Most common questions

Tell me a bit about the chateau.

Known for its stunning vistas, incredible outdoor lifestyle and welcoming mountain community, Whistler offers endless adventure no matter what season you visit.

Voted #1 Resort in Canada by Conde Nast Traveller, Reader’s Choice Awards in 2021, Fairmont Chateau Whistler offers an incredible opportunity to gain valuable and credible work experience while enjoying all the exciting benefits that life in Whistler offers.

What are the benefits of working here?

We want to help you have the best season possible while working with us, so we do our best to provide employee benefits that go above and beyond the standard. This includes, subsidized ski-in, ski-out staff accommodation directly on Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, a leisure benefit bonus of up to $1,000 per employee per season (to go towards a ski or golf pass), a complimentary meal per working day in our staff cafeteria, discounted travel at Fairmont and Accor properties in Canada and around the globe and so much more.

What job will I most likely be offered?

9 out of 10 positions at this hotel are back of house, namely housekeeping or cleaning. If you're not willing to consider these roles, don't apply for a hotel position. Without hotel experience, you'll likely be offered a back of house job. If you're not willing to do a housekeeping role, the employer probably won't want you. The competition for front of house roles is very high, so selecting a back of house role increases your chances of being hired. Work hard and you'll be promoted.

What type of person would suit a hotel role?

  • Hard working
  • Physically fit
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Able to take direction from both males and females
  • Flexible with working hours as some roles may start early and or late in the day
  • Happy to give any role a crack with a positive attitude
  • Those looking for career moves in the hotel industry
  • Recognise that working back of house gives applicants a better perspective for when they get promoted to front of house roles. They understand how the back of house operations affects the front of house and vice -versa. Way more effective leaders and managers because of their back of house experience.

What staff accommodation is available?

Quad occupancy apartments.

We offer two-bedroom, ski-in ski-out units which are dorm-style, with an open concept kitchen and living room area. They may accommodate up to four people and include a private bathroom with tub/shower as well as a fully self-contained galley style kitchen with a fridge, stovetop, microwave, toaster oven, sink and cupboard space. The size of this unit is approximately 420sq. ft.

Paying rent

$12.75-$18.25/day per person based on unit occupancy

What are the colleague facilities?

  • Common Area
  • Fitness Room (open 24hrs)
  • Laundry Facilities (open 24hrs)

About our housing locations

Location comes with shared staff housing which is offsite and roughly a 4min drive or a 20min walk. This is generally located in Glacier Lodge which is one of the same locations for staff housing as Whistler Blackcomb (Vail). Most rooms are 2 people per room with 4 people sharing a 2 bedroom unit. Housing is allocated by The Fairmont, however you can put in any requests of who you want to share with once you have a job contract.

Situation and Hotel size

The Fairmont Chateau is located at the bottom of Blackcomb mountain within the town of Whistler. They are not owned by Vail (the company that owns Whistler Blackcomb) so this is a different employer altogether, in the same ski town. This property boasts 519 rooms.

LOTS of nightlife with bars, clubs and extracurricular options

Aussie saturation

Saturation of Aussies is HIGH

Temperature

Given the location of this resort to the west coast, this is the warmest resort from all resorts, typically only suffering really cold temps (anything below -20 which usually lasts for a couple weeks)

Predominantly housekeeping and back of house roles. There are limited front facing roles in the front of house for experienced hotel front desk applicants and a range of front and back of house food and beverage roles. The range and number of roles changes from season to season based on the number of returning staff.

Career progression

This employer is world renown so it will look great on your resume. For those looking to climb the management ladder, you will need to stick around for back to back seasons. Keep in mind Fairmont Chateau Whistler is part of the Accor group who operate various hotels around the world. Should your performance be outstanding you could transfer to an employer in your home country. Those wanting to start a career in hotels…our recommendation is start in Housekeeping. Why? Simply because when you get to be a front desk or hotel manager you will have complete appreciation and understanding of how the back of house operates. The Fairmont also has locations in Lake Louise, Banff & Jasper you can transfer to from season to season.

This employer offers a ‘Wellness Package’ worth $1,000. This can be used for your ski or bike pass.

Whistler is an easy 2 hours drive up the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver. Vancouver has a large international airport and is only an hour drive to the USA land border with Washington state.

Ongoing employment

The TWHC will assist with your first season's contract. The ball is in your court – we help you get the job, you need to work hard to keep it. Ongoing extension of contracts are based on seasonal performance and at the determination of management, as is Housing. Fairmont Chateau Whistler operates year round and contracts will be extended based on performance.

Why go here?

