Abba reunite for Voyage, first new album in 40 years

Swedish hitmakers to release album of brand new material in November, and digital avatars will appear in London concert residency in 2022

One of the most anticipated comebacks in pop culture has finally come to pass: the return of Abba .

Forty years after the bitter songs written in the wake of two band divorces for their last album, 1981’s The Visitors, the Swedish pop quartet has reunited for Voyage, an album of brand new songs that will be released on 5 November – including, they say, a Christmas song. Two tracks from it, the stately and epic ballad I Still Have Faith in You and the shimmying Don’t Shut Me Down, are out now.

The group – Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus – have also announced a new concert experience in London, also called Voyage, beginning in May 2022. Digital versions of themselves (not holograms, their team asserted) will appear nightly alongside a 10-piece live band at a new 3,000-capacity venue in the city’s Olympic park, called the Abba Arena. Tickets go on general sale on Tuesday 7 September.

Lyngstad said of their reunion: “Such joy it was to work with the group again – I am so happy with what we have made,” and called Andersson and Ulvaeus “exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters”.

Ulvaeus said of Fältskog and Lyngstad: “I was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs,” with Andersson saying: “I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat.”

Andersson added: “We’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future.”

Abba’s digital avatars were created using motion capture technology, similar to that used by Andy Serkis and others to portray CGI beasts in Hollywood movies: the group was filmed in skintight suits for the lifelike recreations. Wayne McGregor , resident artist at London’s Royal Ballet, choreographed the band’s performance, and an 850-strong team from George Lucas-founded effects company Industrial Light & Magic designed and animated the de-aged avatars from the footage.

McGregor said: “Imagine: growing up in the north of England in the 70s and learning to ballroom, Latin and disco dance to the incredible songs of Abba. I was eight and I was totally transported. Fast forward to 2020, being in Sweden and dancing with Abba – in real life! I was about to be 50 and I was totally transported again. That is the magic of Abba.” He promised “technological wizardry, state of the art immersion and entertainment innovation. And still at its searing heart we simply have new songs, new moves, classic songs, classic moves.”

The footage is directed by film-maker Baillie Walsh, and produced by Johan Renck – best known as the Emmy-winning director of TV miniseries Chernobyl – and Svana Gisla, who worked with Renck on videos for David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar. Also on the creative team is Benny Andersson’s film producer son, Ludwig.

Both the concert and album have been mooted for some time. The avatar concept – or “Abbatars” as Ulvaeus has called them – was announced in 2016 by music manager Simon Fuller (who is not involved with the 2022 iteration). In 2017, Andersson elaborated on the project, saying: “It will take a bit of time, it takes time to digitalise a face. It’s fun that it’s so technologically advanced.” In 2018, a TV show featuring the avatars was announced, co-produced by the BBC and NBC, which has not yet been aired.

The group also announced that meeting up for the project had “an unexpected consequence. We all felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did. And it was like time had stood still and we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

Two songs were initially written and recorded, including I Still Have Faith in You, but their release was pushed back to early 2019, then late 2019, but never emerged. Since then the group have continued writing and recording, eventually ending up with a full album of material.

Digitally de-aged avatars of Abba, that will feature in Voyage.

In the interim, their pop cultural heft has continued to grow. The stage musical Mamma Mia! , debuted in 1999, and recently reopened in London’s West End, reintroduced the group’s hits to new generations. A 2008 film version made more than £440m in global box office takings and is an enduring family favourite: it is the UK’s biggest-selling DVD ever. A 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, made £285m globally.

Their ongoing popularity has meant that their 1992 greatest hits collection, Abba Gold, is the longest-running album in the UK album chart. In July, it became the first to surpass 1,000 weeks there, and is currently sitting at No 14.

Long before the musical and movies, however, their song catalogue was already one of the most successful – and brilliant – in all pop music. Having formed in 1972, at the height of their fame in the mid-1970s six out of seven singles in a row reached No 1 in the UK: Fernando, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me. They had three further No 1s and a total of 19 Top 10 hits.

The reunion also brings two pairs of once-married couples back together. Lyngstad and Andersson were engaged in 1971, the same year that Fältskog and Ulvaeus married, but by 1981, both couples had divorced within a year of each other. Their romantic strife was explored with great candour in songs such as The Winner Takes It All, and in the psychodramas of their final album in 1981.

