How to get to Hahei:  Auckland to Hahei is just over two hours by car. From October to April, visitors to Cathedral Cove should leave their vehicle at the Park & Ride parking lot at the entrance to Hahei and catch the shared shuttle into town, where many kayak tours start. Go Kiwi  buses to Hahei run from downtown Auckland, also stopping to pick up passengers at Auckland Airport. 

See 19th-century heritage in Coromandel Town

Why go? Railway ride and forest adventures

Heritage 19th-century buildings reinforce the gold-mining history of Coromandel Town, discovered nearby at Driving Creek in 1852. Now the verdant valley incorporates the quirky narrow-gauge Driving Creek Railway  – with views all the way back to Auckland from the "Eyefull Tower" – and an exciting zip line swooping through a stand of regenerating native forest.

How to get to Coromandel Town:  Driving from Auckland to Coromandel Town takes around 2½ hours, but an alternative day trip option is to catch the ferry from downtown Auckland with Fullers360 . The journey across the Firth of Thames takes two hours, and incorporates a 15-minute minibus transfer to Coromandel Town. Transfers covering the short distance to Driving Creek are also available.

Stroll the trails of Tiritiri Matangi

Why go? Native birdlife on an island sanctuary

Venture across the Hauraki Gulf to this predator-free bird sanctuary. Tiritiri Matangi’ s avian superstars are the squat and quizzical ​​takahē, a flightless bird found only on the island, in fenced predator-free sanctuaries, and in the most remote wilderness areas of New Zealand’s South Island. Strolling on the Tiritiri Matangi’s bush and beach trails may also reveal up to 30 other bird species.

How to get to Tiritiri Matangi:  Catch the ferry from downtown Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi with Fullers360. Fullers’ other island day-trip destinations from Auckland include Waiheke Island and  Rangitoto Island .

Why go? Wine, beaches, and fine dining

Auckland’s island of wine is a favorite escape for city locals, drawn to Waiheke’s vineyard restaurants and a Mediterranean-style microclimate that’s equal parts southern Europe and southern hemisphere. How to get to Waiheke Island:  Catch the passenger ferry with Fullers360 from downtown Auckland, and then use the convenient 50A and 50B bus services from Auckland Transport to get around the island. You’ll need to buy a stored value AT HOP card to use on the bus. Car ferries with Sealink leave from central Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter and Half Moon Bay in east Auckland.

Have a beachfront meal in Waihi 

Why go? Gold-mining history and clifftop walking

Towering Phoenix palms and stately buildings line Waihi’s main street, a legacy of the quiet Waikato town’s gold-flecked past. Explore the region’s lustrous history at the award-winning Gold Discovery Centre , join a tour to learn about the sprawling Martha Mine, or divert to nearby Waihi Beach and tackle the Orokawa Bay walk high above the beach’s surf-trimmed arc. A late lunch or early dinner at Flatwhite 's beachfront location is recommended.

How to get to Waihi: It’s a drive of 1¾ hours from Auckland to Waihi, and then a further 15 minutes to Waihi Beach. InterCity buses linking Auckland to Tauranga stop at Waihi, but travelers then need to catch Bayhopper’s number 85 bus service from Waihi to Waihi Beach (Tuesday and Thursday only), or arrange taxi transport with Waihi Cabs .

The Perfect 3-Day Auckland Itinerary

Wondering how to spend 3 days in Auckland?

You’re in for a fun few days in New Zealand’s largest city.

I’ve lived in Auckland for 20 years. It’s where we live, work and play. So I’ve put my in-depth knowledge of the city to good use and put together the perfect 3-day Auckland itinerary. 

From popular attractions and cultural experiences to beaches and outdoor activities, there’s an incredible number of things to do in Auckland. I’ve mixed a few of the tourist things together with the cultural activities and some outdoorsy stuff, so you can experience all the different sides of the city.

If you’d rather skip some of the activities I’ve listed, that’s no problem because I’ve included options for each day so you can choose what works best for you.

It covers options whether you have a car or prefer to explore on foot and avoid the traffic and costly parking. Either way, you can use it as a guide to help you plan how to spend your time in Auckland.

Your 3-Day Auckland Itinerary

Three days is an ideal amount of time to spend in Auckland .

You can see a lot of the top sights, and it’s a great start to a longer New Zealand road trip .

If it rains, we’ve got a complete guide to the best indoor activities in Auckland that you can use to swap anything out if you need to.

Day 1: Top Auckland Attractions

Morning: sky tower.

The Sky Tower is an iconic landmark and usually one of the first things visitors want to do in Auckland. It’s part of the SkyCity Entertainment Complex which includes a casino, two hotels, several restaurants and a theater. We recommend heading straight up the tower which is open daily from 9:30am.

There are a few ways to spend your time at Sky Tower:

Enjoy 360-degree views of Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf from the observation decks and have a coffee in the café.

If you’re looking for a thrill, you can bungee jump off the platform of the 53rd Floor, or do the SkyWalk experience where you walk around the outside of the tower’s pergola 192 meters (630 feet) above ground. Don’t worry you’ll be securely fastened to safety lines.

There are also a couple of tours inside the SkyCity Complex that I really enjoyed, each tour takes 1.5 hours:

Weta Workshop Unleashed – A fully immersive and interactive tour that takes you into the wacky world of movie making.

The All Blacks Experience – An interactive showcase of New Zealand’s national rugby teams, including the famous All Blacks.

