20+ Amazing Travel Essentials for Women

I f you’re a woman who likes to be organized and put together when traveling, I got you. Here are my 2024 travel essentials for women.

20+ Travel Essentials for Women

Organizational travel essentials for women, packing cubes .

Packing cubes are an oldie but a goodie when it comes to travel essentials. Depending on the trip, I organize them in different ways. If I already have specific outfits in mind, I will put 2-3 days of outfits together in one cube, otherwise I’ll organize them by tops, bottoms, etc.

I got these affordable packing cubes from Amazon , but if you’re looking for something more luxe check out Beis, Monos, and Truffle.

Silicone Brush Holder

If you travel with multiple makeup brushes, you need this silicone brush holder . Keep your smaller brushes and other makeup bits together in this sleek, compact case.

It doesn’t fit larger face brushes too well, but it’s perfect for eye makeup brushes, liners and other things that are easily lost in your makeup bag,

Silicone Sponge Holder

A silicone sponge holder gives you somewhere to store your wet beauty blender and keep it from getting your makeup bag all dirty. Plus,  there’s small slits in it that give it air to breath, so it’s able to dry in between uses.

Cord and Cable Organizers

If you’re like me and travel with 101 electronics, a cord organizer is definitely a must-have. I have a larger one ( similar ) that I put all my cables and chargers in, and a smaller one for extra batteries for my cameras that fits in my purse. They come in all sorts of different sizes and configurations, so Amazon is sure to have one for you.

Clear Jewelry Organizer

I highly recommend this clear jewelry organizer . I’ve had other travel jewelry organizers and this one is my favorite. The clear pouches make it easy to see everything, and with the hanger you can keep it hanging within eyesight. I’m one of those people who if I don’t see it, I forget it, so this helps me remember to put on the jewelry I pack.

Sunglass Organizer

Make packing multiple sunglasses a breeze with a sunglasses organizer . It keeps your sunglasses safe and secure, and you won’t have to worry about them getting smashed or broken.

Clear Pouches

Some good clear pouches are definitely a travel essential every woman needs. They help keep all your different bits and bobs together so they’re easier to find and keep up with. Whether you use them for toiletries, accessories, or medicine, clear pouches are very useful.

Practical Travel Essentials for Women

Compression socks.

Another Amazon travel must-have are compression socks. If you’re taking a long-haul flight, they help stimulate your circulation which can help prevent blood clots. They come in a variety of styles, colors, and compression strengths. Comrad compression socks are my favorites because they come in a bunch of cute patterns.

Belt bag, fanny pack, whatever you want to call it, these bags are super convenient to have when traveling. Clip one around you to keep your wallet, phone, passport, and other small essentials all together.

Having access to these items without having to dig through a larger bag or take off your backpack is what makes them great. Plus, if you’re traveling with other people, you can leave your larger bags with them, and have everything you need across your chest or waist.

I love my Lululemon belt bag , but these are also cute: Option 1 | Option 2 | Option 3

Luggage Scale

If you’re typically an over packer, you need an electronic luggage scale . You just simply hook it around the handle of your suitcase and lift to get the weight. No more awkwardly unpacking your suitcase at the check in counter!

Compact Electric Toothbrush

Ever since starting to use an electric toothbrush, I never feel like I get the same kinda clean with a standard toothbrush. That being said, my Philips toothbrush isn’t the most travel friendly, so I got this travel electric toothbrush from Amazon . I like it, but it’s not the most convenient because you have to disassemble it to put it back in the case.

Instead, I recommend getting this PHILIPS One by Sonicare toothbrush , which I will be upgrading to soon myself.

Passport Holder

There are all kinds of passport holders. Some have space for your boarding pass and credit cards while others are simply a decorative cover. My friend gifted me this passport holder which has a spot for your covid vaccine card and a couple of cards.

Clear Luggage Covers

If you have lighter colored suitcases, luggage covers are a must to keep them from getting horribly dirty and scuffed. Just make sure to check the dimensions and which side the side luggage handle opening is. I use these covers for my Monos suitcases .

Carry-on Backpack

A good travel backpack can be used for a short, weekend trip or as a personal item when flying. This backpack from Amazon went viral awhile back, and boasts plenty of storage in a compact body. It also comes in a variety of cute colors.

Light up Travel Mirror

My friend Brooke laughs when I pull out my travel mirror , but it’s super useful when you have a room full of girls and limited mirrors and getting ready space. I’ve also used it to get ready on a train while traveling from Barcelona to Madrid.

Travel Door Lock

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group of gals, a travel door lock is one of the top travel essentials for women. Give yourself some peace of mind knowing that you’ve made your room or accommodation extra secure.

