10 of the UK’s best places for scuba diving and snorkelling

From the Orkneys to Dorset these sites offer marine life encounters and opportunities to gain a new skill while on holiday

T aking the plunge in British waters may be a different experience to diving in tropical seas but it rewards divers and snorkellers with historic wrecks, reefs covered with soft corals and scuttling crustaceans. Dive schools offer a good way to get a first taste – and snorkelling is available for everyone who can swim. For certification, many dive schools do the theory part of the training in advance online, completing the skills component in person over a few days – a good way to combine certification and a UK holiday.

Scapa Flow, Orkney

This body of water, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, is home to dozens of wrecks from the first and second world wars, including the scuttled German first world war fleet, a legacy of Scapa Flow’s time as a naval base. While experienced divers will get the most of out of the area (try Huskyan ’s seven-day dive/stay packages, from £685pp), beginners can enjoy a taste of the action via shore dives on the Churchill Barriers, structures built in 1940 to block eastern approaches to the harbour, and the scuttled ships that preceded their construction. Kraken Diving, Scapa’s only dive school, offers guided dives here, as well as guided boat diving for those with more experience. Snorkel safaris are also available. Guided dives with Kraken from £170, try dives £90 , snorkelling £60 pp; full equipment hire from Scapa Scuba £60 a day, air refills from £4

Swanage pier, Dorset

The shallow water beneath this late-Victorian pier teems with life, from edible and spider crabs to brightly coloured cuckoo wrasse, bream and cuttlefish. At just five metres deep, it offers easy diving conditions for beginners, but there’s plenty for more experienced divers, especially those into photography, who’ll appreciate the chance to get up close to the local marine life. Divers Down runs courses and hires out equipment from its shop on the pier, as well as operating two charter boats for trips out to wrecks. Some, such as the Fleur De Lys, a French crabbing boat that sank at 13 metres in 2000, are suitable for beginners to explore. Full equipment hire £60 , air refills from £5, pier diving £1.50pp, local boat dives from £35pp

Porthkerris, Cornwall

Hundreds of ships were dashed to pieces over the centuries on the Manacles and other submerged rocks that line this side of the Lizard peninsula. Many are easily reached on full- or half-day boat trips and many are fairly shallow, which not only increases the likelihood of visibility being good but also makes them accessible for less experienced divers. There’s good shore diving and snorkelling, with Porthkerris Divers , whose protected house reef is home to anemones, sea cucumbers, sponges, sea urchins, crustaceans, cuttlefish, lots of species of kelp and all manner of fish. You just walk into the water from Porthkerris Beach. Portkerris Divers also runs courses. Full equipment hire from £35, air fills from £5, boat dives from £30 per dive, unlimited shore dives £5pp, escorted dives from £40

Lundy, Devon

A familiar name to shipping forecast listeners, this island off the coast of north Devon is known for its birdlife, but there’s a huge amount going on beneath the waves too. The island’s resident population of Atlantic grey seals is the main attraction – these inquisitive creatures are used to humans and it’s not uncommon to find them tugging playfully at divers’ fins. Ilfracombe-based Easy Divers hires gear and runs regular day trips for divers and snorkellers. The dive season runs from May to September. Two guided dives with full equipment hire £177 pp, snorkelling equipment and boat trip £132pp

Farne Islands, Northumberland

Weather-permitting you can dive year-round on the east coast, though the best time of year for interactions with the grey seals that make this their home is late summer and into autumn, before the start of the breeding season. The diving is spectacular whether or not you get to play with the seals, thanks to the sheer rock faces that characterise the underwater world of the Farne Islands. Crevices in these walls abound with lobsters, shrimp and edible crabs, as well as soft corals, nudibranchs (sea slugs) and anemones. There are plenty of shallow, protected sites here for beginners; nervous newbies will get the most out of the area by hiring the services of a local divemaster as a guide. Boats depart from Seahouses. Day’s diving (two dives) with Billy Shiel’s Boat Trips £50 pp, air refill £6, day’s diving with full equipment £150pp, guiding £50

Stony Cove, Leicestershire

There’s been diving at this flooded quarry since 1960, though a lot has changed at the site since local scuba pioneers first started exploring here. Today, you’ll find a range of sunken vehicles to explore, including an aeroplane cockpit, a helicopter, an Elizabethan merchantman and a bus, all positioned in terraced dive areas that are graded to reflect difficulty. It’s open for diving and snorkelling 362 days a year, with averages temperatures ranging from 18C in August to 4C in March. For the best visibility – up to 20 metres – visit between the end of October and Christmas. Night diving – yes really – is available on the first and third Wednesday of the month. Dive training courses run regularly at weekends, with additional midweek courses laid on, on demand, if at least two people are booking. Full equipment hire £48.20 , diving £25 pp, snorkelling £8 pp, stoneycove.com

Basking sharks, north Cornwall

The world’s second largest fish – basking sharks can grow to up to 12 metres long – comes to the south and west coast of the UK each year, timing their arrival with the spring and summer plankton blooms. They arrive in Cornwall and continue their journeys north as far as John o’Groats. The best way to experience these creatures in the water is snorkelling rather than diving, as they mainly feed just beneath the surface. Newquay-based Atlantic Diving runs three-hour snorkel safaris throughout the summer (the main shark spotting season is May to July but they continue to appear as late as October), putting on a boat whenever local fishers report seeing sharks. As such, advance booking isn’t possible – you’ll need to phone for availability (details on website). Atlantic Diving also runs dive trips to the more than 200 wrecks in the area. Snorkel safari including snorkelling equipment and wetsuit £90 pp

St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve, Berwickshire

Tiny white sea stars, sea urchins and a type of soft coral known as dead man’s fingers, cover the rocks all along with patch of protected coastline, while lobsters stare out from crevices and flat fish hide themselves in the sand on the seabed. Dive companies running boats out of the small harbours at St Abbs and Eyemouth include DiveStay (half a day diving from £45pp) but you’ll need to bring your own gear. Not to worry if that’s not an option because Snorkel Wild runs small guided snorkelling trips (two to four people, £30pp, equipment hire £10) that explore Coldingham Bay and its surroundings. Perfect for families, with kids as young as six able to take part if accompanied by an adult.