Whistler is the biggest and most well known ski town in North America! It’s usually where your mates have been or will recommend you to go. Great night club and party action. With popularity, comes more crowds which can mean more lines for lifts etc. This resort will do over 35,000 skier visits in one day over the Christmas period so it gets VERY busy. There are 2 massive ski mountains in one place so the in-bounds skiing and riding is phenomenal and plentiful. So is backcountry skiing. In the summer, if you're a keen mountain biker, alpine hiker or love to climb… yep... this is your place!

Any reasons to avoid?

It is absolutely packed to the eyeballs and super busy. Lots of staff do find Whistler expensive. When you have more to do in terms of nightlife, bars, drinking and social activities you will generally find you may be spending more of your savings. Whistler has the biggest housing crisis out of any place in Canada. If you are not going through our program to secure a bed or having a bed pre arranged, your chances of finding housing at the resort are next to none. They also don’t have any temporary accommodation so you would be paying top dollar to start in a hotel if you don’t have housing.

The snow here can be wet given its proximity to the coast. If you're a powder hound – yes, there are killer days ...but that's it, days! Other resorts that have powder skiing/riding on tap

Ultimate guide to living and working in Whistler, Canada

Whether on a gap year or career break, living and working in Whistler, Canada is a unique experience and great way to spend a winter. As Oyster’s resident Destination Manager for Canada and Whistler expert, I’ve shared my insight and knowledge to come up with our ultimate guide to living and working in Whistler.

Hopefully this guide will answer some of those important questions that go through your head when you are considering spending a season overseas in Canada.

work and travel jobs whistler

What’s Whistler like in the winter?

Whistler is regularly voted as North America’s number 1 ski resort and it is easy to see why. You’ve got a fantastic mix of awesome snow, varied terrain and a friendly local community to start with.

Whistler hosted the 2010 Winter Olympic Games along with Vancouver. It’s got the highest vertical drop in North America, over 8000 ski-able acres of terrain, and enjoys more than 11 meters of snow fall each season. The resort offers over 200 runs accessed by 37 lifts.

Where do I start?

Whilst it is possible to rock up in Whistler as a newbie and sort yourself out with a job and somewhere to live, it’s a risky strategy. The job fairs take place in October in Whistler and, with a bit of work experience under your belt, you may be lucky enough to secure a job.

The difficulty comes in securing accommodation in Whistler for the season. This is at a real premium and can be quite expensive for what you get. If going this route, it is likely that you would need to head to Whistler in late September, secure yourself a job and start paying your rent. Bear in mind that your job will most likely not start until late November when the tourists start to arrive, so you will have to fund the first couple of months for yourself.

Companies like Oyster can take a lot of the stress out of the situation by helping to make sure that you have a job and accommodation organised before you arrive in Canada. The other benefit of going with Oyster is that you will head to Whistler with a ready-made group of friends, who will all be living with you in staff housing. This is a far more social way of starting your new life in Canada and you will also have the support of Tory, our representative who lives and works in Whistler – someone you can turn to if you have any issues.

Work permits for Canada

Unless you are lucky enough to hold a Canadian passport (or be eligible to apply for one), you will require a work permit to allow you to spend a season living and working in Canada.

Most employers in Whistler will require to arrive with the ‘open’ Working Holiday Program permit. With this permit you don’t need to have a job offer to apply for it. Offering ‘sponsored’ permits with a job offer letter is a timely and costly exercise for employers. Basically, they must prove that the job they want you to do cannot be done by a Canadian.

With the Working Holiday Program, anyone who is eligible can come to Canada and work in any job for up to two years. From the employer’s point of view, this is a great system!

Canadian Immigration offer the Working Holiday Program to citizens of approximately 30 countries. If your country is not listed, then I’m sorry to say that you would not be eligible. Each country then has a quota allocated each year (the UK, for example, is usually given a quota of around 5000). The quotas tend to open towards the end of each year and applicants can express their interest by entering the ‘pool of candidates’. Once in the pool, you will need to be patient and wait to be selected and invited to apply for the work permit itself.

The key thing with all of this is that applying for the work permit takes time, so you really need to be thinking ahead when it comes to moving to Canada, ideally start organising everything a year before you want to go!

We’ve produced a guide on how to apply for the Working Holiday Program. Sign up to receive your free work permit guide today.

Where should I live in Whistler?

Whistler is not a huge place and finding accommodation at the right price can be hard. The resort is broken down into three key areas – Whistler, Blackcomb and Creekside.

If you book onto our programmes working for the Mountain or in a hotel, we ensure that accommodation within staff housing is organised for you before you arrive. Staff housing is always heavily subsidised by your employer, so you can be sure of living in a great location and that it is excellent value for money. Generally, accommodation costs the equivalent of an hours’ pay per night.