The group fizzled out in 1983 without an official breakup announcement. In the years since, Fältskog released 12 solo albums, most recently A in 2013; Lyngstad released three albums and made occasional one-off recordings.

Andersson and Ulvaeus co-wrote numerous musicals, including Chess with Tim Rice, and in 2013 they worked with EDM producer Avicii to compose the theme for the Eurovision Song Contest , which they had won with Waterloo in 1974.

The group have long denied they would ever perform live again. In 2014, Lyngstad said: “We only have one answer and that is no … No amount of money would change our minds. Maybe we sometimes say it would be good to do a song together again, just a recording and nothing else.”

In 2016, they did perform one song together at a party to celebrate 50 years of the Andersson-Ulvaeus songwriting partnership: The Way Old Friends Do.

Speaking at a London launch event for Voyage, Ulvaeus said the band was as close as they ever were. “It is incredible to be where we are, no imagination could dream up that. To release a new album after 40 years and to still be the best of friends … to still have a total loyalty. Who has experienced that? Nobody … It is such fun and we have been longing for this for such a long time.”

Why do the project now? “We wanted to do it before we were dead,” he said.

Andersson, also appearing, said the worst of the filming was when they had to shave their beards. “I’ve had mine 50 years.”

Ulvaeus said they chose London to host their live show because “London is the best city to be in when it comes to entertainment, theatre, musicals … We have always felt that the Brits see us as their own.”

Asked what the best thing about being in Abba is, Andersson replied, with refreshing candour: “Not having to worry about the money. You are free to do anything, to keep on writing the music.”

ABBA Reunite for First Time in 40 Years, Announce New Album and Digital Concert

By Angie Martoccio

Angie Martoccio

After years of delay and teasing on social media, ABBA have officially reunited, announcing the new album Voyage out November 6th.

Although the Swedish pop group sang “Me and I” at a private gala in 2016 — their first time performing since 1986 — this marks their first time officially reuniting in 40 years. Ahead of the release, they dropped the reflective ballad “I Still Have Faith In You” and the disco gem “Don’t Shut Me Down.”

In addition, ABBA will also perform a digital concert on May 27th, 2022 — which they first announced in 2016. Made through George Lucas’ Industry Light & Magic, Abba Voyage will take place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s arena in London. General tickets are available on September 7th.

“It’s been a while since we made music together,” the band said in a statement. “Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to The Visitors . We simply call it Voyage and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters.”

“It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me with this project,” Andersson said. “If it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat.” Added Anni-Frid Lyngstad: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun, and when Benny called and asked if I’d consider singing some more I jumped at it!”

ABBA

ABBA , one of the most successful music groups of all time, has announced its return nearly 40 years with a new studio album — hear two songs from it here — and a new concert that will see singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and instrumentalists/songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus performing digitally via avatars with a live 10-piece band in a purpose-built arena in London, beginning on May 27, 2022.

The “Voyage” album will be released worldwide on November 5 via Universal Music Group’s Capitol label. The two newly released songs, “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down,” were recorded by the group at Andersson’s Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm and will both feature in the concert. The songs are the first new material from ABBA since the release of the “Under Attack” single in December of 1982, although the members, now all in their 70s, have released several solo projects.

According to the announcement, the digital versions of ABBA have been created “following weeks and months of motion-capture and performance techniques with the four band members and an 850-strong team from Industrial Light & Magic,” the company founded by George Lucas.

Popular on Variety

“ABBA Voyage” will open on May 27 the ABBA Arena, a state-of-the-art 3,000 capacity arena located at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Pre-registration for tickets opens at 6pm Thursday (Sept. 2) on abbavoyage.com with tickets on general sale from Sept. 7.

The announcement follows three-and-a-half years of tantalizing statements from Ulvaeus and Andersson about new music — first two songs, then six, along with some form of virtual performance — being on the way. The pair said in 2019 that the music would be delayed while preparations for the concert were completed, and finally a cryptic message about “ABBA Voyage” was posted on social media last week.

In a lengthy statement released Thursday, the group said:

“It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to [1981’s] ‘The Visitors.’ To tell the truth, the main inspiration to record again comes from our involvement in creating the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of. We’re going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring. Weird and wonderful!

“To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades: Thank you for waiting — it’s time for a new journey to begin.

