Nickel Tour: Get To Know Great Tour Guides

Banjo billy's bus tour: history, mystery and bad jokes.

As Banjo Billy drives to one of seven anchor sites that make up the 100-minute tour, he tells crime, ghost and historical stories about buildings along the way.

The rambling, funky ride called Banjo Billy's Bus Tours, in Boulder, Colo., is equal parts history, crime stories and comedy. It's all woven together by John Georgis — better known as Banjo Billy — in a playful, "choose your own adventure" style.

"You can either choose a PG tour, or a PG-13 tour, or an R-rated tour," he tells one group of riders. The crowd chooses the R-rated version, but they have to work for it.

"If you want the R-rated tour, you gotta say it like a pirate," Banjo says, drawing a bunch of "arrrrghs" from tour-goers. "R it is!"

Overall, the experience is less Pirates of the Caribbean than Beverly Hillbillies . As we ride through Boulder's affluent downtown streets, Banjo Billy's remodeled school bus attracts plenty of stares. And what's better than cruising in a log cabin on wheels that occasionally makes barnyard sounds at pedestrians?

"All right, crime or history?" asks the tour guide. The group wants crime, so he points to a bank on the left — Boulder's oldest continuous bank. "It opened up in 1899. It's also the very first bank in Boulder to be robbed."

Banjo Billy explains that a 71-year-old man took a bus from Denver and used a water bottle as a weapon, claiming it was nitroglycerin.

"I like this story for two reasons," he says. "No. 1, it took almost 100 years for the first bank in Boulder to be robbed. When it is robbed, it's robbed in Boulder style. Robs it with a bottle of water.

"If he would have had a prairie dog in his pocket, it would have been the Boulder trifecta."

One common question on the tour has to do with Georgis himself. How did he get the name Banjo Billy? In 2005, he quit his job as a data analyst and bought a school bus on eBay. Then he remodeled it, raising the roof and removing the windows.

"So, when we took those out it started looking like a shack on wheels, and my friends started laughing at me," he says, adding that his friends said he looked like a hillbilly. "And they started calling me Banjo. But Banjo John doesn't sound very good. So we went with the alliteration. Banjo Billy's Bus Tours."

So far, there's only one place Banjo Billy won't visit in Boulder.

The Banjo Billy bus tour starts and ends outside the Hotel Boulderado, at the corner of 13th and Spruce streets. Banjo shares some haunting tales from previous (and possibly still-current) guests, particularly those on the third floor and inside the still-functioning Otis elevator. Courtesy of Vince Darcangelo hide caption

"Talking about unsolved cases, we never have done and never will do the JonBenet Ramsey case. It is not on the tour," he says, explaining to tour-goers that it's "just too darn sad."

Banjo Billy approaches a parking lot next to a green meadow framed by mountains and three towering rock formations called Flatirons. This is Chautauqua Park, where everyone brings out their cameras. But they're not here for the views — they're here for a story about a dumpster.

"So every fall there's a race from that trash can to the base of that third flatiron," Banjo Billy. " The record was broken in 2008 by a guy named Dave Mackey."

How fast, you wonder?

"Dave did that round trip, from trash can to trash can, in 33 minutes, 17 seconds," Banjo says.

That's news to Carolyn Molitor who lives outside of Boulder. She signed up for the tour because she had family visiting from out of town, and says she learned a few things.

"A little bit of history, a little bit of mystery, a little bit of bad jokes," she says.

Molitor says she hopes to return with her friends for another tour because Banjo Billy excels at juggling mundane settler history with funny anecdotes.

"OK, that's the worst joke I know, and that's how I'm going to end the tour. Thanks for coming onto Banjo Billy's. Cheers," he says.

Most of the passengers don't mind some groaners along the way.

