How far in advance do you book shore excursions?

How far in advance do you start looking for shore excursions? How far in advance do you actually book them? We usually do not book with the ship (unless it's cost effective or we can't find it anywhere else). I know the cruise we did a couple years ago, we tried to book almost months in advance and they were already sold out, yet at the same time I hate to book to early because times/tours may change. So how far ahead of time to you book?

If it is something I really, really want to do, I will book it when it becomes available. Otherwise, I book them a month or two before departure.

Like you, we book mostly private excursions, however we book ship cruises where the excursion is long and the port time is short...eg. visiting some of the ruins in Belize. We book those early, maybe 6 mos in advance, knowing that they are fully refundable prior to the cruise, and even on the cruise as long as you are within 24 (sometimes 48) hours of the tour.

The tours that you really do have to book early (perhaps 3-4 months) are those with very limited participation...e.g. jeep tours with limited seating or helicopter/balloon tours.

As soon as possible if you are looking at private tours, under 10 people or so. All of the really good tour guides book up so fast. If you find one that is getting a lot of rave reviews, book immediately as they will fill up. If you don't mind going with a large group, say over 20 people, then you won't need to secure as quickly. For some of the big companies, they will have slots available later but the guides they put you with will most likely not be their best. This has been my experience but I am sure there are others who have "lucked" out and been able to book last minute with a fabulous tour guide. :)

Do you know if it is possible to pre-book a Celebrity excursion before I board and use my onboard credit to pay for it? Or do I have to pre-pay if I book it ahead of time?

Yes you can pre book but No you can't use your obc when you pre book.

If there is something we know for sure we want to book and tends to sell out quickly, we book ASAP. :)

something else to consider is how many ships will be in port on the day you are there. We were in Cozumel last week with 5 other ships, but we had a private excursion booked 8 months in advance. It was possibly the best one ever for us, and there were only 10 people, so I am glad we booked when we did!

I do the research months away and try to organize private tours, if viable. If we book any ship's tours, I usually book 3 months out. They can sell out.

If I have OBC and book shore excursions after we board can I use my OBC at that point in time to pay for them?

Bailey & Sophie

You can use OBC if you book on board through the cruise ship. OBC won't work with a private excursion. I've never done a private tour. From what I understand, some operators want payment upfront, some at the end of the tour.

If you want to book through the cruise ship, remember that there may be limitation on how many they can accommodate. Last Feb we decided to cancel a hiking tour because it was raining. We wanted to replace it with something else but the only excursions were snorkeling or SCUBA type tours because everything was sold out.

And, Celebrity will cancel tours if there is not enough participation. This has happened to us a couple of times and we didn't find out until we got to our cabin.

Thanks for your response, we may end up with a lot of OBC and want to be able to use it all. I will just pick a couple of different options in case our first choice is not available to book when we get onboard. I am also hoping the shore excursions desk is open as soon as you board so that we can reserve right away.

Have fun. There's usually a bit of a line at the excursion desk. We usually grab a beverage of choice and wait in line. It does go pretty fast.

If you fill out the form and drop it in the reservation slot instead of speaking to someone, you won't know if the excursion is full, cancelled or available. Spend the time and wait in line so you KNOW you can get the tour you want. As you've probably seen on-line, some ports have a lot of options, and some not so many. Having a couple of options is a great idea.

I just booked a Celebrity shore excursion for an August cruise and the website 'encouraged' me to pay for it right away but was unclear if it was necessary or not. Do I need to pay in advance in order to insure the reservation?

Crafted Experiences with Your Needs in Mind

At Celebrity, we’re proud to help all our guests see more of the world. Our dedicated accessible shore excursions team will make it possible for everyone in your party to have unforgettable experiences in the port cities you visit.

Before your cruise departs, email the team your itinerary at [email protected] , and mention what you and your fellow travelers would like to see and do while you’re ashore. Our Shore Excursion Coordinator can help you find out if there are accessible tours in that port, and recommend which of them seems to be right for you.

These guided wheelchair accessible cruise excursions include tours of city centers and ancient ruins, scenic drives along the coast or trips to the area’s most beautiful beaches, and even wheelchair accessible trains like the White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway, Alaska that offer amazing views of natural wonders.