Isle of Portland, Dorset

There are dozens of wrecks to dive off Portland, from submarines to paddle-steamers, with something for divers of all experience levels. A boon of Dorset diving, particularly for those combining diving with other holiday pursuits, is the fact that you can pop out for a single dive and be back at the harbour within a couple of hours, rather than spending all day out on a boat. There’s plenty to explore in and around the harbour, with drift dives offering a thrilling way of seeing a large area in a short space of time. Local operator Dive Beyond runs boat charters and courses for all levels, as well as hiring out equipment – its online booking process is one of the more streamlined available. Full equipment rental from £40 , air fills £5, shore dives from £25 pp, boat dives from £32pp

Holy Island, Anglesey

The squiggly coastline between Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay has beaches that are seemingly made for easy walk-in, walk-out shore diving and snorkelling. Their shallow, protected coves are untroubled by currents and allow you to serenely explore underwater gullies that are a haven for ballan, cuckoo and corkwing wrasse and, if you’re lucky, dogfish. SBS Rib Charter runs short boat rides out to Holy Island’s wrecks and reefs, several of which are suitable for beginners. You’ll need to bring all your own gear as there’s nowhere nearby that hires it.

With more pressures on our time than ever before, and flight departures offering improved flexibility, Regaldive are finding it increasingly common to arrange short breaks for our keen divers itching to get their diving fix!

If you just can't find time for a full one or two week diving holiday but would love to don mask and fins and slip into your wetsuit for at least a few days of fantastic warm water diving this summer, then Regaldive may just have the perfect solution. 

For many years we've been arranging shorter breaks on request for our clients, but recently we've noticed a real trend for four or five night stays, with long weekends or mid-week mini getaways on the increase. With a great amount of choice in flight connections, Regaldive are pleased to be able to offer the flexibility to stay four or five nights in either  the Red Sea ,  Lanzarote  or Malta & Gozo .

The island's history as disputed land has led to an impressive collection of ship, plane and submarine wrecks that have really put Malta on the map for wreck diving. Dozens of shipwrecks, historic and artificial mean that Malta is a key technical diving destination but it's also an ideal place to learn to dive.

Gozo is one of the few remaining unspoilt Mediterranean islands and a haven for divers', with its simple, rural charm. Underwater arches and tunnels have been carved out of the coastline and offer divers endless points of interest around its 27-mile coastline of natural rugged beauty and normally great underwater visibility.

With several flight departures each week, travel for four or five nights and enjoy up to three dives per day - plus night dives! Log up to 10 dives in just three days! 

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Situated just off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Only four hours flight away, Lanzarote is an ideal destination for UK divers: combining year-round warm temperatures and stunning diving. 

Lanzarote's volcanic landscape that is so impressive on the surface is equally as awe-inspiring underwater, with lava flows and cave formations providing divers with some fantastic areas to explore. 

Divers are well catered for thanks to the balmy climate and stunning diving, including reefs, caves and wrecks. Lanzarote is suitable for divers of all levels, offering bays protected by rocky outcrops suitable for beginners as well as plenty of options for the more experienced diver, with many drop-offs, wrecks and caves to explore. The harbour wall wreck dive site is a designated Underwater Park containing a number of wrecks. 

The rocks are covered in anemones, sponges and soft corals and are home to a variety of marine life, including grouper, tuna, barracuda, monkfish, moray, octopus, rays and seahorses. At certain times of the year, it is also possible to see dolphins and whales.

With the convenience of regular flights from most regional UK airports, divers can travel for four or five nights and maximise their diving time with the convenience of a four-hour flight from the UK.

Fancy diving somewhere a little different? The island of Sardinia has a colourful history, warm climate, a scenic coastline and some intriguing underwater highlights. It’s also a fantastic destination to take your non-diving, beach-loving friends. Flight time is only 2 hours 20 minutes. There are several charter and scheduled airlines flying regularly, in season from May to October.

Divers head to the Emerald Coast in the North East to dive the sites of the marine park in La Maddalena archipelago, Palau Sardinia and Lavezzi (Corsica). Suitable for all abilities the topography is granite, with swim-throughs, overhangs, sponge-encrusted caves, huge gorgonian fans and drop-offs. Plus there’s the wreck of the Angelika cargo ship to explore. Marine life is plentiful and expect to see plenty of nudibranch, spiny lobster and octopus plus huge grouper, Mediterranean eagle rays and barracuda at the 40+ dive sites in the region.

One of the best dive destinations in the world, the Red Sea is just a five-hour flight from the UK, making a long weekend or mid-week getaway a real possibility. Take advantage of regional departures and choose from a range of Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada, El Gouna, Safaga, Marsa Alam and Hamata - for anything from three to six nights!

We have just returned from two weeks at Liquid in Dumagete, the resort was excellent in every respect our room was spacious had all the facilities we required and was kept spotlessly clean. The food was excellent and the bar/catering facilities very informal with attentive and friendly service. The diving was not the most testing we have done but was very enjoyable both from the boat or from the shore, the area is certainlky worth a visit if you want to see frog fish, they are everywhere all sizes and colours not sure we had a dive when we didnt see some. Apo island was well woth bthe long boat ride the corals among the best we have ever seen. The dive centre staff, the guiodes and the boat (and Jeep) crews were all knowledgeable friendly and looked after us very well (i still find it hard to stand back while someone else insists on sorting out my gear for me). ll in all a brilliant holiday and we will be retuning. We had a fantastic 11-night stay at Atlantis Dumaguete. The resort itself was very good – lovely food, almost all waiter-served with a different menu every day; beautiful gardens and a lovely beach; and a very good and extremely reasonable spa. The dive centre couldn’t do enough for me; they were happy to run local boat dives for a single diver, were very good a critter-spotting, and did all the carrying of equipment, and washed all my gear for me at the end of the holiday. Our 2 centre diving holiday in the Philippines, organised by Marcelina Jesus from Ultimate Diving, was faultless and well thought out, it was only the local weather conditions, road infrastructures and our lack of speaking the local language that prevented it from being 100% for us. The diving. Well what can I say. For anyone who enjoys diving wrecks, I fail to see how this coud be beaten. Up to 4 dives per day, I did 30 dives John 32 out of a possible 34. Average depths 30 – 40 meters. The conditions made the diving very easy. No current, good viz, (though the sea itself was often quite milky) easy bouancy and good dive guides. All this made decompression almost a pleasure. Clarity of the water inside the wrecks was incredible and with the help of Dave our guide we penetrated deep into the wrecks including a number of enine rooms. John has become an engine room junkie. So I think you will have guessed that this was one of my best dive holidays ever. Read Review