Info: General admission to the Sky Tower starts from $36 per adult / $18 per child.

Location: Corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, Auckland

For lunch, the best places to eat near Sky Tower are the Federal Delicatessen for American style diner food or Depot Eatery for fresh seasonal New Zealand food .

Afternoon: Visit a Museum

Museums are a great way to learn about the city’s history and culture and Auckland has a  few to choose from. I recommend visiting whichever museums interest you the most. It’s a good idea to book tickets in advance, though. They all have a café on site to stop for lunch if you decide not to eat at the Sky Tower.

The Art Gallery and Maritime Museum are both a 10-minute walk from Sky Tower and the Auckland Museum and MOTAT are a 10-minute drive from Sky Tower.

Plan to spend around 2-3 hours at whichever museum you choose.

Option #1: Auckland Art Gallery (Toi o Tāmaki)

An impressive collection of over 16,000 works of art housed in a beautiful Chateau-style building from the 19th century. I especially enjoyed the Māori portraits dating back to the 10th century. Each display tells the story of the person in the portrait. 

Afterward, you can take a stroll around Albert Park, located next to the museum.  It’s a small park with walking paths through ancient trees, a water fountain and colorful flowers in the Spring.

I nfo:  Open daily 10am-5pm; entry is currently free for both New Zealand residents and international visitors (there used to be a fee for international guests).

Location: Wellesley Street East (near Albert Park), Auckland CBD

Option #2: New Zealand Maritime Museum (Hui Te Ananui A Tangaroa)

Located near Auckland’s waterfront, the Maritime Museum has a collection of over 100 boats and ships plus exhibits that cover everything from early Polynesian voyagers to modern-day yachting.

My favorite thing about this museum is that you can take a ride around the harbor on one of their heritage vessels. Sailings cost extra but include entry into the museum.

Location: Viaduct (Corner Quay & Hobson Street), Auckland

Option #3: Auckland Museum (Tāmaki Paenga Hira)

An extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits that covers everything from Māori culture to the country’s involvement in World War I and II. 

There is a Māori Cultural Performance that I highly recommend if it’s your first time visiting New Zealand . It tells the story of Aotearoa through Māori song, the poi dance and the spine-tingling haka. Performances take place twice a day and tickets cost extra, but it’s easily one of the best things to do in Auckland .

The Auckland Museum is about a 30-minute walk (some of it uphill) from the city center, or you can take the Green Link bus to get here if you don’t have a car.

Option #4: Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT)

This museum is a great option for families and one of the best activities to do with kids in Auckland . There are indoor and outdoor exhibits across two spacious locations with a tram linking the sites. Exhibits include planes, trains, automobiles and the evolution of technology with lots of interactive displays for kids.

Location: 805 Great North Road, Western Springs, Auckland

Late Afternoon/Evening: Sunset at Mt Eden

Mount Eden is a suburb of Auckland and home to a dormant volcano. It’s the highest natural point in Auckland with stunning panoramic views over the city.

It’s a 15-minute drive from the city center or you can take the bus. You can park in the small parking lot (or have a taxi drop you off) at the base and walk up to the top which takes around 20 minutes. You can also find parking along the side streets nearby if the parking lot is full.

The volcano is covered in grass and has a walking track around the perimeter of the crater. We often bring a blanket and sometimes a picnic to watch the sunset over the city. 

Sunset will depend on the time of year you are visiting, being much later in summer. If this is the case for you, feel free to have dinner first then head up Mount Eden.

For a local experience, head to Gina’s Italian Kitchen in Mt Eden Village for dinner, or you can head back into the city center (Auckland CBD as it’s referred to locally).

Where to Eat in Auckland CBD

For casual dining, I love White & Wongs for flavorful ‘East meets West’ cuisine on the waterfront. Or head to Burger Burger (located in Commercial Bay) for arguably Auckland’s best burgers. There’s also Rein & Pour located on the ground floor of Commercial Bay for a mix of casual and nice.

For upscale dining, there’s Amano for rustic Italian (the burrata is a must-try), there’s The Grove , an award-winning fine dining restaurant with exceptional contemporary New Zealand cuisine and wine pairings (definitely worth it!), and Peter Gordon’s The Sugar Club , a chic restaurant located on the 53rd floor of the Sky Tower.

For seafood restaurants with a view, try Oyster & Chop in the Viaduct, or FISH Restaurant in the Hilton Hotel.

If you’ve saved room for dessert, head to Miann in Britomart, a chic dessert bar where they make everything from scratch, even the chocolate. Decadent is an understatement. 

Day 2: Auckland’s Islands & Waterfront

Morning: ferry to the island of your choice.

Did you know there are a handful of islands just off the coast of Auckland that you can book a ferry to visit? Each one offers something different. I’m recommending a few options so whether you’re into food and wine, adventure and hiking or nature and conservation, you can choose the one that fits you best.

You can catch the ferry for each of these options from the downtown Ferry Terminal which is walkable from most hotels in the city center.

Option #1: Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is a popular destination for wine lovers and beachgoers. The island is covered in beautiful vineyards and secluded beaches. There are over 30 wineries and cellar doors around the island that produce some of New Zealand’s top wines.

The ferry takes 35-40 minutes to get there. The ferry boards by your place in line so I recommend getting to the ferry terminal early. Then spend the day (or half day) exploring the island’s wineries, beaches and art galleries. You can take the Hop on Hop off bus , the local public bus, taxis or rent an e-bike or car to get around the island on your own.

