Getting There

Entry requirements.

All travelers between the U.S. and the Caribbean will be required to carry passports beginning January 1, 2007 as mandated by the United States Department of Homeland Security. In compliance with a new immigration law known as the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, all U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, whether traveling by air or sea, must provide a passport to enter or re-enter the U.S. for both vacation and business travel. A visa is not required for US Citizens to travel (up to a 6 month stay).  Foreign residents of the United States and all other foreign visitors not holding a US Passport must contact the appropriate government authorities to determine the entry and visa requirements.

We encourage you to begin the passport application processes early to avoid unexpected delays. Travelers should allow a minimum of six weeks between their application submission and receipt of passport. Passports can be expedited for an additional fee. Additionally, all visitors are required to travel with a roundtrip airline ticket for entry into Jamaica.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are not required unless you have visited one of the following countries in the past six weeks: Asia, Africa, Central & South America, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago. Departure Tax

Departure tax is now included with the cost of most airline tickets purchased in the United States for travel to Jamaica. Otherwise it is payable at the Jamaican airport upon departure and is around  $25 U.S. (JA $ 1000)- cash only. The departure tax is subject to change.

What to Wear

Lightweight, tropical clothing is best suited for Jamaica’s warm year-round climate. Pack your favorite shorts and swimwear for the beach and a light sweater, especially for winter vacations. Check with your resort for dress code requirements such as evening wear and jackets. Most, if not all, resort areas will have laundry and dry cleaning facilities, barbers and hairdressers. Most resort restaurants require long pants and a collared shirt for men and island casual for ladies when dining in the evening.

Banks & Currency

Nearly every type of International currency is accepted for exchange at the many banks, licensed cambios and bureaux de changes within the resort areas. Official exchange rates vary, so it might be a good idea to shop around before converting large amounts of cash. Many of Jamaica’s ATMs can be accessed with Visa, Mastercard, Cirus and Plus logo cards, and most vendors accept the major credit cards. Local banks are open island-wide throughout the day and are ready to provide credit card advances, traveler’s checks and other financial services.

An adult 18 years or older can bring the following duty-free items into Jamaica:

1.) Up to 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, or 1/2 pound of tobacco;

2.) One quart or one liter of spirits, cordials and wine;

3.) Six fluid ounces of perfumed spirits and 12 fluid ounces of toilet water.

Restricted incoming items include:

Fresh flowers, plants, honey, fruits, meats and vegetables (except canned), coffee in any form, firearms, explosives and dangerous drugs (including marijuana). Kosher foods require special documentation- Call the Jamaica Tourist Board office for details.

Outgoing: U.S visitors may carry $600 in purchases after each 48-hour visit. Items made in Jamaica are duty-free. For more information contact the information section and customs house at (876) 922-5140.

Above all else, remember that Jamaicans drive on the LEFT side of the road. Also, keep a close eye out for pedestrians and the occasional crossing of cows, goats, chickens and other domestic animals. More than 10,000 miles (17,000 km) of networking roads connect the islands major towns. Current speed limits are set at 30 mph (50 kmph) for developed areas and 50 mph (80 kmph) for highways. While Jamaica recognizes valid International Driver’s Licenses, visitors from North America may use their license for up to three months per visit. Drivers from the United Kingdom can use theirs for up to twelve months. And those from Japan can use theirs for up to a month. Safety belts are required for drivers and front passengers, and children under 3 must be restrained in infant carriers. Most major towns in Jamaica have car rentals, normally requiring a minimal age of 25.  All Inclusive Outlet recommends that guests utilize resort transporation and resort certified drivers for any excursions outside the resort. Driving in Jamaica is better left to professionals that reside in the country.

Communications

Jamaica is up-to-date and on-line with every level of worldwide communication. The direct International telephone service operates 24 hours a day in all areas, and operators will gladly facilitate third party, collect and credit card calls. Faxes, cables and telegrams can be sent Internationally from most hotels and post offices. Email and Internet access is available in most hotels and parish libraries, as well as local Internet Cafes.

There are three daily national newspapers and five weekend newspapers, all available at hotel front desks, newsstands and vendors island-wide. Many hotels and gift shops receive the International editions of newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, TIME, The Economist and the London Times.

