Put simply, a cruise travel agent books cruises. As a cruise travel agent, you earn money by recommending and booking cruises for your clientele.

But you’re not limited to booking only cruises. The role of a cruise travel agent is really no different than the role of a travel advisor. As a travel advisor, you can book cruises, and you can also book hotels, tours and other travel experiences. (See more our guide on different types of bookings you can make as a travel advisor .) Consider cruises another offering in your travel advisor toolbox — and another way to earn more income.

What attributes make a good cruise travel agent?

becoming a cruise travel agent

Fora Advisor Brit Healey

A good travel advisor possesses a unique blend of skills and qualities that enable them to provide exceptional service to their clients. Some of these attributes include:

A passion for travel

As a cruise-focused travel advisor, you’ll want to have a deep understanding of different cruise lines and travel trends so that you can make recommendations for your clients. Knowing the difference between river-bound voyages, expedition cruises, luxury cruises and mass-market options, for instance, as well as whom these outlets cater to, will be crucial.

If you already have a passion for travel (including personally going on a cruise experience yourself), then you’re well on your way. You can use your opinions from cruise travel experiences to form the foundation of cruise recommendations for clients.

Continuous learning and staying updated with travel trends and industry developments are imperative. At Fora, we offer general travel agent training as well as a dedicated cruise curriculum that will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully market and book multiple cruise lines. Through Fora, you’ll be able to earn a cruise badge to showcase to your clients that you’ve completed intensive cruise training.

Entrepreneurial spirit

Being a successful cruise travel advisor means you’ll put in a lot of hard work. Especially as you are getting started, there is a learning curve, and it takes time to build your book of business. But it is a rewarding career in many ways, and your efforts will pay off as a small business owner.

Passionate people person

Working as a cruise travel agent is a great career option to connect with people.

You’ll want to get to know your client and their travel style, helping them to make informed decisions on which cruise line to choose and which itinerary they’ll enjoy the most. You’ll also help out with other travel decisions (for example, booking a hotel in the port city before they depart). You’ll need a strong focus on providing excellent customer service, including being responsive, patient and empathetic to clients' concerns and desires.

It’s also an opportunity to network within the travel industry. You’ll develop deep relationships with representatives from different cruise lines. We always say that travel people are the best people, and it's certainly a fun industry to be in.

Attention to detail

It goes without saying, but cruise travel agents are good planners. You’re the go-to person for travel tips, and you love match-making a client’s preferences to a detailed travel plan so that their vacation goes off without a hitch.

What are the steps to becoming a cruise travel agent?

becoming a cruise travel agent

Working as a cruise travel agent is a great opportunity to transform your passion for travel into a fun and fulfilling career. It’s relatively straightforward to get started, and we’ve broken down the process into three main steps.

1. Find a host agency

The first thing you’ll likely want to do as you embark on your new career as a cruise travel agent is to find a host travel agency. A host agency is a business within the travel industry that provides support and resources to independent travel agents or small travel agencies. These services can include access to booking systems , travel partnerships , training , marketing tools , and sometimes even travel agent certification .

Fora is a host agency, and a one-stop shop for everything you need to set your business up as a cruise travel agent. When you join, you’ll be welcomed into a warm community (including a network of passionate cruisers). And we will set you up with all of the tech, tools and training you need to get started as a cruise travel agent, including an in-depth cruise curriculum helmed by seasoned cruise experts within our community.

2. Get certified with travel agent training

Once you join a host agency, you’ll want to get started with a training program. A solid training program helps you learn the ins and outs of booking cruises, as well as other useful topics like marketing (for example, how to utilize social media to build your business).

Fora’s cruise training is live and asynchronous, so you can learn at your own pace. We have a training curriculum designed specifically for cruises. Through the training, you can earn Fora’s Cruise Badge as a distinction to highlight prior knowledge, skills, personal experience, and professional sales indicative of a trusted cruise-focused travel advisor. Earning your Cruise Badge will position you better than ever to meet your clients’ needs and demonstrate through action that you have honed your expertise for all things cruise. From understanding the basics of vessels to complex commission structures, we cover the need-to-know information advisors should keep in mind when booking cruises.

For broader training, we also offer webinars as well as opportunities to connect in person (including an annual conference ). These are not your traditional seminars; they are opportunities to connect directly and network with leading industry experts. You can get accredited as a travel agent through our travel agent certification program . And our training is not a “one and done” program. We offer advanced certification, as well as ongoing opportunities to stay in-the-know with the latest industry trends.

3. Book cruises (and repeat)

Once you’ve learned the ropes on booking from a training program, you’re ready to dive in (no pun intended) to booking cruises.

We believe in learning by doing. To that end, the best way to learn how to become a cruise travel agent is to jump in. In fact, in order to earn your Cruise Badge at Fora, our cruise travel agents need to book at least three cruises across at least two different lines.

As a cruise travel agent, you can choose a niche if you have a specific expertise, or focus on a broad range of offerings. (And remember, as a travel advisor, you can book more than just cruises if you’d like.)

At Fora, we have partnerships with tried-and-true favorites like Royal Caribbean , as well as up-and-comers like Virgin Voyages . If you’re passionate about more eco-friendly cruises, you’ll be pleased to know that we also work closely with brands like HX/Hurtigruten as well as Lindblad Expeditions. For the luxury cruisers, we’re a Four Seasons Preferred partner, and we’re eagerly awaiting the soon-to-come launch of their yachts. This is just a sampling of our 5,500+ partners worldwide!

Once you have made your first booking, we're willing to bet you'll find that it's a little addicting. Start building your book of business by continuing to book cruises, and you're well on your way to a successful career as a travel agent.

Now you know how to become a cruise travel agent. It's time to set sail...

becoming a cruise travel agent

As you’re researching a career as a cruise travel agent, it might feel daunting (there is a lot of information to take in, after all)... But, the easiest way to get started is to dive in. Remember: the more you learn — and the more you book — the easier these water-bound bookings become.

At Fora, we’ll be with you every step of the way. From training to community , tech and more, we’ll set you up with everything you need to succeed. When you’re ready to get started, become a Fora Advisor to earn your Cruise Badge and build your dream job in cruise travel.

Have more questions about becoming a cruise travel agent? We’ve outlined some frequently asked questions and what you’ll need to know.

becoming a cruise travel agent

What qualifications are needed to become a cruise travel agent? What degree do you need to become a cruise agent?

Technically speaking, you do not need a degree or certification to become a cruise travel agent. It’s worth noting that many cruise travel agents opt to become certified through Cruise Lines International Association ( CLIA ); however, this step is not technically necessary. However, we highly recommend investing time into a training program to set yourself up for success.

With Fora, you can earn your Cruise Badge to showcase to your clients that you’ve participated in a comprehensive training program focused on cruises. Benefits of obtaining your Fora Cruise Badge include: public recognition of an advisor’s knowledge and expertise booking cruises, marketing assets, priority consideration for cruise industry events, FAMs and programming through Fora.

Our cruise travel agent training is flexible and you can do it remotely (and at your own pace) via webinars. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about building a successful business as a cruise travel agent, including the cruise booking process, how cruise fares work, navigating onboard dining, group bookings, embarkation and disembarkation, shore excursions, cruise match-making best practices, cruise commission and more.

Over time, your years of experience and hard work as an advisor will pay off in helping to establish yourself as a reputable cruise travel agent.

How much do cruise travel agents make on a cruise?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution on how much cruise travel agents make on a cruise because each cruise line is unique. However, we’ve broken down some of the basics so you can get a deeper sense of the payment structure for a cruise travel agent’s career.

Cruise travel agents earn money based on commissions.

When travel agents book a cruise vacation, the cruise line pays a commission — a percentage of the cost of the cruise vacation booked. And remember, this commission-based model is ideal for your clients, since they won't have to pay extra to enlist your expert services. Everybody wins!

The commission rate varies across the travel industry and between cruise lines (every brand is unique), but typically is anywhere between 15–25 percent. Your commission is split between you and the host agency. It's best to check with the cruise line directly to discover what their commission split looks like (or, at Fora, we showcase this information in an easy-to-view overview in your Fora Advisor Portal).

