Tata has brought the Safari name back with its latest model, which is a seven-seat derivative of the Harrier. Unlike previous Safaris, which used ladder-frame chassis and traditional, rear-biased 4x4, the new one uses Land Rover's D8 platform (OmegaArc in Tata parlance) and is front-wheel-drive only. It's powered by a 170hp FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine, which can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.

The new Safari is attractive, plush and well equipped, and with a genuinely useable third row is it makes a compelling case for itself. Sure, it’s not a versatile 4x4 as the original Safari was but see it as the three-row SUV for the family that it is, and you’ll find that Tata’s new flagship scores where it matters. It's also secured a full, 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP.

Expert Review on Tata Safari
- Solid Road Presence
- Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
- Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
- Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
- Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
- Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable
Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.
Tata Safari
The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.
How’s the Design?
The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.
How does it perform?
The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.
How’s the mileage?
- Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
- Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl
How’s the driving experience?
The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.
What’s the interior like?
The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.
Tech and infotainment
The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.
Safety equipment
The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.
Which variant to buy?
You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.
Which cars compete in the segment?
The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.
Verdict (Value for Money)
The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. Great SUV for long drives and family trips
By Madok Deepak @ Sep 19, 2024 04:38 PM
The new Tata Safari is powerful and spacious. The engine performance is great, especially with the automatic variant. There’s loads of boot space for all your luggage, and the safety features like airbags give a solid safety experience. Though it's on the pricier side, it’s a great SUV for long drives and family trips.

Tata safari user reviews & ratings.
The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.
And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:
Also watch: 2023 Tata Safari review: Family SUV with bachelor spirit?
2023 tata safari facelift: exterior.
The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.
There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.
There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior
The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.
The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.
The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.
There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.
Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?
Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety
Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.
The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.
Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.
2023 tata safari facelift: performance.
Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.
But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict
The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.
The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

- 2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari: The Base Variant Showdown!
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- The base Alcazar 'Executive' is priced at Rs 15.99 lakh.
- The base Safari Smart persona undercuts the Alcazar diesel marginally
- Both cars receive no smartphone connectivity in their base guise!
- The Safari is larger in terms of dimensions
- The Alcazar offers a better aftersales experience
The 2024 Hyundai Alcazar has finally arrived, and it also brings forward a lot of questions. If you're in the three-row SUV segment, should you buy the new Alcazar, and why? After all, it is smaller and less powerful than, say something like a Tata Safari . But, is size really all that matters when it comes to three-row SUVs?
To find the answer, we are putting together the base variants of the new Alcazar and the Safari, to see how they stack up against each other and which one offers better value. Why the base variants, you ask? Because they are available at rather attractive price points, and buyers of mid-size SUVs might just deviate and also consider these options.
However, before diving in, make sure to join the 91wheels WhatsApp Community to stay up-to-date with the latest automotive buzz, and to get in touch with like-minded enthusiasts!
2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari : Under The Hood
It is important to note that the Safari is available only with a diesel powertrain, while the Alcazar offers you petrol and diesel both, with manual and automatic options. Hence, for the sake of this comparison, we shall stick with the diesel powertrains.
The new Alcazar continues with the familiar 1.5-litre diesel unit producing 113bhp and 250Nm of torque, paired to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the Safari gets a larger 2.0-litre mill with 167bhp and 350Nm of torque, also paired to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. Needless to say, the base variants of both cars offer a manual transmission only.