You can also book a wine tour , which is my preference. They’ll pick you up at the Waiheke ferry terminal and take you to a selection of the island’s wineries. There is even a tour that includes ziplining over the vineyards.

I’ve enjoyed several tours to Waiheke Island, including this ziplining tour . Overall, they are good value and a convenient way to experience the island as a full day or half day trip.

I particularly like this Waiheke Island Gourmet Food and Wine Tour tour because you get to sample a selection of local food along with some of the island’s best wineries.

Option #2: Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island is one of Auckland’s most iconic landmarks, and a great place to explore if you love the outdoors. This volcanic island sits just off the coast of Auckland and has a range of hiking trails and lava caves, plus stunning views of the city and Hauraki Gulf.

After the 30-minute ferry ride to get there, follow the Summit Track past lava fields and a Pohutukawa forest on the way to the summit. It’s a decent climb so expect to work up a sweat!

You can book ferry tickets from Fullers or take a guided tour, which will give you insight into its history and geology. If you’re feeling adventurous, this kayaking tour and climb to the summit of the volcano is the way to go.

Most visitors spend half a day at Rangitoto. You can bring a packed lunch to eat at the summit (be sure to take all trash with you when you leave), or have lunch when you get back to the waterfront. We like Dr Rudis for craft beer and pizza!

Option #3: Tiritiri Matangi Island

Tiritiri Matangi is a special island sanctuary located in the Hauraki Gulf and one of the world’s most successful conservation projects. The island is filled with wildlife including rare New Zealand native birds that you won’t see on the mainland.

Many visitors don’t know about Tiritiri until they arrive and even then, it’s still unknown to a great extent. But as a nature and animal lover it’s one of my favorite places.

This is a full day tour because it’s a longer ferry ride to get there, 80 minutes each way. Once you arrive, you’ll have plenty of time to explore this remote island paradise.

There are walking trails around the island that take you along the coast to hidden beaches and over wooden boardwalks through the forest where you’re bound to run into the resident bird life.

I have a soft spot for the takahē, once thought to be extinct, even though they tried to steal my lunch out of my backpack!

Here are our top tips for visiting Tiritiri Matangi Island:

• Bookings are limited so be sure to book well in advance.
• You can swim or snorkel at the sandy beaches – bring a swimsuit and towel.
• There aren’t any amenities on the island – bring a packed lunch, plenty of water and sunscreen.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes, a sunhat and sunglasses.
• Be sure to take all belongings including any garbage with you when you leave.

Afternoon: Explore Auckland’s Waterfront

If you opted for a half day tour or have some time left, you can spend the rest of the afternoon or evening exploring Auckland’s waterfront which has three main precincts, all within easy walking distance from the ferry terminal.

Britomart: A mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and designer boutiques lining a cobbled walkway covered in fairy lights. It opens to Takutai Square – a green space that hosts events throughout the year. You can check out events on the Britomart website . Try Hokey Pokey ice cream at Giapo, located nearby on Gore Street. It’s over the top and delicious!

Viaduct Harbour: Known as the hospitality hub, the Viaduct is a lively area around the marina filled with bars and restaurants. It’s a great place to enjoy a drink or have a meal with a stunning view. Some of the popular bars include Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co , Parasol & Swing and HQ . It’s a popular area to experience Auckland’s nightlife.

Wynyard Quarter/Silo Park: Located across the pedestrian bridge from the Viaduct, this precinct was once used by the timber trade and for bulk chemical storage. Now it’s a thriving neighborhood with bars, restaurants, and a playground for the kids. There’s a Night Market every Sunday from 4pm.

Westhaven Promenade

For an extended walk you can continue past the Silo’s and follow the signs to the Westhaven Promenade , a picturesque 3.1-kilometer (2-mile) path connecting Wynyard Quarter to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. A return walk from Silo Park will take about an hour to complete.

The walk leads to a boardwalk along the marina with fantastic views of Rangitoto Island, Auckland City and the Harbour Bridge. Being that we live in the city, this is our local walk and one we do most weekends when the weather is good. The views never get old. 

For dinner, you might like to consider making a reservation at Sails Restaurant located along the Westhaven Promenade. It’s the top rated restaurant for Central Auckland on TripAdvisor and has been recognized among the top 20 fine-dining restaurants in the world for its contemporary surf and turf menu. 

For something more casual, stop in Swashbucklers for a seafood platter and a cold beer.

Day 3: Beaches, Shopping & Marine Life

Morning: go to the beach.

Auckland has some incredible beaches from wild black sand beaches on the west coast to popular swimming beaches on the east coast. Here are two that I really like and visit the most often. 

I recommend getting there early during the summer months to ensure you get a parking space. 

Option #1: Mission Bay

Mission Bay beach is a popular swimming beach, a 15-minute drive from Auckland CBD . It’s close enough to take a taxi or Uber if you don’t have a car, or you can take a bus.

The water is generally calm and there aren’t any lifeguards. The white sand beach is backed by a large park with a playground and stunning views out to Rangitoto Island. 

Across the street from the beach is Mission Bay Village, with lots of restaurants that have outdoor seating, and a good place to stop for lunch. Bodrum Kitchen has fabulous Mediterranean food, and I also really like the Bald Eagle Diner for its American themed diner food.