Greg and I had a great 10 days and felt that the holiday was extremely good value for money. The way that Scuba Addicts work with the two different venues really worked with the different diving and the last day also gave us the opportunity to see lists of wildlife such as hippos, giraffes, zebras, eagles, crocs and was a perfect end to the week. The place was great, the accommodation was great, the staff at Villa Almarik were great, the guys at Gangga divers were great, the diving was very good. I must admit one of the best run and friendliest places I have ever stayed and I have been to a good many places on holiday around the world. It is very much a backpackers resort basic but a great atmosphere and value for money. From what I was told March/April is the best time to go just on the end of their wet season and before peak season when it is rammed. Read Review

We had a brilliant two weeks diving at Magic Oceans, the resort was intimate (a little like a liveaboard but on land) The accommodation was comfortable spacious and had all the facilities that we required. The diving was not particularly testing though on some dives there was some current, but there was lots to see, though sadly the whale shark seen on the house reef the day before we arrived didn’t return while we were there. All staff were friendly courteous and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them to ensure we had an enjoyable time whether that was diving, at the bar or in the dining room. The arrangements by Ultimate Diving were first rate as always with plenty of communication before we travelled to make sure everything as in order and even a last minute change of return flights was dealt with promptly professionally and communicated to as and the issue resolved to our satisfaction. We have already booked our next diving trip to the Maldives in September 2016, with them and are already making enquiries about a trip in early 2017. We cannot recommend Marcelina and Ultimate Diving highly enough, we are always more than happy to entrust them with our holiday arrangements. Read Review

Just returned from a weeks liveaboard in the Maldives on Emperor Voyager. The crew, food and diving were all excellent. The holiday offered the opportunity to undertake 17 dives including three night dives. During these dives we had encounters with Shark, Whale Shark and Mantas. The highlight being the two night dives where we spent almost an hour watching Mantas feed and Nurse Sharks and Rays up close and personal. This was some pretty challenging but ultimately very rewarding diving, I dived the southern itinerary. The best dives were dives in the channels at the outside of the reef, looking for palegics often at depth in specific spots often along ridges or shelves in the coral. When the current was strong, you could dive the site relatively easily but only if you stuck to the specific dive technique of hugging the bottom and staying out of the current. This could lead to consistently deep diving. If you drifted too shallow, the dives could all of a sudden become a lot more strenuous. Saying that the guides took us on conservative dive profiles. Nitrox I would say was essential. We were almost always alone at dive sites which was excellent. The crew were all super helpful and really friendly. I thought the dive guides were very experienced and generally top quality. Read Review

Ultimate Diving were very efficient in organising my liveaboad trip to Sipadan. They made travelling very easy with well organised pickups and flights. Sipadan lived up to its reputation as one of the top world dive experiences. The boat is showing its age but we were told it is due to be replaced next year with a high standard vessel which is being purpose built right now. Hope fully the prices won’t go up too much. Our daughter (aged 12) was taken through her Open Water Diver Course with individual tuition and I felt totally confident in leaving her in very capable hands. The diving was varied to suit individual abilities, and there are some lovely dive sites in the area – reached by Gangga Divers two great dive boats. Ultimate Diving offer a very professional service, information delivered and questions answered promptly. Tell them what you would like in your holiday and they produce an itinerary, that in our experiences with them, is pretty spot on. If anything is not just quite right, no problems, they come right back with alternatives. All the staff we have dealt with have been really knowledgeable, therefore on arrival at our various destinations and resorts, it has been what we were expecting. The hotel experience was very good. The food was better than we expected maid service efficient & totally unobtrusive. A couple of things could have been improved. There was no folder in the room with hotel service information, general tourist information etc, which is unusual. As we had a late check-out (flight at 19:15) it would have been good to have the use of a room for the time after check-out at 12:00 (even if we had to pay) but this wasn’t available. The dive shop was efficient, friendly & helpful. We did nearly all our diving on the house reef, which we enjoyed. Only drawback was the weather – north-westerly winds on several days meant shore diving wasn’t available. We dived a bit more intensively on the good days to make up. Read Review

We have been very happy with the service we have received from Marcelina at Ultimate Diving for our diving holidays at Layang Layang (2013) and Raja Ampat (2015). Right from the first enquiry I have found UD to be great when corresponding to emails and basic mundane enquiries. it was good to meet up with Marcelina at the Birmingham Dive Show to chat things through. The holiday experience was excellent from the service, the crew to the most awesome diving. One day we saw 9 whale sharks, hundreds of Hammerheads, sea lions and some beautiful reef fish. The Carpa Vita is an excellent Liveaboard boat, which is run by an excellent, enthusiastic and helpful crew who’s only job it seems is to make your holiday one to remember. The accommodation aboard the Carpa Vita is to a very high standard, the ladies might want a hair dryer, but everything else is there. As for the diving, well, I got what I paid for, Manta’s, Whalesharks, Sharks, Macro life and everything in between. With a water temperature of between 29-30 deg. C I was never cold and with up to four dives a day (most days) I got to see a lot. If diving is your first love then the Carpa Vita has to be your first choice, it’s eat, dive, eat dive, eat dive, eat dive and sleep. Read Review

