You may be looking for a party-packed weekend with other young travelers or a family adventure with something for both kids and adults. But if you won’t settle for anything but colossal, here’s what you need to know about record-breaking ships.

What is the biggest cruise ship?

The Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world. The nearly 1,200-foot ship set sail in January 2024 and accommodates 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members, according to Royal Caribbean.

According to the DNV, the leading maritime register, the Icon of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 248,663 . Gross tonnage measures a ship’s total volume.

Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage was so highly anticipated that it nearly sold out in just a few hours, Business Insider reported. Some cruise-goers even paid $75,000 a week to stay in an exclusive three-story townhouse complete with private balconies, a whirlpool, a backyard and slides.

What is the biggest ship ever built?

The Icon of the Seas might be the biggest cruise ship to set sail, but it’s not the largest boat in the history of maritime travel. The Seawise Giant, also known as the Knock Nevis, was the biggest ship ever built at 564,739 tons, according to The New York Times.

The oil tanker was built in the 1970s but caught fire and sank in 1988 after Iraqi planes bombed an offshore terminal. A Norwegian company rescued it a year later from shallow waters and repaired it. The Seawise Giant continued transporting oil until its final journey concluded in December 2009.

How big was the Titanic?

The Titanic was about 883 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 46,329 tons – it’s sizable, but much smaller than the world’s biggest ship; the Icon of the Seas which is 1,200 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 248,663.

There were over 2,200 passengers on the Titanic – more than 1,500 of them died in the 1912 sinking.

Icon of the Seas will enter service on 27th january 2024. This largest cruise ship in the world is powered by LNG with a gross tonnage of 250,800. It has 6 multi-fuel Wartsila Engines that can run on LNG as well as distillate fuel. It also contains fuel cells for producing electricity.

It has a 2350 member crew and can accommodate 7600 guests on its 20 decks packed with entertainment facilities like theatres, play areas for children, concert halls, swimming pools water parks and so on.

2. Oasis Luxury Class: Allure of the Seas & Oasis of the Seas

The Allure of the Seas is one of the two most expensive cruise ships in operation around the world. The second ship in the Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis-class cruise ships, Allure of the Seas, was the world’s largest passenger ship when it launched in November 2009.

Reportedly, around $1.43 billion was incurred in constructing this world-class cruise ship at the STX Europe Turku shipyard in Finland.

This 1,187-foot-long vessel measures 215 feet in width with a gross registered tonnage of 225,282t. With 18 total decks, the vessel can accommodate a total of 6,780 guests and 2,200 crew members.

The main features of the ship include a two-deck dance hall, an ice skating rink, 25 dining options and a theatre with 1,380 seating capacity etc.

The first in Oasis-class luxury ships, Oasis of the Seas is another $1.4bn cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean International’s fleet. This 225,282 GRT vessel was the world’s largest cruise ship when it launched in 2008.

While all other features of the Oasis of the Seas match with its sister vessel, the length of the vessel is reportedly 50 millimetres shorter than Allure of the Seas.

However, it has been stated that the classified length of these vessels was the same, and the changes were unintentional as they happened due to the small changes in the temperature of the steel used for construction.

3. Oasis Class: Symphony of the Seas & Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis-class cruise ship Symphony of the Seas is the world’s largest passenger ship currently in service. Thus, for obvious reasons, Symphony of the Seas is one the most expensive cruise ships in the world now, with a cost of production of $1.35 billion .

Built by STX France, the vessel measures 1188 feet in length, 215.5 feet in width and 238 feet in height, with a gross registered tonnage of 228,081t.

The ship that started its maiden voyage in April 2018 features 18 decks and is capable of accommodating a maximum of 6,680 passengers and a 2,200-person crew.

The features aboard this luxury cruise ship include 22 restaurants, 24 pools, a children’s water park, an ice-skating rink, a full-size basketball court, two 43-foot rock-climbing walls, etc.

Another Oasis-class cruise ship of Royal Caribbean International, Harmony of the Seas , is another expensive luxury passenger vessel currently in service.

Despite costing Royal Caribbean the same expense as its sister vessel ($1.35 billion), Harmony of the Seas comes behind Symphony of the Seas due to the 1,100 tons difference in size from the former.

The 228,081GRT vessel is also 1,188 feet long, 215.5 wide and 238 feet in height. With 2,747 staterooms in various sizes, Harmony of the Seas is capable of housing 6,687 passengers in addition to 2,200 crew members.

Similar to its sister ship, Harmony of the Seas features several dining and entertainment options abroad. Started construction in 2014, the ship set its first sail in May 2016 to Southampton from the facility of STX France.

4. MSC World Europa

The most expensive cruise ship in terms of building cost in MSC cruises, the MSC World Europa is one of the green fuel ships present today. Powered by LNG, one of the world’s cleanest marine fuels, and featuring breakthrough green technologies, MSC World Europa symbolizes the beginning of a new era of cruising. These unique and environmental features make MSC World Europa one of the most expensive cruise ships in the world, with a build cost of a whopping USD 1.25 Billion.

Another example of MSC Cruises’ long-term environmental commitment and responsibility to the future, this unique prototype features a ground-breaking design where every detail offers you an entirely new cruising experience. On 29 June 2020, MSC held the keel-laying ceremony for the ship renamed MSC World Europa,

The 153,518 GRT vessel is 1060 feet long, 135 feet wide and 245 feet in height. The height of MSC world Europa is almost 10 feet more than the world’s most expensive ship – The Oasis-class Allure of the Seas. With 22 decks, the MSC World Europa is capable of housing 5079 passengers in addition to 1413 crew members.

5. Norwegian Epic

One of the most expensive ships of Norwegian cruise lines, the Norwegian Epic, cost 1.2 billion U.S. dollars to build because of its unique design and size.

The ship has one of the largest Aqua Parks and cabins for single passengers. When built, it was the third-largest cruise ship in the world to carry 4,228 passengers. It was recently refurbished in 2020, making it an updated luxury to travel.

With 155,873 Gross Tonnage, it measures 329.45 meters in length and 52 meters in width.