There is a scenic walking path along the waterfront that connects from Mission Bay to Kohimarama Beach and St Heliers Beach, and a little further along is Achilles Point – a rocky point on the headland with a raised platform and excellent views over Auckland Harbour. Just be aware Achilles Point is above a small, secluded nudist beach and you may see nude bathers from the lookout point.

The walk from Mission Bay to Achilles Point will take about an hour (one-way), but you can go as far as you are comfortable. It’s completely exposed so bring plenty of water and sun protection.

Option #2: Piha Beach

Piha Beach is a black sand wilderness beach on Auckland’s west coast, about a 50-minute drive from central Auckland, and a popular beach for surfing.

The landscape is rugged and breathtaking with fine black sand and wild waves. It was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, contributing to its unique environment.

You can take a walk up the iconic Lions Rock for spectacular views over the beach and visit the nearby hiking trails. A short drive from Piha Beach is an easy walk through the native forest to Karekare falls.

The sea is rougher here and there can be dangerous rips so it’s important to stay between the flags and follow the instructions of lifeguards if you plan on swimming.

For lunch, head to Brothers Beer & Juke Joint BBQ at Piha Beach or you can bring your own.

It’s fairly remote and you’ll need to be confident driving a narrow winding road to get there. There aren’t any buses and taxis or Uber would be very expensive. If you prefer not to drive or don’t have a car you may like to consider taking a tour to Piha Beach.

Afternoon: Devonport, Shopping & Marine Life

You have a few different options for how to spend your afternoon, including the waterfront if you didn’t get there on Day 2.

You can also use these as alternatives to swap out with any of the activities we’ve covered so far.  

Option #1: Devonport

Devonport is a quaint coastal town located on Auckland’s North Shore, filled with nice cafes, boutique shops and art dealerships. The best thing is you can take a 12-minute ferry ride to Devonport from the downtown Auckland Ferry Terminal.

Explore the village, stop at Devonport Chocolates for a treat, walk along the promenade to the historic defense site of North Head, or climb up Mount Victoria for awesome views. You can also explore the village on a segway tour or take one up to Mount Victoria. 

Option #2: Ponsonby

Ponsonby is a trendy residential neighborhood in the city known for shopping and dining. It’s a 30-minute walk from the CBD (up a big hill). I recommend hopping in a taxi or Uber to get there if it’s a hot day. 

Ponsonby Road is lined with boutique shops, upscale cafes and small galleries to explore. It’s great for some retail therapy, grabbing a coffee or having some food.

In fact, Ponsonby has an amazing food scene, from gourmet food trucks to gastropubs and bistros. Personal favorites include The Blue Breeze Inn and Bedford Soda & Liquor which has a nice outdoor area, both located in Ponsonby Central.

Option #3: Dolphin Explorer Cruise

Enjoy a whale and dolphin safari cruise from downtown Auckland. A half-day cruise takes you on a purpose-built catamaran with expert guides. You’ll have a chance to see dolphins, whales, seals and rare seabirds all year round in Auckland, and even larger groups of whales in winter. And if you don’t see any marine mammals during your cruise, you can go again for free!

In fact, if you decide to book this tour, you may want to swap it out with one of the activities on Day 1 so you have the option to go again on Day 2 or Day 3 if needed.

Option #4: Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium

Adults and kids will both enjoy this aquarium where you can walk under the water through glass bubble walkways. 

Kelly Tarlton’s is home to a wide variety of sea life including penguins. There are a range of interactive experiences, including behind-the-scenes tours, snorkeling with sharks, and penguin encounters.

They also have talks and feedings throughout the day, providing insight into the animals and their habitats. You’ll need to arrive at the time you booked but can stay as long as you like (within opening hours of course). It’s about a 10-minute drive from the city center to Kelly Tarlton’s, along the same road you would take to Mission Bay Beach.

How to Get Around in Auckland

Getting from the airport to city center (cbd).

If you’ve arrived at Auckland International Airport and don’t have a car, the best way to get from the airport to the city is by taxi, bus, or shuttle. The journey generally takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.

Taxi/Uber: Some taxi companies have a fixed fare rate to the CBD. Expect to pay around $70 to $80 for a fixed fare with Alert Taxis and Auckland Co-op Taxis (Corporate Cabs is more expensive). Uber is normally cheaper unless there is a surge in peak times. 

SkyDrive: An express bus service between the airport and SkyCity. A one-way ticket costs $18 per adult. The bus stops right outside both the international and domestic terminals.

Super Shuttle: A shared transfer in a minivan with one-way bookings starting at $36 for one person plus $8 for each extra person in the same group.

Getting Around Auckland

Renting a Car

Renting a car will give you the most flexibility for getting around, especially if you want to venture further outside the city center, but be mindful that it can cost a lot to park at your hotel and the traffic can be a pain.

Public Transport

You can also get around by bus and ferry. You’ll need to purchase an AT HOP Card , a reusable prepaid travel card that you can use on trains, ferries (excluding Waiheke) and buses around Auckland.

Cash can be used to purchase a paper ticket for train and ferry travel but buses no longer accept cash as payment. Although you can’t use the AT Hop Card to pay for the ferry to Waiheke Island, you can use it on the public buses on the island. You can find bus and ferry timetables here .

