Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Features, Pros And Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it is safe to argue that it’s a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind.

However, some travellers may feel that Tick Travel Insurance’s Top Policy falls a little short on nice-to-have coverage, including lost luggage and rental car excess limits. Let’s take a closer look at Tick’s top policy offering.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As is typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

To speak to someone on Tick Travel Insurance’s customer service team, you can fill in the online query form or email: [email protected] .

For 24-hour emergency assistance, you can call: +612 9333 3963, and for emergencies and claims, email: [email protected] .

You can also send written correspondence to:

Customer Services Tick Insurance Australia Suite 1.04, Level 1, 19 Harris Street Pyrmont, 2009 Sydney NSW

Additionally, you can send a complaint via post, or email: [email protected] .

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

Existing customers and those with service queries can fill in Tick Travel Insurance’s online query form should they need assistance, or contact at [email protected].

For 24-hour emergency assistance customers can call: +612 9333 3963.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.

Choose from four tiers of policies based on how much cover you think you'll need on holiday: Basic, Budget, Standard or Top. Here are some of the main insured events a Tick travel insurance policy can cover you for:

Luggage

The insurance is issued and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited and comes with a cooling-off period and a $200 standard excess.

The cooling-off period is 14 days and allows you to cancel your policy within this period for a full refund if you decide it is no longer suitable. The excess is the amount you're required to pay when you make a claim. With Tick travel insurance, you can choose to remove the excess and pay an additional premium or double it to reduce your premium.

  • Upload any documents relevant to your claim
  • Submit and your claim should be evaluated within 10 business days

Tick serves up some important benefits such as unlimited overseas medical cover and up to $20,000 for trip cancellation expenses. Some nice-to-have features such as loss of income cover and pet care expenses might be just what you're looking for in a travel insurance policy.

Where Tick might fall short for you, is when it comes to time to claim. Certain benefits don't kick in unless you meet very specific criteria. Travel delay expenses, for example, aren't claimable unless you've been delayed for more than 12 hours. Many other insurers will cover you after a 6-hour delay.

Purchasing a travel insurance policy does take a bit of pre-reading and with Tick travel insurance, this is even more important. Take the time to read the Product Disclosure Statement in full so you'll be confident that you're getting the right amount of cover for your trip.

If you're still not sure about Tick, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

Is Tick Travel Insurance good?

Yes, Tick Travel Insurance can be a good option for many types of travellers. You'll find some generous benefit limits and nice-to-have extras with its top-tier policies. You'll just need to make sure you review the PDS to make sure Tick will cover you for everything you've got planned on your trip.

What is the Tick Travel Insurance phone number?

You can contact Tick's emergency assistance line on +612 9333 3963 and general enquiries can be sent to [email protected].

What is Tick's cancellation policy?

Tick Travel Insurance has a 14 day cooling off period. As long as you have not begun your trip or made any claims, you can cancel your policy during this time and receive a refund.

Cancellation after this 14 days period is still possible but will be a refund of the proportion of the premium for the outstanding period of cover less any government charges and taxes that Tick cannot recover.

When will Tick recommence international travel insurance ( to Thailand)

Hi Christos,

As you’ll know, certain restrictions have been imposed on international travel and these are rapidly changing. That’s had a major impact on travel insurance policies.

You can reach out to Tick directly to enquire about this further.

Alternatively, compare your options on our guide to COVID travel insurance .

I hope this helps.

Best, James

I’m going on a cruise to New Zealand. I declared my pre-existing medical condition but they didn’t charge me a premium for it but I got a medical number from Tick. Is this correct?

Avatar

Thanks for getting in touch with Finder. I hope all is well with you. 😃

Regarding your question, Tick Travel Insurance generally assesses pre-existing medical conditions on a case by case basis. They might have considered your condition as mild and don’t need additional premium to get covered.

If you need to confirm with them, you can also get in touch with Tick just to be sure.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

Have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Joshua

I have a holiday in Fiji booked for March of next year and my friend can no longer come with me. I am 70 years old and am not able to go on that holiday alone. It looks like I will have to cancel, can I get any of my money back?

Hi Patrica,

I’m sorry to hear about your need to cancel your holiday trip.

Regarding your question, if you are asking if you can cancel your Tick Travel Insurance policy, the answer is yes. However, please note that you need to cancel your policy within the 14 day cooling off period following any purchase.

However, if you are asking if you can cancel your trip and get a refund from your bookings, that would depend on your provider. Best is to get in touch with your provider in this case. Moreover, if you cancel your trip, Tick Travel Insurance policies can cover the money you will lose as a result.

Is ambulance cover included in your travel insurance policies?