A career as a cruise travel agent is flexible, and the more you book, the more you earn.

You can work part-time or full-time. When you work with a host agency, you are an independent contractor, and this flexibility allows you to build a career on your own terms. You can be a home-based travel agent (learn more about how to become an independent travel agent ).

With a commission-based model, the more you book, the more you earn. You'll collect a larger chunk of commission if you book, say, a luxury travel, multi-family cruise vacation than you would for a couple's weekend anniversary trip. (Disney cruises are popular for families. Read more about how to become a Disney travel agent .)

Most cruise travel agents are paid by their host agency.

Remember, you’ll likely want a host agency to make the payment process easier. Host agencies have an IATA number (a unique identifier issued by the International Air Transport Association), which allows them to collect and make payments on commissions. At Fora, we handle all of the commission tracking and payments so you can focus more on the fun part (booking cruises, that is).

Want to learn more? See our guide on how travel agents get paid .

What types of cruises can agents book?

The short answer is that the sky is the limit! Most cruise lines work off a commission-based model that is travel agent-friendly. All major lines like Carnival Cruises, Disney, Viking, Norwegian, Celebrity, MSC, Virgin Voyages and more are commissionable. There are also luxury travel lines like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Crystal. Even smaller cruise companies like Ponant and Cunard work with travel agents.

You’ll be able to book a variety of cruise ships, and there’s a ton of opportunities to plan dream vacations for your clients. Whether you’re planning a cruise vacation out of Florida or Europe, there’s plenty of opportunity. Fora’s cruise training program covers all of the numerous available cruise options, and how to match-make each to certain clients, in greater depth.

How does a cruise travel agent book a cruise vacation?

The process for booking a cruise for a client as a travel agent is not too far off from booking a cruise as a traveler yourself. So if you’ve ever booked a cruise for yourself, you’ll be able to learn how to book a cruise for your clientele once you become a travel agent.

When learning how to become a travel agent , you'll learn the specifics of how to book for clients. Every cruise line is a little different... On many cruise websites, you might notice that there’s a designated tab or link labeled "Travel Professionals," "Travel Agent Portal" or something similar. These are the sections that will allow you to register client information as well as your host agency’s IATA number. Coming soon, Fora Advisors will be able to book directly via our integrated booking platform . Additionally, we cover all the details and intricacies of cruise bookings (including more complicated group and event bookings) in our cruise travel agent training.

It’s worth noting that building relationships goes a long way. By simply asking for extra perks (like onboard credit), you can often level up your client’s vacation at no extra cost, helping to build loyalty with your clientele by giving them the best possible travel experience.

Can a cruise travel agent book more than just cruises?

Yes, absolutely! As a travel agent, you can book everything from weekend staycations to bucket-list trips with in-depth itineraries and travel experiences. Learn more in our article about different types of bookings you can make as a travel advisor .

Cruising is a popular way for people to vacation. Those who choose to cruise enjoy having an all-inclusive vacation, where their accommodations, food and entertainment are all paid for ahead of time. There are many different destinations and ships to choose from. The job of a cruise agent is to help customers choose the cruise that is right for them. Cruise agents sell cruise packages and make recommendations to customers who are not sure what they want. Become an agent for cruises by learning everything you can about cruise ships and destinations, practicing your sales techniques, and selling vacations.

Step 1 Evaluate your passion for cruising.

  • Go on a few cruises yourself. If you want to help people book their own cruises, you should have some experience on board different cruise lines and at different ports of call.

Step 2 Get to know cruise destinations and different excursions and opportunities offered by the major cruise lines.

  • Study itineraries, cruise ship amenities and on board entertainment. Look at cruises offered by all the major cruise lines such as Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Step 3 Gain sales experience.

  • Work in a retail shop, sell cosmetics from your home or try telemarketing and phone sales. Learning how to talk about different products and services towards the goal of getting customers to buy them will help you develop the sales skills you need to sell cruises.

Step 4 Demonstrate great customer service skills.

  • Check out websites advertising for cruise agents. Several travel agencies are looking for agents online who can work from home to sell cruises. CruiseMagic.com and others will train you on how to sell cruises, and then allow you to build your own business doing so.

Step 7 Become a certified cruise agent.

  • Take the required online classes, seminars and exams to complete the credits you need for certification.
  • Apply for 1 of the 4 levels of certification offered through CLIA.

Step 8 Use your certification and training to get a job with a travel agency, cruise line, or to work for yourself as an agent.

  • Work for a cruise line in one of their call centers, or as a sales manager. Instead of generating your own leads as a cruise agent, you will take calls and inquiries from customers and help them book their cruises with the specific cruise line you support.

Step 9 Expect to work on commission.

cruise-travel-agent-skills

Although there are no formal requirements to work as a cruise travel agent, it is a rather complex product to market, so you will need some basic training. Additionally, having a few soft skills will help you run a profitable cruise travel service.

1. Excellent verbal communication skills

To work effectively with holiday providers and your customers, you must have excellent communication skills. People will feel more at ease if you communicate clearly and have the ability to firmly explain things.

Being enthusiastic about cruising is crucial because your customer needs to know that partnering with you will result in the finest cruise experience.

2. Active listening skills

Being able to actively listen is essential for developing trusting relationships with your clients. To build a relationship with them, pay attention to what they are looking for on a cruise, offer advice when requested, and keep the conversation going.

3. The ability to sell products and services

Cruise lines provide a variety of chances to sign up for online training, ship tours, webinars, and educational cruises because they want you to be familiar with their ships inside and out. FAMs, or familiarization trips, give you the chance to thoroughly experience the cruise and take advantage of all that the ship has to offer—often at no cost or at a significant discount.

4. Attention to detail

Regardless of how minor a task may be, it is imperative that you complete it carefully and accurately. Make sure, for instance, that the clients’ names, passport numbers, and departure dates are accurate. Examine the travel arrangements of your clients and keep an eye out for any potential improvements, such better aircraft connections. Double-check the fine print to ensure your clients receive precisely what they paid for because errors might have severe consequences for everyone.

5. Passion for cruise travel

6 . Get to know your customers well

It’s crucial to get to know your clients on a personal level if you want to create loyalty. The bulk of repeat travelers are cruise enthusiasts, and if they have a relationship with an agency, they’ll book cruise after cruise.

7. Get to know the service you’re selling

Make reservations for yourself on cruises with several lines, if you haven’t already. This will enable you to cruise from the viewpoint of your clients. Try a variety of styles, including river and ocean cruises, as well as trips on big liners and little sailing boats. Explore the reasons why people like cruising by using the amenities onboard, going on an excursion, and more.

8. Embark on Your Journey & Set Sail for Success!

From joining a reputable host agency to building personal relationships with cruise line brands, we will cover this exciting profession's essential aspects. So, let's dive in!

Join a host agency with strong relationships with cruise lines.

becoming a cruise travel agent

When starting your journey as a cruise travel agent, aligning yourself with a host agency that has established connections with major cruise lines is crucial. One such agency is LuxRally Travel, which boasts strong relationships with renowned cruise lines like Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Ponant, and Luxury Yacht Brokers. By affiliating yourself with a host agency like LuxRally Travel, you can access exclusive perks and benefits that enhance your clients' experiences.

Learn About the Cruising Industry

becoming a cruise travel agent

To excel as a cruise travel agent, you must familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the cruising industry. Cruise ships are more than just vessels; they are floating cities offering a wide range of experiences for passengers. From cozy interior rooms to lavish penthouses with dedicated butlers, each cruise line offers a unique experience. Additionally, learning about popular destinations like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay, a thrilling water park located on a private island in the Bahamas, will help you guide your clients towards their dream vacations.

Utilize Tools and Training from Cruise Lines

becoming a cruise travel agent

Cruise lines understand the importance of travel agents and provide extensive support to ensure their success. Many cruise lines offer valuable resources, including event assistance, promotional materials, and libraries filled with images, videos, and branded content. For example, Virgin Voyages offers supplementary training through its First Mate program, allowing you to become an expert on their brand. Additionally, cruise lines often provide exclusive promotions and benefits to agents, giving you a competitive edge when attracting clients.