Five local television stations broadcast island-wide with a combination of local and international entertainment. Radio is incredibly popular in Jamaica, and with nearly 20 FM stations, you can get local and international news, sports, weather and music of all genres.

Car rental agencies can be found in the telephone directory and include Internationally recognized companies and local operators. Some agencies operate at the airports, while others operate in resort areas. Renters must be at least 25 years of age, have a valid driver's license and post a bond with cash, major credit card or travelers checks. Service stations are open daily and only accept cash. All Inclusive Outlet does not advise passengers to rent automobiles in Jamaica. Driving is best left to the resort provided transportation or resort certified drivers.  Roads are poorly marked, narrow, and present many obstacles to the foreign visitor.

Electricity

Just like the United States, Jamaica’s electrical supply is 110 volts/50 cycles standard, and uses plugs that are two-pronged and flat. For appliances without 110 volts or flat two-pronged plugs, bring the necessary adaptor and converter with you, as they are not easy to come by in Jamaica. Most laptops have built-in converters and can be used with an adaptor. And if the idea of lugging equipment around seems daunting, leave it behind- most hotels have hair dryers, alarm clocks, radios and irons available.

Originally named ‘Xamayca’ for ‘Land of Wood and Water’, Jamaica has hundreds of spring and rivers above and under ground. Extensive treatment and supply systems have developed island-wide, allowing all of Jamaica’s water to be purified and filtered by modern methods. The water is safe to drink, clean your teeth with, bathe in and wash clothes with. Those still uncomfortable drinking the water can purchase one of the many Jamaican spring water brands that meet or exceed International standards.

There are two international airports in Jamaica: the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Air Jamaica serves Sangster International and other domestic airports including Tinson Pen in Kingston, Negril Aerodrome in Negril, Boscobel in Ocho Rios and Ken Jones in Port Antonio.  Guests booking with All Inclusive Outlet should select Montego Bay as their arrival airport since transfers are not available from Kingston to any resorts.

In keeping with international standards, the entry of all live animals into Jamaica requires an import permit from the Veterinary Services Division of the Ministry of Agriculture PRIOR to arrival. All animals must be rabies-free, and must never have been rabies vaccinated. Cats and dogs (with permits) are allowed into Jamaica ONLY from Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Eire. The use, sale, or possession of drugs such as ganja (marijuana), cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substance is illegal in Jamaica. Violators are subject to severe punishment – specifically arrest, fine and imprisonment.

Jamaica is 4,244 square miles of Mother Nature’s most exotic geographical features. This is the third largest island in the Caribbean and is populated by fewer than 3 million people. Dominated by a series of mountain ranges across the center of the island, Jamaica is a land of flourishing peaks, winding rivers and lush tropical valleys. The southern coast is made up of predominantly black sand beaches while the northern coast is famous for brilliant white sands and reef-protected waters.

Jamaica’ climate is tropical at sea level and temperate towards the highlands of the interior. Each year the island sees two rainy seasons, from May to June and September to November and the average temperature ranges from 66 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and ends on November 30. While Jamaica has seen little in the way of direct hurricane hits, there is a possibility of a storm during this period. The official language of Jamaica is English, although most Jamaicans speak a local dialect influenced by several different languages. It may take a while to become accustomed to, but once you do the local expressions will never leave your tongue.

After winning its Independence from British rule in 1962, Jamaica chose to be a part of the British Commonwealth and keep the Queen of England as the titular head of the country. The Government of Jamaica was based on the Westminster model, and is composed of the Queen and a bicameral Parliament. There are also various courts for tennis, basketball and beach volleyball, and families can take advantage of unusual (but welcome) amenities like a miniature golf course and an archery field.

Odds are you're considering Jamaica for a beach vacation. If that's the case, you're in luck, as Grand Palladium Jamaica has a beach with all kinds of activities. Though you'll have to pay for most water sports, select ones like kayaking and snorkeling do not cost extra. Younger guests won't want to miss the kids club, which is divided into three age-appropriate spaces for babies, young children and teens.

With all there is to do on-site, it's easy to work up an appetite. Fortunately, the resort's all-inclusive package covers all meals and drinks at 12 restaurants and bars, so you'll never go hungry. In Montego Bay's bustling resort area, the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa is a sprawling 495-room property packed with amenities. Its 400 oceanfront acres are home to a massive water park, a private beach and an 18-hole golf course, among other facilities.