6. AIDAnova

AIDA Cruises’ first of the new Excellence-class ships, AIDAnova , is reportedly the fifth-biggest passenger vessel in the world. The cost of producing this 337-meter-long luxury vessel, built by Meyer Werft in Germany, is a reported $1.1 billion.

Launched in December 2018, AIDA Nova’s highlight is the Green Cruising concept- the world’s first cruise ship that can be powered at sea and in port by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The 183,900 GT AIDAnova features more than 2,600 passenger cabins, with a capacity to accommodate 6,600 passengers and up to 1,500 crew members.

The vessel has a total of 17 restaurants, 23 bars, a luxury day spa, a 360-degree theatre, etc., to meet the passengers’ luxurious dining and entertainment needs.

7. Meraviglia class cruise ship: MSC Meraviglia & MSC Bellissima

MSC Cruises MSC Meraviglia cruise ship is the lead ship of MSC’s new class of vessels being built by STX France. The cost of production of one ship in this class is reportedly around $ 1 billion as this vessel is part of the Geneva-based line’s $10.2 billion investment for a total of 11 vessels to be delivered by 2026.

Set its first sail in June 2017, MSC Meraviglia was the world’s 4th largest cruise ship when it launched, behind Oasis-class ships.

The 315.8-meter-long MSC Meraviglia features 15-passenger decks and has the capacity to house 4,500 passengers and 1,536 crew members.

MSC Bellissima , a sister ship of MSC Meraviglia, is the second Meraviglia class cruise ship of MSC Cruises. Another ship from $ 1 billion, MSC Bellissima, made her maiden voyage in March this year.

Constructed by STX France at its Chantiers de l’Atlantique facility in France, the 171,598 GT MSC Bellissima has almost similar features to its sister ship.

8. Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Line’s brand-new behemoth luxury ship- Norwegian Bliss – which set sail last year, also joins the list with about $1 billion in production costs.

Built by Meyer Werft, the 168,028 GT Norwegian Bliss has a length of 1,094 ft, a moulded beam of 136.2 ft and a maximum draft of 29.53 ft.

With 20 decks, the vessel features 2,220 cabins that can accommodate 4,000 passengers in addition to 1700 crew members. Norwegian Bliss offers guests a great vacation experience, elegant suites, several themed dining areas and bars, a 20,000 sq. ft Observation Lounge, an 800-seat Bliss Theatre and a two-storey go-kart track, etc.

9. Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Edge is another new billion-dollar luxury ship currently in service. Built by STX France, Celebrity Edge is the first Edge-class cruise ship of her owner and started her maiden voyage in December 2018.

This 1,004 ft-long vessel has a tonnage of 130,818GT and is capable of accommodating 2,918 passengers and 1,377 crew members.

Among other entertainment and dining facilities, the ship is known for its most technologically advanced theatre, offering a one-of-a-kind entertainment experience with panoramic projection screens, rotating spiral staircases, etc.

10. Carnival Mardi Gras

Carnival Cruise’s recent addition was Carnival Mardi Gras, which cost around $950 Million and was delivered in 2020. This is the largest ship in the fleet, measuring 184,000 gross tonnages and having 2641 rooms. It features BOLT™: Ultimate Sea Coaster, the first roller ever on a cruise ship.

The Mardi Gras is fitted with LNG-powered main engines, which are environmentally friendly with cheaper operating costs than conventional marine engines.

It will also help the company comply with new restrictions on heavy sulfur fuels that started in 2020.

11. P&O Iona

This 185,000 tonnes and 345 meters longship from P&O Cruises is the largest cruise ship in the UK market today, built at $950 million.

This massive building budget includes many luxuries, including the world’s first gin distillery on cruise ships. Iona is P&O’s greenest ship as it is powered by LNG-fueled engines.

12. Quantum-class cruise ships

Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum-class cruise ships are reportedly the third-largest class of cruise ships behind their owners’ Oasis-class and MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia class ships by gross tonnage.

The three ships in this class- Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, and Ovation of the Seas- have almost similar features and the cost of production, i.e. about $9.4 million.

The three ships in this series started their maiden voyage in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively. Among these 168,666GT vessels, the first two vessels have a length of 1,139 ft and a maximum beam of 162 ft, while the third vessel has a length of 1,142 ft and a maximum beam of 160 ft.

The Quantum-class cruise ships can house a maximum of 4,905 passengers and 1,500 crew members.

Icon of the Seas: Everything you need to know about the largest cruise ship in the world

The world's largest cruise ship, complete with 20 decks and six waterslides, is getting ready to set sail for the first time.

Royal Caribbean's "Icon of the Seas" is in Port Miami getting ready for its maiden voyage into the Caribbean. NBC News correspondent Sam Brock got a firsthand look at the breathtaking ship on TODAY on before it heads out to sea.

Here's what to know about the record-setting cruise ship.

How big is the Icon of the Seas ship?

A seven-year building process in Finland resulted in a ship that's 1,198 feet long and features 20 decks. It can carry more than 7,000 passengers, and combined with the crew, will hold nearly 10,000 people — the size of a small city.

At 250,800 gross tons and nearly 1,200 feet long, it makes the Titanic look like a tugboat. For comparison, the Titanic was 882.9 feet long and 46,328 gross tons.

What are some of the amenities on the Icon of the Seas?

There are eight "neighborhoods" geared to all different experiences, from the shopping area of "Central Park" to the pools and cabanas of "Chill Island."

They also are in proximity to one another so parents can relax in the pool while the kids go flying down one of the six slides in the nearby water park area of "Thrill Island."

“You’re not competing with another cruise, you’re competing with any other vacation a family would want to do," Royal Caribbean senior vice president Jay Schneider told Brock on TODAY.

"So we purposely put a more adult-centric pool next to the slide structure so you know mom, dad can sit and immerse in the water while the kid goes on like 50 slides."

In keeping with the theme of the ship, a bar named "Swim & Tonic" is the largest swim-up bar ever put on a cruise ship, according to Schneider.