Even if you apply directly to an employer with staff housing available, there are not many beds so, again, you need to be organised and act fast.

The largest employer in Whistler is Whistler Blackcomb itself (known as ‘The Mountain’). They house the most staff in Whistler in ‘HOUSE’. There are several locations throughout the resort but the most popular is Glacier Park, located on the side on Blackcomb Mountain. There are 7 buildings that house 1000 people and it reminds me a lot of University accommodation from the outside. Each building is made up of a number of units. Most of these are shared between four people. Each unit has two bedrooms with a bunk bed, a lounge, bathroom and kitchen. The cost of the accommodation is taken directly from your pay cheque and works out to be roughly the equivalent of an hours’ pay per night.

If you don’t have the option of getting a place in staff housing, you may still be able to find a house share available in a private rental. Given that there is not a great deal of choice, and high demand, expect to be dealing with landlords that could be charging you quite a lot of money for a bed! You should also expect to arrive in Whistler in the autumn to secure your accommodation in late September/early October.

Whistler has several neighbourhoods that surround the immediate ‘village’. It is in these neighbourhoods, such as Brio in Whistler Centre, where the private rental accommodation is located.

If you choose to go down this independent route, remember that your seasonal job may not start until late November, so you will be paying out for your accommodation for a couple of months before you start to earn money.

work and travel jobs whistler

Work hard and play hard

We’ve all heard this phrase growing up. No truer have I seen it than in Whistler Blackcomb though. To work in Whistler, and be successful, you really need to arrive with this ‘can do’ attitude. It’s an attitude that means you’ll go above and beyond for your customers, always with a smile on your face. The days are long and can be tough, particularly if you are working on the mountain and outside all day in the winter weather.

If you can work hard and impress your bosses, they are going to want you to make the most of your season in Whistler. This means taking advantage of the awesome ski and ride opportunities and having an awesome social life on your days off.

Whistler is an excellent party town with a great vibe for seasonal workers. Everyone is super-friendly and there are loads of places to go to on a night out.

What’s the food like?

Whistler is a foodie’s paradise. You can find pretty much every type of cuisine in the village as it has to cater to the tastes of the international tourists arriving from all around the world.

Seafood in Whistler is excellent, due to the close proximity to the ocean and sushi is always a popular choice among the locals.

Being in North America, portions sizes are generally large – just what you need after a day on the mountain!

Lunch at Tim Hortons

As a worker in Whistler, eating out every day would become very expensive very quickly. Whistler has three supermarkets where you can buy all the essentials and then cook in the comfort of your own home.

That said, there are cheaper places for staff to go to eat out. Whistler has all of the main chain eateries such as McDonalds, Subway, Dominos and Tim Hortons (a personal favourite and Canadian staple!).

Employees of Whistler Blackcomb can also get access to a staff meals program at Base II (located close to staff housing on Blackcomb Mountain). For around $7 staff can get a 3 course meal each day – this is almost cheaper than cooking at home for yourself, and far easier!

How much money should I bring?

Whistler is a popular tourist resort and as such can be an expensive place to live if you are not careful. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take long to work out where the best hangouts are for staff who are on a tighter budget than the holiday-makers!

With any job in Whistler (even if you arrive with one pre-arranged), remember that it a month of working before your first pay cheque arrives, so you need to be able to support yourself during this time (accommodation and food costs for example). Most employers run pay roll every two weeks and if you start week midway through the payment cycle, you will have to wait until the next one. Your first pay cheques may be a little smaller than most as these might have had uniform or accommodation deposits taken for example.

What’s the weather like in Whistler?

Whistler is ideal as both a summer and winter destination. The summers are warm enough to swim in mountain lakes and moderate winter temperatures make for awesome powder days. Whistler is close to the Pacific Ocean so doesn’t tend to get as cold as other parts of Canada, such as The Rockies, during the winter. Expect temperatures around the 5 -10oC below zero mark for much of the winter, although when you add in the wind chill factor, it can feel much colder!

Whistler Blackcomb enjoys a long winter season. The slopes open towards the end of November and close at the end of April. Much of Blackcomb is on a glacier so offers spring and summer skiing right through to July.

What’s the terrain like at Whistler Blackcomb?

One word to sum it up? Awesome! Whistler Blackcomb comprises the biggest area for skiing and riding in North America. Lake Louise is the second largest area, but this is still half the size of Whistler Blackcomb in terms of skiing terrain.

Whistler and Blackcomb are two separate mountains, joined together in 2008 by the ‘Peak to Peak’ gondola (a system that still holds a host of world records).