Guests seeking an extra dose of relaxation will love that the property has two spas, including one offering beachfront treatments. Available spa services range from massages with Jamaican herbs and gemstone facials to specialty treatments designed to help those with sinus issues or side effects from chemotherapy. There's even a treatment menu for kids as young as 5, should little ones wish to accompany their parents for a day of pampering.

Dining options include eight on-site restaurants, a coffee shop and room service, and the dishes mostly highlight local fare.

Choose from the quick-service Jerk Hut for casual Jamaican bites, a beachfront seafood establishment featuring regional catches, the aptly named Rum Factory (where you can pair your Jamaican meal with a local rum) and a buffet restaurant serving a mix of Caribbean and international dishes. Only the dishes served at Italian-influenced Three Palms cost extra.

For a restful night's sleep, retreat to your modern sea-inspired room or suite. The design is simple but elegant, with mostly white decor complemented by blue accent walls and curtains.

Entry-level rooms start at 370 square feet and come equipped with flat-screen TVs, coffee makers and balconies that overlook the resort grounds, though there are upgraded spaces with views of the golf course or ocean.

Adults-only Hotel Riu Montego Bay is among the least expensive all-inclusives in Jamaica, making it a terrific accommodation option for adults seeking a kid-free atmosphere on a budget.

The beachfront property is less than five miles away from Montego Bay's airport and the Rose Hall Great House (a restored, historic mansion from the 1700s), so guests don't have to worry about long drives on travel and sightseeing days.

However, visitors may find few reasons to leave the amenity-packed property, as it houses just about anything they could desire while on vacation.

There is a large, clean beach, a spa, a fitness center and five swimming pools (including one with a swim-up bar). Additionally, there's Splash Water World, a water park with various waterslides. At night, guests can attend theme parties, listen to live music, dance in the on-site nightclub and more.

Like other Riu resorts, Hotel Riu Montego Bay's room rates cover all meals and drinks. Dining options include a poolside steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, a quick-service jerk station and an international buffet open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For drinks, guests can visit a lobby bar, a lounge and a sports bar, among other options.

The 826 rooms and suites serve as a modern place to retire for the night, with wood and tile floors, contemporary dark wood furnishings and white, navy blue and beige color schemes.

All have stocked minibars, flat-screen TVs, beverage dispensers and private balconies or terraces, some with lovely views of the Caribbean Sea.

Hyatt fans have a few options in Jamaica, including the family-friendly Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall and the adults-only Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall next door. Both in Montego Bay's beachfront resort area, these neighboring all-inclusive resorts attract Hyatt loyalists seeking a healthy dose of sun and sand.

You'll never be short of places to relax, as there's a beach, a spa, three pools (one at the Hyatt Zilara and two at the Hyatt Ziva) and numerous spots for kicking back, such as by the fire pits, in hot tubs and along the boardwalk gazebo.

The large rooms — 344 of which are at the Hyatt Zilara and 277 of which can be found at the Hyatt Ziva — are ideal for unwinding, too.

With at least 493 square feet of space, they have modern furnishings and white and beige color schemes with either blue or purple accents. Most come with furnished terraces overlooking the resort grounds or ocean, though some have swim-up access to a semi-private pool and butler service.

For a little more action, head to the resort's massive fitness center. The 24-hour facility is packed with cardio and strength-training equipment. Additionally, there are various fitness classes at the boardwalk and activities pool.

Enjoy live entertainment like Caribbean steel drum, dance and theatrical performances at both resorts as well. For the little ones, there's a kids club, where children can partake in supervised activities such as beach sports and pajama parties.

After an active or leisurely day, satiate your appetite at one of 11 eateries shared by both resorts. Options range from a beachside shack serving Jamaican barbecue to an Italian restaurant offering homemade pasta. There's also a buffet with themed dinners.

The adults-only, all-inclusive Iberostar Grand Rose Hall sits in the heart of Montego Bay's resort area, giving guests easy access to the historic Rose Hall Great House and some local golf courses, all of which can be found a few miles west.

The fanciest of three adjacent Iberostar resorts, the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall has 295 accommodations that are all suites with at least 689 square feet of space, so visitors can unwind in style while in Jamaica. All have traditional decor (think: dark wood furniture and bright pops of color) and come with butler service, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, whirlpool tubs and furnished balconies or terraces, some of which provide swim-out access to a semi-private pool.