Experience the Allure of the Far East on Asia Shore Excursions

Exotic. Evocative. Extraordinary: Words that perfectly describe Asia shore excursions on offer when your Asia cruise travels take you to far Pacific ports of call around the South China Sea, the Sea of Japan, and beyond.

Experience Singapore , traditional and contemporary, by daylight and moonlight, on Asia cruise excursions that put the sights, sounds, and scents of the city within easy reach, and where ancient architecture meets modern innovation. Take a break from sightseeing and try your hand at creating national dishes at a cooking session that evokes the spice world of long ago and the culinary trends of today.

When your cruise ship docks in Laem Chabang, savor a land and sea excursion taking in Thailand’s “Venice of the East,” Bangkok ; discover the city’s spiritual nature as you visit the Sanctuary of the Truth wooden pavilion; marvel at the reclining Buddha at Wat Po temple; or daytrip-it to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thailand’s ancient capital Ayutthya.

Asia shore excursions while in Vietnamese ports of call offer city tours that combine visits to historic landmarks like Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh City with cultural heritage sites like Notre Dame Cathedral, a testament to the city’s French heritage, and Jade Emperor Temple. On a day-long tour of Hanoi , you’ll see the hallmarks of an ancient country, including the Temple of Literature that dates from 1070 and is dedicated to Confucius.

As a cruise destination, Japan combines incomparable beauty with an extraordinary blending of ancient and modern cultures, and on Asia cruise excursions you’ll navigate beyond the ports to the most iconic sights: Mt. Fuji on Honshu, the harmonious Seibi-en Garden in the Aomori Prefecture, Sumiyoshi Taisha, a most revered shrine in Osaka, and Hiroshima. Tokyo shore excursions are as fascinating and varied as the city itself, pairing for example, the art of a geisha performance and the culinary artistry of a multicourse Kaiseki dinner.

When in port at Hong Kong , hop a turbo-ferry to exotic Macau for an unforgettable day of touring this UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its blended Portuguese-Chinese culture; or wander among the throngs on Hong Kong’s bustling streets, and capture the spectacular views from the Victoria Park tram.

Sail into Seoul, South Korea , and see the city’s past, present, and future on guided excursions that include the DMZ, the piece of land that separates South Korea from North Korea. Sip tea at a Korean temple and hear about the art of the tea ceremony.

11 epic around-the-world cruises that will check off all your bucket list travel destinations

I magine the joys of traveling seamlessly from one bucket list country to another without packing and unpacking, switching hotels, boarding countless flights or even doing laundry.

Think it's a fantasy? It's actually a world cruise, the nirvana of many ocean-going devotees. As a bonus, most of these around-the-world voyages include enviable perks, like pre-cruise hotel stays, alcohol, shipboard credit, exclusive-access shore excursions — and, yes, laundry service.

Retired, taking a job hiatus or working remotely? A world cruise is a safe, easy and exhilarating way to score a global adventure beyond compare. You might even make new lifelong friends sharing similar interests.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

So, pull out your travel wish list and find an itinerary for those coveted destinations.

Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 11 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

World Voyage

Thanks to an overwhelming response to its 2024 world cruise (which is currently waitlisted), Azamara announced itineraries for both 2025 and 2026, both aboard the 684-passenger Azamara Onward.

Azamara Onward is the newest ship to join the Miami-based line's four-vessel fleet. The ship's size provides an intimate experience and allows it to call on small towns bigger ships can't access.

For 2025, the 155-night, 37-country voyage begins in San Diego and ends in Southampton, England, with visits to exciting locales in French Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Italy, France and others.

Along the way, world cruisers can sample authentic Hawaiian cuisine; explore the unspoiled beaches and the lush rainforest on Stewart Island, New Zealand; and visit the world's largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia.

The itinerary will include a pre-sailing welcome party, exclusive cultural events, concierge service and other upscale perks.

The 2026 world cruise sets sail from Miami and concludes in Barcelona. The itinerary for this 155-night expedition features some of the world's most iconic landmarks and sites.