Thanks, Karen

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

Under Tick Travel Insurance’s Medical and Hospital benefits, they will cover ambulance cost if you need that as part of the medical treatment while overseas. For more info on what you will be covered, please reach out to Tick Travel directly.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Is Tick Travel Insurance Good? An In-Depth Review

Travel insurance is an essential consideration when planning a trip, whether for business or pleasure. Among the many options available, Tick Travel Insurance has gained popularity in recent years. But is Tick Travel Insurance good? In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at the company’s offerings, customer reviews, and overall value to help you make an informed decision.

Is Tick Travel Insurance Good? An In-Depth Review Is Tick Travel Insurance Good

What Does Tick Travel Insurance Offer?

Tick Travel Insurance provides a range of coverage options to suit various travel needs. Their policies include:

  • Comprehensive Plan: This plan offers the most extensive coverage, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical expenses, baggage loss, and more.
  • Domestic Plan: Designed for travellers within Australia, this plan covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, rental car excess, and personal liability.
  • Basic Plan: This budget-friendly option provides essential coverage for overseas medical expenses, personal liability, and baggage loss.

The Importance of Comprehensive Coverage

When choosing a travel insurance provider, it’s crucial to ensure that you have adequate coverage for your specific needs. Tick Travel Insurance’s Comprehensive Plan is an excellent choice for travellers who want peace of mind knowing they’re protected against a wide range of potential issues.

Consider these statistics:

  • Unexpected Events:   According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, approximately 25% of Australians encounter unforeseen events while travelling abroad. This high incidence highlights the importance of having robust travel insurance that can handle unexpected situations, from medical emergencies to trip cancellations.
  • Medical Emergency Costs:  Medical emergencies while traveling can be substantial. For instance, the average cost of an overseas medical emergency can reach AUD 10,000. This figure underscores the significance of having unlimited medical coverage, which Tick Travel Insurance provides in its Comprehensive Plan, ensuring that unexpected medical expenses do not financially burden travellers.
  • Luggage Issues:  Travel complications often involve luggage issues. Statistics indicate that around 20% of travellers experience lost or stolen luggage during their trips. Tick Travel Insurance addresses this concern by offering up to AUD 7,500 coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage under its Top Policy, providing significant relief in such stressful situations.

Benefits of Tick Travel Insurance:

  • Comprehensive coverage options with 4 cover levels—Basic, Budget, Standard , and Top—allow travellers to select a policy that suits their needs and budget.
  • All plans cover unlimited overseas medical expenses, including ambulance costs, emergency surgery, medical repatriation, and coverage in the event of death overseas.
  • All pre-existing medical conditions are considered when you apply online, especially under the top levels of cover.
  • Baggage cover for lost, stolen or damaged luggage up to $7,500 on the Top plan.
  • Free coverage for children under 18 when they travel with an insured parent.
  • Trip cancellation coverage is up to $20,000 on the Top plan for unforeseen events.
  • Coverage for travel delays, trip interruption, rental car excess, and pregnancy up to 30 weeks.
  • Affordable premiums start as low as $19 for basic coverage, with the ability to tailor coverage by destination and duration.
  • 24-hour emergency assistance for policyholders.
  • Simple online claims process with the ability to track claims.

Drawbacks of Tick Travel Insurance:

  • Difficult claims process with excessive paperwork requirements.   Customers have reported that Tick requires all original receipts as proof to make a claim, which can be challenging. The claims process involves “so much paperwork” and “they take ages.”
  • Poor communication and customer service.  Some reviews mention that Tick is “non-contactable” with “poor communication”. Emails from customers have bounced back, and it can be hard to get in touch with the company.
  • Reluctance to pay out legitimate claims.  Despite marketing itself as a budget-friendly option, multiple customers have alleged that Tick is a “scam” and “will not pay you out if you decide to make a claim.” One review states that Tick took over five weeks to reject a simple claim.
  • High excesses of $200 on all policies   mean customers need to pay the first $200 of any claim before insurance kicks in, which can raise the real cost more than expected.
  • Cheaper policies like Basic and Budget  do not include any COVID-19-related coverage for medical costs or cancellations. Customers need to purchase the more expensive Standard or Top plans for this.
  • Some reviews mention difficulty printing policy documents , determining cruise coverage, and getting clear information about pre-existing condition coverage.

Up until working with Casey, we had only had poor to mediocre experiences outsourcing work to agencies. Casey & the team at CJ&CO are the exception to the rule.

Communication was beyond great, his understanding of our vision was phenomenal, and instead of needing babysitting like the other agencies we worked with, he was not only completely dependable but also gave us sound suggestions on how to get better results, at the risk of us not needing him for the initial job we requested (absolute gem).

This has truly been the first time we worked with someone outside of our business that quickly grasped our vision, and that I could completely forget about and would still deliver above expectations.

I honestly can't wait to work in many more projects together!