Stay Up to Date on Trends

becoming a cruise travel agent

The cruising industry constantly evolves, with new ships, amenities, and itineraries being introduced regularly. To stay ahead of the game, it is essential to update yourself on these trends continually. For instance, Celebrity Cruises recently launched an expedition ship in the Galapagos, The Flora, with 50 luxurious suites, providing a unique experience for their passengers. Moreover, Celebrity Cruises earned the prestigious Forbes Five Star rating for many ships in their fleet, making them the only cruise line in the world to achieve this recognition. By staying informed about such details, you can offer your clients the latest and most exciting options available.

Build Personal Relationships with Cruise Line Brands

becoming a cruise travel agent

To truly excel as a cruise travel agent, it is vital to establish personal relationships with the sales managers or directors of cruise line brands in your region. Having direct access to these individuals can make a significant difference when negotiating special requests for your clients or securing exclusive perks. Whether it's arranging a surprise for a client's birthday or fulfilling specific dietary preferences throughout their cruise, leveraging your relationships with cruise lines will add value to your clients' experiences.

Always Ask for a Plug from Your Clients

becoming a cruise travel agent

Word of mouth is a powerful tool in the travel industry. After your clients return from their incredible cruise experiences, tastefully ask them to tag you in their trip recap posts. 2. Active Listening: When clients express their concerns or issues, actively listen to understand their perspective and empathize with their emotions. Allowing them to express themselves will help you gain a better understanding of the problem and show your commitment to resolving it.

3. Prompt and Clear Communication: Maintain open and prompt communication with your clients during challenging situations. Keep them informed of any updates, alternative options, or actions being taken to address their concerns. Clear and transparent communication helps to alleviate anxiety and build trust.

4. Assess the Situation: Take the time to evaluate the situation thoroughly. Understand the root cause of the problem, whether it is a miscommunication, an operational issue, or a third-party complication. This assessment will help you determine the appropriate course of action to resolve the challenge.

5. Collaborate with Cruise Line Representatives: Work closely with representatives from the cruise line to address and find solutions for your clients’ challenges. Cruise lines have procedures in place to handle various situations, and their expertise can be invaluable in resolving issues effectively.

6. Offer Alternative Options: When faced with challenges such as itinerary changes or service disruptions, provide alternative options to accommodate your clients’ needs. This could include rescheduling shore excursions, adjusting cabin assignments, or offering onboard credits to compensate for any inconveniences.

7. Provide Timely Solutions: Act swiftly to address the challenges your clients are facing. Time-sensitive issues require immediate attention and resolution. Keeping your clients informed of the progress and steps being taken reassures them that you are actively working towards a solution.

8. Document and Follow Up: Maintain a record of all communication and actions taken to resolve the challenges. This documentation is essential for future reference and may be required to follow up with the cruise lines or other stakeholders involved. After the situation is resolved, follow up with your clients to ensure their satisfaction and provide any additional assistance they may need.

9. Maintain a Positive Attitude: Adopt a positive and solution-oriented mindset. Displaying a positive attitude and demonstrating your commitment to finding a resolution instills confidence in your clients. Assure them that you will do everything possible to resolve the challenges they are facing.

10. Learn from the Experience: Take each challenging situation as an opportunity to learn and improve. Reflect on what might have contributed to the challenge and identify ways to prevent similar issues in the future. Constantly strive to enhance your problem-solving skills and customer service approach based on the lessons learned.

Handling challenges and difficult situations calmly and professionally not only resolves issues for your clients but also strengthens their trust in your abilities as a cruise travel agent. By responding effectively to challenges, you can turn potentially negative situations into positive experiences and build long-lasting client relationships based on your ability to navigate and resolve any issues that arise.

Viewfromship

Many travel agents choose to specialize in cruising because they are passionate about the cruise industry and know that over 70% of cruisers book their sailing with a travel agent. Even if you’re an experienced cruiser, there can still be a lot to learn about selling cruises as a travel agent. Below we take a look at the steps you can take to develop your knowledge and skills as a cruise specialist .

1. Master the Basics

Lifesaver

The first step to becoming a cruise specialist mastering the basics of cruising. Study up on the lingo of cruising, so that you can make sure you understand the terms you are reading or hearing. Practice reading deck plans for different ships and research popular ports of call, especially if you are in a drive market to any of these ports.

It’s also important to learn about popular cruise lines. Start by researching the lines that you want to sell and that you think your clients are interested in. Knowing what sets these brands and products apart from one another will ultimately help you sell that line.

2. Explore Cruise Line Education

Cruise lines also provide educational resources to learn about their individual brands and ships. For example, Carnival Cruise Line’s Loyalty Rocks: Learn and Earn program provides travel agents with education on everything Carnival Cruise Line, and it rewards agents for completing the courses. Carnival Cruise Line is not alone in this type of education. Each cruise line has resources to educate agents.

These courses can help agents to understand the brand and which of their clients the experience would best fit. Focus on a couple of cruise lines to begin deepening your cruising go-to’s and building your ability to answer your clients’ frequently asked questions.

3. Share Your Cruising Knowledge

As you become more familiar with the cruise industry and booking cruises, it’s important to share your cruising knowledge with your community and your clients. For example, if a local school is learning about careers, volunteer to talk about your role as a travel agent and the careers available in the cruising industry, from the engineers who build the ships to the chefs who work onboard. If an environmental group asks you to speak on sustainable travel, share how the cruise industry is using Liquified Natural Gas and increased recycling programs to become greener.

Showing that you have expert knowledge of the industry will encourage people to trust you when it comes to cruising and help build your reputation as a cruise specialist.

4. Use Your CLIA Membership

How to Become a Cruise Travel Agent

Cruise ships docked in The Bahamas.

How does traveling to places like Machu Picchu and Morocco, South Africa , and Singapore sound to you? What about getting paid to do it? If that’s music to your ears, you may want to find out how to become a travel agent .

Lots of people are drawn to the perks that come with the job of travel agent. And, indeed, there are many. As a travel agent, you get endless opportunities to travel around the world. Often, you’re also able to enjoy discounts on everything from accommodation to transportation. If you’re into traveling and committed to helping others explore the world as well, becoming a travel agent might just be the perfect job for you.

It’s the combination of having an adventure life that revolves around travel and the (financial) stability of an office job that makes becoming a travel agent so attractive.

Travel Agent Jobs

So, first of all, what does a travel agent do in return for all those privileges and perks? A travel agent can be an independent individual offering his or her services based on personal experiences, but also someone who works for a larger travel agency. However the business structure is set up, the job requirements are pretty much the same.

Basically, as a travel agent, you provide a service related to the travel and tourism industry. Clients come to you for help planning and booking their vacations. In order to do so, you work closely with a variety of suppliers in the industry. These suppliers include, but aren’t limited to, hotels and other lodgings, car rental companies, airlines, cruise lines, travel insurance providers and businesses offering local activities and tours.

Using your own travel experience, you help your clients arrange their vacation. You are a consultant, always ready to give advice and contact suppliers on your client’s behalf. You may book accommodation, flights and cruises. Sometimes, you’ll be asked to set up an entire vacation. Your job is to take make going on a trip as easy as possible for your client.

It’s because of the close relationships between a travel agent and different suppliers that, as an agent, you often get to enjoy discounts during your own vacation. This is arguably the biggest perk of this particular profession. The better the relationships, the more often you’ll also be able to offer upgrades and better overall service to your clients.

How Do Travel Agents Make Money?

Of course, getting travel discounts is fantastic, but it doesn’t pay the bills in the end. So, how do travel agents earn their income?

There are two different ways you can make money as a travel agent. The first one is adding surcharges and fees to the price your clients pay for your service. If you’re able to get discounts on whatever it is you’re booking for your client, you can add a service fee to the price. This won’t mean that your client will pay more, though. It’ll come out about the same. This extra fee is somewhat of a payment for your time spent putting together the itinerary or trip. Adding surcharges and fees like this is the least-used way to make money, though.

Most travel agents make money from commissions they get paid by airlines, hotels, cruise lines,… This doesn’t really affect the price your client pays. The more holiday-makers you bring to your affiliated suppliers, the more commissions you’ll earn. This is by far the most common way travel agents earn their income. This is also why it’s important to, as a travel agent, have a large network of suppliers. Developing personal relationships with travel and tourism businesses helps not only your clients, but also earns you more money in commissions.