Quite a Ride: Banjo Billy’s Bus Tour

banjo billy ghost tour

John Georgis, aka Banjo Billy, regales crowds with the stories of those ghosts on his one-of-a-kind bus tours, via a 1994 school bus that he refurbished into a Hillbilly shack on wheels. With Halloween just around the corner, now is the perfect time to jump on the shack and be terrified, horrified and tremendously amused by Banjo Billy and his Ghosts of Boulder Tour.

banjo billy ghost tour

I joined the tour on a cold, gray, drizzly Sunday afternoon — the perfect day for a ghost tour. When I saw the bus parked in front of the Hotel Boulderado, the departure point for the tours, I couldn’t help but laugh. There it sat in all of its Hillbilly glory with a pitched tin roof and wood-paneled sides. I knew I was in for an entertaining ride.

After a warm welcome from Banjo Billy himself, I settled into an overstuffed plaid armchair at the front of the bus, “the best seat in the house,” according to Georgis. There really isn’t a bad seat in the house, though. Georgis has removed all but a few of the original bus benches and replaced them with comfy vintage armchairs and several horse saddles, adding to the hominess of the bus.

Georgis got the tour rolling with the story of three suicides, all committed in the same room at the Hotel Boulderado. From there, the bus traveled down Pearl Street, making stops at several historic homes, each with its own bit of history and haunting ghost story. The tour also made stops at Boulder Creek, the Boulder History Museum, the Boulder Theater and Macky Auditorium on the University of Colorado campus, where a gruesome murder was committed in the 1960s.

We listened as Georgis told us about a disgruntled 46-year-old Boy Scout’s ghost; the ghost who warned a new homeowner to “Get out!” and the ghost of a wrongly hanged man seen swinging from the trees by Boulder Creek. Throughout the tour, Georgis entertained us with tidbits of history and personal anecdotes, including how he became known as Banjo Billy.

“I got tired of working for a living,” he joked. He said traveling through Europe, largely by bus, inspired him to start his own business offering bus tours of Boulder, “Colorado style.” In 2005, he quit the corporate world, bought a used school bus on eBay and serendipitously met a welder/engineer who helped him convert his newly purchased school bus into what he thought would look like a log cabin, but instead manifested itself as a Hillbilly shack. The logs that Georgis wanted to put on the sides of the bus turned out to be too heavy, so he used an old wooden fence instead. After the work was complete, a friend said, “I’ve got bad news for you, John. This doesn’t look like a log cabin; it looks more like a Hillbilly shack. Are you Banjo Billy?” And Banjo Billy’s Bus Tours was born.

Georgis didn’t miss a beat during the 90-minute tour, keeping the crowd amused with his charismatic personality, infectious laugh and captivating stories. He even kept the toddler on board interested, which is no easy feat.

By the end of the tour, I think everyone on board was looking for a ghost to appear at the window of any given building or house. That’s the power of Banjo Billy’s ghost tours.

Ghosts of Boulder Tours start, Fridays at 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2 and 4 p.m.

Adults, $20; seniors, $16; children (5-12). $10; children under 5, free. Banjo Billy also gives Ghost, Crime & History Tours of Boulder on the weekends; see website for a complete schedule. www.banjobilly.com

He would stop the bus in front of a building, start a story and then abruptly say that: "But if you do come for the full tour, You will learn the full story ." What? Please, dont start a story with a single intention of saying we can't know the ending until we come back for your tour. Thats just... no. Otherwise, a fun experience.

Starting!

I've done this twice now. Loved each time, and always make my family do it with me when they get into town. It's a great way to Show off boulder and get many laughs in. This is not your average borring tour experience. 10/10 would recommend. I've done during snow in December and August. Snow and sun. Do it!

