Hacking blog analysis pegged a baseline Disney World vacation for a family of four at $6,865 in 2024. The blog estimated a budget trip would cost about $4,735, while a higher-end version would run about $10,696.

No matter your budget, here are a few ways to stretch your vacation dollars and make the most of your trip:

Be Flexible on Timing

Disney World started using “dynamic pricing” in 2018, meaning it charges higher prices during holidays and popular weeks and lower prices for off-peak visits. In general, you’ll find the lowest pricing in late August and early September, and for weekday visits to the parks.

“In Florida, the kids are back in school by August, so the parks are less crowded and the prices are lower,” says Dayle Bland, a personal vacation planner who specializes in Disney trips.

"Weather-wise, it’s a hotter time of year, but if you can get past that and plan your days accordingly, you can have a great visit at a better price point," she adds. 

Choose Your Hotel Carefully

Disney offers three levels of hotels – value, moderate and deluxe – with three levels of pricing.

“The great thing about Disney is that there are resorts for every budget,” says Allison DePesa, a travel advisor with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Those looking to keep costs as low as possible will likely want to stay at the “value” hotels. You can also stay in a non-Disney hotel, but it’s important to factor in the cost of transportation. Plan For Food Expenses

After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney's dining plans are back.

"If you are staying at a Disney resort on a package, you can opt for Disney Dining Plan but these might not always be the best value. Save money by bringing your own sandwiches and snacks. Small cooler bags are allowed but remember no loose ice," Carrie Bradley, a frequent Disney World visitor and founder of VisitingOrlandoWithKids.com, said in an email.

She added that you can expect to spend around $6 for a Mickey ice cream bar and should budget around $50 per person, per day for food if you eat at the parks and don’t dine at character table service restaurants.

Some guests also opt to get groceries delivered to their hotels (Disney hotels will accept and store your deliveries while you’re out) so they can make their own breakfast and bring snacks to the parks.

Set a Limit on Souvenirs

Impulse purchases at souvenir shops are an easy way to quickly bust your budget. Try to avoid spending too much time in the gift shops, where the temptation can be hard to resist – or, set a limit for how much each person can spend on souvenirs per day or throughout the vacation.

If your family really wants to get into the spirit and don Disney apparel for the trip, stock up ahead of time at stores like Target or Kohl’s, which carry licensed apparel. “They have awesome selections,” DePesa says. “Kohl’s does a whole line of family-matching Disney apparel.”

Keep an Eye Out for New Discounts

Disney does occasionally host promotions that offer discounted pricing on tickets or hotels for specific periods. For example, 4-day, 4-park Magic Tickets are currently $396 per ticket through September 22, 2024.

If you’ve already booked your visit, you or your travel agent can call Disney to have the promotion retroactively applied to your purchase, if it qualifies.

Tom Kim may have fallen just short in his battle with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship, but it hasn’t stopped bettors from reloading on the pre-tournament favorite at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Kim went head-to-head with Scheffler on the back nine, ultimately falling short on the first playoff hole, on the way to posting a second top-five finish in his last four starts.

With no Scheffler this week, Kim has the best odds in the field (+1200) and is pulling in the most handle (13.7%) on the most tickets (13.8%).

This is Kim’s ninth straight week playing a PGA TOUR event and the Korean has a seventh-place finish at Detroit Golf Club in 2022 to fall back on.

Another player generating heavy interest is Akshay Bhatia, who also had a solid week at the Travelers Championship, finishing T5.

Bhatia (+2000, down from +2200) is drawing the second-highest handle (12.1%) on the second-most tickets (9.9%).

He missed the cut in his only start at Detroit Golf Club last year but has been playing solid golf lately. He has three straight top-25 finishes, including a T16 at the U.S. Open.

Bhatia, Kim and Cameron Young (+1400) are BetMGM’s biggest liabilities this week in golf betting .