Each mountain has its own challenges, and both are awesome. Having so much terrain available means you can always be skiing in the best conditions that the resort has to offer (maybe starting out on sunny Whistler in the morning before heading over to Blackcomb after lunch – always a popular choice!).

Both mountains have terrain suitable for beginners right up to experts alike. Whistler Mountain tends to have a little more variety for the beginners. Both have plenty of bowls, glades, steeps and chutes to keep you coming back wanting more.

Ski pass options

If you manage to secure a full-time job with ‘the mountain’ (i.e. Whistler Blackcomb) you will receive a season long ski pass as part of your job. This is a real bonus and will save you around $1700 over the course of the season.

A lot of the other big employers in Whistler (thinking hotels) tend to offer a discounted ski pass to staff with the cost being paid via payroll deductions off each pay cheque. This is a really good idea as it means that you get the full season pass on day one of employment but can pay it off over the course of the season. The one downside with this is that the money that ends up in your bank account from your pay cheque is going to be less after this deduction.

How do I get to Whistler?

Whistler is easy to get to from Vancouver International Airport (airport code YVR). Vancouver airport is about two hours from Whistler and journey goes along the iconic Highway 99 – the Sea to Sky Highway. There several transfer options that offer a direct shuttle service, including Pacific Coaches and Ridebooker , and most allow 3 hours for the transfer. Transfers cost around $60 each way. If you are already in Vancouver city, more options are available to you. Greyhound, for example have routes picking up in Vancouver on the way to Whistler.

When you arrive in the village, most buses will use the ‘village loop’ as their main drop off point. If you already have accommodation booked, you can request to be dropped off there although this request is normally made when you are booking the seat.

If you are feeling flash, there are several taxi and limo companies available to hire at the airport.

Personally, I wouldn’t suggest renting a car unless you absolutely must. The road up to Whistler can be quote treacherous during the winter and often hire cars are not equipped with winter tyres and snow chains. Save the hassle and let someone else do the driving!

If you are on an Oyster paid work programme in Whistler, we will organise the transfer from the airport for you and your group. This is included in the programme price, so long as you arrive at the same time as everyone else.

I hope that you have found this guide to living and working in Whistler useful. We have been arranging paid work for people in Whistler since 2000 and have a wealth of experience that we share with our participants. Hello, I really enjoyed reading and you already helped out a lot with it, but I’ve still got one big question. I am from Germany and at the moment my imagination is, when I graduated from high school next summer (I’m 18 years old then), to work and live in whistler for a whole year. Have you got any experiences with that or isn’t it a big difference than just spending winter season? I’d appreciate an answer and some tips how I could do it.

Thanks for your comments, I’m really pleased you enjoyed reading this guide.

In answer to your question, the Canada Work Permit for German citizens allows you to live and work in Canada for up to one year. Whilst our programme is for the winter season (approx 6 months in Whistler), quite a few of our participants extend their stay through the summer each year and pick up another job. Already having the winter season working for a top employer on your CV makes getting summer work much easier.

You would finish the Oyster programme at the end of the winter season but, by then, you should feel fairly independent and understand how the Canadian system works so that you can get that second job yourself.

My advice would be to join one of our Whistler paid-work programmes for November 2020 and then you’ll be able to stay on after. We are already accepting bookings for 2020 so it would be great to hear from you again soon.

Hi, I see you refer to finding accommodation through oyster and wondered how I could do this? Thanks

Thanks for your query. All of our jobs come with accommodation for the season so takes out the stress of finding a job and housing! We would be happy to talk this through with you for the next season 2024/25 if you contact us on +44 (0)1892 771976 or email me your questions directly at [email protected] .

Matador Original Series

The westin whistler: a no-brainer for bikes, dogs, and people.

W histler Resort, in British Columbia, has one of the biggest base villages of any mountain resort in North America. And because it’s popular year-round, with skiing in the winter and lift-serviced mountain biking and hiking in the summer, the hotels stay pretty pricey year-round. If you want a four- or five-star hotel in the village on a random midweek night in August, you should expect to pay $413 at the Four Seasons Whistler, just over $400 at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, or more than $600 for the above-and-beyond Fairmont Gold Experience.

Those are beautiful hotels, but there’s no denying they’re pricey — which is what makes the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler (also in the Whistler Village) such an appealing prospect.

On the same random midweek date (August 13), a basic room at the Westin Whistler is $306, including taxes. And there’s nothing “basic” about it, since every room has a fireplace and full kitchen. That means you can prep meals and snacks in your room — and have plenty of space to socialize without having to sit on your bed.