If your suite doesn't come with easy access to a pool, don't fret. There's a large infinity pool with a swim-up bar that all guests can use. Additionally, visitors can check out the white sand beach, which has plenty of seating areas and cabanas.

Should you wish to get your heart rate up during your stay, take part in one of the resort's included activities like water pole dancing, tennis tournaments, Zumba and pirate-themed beach parties. For a more leisurely way to pass the time, visit the spa for fee-based services like massages and body treatments.

Dining options are also abundant, with seven restaurants from which to choose. They include a Japanese venue with teppanyaki and sushi, a wine cellar with Italian classics like lasagna and veal milanese, a French-inspired fine dining establishment and a Jamaican eatery with both buffet and a la carte options. A traditional buffet with various international dishes throughout the day is also available.

All-inclusive rates at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall start at $705 per night, based on double occupancy.

Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort that sits side by side with its sister resort (Secrets St. James Montego Bay) on a quiet peninsula, so guests can expect a modicum of privacy while staying here.

Unlike other megaresorts in the Montego Bay area, the crowd at both of these properties is mostly composed of older couples and friend groups who like to both party and relax, meaning you'll find activities that best suit your preference at any given time.

Rates include activities like bicycle tours, dance classes, kayaking, cooking lessons, snorkeling and tennis, plus the use of multiple pools and hot tubs. You can also attend live shows in an open-air theater, beach parties and more without incurring additional charges.

If you wish to upgrade your experience, book a treatment at the spa, which has a full menu of services, including body wraps using tropical ingredients like mango and chocolate. Water adventures like scuba diving excursions, banana boat rides and glass-bottom boat tours are also available for a fee.

All 20 food and beverage outlets (across both resorts) are covered by the resorts' all-inclusive rates, so you'll have your pick of eateries and bars, no matter what you're in the mood for. Visit Blue Mountain for Jamaican fare, Bordeaux for contemporary French cuisine, El Patio for classic Mexican dishes or Oceana for fresh seafood in a romantic seaside setting, among other options.

As you might expect, accommodation options are also plentiful. With 350 suites, Secrets Wild Orchid skews modern with upholstered headboards and stone-topped furnishings, as well as bathrooms with white plantation-style shutter doors that you can move to take in the garden or ocean views from freestanding tubs.

Sandals Royal Caribbean is a world unto itself, with a private island and the option to stay in a beachfront room or an overwater bungalow. Despite sitting within Montego Bay's resort area, the adults-only property feels intimate and quiet, making it ideal for couples.

At the 232-room resort, you'll find a mix of old and new buildings, giving you a wide variety of room types and styles. There are rooms with more traditional colonial-style furnishings like four-poster beds and matching dark wood TV consoles, plus airy accommodations with light wood furniture and beachy colors. Some offer a more modern take on Caribbean decor, with sleek dark wood furniture and pops of turquoise, navy blue and gold.

No matter which room you choose, you'll find a stocked minifridge and a balcony or patio. Splurge on an upgraded suite for extras like butler service and direct access to a beach or shared pool. Some overwater bungalows even come with private plunge pools and suspended daybeds for prime waterfront lounging.

Though you may be tempted to spend the bulk of your time in your room, suite or overwater bungalow, you'd be remiss if you didn't take advantage of the resort's amenities. Don't assume this all-inclusive is only about the beach, though. Younger guests will love zipping down slides at the pirate-themed water park and interacting with the resort's mascot, Turbo the Turtle, at the kids club. There's even a separate teens lounge for the older kids in your crew.

Right on the beach in Montego Bay's resort area, the Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort & Spa attracts families keen on relaxing in the Caribbean sun.

Though you won't find an activities calendar jam-packed with things to do here, guests can unwind by one of two pools (one of which has a swim-up bar) or try water sports like kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing at the beach.

Younger visitors can also play arcade and video games, take part in arts and crafts projects, go on scavenger hunts and more at the kids club and teens lounge while adults enjoy a yoga class or treatment at the spa (charges apply).

When your entire group is back together, catch up while filling up on gourmet fare at one of seven on-site restaurants. The property's two outdoor grills and international buffet are ideal for a casual meal, while Le Bouchon is the spot to go for steakhouse classics. Round Hill Hotel and Villas feels like a private club rather than a traditional property, with its tidy rooms, suites and villas sprinkled across 110 acres of prime Montego Bay waterfront. Mostly built in the 1950s, the villas have drawn a who's who of society, including former President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who stayed here for their honeymoon.