Touchland Hand Sanitizer

When I tell you the Touchland hand sanitizers are the best, they are the BEST. Whenever I pull one out people always ask me, “What is that?” They smell so good, and their slim profile and minimalistic design makes them pleasantly aesthetic.

If you have trouble sleeping with lights on, a good eye mask is definitely something you need to pack. Amazon has plenty of options like this silk eye mask or this eye mask that is great for those who have lash extensions or wear falsies.

Electronic Travel Essentials for Women

Bluetooth dongle.

If you use any kind of wireless headphones, this bluetooth dongle is a must when it comes to flying. Plug it into the jack for the inflight entertainment, and pair it with your headphones. No more sad airline headphones with poor audio quality.

Travel Adapter

If you’re traveling out of the country, you’re more than likely going to need a travel adapter . I like ones that have multiple ports like this one so I can charge all my different devices without needing a bunch of different converters.

3-in-1 Wireless Charger

Planes typically give you one usb port to charge your devices while traveling, which can be a pain when you have multiple items that need to be charged.

With this 3-in-1 wireless charger , you can charge your headphones, smart watch, and phone all together. It folds up nicely, into a compact, small square which makes it easy to toss in your carry on bag or backpack.

There’s nothing worse than your phone going dead in the middle of an outing; especially, while traveling. You use it to navigate, to take pictures and videos, request an Uber, etc. With a power bank you can ensure your phone stays ready to capture memories and more.

Travel Tripod with Bluetooth Remote

Whether you’re a solo traveler or want to be able to get some group pics without bothering others, this travel tripod from Amazon is the perfect travel accessory.

It easily fits in most backpacks and larger purses, and comes with a bluetooth remote so you don’t have to run back and forth while trying to get some pictures or videos.

Noise-canceling Headphones

Want to avoid having to listen to that baby in 24D screaming its head off? Or simply want to block out unnecessary noise? Get yourself a good pair of noise-canceling headphones.

I have the AirPods Pro which are pretty good at keeping out outside noise for earbuds. However, if you prefer an over-the-ear option check out the AirPod Maxs , Sony WH1000XM4 Wireless Headphones , or Bose QuietComfort Headphones .

Solo female travel: traveling alone in russia as a woman.

' src=

The following interview on solo female travel in Russia comes from Katie Aune.

Originally from Minnesota, I practiced law for six years before switching to a career in fundraising. I took a 13-month career break in 2011-12 to travel through all 15 countries of the former Soviet Union, a journey that included riding the length of the Trans-Siberian Railway , volunteering in Armenia , teaching English in Tajikistan, running a marathon in Estonia, camping in the desert in Turkmenistan and doing my best to speak Russian on a daily basis.

Since I returned to working full-time, I continue to travel as much as possible, usually to off the beaten path destinations like Mali, Burkina Faso, Bulgaria and Kosovo. Most recently, I relocated from Chicago to Washington, D.C. to start a new job in fundraising for the National Geographic Society.

Why did you decide to travel to Russia by yourself?

I majored in Russian & East European Studies in college and have pretty much been obsessed with Russian history since I was in high school. I always wanted to travel there, but felt like I needed to go for more than just 2 weeks that I could do as a vacation. So when I decided to take a year-long career break, Russia was central to my plans. I ended up spending 3 months there!

In Sergiev Posad, outside of Moscow

Did you have any trouble traveling solo there?

I didn’t. I had heard that I would need to be really careful in Moscow, looking out for pickpockets on the subway, etc. but I never had any issues. I am sure it helped that I blended in well while I was there – because I arrived as seasons were changing, I bought most of my outerwear in St Petersburg, as well as a new shoulder bag, so I looked like a local! I also speak some Russian so that helped too.

Did you ever feel unsafe?

Tell us about one of your favorite experiences from traveling solo in russia..

I took the Trans-Siberian Railway all the way across the country from Vladivostok to Moscow and I had some great experiences along the way. In one instance, I shared a train compartment with a Russian teacher who helped me practice my Russian, even helping to translate my horoscope for me! Another time, I shared a compartment with a man who was trying to learn English – he was so excited to practice with me and used my Russian-English dictionary to ask me questions.

With my homestay host daughter's English class outside of St Petersburg

Were there any special precautions you took to feel safer while traveling solo?

It wasn’t really on purpose to feel safe, but as I mentioned above, I think it helped that I was wearing the same clothing as the locals and didn’t stand out as a tourist. And of course speaking the language helps a lot . I also just used common sense, not wandering around by myself late at night and not drinking a lot – I always knew where I was and what I was doing.

