If You’re Near Northeastern Spain, Don’t Miss Priorat

I enjoyed Priorat because of its seclusion. While I may be using the word secluded, it’s a wine region that’s actually incredibly easy to access. However, once you’re there, you feel (and you are), in a foreign land filled with small picturesque villages beset beneath a beautiful mountainous landscape.

A Practical Priorat Wine Region Itinerary | Things to Do and See in Priorat, Spain | Winetraveler.com

Priorat is a DOQ, which is short for a rare style of wine region known to produce wines of unmatched quality. When you envision Priorat on a map, think of it as a donut hole . The entire Priorat region is surrounded by another wine region called DO Montsant (see map above, courtesy Paisatges del Vi ). In Catalan, DOQ stands for Denominació d’Origen Qualificada (Qualified/Controlled Appellation of Origin), whereas DO is a different classification of wine region. You can learn more about the difference between Spanish wine regions and their classifications here.

How To Get to Priorat from Barcelona

Arguably the easiest and cheapest way to get to Priorat is to take a relatively short (under 2 hour) train ride from Barcelona. Many wine enthusiasts, climbers, and hikers alike make this an easy day trip. You can browse current flight deals into Barcelona with Kayak. Search for the best rates on upscale hotels in Barcelona here .

I usually hop on the train at Estació de Sants (Barcelona-Sants) train station. Tickets are around 12 euros, which you can purchase via any of the orange automated ticketing machines at the station. Your final destination will be the MARÇÀ-FALSET station, and usually, the platform is either 9 or 10 at Barcelona-Sants (make sure you’re not hopping on a local train bound for the airport)! You can view/search current train schedules and fares here.

Alternatively, you can take one of the most highly-rated day tours, operated by Spanish Trails from Barcelona to Priorat . This guided experience comes complete with a 3-course lunch at Clos Figueres, 3 wine tasting sessions around Morera de Montsant, Gratallops and Porrera, and much more. This is a better option if you prefer to avoid the logistics of navigating yourself.

If you’d prefer to stay in Priorat, we list several of our favorite vineyard resorts in this article . Our favorite lodging at the moment is Trossos del Priorat . This upscale property provides an ideal location for not only staying amongst the vines, but it also works as a great base to explore nearby wineries. Perfect for couples, families, and solo travelers.

What To Do in Priorat Spain

So now that you made it into Priorat, where to begin? You could honestly just spend the day driving through Priorat and Montsant admiring the scenery, but let’s make things a bit more interesting and include some ancient monastery visits, wine tours, and jaw-dropping scenic hikes.

First Stop: Visit the Escaladei Monastery

Escaledie Monastery | Priorat, Spain | Winetraveler.com

Priorat is steeped in history. The region has been influenced by several ancient religions and cultures for thousands of years. The Escaladie (Catalan Pronunciation) Monastery makes for an ideal first stop because not only will it get you in the adventurous mood and pique your curiosity, but it’s also tucked beneath the hills of Montsant, on the outskirts of Priorat.

The monastery was originally founded by French Carthusian monks around 1285, not far from the Catalonian village of La Morera de Montsant. The monastery was built in one of the most beautiful locations in the region. It’s said that a shepherd had a dream about angels coming down from heaven at the location, on a ladder placed atop a pine tree.

The monastery is no longer in operation (it was a functional monastery until 1835), but the ruins and history of the area are well preserved. Remember that the Christian religion has been widely responsible for the spread of vine-growing across the globe, which was also true here in Priorat, with the Carthusians’ arrival in the Middle Age.

Innovative farming techniques that are still used today were perfected here. Ancient vintners planted their crops on the steep slopes of the surrounding area, which forces the vines to work for their nutriment. This practice is still widely utilized around both Montsant and Priorat today, and is one of the major reasons why wines produced here are so good.

The Carthusian Monastery of Santa Maria d’Escaladei ruins are currently open to visitors. Guided tours and self-exploration of the area are both options. Self-guided tours cost as little as 3.50 euros, while guided tours start at 6.50. The monastery opens at 10:00 am and may be open as late as 7:30 pm depending on the time of year. Winter months close earlier (around 3:30).