All 36 rooms face the ocean, and the interiors were dreamed up by Ralph Lauren, creating a stylish yet comfortable setting, perfect for kicking back in the Caribbean. Expect white sofas, chairs, walls and linens with dark bamboo four-poster beds and bright pink and blue throw pillows for a pop of color.

How I Took My Family of 3 on an Epic 3-week Vacation in Jamaica for About $4,000 — Including Flights

Here's how we did it.

The drive from Montego Bay was supposed to take four hours, but five hours in, it was clear Google Maps didn’t account for the fact that the last 12 miles was an unpaved and potholed single-lane road. 

Our rental car (a little Mazda Demio) and driver (my husband) were tasked with dodging potholes, pulling over every time a vehicle came from the other direction and letting teens zip past on their motorbikes. It was dark and our arrival window for the Airbnb was long gone. Oh, and there was a screaming baby in the back seat.

It was our first trip as a family of three. My daughter was a fresh 6 months, with a brand-new passport , and we were in Jamaica. But as you might have gathered, we weren’t headed to an all-inclusive resort in Negril or Montego Bay, like many families do.

I take great pride in my ability to get off the beaten path and save a buck, and I was determined to not let the fact that I now had a baby change that. Plus, our friend who grew up on the island promised our final destination — Boston Bay, on the far eastern side of the island — would be worth it. 

The almost six-hour journey from the Montego Bay airport to the far eastern coast of Jamaica was brutal, but Boston Bay was the paradise our friend guaranteed. Clean beaches , great surf, and quiet nights. And after a day in the water, the drive was a distant memory.

Here’s how we made this trip happen on a budget, spending a little over $4,000 for three people to spend three weeks in paradise.

We booked flights a month in advance, used miles, and didn’t have to pay for the baby.

Cost: $1,656

In our family, booking last-minute flights is the norm. That, paired with the fact that we live six hours from the nearest international airport, usually means we pay more for flights. However, for this trip, we had two major wins: I had some flight miles , which shaved off a few hundred bucks, and my daughter — who was 6 months old — flew for free on my lap.

We rented a car, which ended up being a major expense.

We booked the cheapest car on the island from a small rental company. The total for three weeks was $340 — a steal. Of course, like many things that are too good to be true, the online cost didn’t match the actual price. After admitting that, yes, we did need insurance, we forked over $750. It was an unexpected expense, but there was no way around it. We drove the car daily.

We split our time between two Airbnbs.

Cost: $1,010

We stayed in two different Airbnbs during our trip, both in the Boston Bay area. The first had a queen bed and a crib and the second had two queen beds (we utilized a pillow barrier in the latter). An Airbnb was key because we ate breakfast and dinner at home every day — another money-saving tip.

We rarely went out to eat, and when we did, it was for lunch.

Cost: Approximately $900

Our food costs were wonderfully low thanks to the fact that there aren’t many restaurants in Boston Bay and we had a little human who needed to be in bed by 7 p.m. For breakfast, we ate yogurt and tropical fruit and did lots of pasta for dinner. Lunch was typically a PB&J sandwich eaten on the beach.

That said, it was ackee season when we arrived, so we enjoyed a few nice meals at Aya Naturals and visited several of the area’s famous Jamaican jerk stands, where jerk cooking was invented.

All in all, we spent around $95 a day on food and lodging, plus flights and a rental car. The total trip cost was $4,316.

We spent a full 20 days in Jamaica, which helped offset the cost of flights and the 20-day car rental. We had such a great time, we’re planning to do it again this fall — this time with a toddler.

Impacts may be 'catastrophic' as Hurricane Beryl pounds Jamaica: Live updates

Hurricane Beryl was retreating from Jamaica late Wednesday and is expected to pass just south of the Cayman Islands overnight as a major hurricane, bringing intense winds and heavy rain, the National Hurricane Center said.

As of 2 a.m. ET Thursday, Beryl was downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 mph and was about 110 miles southeast of Grand Cayman — the largest of the Cayman Islands. After roaring by Jamaica's southern coast, the hurricane was expected to unload "devastating hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge, and damaging waves" across the Cayman Islands, according to the hurricane center.