Did you meet any other solo female travelers while you were there?

I can remember meeting one in St Petersburg. Otherwise, I met several couples, pairs of friends or solo males.

What luggage did you bring with you to Russia?

I carried an Eagle Creek backpack (I think 55L), a North Face daypack and a shoulder bag that I bought in St Petersburg after my original one broke. When traveling by train in Russia, backpacks are a lot more practical as you can easily fit them in luggage bins under the bunks – suitcases likely wouldn’t fit.

Hiking in Stolby Nature Reserve outside of Krasnoyarsk, Russia

Were there any items you were glad you brought with you or that you wished you had brought?

I was very glad to have my Russian phrasebook and an unlocked cell phone (to get a local SIM card ). Anything else I needed, I could find there.

What’s your number 1 tip for females traveling solo to Russia?

Learn to read the Cyrillic alphabet and learn at least a few basic phrases in Russian. It will make getting around so much easier and outside of Moscow and St Petersburg, there isn’t much English spoken, so knowing at least a little Russian will help a lot.

I run the show at Her Packing List and love packing ultralight. In fact, I once traveled for 3 entire weeks with just the contents of a well-packed 12L handbag . When I'm not obsessing over luggage weight, I'm planning adventures or just snuggling with my pet rabbit, Sherlock Bunz.

I lived in Moscow for about 6 months back in 2010 and would totally agree, I rode around the metro all the time and never had any issue with pickpockets, or any safety concerns.

Russia Packing List

Whether you're heading to Russia for vacation or business, there are a few absolute essentials that you can't forget to pack. Beyond the appropriate wardrobe, you should bring a power converter; your passport and visa; and much more. Make your list and plan ahead of time so you don't leave anything important behind.

You can't travel to Russia if you don't have a Russian visa. In order to get one, you should apply well in advance of your trip through an embassy. You will also need an invitation (issued by the hotel at which you plan to stay or through a travel agent), and you can use this invitation to apply for your visa. Double check that the visa is valid during the dates of your trip, and carry your visa with you wherever you go in Russia as sometimes police do random checks.

Bring some cash with you, as you will likely need it. Euros and USD can be exchanged almost anywhere in Russia. There will be ATMs in the airport (or wherever you are arriving), but it’s possible in Russia that they’ll be out of order—so don’t take that risk. It’s quite difficult to pay by credit card in Russia (and practically impossible to pay by debit card), so having cash is essential. Make sure the bills are in crisp, good condition, as it’s quite common in Russia for people (and even banks) to reject damaged bills.

If you’re traveling to Moscow or St. Petersburg and are planning on seeing the tourist attractions , make sure you have a good way of securing your money. Either wear a money belt or get a small bag that sits close to your body with a secure closure—and keep an eye on it!

If you are going to be staying with a host family, or interacting extensively with Russian people in general, it’s nice to bring some small souvenirs from your country (mugs, t-shirts, keychains, and so on). This is a small gesture that will be greatly appreciated.

Toilet Paper

Russian toilets are notoriously dirty and unkempt, and you will often not find toilet paper inside. Carry some with you (or a small pack of tissues) just in case. You may also want to pack a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer as well.

In general, it’s good to bring layers. A scarf will be particularly useful for covering your head if you’re a woman planning to visit religious monuments. This is usually not obligatory, but it is appreciated.

Russian weather is quite unpredictable, and even if you’re traveling at the height of summer, it would be wise to bring an umbrella. This is especially true in St. Petersburg or northern Russia , where it's more likely to rain.

When you're packing your toiletry bag, make sure to include prescription drugs and contact lens solution. Although you can buy most household items in pharmacies and shops in Russia, these particular things are surprisingly difficult to find.

Fancy Outfits

If you plan on going clubbing, you'll need to bring nice clothes. Many clubs, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg , have a strict dress code and will not let you in if you’re not up to their standards. So don’t show up wearing jeans and a T-shirt, which may be fine if you're  going to a casual, local bar  but not to an exclusive club.

Duffel Bags

Packing light is recommended no matter where you're traveling to. But in Russia, try to leave your oversized luggage and rolling suitcases at home. Instead, use a duffel bag that you can easily throw over your shoulder. Many Russian metro stations don’t have escalators but they do have huge staircases that must be climbed to get around the station, which is difficult to navigate with a bulky suitcase.

Riham

It's a safe city, i've been here for 2 years and more, nothing bad happened before, there will be sometimes drunk men who like to overtalk, but the most of them are respectful and will not touch you.

