Barge Cruise Reviews for Belmond Napoleon

"Cruising seems to me a lot like going to a great spa. You don't have to make any decisions at all and all your needs are taken care of! We loved the crew and the elegant dinners. Beth, your service was outstanding with your attention to detail. I'm so glad I found you." Sue and Alan C.

"The barge and crew were just fabulous in every aspect and the accommodations outstanding! It absolutely met our expectations and more. On the excursions, we learned so much and loved the opportunity to keep up our fitness and walk off some of the cheese. The best was the food, glorious food, and after this the Van Gogh and different experiences off the barge. Graham really loved the wine cellars. We least liked having to leave at the end of the week!" Robyn and Graham K.

The Newest Belmond Boat Will Have a Champagne Bar and Cruise to Vineyards in the French Countryside

The newest in the fleet of Les Bateaux Belmond is Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne, which will sail in May 2023 — in partnership with Maison Ruinart.

Belmond, the luxury travel company behind the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train , is adding yet another one-of-a-kind luxury offering to its portfolio. In May 2023, the company will launch a luxury barge that will take travelers on week-long private river cruises in France’s Champagne region .

Dubbed Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne , the vessel will accommodate six guests with three ensuite double cabins. Designed by French duo Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet (who are also working on the upcoming Mandarin Oriental, Vienna), there's a spacious indoor lounge and a Champagne bar that, before each trip, will be stocked with a curated selection of the travelers’ preferred bottles of bubbly. The new Belmond boat will join the fleet of six Les Bateaux Belmond cruising French rivers (all only available for private charter).

But the crown jewel of the boat is the main deck which features two elegant, alfresco lounges, an open kitchen, a shaded dining area, and potted plants such as local herbs and wildflowers.

Belmond will also partner with France's oldest Champagne house, Maison Ruinart , to offer guests a private tour of its vineyard in Taissy alongside a tasting of its legendary cuvées. Back on the boat, Maison Ruinart’s chef Valérie Radou will treat guests to a five-course meal.

The week-long itineraries along the beautiful River Marne can be completely customized to reflect guests’ interests and preferences — from art- and history-focused tours to visiting under-the-radar wineries in the area.

Rates to charter Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne start from €82,000 (approximately $79,500) and can accommodate up to six people. The rate includes all meals on board, beverages, all planned excursions with a private guide, and a transfer from Paris to the boat in Champagne. A Luxurious Barge Cruise Is the Best Way to See France

Travel the country's elaborate inland waterways aboard a floating house party.

Pivoine Boat

Commercial barge traffic along those rivers—and along canals built between the 13th and the 20th centuries to amplify trade—was instrumental to the development of France as we know it today. And yet this most signal feature of the most visited country on earth has long been underappreciated.

Barge cruising on repurposed flat-bottomed workhorses has humble roots; it was begun by British expats some 50 years ago as a hippie extravagance with wildly unregulated standards, but it’s arguably the most effective way to rediscover the country. And now it’s becoming not only chic, for its retro “authenticity” and slow, civilized pace, but unabashedly luxurious. Especially as done by Belmond.

Pivoine

I embarked this past June on one of the first sailings of the Pivoine, one of Belmond’s two new barges. The Pivoine has only four cabins (think floating house party); a masterfully attentive staff of six (a downright sinful ratio), including a full-time chef and a guide; and a bespoke itinerary of stops and excursions (trips are completely customized and can be three or six nights). Best of all, we’d be sailing on the river Marne, through Champagne.

Embarkation is an hour’s drive from Paris . The Marne, an eastern tributary of the Seine, looks as it did when Cézanne, Corot, and Pissarro painted it: a ribbon of silky green bordered on both banks by a thicket of trees beyond which you can glimpse fields, vineyards, and villages. A rainbow arches over the river. (“The rain is prettier in France,” a friend declares.) Swans swim by.

The Pivoine

“It’s like watching a fire at night,” another friend comments from her deck chair. “Nothing at all happens, but it’s mesmerizing.”

The onboard indolence is restorative. Chef Adam White offers exquisite three-course meals (and premeal kitchen demos on request). Tastings of local cheeses are a feature of every lunch and dinner, which are served family-style at either the indoor or outdoor dining table. “Every day we will go more pungent,” says Rachel Spence, one of the Pivoine’s two hostesses, as she explains the character and provenance of Camembert, Brie, Chaource, Roquefort, Valençay, Epoisses. Like petals on a peony ( pivoine in French), we feel France unfolding lusciously before us.

