P1009 code — how to fix error fast

Navigating the p1009 code is essential for optimal car health. gain insights to maintain your car's prime condition..

A person holding a diagnostic tool in a car.

Reading the code P1009 via a diagnostic scanner can be one of the worst error warnings you can read in your car since it’s closely related to the engine. Getting to the bottom of the P1009 code meaning can therefore be a challenge, but we decided to make it easier for you through this complete guide.

As we go through the code’s implications and possible causes, we’ll also give you a few hints on how you can properly diagnose the issue and fix it afterward.

Why you can trust REREV’s OBD2 code advice: Our automotive expert researchers with experienced mechanics undertakes a thorough research methodology to deliver precise insights on OBD codes. Find out more about OBD2 codes research process. .

What does the P1009 code mean?

The P1009 code is a manufacturer-specific code that indicates a malfunction in the variable valve timing control system. The variable valve timing control system adjusts the timing of the engine’s valves to optimize performance and fuel efficiency. When the engine control module (ECM) detects a malfunction in the variable valve timing control system, it triggers the P1009 code.

Of course, this issue can only occur in vehicles that use Toyota’s VVT-i or similar variable valve timing systems, so those cars are most prone to the issue. If you own one of these and the code appears, you’ll need to act swiftly to avoid having to deal with combustion issues, reduced engine performance, and problems with fuel economy.

What causes the P1009 code?

Symptoms that may be present with the P1009 code include reduced engine performance, rough idling, stalling, and increased fuel consumption. All of these may point to specific causes behind the code, so we decided to make things easier for you by going through all the possibilities:

Malfunctioning valve timing control solenoid

The solenoid is responsible for controlling the oil pressure that actuates the VVT system. If the solenoid fails, it can result in improper or inconsistent oil pressure, leading to VVT system malfunctions.

Restricted oil passages

Another common reason for this code is a blockage or restriction in the oil passages that supply oil to the VVT components. This can lead to insufficient oil pressure, causing the VVT system to malfunction.

Wiring issues in the variable valve timing system

Since modern cars use an electronically-operated variable valve timing, the issue’s cause may be as simple as damaged wiring. In this case, the fix won’t be that complex and it won’t be as expensive as replacing the solenoid or other affected components of the system.

Which car models does the P1009 code affect the most?

The P1009 code can appear in several different car models, but it is most commonly found in Honda vehicles. Still, we did some thorough digging and figured out that the following models have the highest chance of being exposed to issues leading to the code’s activation:

  • Acura TSX : The 2004-2008 TSX models with the 2.4-liter engine have been reported to have issues with the VVT system, including faulty solenoids and oil passages.
  • Honda Civic : One car model that is known to be prone to P1009 is the Honda Civic. Specifically, the 2006-2011 Civic models with the 1.8-liter engine have been reported to experience this issue frequently. The problem is often caused by a malfunctioning VVT oil control valve or solenoid.
  • Honda CR-V : Due to the issues with the variable valve timing system, this model is also known to have frequently experienced issues with the code P1009.

How to diagnose the P1009 code

Diagnosing the P1009 code requires specialized diagnostic tools and equipment. Even so, the following steps can help diagnose the issue even without much need for specialized equipment:

Use an OBD2 scanner

The first step in diagnosing any OBD2 code is to use an automotive scanner to read the trouble codes stored in the vehicle’s computer system. The scanner can provide information about which system or component is causing the problem, including P1009.

Inspect the VVT-i system components

Once you have identified that P1009 is the issue, you can begin inspecting the VVT components for any visible damage or wear. Look for loose connections, broken wires, or damaged solenoids. You may need to remove some engine covers or other components to access the VVT system.

Check the oil pressure sensor

The next step is to check the oil pressure and flow within the VVT system. This can be done using specialized tools such as an oil pressure gauge or an electronic diagnostic tool. Low oil pressure or restricted flow can indicate a blockage in the oil passages or a malfunctioning valve timing control solenoid.

Check the electrical system

If there are no visible issues with the VVT components and the oil pressure is normal, you may need to test the electrical circuits that control the VVT system. Using a multimeter, you can check for continuity, resistance, and voltage at various points in the circuit.

How to fix the P1009 code

The cost of fixing the P1009 code will depend on the underlying cause and whether the repair can be done at home or requires professional assistance. Still, now that you know a bit more about the background of the issue, you can use that to your advantage to solve the underlying problem with one of these methods:

Replace the faulty VVT solenoid

If the solenoid is found to be faulty during diagnosis, it will need to be replaced with a new one. This is typically a straightforward process, and the new solenoid should restore proper VVT operation.

Clean oil passages

If the problem is caused by blockages or restrictions in the oil passages that supply oil to the VVT components, these passages will need to be cleaned or replaced. This is typically a more involved process that may require removing various engine components to access the oil passages.

Repair or replace damaged wiring

If there are any issues with the electrical circuits that control the VVT system, such as loose connections or broken wires, these will need to be repaired or replaced as needed.

Perform a software update

In some cases, P1009 may be caused by outdated software in the PCM. In these cases, performing a software update using specialized tools can fix the issue.