What is travel insurance?: How to choose the best cover for a stress-free vacation

How to choose the best travel insurance for a stress-free vacation

If you’ve been longing for a sun-drenched beach holiday or yearning for a cultural city break, then it might be worth considering travel insurance .

Investing in good travel insurance can bring welcome peace of mind and could save you thousands in the long run, not to mention time and stress if the unexpected happens.

Whether you're planning a work trip, solo excursion, or big family adventure, choosing from the wealth of travel insurance companies and plans on offer can be daunting. Here we breakdown:

What travel insurance covers

When you might need it and what type to choose

How cost is calculated and how to pay only what you need

Tips for the best experience with travel insurance companies

Before you pack those bags for your getaway, let’s take an in-depth look at what you need to know about travel insurance.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a billion-dollar industry where companies fiercely compete to win the top spot. From flight cancellation, delays and property loss to medical and other expenses, the major areas typically covered by travel insurance are:

Trip cancellation: Life throws curve balls at us, and having trip cancellation insurance from an insurer like Mexiplas International could be the crucial safety net you need. It can cover unexpected illness, injury, family sickness and bereavement, potentially reimbursing you 100% on prepaid, non-refundable deposits with ''cancel for any reason’’ coverage.

Medical: This is important insurance for overseas travel as your local health plan may not cover medical treatment. These policies often include limitations and exclusions for preexisting conditions, but cover doctors, hospital, and ambulance bills.

Emergency evacuation or repatriation: Crucial if you're off the grid or traveling to remote locations (think trekking through the Amazon Jungle or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro) where medical care might be hard to find. If you're injured or get sick you’ll need to get to an adequate medical facility ASAP, or a flight home for treatment.

Car hire insurance: Renting a car can bring significant financial risk. Car rental insurance allows you to enjoy your trip worry-free. Check whether insurance includes liability protection. This will pay for damage to other vehicles or medical treatment for others if there’s an accident.

Loss of property: This coverage reimburses you for baggage or personal belongings that are lost, stolen, or damaged during a trip.

Travel delays: Mammoth flight delays and cancellations can mean missed connections or leave you stranded. With insurance, you can be reimbursed for meals, accommodation, and transport expenses.

Accidental death: A worst-case scenario, this insurance pays your beneficiaries a lump sum, supporting them should the worst happen.

COVID-19 travel: A newer type of insurance on offer is COVID-19 travel insurance. Some policies cover you if you contract the virus right before the trip, during your trip, or on your return. Check the small print to ensure you’re getting what you've been promised from your provider.

What travel insurance doesn’t usually cover

Now that we know what your plan can cover, it's just as important to know what isn't covered. Much depends on the policy and insurer you go for. Some features may only be available at an extra cost. Generally, plans don’t cover:

Adventure and extreme sports such as hand gliding, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, and skydiving. You'll need to buy a special travel policy if you're an adrenaline junkie

Alcohol or drug-related incidents

Carelessness with possessions e.g., leaving them unattended or in plain sight

Recklessness (varies from company to company)

Pre-existing health conditions

Lost or stolen cash

Civil unrest that makes staying in a country unsafe, but your government hasn't announced an evacuation

Pandemics, earthquakes, and acts of terrorism

How much is it?

First things first, think about your destination - what are the risks? Will there be appropriate health care? These are areas that affect the cost of your travel insurance:

Length and cost of the trip: the longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local healthcare: high costs at your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions: conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and scale of coverage: the more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: generally, the older you are, the higher the price.

How to choose the best travel insurance for a stress-free vacation(2)

How to get the best insurance coverage for you

Before you launch into travel insurance research and sign on the dotted line, check to see if you’re covered already:

Credit cards: Booked a trip or rental car with your credit card? Trip cancellation and car insurance are sometimes included in your purchase. You might need to take out additional insurance to guarantee you’re fully covered for your trip.

Homeowner insurance: See if your renters’ or homeowners’ insurance covers loss of property while on vacation.

Life insurance: Speaking of insurance, dig out your life insurance policy (if you have one) to see if you're already covered for accidental death.

If you’re not already covered then here are some good places to start:

Travel agents and reservation sites: When you book a flight, hotel, or car through an agent or reservation site you can often add travel insurance. Note though that you usually can't customize it to suit your needs.

Travel insurance companies You could try travel insurance companies like Traveler Assistant Services to find a policy to fit your trip requirements. Check out multiple websites to compare coverage and pricing.

Comparison sites: Using your trip criteria, compare travel insurance policies, provider, and pricing in one place. These sites often show the best travel insurance deals with customer reviews .

Tips for making a claim on travel insurance

Where you go and what you intend to do affect the type of insurance you’ll need. These are common mistakes to avoid to get a quick turnaround when placing a claim:

Don’t exaggerate your claim: Whatever your claim, you want to be reimbursed pronto. Don't embellish the details, it's travel insurance fraud and you don't want to land in hot water. Keep to the facts and get your claim accepted, not denied.