Bikes are strapped to the roof of the 250-ton Pivoine’s cabin; two of us jog along the old towpaths (barges used to be pulled by horses—and humans) to work off the grandes bouffes . We are ferried by van to sights far and near, including the magnificent château of Vaux-Le-Vicomte, a model for Versailles completed in 1661 by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s powerful and ambitious finance minister. (Fouquet’s motto, inscribed on the façade, reads, provocatively, “ Quo non ascendet? ”: Whither will he not ascend?) Long story short, it did not end well for Fouquet: The Sun King prudently imprisoned him for life.

Pivoine bedroom

We visit the American cemetery at Belleau Wood. More than 4,000 American soldiers died here in the summer of 1918 in the Second Battle of the Marne, stopping the German advance on Paris. It marked the first time an American army had fought in a European war, forged the reputation of an indomitable American military, and signaled the start of the American Century, now ending, during which the U.S. would become the reliable guarantor of security in Western Europe.

At the Abbey of Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers, we hear the story of the enterprising Benedectine monk Pierre Pérignon, who arrived in 1668 and set about perfecting the production of sparkling wine to make it fit not only for the king but for God. “Look, my brothers!” he exclaimed when he had nailed it (so the story goes). “I am drinking stars!”

Which is pretty much how we feel. The dinner table each night is a sea of glasses. We have private cellar tours and tastings (the Belmond cruise way). At the Pannier estate the charming Elina Lesniak gives us a master class in champagne making: the two fermentations, the prise de mousse , the disgorgement. Nicole Snozzi, from Laurent-Perrier, comes to us, bearing three choice bottles.

“This Prestige Cuvée,” she states, “needs good company. It does not accept horrible people.”

In the Moët & Chandon tasting room, on Avenue de Champagne in Epernay—ground zero—Andrea Marx sums up the elixir we are sipping: “It’s ultimately about emotion, isn’t it?”

As I sit on deck on our last evening, in the pearly dusk of the French countryside at Dizy, I ponder Andrea’s gnomic sentiment, and the words of the voluptuous French song “C’est Si Bon” (“It’s So Good”) come to mind.

A Viking Cruise through Lyon and Provence

W hen I arrived in Lyon, to begin my trip through Provence , I was ready to do some sightseeing on foot. My plans involved visiting historic sites, shopping for French products, and leisurely sipping wine at a vineyard or enjoying a meal at a café.

How I traveled through Provence was a way I didn’t think of at first—by taking a cruise. I did so with Viking, a Norwegian cruise company which offers river and ocean cruises throughout the world.

Viking Cruises

Our Viking “Lyon & Provence” cruise was an eight-day voyage along the Rhône River, departing from Lyon and ending in Avignon. In Lyon, I boarded the Viking Hermod , a four-deck cruise ship within the Viking Longships fleet.

What I liked most about my Viking cruise was that it focused on immersing us in all that this region of French is often noted for, especially with food and wine.

On board, Viking Hermod’s restaurant featured crêpes Suzette, Salade Lyonnaise and other traditional French dishes in daily menus.

Excursions highlighting history, culture, culinary and nature across our itinerary’s ports of call were all part of our schedule. In between dockings, we also had time to wander around on our own. These French destinations were included along our Viking itinerary.

Lyon is known for many histories. It is referred to France’s gastronomy capital, and Anthony Bourdain visited the city and dined for a “Parts Unknown” episode with a famous Lyon native, Chef Daniel Boulud.

The city is also known for silk production, dating to the 15 th century when Louis XI of France establishment its manufacturing. Silk scarves can still be purchased in Lyon from various shops.

It is also the birthplace of Antoine de Saint Exupéry, the author of “ The Little Prince .” It’s easy to spot reminders of this connection through stores selling the book or statues or cutouts of its boyish main character on view.

I took all of this in through a familiarization tour of Lyon, showing our group some of the city’s highlights. Our outing took us to the Basilica of Notre Dame , located atop the majestic Fourvière Hill. Along with heading inside this beautiful basilica, take in the incredible surrounding panoramic views from an adjacent outlook point.