2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari: Covering Bases
The 2024 Hyundai Alcazar diesel lineup starts from the Executive 7-seater trim, which is priced at Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, the Tata Safari is marginally cheaper at Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), for the base Smart persona.
2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari: Interiors and Features
The interiors of both cars feature similar interior layouts compared to their smaller mid-size siblings. However, given that these are the base variants, there will be a few things missing. The Alcazar Executive 7-seater trim comes with a smart key, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, rear sun-blinds, cruise control, powered ORVMs, rear A/C vents, powered tailgate, connected lights at both ends, a cooled glovebox, start/stop system, automatic headlamps with follow-me function, UBS C-type charging ports, and a rear centre armrest.
Shockingly, the Alcazar Executive does not receive any sort of smartphone connectivity, and there's not even a basic screen to speak of. The driver does get a digital MID, but that's about it. However, in terms of safety, the Alcazar Executive does come equipped with ABS, seat belt reminders, ISOFIX child seat mounts, hill-start assist, corner stability control, emergency braking signal, rear parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitoring system and six airbags.
In its base smart trim, the Tata Safari too does not receive any infotainment screen or phone connectivity. In fact, there's no keyless system to speak of here as well! However, it does receive dual-zone climate control, rear A/C vents, traction control, rear parking sensors, hill-hold, ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, corner stability control, roll-over mitigation, height-adjustable seat belts, emergency braking signal, ISOFIX child seat mounts, A-type and C-type USB ports at the front, and the new illuminated logo steering wheel.

2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari Dimensions
Surprisingly, the Safari has a smaller wheelbase compared to the Alcazar. The Safari's wheelbase measures 2741mm, while the Alcazar's is slightly longer at 2760mm. However, everywhere else, the Safari trumps the Alcazar in terms of dimensions, being longer, taller and wider, and thus not only giving it a more imposing stance, but also offering a roomier interior than the Alcazar. For reference, the Alcazar's LxWxH dimensions are 4560 x 1800 x 1710mm, while the Safari's are 4668 x 1922 x 1795mm.
That said, the 2024 Alcazar has grown in terms of size when you compare it to the outgoing model, and it remains to be seen how much of an improvement there is over the older car. Do stay tuned for our review on the new Alcazar; we'll be driving it soon!

2024 Hyundai Alcazar Vs Tata Safari: Who Wins?
Choosing between the base variants of the Alcazar and the Safari shouldn't be that difficult if you know what you're looking for. Neither car offers much in terms of novelty features in this trim. If you're someone who needs to carry seven people regularly, you'd want them to be as comfortable as possible, and that's where the Safari comes in.
The Safari's third-row is actually quite manageable, and in this base variant, you get a bench seat in the middle row, with a 60:40 split. This makes access to the third row easier, as the split part of the bench tumbles down easily.
The new Alcazar remains untested in this regard for now, but from experience, I can tell it wasn't easy entering the third row in the older model. Once there, it did not feel as roomy either.
The Safari also possesses incredible on-road manners as well; Tata has nailed it in terms of the chassis and suspension setup, and that 2.0-litre diesel engine has a great amount of punch all over. Thus, the Safari proves to be an effective highway tool, even with a full load.
The new Alcazar remains untested in this regard too, but from experience, it shouldn't be all that different from the older model. While the older car performed decently with 3 people and it offers a comfortable ride experience, it did feel sluggish and a little underpowered with a full-load of people and luggage.
That said, Hyundai 's aftersales and service network remains unbeaten when you compare it against Tata , which seems to have its fair share of niggles crop up at times, and that will make your purchase decision either easier or tougher.
Verdict While the base Tata Safari offers better performance, proven crash test ratings, larger dimensions, excellent on-road manners, the base Alcazar offers just a bit more in terms of creature comfort. The Alcazar also claws back with Hyundai's reliability and service network. If you are not going to use all three rows of seating on a daily basis, and you want to opt for a stress-free experience, the Alcazar diesel is the one to go for.