Documentation for loss: Keep all official documentation safe (resort invoices, flight tickets, receipts, medical bills etc.) as you'll need it to back up any claim.

Maximum limits and small print: Sometimes plans aren't as beneficial as they initially appear. Every plan has specific limits for each benefit shown in detail. Triple check them to be on the safe side.

Don't wait to file a claim: Fill in your claim quickly and correctly making sure all copies of your documentation are included, or you may miss out.

Green tick travel insurance: disastrous experience.

My recent encounter with Green Tick Travel Insurance has left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. Despite purchasing top cover, including 24-hour medical assistance, the company has not only failed to pay our claim over two months after the event but has also shown a complete lack of assistance during our time of need. This review aims to shed light on the abysmal service provided by Green Tick Travel Insurance, cautioning potential customers to think twice before entrusting their travel safety to this company. Unfulfilled Promises: One of the main reasons we chose Green Tick Travel Insurance was their promise of comprehensive coverage and round-the-clock medical assistance. However, when I found myself in a dire situation, their response was far from what we expected. I required timely medical assistance, needing to access urgent services, including a medical evacuation. We had requested preauthorisation and, it became evident that their claims of providing assistance were nothing more than empty words. Could not get a timely response and therefore had to pay significant costs upfront for potentially lifesaving treatments. We were fortunate to have access to a credit card and funds via family back in Australia to cover up front costs. Lack of Payment:To add insult to injury, Green Tick Travel Insurance has not yet paid out our claim, despite the fact that we held what we believed to be top cover. Their lack of transparency and failure to pay out our claim in a timely manner is not only disheartening but also raises serious questions about their integrity as an insurance provider. It is clear that their commitment to their customers’ well-being is nothing more than a façade. We have since been asked to fill out form after form and answer not applicable questions. Unhelpful Customer Service:When we finally managed to reach their customer service department, we were met with unhelpful and dismissive attitudes. Instead of addressing our concerns and providing the assistance we desperately needed, they seem more interested in deflecting blame and avoiding responsibility and have since stopped replaying to emails and despite numerous requests have not returned out calls. This complete disregard for customer satisfaction is utterly unacceptable and reflects a lack of professionalism on their part. Conclusion:My experience with Green Tick Travel Insurance has been nothing short of a nightmare. Their failure to fulfill their promises, refusal to pay our claim, and unhelpful customer service have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I strongly advise potential customers to steer clear of this company and explore other options for their travel insurance needs. Green Tick Travel Insurance has proven itself to be unreliable, unworthy of our hard-earned money and untrustworthy to take care of travel insurance needs.

Don't fall for the Tick scam!!

I found the travel insurance policy which I purchased with Tick to be a total waste of money. My luggage was recently lost by the airline whilst travelling. I had originally purchased the most premium of Tick's insurance policies, however when I contacted their claims department, the only items that they told me that they are prepared to reimburse me for is for essential clothes and toiletries. The stipulation was that all non-English receipts need to be officially translated. The thing is that I can buy some basic clothing for less than €100 Euros but will spend 3 times as much in getting all invoices translated. So basically it will cost me more money to lodge a claim. I will also not be reimbursed for the laptop which I kept in my suitcase. I am therefore cutting my losses and will cut short my trip and return early as it's simply going to be too expensive to both holiday and replace my lost items. By the way, Tick will not cover the cost associated with my change of ticket request. Despite having top cover and being insured for delayed baggage, personal belongings, and cutting my trip short, Tick have simply broken all the rules and not interested in looking at looking at my claim. I will not use Tick again and I don't recommend them. Please avoid at all costs. The Tick brand has no value and seems to be a complete scam

Terrible experience with tick insurance

My father in law passed away in Germany 5 days prior to my flight back to Australia. Tick insurance rejected my claim for cancelled airfares - which I had to cancel for obvious reasons - due to the death being in Germany, not Australia. This feels like a loophole they are using to avoid a very legitimate claim. I shouldn't be surprised, I guess, but this is not what I would have hoped for with the top level of cover and is certainly not what I needed at this time.

Discourage, Delay , Deny was my Travel Insurance

Tick Insurance has it covered ..... you sort of. For example be aware that if you make a lost baggage claim you will require proof of ownership, which means a receipt for each and every item in your baggage that you wish to claim for and then these items are subject to a depreciation schedule.. In your PDS page 50 " proof of ownership" to be read in conjunction with page 27 section E1 personal baggage Medical Claim be aware you will need to provide a copy of your outward and inward flight itineary, medicare number, receipts for medical expenses claimed along with a copy of bank credit card statement showing payment for items claimed. Most importantly you will need a medical certificate from your doctor ouitlining your "exact" diagnosis and without this your claim will be rejected as in my case and this took 29 days from when the claim was lodged until I was advised of my rejected claim. Worth asking about alchohol tolerance if any as this information is available to your insurer via hospital blood test so worth knowing if your insurance is still with you. Tick unbelievably has award winning rating mainly based on competitive pricing and the level of apparent inclusions.... how would your baggage claim work for you

AVOID THIS COMPANY

AVOID THIS COMPANY This company screams dodgy. I purchased travel insurance through them and then received an email asking to submit a review of my experience. (you literally haven't done anything, but explains how they have some good reviews on here) One of my flights got cancelled etc, so I logged in to submit a claim. The Portal just goes to an error message page. this kept happening for the new few days. I finally emailed them on two occasions and have not heard a peep back. AVOID this company.