I recently stayed at the Westin Whistler with my dog and mountain bikes in tow to catch the season opening of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park . It was one of the most dog-friendly hotels I’ve ever stayed in, and the useful bike valet service saved me from the hassle of wheeling my dirty mountain bike into the pristine rooms.

Here’s what to know if you’re thinking about a Whistler trip this summer, and why it seemed like the Westin Whistler hits the sweet spot between price, convenience, and luxury.

It’s super dog-friendly

westin whistler review - dog spying

Photo: Suzie Dundas

The Westin Whistler isn’t just a dog-friendly hotel — it’s wildly dog friendly. There’s no charge to bring a dog, and you can have up to two in a room with no limits on size. When we checked in, my dog was greeted with a generously sized dog bone, and the hotel’s location on the edge of the village means there are lots of green spaces and paths to take dogs outside without walking through the crowded village. And if my dog’s behavior is to believed, there are also plenty of interesting things to spy on through the windows.

Rooms: all suites, all the time

Westin Whistler review - dog friendly

The rooms are slightly cheaper than comparable high-end resorts in the village, but it seems like you get a lot more bang for your buck. All rooms at the Westin Whistler are suites, with full kitchens (including fridges and stovetops) and fireplace. Many of the rooms, including my queen suite I stayed in, have private balconies or patios.

Obviously, having a kitchen in your room makes it easy to save money by cooking in your room, prepping snacks for a day of hiking or biking, or actually eating the leftovers you brought home from dinner the night before. But the nature of having a kitchen means the suites are bigger than most other hotel rooms, even in the cheapest rooms. Both my husband and I work remotely, and our room had plenty of space for us each to set up and work without feeling like we were too close.

The rooms also had other thoughtful details, like a calming lavender balm to use before bed, a big soaking bathtub, and super-fast Wi-Fi. We didn’t hear any noise from other guests, cars, or the lively bars in the village.

Westin Whistler review - doolie with pillows

Westin Heavenly beds: dog approved. Photo: Suzie Dundas

As a brand, Westin always touts its “Heavenly” bed, available to buy for at-home use and supposedly influenced by years of sleep research and studies. If you believe the hype, it’s supposed to be more comfortable, better at regulating temperature, and less likely to transfer movement to your partner.

And honestly: it mostly lived up to the hype! I did big mountain bike rides every day I was there, and during bike season, I usually wake up with back pain and stiffness. But I felt pretty good when I woke up each morning. While I can’t say that’s all because of one bed, it was nice to wake up feeling refreshed, which isn’t something that always happens while sleeping in new places. The bed also did a good job of absorbing movement, as my 45-pound dog managed to jump up and snuggle next to me every morning without waking me up.

It’s loaded with bike- and ski-friendly perks

westin whistler review - bike valet

Let the valet deal with your muddy, dirty, or wet bike (or skis). Photo: Suzie Dundas

Whistler’s summer bike park is one of the best in the world, and Whistler-Blackcomb is literally the biggest ski resort in North America. So obviously, all hotels in the area cater to skiers and bikers. But I found this one especially bike-friendly for a few reasons.

For starters, it has a bike valet. Think of it as a car valet, but for mountain bikes. When you arrive or get back from a ride, you give your bike to a valet, who takes it to a secure storage area. There’s no need to carry your bike through the hotel or have a dirty bike in your room, and when you’re ready to head out the next morning, just give your bike tag to the valet. The bikes are stored very close to reception, so retrieving your bike is super quick. Each bike is only $6 to valet — a pretty reasonably fee compared to most services in Whistler.

The location is also ideal for mountain bike trips. The Westin Whistler is about a two-minute walk (or 30-second pedal) to the Fitzsimmons Lift, the bike park’s primary uphill bike lift. That makes it easy to maximize your riding time, take breaks, or run back up to the room if it turns out you do need that rain jacket you left in the closet. And because the Westin has on-site covered parking, with an elevator directly from parking to the lobby, loading and unloading all your bike gear from the car is a very quick process. It’s also very easy to get in and out of the resort without sitting in village traffic.

For skiers, the perks are entirely the same, as the bike valet turns into a ski valet. If you hate making multiple trips to lug sports gear back and forth, the Westin Whistler is a great pick.

There are plenty of convenient on-site amenities

westin whistler review - fire rock lounge

FireRock Lounge looked like a perfect place for winter après-ski. Photo: Westin Whistler

The Westin Whistler is huge, and the first floor is part of the Whistler Village. That means you’ll find plenty of conveniences on site, including a gift shop and sundry store, several art galleries (including one that offers daily soapstone-carving classes ), a sushi and sake bar, and a grab-and-go coffee shop. There’s also the highly ranked Grill and Vine Restaurant and FireRock Lounge, the latter of which looked like an inviting, cozy, and comfortable spot for an après-ski cocktail or two.