Our experience with using Ultimate Diving was very good. The booking was easy and professionally carried out. We stayed at the Oasis Dive Resort, Marsa Alam, Egypt. It was the perfect place to enjoy a great diving and snorkeling location whilst staying at a relaxing, informal and quiet hotel, whose architecture was sensitive to its desert environment and whose staff were friendly and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our 13 days diving at Captain Don’s Habitat. The staff at the hotel, Rum Runners restaurant and the dive centre made us feel very welcomed and did their best to make our stay enjoyable. The diving was excellent and certainly as good as any other warm water diving we have experienced. One highlight was the fluorescent night dive provided by Bonphoto. We have never experienced a night dive like it in 27 years of diving. It provided a completely different view of the coral and night creatures. We are already planning to go back next year. What a fantastic holiday we had . Walls of sharks, millions of morays, tons of turtles, sealions, seahore, batfish, frogfish,penguins,iguana and tortoise to name just a few. Jon enjoyed his birthday cake at the Sonesta and is now enjoying New Zealand. This was my first time to the Galapagos Islands and it lived up to expectations below the waves and ashore. Just back from a fantastic and sometimes challenging week in Chuuk. I met up with Dave and we spent a lot of time together above and below the water which was nice. The diving is deep and lots of penetrations, it certainly is not for the feint hearted. The boat and crew/guides were excellent and the food very good. The diving was what I expected and a little more. I was quite pleased with the variety of dives (even when visiting the same site a second time). It is worth commenting there was little big stuff (except 1 large Manta) but this was probably due to the season. Reefs seem healthy with plenty of life. Hotel (and Dive centre) had all booking details already to hand so it went easily and well. The hotels experience was very good. The site is quite remote from the rest of the urban areas of Grenada. BUT – it is probably in one of the nicest parts of the island (next to St Georges University) so it felt pretty safe. The hotel was quiet – even ‘though it was apparently fully booked on 2 of the days I was there. At no time was it crowded, noisy etc The dive centre operation was good. Staff was helpful and knowledgeable. Easy going but very safety conscious with clear briefings and always taking surface markers with them. I did not use rental kit but I had a good look at their stuff and it was in good condition and I would have been happy to use it. he boats were good. They all had shade. Water was provided on all boats and you were encouraged to use it. The team checked to see who was nitrox qualified and whilst they would often set up kit for you (something I am not used to and will only go and do it all again myself anyway!) they will make Nitrox divers confirm the reading and sign for it (as usual I was bolshie and did it myself anyway). Bananas and tea between dives, they also did most of the hard work packing up afterwards for most of the day divers (often University students). Even the snorkellers who joined the boat on some trips got clear briefings, a guide in the water and if necessary – swimmers life vests. Read Review

1. The holiday was first class value for money. You get what you pay for, so providing you are not expecting a 5 star hotel for a cheap price; it is a very good example of a 3 star hotel. 2. The diving experience was excellent. The dive centre manager ( Rudiger) couldn’t have been more laid back and helpful. A real cool dude! 3. Pick-up and transfer was very good. My only criticism was the vehicle; it reeked of fuel fumes and made me feel very poorly. I asked them to change the vehicle for the return journey and they did so. 4. Sadly the hotel in parts is run down, there was no WIFI in the room, no TV and the shower wasn’t the best (basics really) However the staff were brilliant in every way possible, the food was very good and plenty of it and it was spotlessly clean. So the latter made up for some missing items. 5. The dive centre was a very good experience .The choice of guides were first class , I had 2 at different times, both were very experienced and knowledgeable. They knew the dive sites very well and knew where to find the best examples for the diver to see. Read Review

Kungkungan Bay Resort (KBR) is an amazing diving destination, though not testing technically the diving is different and the things that can be seen are almost unbelievable. The accommodation is first rate, spacious comfortable and private, the food is excellent though the menu choices are a little limited; the dive centre is also a little basic so go well prepared. the dive guides are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble for them from setting up your Gear when you first arrive, changing your tanks after each dive, to washing everything after the final dive ready for packing. Having visited to celebrate a special birthday we envisaged that this would be a once in a lifetime trip, but we will certainly be returning at some point in the future. Read Review

Once again the whole diving experience at Magic Island was faultless. All members of the team worked really hard to ensure that everyone had a very enjoyable time. The Dive Guides on the boats also did their very best to help find those bizarre critters that we so like looking at under the water. When back on shore the service was exemplary. Sting Ray was outstanding. All crew very friendly, helpful, conscientious, and competent. Diving was the best we have ever had, dive guides all very competent, knew where to find the mantas and sharks! Food excellent considering the size of kitchen, island visits were an unexpected bonus. They seemed to go the extra mile to make sure our week was superb. Cabin was fine although bathroom was a bit grungy. Bandos is fine, although we found it quite impersonal. Everyone very polite and efficient but not much effort to communicate. A bit soulless. Food and room very good, snorkelling also very good so it met our needs. Thank you for yet another great diving holiday organised through Ultimate diving, after visiting the Philippines in 2012 and the Maldives in July of this year I thought it would be highly unlikely that I would have a better holiday for a long while however my recent trip to Bali exceeded the high standards of previous holidays organised by yourselves. The hotel was very good with lovely rooms which were kept spotlessly clean and the open air en-suite was a new experience, even though there was no bar the hotel was only 10-15 minutes walk from the main village with several excelent restuarants and bars. The dive centre was also excelent with great dive sites, very nice dive boats and knowledgable and friendly guides to help you get the most from the dive experience. We have just returned from 8 days in Sharm El Sheikh staying at the Camel Club, the hotel was excellent, (though it is worth upgrading to a superior room so that you have a balcony) rooms were clean and functional and staff friendly and helpful. The resort of Naama Bay is what it is, a very vibrant and busy place in the evenings, lots of places to eat and drink generally not to expensive. We dived with Camel dive centre every day and again the staff were helpful and friendly whether in the dive center on the boats or the dive guides. We did go on the speed boat diving excursion on one day which was well worth it. We will definitely be returning as soon as we can. The arrangements were as always well executed by the team at Ultimate Diving, the transfers to and from the airport to the hotel were faultless, and as with the Camel Club, we will be using Ultimate Diving to arrange our next holiday. I was not particularly seeking a “ value for money “ break – for me it was an opportunity to dive, at a premium time of year, and respecting that I would incur a single person supplement. I appreciate that I could have secured more favorable prices at other times of year. Yes – absolutely, Sharm was a destination high on my priority list, and I shall be returning at some point in the future The ground organisation, transfers, hotel check in and general communication was comprehensive – my baggage exceeded 23.5kg but this was not questioned, either at Gatwick or Sharm. The pick up’s were on time, were waiting for me, and all was fine. Booking with Camel, with all facilities in one location was ideal for me, as all I wished to do was dive. The added benefits of the various restaurants, bars, and pool were a bonus. The night club next door will not suit everyone, with loud music until the early hours, but fortunately I was too tired from diving for this to affect me! Camel dive were very well organised, and safe. An English speaking guide was allocated to me, and I found Deniz to be very helpful. Some of the instructors/ guides joined us in the bar on New Years eve, and generally were a sociable bunch. For me, the holiday did exactly what I required, although quite obviously certain aspects will not suit everyone. For me, I shall be returning and will score this 8. Read Review