Legitimate claim

Tried to deny payment of legitimate claim which was covered by their PDS. Took 9 months and application to AFCA for them to finally settle.

Scammers/thieves.

I bought cover with the option to cancel three months before COVID hit. I rang to tell them my wedding holiday was cancelled and they told me the cancellation period was 14 days after purchase. They have since told me I qualify for a refund less than 43% of the purchase price because my policy did come into effect for those 14 days. If I had have gone with the policy that didn't allow cancellation they would have offered me a full refund. Avoid at all cost.

Easy to deal with.

Tick insurance have great rates even on the snow add on. Very easy to claim if needed, all sorted in a timely fashion. I would use them again and again.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

We are elderly and had saved for this trip for some time. Booked and paid with Virgin, and trick Insurance last to November. Despite emailing every possible piece of information that we had been given, including bank statements, it was never enough. So, in frustration I asked for my money ($840) back for no service. Hell no, they are keeping it come what may, and pretend that "sorry, we just can't give it back", as though their hands are tied despite desperately wanting to do the right thing. In my honest opinion a Parisian sewer rat would have more morals than this crowd.

Do Not Insure With Tick Travel Insurance!

I am in a situation of been ripped off due to "Tick insurance". I have logged a claim for a family trip to Vanuatu for a friend's wedding that was cancelled with insurance taken out in 2019 pre COVID-19 for a trip in April 2020. Got the wonderful news months after the claim after extremely poor communication (lack of a phone number to talk to someone, no responses to questions regarding cancellation and long timeframes) that our claim was rejected as credit was offered by the travel company. A credit is all well and good if you can use it! My wife is pregnant with our second child due in Sept 2020, so a trip to a country that has malaria problems with a newborn that cannot take preventative medication until 18 months. In addition our first child would need an extra seat incurring extra cost due to age requirements. This rules any use of these credits out and any suggestion we can use the credit is ridiculous. THIS WAS MENTIONED IN THE CLAIM sent to Tick! I have my suspicions that the claims have not been reviewed fairly or thoroughly due to generic statements in your reply and lack of correspondence. It is appalling that Tick is preying genuine claims and in my case an expecting family. I have lodged an internal dispute hoping that common sense will prevail on Tick's behalf. Unfortunately Tick has not responded within its two week commitment window. After a phone call to the call centre by us, there was a commitment by Tick that we would be contacted within 48 hours, which didn't happen. After a further follow-up call we still cannot speak to anyone but a call centre operator who cannot help us. I will be forced to pursue other means to recover my rightful insurance claim. Extremely disappointed in Tick to say the least! Tick do not have any social media pages, although I have tried to reach out to the parent company. Tick just need to do the right thing that so many other travel insurance companies are doing currently and pay up! Regards, Swindled Tick Customer

Not good, very bad

They don't pay on your policy. Don't waste your money.

go else where

Don't waste your money go with some one else they are no go. They don't pay up on a policy.

They are hopeless, don't go there

Don't trust them, they don't pay up when you claim. They give you a heap of lies as to why. It's a waste of money. Just stay away and money go else where. Don't waste your money.

Poor customer service and hiding behind policy

Spend each week trying to get hold of their customer services only to be promised a call back or email response. Having brought their comprehensive travel insurance I was told they would honour any cancellation claims however, I have found out that their requirements are designed to make any claim almost impossible. The travel agents and accommodation places are not responding to emails and according Tick I need them to provide a cancellation certificate. GotoGate and MyTrips have even disconnected their hot line. I also had a boat trip in Colombia booked and they are not responding. Airlines such as Copa and Interjet will not provide any information saying I need to go travel agents I booked through. It's a vicious circle where travel agents do not respond and Tick Insurance (after getting a response) refuse to pay out on any claim unless they have a formal cancellation certificate. There is no compassion or understanding of the impacts of COVID and being able to get cancellation certificates. I have provided my credit card and bank statements sowing payment, airfare tickets and accommodation bookings all clearly labelled non refundable. Think twice before purchasing Tick Insurance You may think you are covered however, this assumes you are able to get all the information required under their policy which may not be attainable in extreme events such as the COVID pandemic. ---- Since writing the above, TICK Insurance have completely and utterly attempted to frustrate things further with the same requests. The most recent is to get a cancellation notice from the US Department of Immigration to say my Visa application is cancelled. Similar to hotels with a non refundable non cancellation policy, the US Dept of Immigration are not going to cancel nor provide a cancellation notice yet TICK are refusing to cover the costs. I would add TICK customer service could not be this poor. They have made a decision to frustrate claims in the hope their customers give up and go away. Very poor given the circumstances. All I want to be reimbursed for out of travel expenses which are covered under my comprehensive travel policy. How can this be unreasonable? Please re-consider TICK if you are looking at travel insurance. It's a Policy thwart with exceptions and terms which make it impossible claim.