Cruisers will have the opportunity to explore the great pyramid of Kukulcan and other ancient Mayan sites in Chichen Itza, Mexico; wander among Rio de Janeiro's architectural gems and experience the awe of Iguazu Falls in Brazil; sample Peruvian cuisine and soak in the landscape of Machu Picchu in Cusco; scale the Great Wall of China; and enjoy other bucket-list worthy adventures.

If luxury and unparalleled personal service are important to you, consider Crystal 's 2025 world cruise aboard Crystal Serenity .

The beloved upscale line went bankrupt and stopped sailing in 2022. However, luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent acquired it and brought it back to life with a $150 million glow-up, starting with 740-passenger Crystal Serenity.

With newly renovated expansive suites, an array of social areas and nearly one staff member per guest, Crystal Serenity offers ultimate comfort, quality and personalization. Every cabin comes with a butler ready to assist with reservations, laundry and any other needs you have during your global odyssey.

Beginning in Fort Lauderdale and concluding in Barcelona, the sailing spans 123 nights with visits to 31 countries. The cruise kicks off with a welcome celebration, and guests can enjoy themed onboard and shoreside events and gala dinners throughout the sailing.

Exciting destinations along the way include Belize, Honduras, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Jordan. Passengers can get a close-up look at Argentine tango through performances, enjoy street food in Sri Lanka's capital city and celebrate like a Greek god on Mount Olympus, among other events.

Queen Anne's maiden World Voyage in 2025 will span 111 nights, beginning and ending in Hamburg, Germany. Step One Dance Company presents works by noted choreographers. Count on a buzzy casino, fine dining at specialty restaurants and a professionally staffed fitness center.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Navigate the world.

World cruises prove perpetually popular on this ultraluxe line. They often sell out in the blink of an eye.

Availability is limited on the 2025 150-night world cruise on the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner, sailing round-trip from Miami to San Francisco. This itinerary includes cruising in Antarctica, the Chilean fjords, French Polynesia, Taipei and Bali.

Perhaps because its 2025 sailing is nearly sold out, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the first cruise lines to announce its 2026 world voyage, also on Seven Seas Mariner.

This journey will be the line's longest, sailing for 154 nights and visiting 77 ports in 41 countries across six continents. The itinerary includes three new ports of call for Regent, including Lifou Island and Mare of the Loyalty Islands in the New Caledonia archipelago. Count on visiting 47 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Robben Island in South Africa.

For all its around-the-world cruises, Regent piles on primo inclusions — first-class flights, unlimited shore excursions, luggage service, an open bar and a visa package are among countless amenities.

The 2025 world cruise departs Jan. 7, 2025. Prices start from $87,999 per person.

Wonderfully remote ports, like Cochin, India; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Nuuk, Greenland, tempt travelers to come aboard for the long haul.

This New Cruise Ship Has an Unprecedented Design, Elegant Suites, and 'Quirky' Cocktails

Here's a closer look at the Silver Nova, one of the newest ships from the luxury line Silversea.

David Swanson is a San Diego-based freelance writer and photographer who has traveled to more than 100 countries. His work has been featured in The Washington Post , USA Today , Los Angeles Times , National Geographic Traveler , Miami Herald , and Travel + Leisure .

The Staterooms

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

On my first trip with Silversea, more than a decade ago, I cooed over risotto flecked with gold leaf. I swooned when my husband and I were serenaded by a jazz duo in an intimate supper club. I loved that the bartenders would remember our favorite drinks — each one presented on linen napkin — and I learned what it was like to have a butler who polished my shoes, seeing that they were sorely in need of a shine.

I also noted things Silversea didn’t have. Those bartenders didn’t hand me a bill to sign, no hands were out for a tip. There were no pushy announcements hawking tours, shopping lectures, or onboard art auctions, nor photographers plaintively begging for a pose so they could sell me a snapshot later. There were, in short, none of the annoyances you sometimes find on ships.

So when I boarded Silver Nova in 2023, I had a feeling the ship would be defined as much by what it didn’t have as by what it did. And, true to that Silversea DNA, I found that this vessel seemed to almost disappear. Instead, the seagoing experience blossomed, as my fellow passengers and I sighted islands and enjoyed the weave of coastlines. Many of today’s most talked-about cruise ships work to focus our attention inwards; Silver Nova , by contrast, reminds us to look out — and to appreciate where we’re going.