In general, Moscow is the safest city in Russia, but just like in any other city, the possibility of a stolen wallet during rush hour on the subway cannot be ruled out. There is also police inaction sometimes. I lived in Paris, there are areas where it is better not to go even during the daytime. in Moscow there are no such dangerous areas, but just like in any other place, there is always a chance of running into a bad person or get some bad experience

Is Moscow safe right now?

How to Pack for a Trip to Russia

What should i pack for russia.

  • Clothes for winter : Layers, thermal underwear, a long coat, hat, scarf and gloves, warm shoes and socks
  • Clothes for summer : Breathable clothing, lightweight jacket and jumper, sunglasses and sunhat
  • Clothes for going out : Nice shirt and smart trousers for men, smart trousers and top or dress for women
  • Personal items : Insect repellent and sun-cream, wet wipes and hand sanitiser, medications, extension cords, earplugs and an eye mask

One of the biggest questions before travelling anywhere, is what to pack. But for those going on a Russian tour, this can be simpler than expected because essentially, Russia only has two seasons, winter and summer. The leaves turn golden for a mere two or three weeks before the temperatures rapidly drop and winter begins, and spring is more of a melting period, with snow and ice seen even as late as May.

Read on to find out what to pack, and how to be comfortable and prepared in every situation.

What clothes to wear in Russia?

Clothes for winter.

How to pack for a trip to Russia - winter

Russia is spectacularly beautiful in the wintertime. A dusting of snow covers the palaces, churches and museums, and the icy forests truly look like something out of a fairy tale. But regardless of the magical atmosphere, the outside world is generally very cold. In the cities you will most likely be visiting, winter temperatures are in the range of -10 to -20 degrees Celsius, or 14 to -4 degrees Fahrenheit, but can be even lower.

Layers are vital. For maximum comfort (and safety), bring sweatshirts or hoodies, warm long trousers or extra thick tights, and thermal underwear. A long, warm coat is highly recommended. Not only will it keep you insulated from the cold, but if you slip on the ice it will cushion you and protect your clothes. And of course, it goes without saying that you must bring a hat, scarf and gloves. Ideally, very warm gloves, a fur or wool hat which covers your ears, and a scarf which can be wrapped around your face as well.

Even if the outside world is an icy -30, the inside of Russian buildings remain toasty and warm - heating is generated in a centralised location and switched on in September/October, providing automatic and constant heating for all the buildings in the locality and Russians like it very warm indoors. So, make sure to also bring indoor clothes and lighter layers - a suitcase full of only thick jumpers will do you no favours when you’re inside.

One of the most vital items on your list should be a warm pair of waterproof shoes, as Russia’s sidewalks and streets transform into a quagmire of slush and snow during winter. Shoes should have grippy treads as ice is often more problematic than snow, and the pavement can turn into an uneven mountain of black ice. Make sure to bring warm socks, preferably those sold in hiking/outdoor shops.

For those travelling to Siberia , the weather will be significantly colder, so pack accordingly. If you plan on doing activities such as skiing or snowboarding then bring waterproof trousers, and sunglasses are a good idea if you will spend a lot of time outside in the snow.

Clothes for summer

How to pack for a trip to Russia - Summer

Despite its reputation, Russia isn’t always covered in snow. Summer is the perfect time to explore the country. Take a stroll any time of day or night, appreciate the White Nights in northern Russia, or go on a camping trip. Temperatures are generally in the range of 20 - 30 degrees Celsius, or 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Air conditioning is not a common sight in Russia, and Russian people have an innate fear of drafts so even on public transport in the middle of summer, windows are often kept shut. Lightweight and breathable clothing is your best bet, and a sunhat and sunglasses are essential items.

The weather can still be unpredictable, so bring a lightweight jacket and jumper for cooler evenings, and an umbrella too, especially if you’re visiting St. Petersburg . Russians dress modestly so you may feel uncomfortable in anything very short or low cut. To be respectful when visiting Russia’s churches, bring a scarf to cover your head and shoulders and a bottom layer of modest length.

Clothes for going out

How to pack for a trip to Russia - going out

There is a famous saying that ‘good clothes open all doors’ - and it’s safe to say that Russians dress impeccably when going to the theatre, a nice restaurant, or a nightclub. You do not have to bring a tuxedo or an evening gown, as low-key elegance is better than extravagance. For men, a nice shirt, smart trousers and shoes won’t go amiss. And for women, smart trousers and top or an elegant dress, and heels or nice boots. In winter, it is perfectly normal to change shoes at the theatre cloakroom if you don’t want to risk your high heels on the ice. Upmarket Russian nightclubs often have strict ‘face control’ who turn away those who they consider to be badly dressed, so bring a stylish outfit.