But the best amenity to me was the spa and pool area, which we had almost entirely to ourselves during our stay. I got a sports massage, and my masseuse was able to figure out exactly what muscles were tight and needed extra focus work right away. It seemed like she was used to dealing with athletes and common muscle issues, which is pretty impressive, as the Westin’s massage prices were relatively low compared to other spas in the village.

After my massage, I spent some time relaxing in the indoor and outdoor hot tubs and using the big outdoor pool. It’s raised one level above the street, so it looks out on mountain views, not people and cars. There’s also a massive sun deck between the pool and restaurant, making an ideal spot for a summer cocktail after a day of playing outside.

Why not stay somewhere cheaper than the Westin Whistler?

westin whistler review - dog in village

On most dates, the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler is going to be the cheapest of the luxurious, ski-in, ski-out hotels in the Whistler Village. But there are cheaper places to stay with easy access to the lifts, restaurants, and shops. There’s the Pangea Pod Hotel (a hostel-style concept with curtain-separated “pods”) starting around $89 per night for midweek summer stays, and plenty of hotels priced along the lines of the Pinnacle Hotel Whistler , a three-star hotel with midweek summer rates starting around $170 a night (plus taxes and fees).

But if pod the size of a car backseat costs close to $100, and a basic hotel room is close to $200, paying around $300 for a larger, more luxurious room with a full kitchen and access to relaxing amenities doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch. Whistler is usually a pricey destination , but if you’re already planning to go there, you may find the price difference between a basic hotel and a swankier space to stay isn’t as big as you’d think. And when you add in the chance to relax by your private fireplace, access to a huge indoor and outdoor spa area, close access to ski lifts, and services like a bike valet, it’s fair to say you get a lot of bang for your buck.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

How to ‘ACE’ hospitality recruitment

Thanks to the lifting of travel restrictions in many regions, hotels are filling up again. However, instead of heaving a sigh of relief that the worst of the pandemic is over, hotel executives find themselves with a new problem on their hands: a lack of personnel.

Up to 70 percent of all hospitality workers in the United States 1 “AHLA data shows 70 percent of hotel employees laid off or furloughed,” TSNN, May 4, 2020. and the United Kingdom 2 “Coronavirus and its impact on UK hospitality: January 2020 to June 2021,” Office for National Statistics, July 19, 2021. were furloughed or laid off during the pandemic, and many employers are struggling to get them to return to work. Like their counterparts in other industries, hospitality employees have used the time off to reassess their priorities, and many have found new jobs that offer more flexibility.

Accustomed to this new way of working, many are reluctant to go back to their old positions, especially if they held roles waiting tables, cleaning rooms, and checking in guests. Such roles make up a significant portion of the hospitality and travel workforce in many markets, such as in the United Kingdom, where they account for 45 percent 3 Hospitality and tourism workforce landscape , Economic Insight, June 2019. of all jobs in the industry. While automation may reduce the workforce requirements for many of these functions in the future, the current labor crunch is worsening as demand for hospitality services in the immediate term spikes.

Even those who kept their jobs are likely to seek better career prospects elsewhere as more employment opportunities open up: around 40 percent of respondents in a McKinsey survey said that they are thinking about leaving their positions in the next three to six months —and many are even willing to quit without having another job lined up.

What’s changed and what can employers do to recruit—and retain—talented employees?

In this article, we delve into the five key talent acquisition trends that employers should be aware of. We also offer a simple approach for how they might “ACE” talent attraction: analyze talent suitability with digital tools; clearly define and communicate job requirements and career paths; and empower the HR department with the skills and tools they need to find and keep talented candidates.

Five hiring trends all hospitality employers should know

The pandemic has altered the hiring landscape in nearly every industry, including hospitality. Employers who equip themselves with a deep understanding of these five shifts in talent acquisition will be better able to adapt their hiring processes to staff their workforce with the talent their companies need to thrive into the future, as well as to recoup the losses incurred during the pandemic.

1. Digitization is radically changing hospitality roles

Like many other industries, hospitality is being transformed by digital and automation technologies. As such, many companies are rethinking their business models and workforce composition with an eye at simultaneously lowering costs and improving customer experience. In hotels, more guests are checking themselves in at self-help kiosks, and autonomous drones are delivering amenities directly to rooms, alleviating the labor shortage for some of the more labor-intensive functions.