Ahhh I seriously had so much fun on this Magic School Bus ride--I meaaan Banjo Billy's Bus that took some riders and I on a 90-minute tour of Boulder, CO. The inside of the bus is decorated beautifully and you can bring drinks and light bites along for your ride which is an awesome perk. Our driver was really funny and engaging; he narrated as he was driving but also made a few stops along the way to tell us some really awesome (and sometimes creepy) stories specific to each stop. People on the Boulder streets are very familiar with and love this bus (it's been around for 12 years) so we were often greeted with waves/cheers from outside the bus which was a fun way to interact with the locals. Although I have been to Boulder many times, I learned (and saw) so many new and interesting things while on this bus. Apparently there are themed bus tours depending on the season (i.e ghost tours for Halloween) which sounds pretty cool but all in all, this is a perfect way to see CO and definitely a must for locals and visitors alike !

This is our second fall in Boulder and our second ghost tour. It's so much fun! This time there was a toddler who started to get fussy about 3/4 through. Not sure why anyone would bring a baby on a 90 minute bus tour but whatever. Our guide Glenn was awesome. We've done the history tour, but since Halloween is our favorite holiday this tour is a must. Kudos. And yes, I recommend getting there early as seats fill up quickly.

This was a fun tour! Patrick was out tour guide and did a great job of being informative and fun to listen to. It seems they (the tour guides) have a script they have to stick to, which is good for consistency, but can offer a few more 'punny' jokes than you really want. That being said, the information was great and I learned a lot. I didn't quite know what to expect in terms of the type of history we would be exposed to and depending on the kind of information you care about learning your results may vary. I would have liked to hear a bit more about the areas we drove through, their names, and the types of vibes each had. As someone totally new to Boulder I never knew where we were and would have liked some more local insider information, but again, that's just my preference. We learned a lot about the history and heritage of the town, all of which I didn't know. From how it was founded, to some of the prominent names and places. I feel like we saw and heard a lot in 90 minutes. There is quite a tilt towards ghost stories and people dying (as they tend to do), and I suppose this has helped to inspire and shape the town, so it is probably all quite relevant and topical based on the town itself. We had a full bus, and there was a good selection of folks from all over the world, though most were from the U.S. The bus was right on time, and our tour left and was on schedule the whole way. I feel like I got to know a lot more about Boulder, and probably more than some local knows. I would love to see a 'locals' tour where we hit the popular spots and the off the track spots where good parks are, favorite local eats, funky suburban zones, etc. But I suppose I can use Yelp for that :) All in all I had a really great time and it was a fantastic way to see and hear about Boulder. For the price of $24/ticket I don't see how you can better spend your money for 90 minutes. Again, it's lighthearted and Patrick made sure to keep the stories coming as well as be easy to listen to without sound droll, too loud, or annoying. Just the right balance. Thanks Patrick!

A wonderful way to see downtown Boulder! I was visiting my daughter from California and she booked 2 tickets for us. Patrick was our guide and he was awesome! Entertaining and informative! We got to see historic neighborhoods with beautiful homes as well as the Flatirons, My favorite part was watching all the people watching us drive by in awe of this cool bus and waving to us as we hollered YEEHAW back!

Banjo Billy's saved the (Sun)day a few weeks ago. I had visitors in town for a long weekend who aren't into copious amounts of physical activity or day drinking. What do you do with people like that? Take them on a historical tour of Boulder, of course. Purchasing tickets online was easy, anyone with a smart phone can do it. $22-23/person isn't so bad if you understand the value of the experience = 90 minutes on a hippie bus where you don't have to do a lot of talking is worth it to me. Sit back, look out the window and learn a little bit. The BB Boulder bus tour picks up guests at Hotel Boulderado, a historical landmark in itself. While you wait to be picked up, have a cocktail at the bar. It's the perfect setting for an afternoon of reveling in the good ol' days. Patrick was our guide and he had just enough Dad jokes to last the entire ride. He also had plenty of informational nuggets about the Boulder area to share with the group. A nice balance of humor & history together under one psychedelic roof. I especially enjoyed the part of the tour where we drove by the Celestial Seasonings field and got a panoramic view of the Boulder area. Even on a cloudy, rainy day it was picturesque. 90 minutes pretty much flew by, which is a good sign. I've done the Denver Banjo Billy tour and enjoyed this experience much more. If someone was looking for a recommendation on a unique activity to partake with out of town guests, this would top my list.