This bit of alchemy is all thanks to the remarkable, asymmetrical design of Silver Nova . This aesthetically pleasing choice also allowed designers to eliminate most structures on the upper decks, allowing the sea and landscapes to tell their story. To take just one example, the pool doesn’t sit on the ship’s centerline, as is common. Instead, it unspools along the starboard side, yielding an openness that is unprecedented on a small cruise ship.

“On the open decks of other ships you see a lot of stuff — attractions, distractions, a lot of things that keep your eyes busy,” explained Andrea Tonet, Silversea’s vice president of product strategy. “We did the opposite, we removed everything that was not necessary, every obstacle, to create this unobstructed view of the sea and the destination.”  As a result, I always felt like I had a clear sense of being somewhere while aboard. I gained a deeper sense of connection to my environment.

That said, Silver Nova is on the larger side, at least among true luxury ships, with space for 728 passengers. But it also has a capacious passenger-to-space ratio that lends the vessel a welcome openness.

A ship of glass and curves, a desire to bring the destinations to the guest, and a chart marked for some of the world’s most appealing places — here is my review of Silversea’s Silver Nova .

  • Though larger overall than is typical for a luxury ship, Silver Nova is spacious and uncrowded, offering more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel.
  • Silversea’s groundbreaking S.A.L.T. program has been elevated for Nova , providing localized culinary immersion both at sea and on land.
  • With its ample outdoor deck space, the ship is well-suited for warm-weather voyages and scenic areas, such as Alaska’s Inside Passage and New Zealand’s Milford Sound.
  • In a first for Silversea, Nova has aft-facing suites, including eight with wraparound balconies offering remarkable panoramic views.

The all-suite Nova has nine different stateroom layouts, starting with standard veranda categories, which make up more than 75 percent of the ship’s accommodations. These measure 301 square feet inside and feature a subdued palette of grey and cappuccino tones. The 54-square-foot teak veranda is big enough for two to enjoy a meal, and marble bathrooms are equipped with a roomy shower stall (many have both a full tub and separate shower). All suites include a walk-in closet, vanity table, a large TV, and stocked minibar. A butler is available at all hours, and in-room dining is provided by most of the ship’s venues.

Throughout, Silversea’s custom mattresses are sumptuous and sleep-inducing, with combed Egyptian cotton bedding by Milan’s Rivolta Carmignani. There’s a pillow menu, with feather/down blends, memory foam, and two hypoallergenic options, medium and firm.

A variety of larger suites are available, but the star is a pair of Otium Suites, each spanning 1,324 square feet and each featuring a huge wraparound balcony with private hot tub. Thanks to the ship’s asymmetrical design, these balconies protrude in a way that allows for 270-degree views.

Silversea’s culinary program is a point of pride for the brand. Atlantide is Nova ’s de facto main dining room, a handsome venue that offers a selection of steaks, lobster, and caviar in a plush, comfortable setting. Next door, the ambitious menu at S.A.L.T. Kitchen evolves by day, taking inspiration from the destination in which the ship is sailing.  For example, on trips to Croatia, guests might find Dalmatian sardines marinated in lemon; along Central America you might encounter hearty escabeche.

La Terrazza’s menu features Italian specialties, with pasta made onboard, while Silver Note is a swank supper club, where gourmet tapas are served against a backdrop of live jazz. Located up top, the Marquee is capped by an airy, two-story pergola that dapples the venue with shade; views from every table are almost unimpeded.  Full breakfasts are served at the Marquee, and at lunch you’ll find an al fresco rotisserie with salads, burgers, and Neapolitan-style pizzas; at night grill your own chops.

Although Silversea is a mostly inclusive cruise line, three of the restaurants require a surcharge: La Dame does a selection of French classics ($160 including wine pairings), and Kaiseki has a full-on Asian menu ($40). S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table has seating for up to 24 diners, with 11-course tasting menus embellished with anecdotes about the history of each dish or signature ingredient ($180 including wine and cocktail pairings).