“We simply call it ‘Voyage’ and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters. With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It’s not easy to explain but then it hasn’t been done before.”

Andersson said, “It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me (Benny) with this project, if it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat. When you come to the arena you will have the four of us together with an absolutely glorious 10-piece band. And even if not in the flesh, we will be right there, thanks to the work of the creative team and ILM.”

Lyngstad said: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun and when Benny called and asked if I’d (Anni-Frid) consider singing some more I jumped at it! And what songs!! My respect and love go out to these exceptionally talented, truly genius songwriters! Such joy it was to work with the group again. I am so happy with what we have made, and I dearly hope our fans feel the same.”

Fältskog said: “When we got back together in the studio I (Agnetha) had no idea what to expect… But Benny’s recording studio is such a friendly and  safe environment, and before I knew it I was really enjoying myself! I can hardly believe that finally, the moment has come to share this with the world!”

Ulvaeus said: “They’re such amazing singers, those two, I (Björn) was completely floored by the way they delivered those songs. They’re true musicians; totally unimpressed by pop star glamour but still having a great time being creative in a recording studio. The “Voyage” project has injected new life into us in more ways than one.”

“So, again, thanks for waiting! We hope to see you in the ‘ABBA Arena’ and yes — see — because we have infused a good deal of our souls into those avatars. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’re back.”

ABBA is one of the most popular musical artists in history, having sold hundreds of millions of albums worldwide since its formation in Sweden 1972. The group’s simple-sounding but highly sophisticated songs have endured since the group, consisting of two married couples, split amid the breakup of the two couples in 1982. They set a template for pop music that has risen to prominence in recent years, exemplified by the work of countrymen Max Martin (who has worked with everyone from Britney Spears to Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake over the past two decades) on the commercial side and Robyn on the innovative side.

While songwriters Andersson and Ulvaeus continued to work together (including a musical, “Chess,” with lyricist Tim Rice in 1984), the four members did not appear together publicly onstage again until 2016.

Producers Svana Gisla and Ludvig Andersson said, “The magic of ABBA and the herculean efforts of this whole magnificent team reaches a long awaited milestone today.  To be able to finally share this endeavour with the world is a proud moment for us and we can’t wait to welcome you to our arena in East London, a place where we are so happy to be.”

Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, said, “From the very beginning of my career, and having had the privilege to work with them directly for many years since, it’s been a tremendous joy to be surrounded by ABBA and their music. Their boundless creativity and timeless melodies make us want to partner with them on everything they do, because we know it will be simply great.”

ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson. Baillie Walsh/Universal Music Group hide caption

ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson.

Nearly 40 years since they last made music together, the members of ABBA are back. The Swedish pop group has announced an upcoming "hologram" concert in London and its first studio album in four decades.

"We took a break in the spring of 1982, and now we've decided it's time to end it," the band announced in a news release. "They say it's foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we've recorded a follow-up to The Visitors ."

ABBA is the acronym from the first name of singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad and instrumentalists-songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. They began in 1970 as a cabaret act. Four years later, they won the Eurovision competition with "Waterloo." They became stars with songs like "Dancing Queen" and "Fernando." Another hit, "Mamma Mia," inspired a Broadway musical and a movie (and its sequel) starring Meryl Streep (and Cher).

ABBA's last album, The Visitors , released in 1981, featured a more sophisticated sound than the group's previous light pop music. By then, one of the band's two married couples had divorced, and the other was about to.

The members are now all in their 70s and have released numerous solo projects. For several years now, ABBA has been teasing about a reunion.

Its new album, Voyage , will be released on Nov. 5. It includes singles "I Still Have Faith in You" and "Don't Shut Me Down," recorded at Andersson's Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm.

In the announcement, ABBA says its inspiration to record again comes from having created "the strangest and most spectacular concert you could ever dream of." Next May, the group will perform digitally with a live band in a specially built arena at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, employing likenesses created by a team from George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic.

"We're going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs on a stage in a custom-built arena in London next spring," reads the announcement. Tickets for the event go on sale Sept. 5.

"We're truly sailing in uncharted waters," the statement continues. "With the help of our younger selves, we travel into the future. It's not easy to explain, but then it hasn't been done before."

ABBA 's groundbreaking virtual concert experience ABBA Voyage is now booking into next year, after opening to glowing reviews in spring 2022.

Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida last performed together in 1982, and this show sees the Eurovision winners and international pop icons recreated in digital 'ABBAtar' form.

Created in partnership with groundbreaking TV and film effects experts Industrial Light & Magic, these figures are the stars of a virtual experience in a real-life concert hall located in London that's been designed especially for the occasion.

As well as all the classics you probably know inside out, the concert also features the band's first new material in several decades, taken from their 2021 album Voyage .

With booking now open for future shows until January 2025, here's how you can see the show.

ABBA Voyage tickets – when is the concert running to, plus start time and running times

abba voyage

ABBA Voyage is now booking until January 5, 2025 , having been extended again from its previous endpoint in late November 2024. The official ABBA Voyage website has the most up-to-date availability information, with a clickable calendar and traffic light system to show ticket availability .

ABBA Voyage shows usually take place on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There are no performances listed for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Eve in 2024, and the ABBA Arena will also be closed on January 1, 2025.

A 1pm matinee has been added on Monday, May 27 with good availability, if you're looking to go soon.

According to the New York Times , planning permission for the ABBA Arena is set to expire in April 2026, with reports suggesting that area of the Olympic Park will then be designated for housing.

Tickets for ABBA Voyage are also available via Ticketmaster . Resale is strictly prohibited although Ticketmaster now operates a verified fan-to-fan ticket exchange system – more details on which are available here .

Meanwhile, other retailers such as Get Your Guide offer a combined package with prices starting from £55.

This includes your ticket (with priority entrance to the venue), and a return coach ticket to London's Victoria coach station on a specially-branded ABBA Voyage electric bus. (If you're travelling from outside of London, you'll need to arrange your own travel to Victoria coach station.)

Access tickets are available to book online via the official ABBA Voyage website, with dedicated email addresses for any related queries. All ticketing is digital, although you can purchase a souvenir printed ticket for an extra fee which will be mailed to you after the show.

The arena features seating, and a standing space (called the Dance Floor, obviously). The seating also includes Dance Booths, which can be booked for groups.

Show times are noted on the official ABBA Voyage website , although it's advised that you check your tickets for the correct performance start time.

We'd also recommend leaving a good amount of time to pass through security checks and ticket scanning on entry. The concert running time is 90 minutes straight through – so no interval.

As for the setlist? Well, no spoilers here – but it's highly likely that you'll be able to experience at least one of your favourite tracks from the ABBA back catalogue, if not more…

abba voyage

The purpose-built, hexagonal ABBA Arena seats 1,650 people, and has standing room for 1,350. According to industry journal Building , it's been "designed as a demountable temporary venue", which means there's the option to dismantle it, relocate it and reassemble it with relative ease.

The arena space has been designed in a way to enable it to be column-free, with a 65-million-pixel screen that wraps around the audience.

The ABBA Arena is located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, right next to Pudding Mill Lane DLR station. There are also 10 parking spaces for blue badge holders which can be reserved in advance via email , and around 100 places to park bicycles near the arena gates.

The arena has step-free entry and as mentioned above, there are access and step-free seating options available once you get inside.

abba voyage

The Guardian , NME , Variety and the Evening Standard were all united in praise for the concert, so let's just say the reviews speak for themselves.

Having been among The Visitors to the show (sorry, we'll show ourselves out), you do need to be prepared to suspend your disbelief to fully immerse yourself in all of ABBA Voyage's visual and sound trickery – but if you do, then you can expect a memorable experience. Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker's description of the concert leaving him in "a state of confusion", as quoted in the New York Times , is somewhat relatable.

Without giving too much away (we don't want to spoil too many surprises after all), while everyone's talking about the visuals – from stunning light fittings to elaborate costumes for the so-called 'ABBAtars' which, per Vogue , were actually made in real life – the sound quality in the arena is simply great. The original recordings of ABBA are complimented by a sensational live band, who also get their moments to shine.

Also, one surprise that's out there in the open thanks to the official ABBA Voyage social media channels – if you're really, really, really lucky, you might be there on an evening when one of actual, real-life ABBA decides to come along and watch the show.

Yes, these are a thing and you can purchase items both at the ABBA Arena and via the online shop .

You can choose from a wide range of ABBA Voyage promotional merchandise including reusable water bottles, posters, magnets, ABBA-branded clothing and, of course, an official programme for the concert.