Travel Agent Schools

The most direct, and successful, way to a career as a travel agent is through a travel agent school. You will need a formal education and some certificates to be an official travel agent. You might also need a local business license (but that depends on the country/state you’re in). It’s worth looking into that as well.

There are several schools where you can take travel-and-tourism and travel-agent courses. The first, and probably best, place to look is the American Society Of Travel Agents (ASTA), which provides a wealth of information on how to become a travel agent. They have a comprehensive list of travel agent schools in every U.S. state.

Classes are typically offered in either part-time or full-time programs. They may take place in the evening in order to accommodate people who have day jobs. Many courses are online, which allows you to set your own learning schedule.

The Need For a Niche

The travel industry encompasses a super-wide range of vacations, destinations and activities, from adventurous jungle treks in central Africa to luxurious cruises in the Caribbean. Therefore, it’s critical that you zoom in on a niche in which you become an expert. No one is able to know about everything related to travel, but you can, in fact, become very knowledgeable about one specific area. This niche should be based on your personal interest.

Cruise Travel Agents

Cruises are a great example of a niche you can pick as a travel agent. The demand is always high, there are many companies with which you can develop long-term relationships (and increase your commissions), and it’s specific.

As a cruise travel agent, you’ll be helping your clients by booking their cruises, advising them on great destinations, and suggesting fun activities they can do. You’ll also offer information about and help with applicable visas and other paperwork. Remember that the goal is to make planning a cruise as easy as possible.

Virtual Travel Agents

While many travel agents work from a cubicle at a travel agency, some offer their services online. Although communication will have to happen via email (or sometimes Skype calls), that doesn’t need to be a problem. In fact, eliminating your client’s need to actually come into your brick-and-mortar business can be an extra selling point.

Travel Agent From Home

Many virtual travel agents work from the comfort of their own home. Some might still be affiliated with a host agency while others operate independently and are one-person businesses. Home-based travel agents who work with host agencies often split their commissions with the respective agency.

If you work independently, however, you can keep 100% of the commission. This requires more work, though, as you need to develop relationships with travel industry suppliers yourself. But that hard work clearly pays off in more money.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Role of a Cruise Travel Agent

As a cruise travel agent, your role goes beyond simply booking trips for clients. You will be their trusted advisor, guiding them through the process of choosing the perfect cruise, coordinating travel arrangements, and ensuring a seamless vacation experience. Excellent customer service skills are essential, as you will be responsible for providing personalized recommendations, answering questions, and addressing any concerns that arise before, during, and after the cruise.

Responsibilities and Duties

One of the primary responsibilities of a cruise travel agent is to assist clients in selecting the ideal cruise based on their preferences, budget, and desired destinations. You will need to have a thorough understanding of different cruise lines, itineraries, and onboard amenities to make informed recommendations. Additionally, you will handle all aspects of the booking process, including securing cabins, arranging flights, coordinating transfers, and managing any special requests or accommodations.

The Importance of Product Knowledge

To excel as a cruise travel agent, a deep knowledge of the products and services offered by various cruise lines is crucial. This includes being familiar with different ship types, cabin categories, dining options, onboard activities, and entertainment. Understanding the unique features and selling points of each cruise line will enable you to match clients with the experiences that best suit their preferences and expectations.

Developing Sales and Communication Skills

Effective communication and sales skills are vital for success as a cruise travel agent. You will need to build rapport with clients, actively listen to their needs and desires, and then articulate the value and benefits of specific cruise options. By understanding your clients’ motivations and tailoring your recommendations accordingly, you can increase the likelihood of securing bookings. Additionally, strong negotiation skills can help you secure the best deals and promotions for your clients.

Researching and Choosing a Cruise Line

With numerous cruise lines available, it is essential to research and select the right one to work with. This decision will impact the type of clientele you attract and the level of support you receive as a travel agent. Take the following factors into consideration when making your selection:

Reputation and Safety Record

Begin by researching the reputation and safety record of each cruise line. Look for reviews and testimonials from past passengers, paying close attention to feedback regarding customer service, cleanliness, and safety measures. A cruise line with a solid reputation will not only enhance your credibility as an agent but also provide peace of mind to your clients.

Itineraries and Destinations

Consider the itineraries and destinations offered by each cruise line. Some may specialize in specific regions or types of cruises, such as river cruises or luxury cruises. Assess whether their itineraries align with the interests and preferences of your target clientele. A diverse range of destinations and unique experiences will widen your potential client base.

Target Market

Each cruise line caters to a specific target market, whether it’s families, couples, adventure seekers, or luxury travelers. Determine which demographic aligns with your interests and expertise as a travel agent. This will help you develop a niche and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly.

Commission Rates and Incentives

Consider the commission rates and incentives offered by each cruise line. Some may provide higher commission rates or additional perks for booking their cruises. While commission should not be the sole factor in your decision, it is important to ensure that your efforts are adequately rewarded.

Gaining Relevant Education and Training

While formal education is not a requirement to become a cruise travel agent, acquiring relevant education and training can significantly enhance your knowledge, credibility, and marketability. Consider the following options:

Online Courses and Certifications

There are numerous online courses and certifications specifically designed for aspiring travel agents. These programs cover topics such as cruise line operations, sales techniques, customer service, and industry regulations. Completing these courses will equip you with a solid foundation of knowledge and demonstrate your commitment to professional development.

Travel and Tourism Degree Programs

If you desire a more comprehensive education, consider pursuing a degree in travel and tourism. Many universities and colleges offer programs focused on the travel industry, including courses on cruise line management, travel marketing, and hospitality management. A degree can provide you with a broader understanding of the industry and open up additional career opportunities.

Industry Webinars and Seminars

Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and developments by attending webinars and seminars hosted by cruise lines, travel associations, and industry experts. These events often provide valuable insights, product updates, and networking opportunities. Taking advantage of such resources will ensure that you remain knowledgeable and competitive within the industry.

Building a Professional Network

Networking is a crucial aspect of building a successful career as a cruise travel agent. By connecting with industry professionals, attending trade shows, and joining relevant associations, you can expand your network and gain valuable insights and opportunities. Consider the following strategies:

Join Travel Associations and Organizations

Membership in travel associations and organizations can provide you with access to industry resources, educational opportunities, and networking events. Consider joining associations such as the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) or the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). These organizations often offer training programs, conferences, and forums where you can connect with other professionals in the field.

Attend Travel Trade Shows

Travel trade shows are excellent opportunities to meet industry representatives, network with fellow travel agents, and learn about the latest offerings in the cruise industry. Research upcoming trade shows and make plans to attend, ensuring you have ample business cards and marketing materials to distribute. Take advantage of seminars and workshops offered during these events to enhance your knowledge and skills.

Connect with Cruise Line Representatives

Establish relationships with cruise line representatives by attending industry events or reaching out directly. Introduce yourself, express your interest in promoting their cruises, and inquire about any training or familiarization trips they may offer to travel agents. Building strong connections with cruise line representatives can result in exclusive benefits, such as access to special promotions or priority assistance for your clients.

Developing Product Knowledge

As a cruise travel agent, it is essential to stay updated and informed about the latest offerings in the cruise industry. Develop a deep understanding of different cruise lines, ships, itineraries, and onboard experiences to provide valuable recommendations to your clients. Consider the following strategies:

Research Cruise Lines and Ships

Regularly research different cruise lines and their ships to stay informed about their offerings. Visit cruise line websites, read travel magazines, and follow industry blogs and social media accounts to gather information. Familiarize yourself with the unique features, amenities, and target markets of each cruise line, allowing you to match clients with the most suitable options.

Attend Familiarization Trips

Many cruise lines offer familiarization trips, also known as “fam” trips, to travel agents. These trips allow you to experience firsthand the ships, amenities, and destinations offered by the cruise line. Familiarization trips provide invaluable knowledge and personal experiences that can enhance your ability to sell cruises effectively.