As automation takes over more tasks currently performed by humans, new job roles will be created, especially to design and manage emerging technologies and digital solutions. It is estimated that 65 percent of primary-school students in 2030 will perform jobs that don’t yet exist. 4 The future of jobs report, Chapter 1: The future of jobs and skills , World Economic Forum, 2022. As hotels increasingly base decision making on customers’ booking and behavioral patterns, AI skills will grow in importance, and more data analyst positions will be created.

Hotel brands and other hospitality-focused companies have been rolling out customer-facing mobile apps, as they have found online digital channels to be especially effective at direct customer engagement. As such, more user experience (UX) designers will be needed to create attractive and intuitive customer journeys on these digital platforms and to continually optimize their design and functionality based on data analyses of customer engagement. Online marketing managers will also be needed to conceptualize and launch compelling campaigns and brand stories across mobile and other emerging platforms to entice potential customers.

To support all these shifts, software engineers will be needed to design and implement new AI solutions on the back end, as well as to optimize booking platforms on the front end and embed software for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

2. Employees are expecting more flexibility

The pandemic has debunked, to a large extent, the idea that work needs to be done exclusively in an office. Videoconferencing and cloud-based digital tools have enabled remote work without much loss in productivity, if any. And while many people around the world have begun returning to their workplaces, they have grown accustomed to the increased flexibility to manage work and personal commitments—a level of autonomy they are reluctant to relinquish. This has led many companies to implement numerous hybrid work models.

Job searches for remote work have nearly quintupled from June 2019 to June 2021. And while five years ago about a fifth of job postings offered the option to work remotely, nearly 80 percent of postings do today (exhibit). As jobs have become increasingly location agnostic, former hospitality workers have shown an unwillingness to return to jobs that require them to be tethered to reception desks, for example. Furthermore, candidates applying for digital roles in the hospitality sector expect the same flexibility offered in other industries.

Based in Germany, Koncept Hotel is an example of a company that has radically embraced the idea of remote work. Some of the hotel chain’s properties are almost entirely without staff, as everyone apart from the housekeeping team works remotely. A cloud-based automation system takes care of everything, from reservations and check-ins to payments and night audits.

Many roles in hospitality could be offered with remote-working options, including social-media managers, event planning consultants, accountants, marketing and PR executives, and customer support associates. Even a concierge can go virtual with the right technology support system in place.

But what about roles that have to be performed in person, such as housekeeping or waitstaff? To address this issue, employers may need to consider redesigning what a career in hospitality looks like. For example, if employees have a diverse portfolio of roles, they may be able to enjoy more flexibility in terms of work hours and location, along with a number of other benefits.

3. Hospitality careers are becoming more multifaceted

People who currently work in the hospitality industry often wear multiple hats out of necessity. Staffing shortages are straining the smooth running of daily operations, and guest-facing employees frequently have to perform different functions to keep service standards high. For example, many hotels equip receptionists with mobile tablets so they can double as concierges. And as more burned-out employees leave the hospitality workforce, the labor crunch will likely become more severe, especially for tasks that require a physical presence.

However, some hotels are taking this seemingly intractable challenge as an opportunity to reimagine what a career trajectory in hospitality looks like. While important, a paycheck has become only one among a number of factors candidates consider when accepting an offer. Employees seek a sense of fulfilment and meaning, and one way employers can foster personal and professional growth in hotel staff is to provide opportunities for them to expand their skill set.

In-person roles can become more rewarding for current employees and more attractive to talented candidates. Digitization can provide employees in service jobs with more flexibility in responsibilities and career growth. Some functions, such as housekeeping and reception, may require a physical presence, but an employee with a portfolio of in-person and location-agnostic duties may not have to spend all their workdays on-site. As career paths become more multifaceted, employees may also be able to command higher wages and greater satisfaction.

Companies could identify and offer top performers training opportunities for higher-skilled functions in other departments. For example, a member of the front-desk team may enroll in a social-media training program to learn how to conceptualize, run, and track the effectiveness of online campaigns. After completing the course, such employees could work with the hotel’s marketing department, contributing to digital campaigns, and, as such, work from home two days a week. Since front-desk employees have firsthand interactions with many guests, they could offer invaluable qualitative insights to the campaigns they work on, while at the same time deriving professional fulfillment from being involved in an interesting project, greater flexibility to balance their personal and professional commitments, as well as a higher salary.

Naturally, empowering staff to take on multiple roles requires an investment from hotel managers and executives. And as more employees work across functions, collaboration among different departments needs to be effective, and executives would have to build the right suite of digital and on-site training programs. A robust technology and communications stack could be key to reducing complexity and to opening up the instant communication channels needed for effective problem solving. Hyatt, for instance, has created a centralized digital workspace called Konverse, which includes communication channels and a task tracking system that enables daily collaboration for employees from front desk to housekeeping to engineering.

