I have an old iMac (2006) and I'm trying to keep it going. I have other much newer macs that run the current software but I am getting all these warnings that say that Safari, Chrome, Firefox all are not being updated and then I am also having problems opening up web pages because the browsers are too old. My question is, what can I use for a web browser on an older iMac? I can only get to MacOS 10.7.5

Hi, Mikebike125 I have 3 macs. Mac mini with Lion 10.7.5 is newest. My family works with it everyday. You can try Google chrome 49 (not supported but run well) Firefox 48 Opera (last version for Lion). Safari will have problem with tls, you can't open sites like Wikipedia (I'll try resolve this problem on Snow Leopard) More rare browsers: Vivaldi, Roccat, Sleipnir, SeaMonkey, Avira Scout...Some chromium forks (Citrio, Epic) And special: Arcticfox, Newmoon, Basilisk, Firefox Legacy (for Lion). There are work and updated regularly

These custom / tweaked Waterfox Classic builds by slapyourhoe are working quite well on Lion and Mavericks. I tried to stomach using a new Windows 10 system and after 30 minutes, I just can't do it because of its intrusiveness. It's either Mavericks or Windows 7, so praying browsers keep getting updated.

Using Mac Ports for Lion, you can get the latest (July 2020) build of WebKit2 targeting GTK, and through that a couple of GTK-based browsers are available, including GNOME Web (aka Epiphany) and Midori. I am still in the process of resurrecting Lion on an old iMac to test them out (its default operating system is currently Linux where all the current major players are fully supported), so I cannot (yet) personally speak to their usability. Depending on your local system's configuration, and the availability of prebuilt packages, these options might take quite some time to compile on your local machine. And they will tend to have the look and feel of a GTK application rather than going out of their way to feel like a typical Aqua application.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari for mac 10.8.5

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. The Advantages Of Using A Mac OS X Mountain Lion Machine

OS X Mountain Lion

OS X Mountain Lion is probably the most anticipated release of Yosemite, Apple's operating system for Mac computers, since the company's earlier release Leopard. This new version, however, introduces new features and enhanced capabilities that have been improved over previous versions. For example, it brings a new Safari browser to the Mac OS, which can be used to search the web, browse and locate information on the web. It also features a completely new way to browse the internet, through the use of a simplified and quick-to-use "Safari" window. Moreover, with OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has enhanced the security of its Mac operating system by introducing stronger protection against malware, including the Gatekeeper application. Furthermore, this release includes new and exciting new features such as the ability to control access to your Mac from a specific IP address, a built-in Flash reader and improved integration with Corel and Quicktime.

In addition to this major upgrade, Apple has released an update to the Mac OS X Mountain Lion, which will be available for the first time since the initial launch. The update, version 3.2, provides numerous new features such as support for the latest graphics and video cards, and fixes bugs that may have affected the operating system's security. It also features a brand new feature known as LiveArea, which offer users access to their favorite websites, as well as access to their email inboxes. Although the upgrade might be the latest in operating systems, it is not considered a revolutionary product, despite introducing some features that are unprecedented. For example, with the current version, users can perform background checks on employees, manage multiple email accounts, and install different programs as needed.

Although Apple has released several major operating systems, such as Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS X Mountain Lion, they retain a loyal customer base and a reputation for providing quality products that stand the test of time. Mac owners and users will have great confidence in finding an OS X Mountain Lion compatible laptop or desktop. This is because the operating system is so stable and efficient. Although users might find the majority of the new features available annoying, they will quickly grow accustomed to the new design and user interface and leave the new features for the time being. However, those that are not so accustomed to new operating systems might want to hold off on upgrading to Mountain Lion until they are familiar with the new design, which could take several months.

Google considered blocking safari users from accessing its new ai features, report says.

Avatar for Chance Miller

Google’s dominance of the search industry is the target of an ongoing Justice Department investigation – and its relationship with Apple is a key component of that case. A new report from The Information today focuses on how Google is racing to reduce its reliance on Apple’s Safari browser ahead of the potential outcome of the antitrust case.

One aspect of the Justice Department’s case against Google is the company’s deal with Apple to be the default search engine on the iPhone. Google pays Apple upwards of $20 billion per year to retain that default status, something the Justice Department says hinders competition in the search engine industry. Notably, Apple is not named as a party in the lawsuit, but the case has led to testimonies from Apple executives such as Eddy Cue .

Today’s report explains that Google wants to increase the share of searches from iPhone users outside of Safari itself:

For several years, Google has been trying to protect itself against that possibility by trying to persuade iPhone owners to switch to either the Google or Chrome apps for their searches. While Google has made headway—lifting the percentage of searches done that way to the low 30s from 25% five years ago—that progress stalled in the second half of last year. And the low 30s percentage is well below Google’s target of raising the number of iPhone searches done through its own apps to 50% by 2030, according to three people who have worked on the effort.

The billions of dollars that Google pays Apple every year comes in the form of a revenue-sharing agreement, where Apple gets a cut of advertising revenue from Google searches performed in Safari. By pushing users toward the Chrome and Google apps, Google pays Apple less money and makes it less vulnerable to regulation.