Participate in Webinars and Training Sessions

Stay updated with the latest product knowledge by participating in webinars and training sessions offered by cruise lines and industry suppliers. These sessions often cover new ship launches, itinerary updates, and onboard enhancements. Taking advantage of these resources will help you stay ahead of the curve and provide accurate and up-to-date information to your clients.

Enhancing Sales and Marketing Skills

To succeed as a cruise travel agent, you must continually refine your sales and marketing skills. Effective communication, understanding customer needs, and utilizing digital marketing tools are all essential components of a successful travel agency. Consider the following strategies:

Improve Communication and Listening Skills

Enhancing your communication skills will allow you to build strong relationships with clients, understand their preferences, and effectively convey the value of different cruise options. Practice active listening, ask targeted questions, and tailor your communication style to each client’s preferences. The ability to effectively communicate will significantly impact your success as a cruise travel agent.

Utilize Digital Marketing Tools

Utilize various digital marketing tools to reach a wider audience and attract potential clients. Develop a professional website that showcases your expertise and provides valuable resources for cruise travelers. Utilize social media platforms to share engaging content, promote special offers, and interact with your target audience. Consider investing in paid online advertising to increase your visibility among potential clients searching for cruise-related information.

Understand Customer Needs and Preferences

To effectively sell cruises, you must understand your customer’s needs, preferences, and motivations. Take the time to buildrapport with your clients, asking open-ended questions to uncover their desired travel experiences. By understanding their interests, budget, and travel goals, you can tailor your recommendations and provide personalized options that resonate with them. Building strong relationships with your clients will not only lead to repeat business but also generate positive word-of-mouth referrals.

Master the Art of Persuasion

As a cruise travel agent, persuasion is a valuable skill. You need to convince potential clients that a cruise vacation is the perfect choice for them and that you are the best person to assist them in planning their trip. Highlight the unique features, benefits, and experiences that cruises offer, such as the variety of onboard activities, gourmet dining options, and the opportunity to explore multiple destinations in one trip. Showcase your expertise and passion for cruises to instill confidence in potential clients.

Securing a Job as a Cruise Travel Agent

Once you have acquired the necessary qualifications and developed your skills, it’s time to secure a job as a cruise travel agent. Consider the following strategies:

Search Online Job Portals

Online job portals are a great resource for finding cruise travel agent positions. Websites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor often list job opportunities in the travel industry. Use relevant keywords like “cruise travel agent” or “travel consultant” to narrow down your search. Read job descriptions carefully, paying attention to specific requirements and qualifications.

Visit Cruise Line Career Websites

Many cruise lines have dedicated career websites where they advertise job openings for travel agents. Visit these websites and explore the available positions. Some cruise lines may even have recruitment events or job fairs where you can meet with their representatives and learn more about the company and available opportunities.

Contact Travel Recruitment Agencies

Travel recruitment agencies specialize in connecting travel professionals with suitable job opportunities. Submit your resume and cover letter to reputable agencies that work with cruise lines. These agencies often have established relationships with cruise companies and can help match you with the right position based on your skills and preferences.

Navigating the Application Process

Once you have identified job opportunities, it’s essential to navigate the application process effectively to increase your chances of being selected. Consider the following tips:

Prepare a Compelling Resume

Your resume should highlight your relevant experience, qualifications, and skills. Tailor it to the specific job you are applying for, emphasizing your cruise-related knowledge and expertise. Include any customer service or sales experience, travel industry certifications, and language skills. Use action verbs and quantify your achievements wherever possible to make your resume stand out.

Stay updated with the latest industry trends, attend webinars and seminars, and continue learning. Seek opportunities for professional development, such as obtaining additional certifications or attending advanced training sessions. By staying knowledgeable and up-to-date, you can provide the best possible service to your clients.

Embrace Technology

Technology plays a significant role in the travel industry. Embrace digital tools and platforms that can streamline your day-to-day tasks, enhance your marketing efforts, and improve client interactions. Utilize customer relationship management (CRM) systems to manage client information and preferences. Leverage social media platforms and online booking tools to reach a wider audience and simplify the booking process for your clients.

In conclusion, becoming a cruise travel agent requires a combination of education, training, skills, and a genuine passion for travel. By understanding the responsibilities of the role, researching and selecting the right cruise line, gaining relevant education and training, building a professional network, developing product knowledge, and enhancing sales and marketing skills, you can position yourself for success in this exciting industry. With dedication, continuous learning, and a commitment to exceptional customer service, you can embark on a rewarding and fulfilling career as a cruise travel agent, helping others create unforgettable memories at sea.

How To Become a Cruise Line Travel Agent – 3 Simple Steps

Becoming a travel agent these days isn’t like what it use to be. There’s no going to the office, brick and mortar requirement. Most agents work from home and book for clients online or over the phone. This helps bring down the cost of overhead and allows many people to work as an agent in any capacity and on their own time. All of this applies to someone who is looking to become a cruise line travel agent as well.

So what is a cruise line travel agent? This term refers to anyone who specifically books cruises for clients. It’s their main focus. And it’s a fantastic idea and cruises tend to earn travel agents the most commission overall on a booking.

So if you’re wanting to get into the travel industry and more specifically book cruises for your clients, you’re on the right path. We have 3 simple steps to follow to become an actual agent who sells cruises today and earns commission doing so. But first let’s answer some commonly asked questions.

What is a Cruise Agent?

A cruise agent is someone who helps a vacationeer through the booking process of a cruise. This includes choosing the destination, the ship, the dates, any cruise activities, room type and location as well as transportation to and from the cruise terminal.

While it seems like a lot of steps to take, booking a cruise for a client is a fairly simple process and usually takes about 15-20 minutes online to complete. In most cases the client will already know where they want to go, for how long and some of the activities that they want. Typically the cruise agent is in charge of booking the cruise and room and from there can let the client choose and book their own extras, add-ons, and the schedule of each day.

This is commonly done through an online booking engine that looks very similar to a consumer-facing one.

How much do cruise agents make?

Cruise agents typically make 10% or more of the pre-tax price on a cruise. So if a cruise costs $5,000 before taxes, the agent will usually earn $500 on the cruise booking. However, many agents tend to work with host agencies who pay a percentage of that commission and in return host the agent by providing access to the supplier plus on-going support and training. In this case an agent tend to make between 50%-70% of the earned commission.

On a monthly basis, cruise agents usually make somewhere between $2,500 to $5,500. It all depends on how many bookings you complete each month. The average cruise booking pays about $400.

Do travel agents get better cruise pricing?

In a sense, yes; travel agents can get better cruise pricing for clients. Because most agents look for the best deal for their client, this tends to apply not just before a booking occurs but after all, meaning, a travel agent will continue to look for a better deal even after the cruise has been booked. This can include special offers like kids sail free or a room credit for the guests.

Also, many cruise lines give cruise agents the opportunity to help their clients save by offering them on-board credits to share. These credits can be used by the clients once on-board and tend to cover any incidental charges including drink or merchandise purchases. They may even go towards excursion bookings. Either way the client saves money.

For personal bookings done by the cruise agent, they can save up to almost 70% off a cruise. This is typically earned when an agent completes some training and has an industry ID card. Some cruise lines even offer free cruises to agents who reach a certain level of training.

How to Become a Cruise Line Travel Agent

Any person out there who has interest in becoming a cruise line travel agent can. Even if you don’t have any prior experience in the travel industry or with cruises, you can do it. And you can get it done in 3 simple steps:

  • Join a host agency – This will save you a lot of time and money. A good Host Agency provides you with access to the cruise supplier, training and on-going support. They also take care of commissions when it’s time to get paid. We highly recommend Boardwalk Travel Agency as they have only one cost, pay a high % of commission and have fantastic on-going support for their agents.
  • Complete your training – Once you’ve joined an agency you’ll want to register and start your training with each cruise line. We recommend starting out with the major players including Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruise, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line. 90% of your clients are going to want to sail on one of these cruises so it’s best to train and learn to book them.
  • Start booking – Yes, the third step is to start booking clients and earning commission. We’ve seen agents join a program like Boardwalk , train and then book a friend or family members cruise within just a few days!

One thing you’ll want to make sure of is that you have the right equipment to start booking. This means you have access to a computer, internet and a phone. We also suggest you have a quiet place to work from.