You can also get classic ABBA output on vinyl , as well as a selection of items commemorating the 50th anniversary of the band's iconic Eurovision-winning track 'Waterloo'.

Unfortunately, the ABBA Voyage cassettes now seem to be sold out on the band's main store (so you may have to try your luck on eBay or purchase via ABBA's US store .

ABBA Voyage is now booking until January 5, 2025. Tickets are on sale via official partner Ticketmaster .

Will ABBA appear at Eurovision for the 50th anniversary of 'Waterloo'?

8 May 2024, 09:16

With Eurovision returning to Sweden for the 50th anniversary of 'Waterloo', ABBA may very well be making an appearance of some kind.

Listen to this article

Speculation has been rife for nearly a year now.

As soon as Sweden's entry Loreen was announced as Eurovision winner of 2023's competition, the rumour mill went into overdrive.

But why? Because 2024 would mark the 50th anniversary of ABBA 's game-changing ' Waterloo ' win, one that changed the face of pop music.

It was serendipity that took the competition back to their native Sweden, surely, with fans hoping that Agnetha , Frida , Benny and Bjorn would take to the stage for one final hurrah.

However, some Eurovision fans thought there were more insidious plans at play, that the competition was "rigged" just so they could pave the way for ABBA to reunite.

  • Waterloo: How ABBA's Eurovision win launched a pop music powerhouse
  • ABBA's 20 greatest ever songs, ranked
  • Who were ABBA before they became ABBA?
  • ABBA Voyage: Reviews and reactions as ABBA bid a euphoric farewell on stage

The awesome foursome broke up in 1982, and whilst they came together for a one-off occasion to mark the debut of ABBA Voyage in 2022, there hasn't been a "proper" reunion with all four on stage singing together again.

Last year, a spokesperson for the band Görel Hanser issued a "clear denial" of a reunion, saying there were "no such plans" and it was "definitely wishful thinking from fans.

Benny himself poured further cold water on the prospect, adding: "I don't want to. And if I don't want to, the others won't. It's the same for all four of us – someone says, 'no' – it's a no."

With Eurovision 2024 inching ever closer, which kicks off in Mälmo, that might not be the case however.

Swedish TV producer Martin Österdahl - the Executive Supervisor of Eurovision - talked to Deadline amid preparations for the competition, hinting at plans for the televised event.

Despite talks of protests, Österdahl wants the focus to be firmly on Sweden's illustrious history with Eurovision.

"We've got Sweden’s historic seventh win, tying the all-time record with Ireland, we’ve got Loreen who is the champion and the only woman to ever win this contest twice."

"And of course, there's this particular group called ABBA that won the contest 50 years ago with 'Waterloo', we will be celebrating all these things," he said.

ABBA's 'Waterloo' win propelled them to global superstardom, inspiring a recent documentary on the group, though Österdahl wouldn't fess up as to what they had planned.

Another Eurovision insider did however claim that the tribute would be "something never seen on TV before".

ABBA Voyage has been a resounding smash hit, with the digital 'ABBA-tars' expected to make a Eurovision appearance.

This has led to speculation that ABBA might appear in their virtual 'ABBA-tar' form which has proved to be enormously successful during their ABBA Voyage run in London.

"We are perhaps the oldest music entertainment show and still going strong, but we always try and make it better and we do a lot of work on how to increase engagement in the shows," Österdahl added, suggesting they'd do what they can to up the stakes.

Given ABBA's reluctance when it comes to a reunion, it looks like their digital avatars might be stepping in, which will be a spectacle in of itself.

If an eye-watering amount of $1 billion can't convince Agnetha, Frida, Benny and Bjorn to don their glittering outfits once again - which was the amount they were reportedly offered two decades ago - it's doubtful Eurovision will.

  • How ABBA's two marriages and divorces split the group apart for nearly 40 years
  • ABBA's albums ranked from worst to best
  • Watch ABBA perform at the peak of their powers when they wowed Wembley Stadium in 1979
  • When unknown ABBA sang ‘Waterloo’ in its original Swedish for their breakthrough TV appearance

Fans shouldn't necessarily give up all hope immediately, however - in an interview with The Sun in 2024, Agnetha seemingly nearly let a secret slip.

"You never know anything about ABBA and when we’re going to…" she said, trailing off before quickly adding: "Well, I won’t say anything about that. I’d rather be quiet."