Second Stop: The Plateau Village of Siurana

Priorat Spain Day Trip Itinerary - Wine Tasting in Priorat and Visiting Siurana | Winetraveler.com

My favorite scenic destination in Priorat is undoubtedly the ancient village of Siurana . This dreamlike mountaintop village was constructed in such a way as to be an unconquerable fortress that oversaw the surrounding Catalonian area. It was originally erected by the Moors, but after a lengthy reconquest by the Christians in the area around 1153AD, it fell. For centuries, Siurana was protected by natural defenses. It was the last Moorish stronghold to fall to the Christians in Catalonia. The legend goes that Abdelazia, the ancient Moorish queen of Siurana, rode with her horse off of the summit of Siurana, rather than be captured by the Christian invaders. It’s also said that her horse left an imprint of his horseshoe on the summit rock before the two leaped to their death.

The rest is history, but we highly recommend you make the hike up to Siurana to enjoy the quaint feel of the surrounding area. The entire village sits beside cobblestone roads and ancient architectural structures. Below the summit, you can find a beautiful flowing reservoir. Swimming and kayaking are both options any day-tripper can explore.

Siurana is also touted as one of Spain’s best climbing and hiking destinations if you’re looking to enjoy an active day.  You can also check out these guided tours of Siurana . Following your visit, we recommend you taste some wine :).

Winetraveler Tip: Enjoy hiking and wine? Consider booking a tour near Siurana with our friends, El Brogit ! Once you’ve scheduled your experience, be sure to ask them about customization options.

Third Stop: Taste the Wine of Priorat!

Last but not least, and certainly my favorite thing to do in Priorat, is wine tasting!  This largely undiscovered yet beautiful and flavor-prone wine region is well worth exploring — and there’s no better vintner to start with than Celler Devinssi .

This past May, I had the opportunity to explore Priorat in detail with Jordi Ustrell of Celler Devinssi.  Jordi holds a Ph.D. in Tourism Management and is a certified wine tour guide.  He’s also a great friend.

Celler Devinssi is currently crafting beautiful white and red wines intimately tied to the terroir of Priorat.

“We invade minimally the environment, so we let the vineyard just grow in its natural environment, alongside with weeds, flowers, oaks, wild roses, nut and olive trees… There’s fauna galore around: wild boars, rabbits, foxes, eagles, butterflies, bees… We also mostly use local varieties: garnatxa (Grenache) and samsó (Carignan). We also try to highlight the fruitiness and minerality in the wine, with some good acidity, the latter being vital for wines coming from such a hot region, where grapes are prone to excessive ripening and high sugar content (i.e. wines may be around 15% of alcohol),” says Jordi.

If you have the opportunity to visit Priorat, I highly suggest letting Jordi craft a custom, intimate, and private wine tour/tasting for you and yours.  Experiences may include, but are not limited to, intense feelings of natural euphoria, wine tasting atop the summit of Siurana, and gastronomic exposure at some very picturesque and quaint Priorat villages.  He’ll also be able to take you to other areas in and around Priorat, including the stops we mention throughout this itinerary.

Fourth Stop: Tarragona

Most notable for its Roman history, Tarragona provides a feel unlike any other near Priorat. From ancient Roman Gladiatorial amphitheaters to picturesque Mediterranean beaches, Tarragona is something special. Step back in time.

RELATED: Why You Should Visit Tarragona: Spain’s Ancient Port on the Mediterranean

Given that you’ll likely only be visiting the Priorat region for a day or two, we’ve narrowed down our favorite things to do in Tarragona below. You can also take your pick from any of these incredible Tarragona tours . Including a visit to the city’s famous squares, a visit to the ancient Roman Gladiator Ring / Amphitheater, and a walk along Tarragona’s beaches. Tarragona is also intimately connected with the surrounding landscape and villages through a series of “green” style paths. These public paths have been in use for centuries, and are still used today to promote alternate routes of transportation throughout the region by leaving a smaller carbon footprint.