Lee Thorneycroft arrived back from the Red Sea and had only positive things to say! During a conversation with Marcelina he spoke highly of all aspects of the holiday. Overall he said the he “can’t fault it, everything went brilliantly.” Speaking of the PADI advanced open water diver course which he took at the Inmo Divers Home he joked that there was “lots of studying” and compared it to a degree, however thought the practical tests were great and was impressed with his instructor, whom he thought was extremely patient. Through the duration of his trip he had 13 good 45 minute dives and described the Red Sea diving as “beautiful, great dive sites in Dahab, incredibly diverse aquatic life.” All the paper from you guys arrived and everything was how it should be, the transfers were fine, the second I arrived at the airport they were waiting for me and assisted with visas etc. The equipment was perfect, everything was great and I can’t fault it, I met some good people and saw much more of the Red Sea than expected. Over the last two years, I have been on two different dive holidays with Ultimate Diving, and would not hesitate to use them again. Both destinations were top quality in terms of the diving experience and in terms of accommodation. Chris felt that his holiday to the Philippines was good value for money and that the diving destination was absolutely spot on, no issues what-so-ever. I would rate the holiday a nine out of ten. Both hotels were very good and the resort was beautiful and peaceful. The pickup and drop off from the airport was also good with all the taxi drivers on time and helpful. I was a first time diver and the dive centre was great, with good facilities and very helpful staff. Sue my instructor was fantastic, meticulous but also entertaining. I was on my own so I found the evenings a little quiet but it is perfect if you are traveling as a couple or with a group of friends. My wife and I went to Magic Island not exactly knowing what to expect, what a gem of a place. The accommodation was first rate well cared for and adequate for our needs. The staff were very friendly, helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble for them.The food was excellent and even though as we are both vegetarians we were well looked after and can have no complaints about any of the meals. The diving was very good generally in small groups with friendly and knowledgeable guides (we were able to see a whale shark, pygmy seahorse and mandarin fish during our stay so couldn’t be much better than that) the only comment we would make about the diving is that it is all a bit the same as apart from Pescador Island all the dive sites are along the same reef wall, but they were still very good and some quite challenging in a strong current. The resort had the feel and atmosphere of a liveaboard, particularly with everyone eating together. We will certainly be returning in the future to enjoy the whole experience again, well worth the long journey. Read Review

I would recommend this holiday to others. It is an easy to reach destination and a good boat to be on. The crew work incredibly hard and with up to four dives per day it is good value for money plus Nitrox is thrown in for free! Sadly no pelagics but I am a v. spoilt diver and was disappointed that we had no shark sightings! Liveaboard was just great/ fantastic food and very helpful crew. Nothing was too much trouble. Our trip was for two people, one diver and one snorkeller. It was also a two centre trip. We spent ten days on the Palau Aggressor II liveaboard, followed by seven days on Yap, also for diving. It took three days to get there, but was definitely worth the trip. The diving was fabulous, as was the snorkelling, There were mantas, sharks, eagle rays, endless smaller fish and critters and the coral was excellent. There was an opportunity for a land tour of Peleliu during the Aggressor trip, which was well worth it, and of course there was Jellyfish Lake, which was amazing. I am not usually given to superlatives, but this trip was definitely worth them! We moved to Yap for the second part of the holiday, to the Manta Ray Bay hotel. The welcome was lovely, especially as it was a middle of the night transfer. The diving started late on the first day, to accommodate us, which was a nice touch. The crew were fab, and very responsive to my needs as a snorkeller as well as the divers. We had plenty of time after the diving to explore the land, if we wanted, and the hotel organised a morning tour for us, which was very informative. As you can probably guess, we really enjoyed it. Lahami Bay is set in very attractive & well maintained grounds. Our rooms were spacious, clean & comfortable, with a lovely view of the extensive, very clean, beach & sea. The food was good, lots of fresh produce & freshly baked items daily & great puddings! Excellent staff, everyone was very pleasant. Fantastic snorkelling! - Big Reef, Baby Reef or Banana Reef, where to go? As Lahami Bay is the only resort at this location, you often felt that you had the reef to yourself, you just saw the occasional divers & a few other snorkelers. Airport transfers – no problems, as arranged. We both had a wonderful trip, I would highly recommend both the hotel & the reefs, everyone we spoke to were returning visitors. We enjoyed our holiday, the diving was great. Every year there seem to be more fish probably due to the marine reserve. We were in one of the refurbished rooms at CDs. Very comfortable and kept clean. Walk-in shower room with really good modern plumbing and plenty of hot water. The dive centre was as good as ever. Same staff as previous years. Everything went well, The holiday was good value for money. We have been to Sharm a number of times, but also I have dived in a number of resorts around the world and from my experience I believe it would be difficult to find anywhere as good and organised as Emperor Divers and the holiday location. The ground organisation, transfer pick-up, hotel check-in and general communication went problem free. The hotel for us is a place to wash, have breakfast and sleep, it is not the sort of place I would stay with my partner but as a diver who is diving every day it does the job. Its clean, staff are helpful and friendly and the breakfast while basic hits the spot. Emperor Divers are a top drawer dive centre, good equipment; knowledgeable guides and the boats are clean serving an excellent lunch with a friendly and helpful crew. Overall I have to give the holiday 10, even though the hotel is very basic, but I know what to expect and it provides what I want. I am sure I will be in touch in the future to organise my next trip. Please find enclosed a small token of our appreciation for the organisation of the trip to Cocos Island. The whole trip went without a hitch. Every bus appeared on time, every hotel was expecting us, clean and comfortable and all the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Without exception though, was Okeanos Aggressor. The boat, crew, food and accommodation were first class and to be recommended to everyone and anyone. The diving lived to up expectations (although the crew reckoned it was only average, so another trip could be on the cards). The weather was also exceptional as we had calm conditions all time and very little rain. We had a really good time, the crew on the boat were fantastic, the food was amazing and the diving was superb, a lucky combination of all on a liveaboard. On our check dive we had mantas, schools of hammerheads and dolphins. Other sightings included tiger and Galapagos sharks, a phenomenal experience! After the first dive and seeing so many sharks, we thought it was quite nice and almost took them for granted. The diving here was spectacular. The boat was not glamorous but very clean and comfortable. The cabins were of reasonable size with a double and a single bunk allowing for extra storage space. Towels were changed every couple of days and after dives you get a guide waiting for you with a nice hot towel and great snacks. Read Review