Called me a liar.

I tried to reschedule my insurance today as it was no longer needed due to coronavirus but got told by a customer service rep that I had called the day before to confirm I needed it and it is now too late. Considering I was at work the whole day and have no recollection of doing this they assure me I did, however they can't tell me when I called, who took the message or why I would need insurance for a trip I had cancelled five days earlier. Tried to speak with a manager but they were all too busy so I'm not expecting any joy from this mob. Price is pretty cheap but you get what you pay for I suppose, I won't be using them again and can't recommend them as an insurer.

But whatever your needs, these 10 picks are financially stable, reliable companies with a good track record and comprehensive coverage.

Our Top 10 Travel Insurance Providers

Best : Overall, and for families with kids Travelex Insurance Services is a leading travel insurance provider based in Omaha, Neb. The company's travel insurance policies are underwritten by Old Republic Insurance Company and Transamerica Casualty Insurance company, which has a financial rating of A+ from A.M. Best, and TransAmerica Casualty Insurance Company, which has A.M. Best ratings of A. It is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, which gives it an A+ rating.

Coverage: Travelex offers two main coverage plans - basic and select (family-friendly) - and two flight insurance opt-ins. They offer protection for both leisure and business travelers. Like many companies here, they cover younger children (17 and under) at no additional cost. The company boasts a high claims paid rate (previously reported at 94 percent).

Website/mobile apps: The Travelex mobile website allows you to shop and purchase policies, get emergency assistance, and access trip-related documents from your phone. You can initiate a claim and check the status of your claim online.

Today Allianz is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, which gives them an A+ rating. Its financial rating from A.M. Best is A+.

All of its plans include concierge service and 24-hour emergency assistance.

Website/mobile apps: TravelGuard has an online Claims tool that allows clients to easily file a claim from a computer or mobile device. The tool speeds up the claims process while allowing users to upload photos and documents, electronically sign claims forms, and check the status of a claim from their phones.

Best for : Traveling with pets San Diego-based Generali Global Assistance has provided travel insurance since 1991. The insurance division has previously been known as CSA Travel Protection. Generali Global is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating and an A financial rating from A.M. Best.

Coverage: CSA offers three plans: Standard, Preferred and Premium. It covers telemedicine services with its plans and medical costs if a person becomes sick or injured during their trip. It also reimburses medical costs if you pay out of pocket. As with most travel insurance companies, CSA offers 24/7 emergency assistance, concierge services, identity theft resolution services and a 10-day "free look" period. If you change your mind within 30 days of purchasing the insurance and before you start your trip, the company will provide a full refund. It offers pet relocation services: If you have a medical emergency and cannot take care of your pet while on vacation, it will return your pet home. It also has a Pet Service Locator to help you find vets or other pet services on your travels. For pre-existing medical conditions, you would need to purchase the Premium plan before or at least 24 hours in advance of your final trip payment. You will also need to be medically able to travel, and your prepaid expenses are insured.

Website/mobile apps: They walk you through the claim-filing process step-by-step on their website .

Sample online quote: Family of four, going on a 10-day, $10,000 trip: $298.52 Standard / $346.28 Preferred / $398 Premium

Best for : Budget Adventure Travel World Nomads has targeted its insurance at independent travellers and adventure-seekers. If your vacation includes activities like kite sailing, snowboarding, or bungee jumping, this might be the company for you. The company is recommended by Lonely Planet and National Geographic Adventure... But you don't have to be an adventure seeker to benefit from the very competitive rates offered by World Nomads. The company's policies are underwritten by Lloyd's, which has an A financial rating from A.M. Best.

Coverage: World Nomad offers two levels of insurance plans, which include all of the typical coverage options. In addition, it offers coverage for cameras, laptops, digital gear, and all sorts of travel activities.

Experts recommend you do your homework before buying a travel insurance policy. The industry is known for excessive exclusions and confusing language in small print. The National Consumer League recommends that you:

Check to see if you're already covered through another policy. Lots of insurance policies (including home, auto, and life) and credit cards offer partial coverage for trip interruption or medical emergencies.