Taxis and Uber

For  2–3 days in Auckland, taxis or Uber are the most efficient way to get to places around the city that you can’t walk or take a ferry to. Just be sure to agree on the basis of the fare for taxis before you get in.

17 Exciting Auckland Day Trips: Nearby Adventures Within 2 Hours of CBD

Auckland, the city of sails, is a starting point for many visitors as well as being home to nearly one-third of New Zealand’s population. While there are plenty of things to keep one busy in the city, Auckland day trips to nearby destinations offer both a change of scenery and a lot of fun.

We are amongst the nearly 1.7 million people who call Auckland home. And while we love the city, Auckland day trips are often the quick getaway that we need.

Popular day trips from Auckland range from glowworms to geysers, from beaches to caves, and from Māori culture to hobbit holes. We make our Auckland getaways exciting. While many are located in the Auckland region, a number of our favourite places to go are in the Waikato.

While there are plenty of options, we focus on our favourites, which we believe are the best day trips from Auckland. They are all within a two-hour drive from the city. It’s the area highlighted in this map:

First, let us tempt you with some Auckland fun

Auckland Day Trips

Looking for a day-long escape from Auckland, one that's far enough away to feel like somewhere else, but not so far that you can't easily do it in a day? Here are our favourites which include popular day trips from Auckland as well as some that are better known only by locals (like me).

Waiheke Island

An easy ferry ride from Auckland CBD or Devonport, Waiheke Island is a fabulous subtropical getaway. Many of the lush green rolling hills provide the ideal climate for wine grapes, which accounts for 30 or so wineries on this island.

We like it because it instantly feels like a holiday. Whether we enjoy a meal at a winery or just hand out at one of the several great beaches, we are happy. Of course, if we are feeling more adventurous, there is a massive zipline or an old military reserve to explore.

Muriwai or Piha Beach

Head to the west coast if you are looking for bigger surf waves, black sand beaches, or the nearest subtropical rainforest. Piha is best known from the former TV show Piha Rescue for its wild surf.

Every year (August to March), we get to  Muriwai  to see the large colony of 1,200 Australian gannets that fly over to breed, to swim at the beach, or just enjoy the native bush. 

Either beach, we are never disappointed. And when we are feeling more energetic, there is the Te Henga Walkway to Bethels Beach.

Tiritiri Matangi Island

Tiritiri Matangi is a day of exploration, hiking, and birds. This open bird sanctuary island is just a 75-minute ferry ride from Auckland. Tiritiri Matangi is a protected island paradise thought to be one of the world’s most successful conservation projects.

It's an all-day activity that we love, with a morning ferry heading out from Auckland or Gulf Harbour to the island and an afternoon return. We have seen and photographed some interesting birdlife here.

Any of the Islands of the Hauraki Gulf 

Although there are over 50 islands in the Hauraki, only a handful are accessible without a private boat. Two of our favourites are mentioned already: Tiritiri Matangi and Waiheke.

Two other popular options are Rangitoto and Kawau. Rangitoto Island is Auckland's largest and youngest volcanic field, as well as being home to the country's largest pohutukawa forest.

Kawau was purchased in 1862 by then Governor of New Zealand Sir Geroge Grey. He brought with him interesting animals, and we can still find wallabies there today.

Waipu Caves

Just under a two-hour drive to the north will bring you to the provincial town of Waipu. Here we hit the beach, hike, and the highlight - see glow worms in the caves.

While there are a variety of things to do in Waipu , the caves are our current favourite. Here, you have two great options: either the free DOC cave, where you will most likely get wet feet and possibly a bit dirty, or take a tour through a well-paved cave nearby.

Either way, you should see glow worms, but you will for sure on the tour.

Shakespear Park

Shakespear Park is one of 27 Auckland Regional Parks currently open to the public. Each is special for different reasons. At Shakespear, we enjoy multiple beaches, hours of hiking trails, campgrounds, cows, sheep, and it is an open bird sanctuary.

An award-winning park, it's a great place to relax or stretch your legs. It's just less than an hour's drive from Auckland at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and the closest of the regional park to our home.

Orewa Beach

An easy Auckland day trip, Orewa beach is 3km of golden sand and safe swimming nestled against a charming seaside community well known for its variety of cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

Only a 25-minute drive, it's also accessible by bus.

Riverhead Tavern

While one can easily drive to Riverhead from downtown in 30 minutes, I had loads of fun getting here on a 90-minute cruise along the river system leading out from Auckland. Reserve your Red Boats cruise to Riverhead here.

Once there, enjoy a meal at the Landing restaurant or a drink at the Portage, a neighbourhood bar. Best of all, if you can head here on a Sunday, you can enjoy live music at the Boat House.

Karangahake Gorge

Karangahake Gorge is a majestic mix of remnant goldfields and impressive nature. Once the site of New Zealand’s most lucrative gold strike, it is now a walking and hiking destination.

Swing bridges, former gold mine shafts, a historic cyanide treatment plant, and lush green forest led us to the gorge. Karangahake Gorge is a two-hour drive from the city and makes a great Auckland day trip. You can also reserve a day trip from Auckland with an eBike tour in Karangahake Gorge here .

Best known for its world-class themed Hamilton Gardens, there are actually a surprising number of cool things to do in Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest city.

A tea plantation, a regional museum, a bird park (where I had a ruru perch on my arm), and Riff Raff Square are a few of my favourites. Hamilton is 125 km southwest of Auckland.