Convincing users to use its own apps instead of Safari, however, has been a challenge for Google. “It’s simply too hard to overcome the fact that Safari is preinstalled on Apple devices,” sources told The Information .

The report also details that Google hired former Instagram and Yahoo executive Robby Stein to oversee the push away from Safari. As part of this, Google executives reportedly considered limiting its AI Overviews feature to its own apps. This would mean Safari users wouldn’t see AI Overviews in search results, but people using Google’s own apps would. Google, however, “ultimately decided against that move,” the report says.

Earlier this year, Google hired Robby Stein, a former product executive at Instagram and Yahoo, who will take on the goal of shifting iPhone customers to Google’s mobile apps, according to current and former employees. Among his efforts is exploring how Google can use generative AI to make its apps more compelling, one of the people said. Google executives considered having its new AI Overviews feature, which shows AI-generated responses to search queries, appear on its mobile apps but not on Safari, people who have worked on the product said. But Google ultimately decided against that move.

The report makes it clear that Google has been trying to ween itself off Safari for years, with little success. Whether or not the results change remains to be seen, but the true elephant in the room is the US Justice Department’s antitrust, where a ruling is expected “sometime in the next few months.”

Ripple effect from DoJ's Google antitrust lawsuit could burn Apple

A pple and Google have a lucrative deal to keep Google as the default search engine of Safari's web browser. However, this agreement might have to end as the Justice Department is holding an antitrust trial focused on the Mountain View company.

Previous reports revealed that Google pays Apple up to $20 billion a year to be the default iPhone search engine . So even though Apple is not on trial, if the DoJ states that Google is illegally maintaining its dominance over the search engine and search advertising markets, this could be bad news for Cupertino.

According to the latest report by The Information , Google is trying to be less reliant on Apple to protect itself from this possible revenue drop. Currently, Google pulls in an estimated $56 billion from Safari ad revenue on the iPhone, which is around a quarter of all its search revenues.

If the judge ruled in favor of the antitrust lawsuit, Google would lose access to approximately 70% of iPhone searches. To prevent this from happening, Google has been working to reduce its reliance on the deal with Apple.

For example, Mountain View encourages iPhone users to switch from Safari to Google and Chrome apps. The publication highlights some of the efforts to make users switch, such as the Lens image search feature and the Discover feed.

Still, it seems Google must wish the judge would not accept the antitrust case, as in five years, Google only managed to increase the percentage of iPhone searches through its own apps from 25% to around 30%.

Depending on the ruling against Google, this could also affect how Apple's default settings and competitive practices are regulated. In the EU, for example, Apple needs to give users the ability to choose between several web browsers to decide which one is going to be their main one before they finish setting up the iPhone.

BGR will keep following up on this case and update you when we learn more.

Google Wants to Move Away from Apple’s Safari, Says Report

safari for mac 10.8.5

Google is looking to decrease its dependence on Apple’s Safari browser for search traffic from iPhones amidst an ongoing U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) probe into the tech giant’s dominance in the search engine industry — reports The Information (via  9to5Mac ).

One part of the case against Google focuses on its revenue-sharing deal with Apple to be the default search engine on iPhones. Google pays Apple over $20 billion annually for this privilege, which the DOJ argues limits competition in search engines .

Under their agreement, Google pays Apple a cut of advertising revenue from Google searches made through Safari. While Apple itself isn’t part of the lawsuit, company executives like Eddy Cue have been called on to testify . The Justice Department’s antitrust ruling could threaten this deal.

“For several years, Google has been trying to protect itself against that possibility by trying to persuade iPhone owners to switch to either the Google or Chrome apps for their searches,”  The Information  said in its report. “While Google has made headway—lifting the percentage of searches done that way to the low 30s from 25% five years ago—that progress stalled in the second half of last year.”

Diverting search traffic from Safari to its own apps would not only allow Google to pay Apple less money but also help stave off antitrust concerns and threats of regulation. However, getting users to switch from using Safari to Google and Chrome is a taller task than the company anticipated. “It’s simply too hard to overcome the fact that Safari is preinstalled on Apple devices,” sources told The Information .

What’s more, Google’s slow progress in these efforts casts doubt over the feasibility of the company’s plans to increase the number of iPhone searches made through its own apps to 50% by 2030, which insiders who have worked on the project told The Information  about.

Earlier this year, Google hired former Instagram and Yahoo executive Robby Stein to spearhead its campaign to incentivize iOS users to initiate searches through Google apps. To that end, the search giant even considered withholding its AI Overviews feature from Safari. AI Overviews provide users with AI-generated responses to search queries.

The decision would have made it so AI Overviews weren’t available in search results on Safari, but users performing searches through Google and Chrome would have been able to see them. However, Google ultimately scrapped these plans.

As Google struggles to wrangle iOS search share away from Safari, it remains to be seen how the DOJ probe will affect its deal with Apple. According to today’s report, a decision in the antitrust case is expected “sometime in the next few months.”