Read the fine print - especially regarding exclusions. Things like pre-existing conditions, pregnancy-related issues, job loss or travel in a country that has reported a high threat of terrorism may be excluded.

Remember that you can get your money back. Lots of travel insurance companies allow you to get your money back if you cancel the plan within ten days (before travel).

Don't purchase travel insurance through airlines. Airlines aggressively push these cancellation insurance plans and pay commissions of 10 to 40 percent to the travel agents who sell them.

Consumer Reports recommends that you use an online travel insurance broker to search for a good match for your travel. Sites like Squaremouth , InsureMyTrip.com , or QuoteWright.com all allow you to shop and compare quotes. Even if you use such a service, however, Consumer Reports recommends contacting the carrier directly to go over the coverage and fine print before purchasing a policy.

U.S. Travel Insurance Association (USTIA) This professional association represents travel insurance companies and promotes ethical and professional industry standards. You can search its database for member organizations.

National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Provides information and advice for consumers regarding when and how to purchase travel insurance.

Insurance Information Institute (III) The III is dedicated to promoting a public understanding of insurance. It has a page providing travel insurance facts.

Your state Insurance Commissioner All insurance is regulated at the state level. NAIC provides an interactive map so that you can click on your state and be directed to your state's Insurance Commissioner.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) The BBB allows you to search its vast online database to check on the reputation and any complaints that have been filed against a company.

Competitive cost for pre-existing health conditions

We have used TravelTime twice now and have our next holiday insured with them too. My husband has pre-existing conditions which are all covered at a very competitive price. Thankfully we have never had to make a claim, (always a bonus). On our return, we get a welcome back email, which I think is a lovely touch. I highly recommend.

Always use TravelTime for our holiday insurance. Great value, feel the policy is tailored to our needs. Also love the communication e-mails that keep us informed of any travel changes we may need to know. We don't bother shopping around for travel insurance just head straight for TravelTime.

Good Service

I used TravelTime insurance last year (2023) having found them through Confused.com. Imagine how surprised I was to find they were based in my home city. Fortunately I did not need to make a claim so cant comment on that side of things. Phoning their customer services I got to speak with a real person in 1 minute 30 seconds, which I thought was good. We have found TravelTime to be very competitively priced and have bought our holiday insurance through them again this year. We recommended TravelTime to relatives who are holidaying with us this year and they have purchased a policy as well.

We took out travel insurance through these and were unfortunate enough for my partner who is on the policy also to get food poisoning whilst on holiday. The claims process is impossible they divert us to csal who will not pay out even on a valid claim. All we get is we need more information which even though they have the information they requested twice they say the email came through blank. I believe this is a rip off. Please avoid unless you don’t like your money any longer

Had this travel insurance now for 3/4 years had no trouble at all even had to make a claim about 2 years ago when my wife fell in lanzarote and had all the help i needed after a phone call while my wife was in hospital getting scans and they even spoke to the receptionist at the hospital in spanish so everyone understood what was happening only had to pay £99 excess at hospital and insurance sorted all the rest just what we needed while abroad so will always use this excellent firm and always recommend to other people after our bad experience on holiday and how smoothly and quickly travel time sorted the insurance

Do not get travel insurance with this company…

Do not get travel insurance with this company! Our son contracted impetigo on holiday and the doctor advised and gave us evidence that he must not go to the pool / communal areas. This is definitely a travel insurance claim but of course they found a way to get out of paying! Avoid at all costs!! You will not be covered!

Date of experience : 06 October 2023

Your claim sounds like it was for ‘loss of enjoyment’ which I’m afraid isn’t covered by our policies or by any travel insurance provider in the UK. If I’m wrong then please contact me via the office so that I can investigate this further. Kind regards, Darren @ TravelTime

Lemonade insurance review 2024: reliable, affordable products for renters and pet owners.

Lemonade Insurance Review

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

Lemonade is an insurance company with a focus on offering affordable products and giving back. Consumers can rely on Lemonade for homeowners insurance, renter’s insurance, auto insurance, coverage for pets, and life insurance. In addition, the insurance company gives a percentage of premiums to various charities that support the environment, LGBTQ+ rights, and more.

While all insurance products offered through Lemonade are trustworthy and reputable, the company's renter’s insurance has the best ratings across Lemonade products.

TIME’s Take

Lemonade promises affordable rates and transparency when it comes to its insurance products, although customers who choose this company give up the personalized insurance experience they can get with other providers. Instead of having agents price out policies and give advice on its insurance offerings, Lemonade has its customers choose coverage, file claims, and deal with customer service issues over the phone or using the Lemonade app.

Who is Lemonade Insurance for?

Due to the mostly digital experience Lemonade offers, it's best for people who are comfortable using technology and don't necessarily need access to a dedicated insurance agent. Lemonade plans are also made for individuals and families who are interested in basic insurance without all the bells and whistles.