The Cayman Islands could get up to half a foot of rain through Thursday. Weather officials are also warning about life-threatening surf and rip currents along parts of western Cuba, the Yucatan Peninsula, and the coast of Belize.

Beryl was on track to approach the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula about 24 hours later, still as a hurricane but weakened by expected wind shear.

In Jamaica, emergency crews evacuated people living in flood-prone communities and nearly 500 people were in shelters by Wednesday afternoon, according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

“We’re concerned about widespread damage and potentially catastrophic impacts in Jamaica,” said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather's chief on-air meteorologist. "Flooding may last days to even weeks. Widespread power outages are expected. Beryl will likely damage many homes and businesses and cause severe coastal inundation."

The chances of Beryl impacting part of the Texas Gulf Coast have increased with the projected path veering northwest, AccuWeather reported , although it would not bring anywhere near the ferocity of its devastating assault on the southern Windward Islands earlier this week. The current track calls for Beryl to weaken to a tropical storm as it crosses the Yucatan and then becomes a hurricane again before making landfall along the coast near the border of Mexico and Texas.

The storm is projected to drench Jamaica with 4 to 8 inches of rain, and 12 inches are forecast in some places, which could cause "life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides," the NHC said. Holness declared all of Jamaica a "disaster area" and imposed an islandwide curfew Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Monday, Beryl made landfall in Grenada's Carriacou island as a Category 4 hurricane, ravaging the southern Caribbean Islands, flattening hundreds of buildings and causing the deaths of at least seven people. On Monday night, Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record. Driven by record-hot ocean temperatures, Beryl's rapid strengthening has stunned experts.

Developments:

∎ The death toll from the powerful hurricane rose to at least 10, according to Reuters. But that figure is expected to increase as communications come back online across islands damaged by flooding and intense winds.

∎ The Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica posted on X that a small section of the roof of its passenger boarding pier was damaged by Beryl. "Once the storm has completely passed, a full assessment of damage will be done," the airport stated on X.

∎ The Meteorological Service of Mexico issued a hurricane warning for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, a popular tourist destination, according to the NHC. Tropical storm warnings were also issued for other parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

∎ Venezuela's vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, and senior officials in her traveling party were injured by a falling tree Tuesday night while surveying an area near the country's Caribbean coast where the Manzanares River overran its banks after heavy rainfall caused by Beryl.

Will Hurricane Beryl hit Texas?

Portions of South Texas are now within the forecast cone of Hurricane Beryl , which meteorologists say could arrive in the state over the weekend or early Monday.

However, forecasters remain unsure of what Beryl will do and how strong it will be as it approaches the Gulf Coast after hitting Mexico: "High uncertainty remains with both the track and intensity of Beryl," the  National Weather Service said Wednesday.

"From Panama City, Florida to New Orleans, there is a low risk of direct impacts from Beryl, but from about Corpus Christi to Brownsville, Texas, the risk increases significantly due to the potential for Beryl to have more direct impacts,"  AccuWeather  meteorologist Jonathan Porter said. "That southern portion of the Texas coast is the zone we have to really watch."

Coastal threats could begin this weekend, Weather.com warned: "Well ahead of Beryl, onshore winds could lead to increasing surf, rip currents and coastal flooding along parts of the Gulf Coast from eastern Mexico to Texas and western Louisiana beginning as soon as Saturday, and continuing until just after Beryl's final landfall, Weather.com  said. The rip current threat could also even extend farther east along the northern Gulf Coast.

Brennan said Tuesday that "folks in the Texas coast, as we go into the holiday weekend, you're going to want to make sure you check back on the forecast and make sure you're ready for any potential impact. If we were to see tropical storm conditions affect those areas in the far western Gulf of Mexico, it could be during the day Saturday."

More than 90% of the homes, buildings destroyed

More than 90% of homes and buildings across at least three islands were destroyed or severely damaged after Beryl tore through the southeast Caribbean, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday. The agency was assisting with the disaster response in Grenada, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines.

Beryl struck the islands with winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, causing significant impacts to the islands, according to Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. In addition to infrastructure damages, some islands have also faced power outages and disruptions to communications.