We are still in Malaysia, returning to UK tomorrow, relaxing after our 5 day trip to Layang Layang. We both thoroughly enjoyed Layang Layang, the diving was better than we expected, we saw hammerheads, manta, sharks, devil rays, large schools of fish as well as small stuff which kept my photographer husband entertained. The dives were guided well, the guide made sure everyone got to see the small creatures (pygmy seahorses, leaf fish) and diving was well organised and safe. The resort is very ‘tired’, refurbishment is well overdue, the staff were all very good, food was plentiful and very tasty (catered for European and Asian divers), nice pool, plenty of sun beds; we would certainly return, it was a very friendly place. Your arrangements were fine, it all worked well, we will be happy to book our future diving with Ultimate Diving. Overall would rate the resort 7 out of 10, think the place could be updated. Holiday description: 9 nights on-board the MV Mermaid II for the Bali/Komodo/Bali route The diving was fantastic with a huge variety of dive sites and marine life, especially for divers who are interested in Macro dives. The island excursion to “Komodo” was a great experience and a good chance to spend some time on dry land after several days aboard the boat. We loved Dahab and our accommodation; the negatives relate to the weather not anything to do with the holiday itself. Some days were very windy, great for the wind surfers but making swimming and snorkelling difficult or impossible. It was never possible to have the recommended dinner by the sea at Nesima because of the wind. Susanna at Christina Hotel said that the climate in Dahab is changing and that November is becoming a windier and more unpredictable month. The answer seems to be to go slightly earlier. I was pleased with the original cost of the holiday. Thank you so much for sorting it out for us. The ground organisations was great – we were met as we entered the terminal building and our visas were ready so we arrived at the hotel one hour after landing. Our return trip to the airport with the same guide and driver was equally smooth. The guide, a young man whose name I do not know, was very helpful. Check-in was fine for us but possibly not for Susanna because we arrived so early. She had to get out of bed to give us a tour of the facilities and explain how things worked. I made my booking with Ultimate Diving at very short notice and they were able to help me arrange diving and accommodation exactly where and when I wanted, answering all my questions and accurately re-assuring me that the trip matched my requirements. Borneo Divers on the island of Mabul, was an excellent choice, very relaxed, but professional environment, great mix of people and access to some wonderful dive sites. Firstly the diving was the best organised and effortless diving that we have experienced. Everything went like clockwork, The mantra from all of the Lotus Bungalows and Gangga diving personnel was “you are on holiday – enjoy” and they did their very best to make this so. The hotel has a glorious setting, however no beach or bar, drinks are ordered from the restaurant and brought to you, it is within a sedate walking distance of the local bars, restaurants and amenities, no television (a plus for us) but they do have a collection of character cats (a plus for Ruth) and free Wi Fi. To keep this short, if you want 5 star accommodation find a 5 star hotel if you want a 6 star commitment to enjoying your diving holiday in a very relaxed friendly but professional atmosphere we recommend, unreservedly, Lotus Bungalows and Gangga Divers. The Magic Island Resort was fabulous !!!!! Attention to detail at it’s utmost. In 35 long haul trips many being 2 centre trips we have never found a better resort. Could not fault it in any way. Welcoming, excellent food, terrific service, nothing too much trouble and the proprietors are about every day mixing with the guests ensuring that you have every thing that you could possibly want. The diving was well organised with high quality hire kit. Dives were varied and well briefed beforehand. Excellent divemasters and boat crew operating from good quality boats, although once again this type of boat would not have been easy for anyone with mobility issues. This was a great holiday experience. From the conversations with Marcelina at Ultimate Diving and the paperwork received to confirm the holiday and all the travel details to the seamless airport-taxi-ferry-hotel transfers all was exactly as described. A very friendly hotel literally a stone’s throw from the water and some fabulous restaurants a couple of minutes walk scattered around Xlendi Bay (The Boathouse food was excellent). Moby Dives just around the corner with friendly and helpful instructors and some great one on one tuition. The trip was excellent value for money, with diving trips and a nice hotel included in a very affordable price. The organisation was excellent, as we arrived at the airport there was a guide waiting for us and to help us through passport control, we were then taken straight to the vehicle for the transfer to the hotel. Our guide then arranged the time to pick us up and details of how to contact him if we needed any help. The staff at check in were excellent and quickly sorted the whole group into their rooms. The hotel was as special as it looked in the marketing material, the central courtyard area with the dive school, pool and restaurant made for the perfect setting for all the group activities. The dive centre was part of the hotel and was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful and the dive guides knew loads about the local area and the marine life. I have just returned from my second stay at Inmo booked through Ultimate Diving and had a wonderful week away. As before, everything ran like clockwork, the airport pickups and transfers went smoothly and after an hour we were at the hotel being met with a cold drink and a very warm welcome. In my opinion our week at Inmo was excellent value for money and I would rate it 10 out of 10. I am returning again for the 3rd time in a few months and have every intention of staying there on many more occasions in the future. It feels like being at home, it’s a very special place. Inmo Dives Home… is what it says. It’s a home away from home, you’re not treated like a guest your treated like family, the staff there cannot do enough for you. If you want to take your family with you diving Inmo is the place to go in Dahab. I travelled alone and was not alone from the moment I was there, everyone makes you welcome. I just wanted to write and say what a fantastic time we had staying in Dahab at the Nesima Resort. This was our first ever visit to Egypt and we weren’t disappointed. We really enjoyed our diving holiday organised by Ultimate Diving, to Dahab, Egypt. It’s so much easier to have all the components of the holiday sorted out beforehand, by specialists. This meant all we had left to worry about was buying food and souvenirs! We really enjoyed the holiday but what a journey! 4 flights was just too much to take, though it was much better on the return journey, those few hours in the hotel in Manila made all the difference. The Hotel Christina has friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are good in size with balconies; the hotel is positioned in an excellent location close to sea and dive centre. Breakfast was a little basic but the standard was good, especially the pancakes. Beer price was reasonable. Dinner was good, tasty and not expensive. Inmo Divers are a very established, safe, friendly and busy dive centre. Excellent value package through Ultimate Diving, much cheaper than booking it in resort. As a club (10 divers) we had two guides and freedom to choose our dive sites. They did 2 night dives. Well sorted out for Bedouin cafes/restaurants to have somewhere to sit out of the sun or sunbathe, get drinks and lunch and to keep your gear safe. Well organised, excellent hire kit if needed. The actual diving was great and the highlight for most of our group was seeing a seahorse. The transfer was in a good quality coach with safe drivers (such a change from the usual Dahab transfer). November 2009 saw Belper Sub Aqua Clubs trip to Magic Island Dive Resort, Cebu in the Philippines. This was our first liveaboard in Egypt and was a great experience, the dive guide and the crew on Gazhala one made this a memorable holiday. We couldn’t fault the Christina in any way. It was