So who knows? If 'Money, Money, Money' can't make it happen, their 'Waterloo' anniversary could be the catalyst.

Are ABBA going to perform at Eurovision 2024? Interval acts in Sweden revealed

The Eurovision Song Contest returns to Sweden this week and the occasion marks the 50th anniversary of the country's first win with ABBA song Waterloo back in 1974

ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson at an event together in 2022.

  • Updated 08:40, 8 May 2024

There's speculation over whether ABBA will take to the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest later this week to mark the anniversary of them winning the competition.

This year's contest will be hosted by Malin Åkerman, 45, and Petra Mede, 54, in Malmö. Sweden 's now hosting again after having won for a seventh time last year, equaling the record set by Ireland for the most wins in the history of Eurovision.

It also marks the 50th anniversary of Sweden having won the contest for the first time back in 1974, when the country was represented by ABBA. The band performed Waterloo at the Dome in Brighton , with the UK having hosted that year.

There's been rumours that bandmates Agnetha Fältskog , 74, Björn Ulvaeus , 79, Benny Andersson , 77, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad , 78, could reunite for the special occasion. The prospect has however previously been ruled out by Benny.

Addressing the possibility of reuniting on stage, Benny told the BBC last year: "No way!" He added: "I don't want to and if don't want to, they won't go." Björn stated: "We could celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage."

It's however been teased that ABBA could appear at the Malmö Arena in the form of virtual avatars. The band have a virtual concert residency, ABBA Voyage, which launched at the purpose-built ABBA Arena in London back in 2022.

Martin Österdahl, 50, the executive supervisor of Eurovision, told Deadline recently that the annual contest will be "celebrating" ABBA later this week. Although he reportedly wouldn't disclose any details, a source told the outlet that the tribute will be "something never seen on TV before."

Whilst a source told the Sun that ABBA will be "celebrated big time" in the contest, which will hold semi-finals on Tuesday and Thursday, before its grand final on Saturday. The source teased the preference is for virtual avatars.

The source commented: "The group have made it clear they have no interest in performing again but ABBA's music will be a major part of the event with a chunk of time put aside for a tribute after all the acts have performed."

They added: "Bringing part of their ABBA Voyage show to Sweden is really complex because the tech is very expensive and complicated, which is why they had to build an arena for it in East London. Organisers are racing to try and make it possible but otherwise, a selection of stars, likely all from Sweden, will be singing ABBA's music instead."

Although details about the tribute are yet to be announced, organisers have confirmed some interval acts for the shows this week. They include last year's winner Loreen, 40, who first won Eurovision with her song Euphoria back in 2012.

According to the contest's website, the first semi-final will feature a "show-stopping medley" from former contestant Benjamin Ingrosso, 26. There will also be a performance from Johnny Logan , 69, who until Loreen's victory last year was the only performer to have won Eurovision twice. He won for Ireland in 1980 and then 1987, and was a songwriter on Linda Martin 's winning song Why Me? from 1992. There's also set to be an opening act, United By Music, involving the return of Eleni Foureira, 37, Eric Saade, 33, and Chanel, 32.

The second semi-final is set to unite former winners Helena Paparizou, 42, Sertab Erener, 59, and Charlotte Perrelli , 49, for " the world's biggest sing along". Host Petra is due to perform a musical number titled We Just Love Eurovision Too Much at some point and Loreen will return in the grand final.

ABBA issued a statement last month marking the anniversary of their Eurovision victory. It read: "It's slightly dizzying and deeply humbling to think that millions of you who saw us for the first time in the Eurovision final 1974 have passed our music on not only to one generation, but to several. We see evidence of that every time one of us visits ABBA Voyage in London and it's because of this we can celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that event in the knowledge that our songs still resonate around the world .

"It's difficult to comprehend that 50 years have gone by since the four of us waited backstage for the verdicts of all the juries around Europe at the Dome in Brighton. So what were our dreams during those suspenseful moments or in the chaos in the aftermath of the victory we had secured with the smallest margin in Eurovision history? Four different dreams, no doubt, but whatever they were, however grand, reality has surpassed them, that's for sure.

"Many of you were there from the very start and have followed us ever since - for over half a century! Music you discover and learn to love when you grow up or even later in life has a way of staying with you forever. We share that experience with you and to know that our music has become a constant in your lives is a wonderful thing.