Tata Motors has updated the Punch SUV and rationalised the line-up for its petrol and CNG variants, somewhat simplifying the range. The company has also added more features to select variants. While the base price of the Tata Punch is unchanged at Rs 6.13 lakh, the top-spec trim’s price has reduced by about Rs 20,000 from Rs 10.20 lakh. The company has also announced additional benefits up to Rs 18,000 on the SUV for a limited period.
- Select Punch trims have been discontinued; few trims added
- Now gets 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen from mid-spec Accomplished +
- Petrol and CNG powertrains continue; no exterior or interior changes
The Tata Punch will no longer be available in Pure Rhythm, Accomplished, Accomplished SR and Creative Flagship trims. While the entry-level Pure, Adventure and Adventure Rhythm are unchanged, the Indian brand has introduced new Pure (O), Adventure S and Adventure + S trims. In addition, the Accomplished Dazzle and Creative variants have been slightly rejigged.
The number of CNG-powered Punch variants has increased from five to seven. Like with the petrol versions, the entry-level Pure, Adventure and Adventure Rhythm continue. However, there are a greater number of mid-spec and top-spec variants to choose from. Prices for the range-topping CNG variant has risen by about Rs 5,000.
As for features, the new Pure (O) petrol variant gets central locking, powered windows, powered ORVMs, wheel covers, and other bits over the base Pure trim. Meanwhile, the Adventure S and Adventure + S, as their names imply, add a sunroof and rear AC vents, among other things, to the Adventure Rhythm trim. Punch Accomplished + and the variants above it get the new and larger 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen; Creative + and Creative + S trims add a wireless charger as well.
The exterior colour options for the Punch have also changed marginally, depending on the variant selected.
Pure variants get Orcus White and Daytona Grey finishes only; the Adventure and Adventure Rhythm also have a Tropical Mist finish. The sunroof-equipped Adventure trims add a Calypso Red paint shade, and the Accomplished variants are also available in Meteor Bronze. Finally, the Creative variants are available in five dual-tone finishes; the Meteor Bronze one available on the mid-spec variants is replaced by the signature Tornado Blue finish.
Mechanically and aesthetically, there are no changes to the Punch, and for now, Tata's smallest SUV offering will continue with just the feature update.
The Tata Punch continues to rival the likes of the Hyundai Exter (Rs 6-Rs10.43 lakh), Citroen C3 (Rs 6.16-Rs 9.42 lakh^) and the Maruti Ignis (Rs 5.84-Rs 8.06 lakh).

2024 Hyundai Alcazar Facelift Review – Enriched and Fortified
Launched in April 2021, the Alcazar quickly became Hyundai’s answer to those looking for a three-row SUV in the Rs 15-25 lakh price range. Despite building on the strengths of the Creta, it was soon overshadowed by Mahindra’s XUV700 , which pretty much stole the spotlight with its bolder look, feature-rich cabin and aggressive pricing. Fast forward to September 2024, and Hyundai has introduced a refreshed Alcazar. The mid-life facelift brings in a new styling package, more goodies and even a stronger safety net. I had the opportunity to drive the new vehicle around the scenic Udaipur to see if the updates would help the Alcazar get back into the limelight.
Bold New Look: First Impressions Matter
At first glance, the 2024 Hyundai Alcazar facelift demands attention. Hyundai has done a commendable job of making it look bolder and more distinct from the Creta. While some elements, like the headlamps, still carry a resemblance to its smaller sibling, the larger grille gives it a distinct look. The wider grille and the H-shaped LED DRLs add a premium touch. Meanwhile the redesigned front bumper makes it look more aggressive. From the side, the Alcazar has a more refined look. This is largely due to the gloss black trim around the windows and the stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels. But my favorite part of the design has to be the rear. The connected LED taillights add a modern, stylish flair, and the updated bumper gives it a posher look.
Overall, the Alcazar’s styling changes may not be revolutionary, but they certainly make the SUV look more striking than its predecessor. It may not have the rugged, true-blue SUV vibe of the Mahindra XUV700 or the Tata Safari, but it’s definitely one for those who want their three-row SUV to look suave and sophisticated. Oh, and the matte colour options add some more jazz to the aesthetics.