Rural charm and relaxation, Cambridge is the ideal, off-the-beaten-path spot to relax and unwind.

Unless you hit a big sports weekend, as it's home for key rowing and cycling events. It's not too far from Hamilton, so if you are heading out for longer than just typical Auckland day trips, you might consider both.

Hobbiton Movie Set 

This is the Real Middle Earth. Hobbiton is a top destination for many Lord of the Rings  fans, and it's just under a two-hour drive.

Available by tour only, each two-hour tour of the 12-acre Hobbiton Movie set takes visitors to Hobbit Holes, the Old Mill, and the Double Arched Bridge.

We discover details about the movie set and how it was created. The tour concludes with a complimentary drink at The Green Dragon Inn. Hobbiton is as touristy as one would expect, yet movie fans love it.

Ngatea Water Gardens

Ngatea Water Gardens is an eclectic mix of humour interwoven throughout a beautiful water garden. It requires a sense of humour to appreciate it. We laughed quite a bit.

Also located here is Arthur's Canny Museum. This display of over 11,000 cans is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Ngatea Water Gardens is about an hour's drive from Auckland.

Auckland day trips a bit farther away

Personally, we prefer to spend at least a night, usually more when we head to any of the destinations below, but we live in New Zealand and therefore have endless time. While they are each more than 2 hours from the Auckland CBD, they all can be done in a day if that's all you have.

Raglan is 173 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hourss.

Raglan is a coastal beach town full of surprises. It's got a relaxed atmosphere and I thnk it is the perfect getaway, whether you surf or not.

Located on the west coast of the North Island, it's just a short drive from Hamilton, yet a world apart. With big waves and frequent wind, it's a haven for adrenaline rush, but also a great place to relax with a coffee or craft beer.

Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel is 173 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of two hours and twenty minutes.

Bushwalks, forest hikes, natural hot springs, beaches, and a rugged coastline are what attracted us to the Coromandel Peninsula.

If you only have one day, I would recommend digging your own ‘spa’ at the natural hot springs of Hot Water Beach (at low tide) and heading to Cathedral Cove. We like to spend a lot more time here.

Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves is 190 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hours and 51 minutes.

The caves are lit by thousands of phosphorescent lights from a species of glowworm found only in New Zealand (Arachnocampa luminosa). We haven't done this in a while, but the magic is the same every time.

Entry into the Waitomo Glowworm Caves is via a 45-minute guided tour. Starting on foot, admire stalagmites and stalactites before boarding a small boat and drifting through the glowworm grotto in near silence.

If you are more adventurous, one of the most popular things to do is black water rafting.

Blue Spring

Blue Spring is located in Putaruru, which is 187 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Home to the clearest waters on the North Island, the Blue Spring at Putaruru supplies 70% of New Zealand's bottled drinking water and is one of the most beautiful NZ locations I have ever seen.

Honestly, it's about the view and the photos, so click through and enjoy.

Bonus Destinations: Rotorua and Bay of Islands

Still possible for a long Auckland day trip, we strongly encourage you to spend at least a night in each of these two bonus destinations. Both Rotorua and the Bay of Islands are fabulous, but both are more than three hours in each direction from Auckland. 

We know some people recommend them, but we think they are just a bit too far for one day.

Auckland to Rotorua is 228 km, about three hours each way.

A geothermal wonderland and centre for Māori culture, Rotorua is also known for its extreme adventure options. Rotorua is like few other places on the planet and one of my favourite places to visit. If you have the time, spend at least a night here. There is more than enough to do in Rotorua to keep you busy.

If not, a visit to Te Puia will give you the highlights, including Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, erupting once or twice each hour. Te Puia also has bubbling mud pools, hot springs, silica formations, Kiwi birds, and the national schools of wood carving, weaving, stone, and bone carving.

Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands is a 232 km drive north of Auckland, with an over three-hour one-way drive time.

One of my favourite spots for a getaway, I think the Bay of Islands is a bit too far for a day trip. But if that is all you have, you will have to pick from all the things to do in Bay of Islands . If you haven’t been before, I would recommend Waitangi Treaty grounds and getting on a fast boat out to the hole in the rock.

Whether you have limited time or you just prefer to have someone do the driving, there are a couple of Auckland day tours we recommend:

Auckland day trip to Hobbiton & Hamilton Gardens

This all-day tour will head first to Hobbiton for a guided exploration of the shire where both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed. Then, enjoy lunch just outside the farm at the Shire’s Rest Café (lunch is an additional cost). Next, drive to Hamilton and spend time exploring the lovely Hamilton Gardens. Auckland day trip to Hobbiton & Waitomo caves

This one is ideal for people who prefer fully escorted tours, really want to see both Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves, and have only one day for this adventure. It travels first to the Hobbiton Movie Set, then enjoys lunch at The Shire’s Rest Café (a Kiwi-style cafe), before driving to the Glowworm caves in Waitomo.

Both destinations are seen with guided tours. Please note the travel times. You will spend nearly 2/3 of this trip in transit. Reserve your day trip to Hobbiton and Waitomo .

Tips for taking day trips from Auckland

• The weather is changeable and often unpredictable. It’s always a good idea in Auckland and the surrounding areas to dress in layers and bring a light rain jacket.
• If you are travelling in summer, bring sunscreen. The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica thins the atmosphere over New Zealand, making the sun that much more dangerous.
• Carry water and a small snack. Even if your tour includes meals, they may not happen when you are hungry.
• Bring a camera.
• If you have more time,  head north to the top of the island , or head south from  Auckland to the nations capital city .