There also is a three-story glass structure known as "The Pearl," which Schneider said is the world's largest "kinetic" art sculpture.

The vessel also includes a theater that features performances of Broadway's "Wizard of Oz."

For the more adventurous, there's the "Crown's Edge" walk, which Brock tested out on TODAY. He strapped into a harness that took him along a zipline that allows passengers to dangle along the side of the ship, 150 feet above the water.

How much does a trip on the Icon of the Seas cost?

A seven-night round trip from Miami to the eastern Caribbean that includes a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas costs an average of $2,019 per person, according to the cruise line's website . It's an average of $1,809 for the package without the stop at the island.

That package also includes stops in St. Thomas and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The demand for that journey is so overwhelming that the earliest trip currently being booked is for Oct. 11, 2025.

There's also a trip to the western Caribbean for $1,759 per person with a stop at the island, which is called Perfect Day at Coco Cay.

When is the Icon of the Sea's release date?

The maiden voyage for the gargantuan vessel is coming up on Jan. 27, leaving out of Port Miami.

Royal Caribbean is taking bookings for the alternating trips to the eastern and western Caribbean, with the earliest available being a seven-night trip that departs on Feb. 24 and costs an average of $2,297 per person, according to its website.

In a press release on Wednesday, the cruise line said it was "the longest and most comprehensive world cruise out there."

The company said the Ultimate World Cruise, set to depart from Miami, would visit more than 150 destinations in 65 countries on all seven continents.

Royal Caribbean said stops would include Casablanca in Morocco; the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Antarctica; Brazil, where passengers can see the Christ the Redeemer statue on New Year's Eve; and Beijing.

The cruise starts at $61,000 per person

The inaugural cruise is scheduled to depart from Miami on December 10, 2023, and return on September 10, 2024.

Passengers would travel on the Serenade of the Seas , which has 13 decks and a mini-golf course, an arcade, a rock-climbing wall, a pool, a theater, and a spa. The ship can accommodate almost 2,500 passengers and more than 800 crew members, Royal Caribbean said.

Prices start at $61,000 for a person in an interior stateroom, rising to $65,000 for an oceanview stateroom and $79,000 for a balcony stateroom. A stay in a junior suite starts at $112,000 per person.

Royal Caribbean said passengers would get a 10% discount if they pay in full by January 6, 2023.

The pandemic ground world travel to a halt last year, and cruise lines' revenue plummeted . Carnival Cruises said in June 2020 that it would sell six cruise ships after posting a $4.4 billion loss.

How much it costs to sail aboard the world’s largest cruise ship.

This fall, Royal Caribbean opened up bookings for its newest, super-sized cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, which will set sail in January 2024 .

The record-breaking ship weighs 250,800 tons — 6% more than the current size leader among cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, The Points Guy reported. The massive ship will be able to hold up to 7,600 passengers — also setting a record with the number of passengers it can accommodate on board. In addition, with six waterslides, it has the most of any cruise ship.

Royal Caribbean is touting its new ship as the “Icon of Vacations,” offering a first-of-its-kind combination of the “best of every vacation,” from a beach retreat to a theme park adventure. But does cruising on this super-sized ship come with a super-sized cost?

Here’s a look at how much it costs to sail aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, plus what you can anticipate getting to experience on board.

How Much It Costs To Cruise on the Icon of the Seas

The Icon of the Seas will offer four different seven-night routes, with starting prices ranging from an average of $998 to $1,409 per person.

A seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise departing from Miami with stops in Roatan, Honduras; Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and CocoCay, Bahamas, starts at $998 per person for an interior cabin, with suites costing as much as $4,848 ($2,424 per person based on two people per suite). Cruises departing in February 2024 and traveling to the Western Caribbean start at $1,409 per person.

The Icon also will be making two Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day cruises, both departing from Miami. One will make stops in Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and CocoCay, Bahamas; the other will make stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and CocoCay, Bahamas. Prices for both of these routes start at $1,058 per person, with suites costing as much as $5,665 ($2,832.50 per person based on two people per suite).

What Cruisers Can Expect Aboard the Ship

The sheer scope of the Icon of the Seas may be hard to fathom. It features 18 guest decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools, nine whirlpools and six waterslides. It also features eight “neighborhoods” including the club-like AquaDome, an on-board park dubbed Central Park, a beach club called The Hideaway and the family-friendly Surfside, which includes an aquapark and an adults-only pool.

It’s also home to Category 6, the largest water park at sea, and the Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea. There’s also plenty to eat (and drink), as it features 40 new and returning dining, bar and nightlife options.

Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas

Icon of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship afloat when it debuts in January 2024. The next-level megaship is Royal Caribbean 's first Icon-class vessel and the first of three ships powered by liquefied natural gas, or LNG, which is considered a more sustainable alternative to other fuel options. The ship will have 2,805 staterooms and carry up to 2,350 crew. There's no end to the fun with eight unique neighborhoods, including the new Surfside: a stay-all-day space designed specifically for families.

Other features on the ship include seven pools, nine whirlpools and six record-breaking waterslides. There are also more than 20 new dining venues, such as the swanky Empire Supper Club, which features an eight-course tasting menu; the AquaDome Market, the line's first food hall; and sushi restaurant Izumi in the Park. Cruisers will also find other international cuisine, including Japanese, Mexican and Italian fare, as well as The Lemon Post, the Surfside Eatery and Pier 7 in the Surfside neighborhood.

Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's first LNG-powered Oasis-class ship will sail its debut voyage in July 2024. The new ship will have 2,834 staterooms and up to 2,290 crew members, as well as eight neighborhoods to keep passengers entertained. Ten complimentary dining venues include the line's new food truck concept, The Spare Tire, which serves up handheld eats on the pool deck. The ship will also feature sloping beach-entry and resort-style pools, plus three Lime & Coconut bars on the outdoor deck.