"Throughout the years we have been blessed with the outpouring of love from you, our fans. We feel it and we want you to know that hardly a day goes by when we're not reminded of it. To say thank you for what you're giving us without sounding trivial is not easy and this is not a moment for triviality. It is a happy and at the same time solemn moment and we can only hope that you understand how deeply grateful we are for a long, successful career and for your steadfast loyalty and support through the years. Thank you!"

The Eurovision Song Contest semi-finals air on Tuesday and Thursday from 8pm on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds. Whilst the grand final will be broadcast on the same platforms on Saturday from 8pm .

Abba Famously Won Eurovision in 1974, Did You Know These Other Major Stars Once Competed?

W hile not big in America, the Eurovision Song Contest is massive in Europe. It is a way for new and old singers to showcase their talents and the contest has proven to celebrate the best of the best. Started in 1956, the contest has spawned some incredible winners who went on to have very fruitful careers in music. Ahead of the 2024 contest, let’s go over some of the most famous stars who sparked their career by competing, or in one case, almost competing in the highly-publicized event.

1 Celine Dion

The Canadian-born singer has a very impressive voice and is known for hits such as “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic and “The Power of Love.” Over the years, she has proved to be a powerhouse singer and cranked out hit after hit. She competed in the Eurovision Song Contest and won in 1988 with the song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.” Unfortunately, the singer, now 56, has slowed down due to the diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome which caused her to cancel her tour.

2 Olivia Newton-John

The Grease star got her big break in 1965 when she won the television contest Sing, Sing, Sing . In 1974, she placed fourth in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song “Love Live Love.” This was the year that ABBA won. Of course, she went on to have a massive career in music and starred in a few movies. Over her career, she recorded 26 studio albums, 15 Top 10 singles, including five No. 1 singles on Billboard, and won four Grammys. Sadly, she passed away in 2022 after a battle with breast cancer.

3 Julio Iglesias

Before there was Enrique Iglesias , there was his father and fellow singer Julio Iglesias. He took fourth place in the 1970 contest with the song “Gwendolyn.” Prior to becoming a famous Latin pop singer, he was a professional footballer until he had to quit due to injuries. In 2013, he was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. Currently, the 80-year-old is in collaboration with Netflix to create a bio-doc series about his life and career.

The Scottish singer Lulu competed in 1969 which proved to be a controversial year with four joint winners. She was one of them and it caused the entire contest to get a revamp for the following year to avoid ties. She is best known for the song “To Sir, With Love” from the James Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun . At age 75 she still sings and just wrapped her Champagne with Lulu farewell tour.

5 Engelbert Humperdinck

Humperdinck was already pretty famous by the time he competed in 2012 but he didn’t do very well in the contest. He performed “Love Will Set You Free” and came in second to last. Even so, he continued to work and recently released a new album and admitted that he has even more music in the works .

6 Bonnie Tyler

Tyler, best known for her song “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was another artist who competed after she became famous. She represented the UK in 2013 and took 19th place with the song “Believe in Me.” Even though she didn’t win, she got a Eurovision Song Contest Radio Award and continues to make new music and tour to this day.

The iconic group ABBA won in 1974 with the song “Waterloo.” It helped them to gain popularity and they are now known for their hits “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen” among others. While the band separated in the ’80s, they now have a virtual concert called ABBA Voyage featuring their music and exciting technology.

8 Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard was beaten by just one point by Massiel in 1968. Even so, the British singer went on to have a successful career in the UK. He is now 83 years old and just did a farewell tour in 2023.

Enya technically only competed in the lead-in contest but did not get selected. The Irish singer competed with her former group Clannad in 1973 with the song “An Pháirc.” Even though she didn’t make it to Eurovision, she tried and maintained a big career afterward. These days she is a recluse in her Irish castle.

10 Katrina and the Waves

Best known for their mega pop hit “Walking on Sunshine” in the ’80s, Katrina and the Waves won the 1997 contest and became one of the most successful acts. The song “Love Shine A Light” became a huge hit in Europe. The band split up not long after their Eurovision win but Katrina carries on as a solo artist, has a new single out and is currently touring.

The 68th annual Eurovision Song Contest competition begins May 7 and you can find out how to watch it here .

The quartet split up in 1982 after dominating the disco scene for more than a decade with hits like "Waterloo", "Dancing Queen", "Mamma Mia" and "Super Trouper".