The ship has several bars, including Panorama Lounge, a retreat found aboard all Silversea vessels. On Nova, the bar’s outdoor terrace includes a small fireplace, a feature I don’t recall seeing on any other cruise ship.  Also of note is the Dusk Bar, which sits aft on Deck 10 and is stocked with interesting spirits. (I found it to be a great spot for sunset selfies.) The S.A.L.T. Bar was probably my favorite spot, with graceful outdoor seating and a menu of unusual cocktails featuring quirky ingredients cued to the ship’s regional itinerary.

Through early 2026, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding.  In the spring and fall, as the ship transits between the two hemispheres, watch for voyages along the coasts of Asia, including some circumnavigations of Japan.

On Nova , a selection of both included and added-cost shore excursions are offered. In places like Alaska, the included tours cover a variety of activities, from coach rides to scenic areas, whale watching, e-bike trips, hiking, and kayaking. In Australia and New Zealand, options include kayaking in the Whitsunday Islands, a vintage steam train ride near Melbourne, and a Maori cultural experience.

In Alaska, helicopter trips to a glacier where a dog-sled camp is based, or a private fishing and crabbing tour are among the added-cost tours. In Australia and New Zealand, add-on tours include a private car and guide in most ports, Hunter Valley wineries by helicopter, and a tour of the Lord of the Rings filming locations and Weta Studios. Other tours are built around the S.A.L.T. program and focused on regional culinary angles, available at extra cost.

Silver Nova ’s asymmetrical design allows for a chic, expansive pool deck — a grand total of more than 42,000 square feet across two decks. With that kind of elbow room, there's hardly a need to wake up early to claim a deck chair. The swimming pool sits close to the starboard side, and the seating and elevated walkways around it create an amphitheater-like effect, with a backdrop that can go on for miles. To me, it felt like being at a supercool rooftop bar or cliff's-edge resort — with a panorama that's ever changing.

Silversea’s S.A.L.T. ecosystem, which is on several of the line's ships, deserves special mention as an amenity, too. The acronym stands for Sea and Land Taste, and describes numerous food-focused experiences on and off the ship. Some of the core moments are available at the previously mentioned S.A.L.T. Bar, Kitchen, and Chef's Table; there's also a gorgeous S.A.L.T. Lab, a space that allows for hands-on culinary lessons. The culinary programming extends to talks and demos held in the ship's Venetian Lounge, as well as on shore excursions branded as part of S.A.L.T. Bottom line, if deep-diving into the cuisine of a specific destination is your goal, look for the S.A.L.T. "stamp."

Elsewhere, the Otium Spa has among its features a steam room and indoor thermal pool with floor-to-ceiling sea views. There’s a fitness center, and personal trainers are available for individual or group sessions.  The spacious Venetian Lounge spans two decks — a rarity on a smaller ship — with cabaret seating and tiered banquettes for music performances, movie screenings, and other group programs. A few more intimate spaces include the Connoisseur’s Corner, a cigar lounge and bar, and the small yet delightful library, tucked behind the Observation Lounge.

Without dedicated kids areas, Silver Nova was not designed for children. But families who don’t need high-powered diversions to keep children engaged will find a welcoming environment at sea and, during holiday periods, possibly other children to socialize with. Silversea allows children over the age of six months, as long as they’re accompanied by an adult over the age of 21; babysitting services are not available.

Public areas of Silver Nova , including all restaurants, bars, and the spa, are wheelchair accessible. Embarkation and disembarkation are also typically accessible, with a gangway that's flat enough to accommodate mobility devices; in ports where stairs are involved, crew members can provide assistance. The vessel also keeps some wheelchairs for guest use.

Nova has braille/tactile public room signage, elevator buttons, staircase handrails, and stateroom numbers.

The ship has six ADA accessible suites, on various decks, in the Premium Veranda and Silver Suite categories. Each is equipped with wider entrance doors and appropriate paths of travel for wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility equipment, and each includes an accessible bathroom and shower. All areas within these suites are reachable without the need for additional ramps, and features an accessible bathroom with vanity and separate shower.