In total, there are more than 40 dining options, bars and lounges on Utopia of the Seas. Many of Royal Caribbean's specialty dining and bar favorites are returning, such as Chops Grille, Giovanni's Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, Rising Tide Bar and Vue Bar. Guests will also find familiar entertainment offerings with rock climbing walls, the AquaTheater, Splashaway Bay, laser tag, mini-golf, the Sports Court, Studio B and much more. Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's current largest ship at sea, Wonder of the Seas , first set sail in March 2022. The Oasis-class vessel has 2,867 staterooms and carries as many as 2,204 crew members. While you may get lost on this ship, you'll never be bored. Features include eight unique neighborhoods – such as Central Park, the Boardwalk, and the new Suite Class neighborhood, an exclusive space for suite guests.

Take advantage of the AquaTheater, an outdoor live entertainment venue with a 30-foot diving platform and incredible ocean views. Wonder Playscape is an underwater-themed outdoor space for kids filled with slides, climbing walls, games and more. You can also enjoy a few of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class favorites, such as the FlowRider surf simulator, the rock climbing wall or laser tag at the Battle for Planet Z. Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas , another Oasis-class ship, debuted in April 2018. This ship features 2,759 passenger staterooms and accommodates 2,200 crew members. There are seven distinct neighborhoods, four pools, roughly 20 restaurants (about half of which are specialty venues), and about a dozen bars and lounges. The ship even boasts two robotic bartenders that whip up drinks at the Bionic Bar.

Adults can enjoy Broadway-style shows in the onboard theaters and major international sports games at Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Meanwhile, kids can cool down at the Splashaway Bay water park, soar on a zip line nine decks high through the Boardwalk neighborhood, try out rock climbing or attend a show at the AquaTheater.

Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

Another Oasis-class ship, Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas has been sailing since May 2016. The vessel features 2,747 staterooms and up to 2,200 crew members. Cruisers have plenty of places to dine thanks to eight complimentary venues – including the main dining room and Windjammer Marketplace, a globally inspired buffet – as well as nine specialty restaurants serving everything from burgers and shakes to Italian fare. The Boardwalk, one of the ship's seven neighborhoods, is a favorite spot for cruisers; it contains casual eateries, retail shops and carnival games.

Harmony of the Seas also has Splashaway Bay, the Ultimate Abyss waterslide and a trio of slides called The Perfect Storm. In the evening, don't miss a pre-dinner cocktail at the Rising Tide Bar, which offers a ride between the Central Park neighborhood and the Royal Promenade with dazzling skylight views. Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world when it was launched in 2009. The line's debut Oasis-class ship is nearly five times bigger than the Titanic by gross tonnage; it has 2,801 staterooms and carries 2,109 crew members.

Oasis of the Seas was reimagined in 2019, with many added amenities that are on newer Oasis-class ships, such as FlowRider simulators, the Perfect Storm waterslides, the Ultimate Abyss and Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Across the ship's seven distinct neighborhoods, you'll also find state-of-the-art technology such as VOOM, billed as the fastest internet connection on the high seas – plus exciting live performances and theater productions, laser tag, escape rooms and more.

Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas

Embarking for the first time in 2010, Allure of the Seas was Royal Caribbean's second Oasis-class vessel. The ship underwent a refurbishment in 2015. Allure of the Seas has 2,748 staterooms and 2,054 crew. Onboard highlights include seven neighborhoods, four pools, and several whirlpools and hot tubs, plus more than 20 dining venues and too many bars and lounges to count.

There are also plenty of entertainment options for guests of all ages, including an ice skating rink, the Sports Court, a nine-deck-high zip line, two rock climbing walls and two FlowRider simulators (a Royal Caribbean favorite). Kids will especially enjoy the interactive H2O Zone Water Park. Adults on this ship will appreciate Broadway productions like "Mamma Mia!," aerial acrobatic performances in Oceanaria (an original AquaTheater production) and '70s disco dance parties. If you find yourself on board for business reasons, rest assured that the ship's conference facilities can host as many as 1,394 guests.

MSC World Europa

MSC World Europa was one of the most anticipated new cruise ships when it launched in December 2022 as the first vessel in the line's MSC World-class fleet. It's also the first LNG-propelled ship by MSC Cruises , reaching a maximum cruising speed of 22.7 knots.

The ship's futuristic interior and exterior design features a 341-foot-long promenade. Half the promenade is covered with the Meraviglia-class LED sky screens, while the other half is open-air and offers ocean views. MSC World Europa features 2,626 staterooms and can house 2,138 crew members. As a special touch, each passenger deck is named after an international city, including London, Paris, Lisbon and Rome.

The ship is divided into distinct areas, with a quiet zen district for adults and a family zone that has bumper cars and roller skating. At the fleet's largest onboard water park, younger cruisers will find a twisty, stainless steel tunnel slide towering 11 decks high at the center of the ship. Luna Park Arena, the ship's 300-seat multifunction entertainment venue, can accommodate almost any performance or event.

When you're exhausted from all of the action, grab a bite to eat at one of 13 restaurants or a drink at a selection of bars and cafes. Then, take time to relax and unwind with a signature treatment at the Balinese-inspired MSC Aurea Spa. For an all-inclusive VIP experience during your voyage, book stateroom accommodations in the MSC Yacht Club. This exclusive part of the ship boasts premium suites, a separate pool, a private restaurant and lounge, butler service, and other amenities.

Costa Smeralda

Costa Smeralda was the first of the two Excellence-class vessels in the Costa Cruises fleet. The vessel debuted in 2019 as the Italian cruise line's largest ship to date. It was also the line's first vessel to use LNG power at sea and in port. The ship has 2,612 staterooms and can carry as many as 1,678 crew members.

Cruisers will never go hungry or thirsty, thanks to the 11 restaurants and snack bars plus 19 bars and lounges on Smeralda . One of the most notable dining venues on board is Archipelago, which serves innovative cuisine created by three world-renowned chefs. If you're interested in culinary pursuits, join other passengers for a cooking class at sea in the Food LAB. When it comes to entertainment, centrally located Colosseo – modeled after the piazzas across Italy – is the place to go for socializing and live performances. What's more, the ship also has 13 pools and hot tubs, an aqua park, the Beauty Spa Solemio, and the Squok Club for kids ages 3 to 11.