TRAVELERS ASK: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

It’s perfectly acceptable to wear jeans in Russia. Denim is enormously popular among Russians and you will be allowed into museums, churches and restaurants wearing jeans. However, Russians love to dress up, so wear smarter clothes for upmarket restaurants, nightclubs or the theatre. Jeans alone are insufficient for the Russian winter, so pack thermal underwear or tights accordingly.

Personal items and toiletries

How to pack for a trip to Russia - personal items

You should bring insect repellent if visiting during summer, especially when travelling to Siberia - mosquitoes and horseflies have a voracious appetite. And don’t forget your sun cream!

Bring tissues, wet wipes and hand sanitiser. Public toilets are not very hygienic anywhere in Russia.

Russia has plenty of toiletry and cosmetic shops, so you won’t be in trouble if you forget your favourite shampoo or makeup. But make sure to bring any medication that you may need, as you may not be able to get it when you’re in Russia. Also, it’s a good idea to double check that your medication is legal in Russia - see Russian Customs Rules .

Bring a few different bags. A travel belt is the best way to safely carry your money and passports, and a small handbag or daysack will allow you to comfortably explore any Russian town or city. Russia uses two pin plug sockets (same as Europe) so remember your travel adaptors. One of the best tips for travelling abroad is to bring an extension cord from your home country with an adapter. Learn more about voltage in Russia .

For travelling on the Trans-Siberian Express or other long distance trains, a good quality portable charger will prove a lifesaver. Bring sleeping clothes which you would feel comfortable wearing while in a public space, slippers or sandals, and earplugs and an eye mask.

And lastly, don’t forget to pack your favourite book by one of Russia’s great writers. There is absolutely no better place to enjoy Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Bulgakov than when you’re in Russia - immersed in their culture and history!

Energy shutdowns hit Ukraine after Russian attacks target infrastructure

Ukraine imposed emergency power shutdowns in most of the country Sunday, a day after Russia unleashed large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure and claimed it made gains in the eastern Donetsk province.

The shutdowns were in place in all but three regions of Ukraine following Saturday’s drone and missile attack on energy targets that injured at least 19 people.

Ukraine’s state-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo said the shutdowns affected industrial and household consumers.

Sustained Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in recent weeks have forced the government to institute nationwide rolling blackouts. Without adequate air defenses to counter assaults and allow for repairs, though, the shortages could still worsen as need spikes in late summer and the bitter-cold winter.

Could Ukraine lose the war? Once nearly taboo, the question hovers in Kyiv, but Ukrainians believe they must fight for their lives against Putin’s troops.

April 17, 2024

Among the most significant recent strikes were an April barrage that damaged Kyiv’s largest thermal power plant and a massive attack May 8 that targeted power generation and transmission facilities in several regions.

Following Saturday’s barrage, Ukraine’s air force said Sunday that air defenses had shot down all 25 drones launched overnight.

Russia claimed Sunday that it had taken control of the village of Umanske in the partially Russian-occupied Donetsk region.

Russia’s coordinated new offensive has centered on Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, but seems to include testing Ukrainian defenses in Donetsk farther south, while also launching incursions in the northern Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

In Russia, six people were injured in shelling in the city of Shebekino in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said Sunday. He also said that a local official, the deputy head of the Korochansky district, had been killed by “detonation of ammunition.” He gave no details.

In the neighboring Kursk region, three people were injured Sunday when an explosive device was dropped from a drone, according to acting regional head Alexey Smirnov.

Speaking at Asia’s premier security conference in Singapore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused China on Sunday of helping Russia to disrupt an upcoming Swiss-organized peace conference on the war in Ukraine.

Also on Sunday, White House national security communications advisor John F. Kirby confirmed President Biden agreed to allowing Ukraine to use some U.S.-provided weapons to strike inside Russia to relieve “incredible downward pressure” that Russia has put on Kharkiv.

Russia hits Ukraine’s power grid with ‘massive’ attack

Ukraine’s president says Russia launched a massive nighttime attack on energy facilities in Ukraine, targeting seven regions with missiles and drones.

May 8, 2024

Earlier this week, four U.S. officials, who requested anonymity, said Biden had given Ukraine the go-ahead to use American weaponry to strike inside Russia for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv.

Ukraine asked for permission to use the U.S.-provided weapons to strike against “imminent threats just across the border,” Kirby said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.”

“We’re talking about military emplacements, gun positions, that kind of thing. Logistics staging bases that the Russians were using to create some sort of buffer zone so that they could continue to pound Kharkiv.” Kirby said the permission is “limited to the Kharkiv region and it is limited with respect to the kinds of targets they can hit, and how far back they can go.”