Nearby this church is Vieux-Lyon, Lyon’s Old Town. This Renaissance era-district is full of narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets connecting to bakeries, restaurants, shops and other buildings.

It’s here that we come across Lyon specialties. Coussin de Lyon, a pale green-colored marzipan with a dark green middle strip and flavored with chocolate ganache and curacao liquor. Amid trying other baked treats, the Brioches aux Pralines Roses have bits of pink color amid a buttery, flaky and sweet texture.

Another food tour had us stopping at Café Bourbon , a bouchon noted for homestyle cooking and a good wine selection; Café Comptoir Abel , a Lyon institution where we tried pate en croute with lentils; and Louis Simart Chocolatier , with a fine assortment of ganaches, pralines and other chocolates.

The Beaujolais Region

On our next day, one of our excursions brought us to Beaujolais, a major wine production region in France that’s speckled with towns and villages. It’s got a strong viticultural legacy, too.

At our first stop in Beaujeu, we browsed in and out of patisseries and a local vendor shop at a visitor’s center called La Maison du terroir beaujolais .

Our next stop was for a tasting at Château de Nervers in Odenas, a family wine estate with a 18 th -century castle amid its vineyards. The property incorporates a tasting room of the estate’s robust wines.

Vienne

South of Lyon, this French town of Vienne has a strong Roman history, as our walking tour showed us why at the Roman Temple of Augustus and Livia.

Vienne’s Saint Maurice Cathedral is a medieval architectural gem. Another wonder is the Roman Theatre, a still-in-use outdoor amphitheatre dating between 40 and 50 AD. It is located at the base of Pipet Hill with amazing overhead views of Vienne.

On my way back to the port to board Viking Hermod, I came across Chocolaterie Mr. Coco . This charming confectionary sells chocolate bars and boxes full of ganaches in bright colors and wonderful flavorings.

Tournon-sur-Rhône, France

In southern France, Tournon-sur-Rhône is small river port village above the Rhône known for the Sequin Bridge. One experience that visitors can do here is take a ride on the Train des Gorges, a meter-gauge steam train. The roundtrip excursion goes through the Doux Valley, amid a countryside full of woodlands, valleys and streams and through a tunnel.

The trip departs from the Tournon St Jean station and ends at the Colombier-le-Vieux/Saint Barthélémy-le-Plain station. At this stop, passengers disembark where they can witness an amazing feat. This locomotive is manually turned around to head right back to its starting point. It’s definitely a moment to watch!

The Tournon St Jean station has attractions including a museum and gift shop and an outdoor concession stand where you can purchase products such as a chestnut spread.

This town has a rich Roman history and provided artistic inspiration for Vincent Van Gogh, who lived and painted here from 1888 through 1889 until suffering from a nervous breakdown. Despite his illness, Van Gogh produced noteworthy paintings during his time in Arles, which many scenes in his work.

We went on a side trip to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a village where Van Gogh was a patient at a hospital for mental health treatment. This destination was also where the French seer and astrologer Nostradamus is from; his home is also pointed out. If shopping for souvenirs, Lilamand is a confectionary known for their delectable jellied fruits and calissons.

Another excursion brought us to do an olive oil tasting at Moulin à Huile Saint Jean , a four-generation, family-owned mill in the French village of Fontvieille.

Our endpoint in Avignon was bittersweet. For part of the 14 th century, this riverside city was the seat of the Catholic popes, having nine of them in residence.

That history is told at the Palace of the Popes (Palais des Papes), one of the world’s largest and most significant Gothic palaces. Visitors can go on a tour inside this fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Our walking tour in Avignon also brought us to Les Halles d’Avignon , a beloved indoor food market. It’s a shopping delight as visitors can purchase fruits, vegetables, cheeses, wines and other locally sourced or produced staples.

My final Viking excursion involved a farewell sampling of French wine within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a village known for this type of production. Our tour of the family-owned winery, Bouachon Le Pavillon, took us along their vineyard and cellars and ended with a sampling of two reds and one white. I bought their Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, from the gift shop, along with a basil and strawberry-scented candle.

I would never consider that a Viking cruise was such a great way to see Provence and Lyon and their surrounding French regions. Or that I would see, eat and drink all of their splendors!