Costa Toscana

Costa Toscana, Costa Cruises' newest flagship and the second Excellence-class vessel in the fleet, set sail on its debut voyage in March 2022. Similar in size and passenger capacity to Costa Smeralda, Toscana is also LNG-powered. This vessel has 2,663 staterooms, and there can be up to 1,678 crew members on board.

Similar to Smeralda, Colosseo is the centerpiece of Toscana; you'll find live entertainment and themed bars in this area. There are 11 restaurants and snack bars plus 19 bars and lounges on the ship. For a refreshing aperitif with a view, head to the Aperol Spritz Bar, which features special beach cocktails. Another dining highlight is Sushino at Costa, the line's new sushi bistro. After dinner, take in unparalleled views of the sea along the Volare Skywalk, the highest point of the ship, which towers more than 200 feet above sea level.

P&O Cruises Arvia

Arvia joined the P&O fleet as sister ship to Iona in December 2022. It is also LNG-powered, has 2,614 cabins and carries up to 1,800 crew. The family-friendly ship offers guests many firsts, including Altitude, a new activity area with an escape room, a high-ropes experience, the Splash Valley aqua zone, the Sports Arena and much more.

Arvia has 30 bars and restaurants. New dining venues include the American-inspired 6th Street Diner and Green & Co. feat. Mizuhana, which focuses on sushi and plant-based dishes. For entertainment, plan to see the line's production of "The Official Take That Musical," an adaptation of London West End musical "The Band." Guests can also head to the dome beneath the SkyDome retractable roof for live performances, aerial displays, movies on the giant SeaScreen and DJ parties under the starry skies.

The sister ship to AIDAnova, AIDAcosma set sail in early 2022. The partly LNG-powered AIDA Cruises vessel has 2,732 staterooms and the capacity for up to around 1,500 crew members. With 17 restaurants and 23 bars and cafes, AIDAcosma offers passengers a seemingly endless number of venues to dine and imbibe. Other onboard attractions include a four-deck outdoor area, complete with an infinity pool and an expansive area for sunbathing; an indoor playground with a bouldering wall and ropes course; the Body & Soul Spa; and a 360-degree stage at the Theatrium.

P&O Cruises Iona

Length: 1,129 feet

Gross tons: 184,000

P&O Cruises' Iona, which launched in spring 2021, has the distinction of being the first LNG-powered British cruise ship. The family-friendly vessel has 2,614 cabins and carries 1,800 crew members. Iona's top features include the two-story SkyDome, a gin distillery, four pools, 10 entertainment venues, and 30 restaurants and bars offering a wide variety of food and beverage options.

With selections ranging from casual eateries to gelaterias to Indian- and British-inspired cuisine at Sindhu, you won't get bored with the restaurant choices. For an especially unique meal, dine and sip wine while watching aerial performances in the Grand Atrium at The Glass House. Or, enjoy dinner at The Limelight Club, an adults-only supper club venue featuring vocal performances and other live music. After dinner, check out the entertainment around the ship, including aerial productions in the Grand Atrium, guest and crew shows in Headliners, late night dancing in The Club House, and performances in partnership with the entertainment company Creativiva in the SkyDome.

When German line AIDA Cruises' first Helios-class ship, AIDAnova, debuted in December 2018, it was the first LNG-powered cruise ship in the world. The ship is equipped with 2,626 staterooms, including the two-deck Penthouse Suite, and carries around 1,500 crew members. You won't miss this ship when it's docked in port: It features the line's signature exterior design, with bold red lips at the ship's bow and blue-and-yellow eyes on the port and starboard sides.

While on board, passengers can check out 17 restaurants, along with 23 bars and lounges; party the night away at the Beach Club; and take in live performances on the 360-degree stage in the Theatrium. When it's time to relax, head to the Body & Soul Spa, where you can book a massage, spend time in one of the hot tubs or saunas, take a dip in the private pool, and chill out on the private spa sun deck.

Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Jubilee, as sister ship to Carnival Celebration and Carnival Mardi Gras, will offer many of the same features and amenities as its two predecessors when it launches in December 2023. The new vessel will have 2,687 staterooms, 1,735 crew and six zones of fun. Currents and The Shores are new to Jubilee . Currents is inspired by the underworld of the ocean with mermaids and sea monsters; it's designed with new bars, restaurants, music venues and high-tech spaces, including a wave-shaped LED ceiling and six LED windows that virtually take guests under the sea. The Shores is all about the outdoors, inspired by beaches and boardwalks. Cruisers can grab a slice of pizza at Coastal Slice, a hot dog at Beach Buns and a cocktail at Marina Bar.

On Jubilee, you'll also find Carnival Cruise Line favorites such as BOLT, the first and fastest roller coaster at sea, as well as Waterworks, the onboard water park with twin racing slides, three spiraling slides and more. The line's "next-level fun" ship will also include familiar eateries and lounges like Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken, Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, Cucina del Capitano, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and more.

Carnival Celebration

Carnival Celebration sailed its inaugural cruise in November 2022. Carnival's second-newest ship at sea is LNG-powered and the second in the line's Excel class, with 2,687 staterooms and as many as 1,735 crew. Guests will find new attractions to enjoy on the ship, such as the partnership with the Kennedy Space Center at Space Cruisers: This program is designed for children ages 2 to 11 at Camp Ocean.

Adults can check out the new bar at Latitudes, which features specialty cocktails and outdoor scenery through the virtual windows. Celebration has a variety of complimentary dining venues, including Shaq's Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and Mexican favorites at BlueIguana Cantina. There is also a selection of specialty restaurants like Emeril's Bistro 1397, Rudi's Seagrill, the Steakhouse and Bonsai Teppanyaki. For action and 360-degree views of the ocean from the top of the ship, take a spin around the track on the BOLT roller coaster.

MSC Euribia

MSC Euribia, the newest MSC Cruises ship, debuted in June 2023. The line's second LNG-powered vessel – and the fifth Meraviglia-class ship – has 2,419 cabins and can carry as many as 1,711 crew members. The ship's hull features Alex Flämig's artwork "#SaveTheSea" to highlight the company's dedication to preserving the marine ecosystem.

