Jeff Wayne and The War of The Worlds team are thrilled to unveil the grand return of our iconic arena production! Brace yourselves as our 35-foot Fighting Machine with its flame-firing Heat Ray conquers stages across the UK and Ireland in March and April 2025.
Our first two cast members have been announced! For the first time in Martian history, a real-life couple will be performing as the married couple: Max George as Parson Nathaniel and Maisie Smith as Beth , his wife. Jeff said: “Being a couple in real life will add to their on-stage charisma and chemistry. Maisie has such a melodic but powerful voice, which compliments Max’s dramatic and soulful vocals wonderfully."

Jeff Wayne announces follow up to War of the Worlds Immersive Experience
The new production will move to a bigger location in London.
Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds – The Immersive Experience has announced plans to move to a bigger venue in London next year, with an all-new production.
As the current incarnation continues at London’s former Metal Exchange on Leadenhall Street, creator Jeff Wayne confirmed the new version will feature familiar characters in a series of new scenarios, culminating in a “breathtaking balloon journey to Mars”.
The current experience has grossed more than £8million to date and will remain at its existing location until December 2023 as work continues on the new production.
Wayne commented: “When we first opened our immersive experience, it was only booked for a three-month run, yet great reviews, multiple awards, word-of-mouth attendances by existing and new fans have been so taken by it, here we are over four years later, and still going strong.
“We’re most excited to collaborate with the hottest specialist companies, immersive producers and venue owners, to continue to stun our audiences.”
Today’s announcement coincides with the 45th anniversary of the album Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds , adapted from the sci-fi novel by H. G. Wells.

The Wanted’s Max George and ex-Eastender’s Maisie Smith, met and fell in love on the 2020 series of Strictly Come Dancing, now they’ll be playing the married couple Parson Nathaniel & wife Beth, in the iconic Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds ‘The Spirit of Man’ arena tour in 2025.
The announcement unleashes a series of ‘firsts’, as we hear Maisie sing for the first time, Max act for the first time – as well as this being a monumental first for The War of The Worlds, as Jeff Wayne casts a real-life couple into this marriage of Nathaniel and Beth. The role of Nathaniel has previously been played by Jason Donovan and Blue’s Duncan James, whilst Steps’ Claire Richards and singer Kerry Ellis have filled the past roles of Beth in early Jeff Wayne live productions of TWOTW.
“The moment I met Max & Maisie I knew they were the perfect fit for the role of Nathaniel and Beth,” says Jeff Wayne. “Maisie has such a melodic but powerful voice, which compliments Max’s dramatic vocals wonderfully. Plus, being a couple in real life will add to their on-stage charisma and chemistry, and I’m delighted they’ve joined the 2025 The Spirit of Man Tour as husband and wife.”
“I am thrilled to announce my involvement in the iconic show that is Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds. This is a particularly special role for me because I grew up listening to the soundtrack on my dad's vinyl. My family are HUGE fans of the show so telling them I was going to be playing Beth was a very memorable moment,” Maisie Smith.
“I'm absolutely buzzing to be a part of Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds. It’s a show I’ve always been a fan of and was introduced to the music when I was five. My mum absolutely loves it. Playing the part of Parson Nathaniel is gonna be really special. I’ve got big shoes to fill with the likes of Phil Lynott and Jason Donovan playing the roles in the past, but I’m looking forward to making this role my own,” says Max George.

Originally commissioned by New Diorama Theatre.
Co-produced by Brighton Festival and HOME Manchester.
Supported by China Plate, Corn Exchange Newbury, The New Wolsey Theatre and Redbridge Drama Centre.
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS is a new play, devised by the company and written with Isley Lynn. Dealing with the creation, allure and implications of ‘fake news’ and moving between the worlds of Orson Welles’ infamous 1938 radio broadcast and that of contemporary podcasters, it contains an award-nominated sonic landscape from Benjamin Grant (recent work with Complicite, The National Theatre, The Wardrobe Ensemble and, currently, Schaubuhne Theater, Berlin).
The production opened in London, selling out a five-week run in London and a four-week run in Edinburgh. It is touring at the midscale in the UK and internationally in 2021-22.
“No-one would have believed in the early years of the twentieth century that this world was being watched...”
But we did believe.
We believed that Martians landed in New Jersey. We believed a water tower was an alien war machine. We believed a man walked on the moon. We believe everything the internet tells us and now the end of the world is being broadcast live...
There is nothing more alluring than a good story. When Orson Welles adapted The War of the Worlds, he wanted to create a thrilling radio drama that would ‘feel’ real. In fact, it felt so real that it caused hysteria amongst a public just getting used to the outside world invading their living rooms via the radio. Fast forward to 2016, and the internet has replaced the radio as the medium through which we make sense of the world. We remain just as susceptible …
Inspired by H.G. Wells’ sci-fi novel and Orson Welles’ classic radio play, this legendary science fiction thriller is playfully reimagined for our era of Fake News and ‘alternative facts’.
Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
Created by Rhum + Clay and written with Isley Lynn