A cruise agent who is knowledgeable about the cruise line their client wants to book is a powerful one. Being able to make suggestions like what activities they can do on-board the ship, the best room location, add-ons that are worth the cost and entertainment that must be seen are priceless to the client. So when you do your training be sure to take notes and really learn about each of these things.

A powerful cruise agent is also a valuable agent in several ways. First, their knowledge makes them stand-out from the rest. It’s true that any client has many choices when it comes to choosing a travel agent to work with so you’ll want to make sure that you make a very good impression the first time. Second, providing the very best experience for a client usually means referrals for the agent. When this happens, you’ll find that your business just snowballs into something bigger and bigger.

Cruise Line Host Agency

Choosing the right host agency is one of the most important steps you can take to being successful. A host agency will either make or break you based on how you’re treated and what you’re offered.

A few things you want to make sure of:

  • Low fees – You want to join a host agency who has little upfront and ongoing fees. These are typically charged on a monthly basis and usually come after a buy-in fee of some sort. This buy-in or membership fee can range from $100 to $250 depending on the agency. We recommend Boardwalk Travel as they offer a membership for $99 with no on-going, monthly or yearly fees. It’s just a one-time $99 fee to join.
  • High commission – Some host agencies offer new agents between 50%-65% of all commission earned. This means that if you book a client and the commission is $500, the host agency will pay you $250 of it and keep the rest. This is VERY common when it comes to host agencies as it helps them continue to manage agents and provide on-going support. We like Boardwalk Travel because they start every agent at an industry-high 70%. This means you keep more of what you earn.
  • On-going support – You always want to make sure that your host agency is providing you with on-going support when you need it. So when you have questions, which you will, you can get them answered. A company like Boardwalk Travel offers online chat, email, phone and forum support which is exactly what you want.
  • Space – A good host agency will give you space to work your own business, your own clients and your own marketing. You don’t want an agency who is peering over your shoulder 24/7. Because you’re an independent contractor you should be able to work like one.
  • Quick payouts – Find a host agency who will pay you quickly once travel has taken place. Some host agencies pay net 30 or even net 45 meaning, they don’t pay you until 30-45 days after your client has traveled. Find someone who pay within 7 days or less. Even better, find someone like Boardwalk who will pay within 48 hours or less.
  • Benefits – Host agencies can get you access to agent benefits like discounted cruises. Make sure you choose one who will allow you to do this early on, after making 1-2 bookings. Benefits are a great way for you to learn and experience in person and make you a better seller over-all.

Becoming a cruise line travel agent isn’t as hard these days as it was in the past. This is because most work from home and independently than a brick and mortar store. Cruise agents are able to help save their clients money on cruises by continually searching for the best deals before and after a booking. They can also give out on-board credit when available.

Joining any agency and getting ready to sell can be done in three simple steps. Join, train and start selling. A host agency like Boardwalk Travel can help you achieve this faster than anyone else. They also offer one of the best programs online that includes no on-going fees, agent support, high paying commission rate and online training.

How to Become a Travel Agent—Because, Believe It or Not, the Industry Is on the Rise

By Scott Bay

How to Become a Travel Agent—Because Believe It or Not the Industry Is on the Rise

There’s a reason “how to become a travel agent” has been a continuously trending search phrase on Google—it is a career path that offers a flexible work environment and schedule, ample travel opportunities, and an immersion into a supportive world-wide industry. It's a surprise to some in 2023: Once the internet became widely available, it was largely believed that needing a travel agent was obsolete. However, even though the brick-and-mortar agencies with punny names in strip malls have vanished, the career is on-the-rise .

New software options are making it easier than ever for people to make money planning trips, either as a side hustle or as a full-time business. That’s why Cherikonda, India-based stay-at-home mother, Maya Kapoor-Miller, decided to enter the professional world as a travel agent this year, at 31. “I knew nothing about the travel industry prior to signing up,” says Kapoor-Miller, who decided to use San Francisco-based booking platform Dreamport to establish her online travel advisor business. “It is my first business in life, and the only one that you can start with no investment.”

But there's also a rise in demand. When people ventured back into the world after the pandemic, travel agents saw an overwhelming amount of business . And that momentum hasn’t stopped—when travel is complicated, like it was in 2020 and 2021, travelers turned to professional trip planners to create a seamless vacation. For better or worse, traveling has remained complicated and chaotic, with new rules being implemented (like Americans needing to pay a fee to visit Europe in 2024 ) and airline strikes and staffing issues. Offloading all of the nitty-gritty details to someone else is more appealing than ever.

For those entering the field, there's also the age-old motivator: a love of travel.

Shelton Ellis, who is based in North Carolina, recently saw these opportunities and left behind more than 20 years in public relations and global advertising to turn his passion into a career. “I was born with a wanderlust that would wear Rick Steves out,” Ellis says. “I decided to take the leap and follow that lifelong yearning. Transitioning into this role was really about learning how to monetize what I'm passionate about.”

Whether you are looking for a new career path or a lucrative side-hustle—or simply curious about those taking the plunge—here’s how to become a travel agent, from the qualifications and education required, to anticipated earnings, according to those who have made the shift in the past year.

What exactly does a travel agent do?

Travel agents, or travel advisors (the term is mostly interchangeable), manage everything that goes into a trip for their clients: the flights, car transfers, accommodations, restaurant reservations, and more—they even inspire the itinerary. The reason people turn to travel agents, aside from having a helping hand during any travel chaos , is also to tap into the travel agent’s first-hand knowledge of destinations, and their industry partnerships, which often lead to perks such as hotel upgrades, ideal airplane seats, and experiences that can’t be found on a search engine.

“You have to remember that as a travel agent, you will be a guide for people during their happiest moments—family reunions, weddings , baptisms, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that people have dreamt of,” says Kapoor-Miller. “It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a travel agent. You navigate people, inform them, and help them choose.”

So, how do you become a travel agent?

There are many ways to become a travel agent, from joining an existing travel agency , to starting an independent business from the ground up. Others are opting for one of the buzziest start-ups in the travel industry, Fora . When it launched in 2021, the software company, which trains and provides search engine-optimized profile pages to advisors—at one point had a waitlist of over 30,000 people eager to begin a part-time gig. Travel photographer and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Amanda Villarosa is currently in the process of joining.

“I'm the person that friends and family come to for travel recommendations, tips and tricks, and general travel advice,” says Villarosa. “After discovering Fora and looking into it, I realized that it could be the perfect side-hustle, considering I'm already so involved in the industry.”

With additional flexibility, Villarosa was able to move from New York City to splitting her time between Denver and Los Angeles . She says that the sign-up was quite straightforward. “You're given a dedicated Fora email and have access to advising tools and fellow Fora advisors,” she says. “The training is in the form of Zoom meetings and videos, which you have the option to watch at your own pace. Once completed, you take a certification quiz and you're on your way to advising.”

The other ways in are slightly more involved. To begin an independent practice, you go about it like many other businesses. You will have to create an LLC, establish a business name, cultivate marketing materials, build a website, find clientele, and more.

Ellis found something in the middle, choosing to connect with an established travel agency. “Don't be afraid to reach out to an agency looking to take on new advisors and is willing to mentor," says Ellis. "I was fortunate to learn so much from Annie Chambers, the owner of Crafted Escapes , who has seven years in the business.” He now knows the ropes on everything from using itinerary-building software to destination-specific training, to the sales and marketing aspects of the trade.

Is there required education or qualifications?

Ellis says that there's no certification, per se, required to become a travel advisor, but there are countless training courses available like Departure Lounge ’s classes on navigating the industry through hotels and tour operators. He said it’s also important to stay on top of travel trends. Ellis recently completed travel agent training programs provided by premier cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages , Ritz-Carlton Yachts , and Cunard to help agents sell their products more accurately.

How much does a travel agent make?

What a travel agent earns depends on how many trips they successfully book for their clients. The entire model is commission-based, meaning agents earn a percentage of the total cost of the vacation they orchestrate. Many travel advisors choose to charge a flat-rate planning fee in addition to their commission, but balance is key—if you charge a high planning fee, it could lead to potential clients going elsewhere.