On board Euribia , guests will find five pools and 11 dining venues, offering everything from sushi and teppanyaki to Latin American street food. There are also 21 bars and lounges, the MSC Aurea Spa, the Ocean Cay Aquapark, luxury retail shopping and more. Two additional highlights are the longest – and most impressive – LED Dome at Sea, which covers the ceiling of Galleria Euribia, and the reimagined Carousel Lounge. The beautiful, updated space features floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor terraces and cozy seating to enjoy live entertainment, including performances by one of the largest big bands at sea.

MSC Virtuosa

This vessel launched in 2021 as a sister ship to MSC Grandiosa , the line's other Meraviglia Plus-class ship. MSC Virtuosa has 2,421 staterooms and carries around 1,704 crew members. Carnival Mardi Gras

One of Carnival Cruise Line's newest ships, Mardi Gras , debuted in July 2021. Its name honors the line's first ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, which launched in 1972. The original Mardi Gras was around 27,000 gross tons and 650 feet long – in contrast, the new Carnival Mardi Gras weighs more than six times as much and is nearly twice as long. This ship also holds the title as North America's first LNG-powered ship. It has 2,641 staterooms and holds up to 1,745 crew members.

MSC Cruises' Meraviglia first set sail in 2017 with an impressive 2,244 staterooms and the capacity to carry 1,536 crew members. Norwegian Encore was built in 2019 as one of Norwegian Cruise Line 's Breakaway Plus-class ships. The vessel has 2,040 staterooms and carries 1,735 crew members. There are several complimentary culinary venues on board, including three main dining rooms, The Local Bar & Grill, the Garden Café buffet, and grab-and-go options. Specialty dining restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, from seafood to steak to Japanese teppanyaki.

When it's time for cocktail hour, 14 bars and lounges serve up everything from cold brews to fine wine and whiskey. For a pre-dinner option, head up to the Observation Lounge for panoramic ocean views. There are currently twelve cruise ships that cost at least $1 billion to build. Five of the top twelve are part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class, which have an average volume of 227,000 in gross tonnage.

The modern cruise ship is a marvel of engineering, towering many stories above the water and capable of carrying thousands of passengers across entire oceans . If you're interested in traveling on one of these floating behemoths, you've got plenty of options to choose from, and pretty much all of them are going to be big.

But still, you might be wondering, what is the largest ship in the world , and can I hop aboard for a cruise?

Biggest Ship on Earth: The Seawise Giant (260,941 GT)

While you've no doubt been awed by the sheer size of the biggest cruise ships, some of the very largest and longest ships in the world are actually not for carrying people. Instead, they are for shipping commodities such as oil or dry goods.

Technically, the largest ship in the world was the Seawise Giant, an oil tanker that was built in 1979, later scrapped in 2010. At a gross tonnage of 260,941, and a length of 1,504 feet (458 meters), with a beam of 225 feet (69 meters), it remains unsurpassed in either the commercial or recreational world.

Below is a list of the undisputed titans in the world of cruise ships. You'll notice that not all of the cruise lines are represented in this list, since only a few have attempted to build the very biggest. Other competitors, like the Norwegian Cruise Line, barely enter the top 30.

When measuring cruise ships, there are a few key stats to keep in mind.

Gross tonnage (GT) : This is the main way that a ship's overall internal volume is determined. It doesn't refer to weight, although you can be sure that a big GT number means a very heavy ship.
Length : Also called "length overall," this measurement is easy. It's the overall length of the vessel's hull, measured as a line parallel to the water. It should come as no surprise that the largest ships, as measured in gross tonnage, are also often the longest ships.
Beam : This is sailor speak for width. It's a measurement of the ship at its widest point.
Maximum passenger capacity : A pretty straightforward metric, this number refers to the maximum amount of passengers the ship can take on a cruise.

1. The Icon of the Seas (250,800 GT)

In 2024, Royal Caribbean International released the Icon of the Seas — which, at 250,800 GT, with a maximum capacity of 7600 passengers, immediately became the world's largest cruise ship (and for that matter, the largest passenger ship in history). It boasts a length of 1,197 feet (365 meters) and a beam of 217 feet (66 meters).

This floating resort cruises from Miami, Florida to various ports of call in the Caribbean Sea. It's known for having the largest swimming pool and the most water slides (six) of any ocean vessel.

2. The Utopia of the Seas (236,473 GT)

Also owned and operated by Royal Caribbean, the Utopia of the Seas took her maiden voyage in 2024. The maximum capacity is 6,509, it has a GT of 236,473, a length of 1,185 feet (361 meters) and a beam of 210 feet (64 meters).

The last of Royal Caribbean International's Oasis Class ships, it's also the first ship of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Utopia of the Seas' home port is currently Port Canaveral, Florida.

3. The Wonder of the Seas (235,600 GT)

Once again a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, the Wonder of the Seas was the biggest cruise ship in the world when it debuted in 2022. It has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,988, a GT of 235,600, a length of 1,188 feet (362 meters) and a beam of 210 feet (64 meters).

Featuring a boardwalk, solarium, zip line and much more, the Wonder of the Seas is meant to be a full-on vacation on the water. It sails from Port Canaveral, Florida.

4. The Symphony of the Seas (228,081 GT)

Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 228,081, a length of 1,184 feet (361 meters), a beam of 216 feet (66 meters) and a maximum capacity of 6,680. When it debuted in 2018, it was the largest cruise ship in the world, taking her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Symphony of the Seas now calls the Port of Miami home. Its onboard amenities include a rock climbing wall, laser tag and various dining and nightlife options.

5. Harmony of the Seas (226,963 GT)

Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas, released in 2016, was the largest ship in the world for all of two years (it was surpassed by the previous entry, Symphony of the Seas, in 2018). It has a gross tonnage of 226,963, a length of 1,188 feet (362 meters), a beam of 216 feet (66 meters) and a maximum capacity of 6,687.

The Harmony of the Seas' home port is Galveston, Texas. Like her Oasis Class sister ships, the passenger area is divided into "neighborhoods," which gives a sense of the ship's scale.