Things To Do in Tarragona

Hiking in Tarragona near Priorat

Wander the paths of Tarragona

What’s nice about wandering Tarragona’s ancient dirt pathways is that you can use multitudes of alternative transportation. Walk them, speed hike them, or traverse the trails via mountain bike.  You can even go horseback riding. There are over 75 kilometers of paths to explore.

What sets these ancient pathways apart from others in Spain is that they are still the same routes used for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years.  French soldiers used these routes to ‘route’ the remaining Moorish strongholds in the Priorat area. Some were used as simple paths merchants would use to bring their goods to local markets.

As you walk them and traverse old quarries and ancient ruins, try to imagine yourself in another age. Some of the more chilling uses of these ancient pathways had to do with ice being taken from the nearby Prades Mountains. It was then used to make old-style brandy drinks to lower the fevers of the sick (tip of the hat to Tarragona Turisme for the knowledge). The paths of Tarragona will give you goosebumps.

Eat in Tarragona

While Tarragona may be most well known for its Roman roots, there’s a food culture here that is certainly worth exploring and savoring.

There’s a particular maritime area called Serrallo , which is loaded with seafood restaurants and to this day is still largely unexplored by international visitors. This port area is characterized by its narrow streets and somewhat simplistic style of maritime architecture. This truly is an authentic fishing village. Both visitors and international tourists can expect to have an authentic, Catalonian seafood experience. According to some of the locals in the area, a favorite restaurant is ‘ A Bordo .’

A Bordo is quaint, with just enough capacity for 30 people. Upon entering, foodies can expect a maritime style of decor that helps warm the senses for a great seafood-based meal. Don’t be shy and dive into their anchovy croquettes and fresh mussels with a side of crisp local white wine.

Stop by the Ancient Roman Amphitheater

Ancient Roman Gladiator Stadium in Tarragona

Like many of the gladiator rings designed during and before the 2nd century, this ancient piece of architectural magic overlooks the Balearic / Mediterranean Sea. What makes this particular gladiator ring so special is that the entire structure, including the seating was carved out of the bedrock that covered the coastal area. It was able to hold a maximum of 14,000 people. The site is steeped in history and was used for gladiatorial duels, as well as fights between wild animals. It was also the location where Bishop Fructuoso and and his clerics were burned alive in 259 AD.

Visit the Beaches of Tarragona

Costa Daurada Beaches in Catalonia

Last but not least, how about a visit to a series of beaches that are somewhat unrecognized when compared to the nearby city life of Barcelona and Sitges. There are a large number of beaches, both large and small, as well as numerous picturesque small coves along the 15-kilometer coastline. Not to mention, the water itself is for the most part crystal clear and shimmers in the sun.

Not unlike the summer months along many of the coasts in the United States, the “Costa Daurada” (Gold Coast) beaches or Tarragona are ideal to visit between June and September.

This article is great and has me excited to visit this region. One question, you say it is easy and cheap to take a train from Barcelona to Priorat, but what do you recommend for transportation for getting around in the priorat region?

Hi Brittany,

Happy to hear you found the article so helpful! Priorat is a very special place and I have no doubt you’ll have an amazing time. Regarding the train, it’s definitely an affordable option. When we visited Priorat, we had a pre-scheduled wine tour setup with someone who was able to drive us around the region and picked us up from the train station. Depending on your travel dates, we may be able to check into this for you. If you’re planning on spending more than one day in Priorat, you might consider renting a car in Barcelona and making the drive up. Public transportation in the area is relatively limited.

Cheers, Greig

That’s great. We will be in Barcelona from sept 28-3, then again october 6-8 (we are spending a few days in between in valencia). If you have any recommended tour guides for the area in priorat, that would be wonderful!

This article is great and has me very excited to visit the region. One question: you said it is easy to get to priorat by train from Barcelona, but what do you recommend for transportation once in the Priorat region? Will I need a car or are there drivers for hire?