There is so much to do from Auckland, Rhonda. We only spent a few days there before flying back to the US 2 years ago but I can see from your post how we need to do a few proper trips from there, when we finally return to NZ. The place dazzles. We loved Opotiki so much on the North Island and its well off of the beaten tourist path.

A visit to Hobbiton is a given, and we’ve read so much about Shakespear Park and Hamilton Gardens that they’re already on our wish list. Heading north to the Bay of Islands takes you along the coast road past the seaside villages of Orewa and Waiwera. Then its on to the township of Puhoi, New Zealand's only Bohemian settlement, then Warkworth and the harbour side city of Whangarei and the unique township of Kawakawa. Arriving into the sub tropical Bay of Islands you are greeted with bush clad hillsides dropping to golden sand beaches. Paihia is the main tourist centre in the bay and has a great beach side atmosphere.

Board your cruise and take in the stunning views as you glide out through the islands and along the Rakaumangamanga Peninsula to Cape Brett, where a historic lighthouse keeps watch over and Piercy Island/Motukōkako, or as it is popularly known as the Hole in the Rock. According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space. Keep an eye out for common and bottlenose dolphins, whales, and other marine life during your cruise, and have your camera ready as you get up close to the action. Stop off at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island where you have time to relax, take a walk, have a swim, or enjoy a bite to eat and drink from the on-site fully licensed café. The purpose-built catamaran is licensed by DOC (the Department of Conservation) for dolphin viewing and the crew has years of experience locating dolphins in these waters.

Looking for a way to light up your long weekend? From Matariki celebrations to an assortment of other events, here’s our selection of some of Tāmaki Makaurau’s best events to keep you, your whānau and friends entertained. There’s quirky comedy, whānau-friendly adventures, theatre made by young people and some made for young people, plus a couple of neat things to plan for later in the week and month.

1) Lights for Matariki - Various locations

For a bit of a DIY Matariki celebration, might we suggest a self-guided light tour of Tāmaki Makaurau? The central city is aglow with various light displays including Tūrama on Queen St, Lightpath Te Ara i Whiti, PWC (Quay St), the Sky Tower, Viaduct Harbour and the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Then venturing a little further afield, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Eden Park and Westfield Newmarket are all illuminated for Matariki. The piece de resistance is of course Auckland Harbour Bridge, which from 6pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday night this week will be displaying a five-minute Vector Lights show that you can view from locations around Auckland, including Maungawhau Mt Eden, Bayswater Marina, Silo Park, Takurunga Mt Victoria or anywhere you can get a good view of the bridge. Rug up and go light spotting with your friends, whānau or Tinder dates. Mānawatia a Matariki.

2) Five Go on an Adventure - Takapuna

Opening this Saturday with their always-festive gala performance is Tim Bray Theatre Company’s production of Five Go on an Adventure . Based on the classic Enid Blyton book series, The Famous Five , Bray has created a wonderfully whimsical story about four children and their dog, Timmy, who head off seeking an adventure and along the way uncover a mystery they simply must solve. Bray is a master at adapting classic stories for young audiences, keeping them engaged and giggling throughout. Like all their productions, the show is a very manageable 50-60 minutes long - perfect for wriggly bottoms and itchy feet - and they offer sensory-relaxed, audio-described and NZSL-interpreted performances so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the theatre. After Saturday’s opening gala, there will be school/ECE shows during the week, before two weeks of twice daily performances in the school holidays. If you want to be extra cute, pack yourselves a themed picnic with honey sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer to enjoy lakeside at Lake Pupuke before or after the show.

3) Ice skating at Aotea Square - Auckland CBD

Embrace winter’s hat and scarf-based fashion and head into town for ice skating merriment at Aotea Square. Now one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most popular winter traditions, the ice rink opens Matariki weekend and runs through until mid-August. This year there’s more on offer than just skating laps with your crush – possibly the Olympics’ most intriguing sport, curling, is coming, with a two-lane curling rink where teams of four can go head to head. Challenge your neighbours, colleagues, cousins or pals to a 25-minute curling battle and things are bound to get a bit silly. If traditional ice skating is more your speed, then you’ll enjoy the Student Nights, Skate and Date Nights and DJ on Ice Fridays. The Aotea Square Ice Rink is Auckland’s answer to Rockefeller Centre but just a short train or bus ride into to town away.

4) An Intimate Evening with Tabitha Booth - Auckland CBD

A wildly unique one-woman show opens Saturday night at Q Theatre called An Intimate Evening with Tabitha Booth . Created and performed by Melbourne-based comedian Frankie McNair, the slightly delusional, thoroughly outlandish character of Tabitha is a contemporary of Minelli, Streisand and Monroe. She’s a “heavily medicated lounge singer” who’s returning to the stage to share a lifetime of stories from old Hollywood. A Theatre Travels review says “If you miss it, I feel sorry for you” and while you may never have heard of that publication, we can all agree that’s probably the most emphatic thumbs-up a show could ever be honoured with. There are seven shows across the week in the upstairs Loft at Q Theatre, the perfect little space for an intimate evening of unhinged reminiscing.