6. Oasis of the Seas (226,838 GT)

Made for Royal Caribbean International, the Oasis of the Seas was the flagship of the Oasis Class cruise ships, designed to be the largest cruise ships in the world. She has a gross tonnage of 226,838, a length of 1,180 feet (360 meters) a beam of 198 feet (61 meters), and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,771.

Her maiden voyage was in December 2009, making her the largest passenger ship in the world at that time. Currently, the Oasis of the Seas sails from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to various Caribbean ports of call.

7. Allure of the Seas (225,282 GT)

A sister ship of the Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas is just a tad smaller. Launched in 2010, she has a gross tonnage of 225,282, a length of 1,180 feet (360 meters), a beam of 198 feet (61 meters) and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,780.

Currently the Allure of the Seas calls Port Canaveral, Florida home, and offers 3 or 4 night cruises to the Bahamas and back. It has a wide range of amenities, from a skating rink to an onboard park with around 12,00 plants.

8. MSC World Europa (215,863 GT)

So far, as you may have noticed, all of the biggest cruise ships have belonged to Royal Caribbean International. Now we get a fresh name on the list!

Operated by MSC cruises, the World Europa took her maiden voyage in 2022, entering the top 10 on the list of world's largest cruise ships. With a gross tonnage of 215,863, a length of 1,094 feet (333 meters), a beam of 154 feet (47 meters) and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,762, the World Europa can compete with the Oasis Class cruise ships for sheer size.

The World Europa sails from Qatar and was actually used as a floating hotel during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha. The ship runs on liquefied natural gas, unlike the diesel fuel that powers most cruise ships in the world.

9. Costa Toscana (186,364 GT)

Further mixing up our cruise line listing, the Costa Toscana is operated by Costa Cruises, and is the largest cruise ship of that company's line. Launched in 2021, she has a gross tonnage of 186,364, a length of 1,106 feet (337 meters), a beam of 138 feet (42 meters) and passenger capacity of 6,554.

The Costa Toscana is thoroughly European, sailing the Mediterranean and stopping at various ports of call in that sea. Passengers can expect to hear various languages spoken, and an upscale, continental vibe to their journey.

10. Arvia (185,581 GT)

The Arvia took her maiden voyage in 2022 from Southampton, UK, to the Canary Islands. The only cruise ship in the top 10 from P&O cruises, she has a gross tonnage of 185,581, a length of 1,130 feet (345 meters), a beam of 138 feet (42 meters) and a maximum capacity of 6,685.

The Arvia sails in the Mediterranean during the summer, and in the Caribbean during the wintertime. Among its many amenities is a sky dome that can be retracted during pleasant weather.

The invention of the modern cruise is a relatively recent phenomenon. Back in the olden days of trans-oceanic travel, journeys were arduous and risky, and the idea of traveling for pleasure on the high seas would've been seen as close to insanity.

Sure, people did go a-sailing for adventure, but that's a far cry from what's promised by modern ships, which are meant to be as luxurious as possible.

Starting in the early 19th century, technology and economic conditions had made it possible for the modern cruise ship to exist. Unlike ocean liners (think of the ill-fated Titanic , probably the most famous ocean liner), which were principally means of transportation, a cruise ship would travel a relatively short distance with various ports of call where passengers could go ashore and see the local sights.

Current cruise ship technology allows for every amenity one would find in a highly rated hotel, and then some. Modern cruise ships boast a variety of entertainment options, from bars to concerts to water slides and mall-like shopping outlets.

The size and complexity of these ships requires considerable organization and resources to operate. They have two basic components of a cruise ship crew : the sailing crew, headed by the captain, and the hospitality staff, which is managed much like that of a hotel.

The world's largest river cruise ship is Victoria Sabrina . The 2020-launched riverboat is China-built, owned by Victoria Cruises China and deployed year-round on Yangtze River. The vessel has the impressive volume of 17000 GT-tons, LOA length 150 m (492 ft), width 22 m (72 ft), 7 decks (5 with cabins), 270 staterooms, max capacity 690 passengers plus 195 crew/staff.

Oasis-class - biggest cruise ship in the world ever built

World's currently largest cruise ship class is produced exclusively for RCI-Royal Caribbean andin 2 sub-series - Oasis-Class (Allure OTS, Oasis OTS) and Oasis-Plus (Harmony OTS, Symphony OTS, Wonder OTS). These are sisterships from the fleet of the second- largest cruise shipping company in the world - RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (as shipowner) that follows only Carnival Corporation (as shipowner).

As to vessels' dimensions, each boasts the unimaginable weight of 227,000-230,000 GT / gross tons, LOA length 362 m (1187 ft) and waterline width 47 m (154 ft). The extreme breadth is over 60 m (198 ft). As the GT is a volume measurement, the ship's actual mass (called displacement) is approx 100,000 tons (the hull alone weighs about 54,000 tons). Surpassing all passenger ship standards, building cost and all previous ship travel vacation concepts, the Oasis-class ships are currently the only passenger shipping vessels of such immense size.

Other interesting numbers are the above waterline height (72 m / 236 ft), depth (23 m / 74 ft below waterline), 16 passenger decks, draft/draught (9,3 m / 31 ft), cruising/service speed 23 knots (26 mph / 42 kph), capacity 5400 passengers at double occupancy (max 6296 / 6870) and officers+crew capacity 2165.

The world's biggest cruise ship propulsion system guarantees the perfect maneuverability by 3 rotatable Azipod thrusters (suspended under the ship's stern), each with a huge electric motor and a 6 m (20 ft) propeller. The ship offers great stability due to its enormous size. And in times of need - there are 18 lifeboats, each with a capacity of 370 people.

Oasis-Plus class is also currently the world's most technologically advanced and energy-efficient cruise vessel ever built. It is equipped with a new-generation exhaust gas cleaning system (multi-stream scrubbers) and with a hull lubrication system allowing the ship to float on air bubbles (created around the hull) thus reducing drag and increasing fuel efficiency.