Individuals who like the idea of giving back or working with companies who have a heart may also be impressed with Lemonade's business model.

Lemonade car insurance.

Lemonade auto insurance promises fair prices that are "based on the way you drive." The company uses location-based technology to set auto insurance premiums, and customers get emergency crash assistance and free roadside assistance included in their plans. Because of the way Lemonade prices its auto insurance policies, people who drive less pay less. Individuals with EV and hybrid vehicles can also pay lower auto insurance rates overall.

Interestingly, Lemonade uses its technology to assess the environmental impact of its drivers. From there, it plants trees to help mitigate impacts to the environment and clean up the air. Note that Lemonade auto insurance is only available in Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

  • Pay less when you drive less
  • Special discounts for EV and hybrid vehicles
  • Includes free roadside assistance
  • Only available in 7 states
  • Cannot be used to drive for Uber or Lyft
  • Location tracking cannot be disabled

Lemonade says its auto insurance rates start at $30 per month and vary based on your driving profile. You may also pay higher premiums than average based on the car you drive, where you live, and other factors.

How does Lemonade life insurance compare?

Company history.

Originally founded in 2015, Lemonade claims to be the first "peer-to-peer insurance company" in the world. The firm bases this claim on its unique business model that charges users a flat fee for services and uses the rest of company funds to pay claims and run their business. Lemonade also forks over a percentage of customer premiums to various charitable organizations.

While Lemonade originally started as a homeowners insurance provider, the company has since launched additional insurance products including pet insurance and auto insurance. Lemonade has received a Financial Stability Rating® of A-Exceptional from Demotech Inc., and the company is reinsured by huge leading insurance brands such as Swiss Re, Munich Re, and Hannover Re.

Bottom line

If you're looking for a new type of insurance that can be bought and managed entirely online, Lemonade should be on your list. This technology-based company offers home insurance, renter’s insurance, car insurance, pet insurance, and term life insurance, all of which can be priced out and purchased online or through the company's highly-rated mobile app.

Just remember that Lemonade policies aren't available in every state. Also make sure to compare coverage you receive along with premiums, deductibles, and other details to make sure you're getting the best deal for the protections you need.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is Lemonade a trustworthy insurance company?

Lemonade is a trustworthy insurance company that has received positive ratings from a range of third-party companies. The company is reinsured by huge leading insurance brands like Swiss Re, Munich Re, and Hannover Re.

Why is Lemonade insurance so cheap?

Lemonade insurance coverage can be more affordable since the company focuses on offering basic protections without all the bells and whistles you can get with other plans. Also note that Lemonade charges a flat fee for its services and uses the rest of the premiums paid in to cover claims and keep the company in operation.

What is the Lemonade insurance controversy?

In 2021, Lemonade faced a class action lawsuit based on claims that it collected and stored biometric data from its customers without their consent. In 2022, it settled the case for $4 million .

Lemonade vs. Trupanion

Trupanion is another company that offers pet insurance specifically, and its policies feature unlimited payouts for life. Pet insurance from Trupanion is made to cover hereditary and congenital conditions, illnesses, injuries, and more. Coverage from Trupanion also pays your vet bills directly instead of having you request reimbursement after the fact (unlike Lemonade), and it offers one simple plan that intends to cover all your pet's healthcare needs when they become hurt or sick.

One major difference between Trupanion and Lemonade is the fact that Trupanion made the decision not to cover routine wellness care. This means you cannot upgrade a Trupanion plan to get coverage for wellness checkups, flea and tick control, or regular exams. In contrast, Lemonade offers optional wellness and routine care packages that pay for regular vet care that keeps your pet in the best possible health.

Lemonade vs. Spot

Spot is another pet insurance company that offers coverage similar to what you get with Lemonade. Spot policies offer up to 90% back on veterinary bills, and customers can visit any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada. Customers can choose from accident and illness coverage or accident-only coverage, and preventative care plans are also available.

Other standout features that come with Spot include a 30-day money back guarantee on coverage and unlimited telehealth visits in every plan. Like Lemonade, however, Spot has customers pay their vet bills directly then apply for reimbursement after care has been received.

Lemonade vs. State Farm

State Farm is an iconic insurance brand that offers most types of coverage consumers and businesses can buy. For example, individuals can turn to State Farm for homeowners insurance, renters insurance, auto insurance coverage, life insurance, boat insurance, RV insurance, small business insurance, and more. The company even offers pet insurance through a partnership with Trupanion.

State Farm also offers various financial products including home loans, checking and savings accounts, and personal loans . With these details in mind, it's easy to see how State Farm can be a better choice for customers who want to have all their insurance coverages with one company. However, prices for coverage from State Farm may not necessarily be as affordable as you'll find with Lemonade, so you'll still want to price shop policies and compare.