excellent. Inmo were in the main brilliant and very well organised. We had the best time. Mandy and I got in 23 dives each. The kids dived between 20 and 24 times each and all passed their Advanced. We were pretty well matched experience wise with the groups we were in and made some good friends. After returning from our diving holiday to Egypt we would like to thank you for your kind help and support concerning our return flight after the collapse of X L airlines. However, the CAA number we were given gave us different information every time we rang but due to the number of people stranded abroad this was understandable. When we rang you to voice our concerns you immediately e-mailed the general manager (Mr Nagui El Shaer), at the Noria hotel (who was totally unaware of our problem) and from that point we couldn’t have asked for better service. On the day of our departure he arranged for two people from the hotel to escort us to the airport and they stayed with us until we had checked our bags in. The hotel manager also said that if we didn’t get on the flight we could return to the hotel until a different flight was arranged. Egypt was great, Stephan and the Orca company were really good and soo much more professional than the ‘red sea’ diving company next door. Hani looked after me really well and met up with me most nights to show me the sights and keep me from being alone in the hotel. The reception and restaurant staff were lovely with me also. I have the bug for diving now, not so much from the 4 days as i found it a bit boring, but i went on two days on the boat with them, over to Ras Mohammed and the Starits of Tiran – it was totally unbelievable, the corals and the fish were amazing. The dive centre has a real family feel – it’s owned by husband and wife (Zecca and Marisa), and you can tell they invest a lot of time and effort in their clients. I was the only person booked in with them during my week (as it was just outside of the main dive season); whilst this initially appeared daunting they went out of their way to make it an exceptional week’s holiday for me. I could not recommend this holiday and dive centre highly enough – they went out of their way to really look after me, accommodate everything I wanted to do, cater for my level of diving experience etc; the diving was spectacular with great sea life, suitable for both beginners and advanced divers (and opportunities to regularly go down to 30m and beyond) and so long as you’re prepared to be flexible (eg weather), it is an amazing experience which I hope to repeat again soon. I had everything I needed. It was comfortable, perfect beach location, staff were friendly, food was amazing with an extensive choice. I never even left the resort for the first 4 days (except on dive boat). The customer service I received from Marcelina at Ultimate Diving was outstanding. We love Vilamendhoo which is why we’ve been there so many times. For me the quality and variety of diving is excellent, while for my wife who likes to snorkel but is quite nervous in the water, the house reef on Vilamendhoo couldn’t be easier. I’d recommend Vilamendhoo to anyone. They have some of the best dive sites in the Maldives on their doorstep and have the facilities and options available to take advantage of them. However, it’s not just a divers island. The service from the resort was flawless – the food is excellent and there are a lot of options other than diving – a great house reef (for diving or snorkelling), water sports, excursions, sports centre and a beach that goes all around the island. I booked a dive holiday with Ultimate Diving Scuba Diving Holidays who arranged a two-week trip from Birmingham to Port Ghalib Marsa Alam Egypt with Emperor Divers who are based at Marina Lodge Port Ghalib. I chose to dive with Emperor Divers since they had such a good reputation. I arrived at Port Ghalib late on the 10th of September and I arrived at the dive centre office on site on the afternoon of the 11th. I spoke with Anna who was expecting me, and we looked after the admin where she checked my PADI cards and logbooks and we then took my equipment to the dive store to setup my dive box. Anna explained that I would be on one of their three dive boats the Rachel the next morning at 8am. Sure, enough at 07:45 the next morning and the local dive guide Lisa was expecting me and checked how many dives I was wanting that day (2 or 3) and if I was taking lunch with me or eating on board? Lisa then took me onto the Rachel and showed me where my equipment was, and I then began measuring my Nitrox levels on my cylinder and then I completed the Nitrox log and assembled and tested my equipment while the crew always were offering their help. The dive brief was conducted once we reached the dive site and with quite a few new divers on board the briefing was thorough and comprehensive with attention to the buoyancy checks we would be needing to conduct prior to our first dive of the holiday. Lisa dive brief gave clear details of our dive group who our dive buddies were our pre dive buddy checks then the dive location the route and depths we would take and what creatures we could expect to see on the reef always there was the emphasis on safety with the 30minute or 100 bar turnaround on the dive the subsequent reduction in depth and then our final 3 minute stop all the time giving clear signals. After my first day on the Rachel I transferred over to the sister dive boat Amy I was then on the Amy for my subsequent 9 days of diving. I had different dive guides Paul, Taki and Moataz and young Mo all of these guides displayed great attention to detail and were all very professional I witnessed Moataz spending time with his guests ensuring that they were at all times comfortable and safe with their clearances and ensuring everyone enjoyed their dive which is a tall order with groups of 8 divers of mixed abilities ! All of diving time with Emperor on my 20 dives I felt comfortable and was impressed with the reef quality with lack of the bleaching which I had seen up at Sharm El Sheikh. The boat crew on Amy were always helpful smiling and very hard working I saw this every day with them all working together on the reefs driving zodiacs and ensuring that we were moored securely in prime jump off positions on the reef and then creating excellent lunches on board. After my two weeks with Emperor I can see why people return I have been impressed with the Emperor team and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone they even arrange a few divers nights over at the Wunderbar over the water with transport and tables arranged it was bliss since all of the people I met on the boat were very friendly and helpful with a special mention to Stephen and Kay and Simon and Tracy and I am looking forward to returning to Port Ghalib. The organisation including transfers was spot on. The hotel was great for overnight stay. Sangat resort was excellent, beautiful with a small group of customers. The diving was great with excellent guide. With the wreck depths of upto 40 metres we were on nitrox and I believe it is essential so worth identifying to future customers. Although not inexpensive, it was good value. Additionally traveling through Clark rather than Manila can only be heavily recommended. It was so much easier. Bonaire is a super dive destination – beautiful reefs, abundant fish life and pleasantly warm water. The boat diving at Captain Don’s is very well organised with helpful, knowledgeable dive guides. Nitrox is free and tanks are available 24/7 for unaccompanied diving. The meals at Rum Runners restaurant are excellent quality and variety. Snorkelling Trip Marsa Shagra Nov 2022 This is the second time we have travelled with Ultimate Diving and we hope to do so again. Communication is excellent, quick and helpful. Our 2 deluxe chalets were clean, spacious and comfortable with outside sitting areas with views of the sea and desert. The food was 3 buffet style meals daily, good and varied. A pizza oven, was a nice extra optional extra. Excellent desserts. House reef - both North & South, are in a protected area, no fishing has been allowed for the last 30 years. It was like snorkelling in an aquarium. Very popular with divers. Easy sandy entrance/exit. Well organised set up, both safety and environmentally aware. Staff were helpful & pleasant. The divers we chatted to were all repeat customers. 95% divers, very few English mainly German and Dutch. Would recommend going there. Read Review