Could you give me advice as to how to get around in the Priorat region? We will be travelling with the train from Barcelona but not sure how to get around once we are there.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

6 Great Priorat Wineries to Visit (+Where to Stay and Eat)

The Priorat Wine Region in the province of Tarragona, in the southwest of Catalonia , is one where you’ll find luscious, deep red wines that will blow your mind. Even though this area has been making wine for thousands of years, it wasn’t until much more recently that the true value of it was discovered.

Oftentimes, you’ll visit a wine region that has just what you expected to find, but rarely do you visit a wine region and find yourself surprised at the quality that you find. That’s exactly what the Priorat wineries will do to you. Trust me.

Priorat Vineyards

Taking a trip to visit Priorat wineries isn’t as straightforward as other Spain wine regions , like Rioja can be. You need to make appointments, and often pay in advance, and you should definitely be ready for the windy, twisty-turvy roads you’ll be driving on in the mountain range.

But what you’ll find there is something exceptional and definitely palate pleasing. The wines are expensive but they are worth it.

Introduction to Priorat Wine Region

In case you don’t know very much about the Priorat Wine Region already, here’s your crash course. Priorat is a  Denominació d’Origen Qualificada (DOQ)  for Catalan wines. The primary type of wine made there is full-bodied, powerful red wines.

However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that Priorat started to be taken seriously. It was then, even, that they started bottling their wines and selling them at the premium they do today. Before that, they were mostly producing high-volume table wine at a low price.

However, the first recorded evidence of grape growing and wine production there dates back to the 12th century, when the Carthusian monks founded their monastery in 1194 and introduced the art of wine making in the area.

The high altitude vineyards have a unique combination of black slate and quartz soil that forms the foundation of the terroir for these wines.

6 Wineries to Visit in Priorat

1. trossos del priorat.

Trossos del Priorat

Trossos del Priorat  is located in Gratallops is surrounded by its own vineyards. Being that it’s so close to the town and has an amazing vantage point for the region, Trossos is also a great place to stay while visiting the area. It’s a modern comfortable 3-star with 7 rooms, all with a balcony and amazing view. They also have a 4-star sister hotel with 26 rooms and a lovely restaurant, Terra Dominicata .

As for the winery, it began in 2003 when Enrique Vives and Juli Mestre bought the first vineyards. It remains a family operation, and you can visit for a tasting at Trossos or at Terra Dominicata.

Trossos del Priorat

They make really nice handcrafted wines from all organic vineyards. There are a few white wines, like Abracadabra, made with Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, and a few reds, like Le Petit de la Casa, made with Garnacha Negra, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

If you stay at the hotel, you will have the opportunity to try the wines in an honor-system bar, which is a convenient way to try the wines even you can’t book a tour/tasting.

Visits: You can make a booking for a tour and wine tasting on their website. It’s an hour and 30 minutes and you’ll get to taste a number of their wines.

2. Cellers de Scala Dei

Scala Dei Winery

The wineries in Priorat all have fascinating stories, but Scala Dei is one of the best. We were given one of the best wine tours we’ve ever had at Scala Dei, where they clearly really care about conveying the history and significance of this winery to wine making in the area.

The first wines were made here in 1263 by the Carthusian monks, who were run off in 1835. Soon after, 5 local families bought the monastary and the land and formed a union. That was the beginning of what has become modern wine making in Priorat. Today, you will find gorgeous wines made mostly with Grenache grapes on vineyards that are planted at high altitude and with plenty of character.

Scala Dei wines

Visits: Tasting only 3 wines: €20. Visit and tasting of 4 wines: 10:30 am tasting in English or 16:00 in “various languages” (Catalan and Spanish also available); €20 Book on the website

Scala Dei Monastery

Scala Dei Monastery

If you have time to take a break from wine tasting, you should visit the the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei, which is just a few minutes’ drive from the winery. It was founded in 1194. The families that bought Scala Dei gave the property to Generalitat de Catalunya for its preservation. You can visit the sight and go on a self-guided tour.