4. ESG cannot be ignored, even in hiring

Many employees take into consideration the social and environmental responsibility of a company when choosing a place to work. As customers, investors, and employees grow in their awareness of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) issues, hotels are reviewing every aspect of their corporate strategy and operations, including hiring practices and roles.

Many companies are finding it helpful to have a leadership position that provides oversight and coordinates best practices on issues pertaining to their climate impact. As examples, Carnival Cruise Line has a strategic sourcing manager in charge of sustainable procurement, and TUI Cruises has an environmental manager who is in charge of ensuring that all of the company’s functions are aligned with ESG standards. On a more granular level, more hotel chefs are being tasked with sourcing more locally, organically, and sustainably, and chains such as the Shaner Hotel Group hire eco guides to educate guests about the environment and plan eco-focused activities.

As customers, investors, and employees grow in their awareness of environmental, social, and governance issues, hotels are reviewing every aspect of their corporate strategy and operations.

When hiring, employers could also be paying more attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). A diverse and inclusive workforce contributes to greater employee satisfaction and is correlated with better economic performance . Companies could partner with external organizations and reassess their perks and benefits to foster greater inclusion. For instance, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants works with organizations such as Trans Can Work, The Mom Project, and DirectEmployers Association in their recruitment efforts, enabling the company to benefit from a diverse talent pool of candidates. Meanwhile, Hilton, which ranks second in Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 2022, uses a quarterly diversity dashboard to track a company’s diversity performance based on clear metrics and targets, including the makeup of its corporate leadership. To ensure a pipeline of diverse leaders for senior management, Hilton partners with universities such as Harvard and Cornell on external development programs.

5. The bar for hygiene will remain elevated

Even though restrictions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic are gradually being lifted, many hygiene protocols will likely endure beyond the pandemic. New roles and skills are needed to improve the coordination of hygiene-related initiatives across companies to protect the safety of both guests and employees.

For instance, some hotels have hired hygiene managers to revise sanitation protocols and oversee their implementation across the property. This requires coordinating with different subdepartments such as food and beverage, spa and wellness, and entertainment. The hygiene manager trains hotel staff on how to maintain hygiene standards and also works closely with the legal department and medical team to ensure that initiatives adhere to local laws and are grounded in science.

ACE talent acquisition

Hospitality employers may need to adapt their hiring practices in response to these five shifts. To start, we’ve come up with a broad approach that may help them ACE talent attraction and improve employee retention.

  • Analyze talent suitability with digital tools: Whittling down a pool of applicants is often done based on gut feeling and the personal experience of the recruiter, which is not only expensive but often ineffective—up to 80 percent of employee turnover is due to poor hiring decisions. Advanced data analytics can be a powerful tool to help identify appropriate candidates while reducing the subjective aspects of the screening process. An employer can define the specific talent they are looking for (analytic tools may help identify potential gaps) and work with a data analytics team to build a predictive model to identify likely characteristics of success, using it to sift through the stack of digital résumés. By implementing this approach, a fast-growing organization that struggled to retain high-performing sales talent managed to reduce first-year attrition by 23 percent and improve quality of new hires by 40 percent.
  • Clearly define and communicate job requirements and career paths: No one likes nasty surprises, so it’s best to avoid them by defining roles and their requirements early in the game. Each candidate and new employee should know how performance will be evaluated and the perks, support, and benefits they will enjoy when they join the company. While an employee’s career trajectory may change after joining a company, the candidate should be aware of the options available and the path they can expect when they receive an offer. In our experience, employers who use employee-centric design to optimize and customize a candidate’s career path within the organization, taking into account their unique attributes, skill sets, and interests, tend to be companies with the greatest impact and satisfaction rates among their staff.
  • Empower your HR department: A skilled HR team  makes all the difference, but building one requires investment and training. They should be trained to wield the digital tools they have at their disposal competently to screen the most suitable candidates quickly, identify reasons why candidates fall out of the recruitment funnel, and streamline the overall hiring process so that it doesn’t drag on for more than two weeks. Beyond these technical skills, the HR team should also know how to conduct smooth interviews. According to Workplace Trends, nearly 60 percent of job seekers have experienced poor interview processes, and 72 percent of them shared those experiences with others. Even when a candidate is not the perfect fit for a specific role, they may be suitable for another role, so it’s important for those who don’t get an offer to also feel valued.

Hotels and other hospitality players have a rare opportunity to rebuild their workforces by transforming their hiring practices. Those who keep these five trends in mind and adopt the ACE approach may find the industry’s brightest talents clamoring to join and grow in their ranks, delivering superlative guest experiences for a long time to come.