From start to finish, the planning, organisation and location, at the Marsa Shagra diving centre in Egypt, far exceeded our expectations and has been an amazing experience. My partner had only recently qualified in June 2022 with 6 logged dives, so was a pure novice. During the week, she had the opportunity to master her diving skills and can't wait to return! The dive centre staff were always happy, smiling and ready to assist divers with their heavy equipment. A big thank you to Ahmed Amin, who helped us assemble our equipment, rinse our equipment after our dives and even went into the water to remove my partner's air tank at the end of her dives, which was very much appreciated. Woman caught flesh-eating bug while out in her garden

A woman who caught a flesh-eating bug while she was walking in her garden said she is ‘lucky to be alive’.

Louise Fawcett, 58, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, was pottering around in the garden on April 20 minding her own business when suddenly she felt a small cut on her right foot from rubble.

After several days she was diagnosed with necrotising fasciitis following days of swelling and agony and having originally been diagnosed with cellulitis.

Necrotising fasciltis is a rare life-threatening disease that can occur if a wound gets infected.

Louise’s memory faded following three days of surgery as doctors were forced to remove the bug from the infected tissue.

After weeks in hospital including six operations and a skin graft from her thigh she was allowed home but had to learn how to walk again and is on crutches.

Louise believes she caught the bug from soil in her garden which got into her blood stream through a tiny cut she got on her foot.

She said: ‘It was swollen quite a bit. I started to feel pretty unwell.

‘I’m unlucky to get it but lucky to be alive.

‘I can’t believe it happened somewhere so suburban as Chesterfield.’

Louise also recalled the moments spent in hospital where at one point she thought she would lose her leg.

‘They took me into a little room,’ she said.

‘The redness was creeping. It was changing before their eyes.

‘They thought I might lose my life or my leg.’

She now has a brace to support her ankle when she sits so it stays at 90 degrees.

She said: ‘I have to bathe my foot.

‘I can’t look at it. It doesn’t feel like my foot.

‘It feels like a mannequins foot.’

Louise had to postpone the launch of her business Sight Loss Solutions because of her ordeal.

She hopes to hold individual and group session and also support the carers of people who have experienced sight loss.