3. Devinssi

Devinssi Vineyards

Devinssi is a small operation in the center of Gratallops. Being a smaller operation, they can offer a different type of experience. They have some really old vineyards up on the mountain behind the town and they’ll take you up there for a look around. You won’t believe the view from up there! It’s incredible.

There are a number of different experiences you can book with Devinssi. It can be specialized to what you’re looking for. You can also book a sunset tour, which is what we did to get that amazing view in the photo above, or a morning 10am tour. They also have a popular PICA-PICA tasting, which includes a vineyard and winery tour, tasting, and local products pairing.

Visits: See options on the website ; book via Whatsapp +34608783094; Cost varies from 15€ – 100€

Perinet winery

Located in Poboleda, Perinet is a large winery with a lot of space for expansion. They focus on boutique wines, from the local varietals they have planted, like Carignan and Grenache, as well as international varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot.

Perinet estate vineyards are located in three distinct micro-climates which gives ultimate flexibility to the winemaking team to blend and formulate the perfect wines. The three are called Mas Vell, Mas del Xes, and Pendents.

A visit to Perinet includes a walk through some of the vineyards, so you can see the modern and old style of planting, the unique terraced vineyards, and the vast wine making facility and cellars.

Visit: They have a classic tour that takes 1.5 hours and costs 20€ for a visit, tour, and tasting of 3 wines. Book on their website

5. Mas Doix

Mas Doix wine

Now located in this stunning location on top of the hillside with the Montsant Mountains in the background near the town of Poboleda, Cellar Mas Doix is a premier winery with amazing views and really great wines.

When you visit the winery , you’ll be able to walk among the vines, see the cellar and wine production area, as well as taste the wines. They use organic viticulture with biodynamic practices to make wines that are fresh and elegant, with subtle minerality and made in limited production.

Visits: They have the option to taste 3, 5, or 7 of their wines. Believe me, you’re going to want to try them all. Book on their website ; prices range from €26 – €80

6. Celler Clos Figueras

cellar clos figueres

Cellar Clos Figueras is both a cellar and a restaurant. I can very much recommend going there for a tour and tasting, followed by lunch. We had a lovely tour, given by a guide who was very knowledgeable and passionate about the wine making at Clos Figueras, as well as the story of Priorat and it’s history.

We has some of our favorite wines of our trip to Priorat here, especially paired with the fantastic food in their restaurant. Font de la Figueras and Clos Figueras are both stunning wines.

Clos Figueras has 18 hectares of vineyards planted in the llicorella soil that makes Priorat so unique, just to the north of Gratallops, where the cellar and restaurant is located. The property was purchased in 1997 by Charlotte and Christopher Cannan, after the owner of Clos Mogador estate convinced him it was a good purchase. I’m sure if he wasn’t initially convinced, the exceptional rating the wine received from Robert Parker would have done it.

Visit: A tour and tasting of 5 wines takes 1 hour and costs €21. But why not stay for lunch where the tour is combined with a 4-course meal and wine pairings for €42. It’s very much worth it! Book by emailing: [email protected].

Where to Eat in Priorat

We were lucky to have reservations at three very good restaurants in Priorat. There are many great places to eat beyond these, but do check the schedules in advance because we found that many of them are only open for lunch everyday, with dinner only on Friday and Saturdays.

Restaurant Brots

Restaurant Brots

A little hidden gem for sure, located in Poboleda and run by innovative chef Pieter Truyts, Restaurant Brots is exactly the right place for a wine lunch while you’re out visiting the wineries. Our first introduction was the video that plays on the website. You must watch it. It’s clear that you’re going to have an experience at this restaurant. There were two set menus to choose from on the day we visiting and we loved everything we tasted.

Clos Figueras

clos figueras restaurant

Mentioned above, Close Figueras is a winery and a restaurant. They have a really great spacious patio, outdoor seating, and restaurant. If you go here for lunch, you can do a winery tour and then have the tasting paired with your 4-course lunch menu. It’s a really great value and the food was so good. We left there very happy.