5) Matariki at MOTAT - Western Springs

Looking for a way to entertain the tamariki and engage in Matariki celebrations this long weekend? Head down to MOTAT, where you can create and design your own whetū (star) using weaving, knot and lashing techniques while learning all about celestial navigation and kūmara harvesting in the newly opened Te Puawānanga science and technology centre. Grab a Matariki star trail map on arrival and take a tour around the museum to see what treasures you find along the way. In the Discovery Dome, learn all about solar tsunamis courtesy of a Tūhura Otago Museum exhibit which lets you get hands-on with magnets, a plasma ball and more. Oodles of learning wrapped in fun to be had at MOTAT this weekend.

6) Afloat: 20 Years After The Rise - Glen Eden

If you want to know what’s on the minds of young people today then Afloat: 20 Years After The Rise is a great place to start. This original musical is written by two teenagers - Samantha Hook, 18, and Harrison Maxwell, 17. It’s set in a future in which a nuclear plant malfunction has resulted in the rapid rising of sea levels and loss of all land on Earth. Survivors have created homes and empires on floating debris. In this post-apocalyptic world chaos ensues as a rebellion rises and friends become traitors - singing all the while. The musical features 17 young performers and 20 original songs, so if you’re worried teenagers these days just sit on their phones all day, this show proves just how much productivity and creativity the next generation is capable of. It opened Friday and has two performances on Saturday so get along and support the future Andrew Lloyd Webbers and Tim Minchins of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Plan Ahead: Mid-winter Christmas in Queenstown

If an ugly sweater party and some roast turkey isn’t quite living up to your mid-winter Christmas fantasies then maybe hopping a plane to Queenstown might do it? Ayrburn, the dreamy new food and wine hub in Arrowtown, is going all out for mid-winter Christmas, transforming into a winter wonderland for what they intend to be an annual celebration. There’s an ice skating rink, light displays and Christmas decorations aplenty. Throughout July, there’ll be a range of Christmas-themed activities and experiences to enjoy. So you can experience the hygge joys of a white Christmas without travelling halfway around the world.

Plan Ahead: The Tīwhas! A Matariki Spectacular - Auckland CBD

The Tīwhas! A Matariki Spectacular is the Matariki celebration/education you never knew you needed. Wellington takatāpui drag group, The Tīwhas, are performing a theatrical reimagining of Matariki at the Basement Theatre next week and it’s a must-see. These queens are much more than meticulously make-upped lip synchers, they have their own brand of performance that includes kapa haka, drag artistry and live vocals. Featuring Dame Jthan, Slay West, Pania and new recruit Huh? Mama!, ring in te tau hou Māori/the Māori new year with some fabulously flamboyant bilingual singing, storytelling and celebration.

Plan Ahead: Doc Edge Film Festival - Auckland CBD

Proving year after year that truth is stranger than fiction, often more affecting and thought-provoking too, the Doc Edge Film Festival launches in Auckland and Wellington on Wednesday. The Academy Awards-qualifying festival this year has an unprecedented 12 world premieres, including Sharko , a revealing film about the destructive life of rugby league player Mark Graham, made by his son; The Other Side , journalist Sean Langan’s window into the Russian side of the war on Ukraine; and Pistachio Wars , uncovering a dirty secret of the healthy snack industry in California. Films are screening at The Capitol Cinema and Auckland Central Library over 12 days so get yourself tickets to see at least one of these eye-opening films or better yet, get a five or 10 film pass and knock yourself out with true stories from all over the world.

Day 1 - Auckland to Pahia and a cruise to the famous Hole in the Rock

Heading north to the Bay of Islands takes you along the coast road past the seaside villages of Orewa and Waiwera. Then its on to the township of Puhoi, New Zealand's only Bohemian settlement, then Warkworth and the harbour side city of Whangarei and the unique township of Kawakawa. Arriving into the sub tropical Bay of Islands you are greeted with bush clad hillsides dropping to golden sand beaches. Paihia is the main tourist centre in the bay and has a great beach side atmosphere.

Board your cruise and take in the stunning views as you glide out through the islands and along the Rakaumangamanga Peninsula to Cape Brett, where a historic lighthouse keeps watch over and Piercy Island/Motukōkako, or as it is popularly known as the Hole in the Rock. According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space. Keep an eye out for common and bottlenose dolphins, whales, and other marine life during your cruise, and have your camera ready as you get up close to the action. Stop off at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island where you have time to relax, take a walk, have a swim, or enjoy a bite to eat and drink from the on-site fully licensed café. Day 3 - Explore historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds then return to Auckland

You will be transferred from your accommodation in Paihia to Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Waitangi is one of New Zealand's most historic sites where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the local Maori and the British Government. This two day pass allows you access to the Treaty of Waitangi Grounds and includes admission to the Te Kōngahu Museum and Te Rau Aroha Museum and a Maori Cultural performance. During your guided tour, you'll learn about the history of the treaty and discover the stories and events that shaped New Zealand. The cultural performance inside the carved meeting house includes waiata (singing), poi, a display of Maori weaponry and the haka - a war dance New Zealand is well known for.

You will be transferred from Waitangi Treaty Grounds to your accommodation in Paihia.

Leaving the magical Bay of Islands behind you head south on State Highway 1 back towards Auckland, the city of sails, the route takes you through Kawakawa, affectionately known as 'train town'. The farming regions of Wellsford and Warkworth accompany you the rest of the journey before passing through the suburbs of the North Shore and crossing the harbour bridge and into the heart of Auckland City.