Regarding cruise accommodations , this class of vessels has some of the largest suites at sea - measuring 150 m2 (over 1600 ft2, balcony included). Another signature feature is the 7 "neighborhoods" (theme-park-like areas), 5 large swimming pools, a huge casino, a full-size volleyball/basketball court, large-capacity bars, and lounges. Oasis-Plus ships additionally have waterslides (created by Aquatic Design & Engineering) and a total of 23 "water fun" areas (swimming pools, large-size outdoor jacuzzies, waterslides, flowriders/surf simulators). The stern-located Ultimate Abyss water slide is 150 ft (45,70 m) above sea level. It features 31 sections, two 360-degree circles, 27-degree slide incline, 28 m (92 ft) serpentine-like drop, 13,14 seconds average sliding time (top to bottom), around 300 small LED lights and graffiti artworks throughout.

These phenomenal ships were manufactured by STX Europe (shipyard Turku Finland / Oasis-class) and in by STX France (shipyard Saint-Nazaire France / Oasis-Plus). The new Oasis ships are 2,15 m (7 ft) longer.

Biggest Carnival cruise ship - "Carnival Pinnacle" class

The project was designed by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri as their biggest ever passenger ship - GT tonnage 200,000 tons, capacity 6000 passengers, length 380 m (1246 ft), The "Pinnacle Project" was initiated by Carnival Corporation in 2004 to tip the scales in the "Carnival vs Royal Caribbean" competition.

Carnival Pinnacle was never built as the project was officially canceled (mainly due to the vessel's incredible cost at that time). However, many of the project's elements and innovative design features were later adapted for other large-sized cruise liners built for rival companies.

The Icon will be joined by two more ships in the coming years – one in 2025, Star of the Seas, and another in 2026.

On Wednesday, the cruise line is marking the occasion with a party at the Perez Art Museum to give their employees on the shore a chance to see the brand-new ship up close.

“We are celebrating more than a new ship; it’s also the celebration of the culmination of more than 50 years of innovation and dreaming at Royal Caribbean to create the ultimate vacation experience,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group.

For the adventure-seekers, Thrill Island will feature Category 6, the world’s largest waterpark at sea.

This neighborhood will also have a ropes course and thrill ride, a FlowRider wave simulator and a mini golf course.

The ship's Chill Island has four of the seven pools and an adults-only area.

The company added that the Icon of the Seas is also the cruise line’s first ship that can be powered by liquefied natural gas, a transitional fuel.

The dual-fuel engines will work alongside a lineup of energy efficiency initiatives and industry-leading environmental programs on board, like the first waste-to-energy plant at sea.

The biggest Celebrity cruise ships are, as you might expect, the Celebrity ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars, showrooms and decktop pool zones. They also have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Celebrity cruise fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 3,000 passengers or more, the biggest Celebrity ships are like floating versions of the big resorts you find on land in places like Orlando or Las Vegas, although they're not quite as large as the very biggest resorts on land or sea (for the latter, you'd probably want to try a Royal Caribbean or MSC Cruises vessel). Celebrity also operates three even smaller vessels — much smaller; they carry just 16 to 100 people — in the Galapagos year-round. These three vessels make up what is essentially an entirely different business for Celebrity from the mainstream, big-ship cruising that is at the core of the company.

Celebrity is essentially two cruise lines in one: a big-ship brand with 13 vessels that carry 2,000 to 3,000 passengers and sail around the world, and a Galapagos cruisetour operator with three very tiny vessels. We include all of the vessels in this guide.

Note that Celebrity recently announced that its two smallest Galapagos vessels would leave its fleet in 2025 .

To make sure you end up on the right Celebrity ship for you, it pays to study which Celebrity cruise ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking.

What is the biggest Celebrity Cruises ship?

The biggest Celebrity cruise ships are Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Beyond, which are tied for the honor. They both measure 141,420 gross tons. The two vessels also are the newest Celebrity cruise ships. They debuted in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

What is the smallest Celebrity Cruises ship?

The smallest Celebrity cruise ship is the super-tiny Celebrity Xploration. Based in the Galapagos, it measures 320 tons, just a tiny fraction of the size of Celebrity Beyond, and it holds just 16 passengers.

Or, to put it another way, Celebrity Xploration holds fewer passengers than a lifeboat on Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Xploration won't be Celebrity's smallest ship for long, though. Celebrity plans to phase the vessel as well as the 48-passenger Celebrity Xpedition out of its fleet in 2025. That'll make the 100-passenger Celebrity Flora the smallest Celebrity Cruises ship.

Are bigger Celebrity Cruises ships coming?

Not right now. Celebrity Cruises currently has just one cruise ship on order. But the vessel is projected to be roughly the same size as the recently unveiled Celebrity Ascent — about 141,000 tons.

That size estimate can change, of course, as construction on the ship draws closer to completion. Celebrity might add elements to the ship that increase its size.

To be called Celebrity Xcel, the new ship on on order is due to debut in November 2025.

Celebrity Xcel will be the fifth ship in Celebrity's Edge Class series of vessels that began debuting in 2018. The first four ships in the series are Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent.

The Edge Class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Celebrity Cruises ships?

The biggest Celebrity cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Celebrity ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Celebrity's two biggest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent, for instance, you'll find expanded "resort-within-a-resort" areas for suite passengers called The Retreat that aren't on the smaller vessels in the same Edge Class series or on other smaller ships in the Celebrity fleet. The suite areas offer a new two-story sun deck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that are open exclusively to passengers staying in suites.

Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent also have 179 more cabins than their smaller sister vessels in the Edge Class series, which each have 1,467 cabins. As a result, they hold 3,260 passengers at double occupancy. That's up from a 2,910-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Apex and a 2,908-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Edge.

Celebrity's smaller Millennium Class ships, by contrast, only carry about 2,100 passengers at double occupancy. As a result, they have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships.

That makes the latter vessels a good choice for someone who wants to try Celebrity but isn't eager to travel with big crowds. The smaller ships in the Celebrity fleet thus appeal to a subset of Celebrity fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.