Alma Mater restaurant

A great place for dinner in the area is Alma Mater, located in the Terra Dominicata hotel. It’s an adult only hotel and has a really nice vibe in the restaurant with some really tasty dishes to choose from and a very good wine menu. We paired our dinner with some of the favorite wines we had tried during the day at the wineries.

Where to Stay in Priorat

The two great choices we recommend are Trossos del Priorat and its sister hotel, Terra Dominicata. There are other hotels in the area, but we weren’t able to stay at them, so can’t give a recommendation.

Trossos del Priorat

Trossos is a great location about halfway between all the wineries you’re likely to visit. It’s very easy to get in and out of the hotel to get on the road each day. They offer a very nice cooked breakfast and a loyalty bar where you can try their wines after hours, in the kitchen where you can cook your own meals.

This is a 3-star with small rooms and not a lot of services. It’s meant to be a sort of hands-off kind of place with no fuss. We found the rooms very comfortable and great value, though the walls are fairly thin. There is no restaurant on the premises, but you can cook for yourself, and there is a breakfast service.

Terra Dominicata

You’ll have to drive further into the mountains to reach this hotel, but it’s a full-service 5-star adult only hotel that might be more your style if you’re looking for something a little more upscale. It’s a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property. The ground are enormous and very lovely, and the restaurant is a great benefit after a long day of wine tasting.

Our artisan winery is located in the old quarter of Gratallops. Here, we’ll talk you through the process of making handcraft wines. The winery has a tasting room, where we offer wine tastings for groups, wine-and-food pairings and other creative activities related to wine and wine tours. Visita a la vinya Rocapoll amb El Brogit Guiatges

To enrich your wine tourism experience in Priorat, Celler Devinssi offers trips to our vineyards in Gratallops, which enjoy some breathtaking views that overlook the village, the mountain of la Serra de Montsant, the Hermitage, and the south-west of the Priorat region. Here indeed, carrying a camera and taking pictures is a must-do. The vineyard scenery is lovely all year round: in the winter, when the schist stone glitters while fresh green grass is sprouting; in the spring, when grapevines release their first shoots; in the summer, when grapes work hard to achieve shape, ripen and get harvested; or in the autumn, when vineyard foliage morphs into reddish and yellowish shades…

Taylor Swift sings 'The Alchemy' as Travis Kelce attends Eras Tour in Paris

wine tourism priorat

PARIS — Taylor Swift sang "The Alchemy" as part of her acoustic set of surprise songs during Sunday's Eras Tour show with boyfriend Travis Kelce in attendance. Several football metaphors in the song have led fans to believe Swift wrote it about the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

"Can you believe this is the 87th show?" Swift asked during her acoustic set in La Défense Arena. Kelce wears No. 87. She then played a mashup on guitar of "The Alchemy" from her new album "The Tortured Poets Department" with "Treacherous" from "Red."

Kelce stood in his box as Swift glanced up at him and the crowd looked back and forth between the two.

"This happens once every few lifetimes," Swift sang. "These chemicals hit me like white wine.”

The crowd roared.

Kelce joined 40,000-plus fans for the fourth and final night of Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour in Paris. He watched from a box seat alongside actor Bradley Cooper, super model Gigi Hadid and rock star Lenny Kravitz.

The concert marks the fifth time Kelce has appeared at the tour since the couple went public last year. His first stop was Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by Sydney, Australia, and two nights in Singapore . Swift has changed the “Karma” lyrics to "guy on the Chiefs" every time Kelce has cheered her on from the sidelines.

Kelce hadn’t seen the new set list live since Swift switched up the eras and added her 11th era, “ The Tortured Poets Department .” The singer-songwriter said she’s been working on the changes for 8-9 months (since last fall).

Hadid has famously been a member of Swift's squad for years now and has been dating Cooper for several months.

Other celebrities spotted in the crowd included Grey's Anatomy actor Jessica Capshaw and singer Christina Milian.

Her next stop is Stockholm, Sweden, as she continues the European leg of the tour.