How to prevent the P1009 code

Routine maintenance can help prevent the P1009 code from appearing. Based on our team’s expertise and research, these are the main servicing methods you can use to prevent this code from occurring:

  • Perform regular oil changes
  • Inspect the oil passages and pressure sensor
  • Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule

Overall, any car that uses a variable valve timing system should be inspected for damage to the crucial VVT system components over time.

In the end, the code P1009 may or may not be a big cause of concern for drivers that own cars with variable valve timing systems. It also depends on how the system is positioned, so different manufacturers may use different types of VVT systems overall, and the possible reasons for the code vary accordingly.

So, we think that you will be able to use at least a portion of our pieces of advice listed in this guide to fix the code and deal with the situation.

Can I still drive my car with P1009?

Depending on the severity of the issue, you may be able to drive your car with P1009 temporarily. However, it’s recommended to avoid driving for long distances or at high speeds until the issue is fixed.

Can I fix P1009 myself?

Depending on your level of expertise and access to specialized tools, you may be able to fix P1009 yourself. However, it’s recommended to seek the assistance of a qualified mechanic if you are unsure of how to proceed with repairs.

How much will it cost to fix P1009?

The cost of fixing P1009 can vary widely depending on the root cause of the problem and the specific parts and labor required for repairs. It’s recommended to get a quote from a qualified mechanic before proceeding with repairs.

Humidity Sensor Diagnostic Code P1009

arvindram11 said: Ugh. Hope not. But I wouldn't be surprised at this point. Did you notice anything leaking under the car when it was parked when this happened? Our van is normally in the garage and I haven't noticed anything odd on the floor. Click to expand...

No, the AC refrigerant is a gas so you won't see a leak.

arvindram11

To update the thread - ended up being a bad compressor - cost about $1200 after all said and done.

Well, the AC problems came back after about 3 Months of working properly. It now is sporadic like how it was when the issue started. I have an appointment to have it checked out but am already going to guess that they are not going to find anything wrong as (like I said) the issue is sporadic.

I dropped it off yesterday at the dealership and they said it was low on Freon and charged it up fully. This time it cost me over $600. I picked up the van this morning and it worked fine for about 8 hours (drove about 20 miles with the AC working ok - dealership to work and then work to home). Now in the evening driving back home it started to blow hot again. The dealership has asked me to drop the vehicle again with them tomorrow and I have already paid multiple days of rental (at my cost). This is now getting to be very frustrating.

Just to update the thread - the dealership/service advisor refunded the charge for the Freon and the labor. They did not find any leaks and thought it was a software hitch and reset something and it appeared to work for about 4 or 5 days before starting to blow hot again. The vehicle is back at the dealership (who have given me a rental for the time being). They diagnosed it as something in the compressor assembly (a safety switch?) that keeps tripping and causes the compressor clutch to not engage. They have ordered a new compressor but it won’t get here until later this week. This will be the second compressor in under 4 months. Luckily for me the second one should be under the warranty.

What does the humidity senor do?

2017 dodge journey p1009 00

I'm assuming you have a 2011+...: A humidity sensor (1) is used on Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) models to detect humidity levels inside the vehicle to optimize the dehumidifying effect of the A/C system. The humidity sensor is attached to a plastic bracket (3) by a metal retaining clip (2). The sensor bracket is attached to the inside of the windshield by an adhesive. A cover is attached to the sensor bracket by four plastic tabs (4). The humidity sensor is connected to the Body Control Module (BCM) by a dedicated three wire lead and connector that protrudes out from under the front of the headliner. CAUTION: Use care when servicing the humidity sensor. The humidity sensor bracket cannot be serviced separately from the windshield. If the sensor bracket becomes damaged, the windshield will need to be replaced. The humidity sensor can be serviced without the use of any special tools. The humidity sensor detects humidity, dew point and windshield glass temperature, and sends this information to the Body Control Module (BCM) over a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) data bus connection. The BCM then broadcasts the message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus to the A/C heater module. The A/C heater module automatically adjusts A/C clutch operation, amount of recirculated air, blower motor speeds and outlet modes to prevent fogging on the inside of the windshield glass. If the humidity sensor message is not received by the A/C heater module, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set. The information the A/C heater module receives from the humidity sensor can be viewed using a scan tool.

how to remove humididty sensor ?? i wan areplace it as my air re circulation button blinks 3 tims and never turns on.. i think it mightbe the issue

2017 dodge journey p1009 00

In cold weather, use of Recirculation mode may lead to excessive window fogging. On systems with Manual Climate Controls, the Recirculation mode is not allowed in Defrost mode to improve window clearing operation. Recirculation will be disabled automatically if this mode is selected. Attempting to use Recirculation while in this mode will cause the LED in the control button to blink and then turn off. .

the light always blinks, it never turns on never EVER.. i wanna replace the humidity sensor and see.. cananyone post a pic

I have the exact same issue. No matter the air flow mode (vents, floor, etc.), recirc won't come on most of the time. Also have an issue with the temperature - when the temp drops below about 60F outside, it's ALWAYS hot. And I mean HOT! Eventually, after I play a bunch w/ the max a/c, a/c, auto, recirc and other settings it will respond to temp inputs and change back to cooler air. It's gotta be software related and everything I can find in a variety of forums points back to the humidity sensor as the culprit. Found it for about $55 (delivered) online. Part # 55111389AF is the newest version (replaces the 55111389AD that was OEM on my '13). I'd bet since there have been at least C, D, E and F versions (and probably A and B before '13 at some point), this is a problem part. The stealerships just aren't educated about how this sensor interacts with the HVAC so that they know to troubleshoot it. I'm going to take the risk and order a new one and try to replace. Hopefully it fixes the issue...