Fora ’s website states that “some of our full-time, expert advisors earn well into the six figures (or beyond).” So a lucrative career may be on the horizon, for those who are able to build a robust client base and excellent industry connections.

How much you make can also depend on where you live around the world. “I am being paid in dollars,” says India-based Kapoor-Miller. “So the currency fluctuations of the local exchange rate are not something I am worried about.”

What are the key skills required to become a travel agent?

“Travel agents need a mix of customer service, communication, destination knowledge, organizational, and problem-solving skills,” says Kapoor-Miller. “But I would say that adaptability, flexibility, curiosity, and cultural sensitivity top them all—you have to put yourself in other's shoes, and understand the requirements, hopes, and expectations of your clients along with any worries and questions they may have.”

It’s vital to have a passion for traveling, even the aspects of the process that aren’t as exciting, such as learning about new airline routes, train schedule updates, and industry news. “It can be an information-heavy hustle, and I believe it's important to be excited about it as that energy definitely transfers to your clients and partners,” Villarosa says.

Should travel advisors choose a specialization?

Many travel advisors have found success through becoming an expert in a few types of travel and destinations. “It's important to become an authority and learn as much as you can through personal experiences and continuing education,” says Ellis. “As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community , an avid snow skier, and scuba diver, I know not only the popular destinations but others that are off the beaten path, equally safe and adventurous for all travelers.” This helps travel agents establish a competitive edge, and hopefully convince potential clients to choose them for their expertise.

What are the benefits of being a travel agent?

“Flexibility tops them all,” says Kapoor-Miller. “And the ability to start without industry knowledge. If you worry that you are too old for this job, the good news is that this is a job you can enter and enjoy at any age.”

Another great perk is the "Familiarization trip,” says Ellis. “Tourism boards and hotels invite agents to visit and familiarize themselves with a particular country and its properties. After all, any accomplished salesperson should learn everything they can about their products first-hand...even if they're in Bora Bora.” It's hard work, but someone's got to do it.

Raise your hand if you love to travel. Whether you’re often on the road or take a vacation just once a year, you’ve probably heard of travel agents. These folks help plan and book itineraries for you, eliminating a lot of the pain points when it comes to traveling.

These days many people skip out on a travel agent in lieu of booking their trip online, but if you’re a frequent traveler, you may want to become a travel agent yourself. Why? Because it can save you a lot of money — and may even earn you some in the process.

Let’s take a look at how to become a travel agent, why it’s something you may want to consider and the ways it can work for you.

Why become a travel agent?

Have you ever obsessively researched the best hotels in a city you’re planning to visit? How about checking seat maps on an airplane? If getting into the nitty-gritty of travel logistics is something you do in your spare time, you might also enjoy becoming a travel agent.

Not only do you get to plan trips for others, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of special discounts on many facets of travel.

This is true for your clients, but also for yourself. Travel agents have access to a variety of discounted rates on both airlines and hotels, even when booking travel for themselves.

How to become a travel agent

Find a program.

Becoming a travel agent isn’t as simple as declaring yourself one. Typically, the first step is to sign up for a program that’ll teach you the basics of running your own travel business.

There are a variety of programs to choose from, depending on your interests and career goals. Most programs will teach you about the business side of being a travel agent as well as how to plan trips, so your courses in itinerary planning and travel insurance will be coupled with business ethics and customer service.

If you’re wondering how to become a travel agent from home, don’t worry. Many of these courses don’t have to be done in person; there are online programs that will teach you everything you need to know from the comfort of your living room.

Apply for certification

Once you’ve completed your coursework, you’ll want to apply for certification. Although there is no single standard that designates you a travel agent, there are a number of different identifiers that you can acquire. Some of the more common ones are:

International Air Transport Association, or IATA, which allows you to book travel on domestic and international airlines.

Travel Industry Designator Service, or TIDS, which allows agents to book trips with a variety of travel suppliers and receive commissions.

Cruise Lines International Association, or CLIA, which provides agents the ability to book trips on cruises around the world.

In order to access Marriott’s travel advisor rates, for example, you can use any three of these designations, along with a variety of others.

Each of these associations and identifiers have different implications for your business, so you’ll want to be sure you’ve fully researched them before applying for membership.

Save money as a travel agent

Once you’ve qualified as a travel agent, what comes next? If you travel frequently, becoming a travel agent can be a huge benefit to you, as it offers discounted rates and access to luxury travel options.

Discounted rates

Travel agents have access to negotiated rates that aren’t available to the general public. The exact amount will vary depending on the business. Hilton, for example, will give personal travel discounts of 50% off at newly-opened hotels and up to 25% off at the remainder of hotels within Hilton’s portfolio.

Hyatt, meanwhile, will give you a discount on personal travel of up to 50%, but only during select dates of the year. And although not all airlines give discounts to travel agents, many do.

Regardless, these are some pretty spectacular savings, and if you’re looking to save money on your vacations, being a travel agent can help.

Luxury programs

Becoming a travel agent isn’t only about saving money, however. It also grants you access to many hotel chains’ luxury travel programs.

If you’re big into elite status benefits, this is definitely something you’ll want to consider — especially since you don’t need any status at all to receive these perks, as long as you book through the hotel’s agent portal.

Most major hotel chains have these programs, including Hyatt Privé, Hilton Impresario, Marriott STARS & Luminous, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Belmond Bellini Club, Rosewood Elite, Mandarin Oriental Fan Club and Shangri-La Luxury Circle.

While benefits vary by brand, many of these offers include things like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, early check-in or late checkout and credits for expenses like dining or spa services. General consumers aren’t eligible for these programs, but once you’ve become a registered travel agent, they become accessible to you; however, some programs — such as Hyatt Privé — are invitation only.

For the most part, booking rooms through these programs shouldn’t cost more than the standard rate you’d be paying anyway, so you have the potential to get big benefits without shelling out any additional money.

However, note that these numbers don’t take into account any other discounted rates for which you may be eligible, such as those offered to American Automobile Association members and veterans .

Earn money as a travel agent

Of course, becoming a travel agent isn’t all about scoring discounts for yourself. If you’re looking to earn some money, being a travel agent can be a good way to do so.

Note that travel agents operate in a customer-facing role, so you’ll also need to be able to build client relationships and be comfortable with sales. Courses such as those mentioned above can help train you to do this and run a successful business.

If booking travel and organizing trips for others is something that appeals to you, there’s definitely money to be earned. Marriott, for example, gives agents a commission of between 8% and 10% for all eligible stays booked.

Everything You Need to Know About Becoming a Travel Agent

Here's what you should know before becoming a travel agent.

becoming a cruise travel agent

If you're someone who spends your days scanning flights , loves hotel rewards points, and in general, is a fervent traveler, you've probably wondered how to become a travel agent.

And, while it's true that living in the age of Expedia means travel agents are not as vital as they once were, people use them a lot more than you might think. Just because travelers aren't calling up an agent every time they need to book a quick flight doesn't mean they don't want to consult an expert for a big trip. This holds especially true when it comes to honeymoons or experiential trips that have a lot of moving parts — coordinating tour companies , translators, or multiple resort stays, for example. It's often easier to leave the logistics to someone else: travel agents.

You don't need a specific employment background to become a travel agent, so if you're looking for a fresh career start, that's totally OK. You have to start somewhere on your path to becoming a travel agent, and the sooner you jump in, the sooner you'll build your client base. On the other hand, if you're hoping to parlay your experience in a semi-related industry, be it marketing or hospitality, that can help because you'll have even more context for your new gig. Either way, this can be a rewarding career path (with some fun perks), so here's what you need to know to become a travel agent.

Formal Training Needed to Become a Travel Agent

While some four-year colleges, community colleges, and trade schools offer tourism certifications, it is not a requirement for those trying to become travel agents. Certificates of tourism can be very helpful, but so can previous training in marketing, hospitality, or even event planning. Ultimately, your knowledge of destinations, sales, itinerary planning, and booking software will be crucial for your career as a travel agent.

In terms of the training time you need to put in before becoming a fully-fledged travel agent, it depends. You could start your career right after high school, or you could put in one to four years to earn a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree in tourism. Of course, you could also change course from a related job, and morph your experience as, say, a destination wedding planner into a career as a travel agent.