Photo of Kelly H.

We had such a great time on the history tour! I was a little bummed out that it happened to be snowing when we had booked our tour, but the windows on the bus kept the inside nice and warm. The snow didn't make a difference as far as comfort, but there were a 1 or 2 things that we couldn't see because of the visibility. The interior is so unique with a huge tapestry on the ceiling and the seats aren't normal bus seats - they are very comfortable! Glen was our guide and he was really funny and kept the tour interesting. I've been living here for 4 years, so before the tour I was kind of doubtful that I'd like it. But I ended up LOVING it! I learned things I had no idea about and left knowing a lot more about my town. Be sure to bring cash to tip your guide!

This was a super fun history tour of Boulder! As a Boulder resident, We had a great time learning about all historical facts and tales about our town. I'd be interested to check out their brewery tours and ghost tours as well. This is definitely something I would encourage my family to do while visiting from out of town.

Banjo Billy's Bus Tour: History, Mystery And Bad Jokes

As Banjo Billy drives to one of seven anchor sites that make up the 100-minute tour, he tells crime, ghost and historical stories about buildings along the way.

The rambling, funky ride called Banjo Billy's Bus Tours, in Boulder, Colo., is equal parts history, crime stories and comedy. It's all woven together by John Georgis -- better known as Banjo Billy -- in a playful, "choose your own adventure" style.

The group wants crime, so he points to a bank on the left -- Boulder's oldest continuous bank.

But they're not here for the views -- they're here for a story about a dumpster.

Absolutely unique sightseeing / ghost tour

It took me a little bit of time to get to the bus, and the company is small enough that when I arrived there were only about 5 people on the bus. The bus waited for me and even called me to make sure I was near. The term asked us if we wanted a historical tour or a ghost tour? Since we were such a small group and we were equally split, we got both. The bus itself is a recycled school bus, that has been decorated with split lumber on the outside to make it look like a rolling log cabin. Inside, you are met with a variety of seats, to include recliners and couches. The only negative I had, is the windows need to be a little more clean both inside and out because the son was perfect to catch all the guard and make it a little bit harder to see outside. The length of the tour, and the historical knowledge was well worth the time. I loved it. Great for groups.

We booked this up at $23 and change per ticket for 4 p.m On the day we booked. We picked the seat of death at the back of the bus and it is truly uncomfortable , perhaps not as uncomfortable as the horse saddle seat that one young lady had to take on the 1 1/2 hour tour . All the seating in this old colourful seated bus is to say the least very varied . The tour makes the post with a full on lively commentary from in our case Patrick of what passes for historical tour of Boulder , mostly very far fetched ghost stories of old residents of the town , peppered with many jokes which as a Brit's we did not all get .HOWEVER, if you can enjoy all that with the induced fun for a 1 1/2 hour trip give it a go , we did ( I think )

We booked a private tour for a birthday party and had a blast. The tour guide was well informed and the atmosphere was fun.

Had a fun time on this tour. We had the sofa of death in the back of bus. Bad choice. Very bumpy, but fun. A little corny, but fun. Would not do more than once, but fun.

We had a friend's college-aged daughter visit for the long weekend and we were looking for a fun activity. Having lived in the Boulder area for over 35 years, my husband and I thought we had a pretty good grasp of sites and the history. Our driver/guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. We saw places of interest in Boulder and learned some of the history - things to which we would never have been exposed without going on the tour. If you're from out of town, it's probably helpful to have some Boulderites with you to explain some of the nuances. Good value for the cost. Our visitor enjoyed it as much as we did. A fun way to spend 90 minutes seeing things in Boulder that you likely won't walk or drive by in the future without sharing the new stories you have learned.

I have been on other musical tours in Memphis and Nashville. Don't expect the same. The music was hard to hear and from an I phone. The tour was not that great. The guid was good but not that much material to warrant the price.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