What did you find out? Did replacing the humidity sensor solve your problem?

2017 dodge journey p1009 00

No special tools, pop the cover off but be careful if the clips break you cannot use he cover again. Like what happened to me but doesn't affect anything. Just doesn't have a cover. I think its like $50ish for the sensor. When ya pop off the cap, take your finger nail and push in of the little indent and slide off wire. Next carefully pry the metal clips w needle nose pliers. I dk why dodge doesn't resale the whole housing. Its little double sided taped to the windshield anyway. I only need the whole housing BC like I said. I broke then little clips that hold the cover on.

13daytona1625.... where did you get the mounting bracket?

Mthomas1996 said: 13daytona1365.... where did you get the mounting bracket? Click to expand...

Looking through the thread I thought I had read that you replaced the entire mounting because you broke the tabs for the cover. However if I misread that my apologies. If you did get the mounting bracket that attaches to the windshield where did you get it I can't seem to find it anywhere online.

hello, i am actually having the same issue on my 2012 dodge charger, what is the part number you guys used if its between 2012-2016

2017 dodge journey p1009 00

I loath and despise "Use the search police", it just adds to the clutter they are trying to prevent. If I land on a forum that has someone doing this often I avoid it. If I cannot help someone I just scroll by, he will figure it out. But having doing the humidity sensor replacement myself and the write up I searched "Humidity Sensor" choosing "Titiles Only" and found it. HERE

Dodge Journey P0019: Crank/Cam Position Correlation – Bank 2 Sensor “B”

P0019 is a generic OBD II trouble code.  It is typically thrown when the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the Camshaft Position Sensor are out of alignment by a certain number of degrees,  if there is an issue with the wiring, or one of the sensors themselves may have gone bad. We’ll explore all the symptoms and causes directly below.

P0019 refers to which camshaft position sensor is out of time with the Crankshaft. In this case it’s sensor “B”. Sensor “A” throws P0017 .

P0019 Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey P0019 Symptoms

P0019 should be considered an important trouble code to diagnose and repair. The crank and cam sensors work in tandem to produce the ideal air/fuel ratio for your engine. When this timing is off, the engine will typically not run (or barely run).

Here are the major symptoms of P0019 in the Journey:

  • Failure to start
  • Rattle coming from the motor
  • Service engine soon light
  • Engine poorly running

P0019 Causes and Solutions: Dodge Journey

Here are the most common causes of P0019 in the Dodge Journey, and resources to help you diagnose the problem. It’ll either be a wiring issue, or it’ll be a physical problem (bad reluctor or timing chain jumped).

Dodge Journey P0019 Diagnosis

1. Wiring Issues

One of the most common causes of P0019 in any vehicle is going to be wiring issues. You’ll want to inspect the wiring harness for visible damage. A lot of the harness leading to and from the Crank/Cam sensors is going to be exposed to hot exhaust and vibration. This is a great place to start diagnosing P0019 in your Journey. It’s quick and easy to do this before moving on to the sensors themselves.

Make sure to check the harness where it plugs into both sensors as well.

How to Diagnose Vehicle Wiring Problems (AA1 Car)

2. Bad Sensors

After examining the wiring harness, it would be time to check the sensors themselves. Using a simple voltage tester, you’ll be able to determine whether or not they are functioning correctly. We linked to a great video showing you how to do so directly below.

How to test a crankshaft or camshaft sensor (YouTube)

Crankshaft Position Sensor (Amazon Low Price)

Camshaft Position Sensor (Amazon)

The timing chain or belt will throw cause P0019 to throw. This will happen when it has stretched or jumped a tooth or two. If it jumps more than a few teeth, the odds are that the engine itself will not run at all.

If you’ve recently changed the timing chain, it may very well have not been aligned properly on install. Many manufacturers (particularly Japanese Automakers) have very strict timing chain service intervals. If it’s been too long, it may jump a few teeth. Even the slightest misalignment can cause P0019.

Timing Chain Jumped Symptoms and Diagnosis

4. Crank or Cam Tone/Reluctor Ring

The Crankshaft Sensor is going to use a tone or reluctor ring to determine the position of the Crank. This ring uses notches that are scanned by the Crank Sensor in order to get an accurate position.

If this ring fails, the Journey will not be able to get an exact crank position. The camshaft typically will have a ring that provides the same function.

Often when a reluctor ring goes bad, it’ll rattle quite a lot. That is a very good indication that there is an issue with it.

Here’s a good video on diagnosing P0019:

Good luck diagnosing P0019 in the Dodge Journey. If there is anything you would like to add that could help; the next person reading this article, please leave a comment below.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