Training Programs Available

You could take classes with a company like The Travel Institute to earn your certification. Not only will they teach you the basics of planning itineraries, but they'll also make sure you're learning about new cultures, world geography, and experiences you can have all over the world. They'll also help you decide what business route you want to take.

How to Become a Travel Agent: The Logistics

Becoming a travel agent will likely mean starting your own business . On the plus side, it requires relatively little overhead. If you're becoming a small business owner by opening a yoga studio, for example, you will need to rent a space, deal with permits, buy supplies, build a website, and pay yoga teachers and someone to work the front desk. However, if you're starting a travel agent business, you can operate from your living room and there aren't nearly as many upfront costs.

You will have to think about what type of business you want to become. Do you want to incorporate or become an LLC? Would you rather be a sole proprietor? Incorporating takes the most effort, and is often the most expensive. Becoming an LLC is a good happy medium because it can help protect you as a business entity without having as many associated costs. Small business owners typically become an LLC to protect their personal assets. If you get sued as an LLC, someone can come after your business holdings, but can't come after your house, car, or personal savings.

If you choose to remain a sole proprietor (which doesn't require any fees or legwork), you are essentially a freelancer or independent contractor. You can be an LLC and an independent contractor, too — they aren't mutually exclusive. If you want to be an independent contractor, it likely means you're working as part of a larger host agency, which is smart to do when you're starting out as a travel agent. Down the road, you can also own a travel agency franchise. Owning a franchise might come with more overhead costs, and that would be a reason to incorporate.

If you're an independent contractor, you should know that your taxes aren't going to be as straightforward as a full-time employee's might be. You may have to start keeping track of your business expenses, as you might be able to write them off. You also might not get things like health benefits from your employer. As you plan your new career, consider sitting down with an established travel agent to ask them some logistical questions: Where do they get their health insurance? How do they keep track of their income and expenses? Do they use an accountant to do their taxes? While meeting with the travel agent, you can discuss the pros and cons of working for a larger agency, too. If you're not sure how to get in touch with other travel agents, consider using social media, like LinkedIn or even Instagram.

What to Think About When You Become a Travel Agent

Once you've secured work as a travel agent, you'll want to think about how you can earn more money and distinguish yourself from other agents. Here are three things to consider as you start your career.

Making Commissions: If you're working for a larger travel agency as an independent contractor, how do commissions work? Make sure you have this conversation early on before accepting the position. When you're starting out, you want to make sure the commission rate you're receiving is similar to the industry standard.

Growing Your Client Base: How do you make more money as a travel agent? Clients, clients, clients. You want happy customers who will return to you every time they want to book a travel experience. You'll want to keep your clients happy by finding them great deals, curating unbelievable experiences for them, and simply being great to work with.

Establishing a Niche: This is by no means a requirement for becoming a travel agent, but as you establish your career, you may want to consider focusing on a specific niche. For example, perhaps you're someone who focuses on honeymoon travel , luxury travel, or adventure travel . Your niche can help you attract clients, and it can be anything in the travel realm, as long as there's a need for it.

Class in session: new ‘royal caribbean university’ agent training program opens its doors.

Global Cruise Line Introduces Redesigned Online Education Platform for Travel Agents

MIAMI, July 24, 2017 – Enrollment is now open. Royal Caribbean International has launched an entirely new online travel agent training program – Royal Caribbean University (RCU).  The comprehensive platform offers professionals a highly visual, interactive and mobile-friendly approach to online learning, where they can reinforce their knowledge and success in selling Royal Caribbean to earn a coveted “degree” in adventure and an enhanced lineup of rewards from the world’s most adventurous cruise line.

The new educational resource continues the cruise company’s promise to deliver the most reliable and up-to-date information about itineraries, features, services and tools, doing so in a completely different way than it’s been done before. From bold and responsive design to concise, video-based training modules, RCU was created with the on-the-go pace of the travel professional in mind.

“We are incredibly excited to unveil Royal Caribbean University. Travel agents are our most valued partners, and providing them with not only the right tools but the best is at the core of our commitment to their success,” said Vicki Freed, senior vice president, Sales, Trade Support and Service, Royal Caribbean International. “Learning has evolved, and we have designed RCU to offer up education in a way that is robust and informative while also being fun and engaging.”

Highlights of the newly designed program include simplified navigation throughout, quick tips and highlights, continuous knowledge opportunities, bold imagery, and productive and useful communication methods that make students’ time count.

Presented in a format that is engaging and succinct, RCU’s course curriculum is made up of three tracks – the Campus Tour , Bachelor of Adventure and Master of Adventure . The micro-learning segments progressively take travel partners through every aspect of a signature Royal Caribbean vacation, including the soon-to-be 25-ship fleet, dining, accommodations, entertainment, accessible programming, and destinations. After graduating the bachelor and master levels, agents can be eligible to receive a variety of rewards such as CLIA credits, a Passport to Savings booklet, onboard credit, complimentary VOOM WiFi, and opportunities to attend Seminars at Sea and even the Symphony of the Seas inaugural sailing in 2018.

Travel professionals are able to join the new student body by logging onto CruisingPower.com beginning today, and can look forward to continual enhancements and new learning opportunities in the future.

Travel Agent Shares With Us The Best Hacks To Try When Booking A Cruise

B ooking a cruise is a bit of an art form. With so many deals out there, it can be difficult to know which ones are worth your time. To help cruise enthusiasts navigate the process, we asked Victoria Fricke, a travel agent with  Vic's Vacations , for her best hacks. Her first tip is always to book with the cruise line directly. While prices can fluctuate between different cruise booking sites, making it tempting to save a few bucks, it may not be worth it, she says. "Similar to a flight, you want to have full control over your cruise if something goes wrong and you have to cancel or make a change."

Any discounts from a third-party website may be nominal when you consider the headache if things don't go as planned. Instead, focus your efforts on  booking your cruise at the right time . "The goal is to book a cruise when there is a promotion that helps save money or gives you bonuses like onboard credits, drink packages, and more! Don't worry, your travel agent can help identify these for you!" Fricke explains.

Cabin Values

Once you've figured out what time to book, you'll need to think about cabin choices. The best value on a cruise ship is always an interior room with windows. Another option is a guaranteed stateroom, which means you won't get to select your room, but you will be assured a cabin within a specific category, says Fricke. "Both are cheaper ways to sail, but both come with some warnings. If you opt for the cheapest room on board, expect the least enjoyable experience."

While  inside cabins  may be half the price, they tend to be on the smaller side, which can be tricky if there's more than one person. They may also be located in noisy areas, interrupting your sleep or quiet time. The cabin guarantees come with their own challenges. "If you pick a room like a veranda guarantee (Guaranteed to have a balcony, just no say in what that looks like), you might envision a large space to lay on your chair and sun, but end up in a room that has just a slight opening out to see the water with the rest being a steel beam from the side of the ship," says Fricke. The travel agent emphasizes, "If you want a luxury experience on a ship, you'll ultimately need to pay for it."

Timing And Bundles

One of the best times to get a deal is immediately when the itinerary opens. As soon as the rooms begin to sell out, particularly on cruises that sail during school breaks and holidays, the prices increase significantly. However, even if you miss the initial booking period, you can still find last-minute deals on the remaining schedule. Additionally, if you're willing to drive to a nearby port city, you may be able to save a considerable amount of money.

Then, of course, there are sales and promotions, many of which you can find with an app like Shipmate. Just be sure to  rope in your travel agent , as cruises sometimes inflate prices before rooms go on sale. Fricke adds that you should "ideally, have a baseline for how much that cruise costs without a promotion to ensure you're getting the deal you think you are!"

While it may be tempting to bundle your flight and cruise, proceed cautiously. A cruise is typically expected to offer a serene experience, yet you could find yourself flying to the port city on the same day and dealing with airport hassle. "One missed connection or cancelled flight, and you've missed your cruise." To curb this, Fricke advises that you should "Fly in the day prior, stay at a nearby hotel, go to dinner, and enjoy the first sunset of your vacation, then board the ship the next morning refreshed and ready to relax!" You don't have to tell us twice.