In a briefing late Tuesday, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

Airlines waive fees for some in Hurricane Beryl's path

Six major U.S. airlines said they're waiving various fees for travelers who have flights booked in Beryl's path. In most cases, flights booked before July 1 are eligible for the changes. The listed flights include departures from or arrivals in airports in Mexico, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Belize.

American , JetBlue , United , Delta , Southwest , and Spirit Airlines are offering a variety of fee waivers because of the hurricane. Passengers are encouraged to check directly with the airlines on what amended policies apply to them.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said on its website travelers on international flights may be able to recover expenses from a delayed or canceled flight by filing a claim with the airline.

"If the claim is denied, you may pursue the matter in court if you believe that the carrier did not take all measures that could reasonably be required to avoid the damages caused by the delay," the agency said.

Resort manager in Jamaica maintains composure as Hurricane Beryl approaches

The coming hurricane doesn't scare Tamar Atkinson, the manager of a small resort in Hanover, a community on Jamaica's northwest coast.

"The way I look at it, I can't stop it," she told USA TODAY. "If the hurricane is going to blow your house down, it's going to blow the house down."

Atkinson, 42, who moved back to Hanover a year ago after she lived in the U.S. for 20 years, already has her sea legs in weathering Jamaica's hurricanes. She remembers facing Hurricane Gilbert, a Category 5, as a little girl – the storm blew the roof off her aunt's house, where she sheltered, but left her mother's house in "perfect condition."

When Hurricane Ivan hit two decades ago, Atkinson sheltered at a nearby school. Once again, the storm blew out the school's windows but left Atkinson's house untouched. "I'm not leaving my house, and I'm not going to go crazy like the rest of the people," she said, adding that she's told her guests to "relax their nerves."

Jamaica closes all international airports as Hurricane Beryl nears island

The Jamaica Tourist Board announced Wednesday that the Sangster, Norman Manley, and Ian Fleming international airports were closed as Hurricane Beryl approached the island.

Jamaica's travel website, VisitJamaica.com, doesn't list a reopening time for the airports and encourages travelers to contact their travel agents and/or airlines for flight updates. The website also encourages travelers to heed any instructions from their hotel or private accommodation on sheltering.

"We also encourage you to register with your Embassy for country-specific guidance and support," the board said on the website.

The U.S. Embassy in Jamaica is open on a limited basis and encourages Americans to not visit the embassy for shelter and instead seek a government-run shelter. Citizens in Jamaica are encouraged to call the embassy at (876) 702-6486 if they need assistance.

Ahead of Hurricane Beryl, Jamaicans prepare their homes

Donae Maye stocked up on water, candles, and food earlier this week, before supermarkets across her hometown of Montego Bay, a city on Jamaica's northern Coast, emptied.

"There was no bread, no essentials that you actually need, no candles, very few tin products," she said on Wednesday, after a recent visit to some local grocery stores.

Maye, 27, also prepped her home, where she will shelter with her fiance, her son and his father. "We cleared away any trees that might be blocking any electrical wires and stuff like that that might fall and break the window," she said.

She's confident that her house, which is made of concrete, will stand up to the storm better than many buildings did to Hurricane Ivan 20 years ago. Back then, more structures were made of board, which didn't fare well in the storm, she said. Today, "most structures are built to withstand the winds and the hurricane," she said.

Humanitarian groups rally relief for impacted countries

Global Giving and Americares are among the humanitarian organizations collecting money for those affected by Hurricane Beryl. Both promise donations to support various impacted communities, focusing on those who are disadvantaged and on decimated medical facilities.

Cora Nally, international emergency response director of Americares, said the organization focuses on restoring damaged medical facilities and expects to deploy its workers to Jamaica soon after Beryl leaves.

"That is really going to serve as a home base for them, and we are asking them to do an assessment of all the impacted islands in the Caribbean, and we are going to be keeping an eye on the storm as it moves towards Mexico and the United States," she said.

Is Cancun in the path of Hurricane Beryl?

Among the parts of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and surrounding areas under hurricane warnings were Cancun and the island of Cozumel, two popular tourist destinations packed with luxury resorts and cruise ship ports.

The hurricane warnings were issued by the Meteorological Service of Mexico as forecasters warned residents and tourists of the projected impact of Hurricane Beryl.

Brennan, the director of the NHC, said in a YouTube livestream on Wednesday that the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun, faces 3 to 5 feet of storm surge as well as up to 8 inches of rain.