Plush Interior: Comfort and Technology Galore
Get inside and you’ll be quick to notice the Creta-sourced dashboard. However, the beige-blue colour scheme lends it a more upmarket look. Another highlight is the twin 10.25-inch screens – one each for the instrument cluster and the infotainment. The centre console houses a wireless smartphone charger, USB type-C port, USB type-A post, and a 12V-socket. It even houses the electronic parking brake switch along with the controls for the cooled seats. Speaking of the seats, they are re-upholstered and have premium feel to them. The front seats offer 8-way power adjustments, while the driver’s seat even has memory function.
The seats themselves are plush and feel luxurious. The front seats offer 8-way power adjustments, and the driver’s seat even has a memory function. The Alcazar now even comes with a nifty feature- Digital key. Using your smartphone or even your Apple Watch, you can unlock and start the car. It’s a neat touch for the tech-savvy crowd, though the absence of electric tailgate operation is a bit surprising. So is the omission of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Middle Row: The Real VIP Treatment
While the front seats are nice, the middle row is where the Alcazar truly shines. If you opt for the 6-seater version, you’ll get seat coolers for the middle row as well. There’s also adjustable under-thigh support. Meanwhile, the wing-type headrests provide extra support to the head. But the best feature of the middle row has to be the Boss Mode. This allows the rear passengers to adjust the front passenger seat to free up more legroom. It’s a great feature for the chauffeur-driven. And there are even foldable tables for the rear occupants. A wireless smartphone charger for the rear occupants is another novelty. The Alcazar’s middle row might just be the best in its class, offering comfort and features that even some luxury SUVs don’t provide.
Third Row & Boot: Still Tight on Space But Better Cargo Management
The third row is the Achilles’ Heel – the third row continues to be tight on space. The knee room and headspace are quite limited, making it best suited for kids or pets. If you’re an adult sitting back there, you might want to keep your journey short. On the plus side, Hyundai has provided dedicated air-con vents and Type-C USB ports. With all three rows in use, you get 180 liters of boot space. However, fold the third row flat, and you get a generous 579 litres.
On the Road: A Smooth Operator
Under the hood, the 2024 Alcazar continues with the engine options introduced in its earlier iteration. You get the 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine that churns out 160 PS and 250 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-liter diesel that produces 115 PS and 253 Nm. The car I drove was powered by the turbo-petrol engine, paired with a 7-speed DCT. The petrol engine is refined and quiet, especially at lower speeds. The power delivery is linear, and the Alcazar feels peppy enough for quick overtakes. While it’s no rocket, the Alcazar can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in under 10 seconds. The 7-speed DCT is well-tuned and offers smooth, seamless gear shifts. In Sport mode, the gear shifts become more aggressive, which adds a bit of fun to the driving experience.
One of the Alcazar’s standout features is its segment-best 2,760 mm wheelbase, which contributes to its stable and composed ride. The larger 18-inch wheels improve the handling dynamics, though the Alcazar is clearly tuned more for comfort than sporty driving. The light steering makes it a breeze to drive in the city, but it doesn’t offer much feedback when you’re pushing it hard in the corners. The suspension does a good job of soaking up most bumps and potholes, but the larger wheels do introduce some stiffness over rough roads. That said, for most buyers, the Alcazar’s ride quality will be hard to fault.
Verdict: A Well-Rounded Family SUV
Starting at Rs 14.99 lakh for the petrol and Rs 15.99 lakh for the diesel variants, the Hyundai Alcazar facelift offers good value, especially when you consider the features it brings to the table. The fact that both powertrains are priced similarly, except for the base trim, is likely to push more buyers towards the petrol variant, which gets a panoramic sunroof.
The Alcazar might not look as robust as the Mahindra XUV700, but it more than makes up for it with its well-sorted interior, modern features, and impressive comfort levels. Hyundai has done a commendable job of modernizing the Alcazar and addressing key areas that needed some updates. Whether you’re driving in the city or going on long road trips with the family, the Alcazar is a solid, well-rounded option that’s hard to ignore. In a segment brimming with competition, the 2024 Alcazar facelift feels like a strong contender. It’s enriched with more equipment, fortified with a revised monocoque and a gamut of safety features, and feels totally ready to take on the best the segment offers.