The record-breaking hurricane is expected to make landfall along the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday night or early Friday, NHC said.

In Jamaica, tourists shelter in hotel ballroom from Hurricane Beryl

Cecilia Garcia and her family initially planned to weather the beginning of the hurricane in the bathroom of their hotel room in Ocho Rios, on Jamaica's northern coastline. "We do have windows in our room, so I think the safest option would probably be to go in our restroom," she said.

Moon Palace Jamaica, where Garcia, 25, is staying with her parents, brother, sister and two kids, told hotel guests to evacuate to a ballroom. When Garcia and her family first visited the shelter, they found it too chaotic. "We ended up back in our room because it was very crowded," she said. "It was very hot in there."

But later on Wednesday morning, as the winds picked up, the family returned to the packed ballroom, where thin cots were arranged in rows, according to a video Garcia shared with USA TODAY.

Garcia and her family's flight back to their home of Houston, Texas, isn't until Saturday – the hurricane will strike at the midpoint of their week-long vacation. Garcia said if they chose to end their stay earlier, they wouldn't get a refund. 

Looking out at skies still partially clear on Wednesday morning, Garcia said the family was keeping calm ahead of the storm. "We're kind of used to bad weather and floods like that in Houston," she said. "But again, it's different when you're not at home, so that's the only scary part."

Hurricane Beryl spoiling graduation trip

Mona Parhar, 23, and Arezoo Rafkhani, 24, didn't start searching for early return flights from their vacation to Jamaica until Tuesday night, less than 24 hours before Hurricane Beryl was expected to sweep across the island. By then, they learned airports had closed.

"We really have no choice but to stick it out," Parhar said Wednesday from their hotel room at the Hotel Riu in Montego Bay on the island's northern side.

The two Toronto natives booked their trip to celebrate their recent graduations – Rafkhani from Toronto Metropolitan University and Parhar from York University. "We've never experienced something like this as Canadians," Rafkhani said. "It's kind of nerve-wracking."

The pair were comforted by the hotel staff, who kept guests informed and safe. "Since last night, they've been sending us messages about how to get prepared, what they're doing and will be doing this morning," Rafkhani said. "They've been keeping us calm," Parhar said.

Jamaica braces for Hurricane Beryl

Jamaican officials warned residents to stock up on food, batteries, candles, and drinking water. Residents in flood-prone areas were also advised to prepare for evacuation.

"Secure your critical documents and remove any trees or items that could endanger your property," the Office of the Prime Minister in Jamaica said on X on Tuesday. "Everyone, including those living alone, should take these necessary steps now."

As a precaution, Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Tuesday night that electricity and water services will likely be shut off "if the storm reaches a serious threshold" to prevent fires and protect equipment.

"Only one hurricane has ever affected Jamaica during July," according to AccuWeather meteorologist Jesse Ferrell. "Category 4 Hurricane Dennis in 2005 did not make landfall but killed one person and caused a lot of damage."

Hurricane Beryl breaks records

Forecasters have projected 2024 to be one of the busiest hurricane seasons on record. Beryl has already surprised forecasters and broken records since it formed, including becoming the earliest Category 4 or 5 storm on record.

Beryl broke the previous record set by Hurricane Emily on July 17, 2005, for the strongest Category 5 hurricane. Beryl rapidly strengthened from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in about 48 hours.

The storm is also the earliest Category 4 or larger storm by more than a week, breaking the record set by Hurricane Dennis, a Category 4 storm on July 8, 2005.

It was fueled by  much warmer than normal  ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and aided in that development by light winds that allowed it to build a strong inner core.

Smaller islands hit hard by Beryl

Beryl hit St. Vincent and the Grenadines especially hard, according to Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.

"The hurricane has come and gone, and it has left in its wake immense destruction," he said, adding that Union Island had 90% of homes "severely damaged or destroyed."

After making landfall in Grenada's Carriacou Island on Monday, strong winds and high water levels smashed fishing boats in Barbados, downed power lines in Grenada and St. Vincent, and knocked out drinking water in St. Lucia, according to officials.

Grenada's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell noted on Tuesday that the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique were significantly impacted by the hurricane. In addition to downed power lines, roads remained impassable and fuel stations were destroyed.

"The situation is grim. There is no power. There is almost complete destruction of homes and buildings," Mitchell said.
